i was reading an interview with isayama earlier and he talked about this aspect of historia in it
"Interviewer: You said '[I] decided the structure of the narrative beforehand and then created characters to match that narrative', but are there any characters that changed greatly from the character image you had in mind?
Isayama: Christa. When I first started to create the work called Attack on Titan, I thought that it would be easier to move the narrative forward if I had introduced many characters at the beginning, so I thought I should create the main 10 [characters] to start. At that time, I wrote her with the thought that readers might enjoy it if there was a cute character, what they call 'moe' (T/N, basically a caricature of often pedophilic feminine 'ideal', with a particular emphasis on helplessness), but she ended up being a character who was completely empty aside from just 'being cute' (laughs). So, to start, I had absolutely no fun drawing Christa. But as the story advanced, 'being empty' instead became Christa's personality. Her superficial exterior was good, but in fact she had no interiority to call 'herself', to say that she was empty. The outcome of ridding herself of her prior existence of 'meeting demand', that personality has become helpful from the standpoint of thinking about the narrative's development too, and she has now become one of the characters that I like."
