I've watched spn and no I don't think wincest is inherent to the show??? Like maybe u don't have siblings that act the way they do, which is fair- most don't. Your entire argument relies on some nonexistent line of familial behaviour that *you* think devolves into an incestuous one. I think you're the one not understanding what you just saw. I also do feel the need to point out that most of the people that ship wincest are def talking about a romantic relationship which is just incorrect as per the writers, actors and literally everyone else saying its not romantic. But ppl are allowed to be crazy about fictional characters so I don't really have anything much to say on that.

Personally, heres what I think is happening *IN CANON* i.e, this is what i think is going through their heads and hearts during their actions onscreen:

Dean and Sam are codependant to the point that they dont have a sense of self outside of their relationship and role of the other brother. Most of the emotional support/intimacy/nurturing/trust/etc that adults typically get from romantic or sexual partners is gotten via their brother. They struggle to create bonds with other people that are beyond friend or casual sexual partners. Deans connection to Castiel is a rare exception. They fill very similar roles in their day to day life as husbands or wives do in normal peoples lives. Due to their lifes, privacy is near impossible and its so rare that its almost seen as a breach of trust to keep anything at all a secret(i.e, having interests, posessions, relationships, etc that the brother is unaware of is shoking and both have gotten angry about the other having anything in their lives that they are unaware of)

So basically, a large amount of what constitutes their relationship are things typically attributed to sexual or romantic partners.

This is what is often referred to as the canonical wincest or weirdcest.

Do i think they had sex canonically? Hell no.

Do i think they ever talked about their relationship canonically? Hell no.

Do i think they knew that their relationship skewed way closer to the kind of dynamic usually seen in couples? Yes.

In fact i think that most of the back and forth of their dynamic (pushing the other one away only to yank him back in, one season they think they need to split up. The next season they are saying thwyll never leave each other) is just them becoming aware that they are basically acting emotionally the way most romantic partners do, freaking out, trying to distance themselves only to realize they are all they have. They cant reach this level of intimacy with someone else.

I dont think they ever did more than hug. But emotionally they filulfill the same needs normally found in a commited sexual and romantic relationship.

Perhaps as someone who is asexual and aromantic whose had relationships that were long term committed relationships where we cohabited and raised pets and children together all while being very reliant on each other for emotional support and intimacy and validation without any sex or romance involver, I am able to look at these two brothers and easily see that they are basically in a queer platonic partnership.

yknow what. i don't care for Katara x Aang as a ship, as depicted within the canon. i dont think it was built up properly. Their friendship is absolutely excellent, and kids crushing on eachother is normal and totally healthy, it's all very sweet. but as an actual relationship, it's kind of a great big nothing.

The show frames their relationship as peaking with the kiss in the final episode and I just do not buy it. Where's the rest of the relationship? I believe that they have little kid crushes on eachother, but I don't believe that it's deeper than that, mostly due to a drought of those little intimate moments together just the two of them that are the actual building blocks of a relationship. like how Aang and Katara both learn about romantic love in little bits and pieces across the show, and what it really means to love someone in that way, that it isn't some kind of destined thing but rather something that requires dedication and commitment, but most of those moments are one sided where katara learns something but aang doesnt and vice verse rather than it being lessons they learn together. Like when they kissed my reaction was like oh yeah, i forgot that was gonna be end game. It just seems really tacked on and I dont give a shit about it. It doesn't feel like a climax to a series-long conflict, it feels like checking a box. The narrative work just was not put in. it's by far the weakest element of the show

and dont tell me the thing with the monk is supposed to be the building of the relationship, because first of all it's literally one sided, katara literally doesn't even know about his spiritual conflict about that, and second of all, the monk was talking about attachment to people in general. thats not building the relationship for endgame, it could have easily been about her being his most importsnt best friend and the personal conflict would have stayed the same

(Please don't apologize. You may call it pessimism but I see it as realism and I truly appreciate it. I've seen people SO excited to see the cast back this week and all the excitement about the new season, optimism for canon buddie, what hair/tattoos/wardrobe might look like. But I cannot be bothered about whether Oliver will keep his fluffy hair or have any new tattoos or Ryan's mustache because I don't want another season of boring, repetitious storylines that don't do anything to the characters, especially those of color (thinking of the cartel and Mara right now)

I'm hopeful that because season 8 will be a full 18 episodes things won't have to be as rushed or thrown together at the last minute as season 7. But yeah, please don't apologize for your opinions because you're not the only one thinking similar thoughts <3)

like personal feelings aside for the mustache, i think we’re giving the writers too much faith in portrayal of queer characters to actually say that it’s eddie “embracing queer culture” simply bc it looks like eddie mercury… we’re talking about the same writers who gave the main wlw couple a cheating plotline, have boiled down buck’s sexuality to just sex, and have relied on playing into stereotypes of mlm/wlw side characters rather thsn actually putting time and thought into it… like it’d be one thing to say “it’s a nod to freddie mercury” if the show has actually shown any kind of care beyond using sexuality plotlines for cheap drama (henren) but the reality is that they haven’t shown us that we can trust them in that way yet.

and who knows maybe it IS a nod to freddie mercury, but we don’t know for sure and im not going to set myself uo to be disappointed yet again when its just as likely to be s nod to them making eddie an antagonistic character with gerrard… yeah, that plot wouldn’t make sense for eddie as a character but neither did the vertigo plot so who’s to say tim wouldn’t go for it?

at the end of the day, i am just not looking forward to s8. nothing yet has given me any inclination to actually watch it until we are shown that they are making strides to actually tell a meaningful story that doesn’t rely on minorities for tokenism plots or putting them through needless pain again. yes this show is a drama, but there are other ways you can create drama (hell it’s a show about first responders) than putting poc characters through the fucking wringer time and time again, profiting off their pain, while simultaneously telling lowkey racist stories that involve the fucking cartel coming out of nowhere to burn down a LA fire captain’s house???

i stopped wwdits just cuz i didnt wanna keep up, but i Saw what they were doing since nd it's CRAZY lol. you're right that "shipbait" as a term is more in tune with whats going on, but sometimes there is such a homophobic air to how ships & queer characters & their queerness is treated in the shows, which makes the "queer" part of "queerbait" relevant.

what i understand of wwdits, they kept teasing the relationship til that last scene theyre together where its made obvious guillermo has some sort of feelings then it cuts. on one hand, these are two literal queer men who just arent together. but on the other, their gay feelings/sexuality isnt taken seriously the way heterosexual pairings & feelings are (like nadja & matt berry).

the term "queerbait" is very entrenched in the conditions of queer representations, and how queer viewers feel baited into watching shows that seem to promise queer characters or romances but never deliver. Though. I will say. that i always found this to be a misdirect, seeing as how a majority of this discourse is about pairings not characters, and majority of the pairings are m/m, and not all shippers are queer. and there is a willful misunderstanding of the Conditions of Queer Representation that really doesnt understand the history of representation on film & tv, and a misunderstanding of what homophobia even is? like a lot of strong same sex relationships between men on tv are made under not just tv heterosexuality but Societal Heterosexuality. Most people are heterosexual and most people are homophobes and most tv is heterosexual & homophobic. the chemistry you see isnt gay, it's heteronormative, in all the contradictions and repressions of heteronormativity gays have produced EXTREME anxiety over for centuries. I never understood what you could expect from a tv show not built by people who are open to writing and acting in fringe sexualities. supernatural had like 3 gay characters in its entire 15 season run. marvel still has only like TWO. i'm veering into my general lack of understanding of "queerbait" as a concept.

so now in the big 21st century in less normative tv shows, with more sexual fluidity, you see shows like wwdits that have actual gay characters, but that heteronormative tension still exists. cuz hetero homophobes still make these shows. righteous gemstones is the only tv show i can think of that set up a relationship like that, with that tension in mind, debated fulfilling the sexual undertones, then COMMITED to the gay relationship. actually, solar opposites also does this though it obviously wasnt the plan. two awesome tv shows that are made great by their commitments. comparing these two shows to shows like wwdits and possibly 911, they all have popular fan ships and they all have actual queer characters BUT where they differ is how much they care about the homoerotic tension present in heterosexual male friendships. which is how much they care about gay sexualities & relationships & honestly queer ideologies. and if they dont care about all that, then they dont understand why people are so so into these pairing to attach them to their identities and the STRONG emotions associated with affirming these identities. but viewers have to understand this too... you want these people to make good on the dismantling of heteronormativity? you want these people to act it out for you? that is, if you even really care about the "queer" side of this "queerbait"....

I do not know how I ended up here. I don't know WHY I ended up here, except that I'm some kind of masochist.

Like I was all prepared to be 100% team wangxian otp and read all the fic and shit, and I started out so promising. (And I do love them...) But then. Then. That little demon brought a bird to class. And the other little demon protected him during the Wen thing. The stabbing ?? The warning as Meng Yao was leaving to huaisang DESPITE actively bleeding. The pleading to Mingjue to let Meng Yao stay despite no evidence of Huaisang ever really standing up to question NMJ decisions before like that (esp in front of other clan members) (other than with things like blowing off Sabre practice) THE FAN CLENCH. MY HEART. And THEN they committed their various atrocities during which the no turning back point was hit for them so many times and yet i do believe the remorse was there and so too was some affection still, twisted as it was by time and hatred and isolation and i... I just....I slipped?

There's so much there!!! (and please keep in mind I'm mostly talking from a cql/the untamed perspective, though I have seen the donghua and am aware of book cannon, I just kinda prefer the show as the version I take to heart (with some notable jgy or Huaisang based exceptions bc i'm nothing if not willing to excuse their pretty boy mid-divorce war crimes))

These two have such a deep shared history that spans the entirety of the cannon, and their relationship is extra fascinating on rewatch as you can more clearly track the downward spiral of events.

There's also the tragedy that it COULD have been avoided, was so close to being avoided several times bc JGY is not really EVIL, (any one who says this is being super reductive imo) but he does preserve himself above all other things and people through sheer learned necessity (with the exception of xichen and isn't that also a beautiful part of sangyao tragedy?? That so clearly xichen and JGY were destined to be the tragic counterparts to wwx and lwj's relationship not nhs and jgy? That xichen was the only thing JGY ever sacrificed true parts of himself for, that huaisang knows that he could have done the same for him, but didn't? Because there was too much history with Mingjue to let it go, and also bc the devotion or affection he held for huaisang when they were both on the mountain never surpassed that point. He had too much caution to truly be himself, and Huaisang, I don't think could ever truly see past JGYs status in the way that xichen was able to since he served as his big brother's vice general and also his appointed companion to a degree. ) And where does that leave huaisang? Where he always is. ALONE. On a mountain he never fit in on in the first place. Where does it leave JGY? Stuck in a permanant customer service role to his awful father and branded further untrustable as a spy. Humilated and broken down to the point of just. So much murder. (Some of which I still maintain tain as a public service coughcoughJinGuangShancoughcough)

They are so much alike and yet so different in such key aspects, that I also have to believe they were meant to act as parallels to one another, just like wwx and jgy, or xichen and wangji. The planning and manipulation they both do (in their own ways bc i am in the camp that while huaisang is smarter than the average bear, smarter than he ever wants to let on bc it makes his life easier, he isnt able to truly outpace JGY's ability to craft a situation. What he is good at is manipulating people and social situations, and adapting his outlined plan extremely well on the fly- with the exception of maybe xichen. I dont think he meant to truly hurt xichen like that. I think that was a natural panic that if JGY was allowed to live it would mean Huaisang actually had to die at some point instead, Though I do also think perhaps there is some lingering resentment there that leads to it to bc why is JGY worth pardoning after his crimes to xichen? Doesn't this mean he inherently valued JGY over Mingjue, over Huaisang’s own pain and anguish? (he did, but not maliciously, lans are love blind we know this))

The tragedies of nie huaisang are inextricably linked to the tragedies of jgy and vice versa! Technically, huaisang, as a bastard of the clan leader with one of his concubines, (I think that's right) should be discounted as a noble son, esp considering his weaker nature and lack of talents dictated to be valuable by the standards of the nie clan. He should have the same status really or at least a status more closely similar to jgy who is constatly looked down on because of his mother's position and bastard status, despite his constant hyper competency, as we see so vividly. And yet Huaisang is given title and rank and (some) respect where JGY gets trodden into the mud and shit of life, even as he succeeds in raising the jin clans success through his actions and talents. Meanwhile, huaisang is thought to be a useless leech by others, untalented in the ways of ruling or anything that's deemed an actually respectable skill by clan leader standards. A pathetic little dude who doesn't know how to do anything, and yes, he does get cast as a headshaker in the eyes of the people, but it's never his background thats brought into question as to why he might be failing. It's considered a result of his personality, not his upbringing. And even then he doesn't get shit talked as much as JGY does. Huaisang has all the privilege that JGY was never afforded, and does that color JGYs view a bit? Does it make him just bitter enough that, when combined with his father’s looming threats and taunts, and Mingjue’s inability to ever let anything JGY does go, that he's willing to hurt huaisang in such a way, even just as a byproduct of his mission?

Huaisang’s plan is successful, bc people discount him as incompetent, yes, but also bc they still see him as a noble, as someone of enough inherent value, diminished though it may be, that he weilds that influence even when playing the fool. JGY doesn't get that respect even at his height of his power and competency as a ruler.

They are, neither of them, strong cultivators. But that factor only really affects JGY bc it means he has to fight even harder for acceptance and validation. Huaisang also gets the luxury of CHOOSING not to be a strong cultivator. Because his position in life IS secure, he can slack off. He is allowed to try his hardest to avoid the fate of his family and do his utmost not to cultivate in that manner. Which I think, too, causes some of the resentment. On both sides. Huaisang never has to work a day in his life, has barely any expectations to live up to and still gets the respect Meng Yao is constantly robbed of. And for huaisang- On top of killing his brother via musically-induced, full-bodied rage embolism, JGY is now also the reason that huaisang is thrust into a position he was entirely unprepared for way before he was supposed to be.

And we know, we KNOW that JGY is responsible for so many of Huaisang’s pretty little things. His beloved indulgences granted not by his own brother, but by his doting san-ge. Things that got burned or destroyed by Mingjue simplu for the fact that a) they were from JGY and B) they are not the type of things NMJ cosidereds respectabke hobbies or skills. A large number of his fans and painting supplies are gifts from JGY, and he stood up for and encouraged those hobbies against the person he probably fears the most at that point, Mingjue (even if he's already actively trying to kill him by then). And huaisang seemed genuinely pleased that JGY had found acceptance and was getting what he (thought he) wanted. The friendship and affection was real, just not near strong enough to withstand the crimes of the other.

And oh boy that divorce was rough and bloody and beautiful and tragic and I just love the messy nature of the relationship, how deep and how twisted it went and became. And i think, right up until the very end, JGY didn't truly want to believe that Huaisang was capable of doing this to him, I don't think he ever wanted to hurt huaisang again the way he had to when he killed Mingjue. Use him? Maybe. But not in a malicious way, not by his standards.

I am happy to read any sangyao content I can get, however! I love reading about them as companions on the mountain, growing together, bonding. Maybe young and in love? I love reading the gradual drifting apart. The years they schemed and used each other. The final divorce. And what comes after. Or what could never be. Any content, I will take, and it depends on where in cannon we are that a particular square is filled in.

Jgy had to fight for both acceptance and sheer survival, and huaisang never really had to do either. Except maybe during the ~10 years of the gap when Huaisang had figured him out, but was pretending to be useless to achieve his ends. You could argue the mindset that aside from just avenging his DaGe, he was also concerned about his own survival bc what if he became an Inconvienience instead of just the annoyance he was playing up to be? If he actually stood in Guanyao's way? It would be much easier to take him out than Mingjue, realistically. But what would be that threshold to have JGY actually do anything? Are Huaisang’s histrionics and uselessness useful to him? Or a result of guilty indulgence? Or left over fondness from a ti.e they were so close? Some combo of all? Who can say and I fucking love that uncertainty about them

Saying all that, these two are the poster child for OTP I don't want to end up together in Canon, lol. Unless it's one of the many time travel fix it aus, they simply have too much history and shared issues and rage between them to ever make sense working out. But their stories are so incomplete without the other, they are inexorably linked, and I just think they're neat!

(Please don't come for me cql fans. im sure I've misunderstood or posted an opinion that's utterly debatable on here. But like, also. I'm tired and I love them and I don't care.)

I have more to say about them that you'll probably get to hear at some point when we talk, but for now, they have BROKEN MY BRAIN.

marloakworthy.......... my beloved ............... a part of the reason why I love them so much is because I feel like they kind of complete or make up for each other's qualities if that makes sense . Or like they fill in the weaknesses of the individual pairings? Which is why I love them TOGETHER.

LIKE I LOVE OAKWORTHY but there's always been this inherent problem where Normal is obsessive because he's desperate for affection and Hermie is flighty because he's afraid of commitment and vulnerability. And I looked at that and went THE SOLUTION IS POLYMORY. Because if Normal has a consistent and stable relationship he can fall back on than he wouldn't be as intense with Hermie and therefore Hermie wouldn't feel as trapped and could open up more. I think Hermie is very afraid of just how much Normal loves them because he cannot reciprocate to the same degree and it makes him feel guilty trying to do romantic scene partner stuff because it feels like leading Normal on for feelings that they won't ever have in reality.

ENTER SCARY !!!! I think Hermie and Scary DO have good chemistry their relationship would be a lot more loose and casual which makes it fun! It's like they're both really good actors and so it's fun for them to do more of Hermie's scene partner stuff and having a safe space for Hermie to act and play around with roles is good for him I think he needs it for enrichment JABEVAHAHA while with Normal Hermie would feel some pressure to Just Be Himself despite not knowing what that is. SOMETHING HE CAN RELATE TO WITH SCARY! I think the two of them can really connect on the whole. Lying about who you are so much that the mask BECOMES you and you lose track of whats real and not. I think it's really interesting to compare their identity struggles and they can give each other a certain perspective that Normal wouldn't totally understand. Scary and Hermie are both very cynical people and even though they try to be better and more soft and comforting it is not entirely natural and they're learning as they go and sometimes its nice to have someone around who's also really imperfect and learning beside you.

AND NORMAL. MY SWEET PRECIOUS BOY EIEBWFAHAHAHHA. I think he brings a lot of light to the two of them. Like I said they're both very cynical so while it's nice to have someone to relate it's also easy to get trapped in a downward spiral feedback loop. NORMAL THOUGH. He's the one who pulls them out of it. He's the kind of person who loves with all his heart and his earnest and steady affection is just very comforting to people like Scary and Hermie who are used to people leaving. Norm and Scary just Get each other due to them being foils and thematic parallels JWBEGAHHAHA I think out of all the individual pairs normscary is the most stable. I FEEL LIKE I DONT EVEN HAVE TO EXPLAIN IT? The way they understand each other and can support each other . It's just kind of inherent to their characters and their dynamic. But I think Scary can be afraid that she's going to push Normal away or make him leave and so that can lead to stuff like her not pursuing or being vocal about her affection or swinging hard the opposite way and panicking purposely shoving him away because it hurts less when she chooses it. Thats what its like. Hermie is there as a third person another perspective to be like HEY. YOU GUYS ARE BEING DUMB.

I really see marloakworthy as more like. Normscary is the steadyfast main romantic relationship while Hermie comes and goes but these two are his favorite people.

I'm a known polywagon enjoyer and while I DO love all the other inner dynamics within polywagon I think marloakworthy has my favorite parts boiled down. Which is why it's my favorite dndads ship atm!

I have not finished the episode yet but I've just gotten to the Fukufuku backstory (specifically the part where they just met and its night and they're lying on the floor together) and, these two are fucking dark timeline Renga from sk8! 'The way of the sword is enjoyable!' and 'I'm going to master the sword alongside you' vs 'skating is fun!' and 'I want to skate with you infinitely' I swear Fukuchi even did the same hand movement that Reki did at some point. Energetic sunshine (at least at the moment) x calm and collected. I am getting such strong Renga vibes from that scene and it's driving me insane.

I must say, I don't really have much to say on the Meursault section. It was good! The animation was great as it usually is for the Meursault sections, Sigma was so pretty I love him and! Dazai did the thing where he played with Sigma's hair! Woo! Fyodor was his usual level of kinda ugly in anime form, Dazai is showing emotions! more of the sillies, Dazai fucking stood on Sigma, which is delightful, aaaaaaand it's started to flood! Fuck!

And to once again revisit the old gays, Holy Shit that was so gay. Nobody told me that the Fukufuku backstory was a Sports Anime tm that turned into a war drama in the second season! im not sure what to say about this one tbh! they dont have any glaring flaws in their relationship, just find it hard to see what theyd bond over other than what i already stated above, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. in terms of them having a committed romantic relationship though itd definitely require a lot of patience and understanding. i can see infected trying to get people to involve spud in conversations more and he'd find the way she talks funky and silly. though i can also imagine infected finding spud to be kind of a bummer sometimes but thats something they can work out. i mean its not like spud particularly likes talking about her trauma anyway and would find more confidence talking about her interests and even trying new things when hanging out with infected

first and foremost a few things i want to write before this post properly begins:

im not going to tag this as anything bc i dont want to push it into any space. i really just wanted to write down some of my personal fandom observations/experiences.

this post isnt me hating on anybody, im a firm believer in blocking people/tags i dont like

this post will discuss my personal dislike of wolfstar & sirius black and how fandom is (mostly) at fault for this dislike. if you dont want to read anything like that this is your warning, no hard feelings fr i honestly just wanted to yap

so.

when i first got into the hp fandom, i was probably what. like, 10? my favorite ships were drarry and wolfstar, and i was obsessed with both. i was a firm believer in wolfstar being the one true ship for sirius and remus. i was a complete remadora hater (which, to be honest, i still kind of am, but now i have more reasoning than simply "i dislike that it goes against wolfstar". i think this is a perfectly valid reason for not liking remadora, it's just not my reason). for a couple of years, i would write teddy lupin as teddy lupin-black and completely erase tonks from the picture - im pretty sure i have at least one oneshot up on ao3 rn that does this. now, the whole "erasing the canon mother in favor of a mlm ship" issue is more relevant to me in terms of jegulus + harry + lily, and i know that i cant stand when i or anybody else erases lily (or any other mother, really), so i think this says a lot about how committed i used to be to the ship.

then, for a couple of years, i drifted away from the fandom. i wasn't all that invested in it back then, not like i am now. i was on tumblr, but i mostly posted writing snippets and oc introductions rather than looking at fandom tumblr.

even after a few years, when i came back, the fandom was a very different place than it was when i left. which is great, imo! jegulus is one of my favorite ships. i've met so many great people. i've read some amazing fics and joined some great communities. but... wolfstar. it changed a lot, and not in a way i like.

my sirius black is fem. i just want to say that now. i almost never talk about sirius, bc to be completely honest, fandom has ruined him for me to the point that i cant even write him myself. (once again, this isn't against anyone. it's just a personal opinion.)

the only wolfstar fic i ever read and come back to is ten reasons (to go to michigan) by greyeyedmonster18 because i found it once and liked the characterizations of sirius and remus. (i totally recommend this, btw - go check it out! it's very good.)

anyway, let's get to what i was talking about earlier about fandom "ruining" wolfstar and sirius black for me.

see, when i think about wolfstar back when i shipped it (wolfstar that is more based in canon, as well, bc back then i was still engaging with hp whereas now i havent touched the books, movies, or anything else since then), i see them like this: sirius is caring and loyal and impulsive and reckless and cool. he's fiery and sort of miserable and desperate to be around for his godson. remus is bookish and smart and polite. he has issues - boy, does he - but he's also caring and diplomatic. despite all he's gone through, he's remained a genuinely kind, fair person. he, too, wants to help harry.

to me, all this is why they worked so well together. remus could control sirius, yes, could calm him down, but really, they balanced each other out. sirius could help remus speak up more and remus could help sirius quiet down and give everyone a chance, as remus tended to do, at least to an extent. to me, this was an example of a perfectly balanced, healthy relationship. to me, wolfstar was two middle aged men who are undeniably good for each other, who make each other better, who can bond further over a desire to help harry, their late best friend's son. they are angry about peter and the war and everything, but they have each other, and they both are going to stop this war for harry and for their friends.

i grew up in an accepting community. i have gay uncles and other queer relatives. i, however, was never taught about anything queer, and was severely lacking in any material to use for self-discovery. in other words: i didn't have any idea of my queerness for quite a while, at least in my book, because i didnt know about the possibility of queerness. my uncles are, to put it bluntly, not my favorite people, and certainly not people i am or will ever be close with. my cousin, who is gay, is also significantly older than me and has always lived at the very least halfway across the country. so, when i saw wolfstar - a healthy, balanced, gay relationship - i latched onto them. (drarry, too - read literally one fic of them, followed it religiously, and it was pretty much the same thing: a healthy, balanced relationship. there were problems, both between harry and draco and within their world, but they were able to work through them together. the big difference here is that i actually still like drarry, and i still read it occasionally, unlike wolfstar.)

today, i see wolfstar like this: sirius is feminine. this is not a problem. my problem is everything after that, because after that, sirius is also tiny (short and thin) and dramatic and annoying and whiny. remus is tall and smart and he swears like a sailor. he is jaded by his experiences and more apathetic than anything else when it comes to the antics of his fellow marauders. (any time i see someone portraying him as upset or caring in some way, now, it feels out of character, at least to a point). remus is also, almost always, a top. which, hey, do whatever you want, but do you see where im going with this? it's an issue ive seen multiple people talk about. the issue - or rather, issues? misogyny and homophobia.

today, most of the hp/marauders fandom makes sirius into a very small, feminine person who is dramatic and who complains a lot and who is submissive to remus, who is tall and strong and dangerous and mysterious. remus, who completely dominates sirius both sexually and in maturity and stature. of course there was smut back when i was first in the fandom, because there's always been smut, though i never read it as i was, as i have mentioned, very young. and i was able to avoid it completely. now, wolfstar as a ship seems very sexualized. in general, the fandom has become more sexualized, but wolfstar especially, at least in what i've noticed. once again, do you see the problem here? a mlm ship turned into something that looks much more heteronormative, now with the added bonus of the sexualization lgbtqia+ people - especially people in achillean relationships - face? (note: wlw relationships are also extremely sexualized, but im specifically mentioning mlm relationships bc wolfstar are traditionally an mlm relationship and because i more often see mlm relationships sexualized by people in and out of the queer community, while i usually see wlw relationships being sexualized only by people outside of the queer community.)

so, let's review, just from my perspective. i, a queer person with barely any exposure to irl queerness as a child, latched onto wolfstar because they were an example of a healthy, balanced, mutually beneficial romantic relationship between two men, contained within a piece of media i liked at the time. i left the fandom for a few years, during which i was exposed to a whole lot of gay shit and began to properly discover my identity. by the time i reentered the marauders fandom, i had more or less figured myself out. i rejoin the fandom and see that wolfstar is now often portrayed with a very misogynistic, heteronormative dynamic, and the ship is also very sexualized. first, i distance myself a little bit. then a lot. now, it is at the point where i do not interact with wolfstar content, never seek wolfstar out in fics (this, alongside with my total inability to read longfics, is the biggest reason why i haven't read and don't ever plan to read atyd), and tbh consider blocking the wolfstar tag at least once every couple days. (ive blocked a lot of tags, but many of my mutuals are wolfstar shippers, and it's generally such a big ship that im very hesitant about blocking it.)

these are just my thoughts that i have been wanting to share for a while now on my views on the progression and change wolfstar, as a ship, has seen over the past decade. i think that it is important to point out when i see themes of misogyny, homophobia, sexualization, etc. in fandom, especially within a fandom so dear to me as the marauders fandom is and with one of the fandom's biggest ships. so yeah. i understand that this will make some people annoyed (on the rare occasion i mention my dislike for wolfstar in any capacity, which has only happened like twice, i am told i am wrong for having this opinion by multiple people) and some people mad and some people very mad, but tbh, i don't care. at the end of the day these are fictional people and this is a fandom based on the imagination of the fans rather than the source media's shitty author, and despite all that i blabbed about above i am still a very happy and active member of this fandom. im happy to hear the thoughts of anybody on this topic, really.
