Molten Gold - Chapter 7

Synopsis: Druig & Nara - best friends, pen pals, and idiots too stubborn to admit each other’s feelings. She assumes he doesn’t care, he assumes she’s found someone else. For over 500 years, he’s kept her letters, while she resists the urge to send more. Hopefully, the end of the world might knock some sense into them both.
Chapter: 7/8 (Chapter 1; Chapter 2; Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6)
Pairing: Druig x OC!Fem!Eternal (named Nara)
Warnings: Major violence, angsty
Word count: ~1135
A/N: One more chapter (I think) to go, guys! This was my first ever fic, after years of casual reading and secret writing, so I really appreciate everyone's likes and comments! Thanks for sticking around for all these chapters! Enjoy~
The Domo’s hatch door slides open. The Eternals’ last moments of silence are put to an end by the ominous gurgling of an erupting volcano.
Nara’s armor hugs her body perfectly, even after centuries of disuse. Stark white, with red patterned trimmings. An inverse image of Druig’s.
“When this is all done,” the telepath gives her hand a slight squeeze, scanning the rugged terrain below. “I’ll take you back to that bar, if it still stands, and we’re going to dance until we drop.”
“Are you asking me out, Dru?” Nara smiles, her eyes sparkling with adoration.
“What do you say, m’darling?” Druig raises an eyebrow. He nudges her playfully with his shoulder, and their bracelets – golden bands that serve to connect them to the Uni-mind – clink.
“It’s a date then. You’d better not be late.”
The Domo glides over the beach. As soon as their feet touch the white sand, the Uni-mind is activated, with Druig as the central link. Spreading his arms, he lets the golden celestial energy lift him up. Power surges through his veins, and he can feel them all. Thena’s grief, Sersi’s determination, Makkari’s loyalty, Phastos’s devotion to his family. Nara’s love.
The ground quakes, the planet’s crust crumbling as the newborn Celestial emerges. Druig’s eyes take on a golden hue, and his mind makes a tenuous connection with Tiamut’s. The god-like being, still half buried in the ground, halts as he grapples with the unfathomable depths of its psyche.
He’s still suspended in the air when a searing pain in his back breaks his concentration. The impact throws him out of balance, and he plummets unceremoniously to the beach beneath.
Ikarus.
The traitor swoops down like a hawk on prey, pulling Druig up by his neck. The other Eternals, suddenly released from the Uni-mind, are nowhere near.
“I should have done this 500 years ago,” Ikarus groans, dragging his former comrade up into the air. Gaining more height until he finally decides to let go.
And there’s nothing Nara can do as Ikarus murders the love of her life – pummels him without mercy into the side of the volcano, burying him under six feet of rocks and lava.
She can hear Makkari’s gut-wrenching scream, but she herself cannot utter a single sound.
“It’s over,” Ikarus doubles back, as if to gloat. “Druig’s gone.”
Big mistake. Makkari moves too quickly for him to react, running endless circles around him, while Nara conjures up flames. A tornado of fire and sand. Suffocating the bastard.
But they both know it wouldn’t be so easy. Ikarus takes but a couple of moments to regain his composure, laser vision piercing through the women’s combined attack.
Makkari breaks off, unleashing a barrage of sonic booms to force Ikarus back. Grabbing him by the back of his neck and shoving him roughly against a cliffside.
When he manages to repel her, Nara immediately takes over. Double, triple jabs with her spear’s blazing blade. Relentless slashes, going for the throat. Or those wicked eyes.
The appearance of the Deviant responsible for Gilgamesh’s demise makes little difference, even as it draws Thena away from the fight.
Nara sees nothing but red. Her entire body coated with raging flames, pushing her muscles to the limit. Breaking through Ikarus’s parries with sheer ferocity. One misstep on his part, and the blond finds himself with cuts all over.
“Enough!” He fumes, rocketing off into the sky.
“Oh no, you don’t,” Phastos sneers, deploying contraption after contraption. Linking up the machines, creating an indestructible web in which he ensnares Ikarus.
“I’ve always wanted to clip your wings!” Shouts the inventor, bringing the strongest Eternal to his knees.
Makkari and Nara catch their breath, the latter still bristling with hate.
“It’s not going to hold,” Nara observes in a hushed tone. In the split second before he breaks out of his chains, she gets ready.
“They work…” Phastos stares in awe as the redhead leaps up after Ikarus. Under the soles of her feet are the wheels he’s crafted, spinning rapidly, little circles of fire.
The two warriors collide mid-flight. Going toe to toe. Nara brings one foot forward, fist extended all the way to the elbow. Body sinks downwards, gathering power in the upswing. Her fist makes contact with his chest plate. Ikarus recoils, grasp backward with left palm, hit straight with right fist. The blowback from their punches sends shockwaves through the surrounding area.
“I told you,” Ikarus glowers at her. His knuckles ram into her left cheek. His hands close around her neck. “I will kill you.”
“You’re pathetic,” she spits out.
“You’ll regret that,” Ikarus begins climbing higher and higher into the atmosphere. All the while his grip constricts around her throat. It’s getting harder to breathe. Impossible to speak.
But she’s not done yet. She’ll make him pay. Even if it means burning herself up.
火
It was a close call. The humans must have been spewing nonsense when they say your life flashes before your eyes when you’re about to die. Druig finds himself entertaining no such thoughts as he claws his way out of the rubble.
It wasn’t Ikarus’s intention, but that jerk has sent Druig straight to the source of the Emergence. The mouth of the volcano, oozing with lava.
The sun is a shock to his eyes once he’s back above ground, and his lungs are assaulted by the copious amounts of ash in the air. Worse for wear, but very much alive.
He can barely make out the outlines of Sersi’s armor through the smoke, but the green is unmistakeable. And standing near her is a smaller figure, clad in teal. He picks up his pace when he realizes Sprite has, quite literally, stabbed Sersi in the back.
All around, mirages appear. Mirror-images of the original volcano.
“It’s over now,” Sprite is giving a little speech, “We get to start anew, on another planet.”
Druig picks out a rock. Any rock, really. The first thing he can grab. And with years’ worth of annoyance, he hits the littlest Eternal over the head. Effectively laying her out.
“Well, that was very moving,” he mocks, discarding the rock and bending down to pull Sersi up.
“Thank you,” The new Prime takes care of Sprite’s knife by transforming it into liquid. Slightly shaken up by such a turn of events.
“I can’t do this,” Druig admits. “This is your fight now.”
Sersi nods affirmative. “What’s wrong?” She asks, as Druig stares off into the distance, a look of horror written all over his face. She turns to look in the same direction.
“Is that…?”
A streak of reddish-orange hurtling through the clouds. Like a comet crashing to Earth, heading straight for the ocean. But it’s too small to be a comet.

Freaky Forever
Aka the Eternals Freaky Friday AU no one asked for
At first, it was fun. In fact, waking up in Sersi’s body after they barely managed to stop the emergence seemed almost too good to be true.
Sprite held Sersi’s her hands in front of her and marveled at the long, delicate fingers. She stumbled her way to her feet and smiled at the amazing, adult height she was sure Sersi took for granted.
It was clear the others weren’t as thrilled about their circumstances.
Ajak (in Thena’s body apparently) was down for the count. Apparently body swapping wasn’t good for Thena’s fragile mental condition, and the illness had flared up as soon as Ajak regained consciousness in her body.
Ikaris, who could only be Kingo in the Eternal’s infuriatingly good looking body, was already sporting a nasty slash on the arm as evidence of Ajak’s attack. He sulked as Thena, in Ajak’s body, tried to figure out how to heal it.
He sucked in a breathe and whined piteously as Thena touched the slash, both expressions uncharacteristic on the usually stoic Ikaris’ face. Thena spoke in harsh tones all while she tenderly cradled the wound. Nurturing was never her strong suit, though she seemed to be trying.
Sersi, irritatingly, seemed to be taking waking up in Sprite’s body well. She was sitting near Kingo and Thena, talking in hushed tones with whoever was in Kingo’s body (likely Ikarus going by the current pattern and their disgustingly intimate body language).
Sprite couldn’t decide what disturbed her more, seeing that tender look on her own face or having it directed at Kingo. (She was probably most disturbed by the fact it was actually Ikaris looking at Sersi like that, when she’d only ever wanted him to look at her, but she tried not to consider that too hard.)
Druig walked up then, at least Druig’s body, with Phastos in tow. Druig was playing with the bracelet at his wrist, the one they’d used to mind meld earlier, while Phastos talked in a slightly irritated tone. It took Sprite a second to realize they were arguing.
“This is hardly something you’re going to figure out with hardware, Phastos. Especially without your usual power set,” Phastos was saying, and Sprite realized he must actually be Druig.
“We need to solve this with the mind,” he continued.
“I am using my mind to solve this,” Phastos (in Druig’s body) snapped back.
“You know what I mean,” Druig answered with a sigh. “Just let me help you. If we work together, we can figure this out. Just let me explain how it works.”
That was apparently the wrong thing to say.
“Explain to me??? Kid, I could talk circles around you!” Phastos fumed.
Clearly, someone was upset their new toy hadn’t functioned quite as intended.
“I’m not interested in some Vulcan mind meld mumbo jumbo, when I’ve got the nuts and bolts right her to guide me,” Phastos continued.
Druig sighed again, this time more angrily, and tossed his hands up. “Can’t teach an old horse new tricks,” he said, before pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Damn straight,” Phastos answered, not taking the bait.
Druig tried a new tactic.
“Look,” he said, pointing towards where Thena was still alternating between tending to and scolding the injured Kingo. “Even Thena has figured it out, you could at least give it a try.”
Thena took a moment to turn her frown from Kingo to Druig before seemingly deciding the comment wasn’t worth fighting over. That, or Druig just lucked out that Thena could no longer summon weapons in her current form.
Sprite could already tell Phastos still wasn’t going to be convinced. She was about to step in, when Sersi beat her to it, of course.
“You can at least try to help Ajak, Phastos,” she said in the even, reasonable tone of hers. Phastos, damn him, softened.
Everyone looked briefly relieved at the topic change, though Druig still seemed like he wanted to push it. Sprite stepped in before he could make another move.
“Why don’t you fill the rest of us in, Druig?” she said.
Sersi shot her a grateful look for the diversion, but Sprite brushed it off.
She wasn’t doing it for her. After all, she’d only just gotten this body. She didn’t want them to solve this little side effect too quickly. Not before she’d had a little fun at least.
Druig sighed angrily again, but some tension drained from his shoulders. Being unable to use his powers himself to do whatever he believed was necessary to fix this must be annoying.
Mikkari and Gilgamesh, the two last unaccounted for members of the team, noticing the change in atmosphere, came to join them. Sprite almost jumped out of her skin as Mikkari quietly (of course she was quiet, she always was) came up behind her.
Gilgamesh gave Druig almost the same scare, surprising him by placing a quiet hand on his shoulder. The touch initially jolted Druig, who looked confused, before Gilgamesh made a hand sign.
“It’s. Mikkari,” he followed up the sign with, haltingly. Druig blinked, surprised, before nodding in acceptance.
Gilgamesh (in Mikkari’s body apparently) nodded the affirmative, though when he attempted to sign he ended up saying something like, “I am hungry,” which may have been his intention, but Sprite highly doubted it. While they all knew enough signs to read what Mikkari said, making the signs was a lot different.
Now that everyone was assembled, Druig started.
“It’s the bracelets,” he said, which Sprite figured was kind of obvious at this point.
“Hold up, this is all because of our freaking friendship bracelets??” Kingo crowed.
Maybe not as obvious as Sprite thought. She stopped just short of rolling her eyes.
“They did what they were supposed to,” Druig continued, “getting us all out of our own heads and into one, but my guess is it scrambled us up when it tried to put us back.”
“So we’re stuck like this?” Sprite asked, trying not to sound too hopeful.
She had experience with being stuck in a body she never wanted. The others looked concerned at the prospect though.
Well, the others except one, Sprite noticed. Thena also looked thoughtful. What must it be like, to break things and be broken for so long, only to be put back together and given the power to heal?
Thena cast a guilty look to where Ajak was resting peacefully, finally, Phastos apparently having finally figured out how to use Druig’s power to knock her out.
Interesting.
Sprite noted it for later.
Druig was shaking his head and Sprite’s heart sank.
‘Please don’t let him have a solution already,’ she willed silently.
As if reading her thoughts (though Sprite was realistically sure that wasn’t in his usual power set and definitely not in his current Phastos-based one) Druig spoke up.
“I don’t have a solution yet, but if Someone would work with me,” (he tossed this over his shoulder to Phastos) I think we’ll have this sorted out soon.”
“Great,” Sprite said, not meaning it.
“Fine,” Phestos sighed in defeat. Ajak’s condition seemed to have drained the fight out of him. “What do you need me to do?”
“We’ll I’m thinking we’ll start on the internal, psycho drive,” Druig started, but Sprite interrupted.
“How long?”
“Impatient, Short-stack?” Phastos asked with a chuckle.
Sprite gritted her teeth and shrugged.
“I’d guess two, three days, tops?” Druig offered, “I’m not sure of all the technology stuff?” He looked to Phastos, who shrugged and nodded.
“As good an estimate as any, I suppose. We’re not exactly in charted territory here.”
Sprite quickly dropped out of the conversation as it devolved into technobabble. She had the information she needed anyway.
Three days. She’d be long gone before then. And if they couldn’t find her, they couldn’t ‘fix’ her.
Time for some fun.
====
“I just don’t know why it’s not working,” Phastos sighed in frustration, a few hours later.
“I have a suggestion!” Kingo piped up from where he’d started a tic tax toe game with Mikkari in the dirt. Seeing Gilgamesh hunched over the make shift game, an intense look on his face, was quite comical.
“What?” Druig asked warily, though not without some hope.
“Well if the movie is anything to go by, all we need to do to resolve this is overcome our personal differences and internal battles, discovering love and friendship along the way.”
Druig wasn’t even surprised. “What are you even talking about?” he asked tiredly, not sure he wanted to know.
“Freaky Friday!” Kingo answered. “It’s only a classic!”
“Forget I asked,” Druig said, rolling his eyes to the heavens as if asking the Celestials for strength.
“Hey has anyone seen Sprite?” Sersi suddenly asked, which was a strange question to see come from Sprite’s own face.
“Or T-H-E-N-A?” Gilgamesh signed out painstakingly, letter by letter.
“I think they left together to find water,” Mikkari offered, but Gilgamesh was shaking his (her?) head.
“Went to eye,” he signed, frowning when everyone looked at him blankly.
“Face. Head. Place,” he tried again.
Mikkari’s face cleared in understanding. “You mean the head of the Celestial?”
Gilgamesh nodded vigorously.
“For Cargo. Junk,” he signed.
“Sounds like they headed that direction to look for supplies,” Mikkari translated.
“I’ll go look,” Gilgamesh offered, miming running.
The others nodded in agreement, but one try was all it took for that plan to hit a wall, or a tree (quite literally).
Turns out using another Eternal’s abilities was quite difficult without practice, especially Mikkari’s speed. It was quite jarring if you weren’t used to it, Mikkari was quick to comfort Gilgamesh.
With the super speed out, the group has no choice but to take the old fashioned route.
It costs valuable time, time they could be using to fix this mess, but no one comments on it.
Finally, they reach the shore where their ship still sits, wrecked and in need of repairs. There’s no sign of Sprite or Thena, on the shore or the ship where they’d presumably go for supplies. An escape shuttle is however also conspicuous absent, and it takes everyone a minute for it to sink in.
Sprite and Thena were gone.

Prompt: Ancient Etheirys
((No, not sure what got me going this route instead of something from Kar’a’s point of view. ^_^;; However, touching on something that Karo is/still coming to terms with))
Amaurot crystalized into view as Karoiseka teleported to the ancient Atheryte. Dark spires loomed in the deep, air still preserved by Bismark’s magic. Lights shown from the multitude of sealed windows, knowing they were just empty props just as soulless as the streets below. The same few shades wandered the plaza, milling in the same repeated patterns, starting anew with their conversations with her. The silver-trimmed mask weighed heavy around her neck, gray robes blending in with the phantom occupants of the city for once. She wondered if the one would bother her about outlandish clothing if she went to speak with them now–she wasn't sure if she wanted that answer.
She hadn’t left the First yet, still shaken by her visit to the distant unsundered past via the Crystal Tower. In fact, she hadn’t even properly left the Tower to talk to those of the Crystarium after she had regaIned her energy, her mind awhirl. She would go say goodbye properly before heading back to the Source. Getting transported twelve thousand years into the past, re-meeting Emet, Hythlodaeus, Hydael–no, Venat. She thought Elidibus said she wouldn’t be able to change the past, but she obviously already had before even making the trip there. Her head hurt to think about it. Her heart hurt to think about it.
Emet, still jaded, but with a heart bigger than she had ever guessed. Venat, eyes bluer than blue, able to tug every last little truth from her, despite wanting to keep them all sheltered from it for as long as possible. Hermes–broken beyond measure, to morph into Amon and Fandaniel–ready to chase Meteion into oblivion–yet only trying to do good in that ancient time. Hythlodaeus, the new-old friend that felt like coming home; mischievous nature to mirror her own, but deep and serious and his breathless devotion to the star and his friends. And the missing piece spinning through it all, shadows and Echo flashes showing crystal-white hair, deep blue pools over purple freckles, and a ready smile and laughter ringing just out hearing range. Azem–Kar’a–Ikarus. Karo had pulled the names painstakingly from Hythlodaeus needing to know that much at least, despite the sense of being the wrong shape to fit in the empty space.
Karoiseka had been wandering the memorial of Amaurot, letting her thoughts overtake her. Nothing was going to bother her–not even the cubus–as she drifted aimlessly, letting– Dynamis?--lead her steps. She didn’t know exactly what she was looking for, knew that pushing it would make it scatter like the stars did whenever she thought too long about the lost constellations. The lesson that Venat had given her, to help her trigger the Echo, hammered in her heart. She had to see this city the way Emet did. She had to understand. To see sky instead of sea above the spires, to see the silver towers shine.
The Bard meandered for bells, waiting for–something. She had made her way back towards the Bureau of the Architect, when something deep within willed her feet to stop. The streetlamp shone a spotlight on a small resting area, just like hundreds of little spots just like it. This–this was different however. There was something lingering here. Not the shade of Hythlodaeus, (whom she wasn’t sure if she could honestly handle seeing at this moment) but a feeling born of someone real and tangible. Her knees almost buckled as she attempted to sit gracefully, failing spectacularly and glad that none of the Scions were there to witness it. Karo knew better than to attempt to summer her gift while standing–she’d only hit her head on the cobblestones and then where would she be? Bleeding and alone, no one left to find her.
Shaking the cobwebs from her head, she centered on the feeling that had gotten her to stop in the first place. Venat’s lesson rang in her mind as she concentrated on the emotions, pulling on what she could of her errant gift. It didn’t hurt like this, when she pulled it purposefully, unlike the sudden pangs she was used to snatching her away from reality. The world shimmered, almost overlapping with what she could currently see, before snapping into place, the unsundered city gleaming before her.
Tears unbidden streamed down her cheeks as breath was knocked out of her from the majesty surrounding. Without a doubt, Karo knew she would never ever be able to describe Amaurot to anyone, even the summoned Scions who had seen Emet’s recreation, with any onze of justice. Despite the uniformity of her people, the city was bursting with life, laughter, debate and learning in every corner that she could see from her fixated spot. As she watched, she could see the individuals shine through, personalities overwriting the identical robes. A trio caught her eye, walking up the ramp from the Bureau–two of the three masks catching the sunlight in bright contrast to the standard white and silver. The eyes of Hades red mask passed over her as the echo ghost she actually was, and the other mask caught and held her attention beyond all else that had before. The silver bird taking wing upon a star-lit sky, the bright sun symbol nearly glowing from the center.
Kar’azem, Emet, and Hythlodaeus between them (lavender braid peeking out from his hood), radiated brighter than the city itself. Hythlodaeus had his fingers entwined with Kar’a’s, and an arm linked with Emet’s. They looked so happy and at ease with each other, despite the obvious teasing and ribbing between Emet and Kar’a. The three settled on the bench to chatter as the Echo started to fray at the edges. It was enough though. Closing her eyes, Karo let the Echo fade, as she came back to the here and now, still seated.
She would be back, of that she was certain. She would find the little points of memory that Emet had left in his city and watch every one if she could. Maybe someday she would attempt to find the shade of Hythlodaeus on her own, and tell him how much she already missed his smile. Lyna would be worrying by now–if she hadn’t already been. The detour had been much needed so she could concentrate on all that was to come, but Karo didn’t know how long she had been gone from the First–much less the Source at this point, and with the Final Days in full swing–
She needed to get back. Standing with a sigh, she barely had to think about the Crystarium’s aetheryte, still a second home to her, and with a pop, left one city for another.

Things We Do for Love: Part 14
Third Part to Such a Thrill and The Devil is in the Details
Leon rolled over and was met with a lick. He scrunched his face and sat up before giving Ember a quick belly rub. Seeing that the bedroom door was ajar, Leon figured Karina was out on the balcony. He stood and stretched before walking towards the door, pausing once he heard voices. After listen for a bit more, he realized it was Karina and her mother having a conversation.
"Why did you leave Canada? Everything was fine here until you decided you needed to come back."
"I didn't like it there. Work was fine but I was…lonely. I came back to take care of a few things and I met up with Leon and I just, I missed him so much. My residence at the museum was up and I was ready to come home."
He heard her mother scoff. "You do realize that the whole point of cutting you off was to get you away from Leon, don't you?"
There was along pause before Karina answered. "Why did you want to get me away from Leon?"
"Because he is Marius's friend first and foremost."
Another pause. "You're saying I don't deserve to be with a man who I love and who makes me happy because Marius doesn't like it?"
"Your brother doesn't deserve to lose his friend because you have a silly little crush. Obviously you are enamored but I doubt he feels the same towards you."
"It's not a crush, we're married."
"Divorced."
"We never filed. We were going to but when we met up to sign the papers it was clear that wasn't what either of us wanted."
"He wanted children."
"Mama, please."
"What?" She scoffed again. "Do you think it's normal that you don't want to have children? How long do you think it's going to take Leon to realize that there's something wrong with you? He's obviously going to leave you anyway, why not keep your inheritance in the long run?"
"There's nothing wrong with me." Karina's voice quivered as if she was trying to convince herself as much as her mother.
"Do you honestly think Leon is going to stick around if you're not willing to give him children? Look at him and then look at you, even before he enhanced his physique he was out of your league. There is absolutely nothing special about you that another woman could not give him and if you keep being as needy as you've come across this weekend then you're going to actively drive him away."
At that point, Leon had heard enough. He walked in to the sitting room and sat down next to Karina on the chaise before turning his attention to her mother. "Leave. Just go. Please."
Rolling her eyes, Karina's mother stood but stopped as she looked at Karina. "Go wash your face. You've made a mess of yourself."
With that, she walked out.
Leon waited a moment before he turned towards Karina. "Maus?"
"Mausi?" Karina had started walking back towards there bedroom but had yet to respond. Finally, he raised his voice. "Karina!"
"What?" She finally stopped and turned to face him, wiping at the mascara smudged under her eyes and on her cheeks.
Leon inhaled, reminding himself to not take her current mood personally. "I just wanted to make sure you were ok. I'll give you space if that's what you want, but I think you should call Dr. Kattan."
"I'm fine." She shook her head slightly as she turned to walk back. "It's nothing."
He followed her to the bedroom. "I wouldn't call that nothing. Has your mother always spoken to you like that?"
"Like what?" Karina stood in front of the sink and turned the tap on so she could splash some water on her face. "She's just making sure that I keep things in perspective."
Leon felt his voice catch in his throat. It was upsetting to him to hear the way Karina's mother spoke to her but once he realized that she perceived that to be normal it just about broke his heart. "She was berating you."
Karina turned off the tap and dried her face with a towel. "She's not wrong."
"Yes, she is." He moved directly next to Karina now. "I know that you have worked really hard to learn to love yourself and be proud of your achievements. It really bothers me to see your mother undo that in the span of ten minutes."
Karina didn't respond but she allowed Leon to embrace her.
"I will always support you in whatever you need," Leon rested his hand on the back of Karina's neck as he held her against his chest. "And I don't want you to think I'm telling you what to do but…I can't think of why you'd continue to subject yourself to your family."
She stayed silent for a while but laid her head against his shoulder and thumbed the hem of his shirt while leaned into him. "What else am I supposed to do? I thought they cut me off but then I get in trouble for not pushing to get in contact…I don't know what they want from me."
"I get the feeling that they're going to keep moving the goalposts." Leon briefly rested his head against hers. "Maybe you should just take a break from them."
Karina frowned, bewildered as she stepped back to look at him. "How am I supposed to take a break from them when they're in my house?"
Leon shrugged as he let the corner of his mouth lift in a half smile. "I might have made us dinner reservations at Ikarus."
"When did you do that?" She mirrored his smile as if she was only cautiously allowing herself to be happy about it.
"Last night." His smile grew when Karina seemed to visibly relax. "I thought you'd enjoy a little time away."
Karina couldn't stop herself from beaming now as she nearly flung herself at Leon, squeezing him as tightly as she could. "How is it that you always seem to know exactly what I need?"
"We can celebrate you finally being out of the walking boot." Leon smiled as he leaned in to kiss her. "Now, do you want me to bring you up some breakfast?"
With a sigh, Karina shook her head without removing her arms from around Leon's neck. "No, I'm going to face them. Just don't leave me alone with them, please."
While Karina was able to tolerate her parents and Marius, Leon found that he didn't even want to be in the same room as them. Samantha was running around the house, frantically trying to make sure everything was just right for when her parents arrived, much to Karina's amusement. Leon took the opportunity to sit outside with Elsa and Ember and work some more on his foundation, Karina eventually joined him with a winter salad for lunch.
"There you are!" Samantha practically stormed out on to the patio. "I've been trying to figure out seating arrangements for tonight. Where do the two of you want to sit?"
Leon glanced up and smiled. "I'm taking Karina to Salzburg for dinner this evening."
Samantha's strained smile fell. "What am I supposed to tell me parents? My father is a huge football fan, he's expecting to meet you tonight."
"You can tell them that your future in-laws are horrible people and I'm giving my wife a break from them." His face remained stoic while Karina was trying not to laugh.
Karina waited until Samantha had returned inside before moving closer to Leon and resting against him. "What time do we need to leave tonight?"
Leon leaned back against Karina as he glanced at his watch. "Like…an hour and a half."
"Shit." Karina sat bolt upright. "I need to start getting ready."
Tugging on her hand, Leon playfully tried to prevent Karina from standing. "You look great, Maus. No need to change anything."
"Sir," Karina moved back and straddled his lap, "I'm not walking in to a Michelin star restaurant wearing leggings and your old hoodie."
He pretended to frown. "I guess you have a point. Want me to give the girls their dinner?"
"Thank you, Baby." Karina kissed him again before walking back in the house.
After a few minutes, Leon walked in as well and started to set up the dog's food. Once they were finished, he herded the dogs upstairs so he could start getting ready. When he walked into their bedroom, Leon found Karina standing in front of the bathroom mirror applying her makeup. She had obviously showered because her hair was still damp but she was only wearing her bra and underwear.
Leon smirked at her through the mirror as he stepped into the shower.
"I'm kinda surprised at how much I'm looking forward to this." Karina raised her voice just enough so that she could be heard over the water.
"It's been a little while since we've gone out somewhere fancy." Leon let the water run over his face for a second. "I get it, with your ankle and all, but I'm looking forward to it too."
By the time Leon was finished in the shower, Karina was working on her hair. He always loved watching her get ready as she had a very strategic process to doing things, right now she was parting her hair into sections and applying some sort of cream.
"You using the hair dryer?" Leon gently nudged her with his hip.
Karina pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh. "I will be but go ahead, you'll be done with it before I would be."
Once he was finished with his hair, Leon went to his wardrobe and picked out a dark grey window pane pattern suit and a white shirt with the deep burgundy tie the that the team wore for their Champion's League travel.
Karina sat on the bed and smiled at him. "I love that suit."
"Yeah?" Leon offered a little smirk. "What are you wearing tonight?"
She thought for a moment before smiling again. "I want it to be a surprise."
"I think we can do that." He leaned forward and gave her a kiss. "How about I go pull the car around while you finish getting dressed and I'll meet you downstairs?"
"Perfect." Karina stood now. "Consider this your preview for when we get home."
Leon stopped in the kitchen to get a glass of water while he waited for Karina.
"You're looking very smart this evening." Karina's father had walked in from their room. "I'm starting to feel a bit under dressed."
Leon pretended to smile. "I wouldn't worry about it. Karina and I have reservations at Ikarus so we won't be here for dinner."
The smile on his face fell. "Is there a reason my daughter is now refusing to participate in an event that is important to her brother?"
"It was my idea." Leon shrugged. "I'm tired of the way you all treat her so I'm taking her out for a nice evening instead."
He scoffed. "The way we treat her?"
"Yes." He grabbed his suit jacket from the back of the chair. "It's beyond obvious that Marius is your favorite and you have no idea how much you have hurt her yet you still expect her to grovel at your feet."
Just then, their mother walked in, obviously having heard Leon. "If I recall correctly, she's been fine until she started seeing you. Now you've managed to fill her head with all these ideas that it's ok to walk away from her family, to ignore her brother-"
"Seriously?" Marius had been standing in front of the wine cabinet, trying to figure out what bottle to bring out, the he'd had enough of the conversation. "Can we just stop talking about Karina? She's always been a bitch and I'm glad she won't be here for dinner."
Leon glanced over at Samantha, who was sitting in the great room waiting for her parents to arrive with a sour expression on her face. He felt like he shouldn't have been surprised that the whole family had found a way to blame Karina for the two of them skipping dinner but it still irritated him. After shaking his head, Leon took his suit jacket from the back of the bar stool and went to get out one of Karina's dress coats.
"Oh my god, are you wearing McQueen?"
Leon heard Samantha's voice and assumed that she was speaking to Karina. He took a few steps towards the stairs to see Karina in a black mini dress with a layer of lace peaking out from the hem and the same lace covering the cut out of the back. Karina smiled a bit sheepishly as she nodded her head. Leon simply beamed back at her. "You look absolutely stunning."
"I might need your help tonight," Karina reached out for Leon's hand as she made her way down the last two steps. "It's been a while since I've worn heels this high."
He glanced down at her stilettos covered with multicolored glitter and smiled. "Anything for you, Maus."
Leon held Karina' coat out for her before opening the door. "Enjoy!" He called out behind him as he closed the door.
Karina sank down in the seat and exhaled as if she had just realized she was holding her breath. "I'm a little nervous about leaving everyone there but god, I needed to get away from them. Is it just me or is it worse than normal?"
"Definitely worse." Leon agreed with her. "They've always been critical of you but now it seems like they're not even bothering to hide that you'll never measure up to Marius in terms of their expectations."
He heard Karina sigh again and he immediately continued. "Which is bullshit, by the way. You're intelligent and becoming highly respected in your field. Not to mention your compassion and generosity. Did you know that Marius never once offered to donate towards our charity? I didn't ask him to but like, you were well on your way to becoming my ex wife and you still went out of your way-"
Leon stopped when he felt Karina kiss the back of his hand. Glancing over at her, he saw Karina give him one of her little half smiles. "Baby, between that suit and the dinner reservations, you're getting whatever kind of sex you want tonight so you don't need to lay it on so thick."
He scoffed and rolled his eyes. "I thought you would have figured it out by now, but I'm your biggest fan, Mausi."
"God, Leon." Karina pretended to be irritated. "You're going to make me cry and ruin my mascara."
He laughed as he gave her a little nudge with his elbow. "And I'd still remind you that you're beautiful."
Karina could only shake her head but she continued to hold on to his hand. After a few moments of silence, she gave it a little squeeze. "Thank you."
"For what?" Leon squeezed her hand back before he moved his hand back to the wheel.
Karina shrugged. "It's just…I know you love me and there aren't any conditions or strings attached to that."

Name: Onodera Nanami ( 小野寺 七美 )
Birthday: October 4th
Age: 18 y/o.
Height & Weight: 5'3", 132 pounds
Gender & Pronouns: Female, She/Her
Appearance: Her light brown hair is cut next to her waist. Always with a ponytail, she also puts her fringes tied up above her head. Both her irises were dark brown before an oni attack that blinded her right eye; giving, then, a milky look surrounded by scars. Nanami isn't so slim. She has a bit of strong muscles under her clothes as a result of hard training.
Affiliation & Rank: Demon Slaying Corps, Tsuchinoto.
personality
Positive Traits: calm, quiet, she’s quite a collected person. Nanami shows a gentle nature, being polite and trying to be helpful when needed. Still, she'd rather being called to help than to do it on her own, being on her own tranquil pace.
Negative Traits: she has no initiative. Tanjirou felt no scent coming from her, as Nanami has no presence. Extremely submissive, deeply obedient without questioning, seems that she has no self will. Is often called bodyless and souless, as if she's not alive. Onodera is content, she has no ambition. Since she came from a wealthy and protected family, she never had the urge to fight. Too naïve. Never had a goal or felt that she must help humanity by her own. Nanami is there to follow her family goals, to bring honor to the Onodera name. Nothing she does is to herself. People commonly call her someone who hasn't no personality at all. Being so selfless and being always trying to praise others has made her lost herself. She really doesn't know who she truly is.
Habits: weak smiles, keeping her head down.
Quirks: offers food and matcha when people come to her, carries self made onigiris when in a mission and always wears a cloak that resembles wings when jumping.
relationships
Family:
Onodera Tatsuo, alive ㅡ father, head from the Onodera family, a ambitious man. He’s the one to tell his children what to do and what to follow. Unfortunately, Suzumi never followed his orders. He often feels that he’s a natural leader, born to be a commander. His family branch is involved in warfare, weapons, and shinobi training. Since Nanami is his seventh and last child, he hadn’t no other future to her than to be a demon slayer and bring more honor to their name. They don’t talk much.
Onodera Erika, alive ㅡ mother, she really has no contact to Nanami since she was a child. An aristocratic woman, wears herself as an empress. A follower of an extremely old fashion, she painted her teeth black.
Onodera Suzumi, alive ㅡ strong willed Suzumi, the older sister and the first to be born. Surely has a deep love for her young siblings. Always with her chin up, optimistic and authoritarian. She follows the kunoichi branch of the Onodera family.
Onodera Natsuki, alive ㅡ Natsuki has no deep - or even good - feelings for Nanami or any of his siblings. He thinks he's the Sun itself, the true heir, the enlightened.
Onodera Sana, deceased ㅡ succumbed to a sickness at her 2s.
Onodera Minene, deceased ㅡ she wasn’t alive when Erika gave birth.
Onodera Kosuke, alive ㅡ left home early and tried his best to manage a business of medicinal herbs himself. Gentle and thoughtful. Even if Erika, Natsuki or even Tatsuo are hard on him, he holds no grudges.
Onodera Umeko, alive ㅡ ambitious and sly, married a wealthy man. She sees herself as the smartest of the Onodera children. Not really close to Nanami and thinks she's a bit of a burden, being "useless" and naïve, but has no deep anger directed to her.
Allies, people in particular she works well or gets along with:
Ubuyashiki family, Gyomei, Mitsuri, Kochou and Sanemi, the last one being her trainer. He’s quick tempered, but Nanami often deal with it using her calm personality. (and, of course, offering ohagi with matcha) It was Ubuyashiki Kagaya who told him to train her, Tatsuo offered his own daughter to be trained - since he already had a kunoichi daughter and didn’t wanted Nanami to be one as well - in exchange of sponsoring the slayers.
Enemies, people in particular she works poorly or doesn’t get along with:
She surely doesn’t get along with Inosuke, Zenitsu (both too loud!), Giyu and all onis, except for Nezuko. She nurtures no bad feelings for the first ones, though. There’s no reason to make them her enemies.
abilities & powers
Breathing Style: Breath of the Bird, a branch from Breath of the Wind. She developed this breath herself, due to training and studying, relying on quick movements and attacks combined with precision.
Main Weapon: a common katana, her nichirin blade is light blue.
Add-Ons: none.
Natural Abilities: Her touch sense is strong. Since her eye got blinded, its precision grew. Nanami can feel, by the air surrounding her, where the opponent is and which attack is coming at her.
swordsmanship
Tori no Kokyū, ichi no kata: suzume: A sequence of simple cuts, gather strength with breath to strike
Tori no Kokyū, ni no kata: ikaru: Consecutive and quick strikes in the same direction. Can cut a stronger oni neck by pressing numerous attacks in one point.
Tori no Kokyū, san no kata: fukurou: Strikes are made towards the opponent as if they were many cutting feathers.
Tori no Kokyū, shi no kata: washi: Wields her sword and create cuts in the direction of the opponent as claws of an eagle.
opinions
Favorite Food: Udon and onigiri.
Likes: Studying, learning, listening to shamisen, green tea, quiet places, beautiful gardens, birds, taking care of her birds (specially her crow), beautiful kimono patterns, Suzumi and Kosuke, wind chimes, training and getting stronger, collecting feathers, hair pins, her shinobi family branch.
Dislikes: Loud noises, cold weather, feeling lost and with no direction, being called useless and then feeling useless, feeling empty, being hurt (her touch sense makes the pain worse), her mother and father.
Thoughts on Demons: Since she met Nezuko, she then knew that not every demon is evil. Sanemi always puts himself as against them, but she can't help but keep herself quiet about it and agreeing with him when he’s around.
Thoughts on Nezuko & Tanjiro: Nanami grew affection towards Tanjirou. He's so young and yet has so many reasons to fight and be alive. She truly admires his strength. She’s careful towards Nezuko, but there's something inside her that believes she’s under control.
Thoughts on Tamayo & Yushiro: Has no opinion about them. She doesn’t know about both of them.

New machine learning algorithm finds a gene signature characteristic of tumors
New machine learning algorithm finds a gene signature characteristic of tumors
How do cancer cells differ from healthy cells? A new machine learning algorithm called “ikarus” knows the answer, reports a team led by MDC bioinformatician Altuna Akalin in the journal Genome Biology. The AI program has found a gene signature characteristic of tumors. When it comes to identifying patterns in mountains of data, human beings are no match for artificial intelligence (AI). In…

Hikitsu Cosplay (for 2017 MM Halloween) 相片擁有者 Yela Gatchalian-David 透過 Flickr: Guórén's costume/cosplay for the 2017 Manika Manila Halloween meet. Peg was a relatively obscure ghost character in the original Fushigi Yuugi, but nonetheless features prominently in the Genbu Kaiden backstory (as a living being, of course). Since I had only 1 month to slap a dolly costume together, it had to (1) be preferably Oriental because that's the only pattern I have any experience with (2) fit the color scheme of the cloth and wigs I already have (3) have something in connection to ghosts/spirits. Hardly anyone can recognize who Hikitsu was, but Guórén rocked the part just the same.
