in terms of the encanto council discussion heres my headcanon on how mirabel fits into all this!
we know from the movie she loves helping out and whilst her primary motivation was to prove herself she also just really values her community and loves helping!
Post movie: i feel during the rebuild alma and mirabel had a lot of conversations, we see how alma does trust her in the rebuild scenes and seems to value her opinion! after the rebuild i feel with Madrigals not wanting to be as heavily relied on there’s a change in how the encanto council is! more members! some people not wanting to be there anymore trying to integrate the voices of all generations and not just one! Mirabels still a young teen so I don’t think she’s given any important position I feel she more just offers to help alma from time to time! does little deliveries is asking how the community feels (especially her generation)! i feel like Alma at times might not know how to deal with certain conflicts and would want a fresh perspective! she might ask mirabel for bits of advice on minor issues to try see another way! mirabel is also just very open minded! mirabel of course is happy to help and she’s not overwhelmed by anything as she only helps from time to time still has time to herself to focus on her hobbies, friends and school!
young adult: ok so as a young adult I feel naturally mirabel wants a bit more agency! gonna assume the triplets are in the leadership position at the moment and the council has probably had some adjustments! I feel gradually mirabel is asked more for her opinions maybe even sent out to discuss with the townspeople themselves! i also feel that during this time she would become a council member and be a representative for younger people of the encanto!
adult: as an adult I feel like mirabel is highly valued in the community! they’ve seen how she’s learned a lot and grown over time and feel she’s a great addition to the council! as she’s probably a lot older now I feel the triplets want to step down from leadership position and mirabel would most likely offer to take up that position as she feels prepared now! like Alma she would have her own council but change it around! new ideas new adjustments I feel it’s likely she would want someone younger on the council too so she can get the voices of all generations! I feel she’s very involved in the community and very open minded! She’s willing to listen and wants to help!
I’ve been thinking about this for months lmao and rewatching the movie just fueled it more😭

The "Real" Story of Encanto
I've been thinking about magical realism and magic as metaphor. I've also been thinking about Life of Pi and the idea that we get to choose the stories we tell and telling the version of the story that's better, regardless of whether or not it's true. As I ponder these ideas, I can't stop dwelling on the "real" story of Encanto. The idea that Encanto is Mirabel's story, but it's the one she wants to tell instead of strictly adhering to the facts. Obviously Mirabel is fictional in the first place, but I wanted to outline what might have "really" happened to the Madrigal family.
So first off, Abuela Alma's story is largely free of magic or anything unrealistic, so it can be taken at face value until the end. Young Alma falls in love with Pedro, they get married, and have triplets. While the triplets are still babes in arm, men on horseback attack their village and the Madrigal family flees along with many others from their village. As they're running some of the attackers catch up. Pedro turns back to stop them and... something happens. A miracle or a coincidence, something like an earthquake or a rockslide kills Pedro and their pursuers.
Now the story turns more towards the magic. Did the villagers just happen to find a magical house in the middle of the jungle and gift it to Alma? A more grounded explanation of Casita is that the villagers, having seen Pedro turn back to defend them all, could hardly let his widow and mother of three infants fend for herself. The villagers come together and prioritize building her house first, and in a place of honor.
Then come the gifts. I think Alma, being a person of conscious Alma could let herself live on the graces of others. She had to give back to the village for their kindness to her, so she comes up with a scheme. When the triplets are old enough she gives them a "gift" and a job to serve the community. Julieta was always the level headed one. Alma teaches her cooking and nursing skills tells her she is gifted with healing food. Bruno was always observant, he is gifted with foresight. He's supposed to help the village predict when bad things are going to happen. Pepa was always a wild one with her head in the clouds. Does her mood affect the weather? Or does the weather affect her mood. Pepa learns to read the skies and predict oncoming storms; it just happens to make her very grumpy when she sees a storm on the horizon.
Of course as the triplets grow up they know that their "gifts" aren't magic, but they still dutifully perform their duties to serve the village and "earn the miracle" (of the villagers helping out the widow of their literal savior). Of course the more the Madrigal family serves the village, the more the villagers feel they owe back to the Madrigal family, and the cycle continues. Julieta and Pepa have children, and are given gifts of their own. Bruno, being the observant man that he is, helps Abuela in choosing useful gifts and jobs for the grandchildren.
By the time Isabela comes of age and is ready to receive her gift there are 3 Madrigal babies and not a boy in sight. It therefore will become Isabela's responsibility as the eldest granddaughter to bring a husband into the family. She's always enjoyed playing in the garden, so her interests there are channeled towards making lovely flowers and just being an all around perfect princess ready to be married. This is mostly fine by little Isa, she's not exactly upset at being pampered and doted over.
Dolores comes next, and with the issue of having a marriable granddaughter settled not as much is expected of her. She is quiet and always, always listening. She is tasked with helping Bruno by listening in the village for problems anyone might be having so that the family can swoop in to help.
By the time Luisa comes of age it's increasingly obvious that having no boys is not exactly ideal for their ability to serve the village, so Luisa becomes "the strong one." She's told she's supernaturally strong and she can help out the village by helping carry heavy things. And so little Luisa sets out doing just that.
By the time Camilo comes of age Bruno notices that the older grandchildren are starting to resent their "gifts" and their jobs. Isabela knows she's not magically making flowers grow, and she's a bit spoiled to boot. He thinks about his and his sisters own childhoods working hard to serve the village, and kinda doesn't want to keep doing this to the grandchildren. Camilo's "gift" is essentially doing funny impersonations. His job is making people laugh. That can't really turn into a burden, can it?
Then comes Mirabel. Bruno decides enough is enough. When Abuela tells him to choose Mirabel's gift he confronts her for pushing her grandchildren to work so hard. Mirabel's gift should have been her embroidery, but Bruno did not want to see little Mirabel slaving away over that when she should be having fun like all the rest of the kids in the now very happy and healthy little village. This turns into a blow-up argument that ultimately results in Bruno storming off in anger. In Abuela's own anger she decides that fine, if Mirabel doesn't get a gift and a job, she doesn't get a room. She'll stay in the nursery, never properly "coming of age". This is aimed at Bruno, but of course Mirabel has no idea what's going on.
And that catches us up to the present day, the day of Antonio's coming of age celebration. The thing is, between Mirabel's disastrous coming of age party and the present, Abuela never had a way to take back what she did to Mirabel. Everyone is insanely stressed because they know how ridiculous it is that Mirabel is still staying in the nursery while Antonio is going to get a room, probably the room that supposed to be Mirabel's. There's a resentment that Mirabel was never given a "job" while everyone else is working their butts off performing their own "gifted" duties, but also a sense of pity at how hard Mirabel is working while being treated like a literal baby. Why does Alma snap at Mirabel's attempts to help? Because she's embarrassed that she denied Mirabel's entire coming of age ceremony in her anger at Bruno. Without Bruno's help, Antonio's gift is, 'I don't know he's always liked animals, right?' and his job is, 'we'll figure it out later.'
Anyway, what is Mirabel seeing in all this? First, Antonio's coming of age celebration goes off without a hitch, so she really did get personally snubbed. Also, everybody is walking on egg shells around her because of... well, everything... So she starts investigating. She talks to Dolores who's all "don't ask me, go talk to Luisa!" What's Luisa going to say? She can't exactly trauma dump her resentment to Mirabel about having to do all the heavy lifting while Mirabel doesn't get a job at all, while also feeling guilty that Antonio just moved out of the nursery into the room that was supposed to be Mirabel's. So she does her best to couch it better. She's struggling with always needing to be the strong one. She wants a break! When Mirabel hugs her, well just like in the movie all the stress just evaporates. How could she be resentful of her precious little sister. It's not like Mirabel is the one pressuring her to be strong. Luisa tells Mirabel to go to Bruno's old room for answers about what's going on.
So, what's really in Bruno's room? Well, probably not a shattered green glass image of Mirabel destroying the house. More likely it's burnt scraps of Bruno's notes. Bruno wrote down his observations and predictions. After their blow-up fight on Mirabel's birthday, Abuela throws most of his notes in the fire. Mirabel gathers up scraps and cryptically pieces together the idea that she's going to destroy the family? That doesn't make sense; It's time to find Bruno!
Why don't we talk about Bruno anyway? Well, the truth is Bruno wasn't just hiding away in the walls. Many of the villagers knew he was still around, but being reasonable people they didn't want Abuela Alma to find out. And she will find out because... well has anyone seen Dolores recently? We don't talk about Bruno because nobody wants to have Alma breathing down their necks about what they know, because they let something slip while Alma's little spy was hanging around.
Anyway, back to Mirabel. Mirabel finds Bruno, who is in a pretty sorry state. She demands him to explain wtf he meant by the scraps of notes she found. Also, he has to help her fix things. It's not easy to explain, but Bruno did happen to see how Mirabel helped Luisa, so he has an idea. He doesn't show her a new prophecy, he shows her Isabela moping around the garden. He points out how unhappy Isabela is, and if Mirabel wants to fix things, she can start by going and giving Isabela a hug. WHAT!?
Ok, Mirabel has to give Isabela a hug, no problemo. Only at the sight of Mirabel Isabela is pissed, and she does not show the same restraint as Luisa. Mirabel did just ruin Mariano's perfect proposal to her. She lays out all of her grievances and aims them directly at Mirabel. Mirabel is determined to turn things around though. She asks why Isabela puts up with all of that. Why does Isabela have to be the perfect little princess? Why does Isabela have to marry Mariano? Yeah... That's a bit embarrassing for Isabela. She realizes it's not really Mirabel that she's mad at, it's everything else. So what next? They hug. They roll around in the dirt and have fun, and when Abuela gets back to the house with Mariano in tow, Isabela, covered head to toe in mud tells Mariano she never liked his stupid face and that he can take his stupid poetry and shove it up his ass.
Everyone is shocked to say the least. Abuela absolutely loses it. She sees Mirabel comparably mud-covered to Isabela and pieces together what happened. She lays into Isabela who is cowed, but saves some especially choice words for Mirabel. Just as she's hitting the crescendo of her tirade, disaster strikes. Another rockslide happens destroying Casita. In the confusion Mirabel runs away. When the dust settles and they're making sure everyone is accounted for they realize Mirabel is nowhere to be found. An absolute dread washes over Abuela, fearing the worst as she recalls what could have very well been her last words to her granddaughter.
Abuela's fear is broken when someone mention that they thought they saw Mirabel slipping way towards the river after the house collapsed. Abuela hurries off to find her. With great relief Abuela finds Mirabel and apologizes. She lays it all out there. Not just the story of how Pedro saved everyone in the village, but also of the guilt at receiving the villager's kindness. She finishes her story by apologizing about Mirabel's coming of age party all those years ago. She talks about Bruno for the first time in a very long time, and wishes that she could apologize to him too. With one of her signature heart melting hugs, Mirabel tells her she can. Bruno is still hanging around looking after everyone from afar.
Abuela is shocked to say the least. She sends Mirabel off to re-assure the rest of the family that she is safe and sets out to track down Bruno and give a long overdue apology. Everyone is happy to see Mirabel and later Bruno. Abuela apologizes to everyone about the whole gifts thing. Mirabel gives a nice pep talk and gets everyone moving on what they're supposed to do about the destroyed house. Enough with the gifts! Everyone can help out as best as they are able. And of course the villagers show up to help too. The Madrigals are an important part of the community. They never resented helping Alma out, and while the Madrigal's assistance throughout the years was always appreciated, it was never expected. It's just what good neighbors do for each other!
When the house is rebuilt and Mirabel is given the honor of opening the door to their new "miracle". A miracle founded on trust and love as a family, not the burdens of perceived debt and traumas of the past.

We Don't Talk About Alma❓❗
I hope no one's done this. Like I'm going insane with this idea. I'm serious.
Basically, after Mirabel's ceremony, after everyone had left and the family had gone to bed, she doesn't immediately go to Bruno for a vision. She kind sits in the candle room and looks at the candle. And what does she figure? It's her fault Mirabel didn't get a gift.
Now you might think she thought it was because she out pressure on the family, but that's not it. She doesn't even think about it. The candle flickered in her hands. So her logic is she must not be fit to be the candle her, she did something wrong. So when she's sure everyone's asleep, she leaves the candle in the nursery, telling a sleepy Mirabel to watch over it, and leaves. How she ends up in the walls I'm not sure. Casita probably showed her and she saw it as a chance to be with her family but not hurting the magic, so she stays in there.
Mirabel is out in charge of the candle. It was left in the nursery. Mirabel didn't really hear Alma that night, as Alma was telling her a lot of stuff, but she did hear the last part. And then that was the last anyone say of her. Literally, Mirabel was the last to see her, and then was gone. The next, Mirabel's door reappeared; she was holding the candle. This was because Alma, technically speaking, stepped down from being the candle holder, so it went to the next one in line; which was Mirabel. Of course the family was ecstatic, and another party was being planned. They hadn't even actually realized Alma was gone. Mirabel didn't reveal what she heard last night yet and everyone in the family kind of just assumed Alma knew and was around. Even though...no one...saw her???
Anyway, it isn't until townspeople start coming to Casita that someone asks "Where's Alma?". That prompted the family to search for her, on the DL of course. Mostly the adults, the kids were having too much fun playing in Mirabel's new room. When they couldn't find her, they didn't quite announce it. Once the party was over and the kids were asleep, they went looking for her all throughout Casita more throughly. Bruno was the one who finally noticed that Alma's door had gone dark. And when they went in, it was like no one had been in it for years. It was dark, dusty and there was scorch marks in certain places. The candle room looked abandoned, and the actual candle had been placed in Mirabel's room.
Kids found out later on and Mirabel's told everyone what Alma said to her the night of her birthday. Dolores couldn't even find Dolores; she said she could hear something but she wasn't entirely sure if it was her or not. Morale was made candleholder, but didn't step up to the role as leader until she was about 10. Courtesy of her parents.
Though, Antonio, afyer learning about gifts and what not, had a, very rational actually, fear that Mirabel would just disappear like Alma did. Other family sort of have a fear of that as well. Mirabel assures the family, and more importantly Antonio, that she wouldn't of course.
Also Alma's line the The Family Madrigal is changed.
"My Abuela Alma-"
"We Don't Talk About Alma!"
"...One day they she saw the candle flicker, and then she suddenly disappeared."
The thing is, it was implemented not because they didn't like her, or because she was weird. It was because it made the triplets sad to talk about her. Pressured or not, that was still their mother, and they loved her, so when she just uped and disappeared, it was kind of jarring to them. So, Agustín and Félix told the kids not to talk about Abuela near them, and then the town kind of picked up on it. Kind of an unspoken rule. Antonio has no idea who she is, and Luisa, Camilo and Mirabel barely remember her. They were too young.
No one knows why she left. Dolores can’t properly hear her, and Bruno’s visions never make sense.

WOAH ME SENDING AN ASK WHAT UH…Anyway for some stupid reason I didn’t see you tag me in the dragonoid post until a week later I AM SO SORRY???
Erm 🤓☝️ I would love to help with it, I love world building so much you don’t understand. And this au has a really cool start, any more lore or do you need like. Prompts or whatever 🌚

Girl I mostly need help with lore (and maybe design ideas, I don't mind prompts eigther) but here's some other stuff I got so far
For now, we'll call baby dragonoid's "Hatchlings". They stay with the name "hatchling" until they are about the equivalent of 10 years old.
I can't think of a dragon equivalent title to tween or teen so if you come up with anything. Edit (idea given to me by evostar): Tweens/teens are called Dweeps!
Diet mostly consists of fish (like regular dragons). I think fruit, other types of meat, and vegetables too?? I'm not sure.
Elders that are the equivalent of 40-50 years of age guard the edges in case any humans stumble upon the Encanto.
Also, dragonoid's that are Alma's age are deathly afraid of the outside world. So, the rule of never going beyond the barrier is HEAVILY MANDATORY.
DO NOT TOUCH THE EGGS!!! If you aren't a relative or close family friend, you will get a limb torn off.
Hatchlings are very curious and hardheaded; they only learn after the accident to not do it again (hopefully). Same for tweens and teens, but not to an extreme extent. Hatchlings also have a lot of energy.
Nests/Homes are always adorned with jewelry and anything shiny.
No shoes. Their feet are as stuff as leather so there's no need to wear them.
Teeth are as sharp as knives, it's a miracle tongues aren't bitten by accident on the daily.
shops, vendors, and "restaurants" do exist in Encanto it just looks different a little different.
The fashion is well...raggy per say?
Examples:
They can make their clothes look close to human standards, but they simply don't want to conform to that for petty reasons. And I just love this kind of fashion, so I wanted to put it in here.
Odd patterns, random jewelry, embroidery, patches, etc. Plus, certain patches or scraps of fabric are passed down from generation to generation.
Madrigals!
I've decided, they do have gifts!
Alma wears a headpiece jewelry on her head that belonged to Pedro. She's rarely, if ever, seen with it off. Example:
Also, male dragonoid's where whatever they want. Earrings, necklaces, rings, etc.
Ceremonies still exist, but like in beach town au, the very fact that you are alive is very important. Especially to a dragonoid seeing as they were wiped out very easily.
All of them are close in this au, no pressure. Isabela is the very definition of wild and so are the other grandkids.
As hatchlings (baby - 4), they bit everything in sight for teething reasons. Even their parents but it doesn't hurt at all. But to a human, the pain would be like if a piranha latched onto you.
Mirabel doesn't have a gift (I'm sorry Miraboo butcha don't), and her wings are smaller than the others. So, she mostly has to walk, crawl, climb, and run wherever she needs to go.
Which isn't an issue really, her body is already equipped with the biology to do all four, but it does get tedious.
Pepa doesn't breathe fire, she blasts lightning out of her instead. Think toothless.
Also, I'm not sure what dragon type they should be related too. Each dragonoid is related to some type of dragon but I can't decide theirs'. (But I think the triplets should be a mix between Alma and Pedro, the yellow kids should be a mix of Pepa and Felix, same for the blue couple and their kids.)
One more thing, Dragonoids' are taller than the average humans but much smaller than original dragons (BUT it depends on the type of dragon). I hope that makes since.
I'll have to look up the different types of dragons from HTTYD for some more info.
Also, @evostar
srry, forgot to tag you @thefourchimes

Hii! I just started reading ur stuff and love it!❤️❤️
So if u dont mind can u do one where antonio wanders off with his animals and its up to mirabel and the rest of the family to find him?
Thanks!! Keep it up love these😍😍❤️
Hi, thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot! I'm sorry this took so long...I've had some writer's block but hopefully it's over now. Hope you like this!
Dinnertime in the Madrigal family tended to be a chaotic affair. With the various family members busy helping around town or running errands all day, it was a wonder they could eat together at all. But Alma insisted, and Julieta agreed, that they should try to eat together as a family. So, one way or another, they’d find their way back to their casita by dinnertime.
Usually, this involved some level of hunting people down. The Madrigals would rarely all be congregated at home by the time dinner rolled around, as their gifts and abilities were useful around town. Demand for them to use their gifts for others’ benefit had definitely lessened since they got their gifts back; the townspeople had learned how to take care of many things independently in the intervening months and were trying to keep it that way. But there were always new parents who needed rest and appreciated Camilo’s babysitting services for a stint. Or farmers needing some intervention when inclement weather struck. Or people with grave injuries in need of healing (Julieta and Isabela had taken it upon themselves to teach people some more basic healing techniques using plants and herbs after realizing just how burned out the two of them were). Or those stubborn donkeys that just kept getting out…
By the time Julieta announced dinner was ready, the kitchen was usually abuzz with inquiries as to people’s whereabouts and requests to get them back home, all overlapping in glorious cacophony.
“Dolores, go find your brother.”
“Where is he, mamá?”
“I’m not sure…last I heard he was helping señor Gonzalez who threw out his back fix his roof.”
“Wait, why wouldn’t Luisa help?”
“I think she was dealing with some other crisis at the time- where is Luisa anyway?”
“I’m right here, tía, what’s going on?”
“We’re looking for Camilo.”
“Well you found him!”
“Ay, Milo, that isn’t funny! You’re gonna give your poor mamá a heart attack!”
“Camilo, stop changing into your cousins.”
“Sorry, papá…”
“We still don’t know where Luisa is.”
“I’m right here, tía.”
“That’s not funny, Camilo.”
“I’m over here, mamá.”
“Ayyyy, who else is still missing?”
“Well, Antonio was helping me with the donkeys, is he back yet?”
“Antonio!”
Everyone stopped running abruptly, bumping into each other. Camilo winced, rubbing his forehead which had unfortunately hit Luisa’s side in the mayhem. Isabela picked up the shards of the plate she broke after colliding with Dolores. The latter mumbled an awkward apology, cradling her own elbow gingerly. Mirabel was off to the side, assessing the damage. Thankfully, the food had been spared, but otherwise the kitchen looked like a tornado had passed through it.
Judging by Pepa’s erratic breathing, this wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. She leaned against the counter, gripping it so tightly her knuckles turned white, and squeezed her eyes shut. A breeze batted around the loose tendrils of her hair as she tried desperately to calm herself.
“Antonio was helping you with the donkeys?” She repeated weakly, fanning her face with her hand.
Luisa nervously shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “Yeah. It was his idea actually. He figured it would be easier to corral the donkeys if he talked to them rather than having me carry them around town.” She stretched her arm carefully, groaning after a point. “I ran into him after finishing up moving the bridge, again, and he could see my shoulder was hurting me, so he volunteered to take care of the donkeys himself.”
Julieta let out a soft gasp, covering her open mouth with her hand. “You got hurt, Lu? Why didn’t you say anything, querida?” Turning around, she rummaged around the basket by the door and fished out a buñuelo. “Here.” She held it out towards her daughter.
Luisa shrugged, accepting the proffered food and taking a bite. She gave her arm another tentative stretch, sighing in relief when she could actually stretch it all the way. “Thanks, mamá. I guess I didn’t think it was that bad? I figured I’d just take some of your food later, like I always do,” she added as an afterthought.
“Like you always-“ Julieta started incredulously, but was interrupted by Pepa holding up her hand.
“Luisa, I’m sorry you got hurt, and you shouldn’t be trying to hide it, but right now my son is missing.” She clapped her hands to emphasize her point. “Can we continue this conversation after we’ve found him?”
Julieta nodded her acquiescence, but her lips pressed together in a thin line. “We’ll talk about this later, Luisa,” she said, wrapping an arm around her waist. “Let’s go find Antonio.”
Haphazardly, the Madrigals made their way outside and followed Luisa as she led them through town.
“Okay, last I saw him was by señor Martinez’s house, but he was heading towards the runaway donkeys, which were by the church,” Luisa narrated to herself, turning decisively to the right.
“It makes a lot more sense for Antonio to deal with them, seeing as he can just talk to them,” Mirabel commented. “Why did anyone even think it was a good idea to make you haul them around on your back when Antonio could just convince them to go home?”
“Because they are tontos who don’t think, just like they can’t fix that stupid gate once and for all so the donkeys stop getting out in the first place,” Pepa muttered under her breath darkly, nostrils flaring as she continued marching under her heavy cloud.
“Ay, Pepa, don’t speak like that,” Alma scolded halfheartedly. “We should be kind to our neighbors.”
“They can start by being kind and not sending my children on fool’s errands. Then I’ll reconsider striking their yards with a lightning bolt. Idiotas…” Pepa kept up a steady stream of curses and insults under her breath, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.
“She has a point, mamá.” Julieta placed her hand on Alma’s shoulder gently. “That gate has been loose for ages and no one has bothered to fix it. Wouldn’t it be much easier to fix it once than to ask us to bring the donkeys back all the time?”
“The town has kind of been taking advantage of the Madrigal gifts now that they’re back,” Agustín pointed out quietly. “Running to the family for help anytime something goes even slightly wrong. I try not to, but even I go to Julieta more often than I should.” He looked down in shame.
“Shh, amor, it’s not your fault you’re so allergic to bees.” Julieta patted his cheek affectionately. “Or that you keep finding them.”
“They’re everywhere!”
“He is right though.” Félix spoke up. He held Pepa protectively in his arms as they walked. “How many times do people ask for Luisa’s help instead of trying to figure out another way? And how often would people beg Bruno for visions rather than just plan their lives? Or ask you to heal the smallest of injuries? I get that paper cuts can be annoying but they’re not so bad to need magical healing, ¿eh?” He raised his hands with a chuckle, trying to lighten the mood.
“I suppose you’re right…” Alma trailed off, frowning.
“And what about Isa, having to conjure up plants all the time?” Mirabel chimed in. “Or Camilo, pulling babysitting duty constantly? Dolores, always having to keep an ear out for news? And poor tía Pepa! Anytime the weather isn’t what people want, she’s expected to make it up. ‘Make it sunny, make it rain, we don’t care how, just make it happen!’” She imitated mockingly. “Is it any wonder she made a hurricane on her wedding day?”
“I’m about to make a hurricane right now if we don’t find Antonio soon,” Pepa threatened. “Luisa, he has to have brought the donkeys back by now. Why don’t we check back there?”
“Good idea, tía,” she responded, but exchanged an uneasy glance with her mother, eyes darting towards the lightning now lining Pepa’s cloud. Clearly the two agreed that it would not be a good idea to bring Pepa within striking distance of the donkeys’ enclosure.
By this point, night had begun to fall. Pepa’s anxiety became even more palpable; wringing her hands and breaking away from the group, walking briskly in front of them. She stopped abruptly, narrowly avoiding another multi-Madrigal collision. “Dolores. Can you try to hear where he is?”
Dolores furrowed her brow. “I can try. It’s noisy tonight though. I’ll need to focus.”
“Please, Lola.” Pepa begged, shaking her shoulder. “I realize we ask too much of you, of each other really, but this is important.”
“I didn’t say I wouldn’t do it. I just said it’s noisy.” Dolores closed her eyes and screwed up her face, concentrating. “I can make out his voice. It’s coming from that direction.” She pointed.
“By the river?” Alma sounded doubtful. “Why would he go there?” A shadow passed over her face.
Dolores shrugged. “It can be a nice place to go think.”
“You like to go there too?” Isabela asked her curiously.
Dolores nodded. “Wait, ‘too’? You go to the river?”
“I like to look at the plants. Ones I don’t have to create. They’re beautiful.”
“It’s calm and peaceful there,” Julieta said. “Away from the hustle and bustle of town…”
“No one telling you how to feel...”
“No one telling you what to do…”
“You can just…exist.” Mirabel exhaled.
Alma stared at all of them in turn. “Are you telling me all of you like to go to the river? And you never ran into each other?”
“I’d go when I didn’t hear anyone there,” Dolores explained.
“I preferred to go in the early mornings,” Julieta admitted.
“And I’d go late at night,” Pepa added.
“I’d go when people were too busy to notice I was gone.” Isabela shrugged.
“Me too, except it was easier for me. No one really cared if I was gone.”
A heavy silence hung after Mirabel’s admission.
“Mira…” Julieta brushed the hair out of her face. “You know that’s not true, right? Of course we care. Ay, after Casita fell, I almost died of worry.” She shuddered at the memory.
“I know, mamá.” Mirabel smiled at her reassuringly. “Things were different before though.”
“As much as I love this touching moment, can we go find Antonio now?” Pepa cut in, a frantic edge to her voice. “It’s dark, and he’s all by himself.” She started walking again, and the rest followed suit.
“Maybe not.” Dolores tilted her head towards the river. “Someone is with him. I hear him talking with Antonio.”
“Ay, Dios…” Pepa ground her teeth. “Mi pobrecito Antonio, out there all alone with no one to protect him.”
“From tío Bruno?” Dolores laughed. “That’s who’s with him, you know.”
“Wait.” Everyone did a double take. “He’s not with us?”
“How did we all miss that?” Agustín wondered.
“He wasn’t with us at home either,” Félix observed.
“I guess we’re not used to him being back yet?” Mirabel offered in explanation. “Since none of us noticed he wasn’t here?”
“He also liked to sneak off before he…” Alma cleared her throat. “Sometimes I thought his gift was invisibility, the way he’d just disappear.”
Pepa pressed on, undeterred. “Come on, guys. We’re almost there.”
“You heard the lady!” Félix waved his hand as he bounded over the hill and joined Pepa in running down to the riverbank.
Antonio was indeed there, with some very strange company. Bruno sat on the ground, cross-legged, and an assortment of creatures surrounded them. Half a dozen rats danced on what appeared to be a makeshift stage. A couple capybaras were chilling in the water. And, as always, Antonio’s jaguar, Parce, lounged lazily nearby.
“Antonio!” Pepa exclaimed, nearly tackling the child as she enveloped him in her arms.
“Mamá! What are you doing here?” Antonio asked curiously.
“Ay Toñito, we’ve been looking for you for so long! You missed dinner, and it’s dark out now.” She peppered his face with kisses aggressively, pulling away suddenly. “What were you thinking?”
“I didn’t realize it had gotten so late,” Antonio defended, wiping his face off with his arm. “Tío Bruno and I came down here after I finished helping Luisa with the donkeys- which took like half an hour. Those donkeys sure are stubborn!” He shook his head in disbelief. “Anyway, I ran into tío Bruno who was coming down here and wanted me to join him.”
Pepa blinked slowly, eyes drifting from one to the other, trying to absorb all this information. “And the animals?” She asked weakly.
“They just follow me around wherever I go,” Antonio stated matter-of-factly. “Check it out, tío Bruno wrote a new play, and we’ve been rehearsing it together!”
“We?” Félix asked, quirking an eyebrow.
“Me and the animals, of course. Well, I’m mostly helping tío Bruno direct, but I think the rats have a good grasp on their parts now.”
The older Madrigals stifled a laugh at his precociousness.
“That’s great, Antonio!” Mirabel smiled at him encouragingly.
“Do you guys want to see?” He looked up at them expectantly. Bruno swiveled around to join him as the rats continued tap dancing across the stage.
“We-“ Everyone looked around, unsure how to respond. Luckily, they were spared the trouble.
Camilo’s stomach gurgled loudly. “Antonio, hermanito, you aren’t the only one who missed dinner. We kind of all missed dinner looking for you.”
“Milo!” Pepa looked at him reproachfully.
“What? It’s true! I’m not supposed to say things that are true? Obviously we were gonna look for you if you’re missing, but we did all miss dinner.”
“He is right, tía.” Luisa spoke up, almost bashfully. “It’s way past dinnertime.”
“Maybe we should all head back and eat,” Julieta suggested. “Then you can show us the play once all our tummies are full.”
“Okay…” Antonio started walking reluctantly. “Come on, Parce.” He waved the jaguar over.
“Oh, he is not coming back with us,” Pepa proclaimed. “Absolutely not.”
“But mamááá, he doesn’t want to be away from me. He’s like my pet.”
“Some people have dogs. You have a jaguar.” Pepa shook her head, rubbing circles over her temples. “Fine,” she relented finally. “But he is not sitting with us at the table.”
“Of course not,” Antonio agreed.
Pepa blinked, not expecting this to be so easy. “Good,” she said firmly.
“He’s too big to fit anyway,” Antonio reasoned. “Now the capybaras…”
“No animals at the table!”
“Not even the toucan?”
“Antonio!”

Encantober 2023 Day 21: Age
Tomorrow was Alma’s birthday, and since this was her first birthday since the miracle was restored and her first in ten years with her only son with her again, Because of this, Bruno wanted to make his mother’s birthday extra special this year. He asked his sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews about ideas to make Alma’s birthday extra special.
“Well, we know that she doesn’t really like anything over-the-top, so inviting the entire village doesn’t sound like a good idea,” Julieta explained.
“We should also not use sparklers because of what happened on your fiftieth birthday,” Agustin added.
“What happened on our fiftieth?” Bruno asked.
“Agustin thought it was a good idea to put sparklers in the cake instead of candles, and it exploded in their faces before they could blow them out,” Felix explained.
“That was a lesson learned; we are never using any dangerous explosives on anything ever again,” Agustin added.
“Even if you did suggest that, you have more than just me to convince you that it’s a bad idea, and you have to listen to all of us.”
“Maybe we can do something on the creative side? Make her something that we can all pitch in with?” Mirabel suggested.
The rest of the Madrigals smiled at the idea of making her something they all could contribute to. Mirabel has had a creative mind since she was a toddler, and some of her best ideas were about letting everyone get involved.
“We know that she loves hats, maybe we could buy a hat from the village square and we can each make something to put on it.”
The rest of the Madrigals liked the idea, they could each make something that represented them and could put it on a hat for Alma.
“We can go into the village square later this afternoon, and while we’re there, you all can make your contribution to the hat,” Julieta suggested.
“That sounds good, or maybe we can go now before all the best ones are sold out,” Pepa added.
“I like that better.”
“I’ll go get some art supplies from my room,” Mirabel said before she made her way upstairs.
Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno got up from the couch and made their way out the door as the rest of the Madrigal family made their way into the kitchen. They felt safer making their trinkets in the kitchen since it can get a little bit messy and Casita would much rather help clean up the kitchen than any other room in the house.
Mirabel came back downstairs with construction paper, scissors, glue, markers, and colored pencils, and found the rest of the family in the kitchen. She put her arts supplies on the table and spread them out for her family.
“I got every color of construction paper I could find in my room, so you can take whatever color you need for your trinket,” Mirabel explained.
The Madrigal family grabbed a piece of construction paper each to begin making their trinkets to put on Alma’s hat. They wanted to make something that Alma would associate with them so she could have a piece of her family with that hat. The family also talked about what they wanted to make.
The family spent a couple of hours making their trinkets until the triplets came back from the store with the hat they wanted to give to Alma. They came into the kitchen to see their family making their construction paper trinkets and the kitchen island covered in cut-up construction paper.
“Hola, mami, you found the hat you wanted?” Mirabel asked.
“Si, we found this hat that we think she would love to wear for church,” Julieta replied.
The triplets showed the rest of the family a big, magenta hat that matched Alma’s outfits. They decided that the hat itself could represent Alma. being the base of the trinkets. The hat would represent herself being the backbone of the Madrigal family, and the trinkets would represent each family member and how Alma held the family together.
“Do you want to show us what you made for the hat while we make our trinkets?” Pepa asked.
“Sure; can I go first?” Isabela asked.
“Sure, sobrina,” Bruno answered.
Isabela showed her creation, which was a flower made with lavender and dark purple construction paper, made in several three dimensional layers. “Since Abuela always called me her little flower, even before my gift ceremony, I thought this was perfect.”
Isabela pinned the flower on the hat, and Dolores showed off her creation. It was a red and yellow vinyl record with tiny music notes coming out of it. “I wanted Abuela’s hat to have something music related, since she always used to say how I brought music into her life.”
Dolores pinned her vinyl on the hat once Luisa showed her trinket. Hers was of a small donkey carrying two weights. “I thought of something simple since Abuela knows how much I love the donkeys in town.”
Luisa pinned the paper trinket on the hat and Camilo showed his trinket to the family. “I made a chameleon, since that was how Abuela always saw me.” He pinned his creation on the hat and Antonio decided to go next.
“I made a little paper Parce since I know Abuela loves being with Parce and he calms her down sometimes,” Antonio explained.
Once Antonio pinned his trinket on the hat, Agustin showed a little bee he made. “Alma knew since we were young how much of a bee magnet I’ve been, so I thought of putting this one next to Julieta’s when she’s done with hers.”
Felix showed his trinket after Agustin was done pinning his. “I made a little umbrella to show how I helped sheltered her daughter from her storms and gave her a welcoming home within myself.”
“Those are all such great creations. We just finished ours; I’ll go first,” Julieta said as she held up a paper arepa. “Since Mama always loved my arepas since I started making them, I decided to make one of the construction papers.”
Julieta pinned her trinket to the hat next to Agustin’s, and Pepa showed hers off. “I made a sun for her, since Sunshine was my nickname she gave me since I was a toddler and she always said how much I filled her life with sunshine.”
Pepa pinned her trinket next to Felix’s, and Bruno showed off a little green hourglass. “Since Mama always associated the hourglass with me, I thought it made sense to make one,” he said as he pinned the hourglass right between Julieta’s arepa and Pepa’s sun.
“Mirabel, are you finished with yours? You’ve been making yours for quite a while even after we got back,” Julieta pointed out.
“I have, but that’s because I wanted mine to include more than just me, but I’m finished now.” Mirabel then showed the family an aquamarine butterfly with multiple designs on it, similar to the one on her skirt. There were flowers, musical notes, a dumbbell weight, a chameleon, a jaguar, an arepa with a bee flying towards it, a sun with an umbrella underneath it, an hourglass, and a candle in the middle.
“I didn’t want to just have something that represented me, I wanted mine to represent everyone in the family. Since I know each of us are aging everyday and Abuela won’t be around for much longer, I will one day become the family matriarch and I did save the miracle and all of you when Casita fell.”
The rest of the family hugged Mirabel before she pinned her trinket in the middle of the hat. She wanted hers to be in the center, since hers has the candle on it, she wanted to make sure Alma’s sign was right in the middle.
“I think Mama will love this hat. I’ll keep in my room on the dresser until tomorrow,” Julieta said, as the family made their way upstairs with the hat.
-------------------------------------------
The next day was a day of Alma spending time with the family for her birthday. They just had a special dinner together, but right before they wanted to bring in the cake, they wanted to bring in the hat to show Alma.
“Wait here, mama, we all chipped in for a present for you together,” Julieta said as she made her way upstairs to find the hat. Once she got back downstairs, she presented her mother with the hat they made the day before.
“We wanted to make something that represented us so you can always have a piece of us everywhere you go,” Pepa explained.
Alma shed a tear when she examined the hat and noticed all the trinkets, representing each of her children, grandchildren, and sons-in-law. She cried tears of joy for several more minutes before gathering her words together.
“This is the best gift I ever got for my birthday. It shows how much my children and grandchildren care so much for me and want me to have pieces of them everywhere I go. Gracias, mijos.”
“We figured that since you have been the backbone of this family since the miracle found us, we would give you a hat that represented yourself and the decorations representing each of us. Since we know that another year is going by and you won’t be around for much longer, we wanted to show our appreciation for you by making something you know you’d love,” Mirabel explained.
Alma cried some more before saying what she wanted to say. “And I do love it. I’ll be wearing this hat to church every Sunday now. All of you know how to make each of my birthdays better than the last.”
The family spent the rest of the day celebrating by eating the cake Julieta made for them and looking back on old memories of Alma. Knowing that she is a year older was a bittersweet feeling for everyone, but they would not trade any of her birthdays for the world.

Haha. I wrote a novel-long post and you wrote one back!
Yeah, Alma as an unreliable narrator was one of the first things to deeply 'wow' me upon finishing the movie. I loved that we got to see a more raw version of her story in the end, but like you said, it's still from Mirabel's viewpoint. Which is also a good child-friendly excuse for the scene of Alma showing Pedro her three paper dolls despite not even showing yet. Lol.
I'm inclined to agree, now that you mention it, that a ton of people had to leave in order to make the Encanto as functional as it is. They have access to glasses, fireworks, and engagement rings. The resources and economy makes no sense to me. Especially when we have a house clearly capable of making whatever the family needs.
Speaking of the house, being both a mom and having struggles with depression myself I really appreciate Casita because it can help take care of the babies (I headcanon it creating structures to keep the babies from getting hurt while they learn to walk, playing games with them so Alma can do other stuff, etc.) And the house could also encourage her to eat, take care of herself, and keep her a bit of company as she recovers in those early days. It even gives her a room that kinda matches her old one.. Casita as a co-parent is both sad and sweet.
Also, thanks for putting 'Pedro stealing a donkey for his wife' idea in my head. I'm going to be thinking about that story for a while.
Bruno was probably the first of her babies Alma held.
Usually right after birth the baby is given to the mother. But when Julieta and Pepa were born, Alma was still giving birth to the next baby and couldn't very well hold the first baby at the moment. The midwife probably gave Julieta and Pepa to Pedro or another midwife or whoever.
But when Bruno was born, the birth was finished, and Alma was able to rest, and finally hold one of her babies.
Now I'm wondering how Alma managed to hold three babies at once while fleeing for her life. They would've been smaller than average, but still.

Tía Y/N (madrigal triplets & reader)
a/n: I have no idea where this came from, but here, take it. Hope you like it.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
"Tía Y/N!"
You sighed and rolled your eyes affectionately as the door to your room opened and your youngest niece entered, quickly pulling you.
"What's wrong Mirabel?" you asked, trying not to sound too worried
"Mom's doing it again"
You sighed. Of course, that woman would never learn the easy way.
"Don't worry, mi amor, I'll take care of it" you smiled at your favorite niece and gave her a kiss on the cheek before leaving to look for your sister.
You were Y/N Madrigal, the first daughter of Alma and Pedro, five years older than the triplets. Being old enough to know what happened when you received the miracle, you were the only one who remembered something about your father and the sacrifice he had to make to save you. That night would never be erased from your memory.
Since you were 10 years old when the triplets received their gifts, you didn't get one yourself, but you didn't have to. You were always a great help to your mother and since you were the only one who remembered Pedro, you were usually the one who comforted her.
Also, your lack of gift also made you closer to Mirabel, you were the only one who could understand her and you made sure that she always knew how special she was. You loved all your nephews and nieces, but she was special to you.
But all of them knew that they could always go to you if they needed something or wanted to escape from their parents' scolding because if there was one thing that everyone in Casita knew, it was that you had the greatest power of all: control the triplets.
You were their older sister, you had taken care of them since they were born, you taught them to talk, walk, you had even changed their diapers! (they always hated when you reminded them of that). You knew that to your siblings, you were more of a mother figure than a big sister, and you were okay with that because they were your babies too.
And that meant scolding them from time to time, no matter how many years passed.
Growing up, it was usually Pepa and Bruno who got scolded the most. God knows those two were a force of chaos when they were together and you often had to separate them while they fought and try bite each other.
"GO TO A CORNER EACH ONE!!"
"But mooooooom-"
"DON'T MAKE ME GO GET THE CHANCLA!!"
They would both run for their lives to get to the nearest corner. Alma would just roll her eyes, not bothered by the fact that her younger children called you mom instead of her. She even knew about the secret parties the triplets threw for you on Mother's Day. It hurt a little to know that she wasn't present enough in her children's lives, but at least they had you.
_____________________
When Agustín and Félix came, you made sure to let them know that you would break every single bone in their bodies if they hurt your girls, but fortunately, they had both proven themselves worthy of Julieta and Pepa, so together with Bruno, the four of you had become good friends, much to your sisters' relief.
That was, of course, until their husbands betrayed them and started helping you when you punished them, even as adults. It didn't matter that they already had children of their own, you would still scold them like the mother you were to them.
"PEPA!!! WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT TAKING MY BOOKS WITHOUT PERMISSION?! YOU ARE GROUNDED, YOUNG LADY!"
"Y/N, I'm 49, please stop, you can't-"
"TO THE CORNER OR NO FELIX FOR YOU FOR A MONTH!"
The redhead would gasp and run to the kitchen corner as soon as possible, knowing perfectly well that Felix, while he loved her, was also afraid of an angry Y/N and would move into the guest room if necessary. Dolores and Camilo, trying to contain their laughter, would have to explain to a confused Antonio why his mother was behaving like a girl around aunt Y/N.
_____________________________
When Bruno left, you were devastated. He was your child, the youngest, and you felt like you had failed him. At first, you locked yourself in your room, someone would bring you food because you didn't even want to go out for that. It wasn't until Pepa cried outside your door that you realized your sisters were still there and needed you. You couldn't take one more sibling from them.
So you went out and tried to get on with your life, even though your smile wasn't as bright as it used to be. Bruno had seen all of that from the walls, he knew how much he had hurt you. And so, when he came back, your reaction was what worried him the most. Would you still even want him? He was pleasantly surprised when you ran to him to catch him in a crushing hug along with Pepa and Julieta.
"Oh my god, my boy is back!" you cried
But after all the warm welcome, the storm came. You looked into his eyes and he could see that maternal warmth fading, replaced by dangerous anger.
"Now run" you muttered somberly
The rest of the family looked at you confused, but your sisters knew what was coming and nodded. It was definitely better for him to start running as fast as possible. And hey! You were pitying him by at least giving him a warning first! They had had to learn to run cross country.
Bruno paled when he saw you reach down and grab your shoe. His legs quickly carried him as far as possible, but there was no escape.
"HOW DARE YOU WORRY ME LIKE THAT, YOUNG MAN?!"
Your nephews and nieces watched in fear and amazement as you threw your shoe and it hit him right in the head. Blessed mom skills. Your sisters and brothers-in-law tried not to laugh while your mother simply rolled her eyes affectionately.
_________________________
Pepa and Bruno were usually the ones getting scolded, even now as adults. But that didn't mean that Julieta was out of danger. No sir.
__________________________
"JULIETA MADRIGAL!!!"
The brunette froze in her place from the sink. She knew that tone and it wasn't good. What had she done to awaken the Kraken?! She looked at Pepa and Bruno, who were one on each corner, having already been scolded earlier in the day. They both looked at her with fear and pity.
"Run" Bruno whispered.
"Escape while you can" Pepa agreed
The oldest triplet was usually more mature than that, but there was a switch that flipped in her, one that took her back to her childhood years and told her that anything was better than being scolded by you. So she stopped what she was doing and tried to run, but before she could even make it out of the kitchen, your hand clamped around her forearm, stopping her.
You looked your younger sister in the eye, feeling a twinge of satisfaction when the 50-year-old woman swallowed hard. You still had it.
"How many hours have you sleep, young lady?" you asked quietly, but that only made the environment feel more dangerous.
Julieta didn't know what to answer and she only had to look at Mirabel hiding behind Agustín to know who were the ones who had betrayed her. Pair of traitors.
"I..." she was silent, there was no point in lying to you. You always knew.
She widened her eyes in fear when you let go of her arm and grabbed her ear hard. Oh no, please not that!
"I TOLD YOU YOU HAVE TO SLEEP, MARÍA JULIETA!!!"
"I didn't know that mom's name was María" Mirabel whispered to her father, who shook his head.
"It's not, your aunt only calls her that when she's mad" he explained, moving aside to let you walk up the stairs.
He was sure his wife would be upset with him, but she would thank him later. She had to rest and sometimes the only way to get her to do it was to call in the big guns.
Pepa and Bruno poked their heads fearfully out of the kitchen frame, silently watching as you dragged their triplet up the stairs, still holding her ear tightly.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch" Julieta cried "Y/N let go of me! I'll go to sleep, I promise!"
But you had no mercy. And you just finished dragging her by the ear and into her room.
"Tssssk...She used THE name" Pepa muttered "Julieta is dead"
"We just lost a sister" Bruno nodded "never forgetti, rest in spaghetti"
"... I want her dresses"

I wrote this as an opening for another fic which I wound up scrapping, because the reason I wrote it as an intro no longer applies to the story, and it kind of just interrupted the flow otherwise. Now it's just a fluffy oneshot about Bruno and a three-year-old Mirabel. 🌸
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bad Vision
There was a knock on Bruno's door.
That was surprising. Nobody really visited Bruno - not without an appointment, anyway, since nobody liked to surprise-visit the local domesday prophet. He worried his mother wanted something - would she have knocked? - when the door uneasily opened and revealed Mirabel, the doorknob barely reaching her chin.
"Tío Bruno!" she said happily, as though seeing him in his own home was a surprise.
Mirabel was turning four. She was easily the star of the family, and certainly the apple of her grandmother's eye. She was, even at the age of three, talkative and doggedly helpful. Everybody in town loved her - intelligent for her age, cute as pie, and toddling after them happily, saying: "What's that?" and, "You're really good at selling things" and, "I want to do that when I grow up." Alma took her interest in people as a sure sign that she'd grow up selfless and dedicated; Bruno, on the other hand, observed that Mirabel was good at relating to adults because she wasn't good at relating to other kids. He had a suspicion she'd grow up to be socially awkward, although Alma would probably disapprove.
"Hello?" he said, as she hugged his knees like she hadn't seen him at least a few days ago. "What are you doing here, Mirabel?"
Bruno hadn't asked the kids not to talk to him, but evidently someone had, because his sobrinos never really came in here. And, indeed, he never left. Mirabel had forgotten about him and was admiring the patterns on his walls.
"I need a vision," she said happily.
Bruno's chest tightened a little. "W-who told you that?"
Not his mother. Please not his mother. He'd always been afraid she'd demand to know Mirabel's Gift in advance. Couldn't he watch Mirabel grow up in real time like everybody else?
Mirabel seemed unbothered. "Camilo did."
Oh. That was less worrying. If it was Camilo then it was probably about that night's dinner. Bruno let out a sigh of relief.
"What do you need a vision about, mija?" he asked.
"I can't read."
Bruno suppressed a smile. "But you're only three, Mirabel, you'll learn to read when you're older."
He went to stand next to her as she stared up at the murals. She took his hand and began to swing it gently.
"No," she insisted, "I can't read."
He was puzzled. "I... promise you will learn to read eventually. I'm sure you'll be great at it."
Mirabel took on the patient cadence of her mother explaining something complicated. "But I need a vision from you, or I won't be able to do it."
Bruno scratched his head.
"Would you like me to teach you to read?" he said eventually. "We wouldn't have to use a vision. We could just... use a book."
Mirabel brightened up. "Okay!" she said. "Did you draw this picture?"
She pointed up at the mural on the wall. Bruno chuckled.
"No, I didn't. Casita did."
"I think it's pretty."
Bruno was heartened to hear that; Pepa constantly called his room's decor 'creepy'. "I think so too."
"Can I touch it?"
She had apparently forgotten about learning to read. Bruno picked her up under the arms, surprised to find she was much heavier than he'd remembered, and grunted as he held her up to see the wall. She reached out a hand, beaming, and ran it along the lines. Then she giggled.
"I'm tall," she said.
"You'll probably be this tall when you're older," Bruno told her, the wisened words of a man whose sisters were both taller than him. "Then you'll be able to touch the carvings by yourself."
"I'm four tomorrow!" she declared.
"Tomorrow?" Oh no, it was tomorrow. He had no idea where the time had gone. "I-Is that right? What are you going to get for your birthday?"
"A vision," she said happily.
"I don't think," he began, then sighed. "What about a book? A book with nice pictures like these."
"Yeah!"
He perched her on his hip, and she wrapped her arms around him as he took her to see the next mural. She was, admittedly, a little heavy for this process, but it wasn't like he was getting much exercise otherwise.
"When I can write, I'm going to write a book," she said.
"A book about what?"
"You and me and Luisa and Isabela," explained Mirabel, "And Casita."
"Me? In the book?"
"Yes," said Mirabel firmly, "You'll be in the book, making things."
"What kinds of things?"
"Nice pictures on walls, like these."
Bruno chuckled and shook his head. "Yeah, alright."
Bruno's door swung open again. Bruno found himself freezing, as though he'd been caught doing something wrong; it was only Camilo, though, the other little sobrino, striding in like he owned the place.
"Why are you here?" he demanded.
"So I can read," said Mirabel, "Tío Bruno says he can teach me."
"No he can't," said Camilo, "You can't read."
Mirabel's lip wobbled. Bruno wished his problems were as simple and Mirabel and Camilo's.
"Tío Bruno can give me a vision," said Mirabel, "Then I'll be able to read."
"It's his fault!" shouted Camilo. "Tío Agustín says you can't learn to read because you have bad vision!"
Bruno burst into laughter. By the looks both Mirabel and Camilo were looking at him, they didn't get it at all.
"Mirabel," he said, "For your birthday, why don't we get you a pair of glasses, like your dad's? Then we could fix your vision."
Mirabel cheered up immediately at this. She put her fingers to her face and made a glasses shape. "Like Pa's?"
"Yes, like those! They could be your special birthday glasses. How would that be?"
Mirabel smiled brightly.
"I want glasses too!" Camilo cried, tugging the end of Bruno's ruana.
Bruno suppressed a bark of laughter. "I give people bad visions, Camilo, not bad vision! And anyway, your birthday's already done!"
"I want orange glasses!" Camilo was practically ripping the ends off the ruana. Bruno had to tug them out of his hands.
"I want my glasses to be green," said Mirabel happily, "Like Tío Bruno."
"Like Tío Bruno, huh?" said Bruno, grinning.
Mirabel took Bruno's hand, and Camilo, seeing that he was being left out, took the other.
"We have to tell Pa!" said Mirabel.
"You have to make it happen!" insisted Camilo.
Bruno chuckled and - for once in his life - let the kids pull him out of his room. He had to admit, they were a lot of fun. He could get used to this.

Random Encanto Headcanons I Want To Word Vomit:
Mirabel isn't cured of her bad eyesight; not because Julieta doesn't want to, it's just that there's only so much she can cure.
Pepa was picked on for the gap in her teeth and smiled with a closed mouth for a while until Félix came along.
PB&J had sleepovers in Julieta's room very often but then she got married.
Camilo eats everything he puts on his plate.
Dolores won't eat certain foods because the sounds of crunchy things hurt her ears. When the miracle leaves, she tries out things she's never had before and loves them.
Mariano thought he was in love with Isabela, his family didn't completely arrange it and neither did Isa's, Alma wouldn't let her marry him if she knew she didn't love him.
Said it once and I'll say it again: Aroace Bruno supremacy.
Bruno teaches his rats tricks, like fetch, that's how they knew how to bring his vision back to him, as well as food scraps.
Bruno is actually very good at drawing, his simplistic drawings might fool you but they show how he has the knowledge to reduce something to its basic shapes and still make it recognisable.
Sometimes, Antonio wonders if the animals lie to him.
Alma considered putting Bruno's picture in her locket along with Pedro's, after he left.
The concept art has Dolores liking music and playing her own. But imo, music irritates her ears. (I talked abt this briefly before-but I have an idea for a fic, after the fall of casita, where Dolores hears music for the first time)
Pepa and Dolores finally get closer after casita falls. Pepa gets very emotional, she loves her babies❤️💖
Alma's opinion of Agustín changed greatly after she learned he could play piano. The woman loves herself some talents.
Luisa doesn't have muscles because of the miracle, she'd be strong regardless (example: her ceremony photo and the fact that she couldn't lift a plant pot once her gift started fading) she works out purposefully because she wants to be muscular. (plus, a cute lil addition: when she was around 11 or 12, she learned about Hercules, probably from her pa reading the myth to her-and idolised him, then asked for her first set of weights for her birthday so she could look just like him!)
Camilo is a theater kid (obviously) and is in the drama club at school. He can hit high notes pretty well.
Mirabel is actually very popular with some villagers, they feel less anxious to speak to her without the unspoken power imbalance that is having a gift, others though, do think she's strange and a bad omen.
Mirabel doesn't really have many friends at school but she never misses a day, she pushes through and forces herself to stay chipper even though it hurts.
Dolores is autistic.
Camilo is such a mama's boy, he and Pepa often go out together and have a 'girls night'.
ANGST ALERT:
Bruno has OCD intrusive thoughts (like me😳😳) and an eating disorder (like me. Dw, I'm recovered now tho). Because I love projecting -
Julieta stress eats and sometimes gets insecure.
Pepa has anxiety. Duh.
Camilo wonders if he is actually the way he looks or if he's just shifting subconsciously, he worries he might never truly know what he looks like if that's true and often feels like a fraud or a different person in his own skin, that's why (I think) after he lost his powers, the first thing he did was look at his hand, to see if it changed.
That's enough for one day-

Demon Slayer Mirabel Madrigal
I played with the idea a lot back then, and it's still one of my favorite aus that I've made (though it's an older piece, if I have time I'd love to redraw her).
In the story, five years have passed since Mirabel disappeared after Antonio's ceremony, and the little boy is still grieving. He wants to clear his mind but falls into a forgotten trap, set by a demon before the Encanto was formed and finds himself in Japan.
He's taken by the demon with the drums. Tanjirou saves him, and outside the house he sees Mirabel and learns that she became a demon slayer to help people.
Mirabel fell into the same trap Antonio did, and she immediately got chased by a demon. She was saved by the Kocho sisters, who led her to Ubuyashiki, who told her that both Alma and Pedro were demon slayers but moved to Colombia when they learned that Alma was pregnant.
Mirabel started to train and recreate the Madrigal breathing style from scratch. The name comes from the term "madrigal" in music. Long story short, she's able to practice multiple breathing styles at once (different from creating a new style by combining them). Later, she became the "Madrigal Hashira".
I have a comic from this fic that I'll post here too, but you can check it out on my Instagram page already.

Encantober Day 29 - Parents
Full disclosure this is an AU in which the miracle still happened but Pedro survived and found himself in the Encanto scarred but alive a few days later
Also! Part one is inspired by this cute fan video
~~~~~
On a warm evening, with nothing else to do, the parents and grandparents (for the fifth time!!!) decide it’s time for the youngest to undergo the Test.
Mirabel, two years old, must choose who her favourite father figure is.
Agustín, Bruno, Félix and Pedro stand apart from each other in the courtyard of Casita, with Julieta holding a squirmy Mirabel in her arms at the front door. Pepa holds a camera, ready to capture the action. Alma sits on a chair nearby, a cup of tea in her hands.
“Ready? Go, Mirabel, go!” Julieta sets her down. The toddler screeches with glee as she runs straight to Tío Bruno and begins pulling at his ruana. The prophet can only laugh in shock and nerves as he picks the little girl up. Beside him, Agustín looks ready to cry.
Pepa and Julieta howl with laughter, the latter too amused to acknowledge her husband’s pain. Félix is not any better, chuckling as he joins Alma in the living room.
Pedro comes up behind Agustín and pats his back. “First time?” Agustín squeaks.
“Don’t worry, she still loves you as her father,” Pedro says. “She just has… skewed priorities at this stage in life.”
“Oh, don’t go putting ideas into his head,” Alma teasingly snaps. She turns to the other grown-ups with a mischievous grin. “Did I ever tell you about the triplets’ parental preferences when they were babies?”
“I don’t think so,” Bruno says as he untangles his hair from Mirabel’s fingers. “But now I’m intrigued.”
“Please don’t start!” Pedro begs.
“The triplets had just learned how to crawl…” Alma begins loud enough for everyone to hear.
*
“Alright, you’ve had enough time with Bruno, it’s time for some father-son bonding time,” Pedro says one late afternoon. The two girls play on the floor, engaged in a war with a big blanket. Bruno has demanded Alma’s attention, resting against her chest as she rubs his back.
Alma raises an eyebrow. “Alright, but fair warning, I think he’s already picked his favourite parent.”
Pedro scoffs. “Impossible! I’m his dad, we’re the only boys in the house! That’s something we can bond over!”
“I don’t think sharing a gender is going to get you very far in terms of building a healthy relationship,” Alma admits, holding Bruno out.
Pedro picks him up in a shoulder hold, smiling. “Watch me.”
Immediately, Bruno begins crying. Pedro startles at his son’s loud wailing. Bouncing him up and down, Pedro shushes Bruno in vain. Almost immediately, Julieta and Pepa begin screaming as well, almost as if they feel the pain of their brother.
Alma gives Pedro a dagger-piercing glare. Pedro smiles sheepishly.
“Don’t say anything yet!” he splutters. “Maybe Bruno is just gassy. I’ve got this!”
Pedro soon learns that he doesn’t got this. While Alma is quickly able to calm their daughters down, Pedro spends an agonizing five minutes trying to comfort Bruno in vain. The baby squirms in his father’s grasp, screaming the whole time.
Pedro finally gives up and hands Bruno back to Alma’s waiting arms. The minute Bruno feels his mother’s embrace, his sobs slowly subside.
Alma smirks at her husband, who wears a goofy pout.
“Fine, but- at least I have Pepa and Julieta! They’ve already established themselves as las princesitas de papá,” Pedro declares, sitting on the floor next to his daughters. Pepa proceeds to crawl away from her dad and towards Alma, Julieta is not far behind.
Alma’s laughter only gets louder as Pedro dramatically collapses to the ground in defeat.
Of course I have more to say about this resident 8 Au!
First I love the idea you have for the family it honestly all seems really cool. Though I do think for Julieta instead of her hand spontaneously combusting, little cuts appear and the black mold starts leaking out from it and wrapping around her hands at random making it hard to do whatever it is that you was doing and if she's making food/touches food it completely infects the food in mold. I think for Alma it was an experiment on her throat because she likes to argue so much You can see the incision marks and sometimes The incision marks will open up and leak black she can still can talk but her voice is a little bit more grainy and sometimes it's hard for her to talk so she has to drink water more and will sometimes not talk to try and save her voice.
The Dimitrescu family is painfully aware of the fact that Mirabel likes her family more than them. Which is why I feel like they had the first response that they did because in all I feel like that family is a very territorial and aggressive even when they try not to be. so when they first meet something that they view as a threat which was unfortunately the rest of mirabel's family (they are a threat to their relationship to Maribel) their instincts take over and make them act a little bit more aggressive but the more time that they spend with the family the less aggressive they are it took them a while (bela and Isabela did bond over the fact that they had similar names) but they eventually were fairly friendly with most of them (they tolerate the men.)
When it comes to Ethan maribel's entire house obviously is a safe area except for maybe one moment when Miranda shows up at random to "check in" on Mirable. I 100% believe that Maribel or maybe even some of her family members helped him in the final fight against Miranda and he lives! and Mirabel not trusting Chris or blue umbrella pulled him, Mia (I'm pretty sure she was also kidnapped again) and Rose into hiding with her and her family because I do not want them in umbrella custody or anywhere near that facility! only bad things happen I want them all to be happy in the end and away from all of that horribleness!
As for art! I would love to see the family fussing over Mirabel maybe when they had first gotten there or just in general how they act with her? and maybe a couple of Antonio following her around? And possibly the family and the Dimitrescu family interacting? Anything really you want to draw for it I would love to see it! I really enjoy your art style and know just how time consuming it can be!
RESIDENT EVIL 8 GRAHHHH 👺💪💪
No but uh. I'm glad you agree, and the Julieta one is so much better <333 ALSO THE ALMA ONE WORKS❗❗ That was actually similar to what I was thinking, so incision, maybe a failed attempt at trying to remove her vocal chords?? L Miranda but W Mirabel for letting her keep them ig 😭😭
Also Alcina and her daughters are just gonna have to tough it out cuz with the way they act??? Listen, Mirabel is optimistic, but not that optimistic 💀💀 and the fact that they were passive-agressive to her family (straight up aggressive to the men), doesn't help that 🗿 but at least they somewhatade up and even if they don't like each other, they tolerate each other for Mirabel's sake <\\3
ALAO ETHAN LETS GOOOOO I know he was scared out of his mind when Mirabel shoved him to a cupboard and he heard Miranda's voice the next second. He also learned that Mirabel is Mirands's favorite in that moment 🤧 maybe he uses that to an advantage?? I mean sure the Duke is there, but Mirabel or her family might be able to get rarer items, for cheaper too 💀 plus they might be more helpful in finding Rose. You know how frustrating it was to hear "Look a little closer 🤓☝"
HE LIVES AND GETS TO RAISE ROSE LETS GOOOO 🦅🦅 ALSO I AGREE WITH NO UMBRELLA BUT...I thought the B.S.A.A was good??? But maybe I'm trippin', I mean it is RE, and Mia is sorta the problem to all this. Like if she just told Ethan the truth a lot of things could've been avoided 🥸 anyway, I think Ethan staying with the Madrigals (maybe permanently or just near wherever they were relocated in Colombia) is a cool idea, they can help him with Rose <333
AND ART YEAHHHGG OF COURSE I CAN I LOVE THIS AU <33 I really appreciate the ideas and??? I'm glad you love it 🤭🤭 I originally was working on it but got busy hence why it took me. A week to past this rather than a few days BUT HOPEFULLY IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN 🤓☝
Anyway art <333 Antonio's clothes (that Miravel made obvi) are based off of a lady bug so. Ladybug and Mantis. Lil bro is still happy to be around Mirabel even AFTER the experiment, its wild 🏃♀️ she tries to distance herself after the experiments on the family, thinking they'd hate her and never forgive her, but Antonio just refuses to leave her and she slowly gets closer again.
I LOVE THIS AU 👹👹
Encanto Fic Recommendation Pt. 2
Hello! I'm back due to popular demand, jk. My twt moots decided to vote that I should post a second part of this, so here I am!
My opinions are unreliable and are more on the emotions I felt while reading. And it is given that I get too tired of writing the "reviews" that some fics will have one to none, but it doesn't mean that I don't love it, I'm just lazy.
Please tag the authors if they are here so I can tag them in their respective works.
And without further ado, fic recommendation pt. 2! Part 1
Series
Finding Your Place by monkiimax
The Sandman by cthene
La Familia Madrigal: Future Gen by GhostsintheAttic
What Does Love Sound Like? by Highly_Illogical
A little dinner scandal by SrebrnaFH
Stand-Alone
The Sandman by cthene (@cthene) = I am absolutely devastated with this fic. As much as I love their dynamic, I'm still crying. Bruno is such a badass when he learns to protect his family. Very wholesome, and will have you holding your breath every sentence, especially in chapter 2. Bring tissues, the angst is just *weeps*
The Precipice by RinnySega (@rinnysega) = I'm emotionally invested in this fic and I can't stop crying. pls RINNY STOP TORTURING OUR BOI
something unexpected by Wikluk for ADabOfBlessings (@wikluk) = holy shit Julie is pregnant and Antonio being the primo mayor he always wanted to be.
Help will always be offered by Casita by Dragonposeidon = Characters watch the movie but with young Alma and Pedro adgfksdfsks please theyre trying.
A New Way of Life by Catlovingmermaid = yeah Mirabel getting her legs crushed and their magic is gone. Now this got me thinking, why do we always put her into so much emotional damage? ahdajksdka but yeah same.
Eternal Candle Light by Sanda_Brask = Mariano/Dolores being the cute married couple but with the angst
Rumble Thy Bellyful! by cheetour (@cheetee) = Mariano being the resident himbo is so funyyyyy. and also Mariano/Dolores.
Object Permanence by cannibalthoughts = Mirabel found it hard to pin down Bruno but he was so good at blending with the shadows.
Written in Glass Not Stone by CaptainTardis = The family makes amends and fixes the cracks before they get worse.
Letting In The Light by WifeOfBean (@wifeofbean) = two words, emotional damage. i can only imagine how hurt Alma is, but at least she got reunited with Pedro? ig? anyways, im thinking as they are also Madrigals, would they get gifts too?
Anything To Remember by Buckalicious = Mirabel wants to remember her tio Bruno and the candle helps her.
A Second's Forever by masqcat = *cries loudly* poor Julieta.
And I Hear You by IBleedCottonCandy = Dolores had been through a lot just to have her happy ending. a lot of family angst and heartbreak.
Moving to the moment and the moment to the moving by ShyLittle_Frog = im a little confused with the timeline but the idea for this fic is amzing. and also, little Mirabel grrrr
Tremors by Missilestorm (@missilestorm1) = Mirabel finally gets a gift after the fall of Casita, but she feels more isolated more than ever.
This Might As Well Happen by LissyStrata = Bruno becomes a rat and the family bonds over it.
The Rats Talking in the Walls by SorryIWasAsleep (@sorryiwasasleep) = Instead of going to Luisa, Mirabel takes the Dolores's words literally and went to Antonio.
Primos by LittleRedTea = collection of one-shots of Milo & Mira duo throughout the years.
What if Mirabel was Banished? by GoldenRose29 = a twist on villain Mirabel but this time the family deserved everything. I mean why the fuck would they banish a child and then ban her from seeing her mother? And her only support was her grandpa and Pedro being supportive abuelo. zsdjzhfkjhfs so much feels for this.
the unspoken (in)visible pain by the_glare_you_see = scrappy Mira ftw.
Burned And Buried by Hlootooart (@hlootooart) = have u seen the art and this fic??!! its amazing. the family dynamics are well-written. the world? just amazing
Nothing In This World by EchoBleu = the family thought that Bruno killed Mirabel and now they're back in the Encanto.
One Step Closer by Breanna (@breannaaiedail) = she's back with another fic for the The Distance Between Us series. It's angsty. It's comforting. And if you read my previous fic rec, you know how much I love this series.
A Miracle, Ten Years Overdue by karimeaway = Mirabel as a ghost that only Antonio can see.
And Every Year Our Family Blessings Grow by Calicy = Dolores got pregnant unexpectedly, they eloped, and Mariano gets in trouble with Dolores's family.
Choices, Chances and Changes by Baamon5evr = I love the alternating time povs of this fic. basically, Bruno and Mirabel runaway from the Encanto and then returned.
Among the Emeralds by crazyashley (@thecrazyashley-blog) = Bruno/OC where the OC is a cafe owner and a book enthusiast. THEY ARE SO CUTE TOGETHER
NSFW
The Shade of the Sheets Before All the Stains by inredbluegreen = Bruno/Reader but the reader is a prostitute. Honestly, this made me want to be one if I get Bruno as a customer. I'm a thirsty bitch for him just for him tho.
EDIT: if it’s not a bother, you can check the fics I wrote too! skdhdkaks pls i need validation jk 1/2. anyways enjoy!
Headcanons for @montremercy, based on the concept "The movie's focused on the family, but do individual Madrigals have, like, friends in town? Or - we know how the town viewed Bruno, but what do they think when they look at the rest of the family?"
I am going to say, no, they don't really have friends. Even Antonio we don't really see playing with the kids his age, iirc. They're all FRIENDLY with people, but socially speaking their friend groups are incredibly limited and erratic. Alma never wanted to show weakness to the town or worry anyone about the stability of the miracle, so she always kept herself distant, and her kids and grandkids low-key learned the same thing. They have a responsibility, and that's more important than making friends.
Julieta everyone loves and is grateful for; Pepa everyone is grateful for but low-key fears upsetting. They do not want lightning. Nobody wants the lightning. Ever.
Felix and Agustin were kind of exceptions to the way most of the town felt about the Madrigals, not in that they respected them less or anything but in the sense that Pepa was nothing but rainbows around Felix for AGES and Julieta was constantly fussing over Agustin for having walked into another beehive, so they got especially friendly. Felix was like "she storms? when??" and Agustin was like "I realize I am currently covered in painful beestings but I must inform you that this arepa is delicious" and that's basically where their respective romances started.
Dolores people are awkward around because She Knows and they KNOW she knows. Camilo they don't even realize they're talking to half the time and don't know how to talk to when they do. Antonio they're nice to but also don't really know how to treat because he MIGHT set rats on them if they upset him. He's never actually done that, mind, but no one wants to be the first.
Isabela is Perfect, and no one has any idea what to say to her without feeling like an idiot. Luisa is always on the move, so no one really CAN say much to her. And Mirabel is the most accessible family member, if only because the townspeople are the most comfortable with talking to her about certain stuff they want/need from the rest of the fam. Which has definitely not given her a complex or anything, for sure.
On the Tangled au, what would the family’s reaction be to seeing Mirabel again?
Honestly their first reaction would be confusion, mirabels been kept in a tower away from the family for five years, the last time they saw her she was 5, they wouldn’t recognise her at first in the slightest.
The family thought Mirabel was dead, they had a funeral and everything! The town convinced them that they found her body at the bottom of a cliff. Julieta was inconsolable and is now basically a shell of herself, she’s mute and she doesn’t cook anymore, she thought she couldn’t save her daughter so what use was she.
Mirabels hair is matted, she doesn’t have a hairbrush and no one will fix it for her, it’s not been cut in years and her dress is too long on her (it was an old bit of curtains she turned into a sloppy dress). She’s also barefoot, the town didn’t think she’d ever leave so they never have her any, her feet and mangled and bloody?
When Mirabel first entered casita, it immediately stopped helping and caring about anyone else at the party, casita immediately recognised her and was ecstatic to have her back, it always favoured the girl for some reason. Mirabel was its favourite and she was back.
The villagers were in a panic though, trying to keep the madrigals away from her and trying to usher her out the building, which was stopped in every way by casita trying to keep her safe
Not all of the villagers know about Mirabel, it’s mainly the elders and older adults that know, the only exception is Mariano who went for a hike one day and found the young girl and visits her alot.
After a while the madrigals would be able to get their way through the crowd and spot the ten year old, anxiously standing on the spot, and genuinely scared of casita. The villagers hid that part from her.
Pepa is trailing Julieta behind her, ever since Mirabel went missing she’s tried to take care of her sister. And next to her is Felix who’s holding baby Antonio who the party is for, Julieta hasn’t spoke since Mirabel went missing, but when she spotted the girl she felt familiar, the family stared at Mirabel for a solid five minutes sharing quite mumbles before Julieta steps forward crouching down so she makes eye contact with her daughter and lets out a tiny, hourse
“Mira..?” Mirabel just nods her head quietly and all hell breaks loose, Julieta and Agustin run and pull their daughter into a tight hug with her siblings and Camilo not far behind, unlike everyone else he never entertained the idea that she was dead, but it was still a relief. The rest of the family are mostly in shock before Alma declares that the party is over.
Some of the villagers scared of being caught making up excuses like “how do we know she’s not lying?” To “oh that’s my baby sister from out of town, she’s ill I need to take her home” the family aren’t having any of it and order them our which casita quickly does without a second thought.
They take Mirabel into the kitchen everyone fretting over her and making sure she’s ok and for the first time in five years Julieta makes healing food, she’s so glad she can. Everyone tries to interrogate her on what happened and where she’s been but the girl barely has any knowledge on English only knowing “food” “drink” “stop” and “sorry”
They wouldn’t really find out for years what happened to Mirabel but she’s highly traumatised, she dosent really get better at speaking but she finnally learns to read a write.
The family is protective in Mirabel in their own ways through this though, after what happened they can’t stand to see her sad, especially since she never lost her kindness, she didn’t deserve what happened
Surprisingly Mirabel get closest with Antonio, she’s set back mentally alot. So the family teach them together, he dosent treat her different or like she’s about to break. She’s just Mirabel and not Mirabel it gives her normalcy and she loves him for it
The town get away with what they did for another five years until Mirabel explains in a diary what happened that she tries to hide but its eventually found
The family aren’t happy in the slightest
The people they lived with, that they trusted, that felt like family had done something so vile. And to a five year old, a toddler and seemingly have zero remorse.
It’s not a pretty sight
It’s a pretty big blood bath and none of them feel bad about it
