シュミット／ローゼンバーグ『How Google Works』（日本経済新聞出版社）

グーグルの "how"、すなわち「グーグルは『いかに』働いている／（グーグルとして）機能しているか」を紹介した本である。だから、この本を読んでもグーグルのプロダクトやサービス、『ジェフベゾス果てなき野望』がアマゾンについて語ったような "who" や "what" は分からない。

グーグルのプロセスやツールについて学んだら、ぼくたちやぼくたちの職場がグーグルみたいになるだろうか。そういうものではないだろう。たとえばこの本は採用についていろんなことを書いているが、現にある企業文化を度外視してこの本の採用技術を導入しても成果は上がらないだろう。

だから、冷静になったときこの本から学べることはとても一般的なことに限られる気がする。たとえばこんな感じだ。有益だが、ものすごく一般論である。

どんな分野でも、他の人々に一歩先んじる最高かつ最も簡単な方法は、それについて知識を深めることだ。最適な方法は、文献を読むことである。忙しくてモノを読む時間などないと言う人は多いが、それは自分の仕事について知識を深めることを重視していないと言っているのと同じだ。自分の仕事について、誰よりも多くの資料に目を通しているのは誰か、ご存じだろうか。経営者である。だから経営者的な発想に切り替え、資料を読もう。

もうひとつ、「自分のいまの仕事を客観的に説明しろ」というのがある。グーグルではOKR（Objectives/Key Result）と読んでいるらしい。社会的にひとの協力あるいは助力を必要としている人はSNSでの自己アピールの指針になるだろう。

もう一つ、透明性の具体例といえるのがOKRだ。OKRとは個々の社員の目標と主要な結果である。すべての社員が四半期ごとに、自らのOKRを更新してイントラネットで公開することになっており、他の同僚がどんな仕事をしているか簡単にわかる。社内で会った人物がどんな仕事をしているか詳しく知りたいと思ったら、Moma（引用注：グーグルのイントラネット）に行ってOKRを見ればいい。単に肩書と仕事内容の羅列ではなく、取り組んでいる仕事、大切に思っている仕事を自分の言葉でまとめたものだ。その社員が何にモチベーションを感じるかを確かめる一番手っ取り早い方法だ。

I have had these thoughts bubbling away in my head for like...eighteen months or so now (it will become very obvious why shortly) but the discussion in this post has pushed me to write them down: I think societally we HUGELY underestimate how motherhood for primary caregivers, particularly first-time motherhood, can be a source of vulnerability to radicalisation.

There is obviously huge cultural variance here, but for a lot of cis women becoming primary caregiver to an infant in a capitalist Western society represents a time of immense vulnerability because in general you are:

Incredibly sleep-deprived (which has well-documented knock-on effects for your judgement, mental health, etc)

If you gave birth, recovering from a significant challenge to your physical health (even in the best-case scenario)

Isolated from your previous networks and communities of people in full-time work

Completely separated from the context of your prior career goals and achievements

Under huge amounts of stress to learn how to care for an infant (don't get me started on breastfeeding)

And on top of this, you are also be experiencing a huge amount of messaging about how all this is natural, wonderful, something you're meant to do, something you should love doing, and something that you must do for the welfare of their child. It's a huge amount of pressure and life change even when everything goes right and there's very little cultural space to express negative feelings about it.

Any group of people who offer community, support, and affirmation to cis women in this situation are going to have a really good shot at radicalising them into some very weird and dangerous headspaces and in fact we see this happen all the time - think antivaxxers and TERFs. It flies under the radar because of the hazy positive glow that associates with motherhood and babies and also because we don't take the radicalisation of women seriously I guess because they rarely shoot anybody, but...yeah. It is such a vulnerable time!

Anyone else up thinking about Ratio's big, strong, secure arms and how warm and all-consuming they could be in a hug or embrace. :/ Anyway

I just wanted to draw them being cute and seizing a sliver of a moment where they could have some PDA silly time without actually having any eyes on them. They're public figures and working adults with very clear boundaries between public persona and private life (to varying degrees of "in a sad way"), so while it may be in Aventurine's nature to constantly blur lines for various agendas and self-preservation (read: play "the flirt" without an aligned goal), I believe that in an actual relationship they'd be fairly private.

It's kind of fun to break your own rules, though! Ratio would be more upset about the consequences, though. He's a little bit of a hypocrite, which is devastating for someone of such discipline, but nobody's perfect.

I'm of the mentality of, "If you're tired of working on it, then just post it!", so here are some fun peripherals that I didn't feel like adding:

Three Signals' puppet often ended up being the subject of the art pieces made by local artists, be it advertisement or art studies. Children would scribble little caricatures of them when bored. So it wasn't uncommon to see posters, studios filled with sketches, murals or stained glass featuring them - back in the day.

These have been stripped, painted over, and banned to replicate. Today, one may only see it peeking through a layer of paint peeling off, scratched on a wall, or on stranded piece of a sketch hidden somewhere very deep in a studio corner.

Love to see iNaturalist betraying the goodwill of thousands of volunteers that help identify peoples' observations in exchange for a grant from Google's AI slop department!

Love how the FAQ says that iNaturalist has already been using "a type of AI" to help offer identifications for photos, as if that's even remotely similar to using a fucking LLM to try and give accurate species identification "tips".

Because that sounds like an amazing idea, especially since the experts on this site spend their entire lives studying certain taxa to differentiate between species. Let's act like these volunteers WOULDN'T want to write these tips, like they haven't been asking for a user-run wiki for years. I think instead we should just use their time to train our model. Which, by the way, doesn't fucking care if the "tips" its giving are even accurate, no matter how much training you give it.

And I won't even get into the other ethical concerns of all of this.

We're truly deeply rooted in an age of misinformation and disinformation. We need to advocate for better and more accessible science communication now, more than ever. If you use iNaturalist at all, you NEED to speak up about this.

It's been 5 years since she almost became a pyromanic.

High school came and went with no friends (Thad doesn't count, he's everyone's friend)

She graduated with no honors and no energy left to deal with people (Who the hell gets excited for a piece of paper anyway?)

And ended up working as a miserable employee at her dad's company (no, she refuses to elaborate how she got there)

At least she can rest assured that there's not much danger beyond the outpost doors.

But it kinda feels like she wasted 23 years of her life.

Alright, that's all I got. Now you know Uzi became an existential-crisis adult (the angsty teenager phase expired, please buy a new license) and she has to wear a helmet because the WDF is dangerous! (Dangerous to your hopes and dreams.) Okay, see ya in another year HAHAHAH
