What are actually your thoughts on DuckTales 2017 reboot?

It took me a long time to answer because I had to think about it for a while.

I think DT17 is a fine kids show, but it lacks a lot of maturity depth in its themes ans story in addition to missing the point of nearly every character it adapts.

To me, show's problems begin with the main cast. In the comics you had pretty much only 3 main characters: Donald Scrooge and HDL (which in the comics are considered one character). This makes sense for the comics, it makes the cast simple, recognizable and fleshed out while giving time to side characters. Now, DT17 decided to split the triplets to make the cast wider for the TV setting, but while they did that they also added a lot of other characters, and this quickly got out of hand.

DT17 has 8 main characters: Scrooge, Donald, Huey, Dewey, Louie, Webby, Mrs. Beackly and Luanchpad. And 9 after Della comes back. This doesn't allow all the main cast to shine like Donald who was extremely neglected.

The worst part about this cast change is that they changed the focus from Scrooge and Donald. And no matter how much they try these kids aren't nearly as interesting as Donald and Scrooge in the comics. Due to this change stories deal with kids' conflicts like sleepovers or the Funzo's episodes. Makes the show feel a lot more childish.

I find stories about Scrooge going to find treasure simply to get richer or Donald trying and failing at his new job(s) much more compelling than what DT17 has to offer.

Scrooge and his adventures actually take a really big hit in this show. DT17 feels afraid of making Scrooge morally dubious. He's barely greedy or stingy in the show and there's not really any focus on his money. We don't see Scrooge being stingy moments like the crashout over the kids finding out about Della isn't very believable because I don't see why the kids would think Scrooge wouldn't spend money trying to save her.

Btw, in that whole story Scrooge did nothing wrong! Yes, he built Della a spaceship but as we see later, the rocket itself was perfectly safe and functional, Della only crashed because she flew it without preparations and during a cosmic storm! And after she did Scrooge nearly went bankrupt trying to save her. He genuinely did nothing wrong, and that's a shame! Because I want him to be in the wrong! The best part of Scrooge's crashout with his family in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is that it was completely his fault for being a despicable asshole. After that, the writers tried to lift responsibility from their main characters even more by making it so Bradford told Della about the spear of Seline and imo it doesn't really matter because Della was an adult woman who should be able to take control over her actions (especially while having 3 kids on the way).

As I'm writing this I realize I can't put all my thoughts on this series into one message so I'll write one final point. The main theme of the shoe, the importance of family is stupid.

Not only is it cliché and honestly pretty childish it doesn't really mean anything in the show. As far as I remember the show doesn't really explain why family is important. It doesn't go far family is good and maybe that loneliness is not fun, and that's incredibly basic! Not to mention that by the end of the show the term family loses all of its meaning because Scrooge considers everyone his family, the rodents his great nephew saw once, his coworkers and so many more. It just devalues family and makes it pointless. But at the same time it also overvalues it because nobody is allowed to have any individuallity outside of the family and do their own thing, and once they do their own thing the family also claims it. Personally I find it a pretty toxic approach.

Overall, DuckTales 2017 is an okay show, but it makes incredibly nuanced characters very flat and childish and unlike what they used to be while lacking any depth to its own themes. I think it can be fun on a first viewing but once I start thinking about what I saw it all falls apart.

DCRC Week #12

This week we're taking a slight detour from the main chapters of PKNA to read the very first PKNA Special Issue: Missing! (Which came out in 1997 alongside the release of Silicon). This chapter is basically the equivalent of an anime OVA where we get to see the various characters just kinda hangin out and doin stuff outside the main plot, which I think is fun!!

As much as I like to imagine scenarios between Odin and Donald in my head, Ducktales isn't just made of Donald Duck; so what would the relationships be like between Odin and the rest of the cast? So here we go:

Killmotor Hill residents

Scrooge Mcduck: Odin and Scrooge are courteous to each other, although Odin is annoyed that Scrooge unintentionally brought harm to Donald during his adventures, while Scrooge secretly believes that Odin is too young, and therefore inexperienced, to go into business with him.

HDL: Huey, Dewey and Louie admire Odin from the first moment they meet him (Huey for his intelligence, Dewey for his popularity and charm, Louie simply because he is rich), but over time they get to know him better and Odin becomes a second guardian after Donald Duck.

Webby Vandequack: At first she’s suspicious of Odin because no one really knows anything about him, and the fact Scrooge doesn’t trust him might have influenced her, but changes her mind after her grandma vouched for him.

Beakley: Being a former S.H.U.S.H. agent, Beakley already knew One, so it wasn't difficult for her to recognize him in his new body; she had thwarted several cases thanks to the information given to her by Uno so she already trusted the Artificial Intelligence, it is not difficult for her to trust him now.

Della Duck: Della never knew Donald had a close friend outside of the manor, but she always felt sad when her brother would prefer spend time with said friend than his sister and uncle, so even back from the moon Della is jealous of Donald and Odin’s close bond and would try to follow them.

Launchpad Mcquack: These two are polar opposites; they don’t hate each-other but never put them in the same room, you would feel the awkwardness from a mile away.

Duckworth: I don’t think ghosts and androids mix well.

And one dumb thing I like to do with (especially) Japanese voice-acting is looking up what other characters the VA voices.

And on Monday, I did that with DT17's cast...compared with JoJo's cast.

(Additional infodump that is actually longer and more serious:

As you can see from the list above (yes, that's it, afaik), the DT17 dub cast don't really star much in JoJo. Actually, they don't really star much (majorly) in other anime as well. The only other VA with a famous role is Della's, who voices Nami from One Piece (yes).

I think the most famous VA in DT17 are those for The Three Caballeros: Donald, José and Panchito, who literally also voice three characters from Dragon Ball (Beerus, Frieza, Piccolo, respectively). And two of them are guest stars.

There are many reasons why this is the case: First of all, I'm only looking at voice-acting. Some of the dub VA are actually not VA by profession, but instead, say, live actors/stage actors/narrators etc. IIRC, the previous official Japanese voice of Mickey Mouse, who had voiced Mickey for almost 3 decades, isn't even an entertainer by profession.

Second, some of the VA are quite young, both in terms of age and career. That doesn't necessarily equate to fame, but there is a certain relation.

So. Why am I saying all of that? Because despite all those things, the dub is fire. It is above average at worst, absolutely amazing at best. Call me a weeb, but I have never seen a Japanese dub that is worse than the original voiceover.

HDL sound just as distinct, Webby sounds just as hyper, Fenton sounds just as adorable, Gyro sounds just as crazy misunderstood, LP sounds just as the himbo he is, Scrooge sounds just as...old (there is legit an "old people's way of talking" in spoken Japanese). And of course, Yamadera-sensei perfectly replicates the Donald Duck speech...but in Japanese. (Donald speaking "normally" is literally just Yamadera speaking normally as himself)

The same goes for other animation dubs as well, such as LotTC (the two Sheldgoose are so damn funny), GEAH (Sam is the MVP there with his amazing voice change), or RotTMNT (I legit watched the Japanese dub first). The VA themselves may not be famous, but they still do an excellent job that could be worthy of the fame.

Mad respect to that dedication and talent.

Oh, and if that isn't enough: They dub the goddamn songs as well. They sing them themselves, in Japanese, with Japanese lyrics that fit, sound good, and are accurate.

Remember the "Waddleduck" theme? Yeah, they dubbed that. The "It's a Date!" song? They dubbed that too. Donald's "Hear My Voice"? Yamadera sang it himself, both in normal voice and Donald Duck voice.

And all those silly, out-of-the-blue songs from LotTC? They dubbed them. All of them. Sheldgoose's song to the moai and lava geckos is my favourite.

Actress Lee Jieun: Hi, i’m IU Lee Jieun who portrays the role Jang Man Wol in HDL. The actual drama is more interesting than the highlight video itself, so please look forward to this sweet drama this summer!

Q. What made you chose this drama and fell deeply for your character?

IU: Truthfully, I wanted to greet the audience with a brighter character image after my role in My Mister but didn't expect it to be this fast. One of my acquaintances asked me whether I've read the synopsis for Hotel Del Luna so I looked it up and fell for the strong and tough heroine. So i'm thankful for this role. I had lots of concerns at first but after meeting with the director and scriptwriters, they gave me lots of reassurance which convinced me to take on this role. I especially remember the scriptwriters told me "Jieun-ssi, if you meet such strong female character, please grab on it!" Their reassurance and certainty made me chose this character.

Director Oh Chong Hwan: Truthfully, the scriptwriters, production team and I thought only actress Lee Jieun would fit Man Wol's role and we said it among ourselves that we wouldn't start this drama until she joins us. To me, Though Man Wol goes all out being fancy and extravagant, she gives off this lonely and pitiful aura. Strangely, I get the same feeling from actress Lee Jieun which convinced me to cast her in this drama. After watching her performance on set, I thought I made the right decision and was proud of myself.

Actress Lee Jieun on Yeo Jin Goo: I was so happy to know that Jin Goo confirmed his role for this drama because I think he's so reliable and fits Chan Sung's role so well. He does a great job and I thought I have to work harder so I wouldn't be a burden to him. Our filming went very smooth thanks to him. Even the director also keeps telling us on set that JinGoo is a blessing to all of us. He always lifts up the set atmosphere and make us feel more energised. I think we have great chemistry too!

Actor Yeo Jin Goo on Lee Jieun: I thought I came well prepared but seeing Jieun-ssi, she was totally immersed in her character Man Wol. I think we didn't have to worry about our chemistry even from the start.

Actress Bae Hae Son on Lee Jieun: I have always been a fan of singer IU, but when I get to know her closely on the set, I felt that she's a truly meticulous and brave person who can fit the role Man Wol better than anyone else. The more I get to know her, the more I think the director did a great job casting her. Though it's no doubt that she would feel stress being the heroine, but she never fails to treat everyone politely and brightly. She always keeps all of us together and maintain our balance through communication. I think she is the best heroine ever.

P.O on actress Lee Jieun: When I first met her, I was like "wow it's IU, she's so pretty"

Kang Mina on actress Lee Jieun: I've always watched her on TV but meeting her in real life was like meeting a celebrity. We didn't have much scenes together so I hope we'll get closer later on.

Actress Lee Jieun on her role: "When I first met up with Director Oh and the scriptwriters, we all had different interpretation for my role Man Wol. This shows the diversity that this character contains which is very much attractive to me. Whether is it compliments or criticisms, I've received all of it when promoting as a singer. So I tried to consider from various dimensions when improving my role. That was how I got closer to my role because rather than throwing away all my past characters (in dramas), I tried to bring them along and combine their qualities into my current character. I also discussed a lot with the scriptwriters and Director Oh. 

We also discussed a lot about my image in the drama, especially my fancy outfits. Normally you see the heroine changes her outfit every episode, but for me, I have to change it for every SCENE! They also wanted me to put on different hairstyles and outfits that nobody has seen before. As you know, i'm not a very fashion person, so I worked hard on my own to make sure everyone can enjoy Man wol's style and appearance in the show. 

Though i'm so thankful to have met this role because it's such a blessing, but no doubt I feel pressure to live up the expectations of viewers. I'm sure there are still people who love and remember my previous role in My Mister and would probably pick her as my best portrayed role, so I will work hard to make sure everyone can enjoy Man Wol too, and maybe take over Ji-an's place in their hearts. Please make sure to tune into the actual broadcast. We will guarantee you a refreshing and sweet summer!"

Actress Lee Jieun on working with singers-turned-actors: Strangely, we didn't run into each other much when promoting as singers so it felt fascinating meeting them on the set. We had script reading and filmed a few scenes together, and it made me want to cheer on them too as a colleague.

Director Oh Choong Hwan wraps up the interview session: “Please watch our drama, Lee Jieun will make her breathtaking appearance. I knew that she was beautiful, but she's prettier in real life. So please watch it! It's an interesting, exciting, enjoyable yet sentimental drama.”

Okay, the way I would write it is that Scrooge was born in 1867 like usual, now for Donald I have 2 options, one is more accurate to Don Rosa's comics and the other is less accurate but doesn't make Della an underaged mother, the accurate version being 1923 and inaccurate being 1920. HDL were born in 1939 so they met Scrooge when they were 8 in Christmas 1947. Now for when the stories take place: I'd say most of the Barks tales take place between 1946 and 1950 with a notable exceptions. As for the Rosa stories, they take place between 1950 and 1952. And if we want to canonize the shorts they would all happen pre-1947 and most of the Donald shorts where the kids don't appear happen between 1942 to 1944 for the accurate Donald age, and 1939 to 1944 for the the inaccurate Donald age. And all the shorts with the kids happen between 1944 and 1945.

Now, why is that? Well it's quite (not) simple!

Don Rosa's a little something special takes place in 1952 anr Scrooge already has an established relationship with all of his (three) villains, so all Barks stories with them have to happen before 1952.

Now, why did I pick 1946 for 1950 for *most of* the Barks stories? Well, it mostly has to do with the triplets, the triplets are in fact kids and I want to make them stay kids in a reasonable time window. So for most of the Barks stories they will be 7 to 11, the only exceptions being stories written after 1958 (or sometime similar) when Barks had a weird art style change because of the bad paper he was provided and it made all the characters taller so I'm gonna explain the kids getting taller with puberty, so all of those stories will happen 1952 to 1954. Also I'd say about 3 or 4 Magica stories take place over 1952 and the rest take place after because I think it's fitting that her rivalry with Scrooge was the least developed in A Little Something Special and I think it's fitting that the more heated rivalry will happen after that.

Now for the Rosa stories taking place in between 1950 and 1952 is just because his versions of the duck cast were based on more developed versions with a lot of characters and stories already in the past and it should still be before a little something special which seems like a nice "final" story where Glomgold is left utterly defeated. The modern day Rosa stories that I want to note are mostly the Magica stories because I want them to take place right before A Little Something Special leaving Magica flat broke, so she needed Glomgold's help.

Now for the shorts I don't know if I'd consider them canon but mostly I think they would follow a young adult Donald and his struggles living on his own, that's why he's much more angry there. He isn't used to this and doesn't know how to deal with it. Hence the time frame and this also applies to the shorts with the kids but when they were very young kids instead of young adults like Donald (obviously).

But Idk maybe this canon doesn't make much sense and honestly I would prefer not stressing too much about it and just say either they're in the '50s without too much specification for dates or just put them in a setting that isn't kind of like the '50s but semi modern (but without cellphones and all that junk).

*if you pick this one, how would you make the rest of the family tree make sense? (is everyone else older, or do we not address the ages of donald/della/fethry/gladstone's parents? are there weird age gaps for the McDuck siblings? etc)

** chose this year because the gap between when Scrooge was Born (in-universe) and Scrooge was created (our universe) is 80 years. So I'm assuming his intended age is around that point when he was first made

Top five PK comics

I honestly don’t know their titles so I’ll just describe the plots ffddf

1) The version where the events of PKNA happens but the classic characters are still apart of the cast

2) Donald thinking he’s not appreciated as a superhero, so he enters a dimension where paperinik no longer exists. I especially like this issue because at some point other-universe HDL meet him and are like “We kept all your merchandise! You’re not going to leave us again right?” and Donald has proud uncle energy

3) The one where for one issue, Paperinik, PK, Double Duck, and Qu-Qu 7 separate from Donald, and DANG his identities are JERKS. So throughout the issue, each identity deals with fighting their counterpart’s villains (so Paperinik fights Evronians, PK fights the Beagle Boys, Qu fights the Agency, and DD fights Dr. Zantaf). It doesn’t go well.

4) Paperinik finds Gyro’s time travel watch and is sent back to the time of Fantomius (his predocessor), he accidentally flubs up John and Dolly’s first meeting so he seeks out Copernicus to help him fix his mistake and hopefully return back home

5) Donald accidentally eats some carcans and forgets he’s Paperinik. Gyro realizes his friend’s mistake and decides to help him reclaim his memory and fight the villain. We later learn that Gyro was just popping regular mint candies instead of carcans, and at the end Donald agrees it’s best that he doesn’t eat them anymore.

House of Mouse: Halloween with Hades: Wingmickey (Commissioned by Weirdkev27)

Happy Halloween all you happy people! We’re back to the house of mouse for our second halloween visit as Mickey Tries to get Hades laid, Donald tries to be spooky, Goofy goes into space and Donald and the boys gaslight each other. All of this and more under the cut!

How To Camp:

Look at this point anyone whose read my reviews before knows I love How To Shorts. Their funny fun and the gimmick of the snooty narrator doing this thing while Goofy does his thing never gets old. And given the last one I covered was a masterpiece, I was shocked to get another almost as good. 

How To Camp plays with the fomula by having Goofy use a tape deck for the how too  narratoin, though still thankfully the same voice... and by having Aliens abduct goofy and thus goofy explore their ship while thinking it’s the wilderness. 

The shake up is a nice tweak to the formula, using the contrast of what goofy sees and the headset for comedy as you’d expect but also just being plain fun watching Goofy tumble around a space ship as aliens try to catch him, then progress to trying to do a murder on him. It’s pure fun and I highly recommend you seek it out. 

Donald’s Halloween Scare:

Another truly excellent short and one of the best from the episodes i’ve covered this year by far. 

It’s also the rare one using the triplets as so far in an entire year of doing these I have not seen them outside of the quack street boys or quacking pumpkins, probably one of the most 2000′s sentences ever uttered by man or murder doll. 

But HDL are out in devil costumes, much like the one Donald wears in both this and House of Villains, and we get a nice sequence where Mickey, Minnie and Goofy give them a scare and then a pile of candy for trick or treat. Well Mickey and Minnie do, Goofy dresses up as a bunny because he has the holiday wrong and the kids are mad he got them eggs. Dudes i’d of killed to get a hardboiled egg for halloween. Still would. Maybe dress it up like Freddy or Chucky. Realy make it jazzy. 

So the little devils end up at Donald’s house, where Donald is , shockingly, a huge dick about halloween. 

His plan of course is to dress up like a Jason and scare them, chasing them off then stealing their candy. I dunno.. he probably woudlv’e made more of an impression as the Axeman. 

I just like that song. I can’t wait to hear a full versoin next year. Might even honestly buy it just so I can listen to it sooner. 

Anyways, our heroes are scared off but soon find out Donald was conning them and get back at him the old fashioned way: by making him think his Jasonsona is wante dto murder, chasing him around and scaring him and finally making him think THEY SCARED THEM TO DEATH AND PREPARING TO BURY HIM ALIVE. 

Donald promises to get them their candy back and gets them some new candy, all is well, and Goofy accidnetlys cares them as Santa. Which i’d chuckle at but as we’ll see in a few weeks santa is no joke when he’s off his leash. 

Halloween With Hades:

So now is time for our Wraparound. It’s Halloween at the House of Mouse.. again. For the first time. This episode came before House Ghosts and I mistakingly put it first. It’s also one of three halloweens the club has overall. Because like most cartoons the characters only age if the creators WANT them to. Same goes for comic strips and comic books. And it’s a shame as I DO wish more cartoons did gradual aging, with one of the neatest thigns adventure time did being letting Finn slowly grow up. Most other cartoons either take place in too short a timespan for it to matter (Gravity Falls (Which only did so in the finale arc), Owl House, Amphibia) or flat out have a case of can’t make me don’t wanna (Gumball, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons). The former is fine... the latter.. not so much. I get not changing a characters age just to satsify time, that way you can tell all the stories you can. But leveling them up just a YEAR can change things in a way that allows more intresting situation.. and for shows that actually cast children it means they can keep their parts instead of being recast because your too scared to have actual change or too cheap to pitch it down.  This.. this may be a button for me. NGL. 

So anyways it’s halloween 1 at house of mouse. Donald wants to scare people and has a whole runner about that where he shouts boo at people while wearing a devil costume and instead gets scared by the villians he’s trying to scare. It’s.. funnier than it sounds as there’s plenty of good varation my faviorite being one of the sisters from hercules taking out her eye and showing it to him. 

But while most of the people are happy, Hades isn’t because he’s alone and thinks love is for suckers. Given he used love as part of an elaborate scheme to try and ruin his nephew’s life and kill every other member of his family, he might not be the best expert on the topic. This is proven when he DOES find someone who piques his intrest: Malificent. If your expecting decendants jokes.. I got nothing. I haven’t watched it and my attitude towards doing so is very much “Can’t make me don’t wanna”. Unless someone paid me for it. Guys gotta eat. 

Hades tries sleezing on her, she shoots him down, and Mickey says “well why don’t you try being nice”. Oh Mickey you poor naive bastard.. son of Igantz Mouse, you have no idea what “nice guy syndrome” is do you? 

Still Hades sees Malificent seemingly enjoy Mickey’s schitck. You can probably guess what comes next

Sadly we don’t get a fun makeover montage. We instead get Mickey introducing THE NEW HADES... which is hades in mickey’s outfit.. whic his a mostly naked hades in oversized mickey mouse gloves and a mickey hat

No.. no one needed this. I mean he has abs which.. nice but even people who WANTED sexy drawings of hades or made them did not want “half naked hades dressed up as mickey mouse’ I’d say that’s no one’s fetish but at least one person probably has it so fair play to them. But for me there’s only one sane, resonable way to deal with this

This goes about as well for hades as the burning in my eyes is going for me, and Hades gets pissed. Thankfulyl NOT at malificent herself, he’s not tha tlevel of douche, but at Mickey’s terrible advice.... which.. bud... you probably should’ve known this was a bad idea the second it involved mickey mouse asking you to strip naked. 

Hades chases him and prepares to kill him which turns out IS Malificent’s fetish and the two happily walk off together. Mickey claims credit for this. 

Halloween With Hades is an okay wraparound, and the sight of hades in that horrifyign getup IS funny enough to get some laughs but overall it’s just kinda there despite the fun of finally doing a crossover ship. With all the wacky potetial for one, it woudl’ve been nice to show some other pairings like that for funzies as a gag or something. Instead this was.. okay it just wasn’t really memorable ASIDE from crossing the mover. it was also annoying to hear James Woods for a full ep, but him slowly turning into a total ballbag is not something the series coudl’ve predicted, so it’s not the shows fault. It’s fine but the other halloween special is geninely better. 

As a whole the episode is decent. The wraparound is just eh, but the two shorts are pretty dang good so it’s still worth watching. So with that we have one last HOM scare cooking for you coming on halloween as Jafar makes a move and the house of mouse becomes a house of villians.
