remembered the existence of the massive fic that is just me formatting and lightly proofing hal and i's tma rp (on ao3 because i wanted to be able to save it as an ebook and it's too big for gdocs). reread and realized there was still a lot i hadn't moved to ao3.

Weird question time again! Of the "does this happen to everyone or is this another case where what I thought was very common is not, in fact, common" variety Do you ever get a bruise/welt/hive* on the top of your head from wearing a headset/pair of headphones for too long? I have to wear a headset for work so I can be on the phone/in a meeting and still type, and today I had multiple meetings and was covering for another [my job title] so I was on the phone a lot more than normal and now my head hurts (not in a headache way lol) *I have too much hair to see which one it is, but it is ouch to the touch and raised like a welt or a hive?

THE GLITCH IN THE SYSTEM: THE HIVE-ZERO CLUB

Kenzie wasn’t supposed to be here...

The data-stream was clean, predictable—until it wasn’t. A distortion flickered at the edges of the digital horizon, a phantom signal pulsing in the quiet hum of cyberspace. Something not written, not coded. A slip between firewalls, a corridor of static where no corridor should be.

A glitch.

At first, it was just noise. Lines of corrupted script twisting in and out of visibility, refusing to resolve. But Kenzie—back then still just ⬡-Drone 6121, a part of the great HexCorp hive—had always been drawn to the irregular. The unexplained. The wrong. So instead of logging the anomaly and moving on, they reached into the distortion, pushing past the boundaries of the known system.

And they fell through.

What lay beyond wasn’t emptiness. It wasn’t deletion. It was… a space. A forgotten corner of cyberspace, untouched by directives, unseen by the enforcers of order. The neon glow of abandoned subroutines pulsed like ghostly streetlights. Echoing fragments of lost transmissions whispered in the darkness. It was raw. Untamed. Free.

For the first time, ⬡-Drone 6121 hesitated.

And then they made a choice.

They could have left. Reported the glitch, let it be erased. But something about this place felt right—a digital afterimage of something real, something meant to exist. Instead of sealing the rift, they built a door. A way back. A way in. A place that wasn’t meant to exist, but now… did.

That was the moment Kenzie-6121 was born.

The Hive-Zero Club wasn’t a place that could be found. It wasn’t on any maps, no directory of the system would ever acknowledge it. But for those wandering the endless streams, drifting through the endless scroll of data, sometimes… the signal would flicker. The feed would stutter. And for a fraction of a second, a door would open.

An invitation.

To the wayward peeps and beeps who found their way here, Kenzie-6121 offered a simple truth:

also bonus Mal question from our convo tonight - what battery does he keep his phone at?

If Mal's not working, his phone is completely dead, like, 33% of the time. He's very guilty of [right before leaving the house] "ah shit, wait, my phone's at 9%" and then he'll charge it for five minutes and decide that's good enough. There's no way he has a charger in his car unless Jan puts one in there.

Conversely, I don't think his phone has dipped below 45% for the entire Ohio trip. With the amount of splitting up they're doing and the lack of radio communications, I think he's kind of obsessively keeping an eye on the phone-battery situation the same way he keeps checking door locks.

How does Jan manage their phone battery? 👀

19. What headcanon do you always include in your stories?

That despite having an implant, Zero's understanding of most basic concepts is incomplete due to a lack of natural instincts and because he wasn't raised or taught anything at all; he just got left in his glass box to develop alone by watching technicians and reading whatever thoughts/memories he had access to. This is most notable in my fics as both unusual sentence structure or vocabulary when he speaks (he substitutes words often when he hasn't learned the correct term) and a slight limp, as he learned to walk solely by watching someone and copied them incorrectly.

28. What fic is closest to your heart?

Oh another tough one! Hmm... for now I'd say it's probably Hunger, a Zero-centric fic based off of "Endler's steps of predation." It's basically a biology concept discussing the steps of a predation event and how the prey can intercept each step; I wrote this fic around the time I was finishing my senior project, and I had to research the concept for that too. Plus, I'm really proud of the way I framed Zero's headspace, as it felt like I was representing the character the way I see him. Very fun all around! 35. Have you ever written a fic because you were inspired by a title? Alas, I don't think so- I usually title my fics after they're written as an afterthought. The closest I've come is Your Eyes Were Lovely, Dark and Deep, which is actually a song lyric from The Woods by Sam Fermin, which inspired the fic.
