thoughts on kagurabachi antagonists (as many as you want)!!

oooooooooh boy. this is going to be a super long one i think, so i’m going to have to throw a readmore up somewhere in here

i’m going to be going in order of appearances for this

norisaku “daruma” madoka - daruma should be a relatively forgettable antagonist. sure, chihiro does some cool stuff against him, but that’s about it. his fight serves as a way to show off enten and chihiro’s overall state at this point in the story. that’s the end of it! guy gets beaten, goes home.

except that’s not all. the stuff that hokazono did with daruma post fight has stuck with me for literal years at this point. i find myself returning time and again to chapter 8. the story that hokazono gave this random one-off villain was so insanely fucked up and i love it. the shot of him screaming at sojo that he’ll die with him cutting to sojo calmly walking out of the car, and then the reveal that he froze norisaku AND that he left his sister alive so that the explosion would be what killed her, especially considering sojo would be the only person to know all this, is genuinely sickening. ugh. love it.

genichi sojo - on to the main man himself! cannot stress enough how fucking cool this guy is. he has some of the hardest panels in the entire series, and more fanservice than any other character, both in the gratuitous pg-13 nudity shots and the amount of cool shots that will inevitably be used for amvs once he gets animated.

it’s clear hokazono really really likes this guy, and i can’t blame him. sojo rocks. this guy clutched up against a squad specially trained to take him down. that’s a 1v6 AND they had home turf advantage??? absolutely vicious work. plus, the way he keeps coming back up in the story, either via constant mention of his crimes, events building off of his past actions, or hokazono just straight up giving us a filler chapter of Sojo Guy Funny Moments during a break week is great.

also, the themes present in sojo vs. chihiro are great — death of the author vs. author’s intent isn’t a thing we get to see a lot of, but it’s done really well and i’m surprised at how often sojo’s ideals are brought up even 50+ chapters after his demise!

kyora sazanami - kyora is an amazing follow-up to sojo. sojo is far more of an up-front violent man who doesn't shy away from action, and kyora is that to an extent as well, but he takes a much different approach. kyora is an extremely cool-headed suave figure who never loses his temper (at least for most of the story), and prefers to have his guards (read: child soldiers) take care of any unsavory business for him. his devotion to his family is second only to his devotion to his business, and that being the thing that does him in in the end is just delicious irony.

soya sazanami - i already have a post about soya, in fact! i'm a huge fan of this guy, which is somewhat of a controversial take, understandably. i think he, and every other sazanami villain, is a great example of someone who is part of a cycle of generational abuse and didn’t break free of that.

yura - we don’t know much about yura. what we do know is shrouded in 15 layers of mystery. i have no doubt that down the line, we’ll get more lore about him and the hishaku. however, for now, all i can really say is i love how unserious he is about his deeply serious job and his swag is insane.

magatsumi wielder/sword saint/kensei/hokazono why are you like this about names - words cannot describe how fucking hyped i am to learn more about this guy. WHY IS HE LIKE THIS??? WHAT WAS HE LIKE BEFORE??? HOW DID MAGATSUMI PUPPET KYORA LIKE THAT???

seiichi samura - mr. the pretender by foo fighters himself!! i love this guy. i love samura so much. i love love love him. he’s so so so so so amazingly written and every new thing we learn about him is just another way to twist the knife in my heart when he dies a few degrees more. i’m not even sure he counts as an antagonist, if i’m being real. uruha may not even be dead! either way, i’m still counting him on here because i’m really excited to see where his story goes.

i agree with you on the playlists, though. while i'm not the best at music and i think a lot of my takes are pretty modern and not very set in 2009, i think it's really stupid when dave playlists trying to reflect him as a person have two rappers like yung gravy and eminem. i get that people think it's funny and they put it there to try and make it look ironic. when i think of something dave listens to ironically, i think of viper, 60percenthomo, djclent, teejayx6, and lil b. i think we miss his irony schtick by a long mile. dave's mischaracterization in the fandom is horrendous. but that's just my opinion. also, people don't give credit to how cool dave actually is! they make him a lot lamer, which, i mean, he's still lame, but not to that extent.

my favorite trivia for characters is usually just whatever i think is funniest so just keep that in mind. that's not always the case but you might see it become a pattern. oh the other thing is whatever is most soul-crushing so yeah.

Ichika - either the fact her name comes from how her parents met (because i think it's really sweet) or that she accidentally discovered miku when she was watching videos on her dad's tablet and opened a recording of a miku concert

Saki - she used to listen to the song Time Machine when she was in hospital (at Ichika's recommendation) to remind her of family and friends. It's the in-universe reason why she is featured on the cover. This is actually one of my favorite facts in the game overall.

Honami - she is surprisingly good at flirting

Shiho - not one I've posted before, but in Run! Sports Festival! she couldn't bring herself to throw any of the balls in the ball toss because they had cute animal designs on them

Minori - she once passed out because Haruka wished her happy birthday.

Haruka - she likes penguins because she thinks the way they waddle is cute and she likes how round a lot of penguin merch is

Airi - she followed all of Shizuku's campaigns and bought all the magazines she was featured in when she was still a member of Cheerful*Days. She insists it was just research.

Shizuku - either that she usually has a thermos of miso soup on her to eat after practice or archery club or that she isn't good at texting. i haven't posted either of these before

Tsukasa - he's the comedic relief and there's a lot of really random shit i know about him because of that, so my favorite fact about him is whatever will have the most impact in the moment if i were to mention it out of nowhere. for a less vague answer, this one although i consider it to be one of my worst posts

Emu - she's very good at replicating cartoon faces. i like this one because it raises a few questions about whether the L2Ds are still exaggerated or if she just looks like that and no one questions that she actually has a cartoon face. what if project sekai ends with them all becoming self-aware.

Nene - either the fact that she thinks the forest has good graphics or that she called rui's mom "auntie" when she was younger because i think it's cute.

Rui - i like a good reference and i appreciate that he sometimes references famous people and media.

Kanade - she's left handed. i also like that her family name was made up specifically to contrast with the rest of N25.

Mafuyu - either that it's shown one time that she can see ghosts and then it's never brought up or referenced again, or that the "mom's cooking" listed as her favorite food might refer to the bunny-shaped apple slices her mother would make for her when she was a kid. i also like the detail that her eyes being two-tone is because she inherited the eye colors of both her parents.

Ena - twitter user. also despite loving cheesecake, she doesn't like cheese. girl what the hell.

Mizuki - they started out editing by making AMVs for a magical girl anime they liked. Amia comes from the name of a character from that anime. also did you know they put ice cubes in noodles because of their sensitive tongue. ice cubes.

Another Burning of the Library AMV!

Okay, so, the amazing @wixenforever was talking with @that1notetaker about some stuff, and I saw it, and my brain went braining. So they were mentioning stuff with the Nott family tree, it burning/being cut away, so now I had this idea with the song Burn by Tom Walker and that made me see and picture things. Behold my continued obsession and bullshit lmfao. P.S. I'll try to keep it vague for spoilers haha

So, this is set during chapter 13 of the fic and the attack itself. And, I had this idea and Lee mentioned that it would work as a cool anime opening and such, so kinda have that as the frame I guess.

I watch as my world's going up in flames Through the black smoke I can see your face Embers they rain as the walls come down Where do we go when the lights go out?

So, this first section of the lyrics. Honestly, I like the idea that it starts with Magnus trapped by the attackers for the first line or two. Within the circle, being taunted, maybe with flashes of past enemies that he has and hasn't dealt with yet. He's a paranoid man, after all.

Then it goes to the next two sets of lyrics, and that's flashing to the Nott Family Tapestry (I like to think it's something more solid than the Black Family's, not necessarily stone but maybe carved into tablets and such? idk). And Magnus' picture/name gets melted/burned/chipped off by the Fiend Fire. We see scorch marks, remnants of names that flash whole before returning to ruin.

Again, going in pairs within sections, I like these first two as Theo coming down to see Magnus trapped. Seeing this man, who's so strong and powerful yet is helpless at this point. Honestly, kind of seeming resigned and welcoming of his fate to an extent. And there's flashes of the 'Dark Years' and all the hurt.

But Theo's strong, all those things have made him strong. So he squares his shoulders, he pulls out his wand. He tries to fight.

On my knees, my heart, it bleeds While you pour gasoline all over me (oh) Set me on fire 'cause you love the hurt Set me on fire just to watch me Burn Burn

And this is that classic anime fight scene in openings. It's Theo in the Tower, trying to fight, being beaten back as the fire spreads and is created. He's running, ducking and dodging, trying to get through. But as that second 'Burn' hits, it's him falling into blackness as the Fiend Fire snaps towards him, cutting to black for a moment. The camera flashes to the tapestry, Theo's name becoming singed and starting to burn as flames lick around it.

What would you do if you lost control? How would you feel if your dreams were sold? With both your hands tied and your taped up mouth You've gotta even feel how I'm feeling now

Honestly? Give me Graham and Magnus wiping out his family. And this is from Graham's perspective as he watches the modern events, his brother trapped and killed, his nephew fighting and losing. The house and Tower burning. And it's him, for those first two lines, talking to Magnus. Maybe too spiteful for the situation, but I think it'd be fitting. But then, the flames claim him too. And it flashes, again, to the tapestry where his name is fully snuffed out.

We can't really do it this way, but I think the 2nd and 4th lines as showing Ophelia. The mementoes that were left behind, the keepsakes and memories within Theo's room, Magnus', and anywhere else that had been left behind. All of them burning and turning ot cinders, ash blowing in the wind. Her name, face, memory is eaten by the flames.

So, these first two lines. Theo is floating, in a bubble, within blackness and no seeing or hearing anything. The ruins, reduced to the bedrock, are the only thing that seems to remain. But the rocks shift, the earth tensing and protecting the bubble that Theo is within, deep deep underground. And on top, the Prophet's report flutters by. It holds for a second, to see the headline and a picture of the flames, before it settles on a ruined rock.

Then the wind blows it just so, and underneath is Theo's name and portrait, singed and marked, changed and not quite whole anymore, but still there. Undeniably there still.

And then we go to the chorus again, and it's Theo waking up within the hideout. He doesn't remember much, doesn't know who attacked, just has information given to him and incomplete memories that seem to point in that direction. But his house is gone, his family in brimstone, and it hurts. He's recovering, slowly, far too slow for his liking.

And then, the final bits... I'm not quite sure where to go with it. I like the idea of it flashing through Theo with the Library in future events, him with the gang (both green and red), flashes of Dumbledore/Voldemort/Snape/The Attackers. Flashes of him training, learning, preparing.

Until the title card flashes with the final "Burn"'s that are screamed. Where it's the poster, with Theo and the Enemy as the centerpiece, with everyone else arrayed ever into the background. Harry and John are close by, Draco and Blaise, Dumbledore and Voldemort and over it all, watching the proceedings like the chessmasters observing their board that they are.

Literally watched all of S2 last night and I dont feel like doing individual reactions sooo

All of S1:E26 was me pointing at gay people on my screen and going "hey thats from the little dark age amv"

The orion pax arc is still literally so funny. Later episodes show that there was NO REASON to keep optimus/orion alive bc soundwave and THE FUCKING SHIP can also decode the locations of the mcguffins, megatron literally couldve won the war here and there what the hell. it took meg all of 0.5 seconds after he heard his former boytoy utter his name to try and find excuses to keep him around. Also making him call you "my lord"? I Know What You Are.

And apparently optimus/orion stayed on the nemesis for two months which is crazy to me bc megatron cannot improvise to save his fucking life what do you MEAN warlord ratchet??? YOU HAVE ULTRA MAGNUS IN YOUR FILES

It was funny tho bc meg heard ratchet say "I am your doctor of doom" and thought Hey thats pretty good and then make a callback to that when telling optimus/orion ratchet is evil incarnate

Extra hilarious to me that it partially ended bc starscream went to the nemesis to raid the fridge. [Megatron voice] this plane does nothing but ruin my life

The episodes where they send arcee and jin kazama to cybertron was pretty cool i did like the vibe it really felt alien ruins-like

You can tell the experience fucked optimus a little bc first episode after the season opening and peepaw is ready to consider warcrimes

Next was the "bumblebee gets his kidney stolen" arc and I have nothing to say other than it was funny when of course it ends in starscream getting his kidney stolen

Ok I do have some stuff to say actually, we trash on the cons a lot bc theyre disloyal assholes, but when a bot is told to stay at the base for valid reasons, they bitch and moan and end up disobeying anyway and never get punished severely by peepaw optimus bc them not following orders ALWAYS works in their favor

S2:E10-E11 is just megatron and the gang having the weirdest fucking day and it might be my fav eps. I think I just love watching the cons do shit. Megatron killed starscream four times, fought an army of bugs and then gave drugs to his ship

Knockout and megatron's banter is surprisingly always very entertaining. I think meg just like bouncing off of a little jester

The four relics episode are kinda whatever BUT they did gave us the one (1) soundwave focused episode and whaddayaknow he was extremely sexy and competent and it was funny to see him being treated like megatron's special boy&bird

Also bulkhead continue to have plot armor thicker than the apex armor like come on in every single one of his episodes he comes just this close to death

I fucking love S2:E20 bc 1) just throw some more mystical stuff at optimus like go full arthurian stories now, 2) lots of megatron action and 3) "drop the mountain on him"

I know its likely an animation lighting thing and optimus simply could not be based like that in the first place but conceptually it is absolutely hysterical to me that after slicing effortlessly a mountain in half, making megatron look like THIS

Optimus then look straight up at the camera and fucking winks at him

And then immediately after that, megatron going "decepticons, we are so fucked."

And THEN next episode is literally "MEGATRON YOU CRAZY BITCH" like come dreadwing lets desecrate a demigod's tomb

The rest of the omega keys episodes are also whatever but fucking hell if the whole Peter Cullen speaking in slow motion and Steve Blum mimicking that didnt get to me hard

The last starscream episode tho? Screamer cringe compilation while hes having the worst job interview of his life, of course i loved it

But again, hilarious that for the season finale megatron went "alright guys no more fucking around" and they basically won. That one moment where meg, screamer, KO all laughing maniacally together with soundwave just shaking in silent laughter with them was really funny. Only shocky is missing for the decepticon high command reunion

I really liked the moment where raf, miko and jin kazama were like "the autobots are ready to sacrifice their life for our planet, im ready to do the same for theirs" idk thats really brave and it struck me

Optimus chopping megatron's arm was really fucking cold

Episode Ten

Okay, so like. I mentioned this in my rewatch post for LOVE! S1E4, that the logic for this monster makes more sense than Igarao's, but then was thinking they both make sense, so here goes.

Igarao's monster was created for a TV show in-universe, with the goal of destroying the Earth. I don't think we got an explanation from Zundar for why they were turning everyone into kids/babies? There is the whole thing someone said with "kids are cute (good for ratings) and when the Battle Lovers turn back, they'll be naked (also good for ratings)." But since the goal with the swan monster was to make a world "where boys love boys, and no one will be able to make progeny," maybe the original goal if that one succeeded was to regress everyone's ages and raise these children to be evil? Or just obey Caerula Adamas?

On the other hand, Santa's turtle monster really was based off his negative emotions and insecurities. Furanui's whole thing is that he wants to rule the world with fear, he has no reason to care for anything like "ratings" since he's not doing it for a TV show. This student doesn't like being called old? People tend to be afraid to get older? Okay, show everyone that you have the power to turn them into senior citizens, and only turn them back once they see him as their king.

Anyway...

Still annoying that they de-transformed, just to re-transform with the full transformations.

You think we're going to have the "muddy kids forever" scene happen in the movie? Like will the BL Defense Club look back and be like "oh yeah, we remember you as kids" or will it be revealed that it was Death Amor going back in time disguised as them? Or will it be the future BL Defense Club going back in time to make sure the event happened, and that's why we don't see their faces? Because they're not high schoolers anymore and just wearing the uniforms?

I have a jokey headcanon that in all these ten years, Ata never had a bath because of this incident. (He's a stinky boy lol)

I love Martha's "oh my God!" and "shut up!" English moments.

Episode Twelve

So like. For a split second, the architecture in the Honyara Land city, not the castle, vaguely reminds me of Most City from Gekkan Mousou.

The 3D soldiers always give me Wizard of Oz vibes for some reason...

Didn't know Wao shares a seiyuu with the crab monster that attacked the twins! (Or maybe I did at some point.)

At some points, it seems like the throne room is in the robot's mouth, but other times it seems like a screen.

Also, I don't like how the mecha's mouth changes from open to closed and back to open whenever the camera changes. Like... The mouth opened, it's been established. Either keep it open, or have another clip to show that Wao closed it again and keep it closed from that point on.

Anyway, if I had a nickel for every time a Boueibu finale had an animal-themed mecha piloted by the (surprise) villain(s), I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

Did the staff change for the Super Happy and Turn? (Looked again, and I don't think it did. Thought I noticed extra details...)

Is there any pattern to the clips in the ending? I feel like the first two seasons had them in some sort of order if I'm remembering right, but these feel like they're going all over the place...

But anyway! That's it! The end of my rewatch! People are watching the movie right now, and I am screaming and crying that we can't see it until maybe March!

Should we do a rewatch of other Umatani anime in the meantime? At the same rate of 3 episodes per week, we'd probably be able to get through RobiHachi (makes sense to continue with that, since it's in the same universe as Boueibu) and most if not all of Fairy Ranmaru...

So I’m back into One Piece.

I initially got into it back when the anime was still new. I think around thirty episodes had aired when I started watching. And when I say I got into it, I mean I was obsessed with it. I not only watched the episodes, I rewatched them. Over and over. This was back when I still had dial up internet and it took several days to download a single episode. So it’s not like I had a ton of other new anime to watch.

In particular, I loved three ships especially (yes, I used to be a hardcore shipper): Luffy x Nami (my fave), Sanji x Nami, and Sanji x Luffy. Or all three together. I was really invested in these ships. I wrote fanfiction, ordered doujinshi from Japan, ran fan sites and even “communities” on Livejournal.

But I’ve always been a very open minded shipper. No matter what I shipped, I had no issues with other ships and even wrote fanfic for them. I wrote a fairly well received Zoro x Nami fic. I’ve never shipped them but a friend of mine at the time did and I thought it was cute enough. I also thought Luffy x Vivi was cute. I’ve never understood “shipping wars” because I always enjoyed almost all shipping content (unless it was something freaky involving adult x kid or something).

Anywho, I was buying the HK sets from eBay to avoid downloading it. For you younger anime fans, these were Hong Kong DVD sets with pretty packaging but questionable quality and even more questionable subtitles (the grammar was awful, the timing was sometimes off, and the names were often subbed wrong, including one memorable case where every single character’s name was subbed as “Chan” for a whole episode, so you’d get lines like “Chan! Go with Chan to look for Chan!”). They were a replacement for the VHS fansubs I loved so much once VHS fell out of use.

The first several sets were very well priced. They each had 30 episodes, and cost $25 including shipping from China. I bought them as they came out. But around the time they hit the Skypiea arc, they changed the sets. Suddenly you only got 18 episodes and the price rose to $30 a pop. I kept buying them for a while, but eventually stopped and decided to wait and see if better priced sets came out later, or at least let a few build up and buy them all at once to save on shipping.

But once I took a break from One Piece, a little after the Water 7 arc, I never went back to it. I got into other things, eventually got high speed internet and started streaming other new shows, and kept telling myself “I’ll catch up on One Piece someday”. Then all of a sudden it had over 1000 episodes and “catching up” felt very daunting. Not to mention the fact that it’s been around 20 years since I was watching it and now I’d need to start over just to refresh my memory.

For a time, I tucked One Piece away in my heart as something I once loved but would most likely never go back to. I still adored the characters and occasionally heard spoilers about major events (yes I know about that death) or stumbled upon AMV’s that had cool looking scenes past what I’d watched. But I have enough trouble trying to keep up with seasonal anime while having far less free time than I had 20 years ago (and I’m still trying to catch up on fucking Detective Conan - I’m in the 900’s now!).

But then things changed. The live action show on Netflix came out, and I binged it. I liked it a lot. Despite some nitpicks (mostly about Nami being so sullen and serious when she’s flirty and fun in the anime, because lady characters so often get shoved into the role of “smart one who puts a damper on all the fun the boys are having”), I think it overall did a great job of capturing the spirit of the story. It was fun and whimsical and didn’t screw the whole thing up by trying to be “realistic”.

Despite my enjoyment of the live action show and a renewed love of the characters, I still didn’t go back to the anime.

That all changed when my brother and I were at an extra residence that we use for storage, cleaning things up and sorting through the junk. He was digging stuff out of a closet when he found a boxed Nami figure. It was the bridal figure. I’d ordered it so many years ago and it arrived with the veil broken off. The seller sent me a replacement and said to keep the broken one. With nothing else to do with it, I tossed it in that closet.

My brother, who has never had even a shred of interest in any anime whatsoever, asked what was in the box. I said it was an anime figure and he asked which one. This was a very strange question from him. Usually when the word “anime” comes out of my mouth, it shuts down conversations. I said it was a One Piece character and he says “Oh? Who is it?” All the text on the box was in Japanese. Wondering why he cared, I said it was Nami. He immediately replied with, “This doesn’t look like Nami.”

I rolled my eyes and said “Yeah okay.” I figured he was just being silly or teasing me. What the hell would he know about Nami? Later while we were still cleaning, he found a bag of manga. I periodically take some over there when my shelves get too full. He asked what was in the bag and I said it was manga. Then he asks, “Do any of them have Luffy in them?”

I literally thought he googled One Piece characters just to mess with me. But then, a full fucking day later, it hit me: he pronounced Luffy’s name correctly. Most English speakers who saw the name written out would assume it rhymes with “fluffy”. Which meant my brother had to hear the name spoken aloud. When I went to his house a few days later, I told him to fess up.

Turns out, he watched the live action show and loved it. He even bought merch! He was gleefully showing off his Going Merry keychain, his magnet on the fridge in the shape of the Straw Hat Jolly Roger, and a phone case emblazoned with the One Piece logo. He even said he was getting into the anime. To say this was a surreal moment is an understatement. I’ve loved anime for over 30 years, and my brother has even teased me for liking it. He was the absolute last person I ever thought would take an interest in One Piece of all things.

And suddenly, the thought of him watching more of the anime than me, going past what I’ve seen, hit me like a slap to the face. I can’t let that happen! I would never live it down if he strolled in and started talking about stuff that happened way later in the series.

So I started it over. I’m currently at the point when they’re trying to get to Skypiea. I’m blazing through it, skipping anime-only filler episodes and all the opening/ending themes (even Run Run Run, which I adore so much). At this pace I’ll probably catch up next year. I forgot how damn watchable this show is, how hard it is to resist watching one more episode.

All this to say I’m back into One Piece in a big way. I might even write fanfic for some of the characters at some point (which would feel weird since I wrote OP fanfic back in the day). Just a heads up to my followers that you’re probably going to see some OP content on this blog from here on out.

peter's epic 2025 amv challenge

i'm gonna try to challenge myself to make at least one amv for every month of 2025!!! this is gonna be a general post where i will collect all the videos in one place and also under the cut you can read me blabbing for five hours about how i decided on this project and my expectations going into it and stuff like that

so this all started with the first video in this project, which should be going up shortly after this post. the short story is that i started working on this amv on new years eve 2023 and in the end it took me just over a year to finish it. it dragged on for a ridiculous amount of time because i just fell off the project and let it sit and collect dust for months, which i knew going in was a possibility and i still let it happen, i think this is something a lot of creatives can relate to.

to me having creative ideas feels like being in an unbelievably messy room with mountains of things strewn around all over the floor and table and shelves and chairs and my bed and that i really want to clean, and sometimes i do set myself on cleaning and even enjoy it, but most of the time i just end up bringing more stuff into the room and making it messier

the thing is that i dont believe that i can clean up this room, i dont even think that i can make a dent in it, but i would at least like to pick a few things up off the floor, and maybe a timed challenge could help with that

amvs are my favourite way of sharing the shows and music that i love so i would hate it if i stopped making them, i have mountains of ideas that i'm sitting on and for what!! this isnt a matter of skill, i dont know a lot about cool editing but i do believe that i have the skill to make videos that i myself would be satisfied with and that's really what i'm trying to achieve whenever i make a video anyway. so rather this is a matter of willpower. i genuinely do not know if i have enough willpower to get through this challenge, but i want to try and see how it goes

i dont remember what exactly sparked the idea for this challenge but i remember it was sometime in november and i was working and randomly got the idea and couldn't stop thinking about it and planning all through my shift. at that point i hadnt worked on that first amv since like march or april? and the idea of this challenge was enough to finally inspire me to get back to it, i worked on it little by little over the next month and a half, and i finally managed to reach the finish line

there's some other more esoteric reasons ive got in my head for trying a project like this. for example, my initial reaction to my own idea was that a month is too little time!! but the truth is the months go along so fast because i spend too much time zoning out and worrying about things i can't control. i want to try doing something challenging with my time, i want to slow down, i want a month to feel like a lot of time again, if that makes sense

naturally december will be the last month of this challenge. december is also my birth month, i feel like the older you get the less meaningful birthdays feel, so this is also my attempt at making my birthday have more meaning and see if i can get myself to grow and improve in something over the period of one year

oh another thing, the problem isnt just in MAKING the video. a lot of my ideas are for shows that i havent seen in a while, so i would have to rewatch them to be able to make an amv, or for shows i havent seen at all (more in a "this song has the same vibe as this show i keep seeing clips of" kinda way), so i would actually have to go and finally watch those to see if i want to make an amv for them. 

but on the other hand, i also have a lot of amv ideas for movies, which would be easier to make as there's less material to wade through, and actually since i started planning for this i kind of keep putting the movie ideas in the front line agdnfl. maybe this project will just end up being majorly movie amvs but we’ll see

also im not sure how a planned challenge like this will affect my spontaneous video making, i wanna say i can totally still make other videos unrelated to the challenge if inspiration strikes me and its not like im only gonna make 12 videos in the whole year, but idk if i know myself that well so we’ll have to see together how i act going forward LMAO

i was also tossing around the idea of making this a themed challenge, and i even had a nice idea of what the theme would be. i checked my ideas list and it was incredibly convenient that i had EXACTLY 12 concrete video ideas for this particular theme i had in mind (and then some more to spare which were just vague ideas), but at the end of the day i think making myself stick to a single theme for a whole year would be too restricting, and also i kept getting excited over ideas that didnt fit the theme anyway gsdhg

one thing that i do definitely know about myself is that at some point during these 12 months i will INEVITABLY get discouraged and it might happen as soon as the posting of this first video. so what if i dont make it? what if i miss a month? or run out of steam and just stop the challenge all together? well lets quote the 2011 tintin movie for a sec stay with me here

The fact that we don't get to see more of him. TBF, he died well before the start of Naruto, so we only see him through memories (and that one weird Infinite Tsukuyomi filler story, but I digress.) I want to see how he'd interact with MORE canon characters, I want to see MORE of the original Akatsuki, and I want to know MORE about the Hidden Rain Village.

I am very neutral on him, so my apologies for some lame-ass answers. Also, i felt like I spent a lot of time writing my opinions on Yahiko.

Favourite thing about them?

His abilities were neat, as one of the few who could use Wood Style. i also respect how he tried his best to keep Team 7 in check and (later on) help rebuild the Hidden Leaf after Pain destroyed it.

Least favourite thing about them?

The fact that he was sidelined for most of the War Arc, serving little use outside of buffing up Zetsus. IDK, that was kind of disappointing.

Oh, I also feel weird about the fact that he's supposed to watch Orochimaru in Boruto. Like, if we treat the anime backstory as canon, dude should be traumatized by Orochimaru.

Favourite line?

That one where he threatens to use "draconic measures" on Team 7 when they keep arguing and fighting each other, I guess.

Can I be honest. Can I be brutally honest.

I think the only reason it's as popular as it is because of Mappa's animation. I think the only reason most people like it is because Mappa's animation makes for really good amvs ("they're called edits now grandma" shut the fuck up you cannot escape the cringe) and you have to actually watch the anime in order to get the good clips.

I don't particularly adore Demon Slayer, but even I can see that there's effort being put in outside of just visual splendor and emotional clips. There's a setup wayyyy in the beginning, and it has a big payoff that says something about the person it happens to. There's more thought being put into it than "what will hurt the audience the most/get a reaction I want online".

TURBOOOOOOOO oh man this one is so good. "be a part of the legacy" fucks me up NOW. OF FUCKING COURSE. KILLS SOMEONE. like fuuuuuuuck it's so real. i hated this season so bad when i watched it but man aiger really did become part of the legacy. ALSO finally a really interesting music video to go along with it!!!! the first two seasons had Fine animations to go with the music but mannnnn they really started getting into it with turbo. it adds so much intrigue to these characters they're never going to focus on. i'm still bitter about it LOL. but the song and music video on it's own is really really good.

RISE!!!!!!!!!! this one is definitely Good. it's super catchy but my favorite favorite FAVORITE part is the musicality they get with the four mains going RISE! all looking at the camera. i had that picture of amane holding up his glasses and smiling from that shot as my discord icon for aaaaaaages despite barely watching that season. i LOVE that part i CANNOT stop myself from following their movement it's so awesome. the music video for this one is still Good for suresies there's lots of cool amv shots. i think my favorite is aiger launching his bey in front of the full moon and then grinning. very fun. but it doesn't feel as Cohesive of a music video i would say as turbo's. but a VERY fun song i LOVE the way this guy scream sings it's so. hype. like fuck yes keep fighting for the whole world now we're the champions beyblade burst rise. so true bestie. love it.

SEASON 5 ENG

oh my god surge. what a different sound for this one!!!! i remember being super shocked when i first heard it but it's really good. never a miss with these guys i tell ya. VERY catchy. i think there's a little more musicality with the animation in the short version but oh my goddddddddd. this music video. is so. fucking. cute. and is that because there's more of the old characters in this season, well. who's to say. but the answer is totally yes. the fucking scene where it's hikaru hyuga and valt putting their fists together and they all pose and smile and we get to valt and he's all happy but then the camera shifts to him with his back to shu and valt suddenly looks sad and shu is sad and he looks off and gets surrounded by fire and he reaches his hand out and it gets swallowed by purple and black void referencing lain like AYUYHYUGHY!!!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!! THE CINEMATOGRAPHY!!!!!! do not even fucking get me started on the final tournament pairs getting shown off too like uuyyyuyhghyhghh i am not immune to seeing 1 frame of my sillygoofy and losing my mind. and look at how many sillygoofies there are. this season was when they started going HARD with the squish factor too so they all looks so cutesie ootsie wootsie tootsie it KILLS ME. UYGHG. but anyway the fucking song. it's good i love the loud bass in the back and how like chill this intro is. very different from the incredibly loud and energetic intro from the previous season. VERY FUN.

SEASON 6 ENG

this one is just okay. i think the short version is better than the full version which is pretty unfortunate cos the full one gets more of the music video. the full song just like starts and stops in weird places? like especially being more used to the short version you expect the energy to continue picking up but then it just drops you off and you're like what. ok. and then it's back up again immediately. disorienting. the music video for this one is Fine. some real cute animations of free lui valt and shu<3 but other than that it's nothing terribly noteworthy.

SEASON 7 ENG

see now this one is interesting. the beginning of the full song kinda reminds me of the type if emo nonsense i'd listen to while nightcored. fun stuff. looking at it from that lense the song is pretty fun!! this music video is probably the lamest we've had since like s1 and 2 though like there aren't many purposefully Cinematic shots that aren't just. launch stances from the show. kind of a bummer. seeing xcalius did make me a heem heem though ayouygh i am not immune. i shrimply am not. i do quite like the scene of everybody's eyes opening where it's all grayed out aside from their eye color. i do remember losing my fucking MIND when xander and ken showed up. very fun stuff. not a bad song. the musicality could definitely use some work though.

SEASON 1 JP

awwaaayiyhhh now admittedly i don't really have the same level of nostalgia for most of the japanese intros cos i'm a Dub Watcher but awayugh. auuyughg. the animation in this one is so much cuter. honestly i kind of forgot zac actually used to be important i choked when he showed up like WOAH!!!! I KNOW THIS GUY!!!!!! man i miss him. but anyway the song is fine

SEASON 2 JP

BURST BURST BURST BURST BURST FINISH!!!!!!!! BURST BURST BURST BEYBLADE!!!!!!!!!!!!! this one fucking rules. never a miss repeating burst and beyblade over and over again. you gotta love it. also in the animation i love when they have all the characters from the tournament line up and the heights are so fucked. i will never forget this one piece of fanart i saw where they had drawn joshua (NOT MY JOTCHIA I DON'T CLAIM THIS ONE) sisco ren wu and free all standing normal and then lui was standing on a box and xander was crouching down so they could all be vaguely the same height. love that shit. i miss the supreme four tails i miss them a lot.

SEASON 3 JP

OKAY NOW THIS ONE IS UP THERE WITH MY FAVORITES. like purely as a Song to Listen To this one is my favorite. it's SOOOOOOOOO nice on the ears i absolutely love how this guy sings it. it's similar to the english rise intro i would say with how ENERGETIC it is and the SCREAM singing like god this guy just goes for it you can HEAR and you can FEEL the strain in his vocal chords ugh i love it. i think the musicality of the music video is executed a little better in the english version? but the visuals are just so pretty to look at it doesn't even matter. INCREDIBLE intro. sucks about the season it's for. LOL.

SEASON 4 JP

now THIS music video has MUSICALITY. UYGH. IT'S AWESOME. i LOVE the little dance the main team does and they sing along the words. ugh. very cute. the song itself is very cute and fun and upbeat and i love that. it's quite bouncy i would say. two different interpretations of dante's energy i guess LOL english pairs him with such an aggressive and loud song but this one is jovial and fun and yeah BOUNCY. very fun.

SEASON 5 JP

oh man!!!! i think these are probably the two that are most different from each other? i still really like the way this song goes though it's very fun!!! it sounds like they got two different singers too alluding to hikaru and hyuga which is a very cute touch. there's a few animations we get here that we don't see in english INCLUDING ONE OF WAKIYA!!!!!!! FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it's him showing off his new coat with the sun behind him. uygh. fucked up. also the freeze frame at the end is different here and there is a very cute scene of lain and shu holding their beys together A HEEM FUCKING HEEM. interestingly there's also some animations in english that aren't in this one?! maybe they're from one of the outros. who knows. but anyway song is cute

SEASON 6 JP

yet again as a Song to Listen To this is one of my favorites. i love the dip in vocals for the go burst go burst 321 go shoot it's so fun. the musicality of the video is better here than the english one i would say. more animations too. why. the fuh fuh fuck. does the english version keep cutting wakiya out of the intros. blasphemous i tell you. LET HIM IN!!!!!!!! HE'S SO CUTE HERE WITH HIS STUPID FUCKING CAPE!!!!!!!! also there's a scene of bashara walking passed ranzo spinning bell around in the air by his arms and bashara is wearing his dumb little villain green suit and he moves to hang out with rashad and iliya like a fucking dweeb. love it. they took so many fucking amv shots out of the english version it's crazy.

Another episode of longsuffering older sibling having to deal with annoying younger siblings messing up all their shit. These writers must be completely traumatised by the experience of having younger siblings. But at least these ones aren't like Polly and actually express some remorse for destroying shit. Apparently making sure that your younger siblings don't steal your extremely dangerous magic book to do some sort of plastic surgery on themselves is your responsibility as an older sister. That makes sense . But it's NOT your responsibility to entertain them to keep them from idiotic behaviour. Imo. But I guess that just goes to show I'm a younger sibling.

The funny thing is that I would be Marcy in this scenario but somehow she's my least favourite. She's alright. But she's not getting treated right by the narrative
