I just called my local-ish comic store to ask if they could order the first issue of the New Scaremester comic and the Pride issue, because when I went in a couple weeks ago they only had the second one.

Silly springtime doodles

Happy easter to everyone who celebrate! This update was so amazing. the site look great and the update itself had a great balance of spooks and fun.

I had really been looking forward to the frank and Julie content and the update really didn't disappoint. Their whole springtime newscaster segment in the radio was so fun. I especially liked the entire Eddie part of it. But honestly the entire radio segment in general was probably my favourite part of the update. I really wanna animate some of it if I get the time.

The siblings were great! they somehow sounded exactly how I thought they would and totally different at the same time. still getting the hang of drawing them but it was a fun challenge.

One that really shone too in this update to me was Howdy. He's always great, but he genuinely cracked me up so many times in sweet briar and doing the interviews. And Barnaby playing the comic riff was just perfect lmaoo.

but honestly all the characters were just so amazing. I was grinning like an idiot the entire time.

I'll probably post some more spooky fanart soon, because holy hell the Julie videos and the Wally voice recording was spine chilling.

And then he landed on your website.

It was called “Rent-A-Date”—an offensively pink, sparkly site with glitter cursor trails and comic sans titles.

Cute was an understatement.

“Rent-A-Date 💘” blinked at the bottom like it was daring him.

Johnny had half a mind to leave.

But he didn’t.

He scrolled down.

There were pictures of you—candid, natural. None of those overfiltered selfies, just someone with a kind smile and a chill vibe. You were cute, sure, but what really got him was the vibe. Something about you felt… real. Familiar, even.

So he clicked.

He filled out the form with a raised brow.

The form asked nothing else though. No personal questions, no contact info. Just the place and the time.

If he was being honest, he didn’t expect much. This was all just out of curiosity.

Johnny could already hear it.

“You clicked on a glittery website with bouncing hearts? Are you okay in the head?”

But screw it. He was curious.

He picked the discounted funny-person payment method—half upfront, half after. He was funny. He knew he was. If you didn’t laugh, he’d just pay full. He was fine with that.

Then he clicked Submit.

Johnny showed up early. He always did.

Café corner seat, two chairs, sunlight pouring through dusty windows. He wore a black bomber jacket over a plain black shirt and jeans, clean but casual.

He looked good. He always did.

You were 12 minutes late.

He was pulling out his phone to type a strongly-worded ‘Welp. Scammed.’ tweet when you walked in, slightly breathless.

“You’re late,” he said before you even sat down.

“I know, I—”

“I thought I got scammed,” Johnny cut in, raising a brow.

“Honestly, kind of impressed. It would’ve been my most expensive ‘oops’ yet.”

You laughed softly, brushing hair out of your face.

“Well, surprise. I’m real. And I’m really sorry.”

Johnny squinted.

“… You look better than your photos. That’s suspicious.”

“Oh, so now I’m the scammer for looking better?”

He cracked a smile, and you laughed—and something about the sound made him feel like this wouldn’t be a one-time thing.

You two clicked.

Conversation flowed with surprising ease. You were sharp, witty, and had a quiet sass that Johnny genuinely admired. At one point, he leaned in and said, “So I’m guessing I qualified for the funny discount?”

You sipped your latte, met his eyes, and replied, “You’re funny enough to pay full price but still think you deserve a discount.”

He cackled.

Somewhere in the middle of a joke about how café chairs are modern torture devices, you mentioned your little brother. It was offhand.

“He’s the real golden child,” you said, smiling to yourself. “Sakuya. He’s in college. Smart, responsible, kind, adorable. I started this whole thing to help with his tuition.”

Johnny blinked. “You’re serious?”

“Yeah. Just wanted to take pressure off my parents. He doesn’t know. I don’t think he’d let me if he did.”

Johnny leaned back, eyes softening.

“That’s honestly kind of amazing.”

You shrugged, brushing it off.

“It’s all temporary though. I’ll shut down the site once he’s good.”

You two talked for hours until the café dimmed their lights and Johnny realized five hours had passed. He was mid-laugh, having just finished a dramatic reading of a bad Yelp review.

“I haven’t laughed this much in forever,” he said honestly.

You grinned. “You’re actually funny. Congrats! You earned your discount.”

Johnny laughed. “What if I didn’t?”

“I’d have made you pay double.”

He handed you the rest of the payment, slipping in a generous tip.

You blinked. “This is too much…”

“You said no refunds, not no tips.”

You hesitated. “Okay… tell you what. Keep the other half and use it for the next one.”

He paused, surprised. “You think there’s gonna be a next one?”

You smiled. “If you want.”

He grinned. “I’ll definitely book again. Looking forward to it.”

When he asked to walk you home, you hesitated.

“That’s actually a no-no,” you said, smiling politely.

“It’s one of my rules. I never let clients walk me home.”

“Ah,” he nodded in understanding. “Makes sense.”

But when he looked a little disappointed, genuinely, not manipulatively, you sighed.

“I don’t do this,” you muttered. “But I’ll make an exception. Just this once.”

He beamed. “I promise I’m a respectful exception.”

You didn’t think he’d book again. Most people said they would but didn’t.

But he did. Within four days. Paid full price.

When you arrived at the cinema, Johnny greeted you with a warm grin and a little popcorn bucket already in hand.

“You remembered the movie?” you asked, a little surprised.

“Of course,” he shrugged, but a soft smile played on his lips when he saw your eyes light up with excitement.

Afterward, he brought you to karaoke.

You nearly choked when he sang ‘Versace on the Floor’.

“You can sing?!”

“I dabble,” he smirked. “You sound surprised.”

“I am! I thought your ‘funny’ discount was the best thing you had going.”

“Wow. Rude.”

You laughed and bought him ice cream as an apology.

The final stop was a new coffee shop you’d mentioned in passing last time. You froze at the sight of it.

“How did you know?”

“You said it opened this month and had almond Nutella croissant waffles.”

You stared at him, stunned. “That’s really sweet...”

He ordered one of every pastry and made you rank them by crunch. Time flew.

Eventually, you glanced at your watch. “Wait—Johnny. It’s been seven hours.”

He blinked. “What?”

“Our time limit is five hours.”

“Oh god. I’m so sorry! I wasn’t trying to—”

“It’s fine! I didn’t notice either,” you admitted with a small smile. “I was having fun.”

He relaxed. “Should I pay extra? Overtime fees?”

You waved him off with a reassuring smile.

“It’s absolutely alright, don’t worry. I had fun anyway.”

He gave you a sheepish grin.

“Can I pay extra next time for overtime?”

You paused. “Actually… there won’t be a next time.”

He blinked. “Oh?”

“I put the site down this morning. You’re my last booking.”

“Oh.”

You looked down.

“Not sure if you remember, but this was just a temporary thing. I already paid for my brother’s final tuition the other day.”

“For Sakuya.” He suddenly said as he reached into his wallet.

You flushed. “Stop.”

“No, really.”

You held up a hand. “Johnny. I told you, it’s fine—”

“I insist.” He pressed the bills into your hand.

“Use it to buy him something awesome. For being awesome.”

You almost teared up and Johnny noticed.

“Don’t cry,” he whispered. “I didn’t bring tissues.”

“…I’m not crying.”

“You are. Want me to sing again to distract you?”

You laughed, wiping your eyes.

You slowed your steps as your apartment building came into view. Johnny turned toward you.

“I was thinking…” he began. “Next time, maybe we could go out again… but not like this.”

“Not…?”

“Not rented time.” He smiled softly.

“A real one, if you want.”

Your heart skipped.

“Yeah, that’d be lovely.” You said, fighting the huge smile tugging at your lips.

He grinned, then held out his pinky.

“Promise you won’t make me fill out another Google form?”

You laughed, locking pinkies with him.

Hello! I’ve been reading WLB from some time now, and I am still absolutely loving this comic every time.(on my 4th reread lol) WLB has inspired me greatly along with WC content and (also great!)creations by other creators to the point that I am almost about to script my own comic, with a few scenes that WLB had a huge influence on. Though, I can’t help but be a little overwhelmed when I actually think of creating one, mostly because of the fact I lack the skills to draw comics. Believe me, I am shit at panelling lol. But also l‘m a bit scared because even if I actually end up making my own series it absolutely could end up flopping and that would probably make me lose enthusiasm. I don’t necessarily want to make money out of my comics but rather show others my stories and characters that I love, but I have a history of making and posting oc art just for nobody to watch and kinda giving up.(even though I’m aware of the fact that this happens to practically everyone all the time, it still hurts) The (real)question is if there is some advice you can give to beginner/wanna-be comic artists, and how did you feel when you first posted The Recruit if that’s your first comic. I’m sorry if this sounds like a vent, and feel free to pass this if you want-just know you’re a great inspiration for many people. Hello! I'm very glad you've enjoyed WLB!

A webcomic can for sure be a daunting and overwhelming thing. Most artists are a one man show, and knowing how to do Every Aspect Perfectly is an impossible task. I think it's important to remember everyone starts somewhere, and it is hard to get better unless you Start.

I mean, the first comic pages I drew digitally looked like this.

The comic lasted 6 pages before I got tired of it, and then I started The Recruit.

(which was over 430 pages long and started and had quite a style/writing change throughout the 7 years I worked on it)

You learn so much by just doing. There are a lot of helpful free resources online now a days to make the learning faster! There are tutorials on how to panel! And I think just reading comics in general is a great source of learning. Pay attention to the things you like (paneling, simplification process, color palettes ) and implement them in your work!

I think it's really important to figure out the level of detail you want the comic to be. I don't think it's wise or sustainable to put 100% effort into every aspect of it. It will burn you out. It's good to consider what level of shading (if any) you'll be willing to do for hundreds of panels, what level of background detail, how many colors the characters should have, and figure out what your focus is.

I've met a lot of comic artists over the years, EVERYONE has a different method or different focus. Creating is not a universal experience!

As for having your work be seen, it is honestly a lot of luck. Back in the day for TR I would just submit to all of the deviantart warrior cat groups and people would find it that way. deviantart groups are pretty dead now so I am unsure if that is any good now.

I personally really think ComicFury is a wonderful place for new artists. It's default page always shows the latest comic, so everyone always has an equal chance to be seen. You can be on the front page every 12 hours (i think, it might be 24..) and with a striking icon and consistent posting, you WILL find people.

It's not the largest site, but it is my favorite for comics.

I do not like the mindset of a comic "flopping." I think it takes time to build an audience. It is very unlikely for people to find your comic overnight, it will very likely take at least a few months of consistent posting to find a few engaged readers. I know it sucks to feel like no one is seeing your work, but it's just something that takes time.

Cat comics do tend to find readers faster though, so if that is your goal, I do hope you find success!

You could also post your updates in comic/art related places, like discords or post panels on bluesky or instagram. really any site or app that posts an image.

I also think consistent uploading is a strong key to building an audience. And to do this, it really helps to have a backlog. Meaning you draw like the first 10-20 pages of you comic (or however many) and upload one or two pages a week. The more your comic is seen popping up on their feed, the more likely people will be to finally click it. I usually do not click on comics I see once or twice, it usually takes a few weeks of me seeing it pop up before i decide to check it out. (talking about on Comicfury to be clear)

Once you've established you are dedicated to your comic, people do not mind if you take breaks. (and if they do, fuck em)

Also, having a community of friends or creators is a huge motivator. Show your work to friends! Share in a community of comic creators! Some things my friends have said to me about my comics has lifted my creative spirit more than anything.

This is turning into some 3am ramblings but to summarize my points:

•Find a style that will work for you to sustain a comic. (do not make 100% effort art pieces)

•Upload on comicfury (great comic site, equal opportunity for new comics) (I would also cross post to other platforms and link back to CF as a primary comic site)

•Work on some pages in private, so you can upload consistently once you begin your comic! (I would update daily for maybe a week and then switch to weekly pages, just to get the best chance of being seen + consistent posting. so that would be good to have at least 10 pages of backlogs. 7 for the first week, plus 3 weeks of backlog at that rate)

and the point most dear to my heart;

•Don't be scared of change.

I know a lot of folk wait and wait to make their comic until they are perfect artists or writers, but like, you'll never make anything if you wait for that. Change is so natural and normal in webcomics, in all art really. I think if you shade for 10 pages and decide you hate it, it's okay to change how you shade or drop it entirely. Change your art style. Change how you panel pages. Change how you do backgrounds. Change anything and everything you want. Enjoy the process and tell the story you want to tell.
