Hello🥹 I’m new to your blog and I’m loving the AYW series. I honestly got hooked on the Ryan’s Birthday party one shot, could I maybe request a follow-up to Steve’s and Eddie’s conversation of “you should be fucking the babysitter”? maybe Eddie accidentally bumping his head against the car he was working on and coming out and sharing a beer with Steve starting with “no man, no way”, and then sharing feelings about his relationship with Brittany and with her? Maybe confessing he has somewhat of a crush on her? And then coming home to find her after that conversation with Steve? Maybe Steve is the one who drops him home and comes inside the house for a bit? Haha sorry if it is too specific 🥹💖 I’m really loving the series
It was time for some more of this dynamic duo. This picks up right at the end of Ryan's Birthday

“So, uh, question for you. Are you fucking the babysitter? Because between you and me? You should be.”
Eddie’s head bumps against the hood of the car he had just begun to work on again. His throat goes dry, words failing him as he stares into the face of his best friend. “What?” he finally rasps out. W-Why would you ask that?”
Steve can’t help but roll his eyes. Munson can’t act for shit and Steve wonders how he never noticed the man’s crush on the younger woman before.
“Oh, cut the bullshit, it’s me,” Steve says.
The bangs and whirs of the garage around them suddenly seem too quiet to Eddie, like everyone in the building will hear anything he says out loud. But what is he going to say? He’s never uttered a word about his feelings for you out loud. The guilt already ate at him that he had these feelings at all. It was hard enough to admit how he feels about you to himself, he isn’t sure how to vocalize it, even if it is to his best friend.
“I, uh…” Eddie clears his throat and takes the grease-soaked rag off his shoulder just to have something to do with his hands.
“Dude,” Steve says. “Do you think I’m going to tell anyone? What, I’m gonna go to Brittany? I hate talking to her about anything at all; I’d never voluntarily do it. Just spill it, I already know.”
“H-How?” It’s the only word Eddie’s able to utter.
Steve huffs a laugh, amazed by his friend’s obliviousness.
“You weren’t subtle. I mean, maybe to someone who doesn’t know you. But I was there back in those days when you fell in love with Brittany. Shit, you look at the babysitter with way more love than you ever did her. I thought I’d see little cartoon hearts in your eyes.”
Heat blooms in Eddie’s face, both in embarrassment and nervousness. His eyes shift from left to right, his mind running all over the map. If Steve noticed, who else did? Wayne did give him a look at the end of Ryan’s party the other day. Of course the old man knows, he knows Eddie better than anyone.
Wait, if Steve clocked this, did Nancy? Oh God, she must think he’s the worst. Having these thoughts and feelings about a woman who isn’t his wife. A woman who is so much younger than him. Did Max notice? Did Lucas? Did you?
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, chill the hell out,” Steve says, waving a hand in front of his friend. “Stop that brain from going into panic mode.” “Do you think anyone else–”
“No,” Steve says before Eddie can finish his question. “I started to look out for it once I noticed. Then it was painfully obvious. You look like a God damn puppy when she smiles at you.”
An involuntary goofy smile grows on Eddie’s face, and it’s all the confirmation Steve needs—though he really didn’t need any at all.
“Jesus Christ, you’re really gone for her.”
Eddie looks around to make sure there’s no one close enough to hear his words. The last thing he needs is someone else learning about his shameful secret. “I really fucking am,” Eddie says. “Shit, I feel like I’m going crazy.”
Steve huffs a small laugh and shakes his head.
“She’s a good kid. Oop, sorry. I’ll choose my words more carefully.”
Steve winces when Eddie glares at him.
“She’s not a kid,” Eddie states.
“How old is she?”
“Twenty.”
Steve considers for a moment, and Eddie takes in every little minute detail of the expressions on his face.
“Holy shit, calm down, will you? I’m not judging you. Or her. I mean, Jesus, do you remember what I was like in high school?”
“Unfortunately.”
“I have no room to judge anyone. And besides, it’s not even that big of an age gap.”
“Twelve years,” Eddie says with a shrug. “And it’s not like she’s a teenager.”
“Yeah, I don’t know why, but something about that would make it seem weird. Never mind the difference is only a few months.”
“You’re not helping,” Eddie grits out.
Steve waves his hand in the air in a dismissive manner.
“I already said I’m not judging, damn. She seems pretty mature for her age, too.”
“She is.”
The smile on Eddie’s face warms Steve’s heart—not that he’d ever tell him that. But he’s watched his best friend deal with a shitty marriage for almost a decade now. The light in his eyes went out around the time Ryan was born, and Steve hasn’t seen it since. So Steve doesn’t care if this woman was eighteen or eighty, she made Eddie happy, and that’s something Steve worried he’d never see again.
“But you’re not fucking?” Steve asks just to clarify.
“No,” Eddie says, both of them picking up on the disappointment in his tone.
“Would you leave Brittany for her?”
And there it is. The question Eddie’s pondered on those nights when sleep just won’t find him and he’s staring at the ceiling fan spinning round. It’s all so much more complicated than just that simple question. But if Eddie can’t even come up with an answer to this, how would he be able to figure any of the other shit out? Thoughts of his sons and everything that would put them through go through his head, and he can’t bring himself to say he’d willingly inflict that kind of pain on them.
“I don’t know.”
Eddie’s voice is quiet, uncertain.
“Would you cheat on Brittany with her?”
This is another question that’s swirled around in Eddie’s head. One that’s much easier to answer, in his opinion.
“After she’s been cheating on me for more than half of our relationship? Hell yes.”
“You’d feel guilty, though.”
It’s not a question; Steve knows him.
Eddie sighs and throws the rag over his shoulder again. He kicks his scuffed boots against the floor of the garage and rests his hands on the open hood of the car.
“I think I’d get over it.”
“Oh, I know you would,” Steve says with a knowing smirk. “The minute you find out that she has feelings for you, too? Shit, you’re going to forget you even have a wife. And that’s not necessarily bad with you, honestly. Because in a lot of ways, you don’t have a wife. She’s not been a real partner for how long?”
Eddie scoffs. “Ever?”
Steve snorts a laugh in agreement.
“Man, I’m not telling you what to do…”
“But you are,” Eddie says with a smirk.
“Maybe,” Steve says with a shrug. “But go for it with the babysitter, yeah?”
Eddie sighs and shakes his head as he looks down into the engine bay of the car he’s supposed to be working on.
“You say that like she’ll want me.”
“Feel it out,” Steve suggests. “That’s what flirting is for, no? Not like you’re not already doing that.”
“What?” Eddie looks up at his friend in confusion.
Steve can’t help but let out a breathy chuckle and roll his eyes at how utterly oblivious his friend is.
“You’re shitting me, right? When you threw her in the pool?” Steve raises his eyebrows. When Eddie just continues to look confused, Steve rubs at his brow. “Wow. The way you held her and looked at her? You practically eye-fucked her.”
Eddie scoffs a laugh, and his cheeks turn red.
“What? No way.”
“Whatever man,” Steve says as he shakes his head in exasperation. “Here, just take this.”
Steve takes his hand out of his pocket and holds it out towards Eddie. The mechanic frowns in confusion and he extends his hand palm up. The foil of a condom falls against his dirty and greasy hand. Eddie’s eyes widen as he quickly shoves the small square in his pocket before someone else can see it.
“You think I don’t have these at home?” Eddie hisses.
“It’s been a minute,” Steve says, and Eddie doesn’t know if he’s kidding or not. “They’re probably expired.”
Eddie groans as he drops his head back.
“God, you might be right. They’re probably older than Luke.”
Steve would laugh if he didn’t think Eddie was serious.
“Better toss those so you don’t accidentally use one. The last thing you need is to knock up the babysitter.”
Instead of automatically agreeing like Steve assumed he would, Eddie chokes on his own saliva and avoids Steve’s eyes. He gets weirdly quiet before he sputters something about having to get back to work. The red face is enough of a clue for Steve, though; a clue he never wanted nor asked for.
“Alright,” Steve says with a nauseated expression on his face. “That’s a conversation for another day. After, like, five drinks.”

| Please be aware that manipulative people are really good at twisting the narrative to look good and make others look bad! They know their targets, can be two completely different people that you wouldn’t realise what goes on behind closed doors. Trigger warning: LENA!! |
Lena’s POV:
Vodka lemonade. Lena Marston’s drink of choice, a companion she’d kept since her teen years. Where John had whisky, she had vodka and a kid, you. She likes to think that she’s a decent mother, enough to prepare you for the bad people in this world. You’re resourceful, a tad hopeful but it always works in her favour. So desperate for love that you believe every word she coats with sugar and when she does snap, you’re reminded of the harsh reality. Lena’s a realist, taking things for what they are. Whereas you’re an idealist, hoping that those around you will change for the better. That your mother will stop drinking and choosing men over you. That your father will come back and make everything right. As if taking her youth wasn’t enough, you’re still causing trouble for her now.
She thought she raised you better, maybe you are your father’s daughter. Someone who thinks they can change the world. Nobody changes, it’s laughable to imagine John any different, but as he sits opposite her with a non-alcoholic drink she can’t help, but laugh.
It’s been years since Lena’s seen John, a few phone calls here and there to lay the foundations. To complain about you, ask John when he’s going to pick his daughter up and have a word. Such an ungrateful girl. John’s age hasn’t ruined his looks, a head full of thick hair and beard. Doesn’t have to cover the grey hairs, dye his roots every month to appear younger. He’s not the one carrying stretch marks on his stomach or a scar from birthing you.
“Well how’s the wife, John? The boy…you always wanted a boy,” Lena asks, swirling the vodka around in her glass, ice cubes clinking together. She can’t remember the kids age or name and doesn’t care much to be honest. She’s thankful that she never had another.
John nods, “yep, all good. A three year old girl too.” His fingers drum against the table, sipping his beer without breaking eye connect with Lena.
Oh, that must ruin you. No longer daddy’s little girl and now you see John being the present dad that you’d only dreamt of growing up with. Another fantasy Lena told you to let go of years ago. Dreams don’t come true for girls like you.
He's not bothered to shred his jacket or remove the knitted scarf around his neck. Still the same man, gaze trailing Lena's features for any tells. John always reading too much into things or people and getting lost in the tiny details. Trying to connect them, losing the bigger picture completely. Not everything has to be so complex.
"You took money from our kid?"
And there it is…
Lena scoffs, “my kid, John. Ain’t seen you raising her.” She slams the glass to the table and points to her chest, sharp red nails jabbing herself and reminding him that she was there, not him. He’s always been too proud, wanting to be seen as a good and decent man. And in some ways maybe he is.
John leans back in his chair, gaze on his beer as if he wondering if it’s half full or half empty. There’s no way you’ve told him, he’d probably be less calm now than if you had. No, he doesn’t know everything and as per usual you’ve made it too easy for Lena. She’d thank you, but she doesn’t want to ruin the surprise. That or let you craft an excuse or hint at the truth.
“She didn’t tell ya? Of course she wouldn’t,” Lena chuckles, chasing the last remnants of her drink, vodka and lemon not as strong with the melting ice. “That ungrateful little shit stole that money from me, the last time she went back to him.” She sniffs, back of her hand swiping her nose. Her eyes sting, lashes clumping with tears and she feels the weight of John’s hand on top of hers. A heaviness she hasn’t had in years, but she’s laying the foundations. Dropping little pieces for John to pick up, make him overthink and draw his own conclusions. Anything to get him off her back.
His thumb brushes over her knuckles, light and soothing. “I didn’t know,” John says and Lena dares to glance up at him, his hand retreating back to his lap.
Phase one, plant a seed of doubt. Turn a bad thing sour. The moneys technically hers anyways, for all those years she had to raise you on her own. It’s not easy bringing a kid up without a father or the usual bricks and mortar. Half the time you were the reason Lena had to pack up her life again and search for the next place to settle. And as you grew older she noticed the way men’s eyes lingered on you instead of her. You were the one picking her up off the floor though, dragging her into the shower and sobering her up. You looked after her better than any man had and she wondered where you’d learnt that from. It wasn’t her, maybe that’s why Lena can’t stand you. She’s never been cut out to be a mother, didn’t have one like that either. So, how can you care for her better than she can?
Sometimes she sees her younger self in you and it twists her insides. A poison that coats the back of her throat, weighing on her tongue that she resorts to unleashing that venom on you. Lena tries not to think of being a teen with a toddler, lying on a mattress as you scream a fever. She can still hear those cries in the depths of a night terror, because to her you were a terror. No life and isolated from everything she once knew. The week days merging together till John called on a Saturday or Sunday, offering Lena a piece of her old self. His money the one thing giving her life.
Your teen years are what she loathed most. Lena refused to get you certain clothes, bought you a size too big so it swamped your body and said it would save her money in the long run. You are your mother’s daughter after all, she doesn’t want to compliment or encourage you in fear you’ll do better than her. There’s that spec of your father though, the spark of fire you strike back whenever one of her boyfriends tried to lay down the law. Never did learn.
“Fancy a smoke?” Lena asks, pulling a pack menthol cigarettes from her handbag. She slings her coat over her shoulders and smiles as John nods.
Another distraction, a break between the forced conversation and Lena wonders if you’d smell the lingering scent when John gets home. It’s distinct, something you despised.
The rain pelts on the awning outside the pub, wind whipping through the patio and Lena wades through the tables to heater. A warm orange glow illuminating above johns head as he stands in front of her and lights her cigarette, he reluctantly accepts one of her menthol ones, sparking the end alight with hers. He hates the smell of mint and tobacco merged, but Lena knows he’s too stressed not to smoke. His fingers have been twitching against his pint glass since he sat down an hour ago.
If he wasn’t married and loyal like a dog, she’d probably sleep with him. Anything to get him off her back. You’d definitely leave if you knew she’d had her claws back in him. The one scrap of hope you hold onto, John.
John exhales a cloud of smoke, head tilted as he watches the wind carry the fog away. “How much?” He asks, turning the cigarette in his hold.
“Don’t matter, we sorted it out. She’s an adult now John, needs to learn there’s consequences. Lord knows she should’ve learnt ‘em six bloody years ago,” Lena says, flicking her ash into the nearest tray on the table. She glances to John out of the corner of her eye, the muscle in his jaw flexing at the mention of six years ago. A testy subject for all involved, especially you. A turning point that solidified your hatred for John.
“Spit it out Lena,” he snaps, never one to beat around the bush with her. Hook-line and sinker. “You and her are always dangling that in my face, but I’m yet to be told what actually happened.” His nose wrinkles as he takes another drag of his cigarette, eyes narrowed at Lena.
His gaze doesn’t waver from her face, she’s not even sure he’s breathing as he waits for the verbal blow. Ash burning his fingers. He doesn’t want to miss anything.
“You really wanna know your kid?” Lena cocks her to the side, arched brow rising. He nods, crushing the cigarette under his boot. “She was arrested for the possession of drugs at fifteen, John. Went to a young offenders institute for months until I managed to get the charges dropped.”
John opens his mouth, but she waves him off. She relays the details, telling him of that night and the months that followed, answering his questions in between. Exaggerating certain parts to prove a point, that you’re not the good kid he thinks you are.
“That boyfriend of hers, you can thank him. She gave me hell for years John, I don’t blame you. I know you were working that huge case and couldn’t be home, but I did my best,” she says, wiping the salty tears rolling down her cheeks and leaning into john’s embrace as he wraps an arm around her. Too easy.
"I'm here now, let me help," he says, palm smoothing up and down her arm. She tucks her head under his chin and wraps her arms around his torso. It’s like she’s a teen again, clinging to John for warmth.
Lena releases a trembling breath. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s still using. You know those mood swings and lashing out,” she mumbles into his chest. He tenses, slipping out of her hold and stepping back.
“What really happened between the two of you?” He asks, leaning down to try and catch her wandering gaze. “Kid, can’t even talk about ya’ without…”
“She’ll bleed you dry John and be gone before you realise,” Lena’s voice muffled, cigarette balancing between her lips as she dug through her handbag. “Your kids actual phone number, she’s got two.” She hands him a faded receipt, blue ink smeared on the crumpled paper.
Tumblr media
John’s POV:
John thought if he saw Lena face to face he’d know, some sort of gut instinct to untangle the mess in his head. Dad intuition or whatever it’s called, but he doesn’t have that with you not yet. If anything, all he’s sees in Lena is you. You can’t be doing drugs, he checked your bag whilst you were in the hospital and if you had Toff would have added it to your medical notes. The mood swings, John knows are more trauma related. If Lena is lying what does she gain from doing so?
The smudged ink of your second phone number burns a hole in his pocket. Already stored in his contacts list just incase. He’s not going to bring it up with you either, knowing you’ll get rid of it and he won’t be able to reach you one day.
The mist of rain blurs John’s surroundings outside his truck. Window cracked open a fraction as he tries to get rid of the fogged up glass, old heater ticking away. Your bedroom light is still on, but John doesn’t want to enter the res house, not till he’s got his head sorted and he’s prepared. The last thing he wants it to scare or push you away. He knows if he reaches out too fast and close, you’ll withdraw. Maybe even leave him and never look back. Part of him doesn’t want to dig up that police report, it’s probably been cleared off your record by now as you were a minor and the charges were dropped. Doesn’t mean he’s not thinking about it though. His stomach twisting as he realises how alone you must have felt and he now understands why you think he wasn’t there for you. He knows he wasn’t there.
Lena’s minty scent clings to his clothes, he can smell it on his moustache and fingertips. The alcohol gel in his car not giving him much help, if anything he doesn’t even think it has a particular aroma to it. He curses himself for leaving his cigars back in his office, locked away in the top drawer. Meeting Lena wasn’t planned, the whole evening throwing him off as he sat in his truck at three in the morning. The missed calls on his phones unanswered, he’d warned Angie of that though and wasn’t expecting her to ring anytime soon. No, Simon’s number appears in the chain of notifications, on and off for the past two hours. A text of his return soon, always giving him an estimated arrival.
The next op isn’t his main worry though, but it should be. He hates to think it. There’s a niggling feeling that if John goes away now, you might not be home when he returns. The thought alone making him not want to have the have the talk. He has to though. A light tap against the glass draws him out of his thoughts and he rolls the window down. One skeleton gloved hand rests against the truck as Simon leans down to greet John.
“Work or the kid?” Simon asks, his gaze flitting to the line settling between johns brows as if he already knows. He wrinkles his nose, swaying in his spot as if the stench of minted tobacco has just invaded the thin layer of his mask. The cheapest cigarettes that are supposed to be left on the shelves, well that’s what Simon says.
John nudges his head to the passenger seat, watching Simon circle the truck and open the door. The old vehicle rocking as he fell into the seat and closed the door lightly. John’s lost count of how many times he’s had to fit the handle back on whenever Simon slams the door. The engine sputters to life and they don’t say anything till they’re out of the military base. Nothing but the open road and the darkness wrapping around them.
“Went to see Lena,” John says, the red light glaring at him and he slams the brakes, both of them lurching forward in their seats.
“And you came back with more questions than answers?” Simon replies, raising a blond brow at the captain. He’s never been a fan of John’s ex.
John fills him on the evening and everything Lena told him. Simon silent, nodding along as he listened. John can’t help, but see you in another light now and he tells Simon so. His mind wandering back to the shattered lamp, did you knock it off or break it? He knows you’re lying about your mum and he hopes you’ll pluck up the courage to confide in him. He doesn’t even want to go into the whole Johnny and you situation with Simon, he’s not ready for that yet. The one thing he definitely has to pull you up on.
“I just don’t know what to think,” John mumbles, fingers pressing against his temple and the dull pulsating ache. The past few weeks were weighing on him, work escalating and your unpredictable moods around him made him try ten times harder to accommodate your needs. Lowering his voice, stepping back and offering you more space in hopes you’ll come to him. He can’t keep saying later with you. He’s running out of time.
“She’s gotta have a reason to lie,” Simon pauses, holding a hand up and silencing John before he can offer his thoughts. “Think about it, she’s not had a stable upbringing and well, you don’t know the full story. You need to talk to the kid before you jump to conclusions.”
John nods, looping back round the streets and driving to the military base. The back of his throat burns, mouth dry as Simon’s words sink in. He doesn’t have all the information and you deserve to be heard. He owes you that much.
The truck rolls to a stop outside the res house, the light from your bedroom off. John removes the keys and holds them in his palm, elbow on the door panel. Simon exits the truck, walking round to johns side and he reaches over the door and pops the handle down opening it for him.
“Take a breather, then talk to her. It’s all fresh and amplified mate, just don’t interrogate the kid. With the right questions you’ll be able to figure out the situation.” Simon nods, advice given and he disappears down the gravel path to the main building without another glance.
John's lucky to get two hours sleep, giving up as soon as the sunlight filters through the blinds. He makes his bed as usual, tucking the sheets under the mattress and sits on the edge. His suitcase stares at him beside the chest of drawers, his fingers turning his wedding band deep in thought. He glances to the clock reading seven forty and he rises from the bed, pulling his door open.
He walks into your room, expecting the the door handle to rattle and the lock to click, but it swept wide open.
“Come on, up you get Kiddo,” John says, tugging the duvet off you. “You’re coming home with me, no discussion.” He tosses the flimsy duffle on your bed, pulling your clothes from the hangers in the wardrobe.
You catch the hoody he throws at you, mumbling under your breath as you shove it over your head and accept your fate. He thought you'd fight him on it, but he doesn't give you the chance to.

i’ve debated on entering this ongoing fandom etiquette conversation because, generally, i don’t think i’m articulate or groundbreaking enough to say something that someone else hasn’t already said… and i may very well regret this but …
when it comes to fic comments:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
do this ^^^ not that ^^^^
i received both of these over the weekend by first time commenters on my most popular (and personally beloved) wip that is currently in the throes of a year long hiatus. i won’t get into the in-depth reasons as to why its been on hold because im not asking for pity or sympathy or whatever (the ao3 curse is real) but i am posting this because one of these comments made me want to immediately pick up my drafted chapter 20 and finish it. while the other one made me want to bury my draft in my google drive and never look at it again.
this is a familiar tale, right?? lots of fic writers have exhausted the topic of super motivating and less than motivating types of comments. but i just wanted to add context to why.
first of all, because this is my first impression of both of these readers. one is fresh and exiting and positive! the other is completely disheartening, but why?? because if we infer through the subtext of the second comment that this person is supposedly a long time reader, this is the first time they’ve chosen to interact with me. at all. so my gut reaction is “wtf, i don’t know you, what makes you think you can talk to me like this or that you are entitled to that type of information if you’ve never felt the need to tell me you liked my fic before this??”
not a great feeling tbh! to immediately dislike someone upon first impression? i kinda wanted to block them so they’d never get to read the rest when i do end up finishing the story. because i WILL finish it someday.
but SECONDLY, and this is the part that made me want to put the next chapter away forever, the blunt question of “WHY ARENT YOU POSTING 🤬” literally has the direct response of me reflecting on the shitstorm of a year i’ve had and the four addresses in twelve months, and the fights with my partner that never seem to get resolved, and my daughters health issues and her two hospital stays, and my own career upheaval and how i’m still not really in a job i truly love or feel invested in, and just SHIT!! you know?? sometimes life is shit and hobbies get put on the back burner. i don’t know how else to say this but if you are wanting an update to your favorite fic, be kind!? you don’t know what’s going on in a persons internal life so why wouldn’t you choose to be nice??
no one loves the path from you more than i do, or wants me to finish it mORE THAN I DO!!! you should assume this of every fic writer! those stories mean more to them than any reader or beta. i promise you. and having to reflect on all the conscious and subconscious reasons why i haven’t been able to work on it just makes me more disappointed in myself, which makes me not want to work on it more… and the vicious cycle continues.
so, in conclusion, that second comment up there is not something i would ever expect a person to say in such words or tone if they stopped me on the street so it should never show up in my email either.
a good rule of thumb is: comment like you just ran into the fic writer in the grocery store <3

Could you write something about Mari shyly asking if she could get a Luke skywalker action figure cause she saw that Mel got a Darth Vader action figure as a reward. Van and Tai were at first very skeptical thinking maybe she was asking as a new way to tease Mel but no she just secretly loves Star Wars. And absolutely lights up when they (hesitantly) agree to get it for her.
(I am pushing my silly little ‘Mari is actually a secret nerd’ agenda)
I Choose Luke - Little!Mari
Summary: As detailed above! Mari badly wants a Luke Skywalker action figure, but is met with a bit of skepticism. Turns out, she just loves Star Wars.
Mari had been inching closer and closer to Van ever so slowly, trying to make her approach seem casual. Van was pretending not to notice the girl staring at her and taking a few steps closer at a time, wanting to see how this was going to play out. Finally, Mari gave up the act of casually getting Van's attention and threw herself down on the couch next to her.
"Oh, hey, kiddo!" Van greeted, enthusiastically. "Where'd you come from?"
The look she got in return was disbelieving.
"I was right there," Mari replied, pointing a few feet away.
"I didn't even notice," Van said drily.
Mari huffed but waved a hand between them dismissively.
"I have a question," she stated. Van nodded encouragingly. Mari took a deep breath before speaking again. "I want a new toy."
"You've got an allowance, don't you?"
"No!" Mari cried, crossing her arms. "You know that."
"Alright, alright, sorry, kid," Van relented. "Done with the jokes."
"You know how I've been so good about not getting into fights with Shauna?" Mari asked.
Van considered this. Mari had, by all accounts, been unusually well behaved in the past week. She'd gotten into no more than two minor disputes with Gen, hadn't said a mean word when Misty came home drenched by the rain, done all her chores without being asked, and taken care of Akilah for a whole day without complaining about it once. And, as she'd claimed, she hadn't gotten into any fights with Shauna—not even when the other girl had nicked a few of Mari's barbies to use in her reenactment of the Titanic.
"You have been quite good about that, Mar," she agreed. Mari's face lit up and she nodded eagerly, leaning a little closer to Van in her excitement.
"And you know how you got Mel something for getting her cast off without throwing a fit?"
Van nodded. They had gotten Mel something for getting her cast off without throwing a fit, as had been frantically promised by Tai when Mel burst into tears upon being told she would have to go back to the hospital in a week to get her cast off. She'd very carefully picked out a Darth Vader action figure, holding up proudly to Van once she'd made her selection. Mel had been in a bit of a Star Wars phase and had been wearing the same Stormtrooper-emblazoned hat every day for more than a month.
"We did do that, yeah."
"So, I was thinking maybe I could get something too if I keep not fighting with Shauna," Mari mumbled, suddenly shy as she looked down at her lap.
Van smiled, reaching out to tip Mari's chin up. She didn't think Tai would mind if she agreed without consulting her.
"That sounds like a great plan, bub," she said. "If you can give me one more week without fighting, we'll go to the store, okay?"
The ultimatum motivated Mari so much over the next week that she strayed into absurdity—avoiding Shauna at all costs, which Tai quickly put a stop to when she realized and explained to Mari that while she was glad she was taking it so seriously, avoiding Shauna was probably more likely to end in a fight than just being nice.
Despite one minor spat, Tai and Van decided at the end of the week that Mari had done well enough to earn her reward. Mari was thrumming with quiet excitement as they buckled her into the car, kicking her feet happily as they made the trip to the store. She was so excited that she didn't say a word as they arrived, letting Van and Tai follow her into a toy aisle as she weaved through the store with expert precision.
She picked something up off a shelf and turned back to them.
"Done," she murmured. Tai blinked as Van hide a chuckle behind her hand. They'd been expecting as least twenty minutes of back-and-forth alongside multiple requests to go to a different store or to type something into Google to see if there was a better version of a toy.
"What've you got, honey?" Tai asked.
Mari bit her lip before revealing the toy from behind her back.
"Luke," she whispered.
Van winced, knowing immediately that they were gonna have to vet the pick before they allowed her to take it home.
"Why Luke, Mar?" She asked gently, trying not to seem too accusatory. It just seemed a little too opportune with Mel's new Darth Vader figure. Mari was clever—she could find a way to use the toy to taunt Mel in some way.
Mari looked a little confused at the question.
"Because," she said matter-of-factly, "he's a Jedi and he's the best fighter of all of them. Even better than Obi-Wan."
Van had to hide her face behind her hand again, so endeared by the answer that she could barely keep from laughing. Now that she was thinking about it, Mari had been present at every single one of Mel's Star Wars movie nights. She kept pretending her bike helmet was a Stormtrooper helmet and she'd gotten into a row with Mel about which lightsaber color she would have if she were a Jedi. She'd even begged for a copy of the Lego Star Wars game for the Nintendo, which Van had barely thought twice about because of course Mari wanted that one—it was the third coolest one.
"I think she's serious, Tai," she murmured. Tai nodded slowly, still a little skeptical.
"What are you gonna do with Luke?"
Mari shrugged. "Make him fight my Barbies. Fly an X-wing. Maybe get stranded in the freezer. Dunno yet, really."
Tai's face melted into a smile and she nodded.
"Alright, Mar. Let's pay and get you home, then."
She bounced up on her toes, grinning happily as she reluctantly handed the toy over to Tai so she could pay for it while her and Van looked at the trading cards by the register. Once paid, she reached for it again and kept it held closely against her side the entire ride home, sprinting into the house once they'd arrived to find Mel.
"Look, Mel, look!" She cried, skidding into the kitchen.
"Shoes!" Tai reminded, shucking her coat off. Mari toed them off where she was standing, leaving them in the middle of the floor as she and Mel took off to get her Darth Vader figure to play with. She hadn't even taken Luke out of the packaging yet.
Van went over to pick up the shoes, returning Tai's eyebrow raise with a smile and a shrug.
"Aw, c'mon, she's so excited. She wasn't trying to be a pain. You'd let me get away with it," she defended, watching a Tai's mouth twisted into a smile.
"I would," she hummed.
Mari came sliding back into the kitchen, breathless and brandishing her toy with Mel close behind her.
"Can you help us open this, please?" She asked sweetly. Tai grabbed a scissors from a drawer, carefully extracting the toy from the plastic as Mari and Mel watched, tense with anticipation.
"There you go," she said, handing Mari the toy. Mel squealed and immediately ran into the other room, but Mari hesitated by Tai's side for a long moment.
"Um, thank you for the toy," she rushed out, cheeks flushing as she gave Tai a quick hug, doing the same to Van before she hurried after Mel.
"Too cute," Van mused, shaking her head, "too cute."
I never know how to end these. Hope you enjoy, anon, sorry for the bit of a wait!

you know for someone who loves metamy so much. i gotta say having it be fully unrequited is honestly fitting with metal's whole arc (or rather his LACK of arc)
he wants what he can't have. he's not anything or anyone, he doesn't deserve it. what would he even do with it?
"i don't think i have anything. i don't think i can have anything. i don't know how to have something." (src: 17776)
whether or not you subscribe to the roboticized metal theory, it doesn't change that metal's goals are not aligned with reality. ironically it's the robot that is unable to logically analyze his situation. he wants to be sonic but it doesn't change the fact that he isn't. he wants to win but it doesn't change the fact that he won't. his desires are narratively and morally unfulfillable because what he wants is wrong (factually and ethically.)
and so if he, in theory, wanted amy rose how could he ever actually have her?
the most she would give him is "you're more like him than i thought."
because he's Not sonic. all he can be is sufficiently Like him (sometimes). whatever metal claims he is (and honestly whatever he ACTUALLY is) is irrelevant because he can't MAKE himself sonic. he can't make himself the version of sonic that amy loves. amy loves sonic for WHAT he is (good) not what he's named. the most she could ever do is passively appreciate the traits of sonic that metal is able to imitate. emulate. simulate. fabricate.
sonic's role (in the meta story and in-universe) is so unique and treasured and irreplaceable. the only way to kick him out would be to, idk, replace him with an identical copy and put the old sonic in a lose-lose situation where he could not possibly be believed or sympathized with. or something.
say he gets "rehabilitated," rebels against eggman... you know those metamy fics. what is he then?
-> another job well done. another good deed for team sonic (y'know, the real one).
because it's not just that he's Not Sonic. (and he isn't. even if you believe he once was, he's not anymore in any way that is relevant to the narrative. the narrative, as you know, is the real sonic's pov.) it's that he's not even really a person anymore.
he's been forcibly depersonalized, dethroned, removed from his role (+ promptly replaced with something canonically better!) and isolated from any semblance of humanization. he doesn't even have a mouth. either it was taken from him or he was never given one. and we are not given any glimpse into his thoughts. (they're not important.)
like. this is a dead end. he is a dead end. there's nowhere to run.
he won't "get the girl" (pardon the term) not because he's evil not because he's not sonic but because he is not a "person" in any sense. not literally not socially not narratively not practically not really
idk. whether metal falls in love with amy genuinely, or if it's just out of jealousy/desire to want what the real sonic has/instinct to emulate the real sonic's emotions... it's doomed. he's just a ghost from a doomed timeline and everything he will ever do is destined to fail. he can't kill sonic. he can't hold amy's hand. he can't do anything but lose.
in that sense, metal "losing" amy to the real sonic (as if metal was ever even a contender, as if he was ever real enough) is just another failure in a long, long string of mostly unpleasant memories of a character who doesn't even get to go by his real name. because someone more important took it already has it.
#all of this to say. amy not returning metal's feelings is just more proof that he's not sonic. that no one sees him as sonic. it fits ithink#sonic#sonic the hedgehog#metal sonic#metamy#.txt#either way metal is just such a tragic character. so filled with jealousy and hate and rage. and such such such grief and loneliness.#i think if i had to pick a word for how i (am choosing to LOL) interpret his themes... disconnection. -> from self from society from morals#you can't just give me a character whose name is stolen and whose body is transformed against his will. whose identity is destroyed.#who has a fascinating (and surprisingly positive?!) dynamic with his replacement's (+ his own!) love interest...#and not let me use her as a weapon to really hammer in the fact that he is Alone. he's not even from this universe.#and all his friends are dead. and he should be too but he's not. he's something worse.#i just realized. 'hammer in the fact' get it cuz amy has a hammer lol. lol. lol#amy looooves sonic. she adores him. she doesnt love metal. the only conclusion is that he must not be sonic.#but he is but he is but he is but he is BUT--#but but but.#ahh#anyway ive been doodling more metamy. got a few more sketches i gotta line.#and a fun tails and nine piece too :) if i learn hwo to Actually draw properly like a real person.. one day i can line it right#btw if this is super dramatic and noncanon. let me frolic in my angst. im using metal and amy as dolls here. let me . thankyou#ok its4am now lolsiesssss

The Tale of Feathers Scorched Black
[Wanted to write a loose retelling of Swan Lake with gemtale! Odette belongs to @gilfodile ! Also, for the dialogue parts, the first dialogue always belongs to Odile while the second always belongs to Odette!]
Fairytales are straightforward stories. It begins, once upon a time, there lived a princess cursed by another or trapped in a tower, then came a prince on a white horse or a knight in shining armour, and so it ends, a happily ever after.
And thus, we start again. Once upon a time, there lived a lone white swan.
“I must say, your understanding of that subject is greatly lacking.”
Then the lone white swan met a black swan.
“Ohhh? Enlighten me then, O' great philosopher.”
The two were like oil and water.
“You should brush up on the basics.” “Perhaps you'd like to join me then, what with your lacking of the fundamentals after all.”
Like the mountains and the oceans.
“HAH! I never took you for one to consider Clement's model on Craft Theory.” “I just so happen to have a strict critic with questionable tastes.”
The sun and the moon.
“What outdated articles… You are aware there are newer articles in regards to such theories with deeper understanding of them now, right?” “Well, now I do! Care to impart such enlightenment to me?”
Yet the two grew closer with one another.
“You're quite lacking on the understanding of that subject, aren't you? O' great philosopher.” “What thievery to use my own nickname for you towards me, haha!”
With the harmony of balance between the oil that sits atop the water, of the boundary between the ocean and the shore, of the night and the day. The white swan was lonely no more with the black swan to accompany her. Until…
“I'll be leaving tomorrow.” “That's rather abrupt, where are you going?” “Just… anywhere. I've been thinking about it for a few days now. I'd like to travel, outside of Ka Bue.” “Haha! How kind of you to give me your farewells in advance then!” “Hm, wouldn't want you feeling lost without me. HAH! Do take care not to miss me so much.” “Ohhh really now? Shouldn't that be my line, O' great philosopher? I wouldn't want you feeling so lonely without my company.”
The black swan left the next day, without much of a farewell nor a look back. It wasn't at all necessary anymore when her farewells were spoken a day before, it wasn't at all needed to look back on a country she will one day return to. It wasn't at all required of her, when no one will be there to receive her farewells or to see her wave goodbye. The white swan wasn't around to watch her leave.
The white swan was busy, the white swan was lonely. The white swan was cursed, condemned to the lake that is Ka Bue. She was missing something, a piece of her identity, a section of her memory. She looked down one day and saw white feathers on the hands that can vaguely remember the warmth of a father. Her wings were clipped and she can no longer fly unless she regains what she lost.
And so she searched and searched and searched. The lone white swan with wings clipped and feathers in disarray, could only grasp sand slipping through her hold. Until she met her other half, a black swan meant to only rival her. It was annoying, it was frustrating, it was irritating, and yet above all, it was comforting. The comfort of a companion, the safety of a friend, the warmth of a rival. The black swan was her polar opposite and yet they were in harmony. They were in harmony, and yet without the other, it had grown dissonant.
Fairytales are straightforward stories. It begins, once upon a time, there lived a lone white swan condemned to a lake. Nary a prince nor a knight came, and so it ends. However, the lone white swan still had someone else, her rival with the darkness of the night painting her feathers. The black swan meant to only rival her, became her companion, and her friend. And it was enough for the white swan.
The lone white swan had someone to accompany her. The white swan had someone to share her warmth with. The princess had someone to call her friend. The young lady had someone to care for. Odette had someone to be with.
She had someone.
And yet, Odette was left behind. And yet, the young lady walked the familiar paths alone. And yet, the princess' heart aches from a vacant space. And yet, the white swan's side lacked a familiar warmth. And yet, the lone white swan had no one else to accompany her again.
O' white swan, where have your other half gone? “It's okay.” O' princess, what have your crown become? “I'm sure she's having fun.” O' young lady, why have you spent your days alone? “I can always send her a letter anyway.” O' Odette, where have your Odile gone? “…But where is she right now?”
Fairytales are straightforward stories. This begins, once upon a time,
a lone white swan,
flew too close to the sun,
her wings that had found its will to fly,
flew up, up, and up, towards a bright light,
it was annoying, it was frustrating, it was irritating, and yet above all, it was comforting.
The comfort of a companion, the warmth of a rival, and the danger of wanting more.
She looked down one day and saw her white feathers scorched black.
And so it ends, with nary a happily ever after.
And thus,
we
start
again.

clan head! satoru who's utterly infatuated with his maid, you.
he can't help himself around you, he really can't — all he's able to do is let his eyes rake over your form before he drops some stupid pick up line that somehow has you a blushing mess.
he loves you — not just for a fling or any of that, no. he really loves you, like, if you asked him to do a backflip while jumping off of a cliff, he'd do it. it was that type of love.
he was shameless about the liking he had taken to you, often flirting with you, making it clear that you were his favourite and ‘accidentally’ brushing up against you.
it wasn't until a few months ago that he decided to make you his personal maid — no one else got to see him up close but you. food? you brought it to him and then he'd order you to eat with him. beverages? he often made you share drinks with him. showering? you were the one that ran his baths and would massage his shoulders before them.
at this point, infatuated became an understatement — this man was totally head over heels for you.
“i want to marry you.” he tells you suddenly as you're serving him dinner.
your eyes widen with shock, “w-what?” you stammer.
“i said i wanna marry you,” he says casually, enjoying the blush that spreads on your cheeks.
you chuckle nervously, “nice joke, sir.”
he rolls his eyes playfully, “what did we say about ‘sir'? you don't get to call me that, it's satoru to you.”
your blush deepens, “right. uhm, you…you want to marry me?”
“i need to marry you.” he says, his voice serious and you chuckle nervously again.
“uhm….satoru, are you drunk?” you ask shyly.
he grins, “couldn't have been more sober.”
“right.” you hum, drawing out the word as you fiddle with your fingers, “well, i think you need to sleep then.”
“y/n.” he says, his voice soft yet firm, “i’m being serious here.”
at this point, you avert your eyes away from his, you couldn't stand the intensity of his gaze and you laugh awkwardly, “satoru, you know that…that can't happen.”
“why not?” he asks with a scowl and you shake your head.
“it's…inappropriate — i'm your maid, i am by no means someone you should court.” you tell him, your voice soft and quiet — albeit, you wanted nothing more than to be courted by him, you knew that someone of your status could never be with someone of his.
“i'm clan head.” he says firmly, “i get to choose who i want to marry — whether it's appropriate in their eyes or not, and i want to marry you.”
“but —” “no buts.”
he stands up and takes your hands in his, “i want to marry you, i love you.”
your eyes widen with disbelief, you couldn't believe what you were hearing.
“oh my god.” you utter out, still in shock as he grins, “so, is that a yes?”
you manage to let out a heartfelt laugh, “yes! oh my god, of course yes.”
and that's how you ended up marrying the ever so infamous, satoru gojo.

BACK TO YOU — JINU ࣪ 𖤐.ᐟ
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: he comes back home. to you.
content: fem!reader, angst, happy ending, a kiss, ~800 words, i dont really know what to feel abt this but lmk what you think!
a/n: he lives!!!!! (i yelled as they dragged me inside the asylum)
★☆ ★
Heart heavy. Eyes puffy. Mind foggy.
Why did you decide to get attached to a demon in the first place?
Sucks on you.
The air in your apartment was chilling, making you fall farther back into your mattress. Blanket covering your body as you stare at your ceiling.
The girls have come knocking, wanting to make sure you’re still alive because of how long you were cooped up.
You couldn’t bring yourself to do anything after the incident.
Part of you almost feels stupid, how are you letting his death affect you so much? You haven’t even known him for that long.
“Then, why does it hurt so bad?” you whispered to yourself, tears streaming down your puffy cheeks.
Suddenly, the sliding door to your balcony opened, adding the cold wind sweep across your room. You startled awake, rubbing your eyes to get your vision in focus as you walked to the balcony. The city looks almost ethereal with the golden honmoon.
Your body jumps in shock when you notice the huge pair of bright eyes staring at you. “Tiggy?” crouching down, the tiger slowly moved closer, snuggling closer to your hand and chest, “What are you doing here baby?”
“Why? A guy can’t see a pretty girl anymore?”
Your heart drops. Fingers stopping scratches on the tiger’s head, not brave enough to look up.
His voice. No. No way. Your head is playing tricks.
Shaking your head, you muttered to yourself, “Nope. No. I’m just dreaming.” hiding your face in the tiger’s fluffy fur, “This is so not funny.”
Jinu’s chest clenched at your voice, taking slow steps until he is crouched in front of you, “Hi, sweetheart.”
You blinked your tears away, hugging the tiger tighter, “Go away.” voice so fragile, so tired.
The man leaned forward, his hesitating hand hovering above your head. “Hey, look at me.” slowly dropping his hand to the back of your neck as his thumb grazed your skin comfortingly.
You shook your head, “You’re not real.”
His eyes softens, realising how much pain you are in, “Yes I am. I’m right here.”
With all the courage that you possess, you brought your head up. He’s right.
He is right here.
Right in front of you.
He smiles warmly, gazing at your face, “Oh, princess.” he brings his palm to the side of your face, heart clenching when he notices your tear streaks, puffy eyes and runny nose.
You sniffle, leaning into his warm palm, “I miss you so much.” a pout forming on your lips.
Jinu has to stop himself from grinning at how cute you looked, choosing to peck your cheeks instead, “Missed you too.”
A moment passed by as you stared at each other. Before the whole situation crashes on you fully, anger and grief overcome your system.
Everything was so overwhelming.
Shoving his shoulders back, “Where the hell did you go?” you yelled, standing up and stomping inside your bedroom. Picking up the pile of clothes on the floor and putting them inside of your wardrobe.
He didn’t even move when you pushed him. He understood. He would be in pain too.
He sighed. You took a deep breath, trying to calm your racing heart.
“I had to take care of some stuff before I can see you.” carefully moving into your room, he surveyed the mountain tissues on the side of your bed, “You really missed me, huh?”
You scoff, “Shut up.” stumbling when the tiger tried to cuddle to your leg, making you smile.
Jinu softly grins at the sight of you, nose still red and sniffling, hoodie engulfing your figure. You look soft, sweet, vulnerable.
He stops right behind you, body so close you can feel how warm he is, “I miss you too.” he whispers.
Letting out a shaky breath and biting your lip in nervousness, you slowly turned around and looked up to meet his eyes,
“There’s my girl.” he smiles, rough fingers caressing your cheek.
“I never want to feel like that ever again.” you lean into his warm palm, holding his wrist.
He leans in, your breaths mingling with each other, “May I?” his thumb not stopping grazing your cheek.
You nod, letting him lean down to slot your lips together. The kiss was slow, calming your screaming thoughts, as you scrunch his jacket in your hands.
“Fuck.” he whispers against your mouth, moving more desperate, his hands moving to grip your waist to bring you closer. “Missed you so much, sweetheart.”
Giggling, you break apart to take in more breaths, hands now on the back of his neck, fingers grazing his skin making him shudder. “I might go on a wim and say that you missed me.”
He laughs and kisses your forehead, pulling your head to rest against his chest and hugging you as he lays his head on top of your head.
For a demon he has a really loud heartbeat.
“Your heart is beating so fast.” you chuckled, wrapping your arms around him, fully melting into his embrace.
Jinu’s cheeks went warm, he coughs, “Shut up.” backing away and meeting your eyes again, “I’m not going anywhere.” a pause, “Promise.”
“You better not.” you shove his shoulder.
He laughs, pulling you closer.
“I’m home, already.”

domesticated | nanami kento ╰►nanami was born to be a husband—measured, attentive, impossibly good with his hands—but more than that, he was born to be your husband. he keeps a bullet journal, folds your laundry with surgical precision, and makes you tea just the way you like it. and as sure as you are that he’s perfect, he’s still determined to prove it to you, every single day. 7.3k words
a/n: a couple nights ago, I plagued my dash with thoughts of housewife!nanami and I will continue to do so forever and ever. if there are no nanami stans, I'm dead...but who am I kidding, there will always be nanami stans. gonna have to fight all of you for my man :[ also I'm thinking of doing a part two to this.....maybe like a sunday type vibe where reader has the day off....let me know your thoughts on that. warnings: embarrassing amounts of fluff, kissing, cussing, brief allusions to sex.
Tumblr media
the alarm goes off at 6:00 a.m. sharp. it always does. nanami never changed it, never wanted to. that hour—early, quiet, untouched—was his. a small thing, a leftover ritual from a life that used to feel like it belonged to someone else. once, it meant gritting his teeth, dragging himself into suits and subways and glass towers built by people who didn’t even know his name. another day. another spreadsheet. another serving of silent resignation to a world that didn’t care. it’s hard to believe he lived like that. harder still to believe he accepted it.
he doesn’t like to think much about the man he used to be before he met you. it’s not that he’s ashamed—he knows those years carved him into the man he is now. and now, well...now he’s yours. and that changes everything. because back then he was exhausted. hollowed out. sore in places he didn’t know could ache. and now...
now he’s something else entirely. now he’s a teddy bear stuffed with love and golden light. now he’s weightless, floating from room to room with no burden but joy. now he’s a sunbeam slicing through dusty blinds—warm, unhurried, soft at the edges. now he’s a worn sweatshirt straight out of the dryer. the favorite. the one that always gets picked. now he’s a breath finally released. a pause between footsteps. the part of the song that makes you close your eyes. now he’s a well-read book with creased spines and scribbled margins—flawed, loved, and endlessly reread.
he’s happy. deeply, undeniably happy. the kind of happiness he used to believe was just propaganda. nobody was really this content, were they? and yet. and yet. and yet. nanami kento is living proof.
he moves to shift under the blanket, but then he remembers: you’re here. pressed close. your arms looped around him, soft and certain. you’re holding him—again. and he lets you. he's always been a big spoon kind of man. still is sometimes. there’s something steadying about it, something protective. now though, he indulges you. indulges himself, too. years ago, maybe a younger version of him might’ve thought being held like this made him look weak. that version of him was a fool. now, being cradled by your smaller frame feels like the highest honor. a sacred trust.
he has irrational fears sometimes—irrational but persistent. little thoughts that creep in at 6:02 a.m. when the world is quiet enough to let them whisper. that maybe you’ll leave one day. for someone else. someone who knows your favorite candle scents without being told. someone who cooks your comfort foods without asking. someone who loves you the way nanami does. but those thoughts don’t last long. they can’t.
because every morning, no matter how you fell asleep or what kind of day you had, nanami wakes up like this: in your arms. somewhere in the middle of the night, without fail, you always roll over and reach for him. it’s never intentional. it’s never showy. it’s just instinct—your body choosing him over and over again. and it sparks something in him every single time. besides, nanami doesn’t think anyone else could love you like he can. not really. he’s made it his life’s work. his calling. and no one else gets to touch that.
you’re still asleep. peaceful. you’ll stay that way for at least another thirty minutes if he lets you. he always tries to. sometimes you stir, bleary-eyed and half-dreaming, whining for him to stay just a little longer. and every single time, he does. without hesitation. he’ll curl back around you, press slow kisses into your hairline, trace half-shapes against your back through the fabric of your sleep shirt.
he’ll watch you. just for a little while. just until the next breath, the next blink, the next alarm. because there is no word—no language—for the way he feels about you when the light is just beginning to bleed into the room and your arms are wrapped around him like he’s your home.
he would stay there forever. but duty calls. eventually, he has to slip out of your arms. you make a soft noise of protest in your sleep, half-whine, half-murmur, and he stills for a moment—just to watch your face settle back into peace. then he tugs on a worn t-shirt and pads downstairs, still in the pajama pants you love so much.
the infamous ones. the soft navy plaid pair, a little threadbare at the waistband, stretched just enough in all the right places. you claim they’re evil. you swear they cast a spell on you. you’ve clung to his back like a koala over them, muttered threats into his neck, taken full bites out of his shoulder muscle, a woman possessed. he claims he wears them because they’re comfortable. “worn in,” he says with a shrug. but the truth? nanami is a simple man. a man of taste. and if wearing a particular pair of pajama pants means you ogle him like he’s a limited edition photo card, then yes—he will wear them every damn morning for the rest of his life. is it so wrong to enjoy being desired by your wife?
he never really considered himself…attractive. he knew what he looked like. tall. built. decent face. good hair, on good days. but that wasn’t rare. plenty of men fit that description. what made him special? according to you? everything. you say he’s ‘the hottest man in the entire fucking world.’ and while nanami still finds that declaration hard to believe, your constant, shameless, adoring attention has slowly started to rewire something inside him. he doesn’t flinch at compliments anymore. doesn’t second-guess the way you look at him like he’s the eighth wonder of the world. he’s learning to believe it. to believe you.
the kitchen is still dark when he steps in, and he keeps it that way for the most part—only flicking on the light above the stovetop. you’re a deep sleeper, but he’s always careful. gentle. quiet. always respectful. the espresso machine kicks to life with a low whirr, a noise that would’ve startled you awake in the beginning. now? you’ve learned to tune it out. it’s part of the soundtrack of your mornings. a promise in mechanical form.
before nanami, your mornings were bleak. he knows. he’s seen the evidence. you used to crawl out of bed like it was punishment. pour bitter, watery coffee into a chipped mug and pretend it helped. eat a protein bar that tasted like packing material. maybe a questionable piece of fruit if you were feeling ambitious. lunch, if it existed, was often cold leftovers. a bag of chips. a vending machine soda. nanami clocked those bad habits early on. but it wasn’t until you lived together that he could finally do something about them.
now, breakfast is an event. your coffee is never just coffee—it’s the best thing you’ve tasted that day. every morning. he experiments. plays with flavors like he’s crafting love letters in liquid form. homemade blueberry syrup. chocolate cold foam. cinnamon and nutmeg dusted on top just the way you like. he’s memorized your preferences, your allergies, your little quirks. he rarely makes something you don’t like. not just because he’s perfect, but also because he pays attention.
most mornings, he keeps things simple—something warm, something satisfying, something you can eat quickly but meaningfully. a sit-down breakfast is non-negotiable. even on your busiest days, he insists on it. you protest sometimes. you’re in a rush. but he always slows you down. this morning, he’s feeling a little indulgent. leftover homemade butter. pancakes, fluffy and warm. chocolate spread. whipped cream. a handful of fresh berries arranged just so, like a café plate.
you’re going to whine. complain. say he went overboard again, that he doesn’t need to spoil you like this. that you would’ve been fine with toast. he won’t have it. spoiling you is his mission. his hobby. his calling. the high he chases every day. the utter bliss it gives him, knowing he's taking care of you and satisfying you, is like a narcotic. no, better than drugs. nobody even needs drugs, he thinks. they just need a wife. too bad he has the best one, huh?
he moves around the house like a whisper. clean. efficient. at ease. the space is warm, soft, lived-in. he decorated, of course. you squealed when you saw it—pointed out the little touches that screamed nanami. the minimalism, the elegance, the occasional absurd indulgence (like the handcrafted ceramic fruit bowl that cost more than your cart battery when it fizzled out). he cleans constantly. you praise him constantly for it. you love the fresh sheets, the gleaming sink, the way he folds the towels just right.
he doesn’t care much about the structure itself. but what it represents? that matters. this is a home. one he built with you. one he wakes up in and thanks the stars for. he’s had money. he’s lived in a penthouse before—cold, glassy, and forgettable. but this house? this ordinary, wonderful house? this is the dream.
and speaking of dreams—he still can’t believe how lucky he got with yours. you work for a media group. graphic design. a career he could never do, but one he respects deeply. you make good money. more than he ever did. and that doesn’t bother him. not even a little. if anything, he’s proud. stupidly, ridiculously proud. you could afford to work less. but you love what you do. you light up when you talk about projects and deadlines and clients who “get it.” he loves that. loves you.
whatever makes you happy. that’s his mantra. his north star. happy wife, happy life. happy wife, happy life. happy wife. happy wife. happy wife. and you are happy. endlessly. still, he questions it sometimes. your happiness. it creeps in on the stairs as he heads back up with a warm mug of tea. iced coffee is coming—it’s non-negotiable, your fuel—but it’s not warm, and you are always so cold in the mornings. cold and grumbly, buried beneath the covers like a goblin in a hoard of soft blankets, protesting life and light and everything in between.
he gently shakes you awake. a groan. a flail. you throw the covers over your head and threaten to go feral. if you don’t get up now, you’ll be rushing. he knows it, and so, as gently and patiently as ever, he coaxes you into sitting. there’s a quiet apology in the way he touches you—soft fingertips at your wrist, a thumb brushing your temple. he presses a kiss to the crease between your eyebrows, then ghosts his lips over your eyelids like a benediction.
this used to trouble him. all of it. when he first moved in, this—you—was a source of constant, gnawing doubt. if waking up early made you this miserable, then you shouldn’t do it. he would’ve kept working every day of his life if it meant you could sleep in forever. his pretty, sleepy, grumpy wife. as long as she was happy. but he knows now. that’s not what you want. not what you need. and nanami is good—painfully good—at knowing the difference.
you sit in bed, blinking slowly. your hair a mess. his warm presence anchoring you like gravity. it’d be so easy to curl back up and drift off again. but you can’t. you won’t. you’ve got things to do, and you’re already shifting upright. your eyes open—and there he is. the love of your life in the flesh, holding your favorite tea in one hand and looking at you like you invented sunrise.
you’re a strange pair, really. half your life is spent in a slow, sweet argument about how incredible the other one is. you tell nanami he’s everything. he tells you you’re perfect. you shower him with praise; he worships the ground you walk on. it’s silly. it’s true. it never gets old.
he hands you the tea without a word. ginger and lemon, naturally. you curl your knees up to your chest and sip, bleary-eyed, not ready to speak yet. he just watches you, something aching and fond tugging at the corners of his mouth. then he moves around the room—quiet but efficient. he flips on soft lamps, avoiding the harsh overhead light you hate. of course he remembers that. he remembers everything.
“what do you have going on today?” he murmurs, his voice the low, calm timbre that makes you feel safe even in chaos. you mumble something about a meeting—ceo of another media group, something high-profile. they want you to design a billboard. then you’ll be in your office most of the day. there’s that frustrating nonprofit commission you’ve been chewing on. you sigh, already tired. but excited, nonetheless.
nanami already knows all of this. of course he does. but he still asks. because he wants to hear you say it. you’re not naturally forthcoming. you’d rather listen than talk, and rambling feels like overstepping. you get embarrassed. feel like a burden. he adores when you ramble. top five favorite things. maybe number one.
your voice, soft and lilting like a melody. the way your brow scrunches when you explain something complicated. the unfiltered rage you hold in your soul for adobe. that one coworker who “should legally be banned from computers.” your excitement over color theory. your pride in your designs. if he didn’t ask, you wouldn’t say it. so he asks. every morning. every night. every chance he gets. just to hear you talk. just to make you smile.
eventually, you slip out of bed, tea finished, and make your way to the bathroom. your morning routine is precise. mouthwash, brushing, flossing, double-cleansing, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen. like a dance you’ve rehearsed. nanami watches, leaning in the doorway, equal parts enchanted and reverent. he loves this about you. these little rituals. these ways you care for yourself.
yes, he lives to care for you. would happily do everything for you. but he treasures these moments when you do it for yourself, too. and you’re used to his affection by now. at least, mostly. he’s worn down your flustered protests, your half-hearted deflections. even when you mumble “you’re being too nice,” cheeks pink, he never stops. there’s no such thing as “too nice” for you. you deserve everything. he’ll give you everything. and then he’ll find a way to give you more. for now, he settles for a kiss on your cheek.
he stays nearby while you do your hair and makeup. watches, quietly admiring, as you transform. he finds something unspeakably beautiful in it—this act of femininity, of self-care, of artistry. it stuns him, every time. you’re so pretty. and he gets to watch. (he’ll watch you at events, too. galas. weddings. fundraisers. you, dolled up and radiant, chatting easily with someone across the room—and he just stares. eyes full of nothing but awe. “you are so beautiful,” he’ll say for the billionth time. "I could stare at you all day.”)
when you finish, you meet him in the closet. he’s already dressed—business casual, of course. slacks, loafers, a soft button-down with the sleeves rolled neatly to the forearm, collar open just enough to make your heart skip. he doesn’t wear the full suits anymore, not unless the occasion demands it, but the polish is still there. he can’t help it. decorum is in his blood.
he’s laid your clothes out on the bench by the mirror. slacks, a soft t-shirt, your favorite warm cardigan. comfortable, professional, just the right amount of cozy to help you survive a long day. you smile a little at the sight. he always remembers what you like—what makes you feel like you.
and then, the final touch—he pulls your heels down from the shelf. the black iriza pumps with the red soles. you don’t even have to ask. he kneels without a word, sliding them onto your feet with a reverence that makes your chest ache. his hands move with the same tenderness he uses to handle fine china or you when you're sick—like the smallest gesture carries all the love in the world. he meets you at your lips. it’s not quite chaste, but not quite enough to start anything either. a kiss meant to ground you. linger. set the tone for your day.
you give him a peck on the cheek in return and step back. he watches as you grab your purse, a cute little thing that holds next to nothing. “doesn’t it match my shoes perfectly?” you coo, spinning once in the mirror. nanami nods solemnly, the corners of his mouth twitching. indulging you, as always. adoring you, as always. indulgent; smitten. pleased. you say that he spoils you with his praise. but you’re not spoiled. not to him. you’re treasured. treated as you should be.
back in the kitchen, you raise an eyebrow at the breakfast. you shoot him a mock-glare and sit down. no protests today. not out loud, anyway. you’re feeling pampered again; overindulged. and you’re sure he’s done too much. but you know better than to say it—because if you do, you’ll get The Lecture™. the one where he insists this is nothing, that you deserve every sunrise, every meal, every ounce of tenderness he can possibly offer. that spoiling you is the bare minimum, and it’s his honor to do it.
so today? you just eat. quietly. gratefully. and nanami watches, content beyond words. this—you—are all he’s ever wanted.
breakfast is a sweet, simple ritual—one of nanami’s favorite parts of the day. a quiet, shared slice of time before the world starts demanding things from the two of you. he’s already eaten (he always eats early), so while you sit at the bar, nibbling through your pancakes and trying not to rush—because you know it bothers him—he turns to your lunch. some days it’s leftovers. on those days, he makes you vow—swear on our marriage, he’ll say with a solemn expression—that you’ll microwave it properly, and actually eat it. but today, you’re in luck. today, he’s making your current hyperfixation meal: a stacked sandwich, piled high with all your favorite toppings, neatly layered on his homemade focaccia.
nanami was always a good cook. phenomenal, really. but his bread? his bread should be on display in glass cases, under soft lighting, guarded by museum security. he doesn’t share his recipes—what would be the point? no one could replicate them anyway. sourdough, ciabatta, baguette, rosemary focaccia. every loaf tailored to your tastes. he bakes for you more than he eats it himself now—not because he doesn't enjoy it, but because he enjoys you enjoying it so much more.
your reactions are what he lives for. the way your eyes widen like you’ve just tasted heaven. the soft, delighted groan that leaves your throat after the first bite. the dramatic proclamation that this one is the best thing you’ve ever eaten in your life, even if you said the same thing yesterday. he shrugs off the praise on the outside, but inside, it settles warm and heavy in his chest. he stores it away. cherishes it.
once the sandwich is wrapped and tucked lovingly into your lunch tote, it’s time for nanami’s least favorite part of the morning—sending you off to work. he heads out to the garage to turn on your car. always does. makes sure the seat warmers are on, the vents are blowing gently, not too cold. stepping into your car always makes him a little dizzy—it’s the smell. concentrated amounts of you. your perfume, your lotion, your very presence soaked into the upholstery. it’s intoxicating.
he lingers there for a moment, eyes closed, just breathing you in. but there’s still time left in the routine, and he won’t waste it. you’ve finished rinsing your plate in the sink by the time he’s back inside. he tuts disapprovingly as he comes up behind you. “what did I say about doing the dishes?” he murmurs, already plucking it from your hands.
you pout up at him, mock wounded. “can’t help it. felt like contributing to society today.”
“unacceptable,” he replies dryly, kissing your cheek. “that’s my job.” you don’t fight him. you know better. nanami’s house rules are immovable forces of nature.
he double checks that your wallet is tucked into your little purse, the one that holds absolutely nothing of practical value but “matches your shoes so well,” as you put it. he slings it over your shoulder, leads you out the door, opens the car for you. you stop him there. plant him against the frame of the door. grip his collar and pull him down into a kiss that curls his toes. and then, wickedly, as his lips part just slightly, you drag your tongue over his bottom lip and murmur against it: “oops. must’ve had some whipped cream on me still.”
he stares at you like you’ve punched him in the brain. pink starts crawling up his neck, staining his ears, his cheeks. his lips part again, just barely, like he might ask for more. you only giggle, smoothing your thumb across his flushed jaw before pressing one last kiss to his lips. every time you touch him like this, it’s as though he’s starved for it. like the barest flicker of attention from you has to sustain him for weeks. like he still can’t believe you’re real.
you shower him in love and kisses and praises, and he soaks it all up like he’s afraid one day, you might run out. as if being loved by someone like you is a miracle he hasn’t earned, but somehow still gets to wake up to every morning. once, nanami read a quote that said, "I don’t argue with my wife’s decisions—because I'm one of them.” it was supposed to be a joke, but it was the god-honest gospel truth to nanami. he considered framing it. tattooing it on his arm. maybe carving it into the headboard. because you choosing him? that’s a daily gift he never takes for granted.
he watches you slip into your car, watches the way your hand waves lazily as you reverse out of the driveway. watches until your taillights disappear down the street. and then he lingers in the cold morning air just a little longer. the scent of your perfume still clings to his shirt. the ghost of your kiss tingles on his lips.
eventually, he shakes it off. there’s bread to make. floors to sweep. emails to answer. he’s got things to do. just as he’s locking the door behind him, something catches his eye on the kitchen counter. your lunch. you’d forgotten it. of course you did. he exhales slowly through his nose, already imagining the soft lecture he’ll give you later about rushing and forgetting things and the vital importance of eating lunch. but for now, he just picks it up with a quiet sigh and a shake of his head. looks like he has lunch plans after all.
the rest of nanami’s day, much like his morning, is timed—methodical, efficient, and executed with care so precise it almost feels reverent. early on in this new dynamic, when you had finally—finally—worn him down enough to convince him to quit his job, nanami had struggled with an unshakable guilt. he felt…lazy. like he wasn’t contributing to your shared life. as if quitting the corporate world had somehow made him lesser.
you had nearly smacked him across the head when he confessed that. nanami kento? lazy? not contributing? he was the single most productive person you had ever met. you reminded him, loudly and passionately, that not every contribution needed to be measured in income or tasks completed. that there was deep, meaningful work in taking care of the life you'd built together. that he had always deserved softness, too.
he still had his moments of doubt. but now, he channeled them into what he could control. order. care. precision. he kept a bullet journal—the kind that could convert a disorganized soul on sight. it was pristinely kept: straight lines, color-coded tabs, neat boxes to check off with a smooth black pen. unlike your own journal, which was...more interpretive in nature. your diary had concert tickets and fruit stickers tucked between pages, long-winded odes to nanami’s biceps scrawled next to rants about fictional characters and lipstick swatches. his was a blueprint for the day. yours was a fever dream. and yet he loved it—loved you—so deeply he didn’t dare change a thing.
his emotions didn’t need pages. he had you. his heart belonged in the way he folded your socks. today’s list was written last thursday. he’s already ahead of schedule. he starts upstairs, stripping the bed of sheets and the three extra blankets you required to feel comfortable. he throws them in the washer with your favorite lilac-scented detergent. he preps the next load before the first one even starts, separating laundry with care bordering on scientific. the previous night’s load, already dry, is folded and put away with mechanical precision. your blouses are ironed, sleeves crisp and ready for the week ahead.
while in the closet, he notices a pair of your heels—scuffed. he doesn’t hesitate. out comes the polish and buffer. by the time he’s done, they’re immaculate. he dusts the bedroom. cleans the bathroom. reorganizes your skincare and makeup for ease of access. the candle in there—burnt down to a stub—is replaced with one of your favorites: citrus and basil, a fresh brightness even in the dead of winter. the paperback on your nightstand, left open and face-down with its spine bent (a sight that used to make him wince), is now neatly bookmarked and placed beside your pillow.
nothing escapes him. every corner of your shared home is touched by his hands, cleaned and maintained and tended to with quiet, devoted affection. he doesn’t consider it "work." this is care. this is love, made manifest in folded sheets and citrus wax.
he moves to the kitchen next. washes the breakfast dishes. wipes the counters. sprays lavender mist into the air and lights another candle. before he met you, before he moved in with you, nanami never imagined living like this. his concept of a “successful life” was sterile and metallic—money, penthouse, cold glass towers. but the first time he stepped foot into your place, with its stained-glass lamps and chaotic blanket nests and dangerously excessive candle collection, something in him shifted. this wasn’t just a place to live. it was a home. and now, it was his home. and just like he took care of his wife, nanami took care of his home.
later, he works out. of course he does. it keeps him grounded, focused, sane. you fawn over the results with a delight that still manages to surprise him, like you don’t expect him to blush anymore when you bite your knuckle and ogle his arms. he runs in shorts that you once called “illegal” and a t-shirt that sticks to his back. sometimes he runs shirtless. not in public. he has standards—and no audience but you is worth the scandal.
saturdays are his favorite. when you run with him, taunt him, throw yourself on his sweaty back with zero shame. when you lick salt off his collarbone and call him “dangerously edible.” he laughs. he’s also suffering. in a good way. he shakes the thoughts away. focus.
he heads to the farmer’s market, cloth bags in hand, route already planned in his head. he stops by the bakery stand to talk flour ratios and rises with the vendor, who recognizes him by name now. he pauses at the humane society tent. doesn’t linger. you’ve been begging for a cat lately. he’s trying to stay strong. then he sees a fluffy calico curled up in a little ball. he looks away immediately. nope. not today. he is not getting a cat today. he steels his resolve and walks home.
more laundry. more journaling. he plans meals for the week—one of his favorite rituals. he lets himself feel a little smug. everything is under control. until he walks into the kitchen and remembers. your lunchbox. still on the counter. he sighs. picks it up. you’d texted him only five minutes earlier: "I forgot my lunch :[ I was so looking forward to that sandwich.” silly, silly girl. of course he’s going to bring it to you.
he drives over with a small smile and zero annoyance. if anything, he’s grateful for the excuse. you meet him at the curb with a radiant grin, hopping into the passenger seat like he’s your getaway driver. you’ve taken off your cardigan, and your hair’s been pulled up, exposing your neck and arms and that glint in your eye that always makes his pulse skip. and the heels. those damn heels. he has to focus very, very hard to not to stare. but he does anyway.
you devour the sandwich right there, humming your approval with every bite. he hands you the water bottle from the cupholder. “drink,” he says gently.
you groan, “ugh, why do you have to be so responsible all the time, kento?” but you’re smiling, and he’s helpless against it.
he shrugs. “one of us has to be, sweetheart.”
you make a pleased little sound and lean against his shoulder. he allows himself to bask. twenty minutes in your presence is enough to refill him for the rest of the day. you’re a goddess, and he’s your humble servant. he’ll take crumbs. he’ll take your leftover lip gloss and soft laughter and “accidental” thigh brushes when you shift in the seat. you kiss his cheek before hopping out. he doesn’t start the car until you’re out of sight.
he turns to the passenger seat. it still smells like your perfume. then he sighs, spots the lid to your water bottle left sitting in the cupholder, and smiles. old habits die hard. you will forget something everywhere you go. he’ll scold you about rushing later. for now, he’s just happy.
when nanami returns to the house, it’s still home—but still, without you in it, it feels hollow in a way he tries not to think too deeply about. the air is quiet. still. you’d only just kissed his cheek twenty minutes ago, but already, he misses you. he tells himself not to dwell. still, the ache settles low in his chest, familiar and persistent. he doesn’t like being idle, not when he starts thinking too much. not when his thoughts turn to things he doesn’t want to name—irrational worries about not being enough, about you waking up one day and deciding this isn’t what you need anymore. you work so hard, after all. you make things happen. you move the world. and he...keeps the spice rack alphabetized.
you’ve never said anything to make him feel this way. on the contrary—you’re painstakingly kind, endlessly reassuring. you’d never be disappointed in him. never shame him for slowing down, for stepping back, for choosing a life that’s softer, more deliberate. but old wounds whisper, and nanami is a man who has always been his own harshest critic.
what he doesn’t understand—what you’ve tried to tell him a hundred times in a hundred ways—is that you need him now. that somehow, you lived an entire life before him, but you can’t remember how. that your husband taking care of you, anticipating your every need, keeping your life from falling apart in all the ways you don’t have time to see—that’s what gets you through the day. how did you ever survive without him? he doesn’t know. he doesn’t let himself linger on that either. instead, he works.
he deep-cleans the stovetop and the oven, scrubbing every crevice with focused determination. he pulls out the spice rack and reorders it—alphabetically, then by cuisine, because he’s a perfectionist and you love that about him. he’s printed custom labels for everything: cinnamon (ceylon), smoked paprika (hungarian), za’atar (imported). he wipes down the insides of drawers, then fixes the loose one that’s been catching lately. he replaces the kitchen faucet filter and oils the front door hinges. updates the home maintenance log tucked neatly into a drawer.
by the time he starts prepping sourdough, the sun’s slanted low across the floor. it filters through your stained-glass lamp and turns the kitchen gold. this recipe’s new—something he found in a baking forum he checks occasionally. different hydration ratio, different shaping method, new blend of flours. a hint of citrus in this one, something he knows you’ll love. it won’t be ready until tomorrow—good sourdough can’t be rushed—but he smiles as he preps it. he can already picture you breaking off a piece with your fingers, humming in approval. the thought alone makes him light up. nanami is quietly, blissfully happy. and he has you to thank for that. and thank you he will.
he starts dinner next—something you’d offhandedly mentioned craving earlier in the week, half-asleep, your voice muffled against his chest. you probably don’t even remember saying it. he does. of course he does. he listens like that. cares like that. knows you like that.
he times it perfectly. dinner will be hot and plated at exactly 5:30 p.m.—early, yes, but nanami insists on an early evening for your sake. he wants you in bed by 9:00 sharp on weeknights. you hate mornings. you don’t need to be more sleep-deprived. not if he can help it.
now, finally, he allows himself to sit. he sinks into the couch with a book—something dense and intellectually satisfying, a translated work of eastern european literature with tiny font and no chapter breaks. he’s got one of your throw blankets draped over his lap, soft and mismatched against the clean, minimal lines of the living room. he reads. he also checks your location. not obsessively. just...periodically. casually. he tells himself it’s practical. safety-oriented. (he’s lying. he just misses you.) he checks the time. he reads a little more. checks again. his finger taps the edge of the page, eyes drifting to the soft glow of his screen. you’ll be home soon.
he’s stirring the soup on the stove when he hears the garage door shut, then the sound of the front door opening. “namiii, m’home,” you call, voice lilting through the house. it makes his chest ache, in the best way. you sound so lovely. so tired. so his. he could cry, just from the way you say his name. and silly girl—he already knew you were home. he clocked it the second you left the office. still, he abandons the pot on the stove and strides to the front hall.
he meets you at the door, takes your purse from your shoulder and hangs it neatly. then he bends down and kisses you until your knees go soft and your sighs melt right into his mouth. you always make those sweet, airy noises when he kisses you first, like you’re surprised every time. he could do this for hours. sometimes, he does. but for now, he pulls back and drops to his knees—again—a quiet echo of this morning’s ritual. he slips your heels off, cradles them delicately in his hands, and then lifts you into his arms before you can protest. you squeal, whining with a sleepy pout, "I can walk up the stairs, nami…”
you always call him that when you’re sleepy. he loves it. but still—he just clicks his tongue, shakes his head. “let me.” he’ll take care of everything for his billionaire wife. after all, you’ve made him the happiest little househusband in the world. he’d do anything for you.
he sets you down gently in the bedroom, tucks your shoes into their rightful place in the closet, and fetches your favorite comfy clothes. you’re starfished on the bed, face-down, groaning into the freshly washed sheets like they’re heaven. he starts the shower—hotter than he can stand, just how you like it—and presses a kiss to your temple.
“dinner will be ready when you’re done,” he murmurs. he loves when you’re freshly showered. loves knowing he’s taken care of you, start to finish. you work so hard. you give so much. and now, he gets to make you clean and full and soft.
sometimes you eat at the table. on warm nights, out on the balcony. when you’re sick or sad, he brings dinner to the bed and ignores how it messes the sheets. he’ll wash them again anyway. but tonight? tonight, you’re affectionate. you tell him you missed him. that it didn’t matter that you saw him at lunch—because you missed him before that, and after that. you curl up in his lap while you eat. spoonfuls of warm soup, every bite met with praise: so good, incredible, he’s a genius, a chef, a miracle worker.
this is the part of the evening where you praise him endlessly. he used to try and cut you off, tell you he was just doing what needed to be done. that you deserved it. that it wasn’t a big deal. he doesn’t stop you anymore. not when your voice is that sweet. not when you pepper kisses across his face and tell him how good the house smells, how excited you are for tomorrow’s bread, how you need a vacation just to spend every waking second with him. you call him handsome, strong, perfect. you say you’re desperately, stupidly, irremediably in love with him. he squirms. he blushes. but you’re not teasing. you never are. that’s what makes it worse. you’re sincere. honest. brutally so. and you won’t let him wriggle out of your arms without hearing it.
after dinner, while he’s still tucked into the chair, you slip away—quiet as a mouse but not quiet enough. you make it all of five minutes into doing the dishes before he appears in the doorway, arms folded, already displeased. he doesn’t raise his voice. he doesn’t need to. he walks over, firm but unhurried, and before you can launch into your rehearsed defense—“just a few plates, I promise, nami, let me help—”—his hand closes gently around your arm and turns you. you barely register it until your cheek is pressed into his chest, until his warmth surrounds you like a blanket you didn’t know you needed.
and just like that, you’re undone. your shoulders slump. your arms go limp. your whole body sighs in defeat—but it’s a sweet kind of surrender, the kind that only he can pull from you. all at once, you're smaller. sleepier. soft and warm and in love. he smells like spices and soap. the soft cotton of his shirt holds your temple. his fingers are moving slowly across your back, soothing little circles. you cling to him out of habit, cheek smooshed against his sternum, the tension melting from your limbs.
“this is a dictatorship,” you mumble. he hums. noncommittal. he knows it is. you’ve called it that before.  “you’re gonna get burnt out,” you say, quieter now, words thick with sleep and guilt. “you’re gonna wear yourself out doing everything…”
his chin rests against the top of your head. "I won’t.”
“you could let me do some things,” you say, even softer. "I can wash a dish, y’know. fold a towel. vacuum. occasionally.”
his arms tighten just slightly around you, like he’s afraid you’ll try to wriggle away. "I know you can,” he says. “but I like doing this for you.” you try to argue again, but he shushes you gently with a kiss to your hairline. “let me take care of you,” he whispers. “just tonight.” it isn’t just tonight. you both know that. but you nod. because the truth is, you don’t want to fight him on it. not really.
it’s his devotion that tames you. his steadiness. his quiet pride in being the one you trust enough to collapse into. and it always gets you like this—pliable, drowsy, obedient in a way you aren’t for anyone else. you press your forehead harder into his chest like you’re trying to fuse into him. and oh, how he loves that. how he craves it. he rocks you slightly as he finishes the dishes. you stay wrapped around him the whole time, arms slung around his waist, your head bobbing with every slow sway. the sounds of running water and clinking porcelain fade into a background lullaby. rosy-cheeked. hair slightly tangled. a sleepy, beautiful mess. “you’re gonna spoil me,” you murmur, avoiding his loving gaze.
he brushes a speck of dust off your collarbone, kisses your temple. “that’s the plan.” you huff and roll your eyes and…you believe him. because with nanami, love isn’t loud. it’s offered. it’s kneeling to take off your shoes. it's soup on the stove and tea by the bed and holding you steady when you’re too tired to hold yourself up. it’s never asking you to earn it. and your soft, trusting surrender? that’s the gift you give him back.
he lifts you up onto the counter like a child, still damp from your shower, skin warm and lotioned, hair pulled back, fuzzy socks on your feet. he cleans the kitchen around you while you swing your legs, watching him. he preps your coffee setup for tomorrow, gets out your favorite breakfast tea. he thrives in this.
and the whole time, you tell him everything. your meeting. the nonprofit update. the best and worst parts of your day. he listens, attentive and quiet. he sees your tiredness and tries not to let guilt creep in. this is what you want. what makes you happy. you’ve told him that a million times.
you go on a walk. the sun is still hanging on, soft and golden. you ask about his day now. he tells you—about the farmer’s market, the old man he chatted with, the cat he saw loitering around the humane society’s tent. you beg for the cat. promise him the world if he lets you bring it home. he almost gives in. he will, eventually. “...I'll think about it,” he says. he’s been thinking about it. he’s always thinking about what you want and how he’ll find a way to give it to you.
back home, you smell like lilacs and wind. he heads upstairs to grab your book and favorite blanket while you brew tea. normally he’d insist on doing it for you, but you’re focused, content, and he can’t bear to interrupt. you bring him a cup of his usual—unsweetened chamomile. yours is sugared and creamy, bright and warm. just like you, he thinks. you hand him his cup with a smile that nearly undoes him.
then you both tumble to the couch, legs tangled. your feet over his lap. book in hand. forehead resting on his shoulder. you read like that for a while. your eyes start to close. eventually, you whine—don’t wanna go to bed yet, wanna spend more time with him. but he’s heard this before.
he takes your cups to the sink and guides you to the bedroom—not carrying you, not tonight. you’d fuss and push at him, and he doesn’t want to risk the tears. you cry sometimes when you’re too tired and he overwhelms you with love. he can’t take that. it breaks him. so he’s gentle. calm. steady.
he changes into your favorite pajama pants and cradles you close. your hair is dry now. he runs his fingers through it. presses kisses to your temple. whispers sweet little things. how much he loves you. how proud he is. how you’ve given him everything he never dared hope for. you always say he does more for you than you do for him. he ignores that. he doesn’t believe it. you give. every day. every hour. and he will spend the rest of his natural life giving it all back.
he’ll make you sourdough french toast in the morning. ginger-lemon tea. it’ll be a new day, and it will be good. he holds you tight as you fall asleep, tracing your back exactly how you like. you’re out within minutes. he stays awake just a little longer, arms around you, nose tucked into your hair. when the alarm goes off in the morning, your arms are wrapped around him. just like always.

the first time tsukki buys you flowers, it’s almost by accident.
he’s on his way to your house after practice, passing by a small flower shop, when a bouquet of soft yellow tulips catches his eye. he has no idea why he stops to look at them—maybe it’s the way they remind him of you, always bright and warm. checking his wallet, he enters the shop and buys them.
truth be told, he doesn’t expect much of a reaction from you, you have been dating for four months and he doesn’t even know if you like flowers (he knows you’re not allergic though because you always tend to the school garden with one of your friends) and when he arrives, he just shoves them into your arms.
but, when your eyes widen in delight, your fingers tighten around the stems and you look at him like he’s just handed you the stars, he knows he’s fucked.
you cling to his arm all the afternoon, giggling every time you look at the flowers and kissing him endlessly, he feels his cheeks burning.
“I should have just brought you candy.” he mutters, pretending to be annoyed.
but he does it again. and again. and again.
sometimes, he starts picking up flowers on random days—after practice, when he sees sales on his konbini… you react the same way, eyes bright, arms thrown around him, pressing kisses to his face. he mumbles under his breath but he never pulls away from your hugs and precious kisses he cherishes so much.
he continues doing so when you go to tokyo to study and he stays in sendai. every two weeks, without fail, a bouquet arrives at your doorstep, always with a note scrawled in his familiar and neat handwriting, “try not to kill these before i visit you, pretty.”
and when he sees you again, you throw yourself at him in the middle of the train station and, like always, he lets you. because he’s missed this and you.
even after college, the flowers never stop.
the day he thinks about proposing, he goes back to your old text messages, finding your messages and pictures about every single bouquet he has given you and asks for a special bouquet filled with one of every single important bouquet he has given you, from the tulips to the roses he gave you last anniversary.
as he hands you the bouquet and goes down on one knee, you tear up and nod, hands shaking as he puts the ring on your finger and he knows he made the right choice by choosing you.
the morning of your wedding is a blur of soft laughter and excitement as you sit down on the chair to start getting your makeup and hair done.
but before they can start, yachi clears her throat, drawing your attention.
“i have something for you.”
yachi grins, stepping aside to reveal the most beautiful bouquet resting in one of the vanities.
you gasp—the bouquet is a masterpiece filled with pastel calla lillies, clemantis, veronicas and slipper orchids. you stand up, reaching out for the flowers, brushing over the beautiful petals. and then, you see your name written in his familiar handwriting in an envelope.
baby,
i’d like to say that i planned all of this from the beginning, that the first time i bought you flowers, i already knew i would be doing it for the rest of my life, but the truth is that i didn’t realize until i saw your beautiful eyes and gorgeous smile when you saw the yellow tulips.
i love your smile and i wanted to see you smile. you looked at me like i had given you the world and you held to them like you never wanted to let go.
so, i kept bringing them every chance i had. do you remember how sad you were when the wind ruined the bouquet i gave you during your last finals weeks? i got so mad and sad that i ran to the store at nearly 2 am to buy you some and get them sent to you the following day.
i am not good with words, you know that so i guess that i found everything that i wanted to say through flowers: i miss you, you’re the best thing that has happened to me, i love you, i want to spend the rest of my life with you…
i think that this one is the most special one. do you remember all those late night work i had to do? i lied, sorry.
i was getting special lessons from the florist down the street: how to prepare a bouquet, how to cut the stems perfectly so they last longer, how to take care of them… all of that so i could get you what i think it is the prettiest bouquet of all the ones i have gotten you although i don’t think they are as beautiful as you are but i have selected them because their delicate colors and smoothness makes me think of you and i don’t know, i wanted to remind you that you are always on my mind.
holy shit, you and me forever. FOREVERRRRRRRRR (if you see tear marks while you read this, those are NOT mine).
i love you baby, i’ll wait for you at the end of the aisle so, take a deep breath, wipe those tears (I know you are probably crying) and see you soon. can’t wait to make you my wife.
-kei.
you clutch the letter to your chest as tears spill freely onto your cheeks and your friends laugh softly, cleaning their own tears as well.
“is it too late to use this as my wedding bouquet?”

⋆✴︎˚⋆ Pile I
OH- OHHHHHHHHH (I HAD to do this🤓) The moment I flipped these cards, I had to take a deep breath because WOW this spread is screaming romance, romance, ROMANCEThe energy here? Soft, dreamy, emotionally available, and actually willing to communicate their feelings like a functioning adult. (Shocking, I know.) This is the kind of person who has main character energy, but not in an obnoxious "look at me" way, more like a "low-key mysterious but actually an absolute sweetheart who accidentally makes people fall in love with them" type. They are also giving ‘hopeless romantic with a heart of gold’ vibes, but also kinda shy and dorky at times.
They’re deeply in touch with their emotions, thanks to all this Cups energy, which means they feel things deeply. We’re talking someone who sends you “thinking of you” texts just because, who remembers tiny details about you that even you forgot, and who probably makes killer playlists based on your mood. (OML😭) They might even be the type to write poetry or play an instrument. (If this person owns a guitar and has ever strummed it while looking out of a window dramatically, I will scream.) They’re also super romantic. They believe in love. Like, BELIEVE believe. They’re not out here for some casual nonsense; they’re here for the feels. If they’ve been hurt before, they’re still hopeful and open to love instead of being bitter. (We love emotional maturity.) Physically i am seeing doe-eyed, soft-smiling, artistic cutie vibes. BABE. BABE. This relationship is so soft, so wholesome, so emotionally fulfilling, if yall are people who had a relationship where you felt like you didn't even exist to the person then this NEXT relationship is totally different. You know how in movies there’s always that one couple who makes everyone else sick with how adorable they are? Yeah, that’s y’all (i’m really NOT jealous) . They’re also a partner in every sense of the word meaning they work with you, not against you. . If you’re struggling, they’re there to support you. If they’re struggling, you’ll actually know about it because they communicate. (A rare species, truly.) They’re most prolly a Water sign/ has strong water placements or just very emotionally intuitive. If you have someone with these placements around you, then this is your sign.  3 out of 4 cards are cups so i believe Y’all might bond over something artistic, music, painting, poetry, photography, film, something that requires emotions to create. They fall fast and hard, so if you’re used to people who are distant or confusing, this is gonna feel like a whole new world. This is the kind of love that feels like a warm hug after a long day, safe, sweet, and real.
this person is a walking green flag. Soft but passionate. Romantic but stable. Playful but serious about love. This is the kind of relationship that feels safe and exhilarating at the same time, like home, but with butterflies. If you’ve been manifesting someone emotionally available, thoughtful, and ready to go all in for you…well, here they come. Oh, and one last thing, the fact that three out of four cards are Cups? That’s no accident. This person is MEANT to stir up your emotions and bring you into a deeper love experience. It’s not just about dating; it’s about feeling something real again.

⋆✴︎˚⋆Pile II
First off, this person? Chaotic. But like, in the best way possible. The Fool and Page of Cups together are giving ✨ golden retriever energy ✨ with just a sprinkle of emotionally confused poet vibes. They’re the type to send you ten unhinged tiktok totally out of the blue with no explanation, and then disappear for three hours because they had an unexpected emotional breakdown. I had a friend like that who used to do this, and trust me these kind of people are strangely ADORABLE. They’re playful, optimistic, and have this lowkey naive, wide-eyed way of looking at life, but don’t be fooled, Strength is here, meaning they know how to handle their emotions. They just choose to exist in this dreamy, slightly reckless way.  I’m getting someone with a youthful look, no matter their actual age. Soft features, expressive eyes that basically scream “I have deep thoughts but I get distracted by cute dogs”,
Okay, so, Page of Cups and 7 of Swords? Babe… this is giving situationship that could turn into a masterpiece or a disaster, depending on how you play it. There’s gonna be a lot of dreamy, flirty, almost cinematic moments where you’re both caught up in the fantasy of each other. But here’s the thing, with 7 of Swords meaning, there’s a hidden element to this person. Not necessarily in a bad way, but you might feel like they’re holding something back. Strength is telling me you might end up being the one keeping this relationship stable, because this person? Yeah, they’re fun, romantic, and spontaneous, but they need someone who grounds them. Otherwise, they’ll float off into whatever alternate reality they live in. You might find yourself teaching them how to actually deal with their feelings instead of turning everything into an inside joke or a quirky monologue.
This connection? It’s got potential. I was getting ‘JUST KISS ALREADY’ vibes from this spread so many times. But also, This person might have commitment issues at first, or they just don’t realize when they’ve caught feelings. This relationship will be fun, unexpected, and maybe a little messy at times. You’ll never be bored, but you might have to decide if you’re willing to wait for them to fully step up and be emotionally present. If you do? This could turn into one of those soulmate-tier love stories that start off as chaotic best friends and then evolve into something real. This person is gonna make you laugh so hard your stomach hurts, and you’re gonna make them feel like home. Just make sure they don’t get lost in the clouds before they realize what they have with you.

⋆✴︎˚⋆ Pile III
Picture someone who walks into a room and the air literally shifts, not in a dramatic, "I’m better than you" way, but in that "damn, why does this person feel like a wish come true?" kind of way. The Star as the headliner of this spread? BABY, this person is ethereal.
They’ve been through their fair share of life lessons, some of them painful as hell, but instead of becoming bitter, they’ve transmuted all that pain into wisdom and grace. (Honestly, teach me your ways, mysterious heartthrob.) They’re a dreamer, but not the delusional kind. I have a strong feeling that pile 3 already know their person at the very least, they’re connected to your past in a really poetic way. The 6 of Cups is screaming, "This ain't no random fling, this is destiny, baby!" There’s a familiarity about them, like the feeling of revisiting your childhood home after years of being away. There’s also a chance that this person is deeply sentimental, they might keep old love letters, hoard little trinkets from meaningful moments, or be the type to remember the exact date you first texted them "lol" and took it as a sign from the universe. They’re romantic, but in a quiet, "let me show you, not just tell you" kinda way.
Physically? ELEGANT. LUXURIOUS. GOURGEOUS. 10/10. I also have the feeling that for some of you, this person might be quite rich as well. They could be successful or at least super stable and independent, but there’s something soft and sentimental about them like they love deeply but don’t fall easily. One thing i would say that they don't fall easily. 4 of the Pentacles is telling me that they guard their heart like a bank vault. Not in a "toxic, emotionally unavailable" way, but in a "I don’t just give my energy to anyone, I need to be sure" kinda way. They might be financially stable or working towards major success, so they protect what they’ve built. At first, they might be reserved, taking their sweet time to open up, but once they do? BABY, THEY’RE ALL IN. Slow-burning but SO rewarding. This is the kind of love that feels like déjà vu, like you were meant to find each other.  And the thing is, you’re worth the risk to them. Your connection makes them feel safe enough to let go of their tight grip on control. This isn’t a surface-level situationship, this is intentional, slow-burning, "I want to build something real with you" love.
(Also, be ready for someone who spoils you subtly, not in a flashy, Gucci gifts every day kinda way, but in "I remembered you liked that indie artist, so I got us front-row tickets" kinda way. 🥹) BUT one more thing, also think They’re going to be verrryyy slow to say ‘I love you’—but when they do? Oh, it means something. This is the kind of person who will show you they love you 100 different ways before they ever say it out loud.

Summer Lovin’
Robert “Bob” Floyd x Fem!Reader
Y’all I am so late to the Bob Floyd hype train but I can’t stop thinking about giving him the full SoCal experience (Also is Bob actually from Montana or is that just a widely accepted hc ?)
Tumblr media
(No use of y/n, fem!reader, reader is a SoCal native, language, for the purpose of this fic Bob is from Montana, reader has an annoying but loving uncle, I think this is gonna end up being a multi-part fic)
(Note: okay I made a lot of changes again because turns out, my memory is kinda shit and I completely forgot to add the parts with Maverick and the Rooster piano scene)
Part 1 [Word Count: 3.6k]
Next Chapter - Masterlist
Meeting a man like Robert Floyd had to be a moment of pure fucking luck.
The drive down to San Diego was a complete bitch. You were on your way to Naval Base Point Loma for your uncle’s retirement ceremony and of course, when you got there, you were stuck at the main gate because of your lack of military ID or spouse card. You needed your uncle to basically confirm that you are family and let you in. You grabbed your phone off its stand and snickered to yourself at the contact name from when he had this ridiculous mustache that he refused to shave
“Hey siri, call Wannabe Tom Selleck.”
After a few rings, he picked up,
“Ohh guess who finally decided to show up. Lemme guess, you need me to come buzz you in?”
“Yep.”
“Well what’s the magic word?”
You let out a groan and tried again,
“Can you please come get me, I’ve been driving for two hours and I feel like if I don’t stretch my legs in the next five minutes I’m gonna lose it.”
“Relax kiddo, I’m on my way.”
Tumblr media
The ceremony started promptly at one and was over by two, your uncle spent the next hour showing your family around the base then you took family photos on the beach for a bit. At dinner, your relatives gave you the interrogation of a lifetime: asking about your school, work, and relationships. The last topic had you flustered as it had been a while since you’d actually dated anyone. Sure, you had some flings here and there, but nothing actually serious or worth bringing home to meet your family.
“You really ought to find yourself a military man just like your aunt, that way you only have to deal with him for about half the year, and you’d get the whole house to yourself while he’s away.”
Laughter erupted around the table, and your uncle smiled over his glass before speaking,
“Well that’s the case for about 20 years or so, then he retires and you’re stuck with him and his loud-ass snoring forever.” He lazily threw his arm around his wife, who rolled her eyes and smiled.
You reached out to hold her hand and asked, “Seriously Auntie, how have you put up with him for this long?"
She gave your fingers a squeeze and replied, “Well sweetie, he’s the love of my life, and I just have to remind myself of that sometimes. Especially when I’m thinking of smothering him with my pillow.”
The sound of laughter bounced around the restaurant, and you laughed along too, but your mind was still stuck on the idea of 'finding yourself a military man'. Of course, you wanted to find a good man to settle down with but it wasn’t that simple, it felt like literally every part of dating was a struggle for you, even meeting people was hard. And then there was the other thought, if you were to be with a navy/army/whatever guy who was deployed half of the year, is that something you could realistically handle. You'd never been in a long-distance relationship and you've heard the stories about military spouses who's partners cheat while away. Or what if he's perfect and you love him and everything is great- and then he gets stationed in another state. Then you would have to choose between staying close to your family or moving to stay close to him. Your uncle must have noticed you spacing out, or maybe he saw the way your eyebrows furrowed a bit as you pondered the hypothetical relationship with a military man. He took a piece of his napkin, rolled it between his fingers, and flicked it at you from the palm of his hand. It hit you right between your brows and you turned to him with a (greatly exaggerated) open-mouth face of shock, with a hand over your chest 'clutching your pearls'.
He threw his head back as he laughed at you,
“Geez Louise kiddo you’ve gotta lighten up a bit, maybe live a little.”
You scoffed “Gee thanks for the advice, any more suggestions on how to ‘live a little’ old man?”
Before he could respond to your sarcasm with his usual quips or a clever joke, a brilliant idea hit him like a brick, and you swore you could actually see the little lightbulb appear over his head.
“We’re going to the beach.”
Tumblr media
The “beach” in question was actually a military-access beach on the north part of Coronado Island called “Breakers Beach”. Since it was a part of Naval Air Station North Island, it was only available to military personnel and their guests. You had given your keys to your aunt, who was ready to go home after a day in heels and her second glass of wine, so your uncle drove the two of you in his truck. Turns out, your little field trip to the “beach” was actually a little field trip to a bar called the “Hard Deck”.
You’d heard about it before in one of your uncle's stories, about two years back, he was arm-wrestling another officer at the bar when a man at the other end accidentally knocked over a drink. The wet counter caused his elbow to slip, he lost the match and got stuck paying for his buddy’s tab. Of course, he then grabbed the man from the end of the bar and dragged him outside by his collar (at least he had the "decency" to take him outside before bashing his face in). Turns out, the man was a Rear Admiral and the head of some program for fighter pilots, so maybe bashing his face in was not a good idea and probably would’ve resulted in a lifelong ban from the bar. They apologized, shook hands, and then did some shots together.
Your uncle pulled up to the gate with his ID ready, the man in the booth took it and looked your way, and you handed over your driver's license. He looked between the two of you and asked for your "relation?" Before you got the chance to respond, your uncle smiled at the man and clapped his hand on your shoulder like he was showing off a new car at the dealership,
“Oh, this young lady right here is my beautiful niece who just so happens to be single.”
Then he fucking winked at the officer and brought his elbow up in a “nudge-nudge” gesture.
You felt your heart stop. The son of a bitch was actively trying to get you a man.
“Oh my god please no” you begged with your face now buried in your palms, but he was still going at it with the poor guy who just stood there dumbfounded.
“I’m just saying if you’re single and she’s single-”
You cut him off, “Sir, I am so sorry please ignore him.” But he just couldn't shut the fuck up,
“See? Look how polite she is, son I’m telling you this is honest to God girlfriend material right here!”
Finally, the poor man spoke up,
“I uh- already have a girlfriend sir.” he gave a little shrug as he handed back your IDs and opened the gate.
Your uncle didn't miss a beat.
“Well in that case, son, you just dodged a bullet cause she’s actually a handful, you have a good night.” he said with a grin, then slowly pulled through the gate.
You waited until you were out of earshot,
“I hate you.”
“Yeah, I love you too.”
After a few minutes of driving in complete silence, you made it to the bar and he pulled into a spot. Realizing that your uncle was about to go boyfriend hunting for you in a bar full of Naval officers you pulled down the sun visor’s mirror to check your face and hair. You had dressed up and done a bit more makeup than usual because it was his damn retirement ceremony and you knew your family was going to take pictures. You picked one of your nice dresses, a blue short-sleeved one that cut off just above your knees and was perfect for the warm weather, you wore some ankle boots with a small heel and a purse to match. You had no idea if you were overdressed or underdressed, and honestly, you don’t really know which is worse. Your uncle had changed out of his dress whites before dinner and now he wore just jeans and a polo shirt, so between the two of you, you definitely looked overdressed.
Your uncle made his way over to you as you hopped out of the truck, and put both hands on your shoulders,
"Here's the game plan kiddo, we're gonna go in there, get some drinks, and have a good time. I don't wanna hear any complaining. You're gonna go put yourself out there and meet some guys and get their numbers. And if anyone starts giving you trouble, I'll take care of it."
You looked up at him, nodded, and gave a small smile. Despite all the jokes and embarrassing moments from the day, it was nice to know that he cared and would protect you no matter what.
You sighed and turned towards the bar, thinking 'fuck it, I've got this'
Tumblr media
Dear lord, you did not 'got this'. You did not 'got this' at all. The bar was completely full of patrons and it wasn't even six yet, and it was loud. All the conversations, the multiple pool games going on, and the music playing in the background layered on top of each other.
Your uncle agreed to stay with you for a bit while you worked up the nerves to go out on your own, you sat together at the corner of the bar facing towards each other. Your uncle strategically sat down so that he was facing the TVs, and you were facing the other end of the bar where the pool tables were. There was a group around one of the tables, all in their khaki uniforms, there were about ten or twelve of them in total, but a smaller group of five stood closer to the table chatting. A woman at the center caught your eye immediately, she was shorter than the men around her, but she carried herself with no less confidence. She was talking to two men standing together, probably good friends, and another two stood next to her, probably her friends.
Your uncle turned around to follow your gaze, then turned around once he saw the group you had been watching
"Someone's interested, alright which one of 'em is it?"
"Calm down, I was just trying to figure out what their uniforms are for."
"They're probably pilots."
"How can you tell?"
"Bunch of little nerds, just look at the one with the glasses over there."
You raised an eyebrow, there were about ten faces you skimmed over and absolutely none of them had glasses.
"On a stool, to the right. Look but don't be obvious."
You rolled your eyes and shifted your gaze past your uncle to look for the "little nerd" and sure enough, there he was. He was sitting on a stool with a cup of peanuts, watching the conversation in front of him. His hair was sandy blonde and styled nicely, he wore the same uniform as the rest of the group, and he had some huge fucking glasses which would've been ridiculous had he not been so good-looking. He's pretty cute- but of course, it's the one your uncle makes fun of that would catch your eye, you smiled as you thought to yourself.
Then he turned, and suddenly he was looking straight at you.
You immediately looked down, startled by the sudden eye contact, after a beat you looked up to see if he had turned away yet. He didn't. When he caught you staring a second time, a small smile crept up on his lips, and raised his hand to give a little wave. Damn it he's cute. You smiled back, but instead of waving back you looked down again in embarrassment and started fiddling with your hair. Your uncle did not miss the interaction,
"Seriously, him?"
"Dude stop he's gonna hear you."
"I mean, you do you kiddo but he's probably only gonna ever want to talk about Star Wars, and video games, and books."
"I like those things."
You peeked over and sure enough, he was looking too.
"You like 'em little nerds."
"Okay stop saying 'little' and 'nerds' you old man or I'm gonna start introducing you as my grandpa."
"Ya know what, just for that you're on your own, I'll be over there watching the game and you're gonna go socialize."
He grabbed his beer and slid off his barstool, giving your shoulder two taps as a 'good luck' before making his way over to a booth near the TVs where he joined a group of patrons he recognized.
When you turned again to see if the man with the glasses was still looking he was now talking to the group of pilots around him. You watched as he stood up from his chair, took the cue that was being handed to him by the woman from earlier, and began to set up a game of 9-ball for the group. You were a bit disappointed that his focus was on something else but relieved that you didn't have to immediately go and strike up a conversation, you wanted to prepare a little.
The sharp sound of a bell ringing snapped you out of your thoughts, and suddenly everyone was cheering and thanking this man sitting at the other side of the bar. You have no idea what the hell that was about but before you could question it, the woman behind the bar was looking straight at you,
"Can I get you something to drink hun?"
You looked down at your empty glass, considered a second drink, then thought better of it. If you were actually gonna go talk to Mr. Glasses it was not gonna be while inebriated. You smiled back at her and asked shyly,
"Could I actually get something without alcohol?"
"Of course, sweetie. I can get you water, soda, or maybe a Shirley Temple."
You hadn't had one of those since you were a kid. It's ginger ale with some grenadine and maybe a cherry, nothing special, but the nostalgia hits you like a truck.
"Can I get a Shirley Temple please?"
"Sure thing, hun. It's on the old man's tab"
You laughed thinking she'd overheard your conversation, calling your uncle an "old man", then you noticed as she gave a cold look towards a man sitting at the other end of the bar. So that's what the bell means.
You thanked her before turning again towards the pool tables to see if Mr. Glasses was playing but instead, a tall blonde man held the cue and Mr. Glasses was off to the side next to another pilot with a buzzcut. The second you locked eyes again you smiled quickly, so you didn't seem rude, and then turned away.
'Every time I look at him he's looking at me.' you smile to yourself as the lady comes back with your drink. She's absolutely gorgeous, piercing blue eyes and a pretty smile, and the way she calls you "sweetie" and "hun" makes your cheeks heat up. You introduce yourself, shaking her hand and she introduces herself as 'Penny'. She asks what brings you to Breakers Beach and you tell her about your uncle's retirement and how he brought you here to basically find yourself a husband. She chuckles at this and tells you to 'be careful with those aviators' before shooting another glare at the man on the other side of the bar.
"What do you mean?"
She shrugs, "It's a long story."
Then she rips a long receipt from the machine, and winks.
"Watch this," she says, with a devilish grin plastered on her face and she walked back over to the aviator that had pissed her off so much, that she'd warn you to stay away from them altogether.
Someone had pulled the plug on the music and the sound of groans and complaints filled the silence, you saw a tall man wearing sunglasses and an aloha shirt make his way over to a piano and sit. He had the same kind of ridiculous mustache that you'd picked on your uncle for but somehow this dude pulled it off. He started playing when the sound of the bell filled your ears again, this time more aggressively. The patrons cheer and start chanting "overboard" and three of the pilots from earlier make their way over to the man, two grabbing each of his arms and the third picking him up by his legs. They carried him to the door as Penny shouted after him, "It was great to see you, Pete!" When the men made it to the door they literally threw him "overboard" out of the bar, you hoped that maybe the sand cushioned his fall.
When you turned back to the pool tables Mr. Glasses and everyone else had vanished, you scanned the bar and found them huddled around Mr. Mustache on the piano who began to play a song from that old movie "Jamboree". Damn it that man could sing, and play. The whole bar lit up, everyone singing and dancing along to the music, and you just watched from the bar, as if you were glued to your seat. You steal another glance at Mr. Glasses as he sang along, when you locked eyes you began to copy his little dance of bouncing his shoulders up and down, he tilts his head and a huge, boyish grin spreads on his face.
When the song ended, the crowd erupted with howls and applause, and Mr. Mustache began to do this funky little victory dance as the whole bar chanted the word "Rooster" over and over again. Mr. Mustache is apparently Mr. Rooster now.
Tumblr media
The crowd begins to trickle back to their tables and you notice the group of pilots that had previously staked their claim on the pool tables now decided to make their way toward the bar for some more drinks. But Mr. Glasses decided to stay at the pool tables, he picked up the cues and began cleaning up a bit. You feel a little tug on your heartstrings, he must be awkward, he has to be. You had hoped he'd come up to you at the bar and strike up a conversation, you're pretty sure any other man would have by now with the number of times he's caught you stealing glances at him.
You thought back to your uncle's little pep talk, looking through the crowd you could see him chatting with a group of people, all of them smiling and laughing with each other. He was right, you're on your own this time and it's time to stop worrying and go live a little.
"Fuck it" you thought, you're just gonna walk up to him and introduce yourself then try to have a good conversation and hopefully get his number. If it goes well, great! And if it doesn't, then at least you know that you tried. You gather up the last bits of courage you can muster and you finish the last few sips of your drink. You wave a quick goodbye to Penny, slip off your seat, and start walking over to finally go meet Mr. Glasses.
Tumblr media
He looks genuinely surprised when he notices you make your way over to him, when you're a few feet apart you manage to get out a small "Hi" which comes out way higher than you intended. Before you can introduce yourself, his eyes light up as he asks,
"Oh did you want to play?"
He smiles and extends one of the cues to you. You couldn't help the little sound of confusion that slipped out of your mouth,
"Huh?"
"Well, I noticed you look over a few times and I thought that maybe you just really wanted to play billiards."
"Oh"
Oh? Are you fucking kidding me- you'd just spent the last hour stealing glances and blushing at this guy from across the room, and he thinks it's because you just 'really wanted to play pool?!' You literally haven't played pool in years but now that he offered it would be too awkward for the both of you if you declined. But it's too late to turn back now, you decide that making yourself look like a fool in front of him is a price you're willing to pay if it means you can actually get to know him.
You smile sweetly as you take the cue from him, softly brushing his fingers with your own, and you introduce yourself.
"Oh I'm Bob. Bob Floyd."
"Bob?"
"It's uh- short for Robert."
"Robert Floyd" you repeated.
You thought for a second, then tried your luck,
"Would you mind if I called you Robbie?" you asked, tilting your head.
"No, not at all." he shook his head and a pink blush spread to the tips of his ears. He looked down and fixed his glasses with nervous fingers before looking back up at you. "I don't mind."
You smiled as you had your own little lightbulb moment.
"Tell you what Robbie, let's play 9-ball and whoever loses has to buy the winner a drink."
He stared at you for a moment, mouth hanging slightly open, then he swallowed and looked down quickly to pick up the cue chalk. He met your eyes again (oh god he has gorgeous eyes) and he smiled, confidently now, and replied
"You're on."

Divider by @bernardsbendystraws
(Author's Note: oh this is already wayyy longer than I had planned. I've never really written a fic before and I kinda just use the dividers when I don't know how to move from scene to scene. Let me know if you have any writing tips or suggestions! - update: I just went in with a whole bunch of edits to fix the grammar and dialogue + added some scenes to make the fic a bit closer to the movie scene)

Like anywhere they like to be together!! Maybe even the group couch!! Or the shared kitchen!! Or their games room!! The possibilities are endless 💞💞
A supposed 3-4 hours
Summary: Basically what the ask says lol I really liked it. Bob Reynolds x Fem!reader.
Warnings/content: Some smut! Very fluffy, very sweet. Some dom/sub undertones if you squint.
Word Count: 1.3k Little story. Support me on my Ko-fi so I can write more!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"How long will you guys be gone?"
Yelena looked up at you as she picked up her bag off the ground next to the kitchen counter you were sat on.
"Uhh...Buck, what do you think?" Yelena said as Bucky walked into the room, and she threw her bag at him which he easily caught with his vibranium arm.
Buck thought for a moment. "3-4 hours give or take? We'll pick up Ava and Walker on the way back. Alexei...No idea when he'll be back up."
Your heart fluttered with hope at the idea they would be out for a big chunk of the day. You looked over at Bob, reading on the couch and gave him a slight smile. "Well, hopefully I don't disturb Bob's reading. But I doubt he'll even notice I'm the only one here, he's been stuck in that book for days" You joke, and nearly laugh as Bob sits up, clearly a little offended.
"Excuse me, I am not deaf and also I have not been 'stuck in my book for days'. It's been like...1." Bob says, sending a smile back as he defends himself.
"At least 2." Bucky says matter-oh-factly, heading towards the door with Yelena in tow. "Alright you two- we're out. Don't cause any trouble, don't burn the tower down."
You decide to sell it just a little harder as you call at them right as they enter the elevator. "You sure you don't need our help with this one?"
"We know the people involved, we got it. Enjoy the break." Bucky replies, and Yelena sends you a wink right as the doors close.
A beat. Silence. The elevator makes a soft humming sound as the others descend down to the bottom of the tower and you make brave the storm, choosing to look over at Bob.
He's so red. You waste no time, barreling towards him on the couch, tackling him in an instant as he yelps, tossing his book on the floor before it accidentally gets bent.
“Woah-Jesus.” Bob has barely enough time to get the words before you tackle him on the couch, forcing the book out of his hands and tossing it gently on the floor next to you. You pause on top of him, his face red and his body heating up beneath you.
He sucks in a breathe. “Uh-hi…sweetie.” Bob’s voice cracks a little and you give him a smile.
“Hi Bob.”
“Can I um…can I help you?”
“I think you can.”
You pull him up by the collar of his shirt, and he finally takes the hint, his body pressing up against yours as he cups your face and crashes his lips against yours desperately. You run your fingers through his hair- the length longer now but still somehow knotless and silky.
You let out a quiet moan, trying to repress it. The two of you are desperate for each other, kissing and grabbing at hair and whatever skin is available. It’s not like you two haven’t done anything lately. But the desperation around the excitement of being alone in the tower was great.
Just two nights ago, Bob had been fingering you through your 3rd orgasm of the evening, his other hand free for you to suck on his fingers in a desperate attempt to keep you quiet at 2am.
You bring yourself back to the present as you let Bob tilt your face up so he can slip his tongue in your mouth. It’s warm against yours and you let out a quiet moan at the action. You whine softly as he pulls away from you to look at your face.
“Why are you being quiet?” Bob asks plainly. Your heart flutters as you try to find an answer.
“Um,” You swallow, steadying your voice. “Force of habit I guess. We’re not properly alone often.”
Bob looks you up and down, his hands sliding up under our shirt and you shiver, sucking in a breathe and waiting. But he stops right before his hands can glaze over your nipples.
You go to speak, but stop yourself and Bob tries not to smile.
“Yes?” Bob asks, feigning innocence as you hold back a whine.
“Bob…” Your voice is barely above a whisper. His fingers just brush delicately over the hardened tips before pulling back again.
“I can’t hear you sweetheart. I want to hear you.” His voice is low but more audible than yours and words send heat right to you core.
“Robert.”
“Yes sweetie?”
“Please.”
He takes pity on you, his fingers finally pinching the sensitive flesh , pulling you towards him as you fall into little him ravish your mouth again. You kiss him back, breaking the kiss only for a moment to tear his shirt off and throw it carelessly behind you.
You continue to whine quietly, and Bob finally has enough, breaking the kiss and gently pushing a hand into your hair before closing his fingers and gripping it harshly, pulling your head to the side so he can kiss the spot right below your ear.
“What did I say?” His voice sends shivers absolutely everywhere as he whispers directly into your ear and you try not to squirm, the firmness not new but still surprising.
“I-I can’t help it-.” You stutter, and Bob grips your hair harder and you finally let out a moan, echoing into the empty tower.
“I want to hear you.” Bob says again, continuing to kiss down your neck. He pulls away, grabbing the bottom of your shirt and giving you a look that says he’s asking for permission. After a quick nod, your shirt is off and on the floor next to his.
“Fuck-“ You whine loudly as he grips your nipples again, the cool air hitting them and making you squirm in his lap.
“That’s my girl.”
Bob makes quick work to flip you over on the couch, the air rushing out of as you hit the soft surface with surprising strength and force, his arms staying at your sides. You try to calm your beating heart, but the way he’s looking at you- like he wants to eat you- it’s too much.
“Pants. Now.” You demand, and Bob laughs, his hands reaching for your waistband, undoing the buttons slowly.
But it’s not him undoing the buttons on your jeans that makes you freeze. It’s what you hear that makes both of you freeze.
“Dude, we all hang OUT ON THAT COUCH!” You immediately recognise Bucky’s voice.
You look past Bob’s shoulder, seeing Bucky, Yelena, Walker and Ava. Ava has her hands over her eyes, and your face heats up so much you think you might actually combust.
“OFF!” You yell, pushing Bob a little too harshly off of you, but he’s already on it, tumbling onto the floor and throwing you your shirt as he scrambles for his as well.
“Oh this is so funny.” Yelena says, the biggest smile on her face. “Wait till I tell Alexei.”
“Fuck…” Walker says, reaching into his back pocket, pulling out a wallet and a $10 note, dropping it into Ava’s open hand, the other still over her eyes.
“I-what are you guys even doing here!?” You shirt is on, and you try to desperately smooth out your hair as well but it’s really no use.
“Turns out they were already on their way back, and we don’t have to go anymore.” Yelena shrugs.
You look at Bob, standing there with his shirt too big hanging off of his body, scrunching his arms around his body to keep himself from being perceived. You reach out and grab his hand and he relaxes slightly.
“They were gonna find out eventually.” You try to comfort him, and he gives a smile back.
“Wish it wasn’t like tha-.” Bob starts but is cut off by the elevator dinging and a loud voice with a Russian accent cutting him off.
“I FUCKING KNEW IT!”

"I am so utterly tired of this," I groaned, my voice heavy with exhaustion as I walked alongside Jace.
His hearty laugh echoed through the corridor, clearly finding amusement in my predicament, a cruel sort of merriment that only an older brother could revel in.
"Mother knows better than anyone how loathsome it was for her to parade around the realm in search of a husband. So why, in all the Seven Hells, must I suffer the same fate?" I grumbled, tugging at Jace's arm with a mixture of desperation and annoyance.
His grin only widened, mischief dancing in his eyes.
"You know that's not why she's making you do this," Jace replied, effortlessly guiding me toward the grand hall, where I knew far too many eager, power-hungry men awaited like vultures scenting blood.
"She simply wants a show—appearances, nothing more. You could refuse every single one of them, twice over, and she'd still be amused."
"I do not wish to endure this farce anymore," I muttered, forcing a practised, empty smile to settle upon my face as we crossed the threshold.
The buzz of voices hushed as our presence commanded the room, countless lords straightening, eyes alight with thinly veiled ambition.
Jace cast a sideways glance at me, a flicker of sincerity breaking through his usual playfulness.
"What would you have me do?" he asked, his tone turning uncharacteristically grave. I bit my lip, closing my eyes against the cacophony of noise, my heart pounding with an odd mix of frustration and resignation.
"Choose for me," I whispered, the words a surrender as I nodded, the weight of my decision pressing down on me. Jace stared at me, stunned.
"You would want me to—" he began, disbelief colouring his words. I reached for his hand, pulling him down beside me before he could say more.
"Do not jest, and do not mock. I trust you, Jace. You are my older brother. Choose someone worthy—someone kind and honourable. No one cruel, no one who would shatter what little peace I hold," I said, my voice low but firm.
My plea was raw and earnest, and I saw something shift in his eyes—a hint of moisture he quickly blinked away.
His gaze softened, and I rolled my eyes to break the tension, pinching his thigh hard enough to make him yelp.
"I trust you," I repeated, a ghost of a smile touching my lips. "Pick someone you would trust to be kind."
He studied me for a moment longer, then exhaled, a hint of nervousness betraying him as he turned his attention to the gathering crowd.
Ser Erryk had begun to announce the lords, each name a dull drumbeat in my ears. But then Jace leaned closer, his voice barely audible.
"Cregan Stark," he whispered.
I blinked, confusion clouding my features. "What?"
He nodded toward the entrance, where a tall, imposing figure with a warm smile strode purposefully into the hall. Lord Cregan Stark.
My heart stuttered as I recognized him—Warden of the North, my brother's friend. His smile grew as he greeted Jace with a strong embrace.
"I have chosen Lord Cregan Stark," Jace declared suddenly, standing and turning to the crowd. His voice rang with an authority that left no room for argument.
"My prince?" Cregan asked, stepping back and glancing at me with a mixture of surprise and cautious formality.
"Princess," he greeted, bowing slightly as I rose, fighting to keep my composure amidst the whirlwind.
"Jace, are you certain?" I asked, my voice low but urgent. "Do not simply choose a companion because he is familiar. Think this through," I implored. Jace's lips curved in a soft, genuine smile.
"He is kind. He is honourable. Above all, I trust him," Jace said, placing a reassuring hand on Cregan's shoulder, though the poor man's expression remained one of utter bewilderment.
"My lords," Jace announced, addressing the room. "The princess has made her choice."
"She has?" I whispered, incredulous, eyes darting between my brother and Cregan. The assembled nobles erupted into disgruntled murmurs, their dissatisfaction palpable.
Cregan's wide eyes met mine, his bewilderment almost comical.
"Jace, he hasn't even agreed!" I hissed through clenched teeth.
Jace turned to Cregan, feigning surprise at the oversight. "Ah, right. Lord Stark, would you accept the hand of my sister?"
I groaned inwardly, smacking Jace's arm with more force than was strictly necessary. "I was a fool to leave this in your hands," I muttered, my voice thick with regret.
Cregan cleared his throat, his deep voice calm despite the chaos. "My prince, I would be honoured, but—"
"Excellent!" Jace interrupted, beaming like a child who'd just gotten away with mischief.
"My deepest apologies, Lord Stark," I rushed to say, stepping forward. "We have thrust you into an impossible situation. My brother is a reckless fool, and I assure you, this can be undone. You owe me nothing."
Cregan opened his mouth as if to respond, then closed it, seemingly at a loss for words. His eyes flickered with a mixture of confusion and faint amusement, but he remained silent.
I turned my gaze toward the dispersing crowd of disgruntled lords and courtiers, who murmured their discontent as they made their way out.
My eyes snapped back to Jace, and I felt a surge of hot anger rising in my chest.
"You," I spat, each word dripping with exasperation, "are an idiot, a fool, and most importantly, soon-to-be-dead." I punctuated each insult with a slap to his arm, which he only half-heartedly tried to dodge.
Jace's expression was a mix of sheepishness and a smirk that betrayed far too much enjoyment of my ire.
"Princess, truly—" Cregan began, his deep voice calm and measured, but I cut him off with a wave of my hand.
"My lord, I insist," I said, my tone urgent but polite. "Please, attend to whatever matters have brought you so far south. I will see that this... misunderstanding is corrected." I shot Jace a furious glare and shoved him aside.
"Go on," I added, more to myself than anyone else, already plotting how I might fix this mess.
As I strode purposefully toward Ser Erryk, my blood still boiling, I extended my hand with a commanding air.
"Ser Erryk, your sword. For just a moment," I demanded, my voice firm.
The knight hesitated, glancing between me and Jace, whose eyes had widened in genuine alarm as he rapidly shook his head.
"Princess, perhaps it would be wise to reconsider—" Ser Erryk began cautiously, his hand not moving from the hilt of his sword. The edge of his voice suggested he'd rather face a dragon than step into the sibling quarrel unfolding before him.
I let out a groan of frustration, turning back to Jace, who had the audacity to grin, albeit nervously. I pointed an accusing finger at him, my voice sharp.
"You will listen to whatever Lord Stark has to say. You will grant whatever request he makes. Then, and only then, will you come find me—so I can kill you myself," I declared, each word laced with the promise of retribution.
Jace's grin faltered slightly, and he swallowed, but a trace of his usual bravado remained.
"Understood, sister," he replied, a hint of humour still lingering despite the severity of the situation.
Jace had always been both my greatest tormentor and my fiercest protector.
His ability to infuriate me in one moment and remind me of his steadfast loyalty in the next was a skill honed over years of sibling rivalry.
Yet now, as his antics threatened to reshape my entire future, I couldn't decide whether I wanted to strangle him or thank him.
Spinning on my heel, I stormed out of the hall, the thud of the great doors closing behind me echoing like a drumbeat.
My footsteps reverberated down the stone corridors as I sought a moment of solitude—a moment to cool the fire raging within me.
─── ✦⋅♡⋅✦ ───
Dinner that evening was a grand affair. The great hall was bathed in the warm glow of flickering candlelight, casting long shadows on the stone walls.
The scent of roasted meats, spiced wine, and freshly baked bread filled the air, mingling with the low hum of conversation.
I entered with a mix of trepidation and resignation.
The events of the day still burned vividly in my mind, and I could already sense the watchful eyes of courtiers waiting for any sign of discord or scandal.
I moved to my usual seat at the long table, and as I did, Jace approached, a mischievous smile playing at his lips.
For a brief moment, it seemed he might take the seat beside me, but at the last second, he hesitated. His eyes met mine with a flicker of guilt—or was it amusement?—before he strode deliberately to the far end of the table, placing as much distance between us as possible.
I rolled my eyes, feeling a pang of annoyance and, perhaps, a twinge of disappointment. I steeled myself for another night of tense silence and forced pleasantries.
Just then, a shadow fell across my seat. I looked up, surprised to see none other than Cregan Stark standing there.
His presence seemed to command the attention of the entire room. Tall, broad-shouldered, and with a bearing that spoke of quiet strength, he inclined his head respectfully.
"May I join you, Princess?" he asked, his voice low and rumbling.
I blinked, momentarily at a loss for words. Heat crept up my neck, and I hoped the dim light would mask the blush that rose to my cheeks.
"Of course, my lord," I replied, perhaps a touch too quickly.
He took the seat beside me, and I was keenly aware of his nearness—the brush of his arm as he settled himself, the faint scent of northern pine that clung to him.
Across the table, my mother, Rhaenyra, regarded us with a knowing smile. "Well done, my love," she said, lifting her goblet in a subtle toast. "An excellent choice for a husband."
I nearly choked on my wine. "No, Mother," I protested, setting the goblet down with more force than necessary. "This was not my doing. Jace was being impulsive and foolish, as he so often is."
Rhaenyra arched a regal brow, amusement sparkling in her eyes.
"Is that so?" she asked, her tone almost playful. "Well, it seems Lord Stark disagrees."
I turned sharply to Cregan, who met my gaze steadily. There was no trace of discomfort in his expression; instead, he looked resolute, even gentle.
"If you will have me, Princess," he said, his voice warm and sincere, "I would be truly honoured."
My heart skipped a beat. Time seemed to slow, and for a moment, all the sounds of the great hall—the laughter, the clinking of plates, the rustling of fine garments—faded into the background.
I glanced at Jace, who was watching from across the room with a smug, self-satisfied grin.
I shot him a glare, but it held no real malice. His plan, reckless as it had been, seemed to have worked better than even he could have anticipated.
I turned back to Cregan, searching his eyes for any hint of hesitation, any sign that this was a mere formality. But there was none.
"Of course," I blurted, my voice a mix of nerves and excitement. "Of course, I will have you."
His smile was genuine and relieved. We began to speak then, softly at first, exchanging pleasantries and stories.
We spoke of Winterfell, of his travels, of the Northern customs that differed so much from those of the South. He asked me of my own life, and for once, I found myself speaking freely, without the need to measure every word.
His interest was genuine, and his laughter, deep and rich, filled the spaces between courses.
Throughout the meal, our conversation flowed effortlessly, punctuated by shared glances and moments of unspoken understanding.
It was as if the rest of the hall melted away, and we were the only two people in the room.
I caught Jace's eye once or twice, and he raised his goblet in a silent toast, a look of smug triumph on his face.
I would have thrown something at him if I weren't so... happy.
As the evening wore on, I realized that this was the best possible outcome—an arrangement born of chaos and impulse that somehow, against all odds, felt right.
By the end of the dinner, my earlier frustration had all but disappeared, replaced by something far more promising.
As the last of the courses was cleared away, Cregan turned to me, his expression shifting from lighthearted to something more serious, more vulnerable. He leaned closer, and I felt the air between us grow heavy with anticipation.
"I truly did not anticipate this, Princess," he whispered, his voice low and intimate, meant for my ears alone.
His words carried a hint of wonder, as if he too marveled at the unexpected turn of fate that had brought us here.
A flutter of nerves stirred in my chest, and I couldn't bring myself to meet his gaze.
Instead, I focused on the way his thumb traced a slow, careful path over his goblet as if searching for the right words.
Hesitantly, as though testing the waters, he reached for my hand. His fingers brushed against mine, warm and reassuring, and then settled over them.
The touch was gentle, almost tentative, as if he feared I might pull away.
"But I am ever so pleased," he said, his voice a soft rumble that sent a shiver down my spine.
His eyes searched mine, and there was no mistaking the sincerity in his gaze—the promise of respect, kindness, and something that could become more.
My breath caught, and I found myself squeezing his hand in return, a silent answer to the unspoken question that lingered between us.
"As am I," I whispered, the words barely audible, but the truth of them resonated within me.
In that moment, beneath the flickering candlelight and the watchful eyes of our kin, the tension melted away, replaced by something softer, something I dared to hope could last.
Perhaps Jace's reckless gamble had been worth it after all.
A/n - Everybody say thank you older brother Jace, this was so fun to write asw was lowkey giggling whilst typing away (lowkey got me out of a writing slump) 😝
