How to write... Germany!
- first, forget everything you have ever heard about German efficiency. We are not efficient. Germany is notorious for construction projects that take ages (Berlin Airport, Elbphilharmonie, Stuttgart 21), high-level corruption and one of the worst railway networks in Europe. Like, I'm talking "one in three trains is severely delayed and even the other two are up to six minutes late" bad. German Internet is even worse.
-second, German angst is very very accurate, though. Germans tend to be afraid of everything. Rules, regulations, debates, politics, really everything here is about the fear of what could go wrong. This is why Germany really is not a modern country. Every new technology, everything that somehow challenges the existing order is considered a threat by most people. Germans love authority, love following the rules. This is why we prefer to react slowly and cautiously to a world in movement instead of trying to implement our own ideas.
- I am serious about Germany being old-fashioned. There are many many places where cash is the only possible mean of payment. Fax is still a common technology here. Many Germans are afraid of the Internet because they think the radiowaves harm their bodies. And don't even get me started on mRNA vaccines.
- very important: many things Germany is famous for are exclusively Bavarian. Bretzel. Sauerkraut. The word Kraut in general, the rest of Germany calls cabbage Kohl. Weißbier. Oktoberfest. Polka. Weißwurst. Dirndl. Lederhosen. You also have to be aware that the rest of Germany doesn't like Bavaria and Bavarians don't like us. Real separatism still doesn't exist, though. Both sides know they profit from each other. But Bavaria always tries to bend the rules in their favor.
-Germany is more self-aware about its past than any other country I know. Like. The Third Reich is covered A LOT in school and in several different classes. It is considered very important to make people know about the Nazi crimes so they never happen again. It doesn't work, though. There's still a bunch of literal Nazis walking around. But the general idea is good, especially the US and the UK could learn from it.
- the German division still impacts the present. Western Germany is way more populated than the east and is way wealthier. No big German company is located in the east. There are a lot of negative stereotypes about eastern Germans, too, and many are understandably mad. Many of them feel like they were betrayed after the reunification.
-northern and eastern Germany are mostly protestant, western and southern Germany are catholic. Muslims are especially found in urban areas. All of Germany is slowly turning atheist, though.
- you don't see a lot of German flags out there unless there's a major football event. Germany is not very patriotic like other European countries are, localpatriotism often replaces patriotism.
-university isn't free, but pretty cheap
-nearly everyone from the younger generations speaks a decent English. Common third languages are Spanish and Italian. Many immigrant kids also speak their parents native language- such as Turkish, Arabic, Russian and Polish.
-Germany doesn't celebrate an independence day, but a reunification day. It's on 3rd of October and we pretty much do nothing on this day.
- though there were many different German tribes, German names are quite universal. Some are more associated with a specific region, but there is a lot of migration within the country, so whatever name you give to your character, it won't be too strange. Many names are associated with certain generations, though, you gotta be careful with that (Helmut is a grandpa's name)
-Germans treat animals like they treat humans, which means they have got a lot of empathy for them, but would never actually take action to help them
- most mayor western countries, even the most racist ones, have somehow accepted they are immigration countries now. Germany, meanwhile, apparently hasn't quite got this yet. Many Germans still fail to understand that the 20% of the German population who have got an international background are here to stay. There's an implicit belief that immigrants will go back to their home countries one day and it confuses many Germans if they don't.
-Germans love football and tend to support their local teams, even though Bayern and Dortmund are popular among the whole country.
- the most popular children's TV show is about a depressed piece of bread
-Germans prefer criticising weaknesses over complimenting strengths
-unlike any other country I can think of, the most densely populated region in Germany is not the area around the capital, but the West, the Rhein-Ruhr area. This is due to the coal mining and the steel industry in this area. Berlin is a big city, but similar to Madrid, once you passed the suburbs you are in the middle of nowhere.

'the F1 movie needed to have Brad Pitt fuck his female engineer because there needed to be sexual tension!' BORING. If they wanted sexual tension they should've made it historically accurate and true to real life and had Brad Pitt fuck his teammate

In the modern day, I think that Ludwig has mostly quit smoking cigarettes, but Gilbert has not. (I've said it before and I'll say it again, what's the point of being a semi-immortal being if you can't have a goddamn vice; also Gilbert went through the scare of 'hey maybe I am dying' so I think he'd have all the more reason to just do what he wants.)
However, being around his older brother does make Ludwig more inclined to get pulled into his vices, such as smoking on a cold winter day while waiting for the S-Bahn or ordering that next round of beers when he really shouldn't because he has an early morning meeting and it's way past his bed time, but Gil already made the order and it's already here, so who is he to waste a perfectly good German beer?
And I think as much as he complains and scolds his brother for encouraging bad habits, there's another part of him that appreciates having the "excuse" to let loose for a moment, to indulge himself. And more importantly, to be able to do that with his older brother while he's still alive and well.

Ever since I went to Austria (against my will) I can‘t stop thinking about that one guy König from CoD. More specifically I can‘t stop thinking about how people write his German dialogue in fics (don‘t even get me started on the grammar, I have examples…).
Like, I know it‘s not a bog deal and silly, but Austrian German and German German are not the same, and I knew that before going to Austria, but now I can‘t read anything without immediately thinking „he would not fucking talk like that“. It‘s amusing though, to think about how, if he were to actually speak his native language, it would sound less like „Hallo, wie geht es Ihnen?“ and more like „SERVUS, wos mochT‘s Läb’n so boai düir m‘n Fræunt?“

inspired by this post here are my top five chaotic/ funny tour moments (that I personally experienced)!
1. meeting dnp & showing them the phrats only for dan to drop his and joke that he killed his rat-self
2. being behind dnp at tsa at the airport in copenhagen but being too tired/ scared to say hi only to see them again at baggage claim in berlin and somehow leaving the airport in the midst of them and their crew while wearing a fucking wad hoodie…
3. all of us waiting at the wrong stage door in amsterdam. so when they came out through the other one no one noticed and they had to shout to get our attention
4. berlin choosing “scheiße” for like every single role model or nole-model answer and the answers written on the screen getting more and more unhinged bc of the “ß”
5. all the phannies leaving tit amsterdam somehow getting stuck in 1st class on the train out of the city and not being able to move to 2nd class bc the train was too full. so all the phannies just chilled with the business men going home from work

Ein wunderliche und erschröckliche Hystori von einem großen Wüttrich genant Dracole wayda Der do so ganz unkristenliche marrter hat angelegt die mensche, als mit spissen als auch die leut zu Tod geslyffen
A wondrous and frightening story about a great berserk called Dracula the voivode who inflicted such unchristian tortures such as with stakes and also dragged people to death
#hellsing#alucard#kouta hirano#translation was found in a comment by u/lazyfoxheart on r/Kurrent#fun fact this is the highest quality version of this image that exists online#i know because i've been looking forever for a version that's clear enough to actually read what hirano wrote under '1443'#but there weren't any so i had to take matters into my own hands#the real image on the back of the guidebook is only 2 inches tall so i had to take this with my smartphone and will my hands not to shake#anyway i'm pretty sure it's supposed to say Eğrigöz (the location vlad was imprisoned) so yeah. thank you hirano very cool#if i might rant for a sec it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure that out because i didn't have the guidebook at first#and in the images i could find online that part was just a blur that looked suspiciously like a person's signature and i was like. who tf#i was thinking matthias corvinus since he issued some political propaganda against vlad iirc but it didn't match his signature on wikipedia#then i thought it might be vlad II dracul's since he probably had to sign an agreement to send his sons over as hostages at some point#but that didnt seem right either so i kept skimming vlad's wiki page#and then i was like goddammit...hirano.....you just misspelled Eğrigöz didn't you.. ....#i maybe should've made a separate post dedicated to this instead of writing a novel in the tags but eh#the hellsing brainrot runs deep#also- i put it in the source link at the bottom of the post but the german inscription is copied off a real woodcut of vlad from 1491#except instead of depicting him as an adult hirano drew him as a child which gives the inscription a very different feel imo#the one final thing that interests me about this is the fact that hirano published this calendar in 2002#which is REALLY early in the series. like this was before volume 5 came out??#i have no idea why he decided to do a massive spoiler drop in a random piece of japan-only merch#sandwiched between a drawing of alucard as john travolta from saturday night fever and integra as a fish no less#it makes me really curious to know what the fan response to this was back then. like did people even know who this was#maybe im just an idiot and everyone back then was like 'ah yes its alucard as a 12 year old. how very informative'

It feels extremely silly that only today did I realize that pantry and panadería are slightly similar-sounding for a reason >_>
(The English word pantry is one of the many, many common modern English words derived from Anglo-French: in this case, panetrie, from Old French paneterie, "bread room" ... Spanish panadería also has a complex etymology, but all are related to Latin panis, "bread.")
#anghraine babbles#deep blogging#linguistic stuff#saw a post that was very aggressively going on about how english is GERMANIC (true) and has germanic words in it too!!! (duh)#and the whole discussion ended up arguing that the existence of common germanic words means the many common latinate ones don't count#as 'true english' or whatever and also all languages have borrowings on the level of french-derived vocab in english (not true!)#and it's only lexical and the english grammar is still fundamentally what it was (not true at all actually though not mainly bc of french)#like. sorry that the existence of 'cat' in english implies to you that 'animal' is not a real english word!#don't know why the entirely true statement that 'english is fundamentally germanic' always seems to devolve into nativist bullshit#but damn does it ever.#people are fixated on the vastly oversimplified 'french derived = elitist prestige register from foreigners; germanic = common real speech'#in reality normal everyday english chatter constantly and necessarily includes plenty of french-derived words (often unrecognized)#like pantry! the longer any english document or speech goes without any french- or latin-based words#the more ridiculously and artificially childish it sounds#esp given that some /ultimately/ germanic words in english came into it not from old english but via medieval or anglo-french#often taken from old norse. so 'germanic' real talk from real folk vs dastardly french corruption can be even more complicated#than the obvious xenophobic nonsense motivating the whole anglish thing#even my guy (and known old english lover & french hater) jrr tolkien could only /minimize/ the french-based vocab in lotr#if he'd gotten rid of it altogether he'd sound like he was writing for four-year-olds#english#anglish hate blog#okay for the tags:#anghraine rants

Did you know?
Did you know why in european folklore and myth trolls have such a strong connection with bridges? It's kind of strange if you think about it.
They are scandinavian in origin, but appear to have no connection to bridges in their initial conception. During the 9th century, trolls appear to be a sort of nature folk, Prose Edda mentions a troll woman describing her kin as guardians of graves, but there are no mentions of bridges that i could find until the mid-19th century.
What happened between the 9th and 19th centuries with trolls then? Let me tell you. See, i've been a bit unreliable for dramatic effect and occluded a story from the 14th century, which is actually not of directly norse origin, but contains the trolls, and appears to describe the beginning of their relationship with bridges.
In my search for the earliest troll-bridge myth i have stumbled upon a retelling of a translated fragment from a work of Albert Suho, who was a priest from lower saxony (specifically the city of Osnabrück as wikipedia informs me).
It tells a folk-song about a troll, who found friendship with a nixie, which is a kind of norse water shapeshifter dude that plays the fiddle to lure people onto thin ice or leaky boats and drowns them (classic water creature behaviour). The text never refers to the nixie as a nixie (i don't read low german but nothing there seems to refer to it as so either), but i feel pretty confident that it is a nixie, because, well, the fiddle.
So the troll and nixie are besties, but after a disagreement regarding the body of a traveller that died with his foot in the river they go through a messy break up. The nixie think the body is his, since again, his foot was in his waters, but trolls says that the nixie didn't technically cause his death, he just found the guy, and also the traveller has a pretty necklace, and the troll would like to have it. So they break up, and the troll is so bitter it starts chucking rocks into the river, which somehow builds a bridge (trolls aren't known for architecture so i assume it works as kind of a waagh system in warhammer 40k). The bridge is sturdy and chill and also allows the troll to never see the nixie again, since he can just go over the bridge. He also kills a guy on said bridge because he was laughing at his arms?? which kind of gets glossed over. In the end of the song, the troll goes to his family to his mountain home and tells of how cool it is that he never has to see his friend again, and then sits at the bridge being grumpy.
Of course it's just one story, i will leave a link to the questionable source at the bottom, but i really like it as an origin of troll bridge relationship. Also the song has major vibes of troll and nixie being lovers but that might just be me.
Anyway, here's the link: clickityclackity; i hope you enjoyed this foray into the world of germanic folklore.
