you are so real for being uncomfortable with hiruzen and orochimaru's relationship

Like if we're being truthful, we don't get to see much of what Hiruzen's relationship with the Sannin, but what little we do get isn't good.

He gives a speech about Orochimaru having malice as a child, but presents no actual evidence of this. At the same time he praises Orochimaru's intellect to the point that he causes Jiraiya to view Oro as a rival. Rivalries are of course a theme in Naruto, but it's usually born of wanting to improve one's skills. With Oro and Jiraiya, its specifically that Jiraiya is envious of the praise Oro gets from Tsunade and Hiruzen. Tsunade's a kid, so she shouldn't get any blame here, but Hiruzen is old enough and experienced enough to see what's going on. The problem is that he wants them to be rivals.

Speaking of: when Kakashi did the bell test with Team 7, the goal was to teach them about teamwork. When Hiruzen did it with the Sannin, the lesson was much more literal and he had Orochimaru and Tsunade leave Jiraiya tied to a stump. Instead of teamwork, he's once again pitting them against each other.

Side note, he generally sucks as a teacher. We see Jiraiya learned a lot more from the toads than he did from Hiruzen, Tsunade's fighting style doesn't emulate his at all, and as mentioned he seems to give Orochimaru a little too much attention.

Going back to the stump scene, when he and Jiraiya are alone there's the "joke" of him wanting to do some peeping with Jiraiya. Who is 6. He wants to tag along and do some voyeurism with a 6 year old. Even Jiraiya can tell this is weird!

Calling back to an old post of mine: This official art probably isn't meant to be read into, but I can't help but think how it symbolizes that separation between the Sannin, enforced by Hiruzen

Oh yeah and then we have this "endearing" moment:

A lot of people find this moment heartwarming, reading it as "Hiruzen still loves Orochimaru despite them being evil" etc. Personally? I hate this. To me it reads as him rejecting any responsibility for how Orochimaru turned out. He ignores the angry adult they've become and mentally replaces them with a silent child.

To top it all off, Orochimaru went from being a quiet, introverted child to a twisted, manic adult who's perfectly fine with using then discarding people, including children. Could this behavior have come out of nowhere? I suppose so. But an outside influence seems a lot more likely.

Overall his relationship with all of the Sannin ranges from unhelpful to creepy, and he's definitely one of the biggest factors in all three of them turning into such broken adults.

A recap and a lesson for fandom newbies -

We have this CANON ACCURATE fanart of Arya Stark from the incredibly talented Tonyloom with the long face, brown hair and grey eyes dressed for feast time at Winterfell as the daughter of the Warden of the North.

A Sansa fan gets triggered by this Arya fanart because it's different from ones that Sansa stans usually like for their 'Stark sisters' fanart - where Arya is drawn dark skinned to highlight Sansa's fair complexion because Sansa is beautiful and Arya is ugly, where Arya is missing teeth, always a sword in hand, messy hair being braided by Sansa to conform to what Sansa likes etc. - and goes on an insane rant about how Arya fans don't want Arya to be ugly because of equating goodness to beauty....

So Arya fans respond to this attack on the fan artist and point to the book text where several characters call Arya pretty and beautiful and ask why they should consider the character ugly when she is not in the text of the books.

A BNF then jumps into the discourse and reblogs the 'Arya is ugly and Arya fans have internalized misogyny' post and pretends that Arya fans are the ones starting this whole discourse on Arya's looks.

BNF tags it as 'This is weird discourse, who cares if Arya is pretty'. Who cares if Arya is pretty? The weird, racist Sansa stan that you reblogged the post from, who got triggered by some Arya fan art and had to go on an entire rant, that's who. Who cares? Well you cared enough to reblog an 'Arya is ugly' post and point fingers at Arya fans, that's who.

And now the BNFs reblog spreads like wildfire amongst the casual fans and we have many who actually think that canon Arya is ugly and Arya fans just have internalized misogyny. This, children, is how the many wrong but popular fanon gets created.

Remember, this BNF had nothing to say about racist Arya fanart. Nothing to say about sexist posts where Arya is masculinized and her femininty stripped from her. Nothing to say about the many posts from Sansa stans/Jonsa shippers about how Jon is repulsed by Arya's ugliness and loves Sansa because she is so beautiful.

But they had to step in and make sure everyone knew that Arya is ugly and it's Arya fans who are the problem.

This is actually nothing new. The reason there is so much wrong misinformation about Arya and Daenerys, and the way this fandom has opinions about these two female characters, is because it's been crafted over decades of fandom BNF's spreading posts and meta like this through BNF blogs like Asoiafuniversity. Explained so well in this post here:

Villainizing Arya fans as 'bad fans' has long been a thing in fandom. Asoiafuniversity, which was the goto place for all things asoiaf in those days, had actual posts equating Arya fans to Walter White fans from Breaking bad who hated on his wife Skylar.

Keep in mind, this is an actual quote from a post on the most popular asoiaf blog when the fandom was very active:

The interesting thing about Arya is that unlike most of the male Bad Fan icons, she doesn’t have a wife to embody her Bad Fans’ frustrations and serve as an outlet for their ire – no Betty Draper, no Skyler White, no Carmela Soprano. Instead, she has a sister, Sansa, who winds up serving the same function. Much of Bad Fandom is a gendered phenomenon, pulling for he-man figures against shrewish wives who just don’t understand them. It’s fascinating to see how the phenomenon can alter itself to accommodate a female-female pairing while still targeting characteristics we typically gender female. The Bad Fan is nothing if not durable.

So much toxic sexism masquerading as feminism, where they equate Arya fans to the chuds who hate female characters and whose unfair target is Sansa because she is 'female'. And Arya is a 'he-man' figure....The mind boggles.

But this was the typical vile sexist garbage Bnfs were spewing about both Arya and Daenerys in the days when fandom was most active and this is where a majority of the sexist opinions about Arya and Dany comes from.

This is why these canonically wrong aspects of these characters are so widespread and entrenched in fandom thought that it doesn't matter if we use actual book quotes to show that it's the exact opposite.

I feel like some people can't be/refuse to be educated, or they're deliberately being obtuse because they're trolls, psyops, or they just fell for the trolls and psyops. But its still good to point out where they're wrong and to give actual, you know, facts, for the benefit of other people reading who might actually be reachable.

yeah, I mean I usually ignore them because usually its bad faith and when a post is getting hundreds even thousands of notes in a day you just can't keep up with the 10-20-ish people who say something, particularly if its in the tags because thats just hard or fighting in the replies which always feels weird

I'm not a big deal but I remember I did one of my "what Biden did this week" posts and it had the student loan debt forgiveness for people who got defrauded by the Art Institutes, and a few people added their stories of being defrauded and being in debt to AI for years and the one that'll stay with me was an older guy who went to try to get a new degree to get a job in a different field kinda late in the game, his 50s or 60s and of course didn't get the jobs he hoped for because scam college and saying how he thought he'd die in debt and it was all gone, all forgiven. So just like people flippantly dismissing a very real life changing thing is very annoying

oh, probably, thanks for asking about that. reason enough to dust off the tag one more time (hopefully for the last time). (it’s been one day. 🤦‍♀️) and yeah, it’s been sitting with me too.

let’s start simple: fandom is supposed to be fun. it’s where you go to enjoy the thing. escape a little. share ideas. make jokes. remember when that was actually the vibe? feels like a lifetime ago.

now? feels like we flipped the ratio. theories, sure, but also callouts, paranoia, blocking wars, and a whole genre of posts dedicated to proving whose disappointment is more righteous. (spoiler: there is no justice. 😬)

people spend hours explaining how strangers both actors and fellow fans are bad. and it’s giving... messy breakup energy. (if you’ve spent less time analyzing your ex than you do decoding luke and nicola’s social media... maybe that’s a sign.)

look, i get it. we care. we’re human behind the screen. but no one ever changed their mind because of a tumblr reblog war. you can’t control what other people believe. you can control your own narrative. your own experience.

that’s literally what good pr does it doesn’t argue. it curates. (and say what you will about luke and nicola, but ignoring the drama? they’ve nailed that. maybe we should take notes.)

if you hate the theories? mute them. tired of the tone? curate your dash. don’t like someone’s vibe? don’t engage.

there’s a difference between calling something out and just escalating the noise. rage can be good. some of the best commentary i’ve seen was sharp, critical, even angry, but crafted. you know those youtube essays breaking down a bad movie or a true crime spiral? they don’t need insults. they just lay it out. there’s an art to that kind of critique.

and fan theories? they’ve always been around. from true crime subreddits to swiftie timelines to 2010s tumblr lore. people like puzzles. they like building narratives. this fandom’s no different. except sometimes the energy turns inward.

but when the goal shifts from “interesting take” to “who looked crazier while insulting someone else”... we’re not doing media analysis anymore. we’re just keeping score.

i’ll say this: conflict that alienates your own audience? never a good sign.

and if we had more content from the actors, i doubt this spiral would’ve happened. so no — i’m not blaming fans. they chose ambiguity. that’s their right. we chose to spiral. that part’s on us.

so maybe, instead of trying to win every argument, and we try something radical: take a breath. remember why we came here. stop performing disappointment for each other. start protecting our own joy.

p.s. i still think most people behind the screen are probably great. 🫶 but no fan theory is worth your peace of mind. don’t forget that.

i can’t speak for everyone, but i came here by accident. just trying to distract myself from some bad days. and when i suddenly feel the urge to fight for justice in the tags? that’s usually my sign to take a break. this time, i chose to stay. chose to focus on what they actually show us and maybe read a bit more about how fan dynamics work. just for my own peace of mind.

on this blog, though, we mainly just post and reblog stuff related to any of our identities. Like stuff about being therian, plural, lgbtq, etc. As well as the other random tumblr things we find. Oh and politics occasionally

Commision/artsy stuff- We do a lot of creative stuff. We do (nondigital & typically not colorized) art (our pfp is a drawing of ours), sometimes various crafts (for example, we made a mask of one of our theriotypes), we are in a local choir, and sometimes write music, poetry, and stories (though we've never really posted that stuff before). We do (free) commissions/requests if anyone happens to be interested. We're short on time these days, so it may take a while to get it to you, but feel free to send us an ask/message regarding it if youd like! (Note, if theres something you want, and its not listed here, just ask- theres a good chance we'll make it. Like alter packs or mood boards, for example)

Im regularly returning to admire your piece featuring Tavington and Wilkins on their picnic. The dapples on their clothes where the sunlight is coming through the leaves are so impressive and life-like.

I also love how relaxed Tavington continues to be in your work, either dozing off or just waking up in Wilkins' lap.

Ive noticed, though, that several of your recent works have had a comment from someone asking if you do commissions. I'm not sure if it's the same person or not, but it's weird they keep doing it given that I haven't seen you respond. Do you know what they want? I'm just curious. Feel free to ignore this or answer privately if you prefer.

Aww, thank you so much @lyledebeast ! I’m glad you like it so much that you keep returning to it <3 The dappled sunlight was my favorite part to do, I thought it would tie everything together quite nicely. It makes me quite happy that you think it looks impressive :)

It’s for sure become my favorite way to draw Tavington <3 Sometimes I worry I’m drawing him too out of character lol. It gives me some relief you enjoy how I’ve been portraying him.

About those comments I get concerning commissions , they’re just scam bots. I’ll usually delete and block them after going through their blogs and seeing how they interact with other's art. They’re fairly easy to spot since their blogs have random banners, and you can find the same comment asking about commissions in their reblogs or likes. They follow the vague art tags (#art, #digital art, etc.) and just comment on as many posts as possible in hopes one will stick. It’s just a little annoying having to go through each one to make sure it’s not a real person who is asking, but it’s not harmful to me since I don’t take commissions to begin with :)

Well, Lets start somewhere!

Like it or not, YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY READ STUFF PEOPLE WRITE. Before you follow, before you comment, before you interact, because if you come across something you don't like, or you started to assume things— that's a you problem and not the fault of the poster.

If you DO NOT enjoy a character, a pair of ship, or a certain head cannon, filter the tag it's used for, Google has free tutorials on how. Most social media have these settings and most decent posters tag their posts correctly. If you keep seeing that pair, you can block the people who create it. You are free to do so ofc but WHY WOULD U come on main and air that out? Personally I find it so bizarre and it could show the type of person you are to other people — a toxic company over fictional substance — and I'd say that is not a flex, more like showing your dirty nappy in public. Those characters you love are not real and so not effected by your high ground stance, but actual humans that share you that love notice and get that impression, and it's a weird one. You SHOULD, of course, set your boundaries, and usually where that is be in your profile, on your bio or a pinned post.

Loving bizarre, villainous, creepy concepts DOES NOT EQUAL morality, nor loving good sunshine and flowers does. It's what a person does in real life what counts, not what they consume in entertainment. In fact, it is not a sign of a good person those who be shaming humans who like different fictional concepts. Or when someone keeps using ai generators knowing full well it's based on constant data theft of all sort of human creators across generations and can not exist without the continuance of this theft. Or those supporting creators that they know did irl crimes. Or those who are Policing what's can and cannot go into fiction as if the fickleness of preference have never let alot of things survive its judgement. And I can go on with the miniature examples. You are forgiven if you did not know before, some people learn through experience, but not anymore when you continue this behaviour. And maybe if you can't differentiate between reality and fiction, and what's more important than what, maybe, just maybe, you shouldn't be consuming fiction.

DO NOT POST WHAT YOU DID NOT CREATE. Do you like it when people keep posting your selfies that you only ment to share for funsies and what not? Isn't worse if you did not post that selfie in the first place or never wanted it to be used like that? It's the SAME FOR ART. This is the artists work just as much as your face is yours. Social media at the baseline is about who ever the poster is, their posts are theirs. So you posting an artist's drawing, with no permission, no credit to them, no nothing, is not allowed and people can report that. Don't be an ignorant thick fig and play the victim when schooled like this precious dear\s .Reposters disconnect so many content from their creators and this is how alot of beautiful things in life die, by simply not knowing they are loved, shoved into the over consumption machine..

And lastly, You don't have anything nice to say to OP? Don't say anything! It's not your misguided duty to educate people on how embarrassingly self centered you are, it's okay to be a basic #&★— I promise. It okay to feel out of place in a niche that doesn't concern you. It's okay to realise other people have different perspectives of the fiction work you enjoy. You can sit down.

Submissions are open for new polls

Since it was a majority yes vote on my survey about whether or not people want to see more polls from this blog, I'm opening up submissions! Please note that my tagging system will probably differ from the original posts, but I will still include the website in the tags.

If you'd like to see a new "which item would you prefer" polls on this blog, please feel free to submit posts now.

How to submit

If you submit me two links, I'll make a poll for those items. I have a google form here for submitting links (since the ask box doesn't let you link to websites)

If you submit a week long completed poll on mobile - as in one that has pictures of the items, I will post it as is. (Barring some limitations. If I feel I can't post what you submitted I'll reach out to you.) Please include either the name of the website or links to one or both of the items for tagging purposes.

If you can't or don't want to do either of those, you can send an ask with the names of two items and the website that you found them on. (However there is a risk that I might not be able to find the items if you choose this way to submit)

If you are submitting your own etsy page or own work as an independent artist, I will happily create a poll if you request me to pick two items from your store. To do this you can send me an ask with the name of your store, or you can link it in the google form. You can also pick two items yourself and submit those as usual if you want.

In the spirit of the original blog, if you are sending someone else's etsy or similar items please do not pit two different artists against each other. If anyone for any reason submits two different independent artists for the one poll, I will have to instead run them as separate polls and pick a second item myself for each artist

Like on the original blog, Etsy pages and other independent art pages will be linked to, but product pages for bigger sites will not be linked. The tags will have the site listed

There are some finer details to point out:

There will be tags for the new polls to differentiate them from the old polls. Both for the sake of making it clear what's new and what's not, and also so that people who don't want new polls can ignore them lol.

I know some people wanted it, but I am going to continue to uphold the lack of a "neither" option. Especially considering some items are likely to be somebody's etsy art and that would be disheartening for them to see.

At this time I cannot accept requests based on general themes. For example, if you send me an ask requesting a poll between two dresses, but you do not link the specific dresses, I unfortunately don't have the brain space to turn that into a poll at the moment.

I will not be posting any of these polls until all of the archived posts are out of the queue, so that it's clear which posts are new and which posts are from the original blog.

I will most likely queue submissions and polls to be once a day.

I still have to decide if I have time to create polls that aren't based on submissions, and will update later. I have some ideas but not enough to build a proper queue with my own ideas. For now, the only polls that get made and posted will be based on submissions.

My time zone is in Australia, so that would likely lead to posts going up at weird times for most people. To mitigate this, I'll either reblog the posts after they go up at a particular time in the EST time zone, or I'll change the time zone for the sake of the queue. Probably to EST because that's what the original blog was in.
