Been largely absent today bc I've been Out but CHECK THIS OUT

I bought this thang

Here's it in my actual new apartment. I wanna put it together so bad!!!!! But it's nearly midnight and I don't have the tools to put it together anyways
Later... later, I shall.....
#speculation nation#i got a few other things. mostly stuff for storage and whatever#also got a new slim display case. which im sure i will also love. but im not as excited about that as i am this COFFEE TABLE!!!!#look at it!!!! it's so beautiful!!!!!#that dark wood!!!! the glass top!!!!! the drawers underneath!!! and theres a shelf on the other side from the drawers#it already goes so well with the dark trim of the apartment... im excited for it omfg#hfkshfks i decided to just go ahead and bring this and the display case to my new apartment directly#the coffee table came in two boxes. each about 50 lbs. and the display case box was also about 50 lbs.#i carried them all in by myself. and hooooooo. that sure was a workout.#like if it's a compact 50 pounds that's not so bad. but when it's an awkward 50 pounds like these...#especially with the big square box. that one SUCKED to carry in.#the display case is in a long rectangle box. which actually wasnt the worst bc it was pretty easy to grip#i just had to be careful to not hit things with the ends of it.#the 2nd coffee table box wasnt as bad as the first. but it was still pretty miserable.#banged the shit outta my poor knee. oh well#i didnt wanna just leave them in my car yknow? and i didnt wanna bring them into my current apartment#bc it wouldnt have had anywhere to go Anyways. best to just take them here & not have to move them again later#plus!!! more room for building them!!!! i dont rly have much in the way of floor space at my current apartment :p#bwah. i still need to head back home. take a quick shower. grab some dinner.#i did also manage to finish writing my chapter. while eating at IKEA lmao#so if im still feeling energized after i settle in. mayhaps... i will try to do those edits... hoohoohoo

3 Sentence prompts: Willexie + Thrift Shopping!
Just because they were kind of famous now, didn't mean Reggie wanted to give up on his favourite hobby. Listen, he'd gotten his most iconic outfit from the thrift store. Okay, it had been pretty much his only outfit for a while. But it had clearly worked, because Sunset Curve was topping the charts now and everyone thought he was really cool.
Another bonus to having one iconic outfit was he could just ditch the leather jacket and flannel for the day and be basically incognito. Not that a lot of old people at estate sales knew who he was, but he'd been recognised at a bunch of garage sales and it just felt wrong to try and haggle with someone who really just wanted his autograph.
"Tell me again why you dragged me out of bed at five in the morning to drive down to Pasadena to look at... old junk?" Alex whined, sipping on the giant coffee Reggie had gotten him along the way. He was dressed in one of Reggie's flannels, which honestly was kind of a little treat in and of itself. Reggie himself had stolen one of Bobby's shirts and Alex' denim jacket.
"Because it's fun?" Reggie asked. Alex did not look convinced. "Because we can get cool stuff for the house?" he tried again.
"We can get cool stuff for the house at literally every store we want now," Alex pointed out. Which was true, they had Money now. Of course their co-dependent asses still went and bought a house together like they always said they would. It was just... slightly closer to a mansion than the shitty apartments they'd been thinking of when they were seventeen and broke. "Luke and Bobby spent a couple of grand on a new sound system."
"It's not about the money," Reggie pouted. "It's about the thrill of the chase. It's about treasure hunting! It's about finding unique pieces nobody else has!"
Alex stared at him, unamused, obnoxiously slurping his coffee.
"Fine, you're here because you love me and because I need your big sexy muscles to help lift stuff into the truck if we find anything." He was hoping to find a cool coffee table, or a desk, and they could still use a nice dresser.
"Fine," Alex said, pressing a kiss to his cheek. "But if I find something cute, you're doing the haggling for me."
"Deal."
The morning went pretty well. They found some cool lamps, and a couple of nice hardcover science fiction books Reggie thought would look very mature and adult on their shelf. Reggie managed to haggle down on a really mature looking desk that would look great in their 'We're Real Adults Now' house, and Alex did use his sexy muscles to help get it onto the truck.
After a quick early lunch in town, they went to the next estate sale. They agreed to split up, since it was later in the day and they needed to be fast before all the good stuff was snapped up.
Except when Reggie rounded the corner, he saw Alex wasn't looking for a nice dresser or pretty trinkets. Alex was talking to a very hot, very cool guy in a crop top.
Reggie narrowed his eyes, going over. Alex beamed. "Hey babe!"
"Why are you flirting with the enemy?" Reggie hissed.
Alex groaned. "Not this again."
"Hey, Reggie," Willie beamed. "Great job on nabbing that desk at the Gilmore estate, I had my eye on that too. But you got here a little late. Do you want to see the heirloom patchwork blanket I scored? And I found this really cool dresser I'm going to paint..."
Reggie squinted at their rival, annoyed. He wanted a cool dresser. And the patchwork blanket folded over his arm looked really nice.
"I'm sure it will look really cool," he said, trying to keep the sulk out of his voice. He gave Alex another glare.
Alex just stared at him. "Maybe I was distracting Willie so you could be the first to notice those vintage comic books in the corner," he said, and Reggie gasped, running off and rifling through the box before Willie could get there.
"Aw man, low blow, Hotdog!" Willie complained.
"Yeah, I'm evil like that," Alex deadpanned, rolling his eyes at the two of them.
In the end, Reggie came away with some Spiderman and Hawkeye comics that were still missing from his collection, and a cute little side table they could paint a pretty pink for Alex. As they were finishing up and loading everything in the truck at the end of the day, Willie moseyed back over.
"Howdy," he said, tipping a cowboy hat Reggie had completely missed. He felt a stab of jealousy, not just for missing it but also because Willie looked unfairly hot like that. Then, Willie plopped the hat on Reggie's head. "We still on for dinner?"
"The burger place?" Reggie asked, leaning over to press a kiss to Willie's cheek.
Alex popped out of the truck. "Oh so now it's okay to flirt?" he asked, grumpy.
"Of course it is, Alex, it's four thirty," Reggie said, propping the cowboy hat on Alex' head. He did not look as sexy as Willie had, but he did look kind of cute. They should go on a horseback riding date, all three of them, sometime soon. He'd bring it up over dinner.
"Yeah, Hotdog, we're only mortal thrifting enemies between six and four," Willie agreed.
"You two are so weird," Alex complained, but he still climbed down to sit in the bed of the truck to receive kisses from both his boyfriends. And over dinner, he smiled indulgently as his two thrift-nerdy boyfriends compared notes and showed off pictures of the treasures they'd found.
#julie and the phantoms#reggiexalexxwillie#fanfic#I wrote a thing#AUs are awesome#willie is a reseller who also like fixes stuff up and refurbishes it#he probably has like a blog or something as well#reggie just really likes thrifting#alex is there to look pretty and keep Reggie from bringing home any taxidermy (so Bobby won't disown them)#and use his big sexy drummer muscles to help lift stuff#and to roll his eyes at both his boyfriends and their silly rivalry#lbr the sunset curve house is a mess between Luke refusing to give up his ancient couch#reggie's thrifting and Bobby's 'I'm going to buy designer furniture because I'm rich now fuck you'#meanwhile Alex just wants somewhere to sit that is comfortable and doesn't have bedbugs#poor guy probably went to like Ikea in self-defence

My wife and I take turns living the One Who Is Good With Tools stereotype.
Yesterday was my turn when I grabbed four clamps at the hardware store while she questioned when on earth were we going to need SO MANY clamps. (We ended up needing precisely four clamps for the repair we were buying the clamps for.)
Last Monday was her turn when she packed up both the cordless drill, making sure it was charged, and the Ikea toolbox, just in case, to pick up our free new desk table. (We ended up needing the screwdriver.)
#LGBTQ#stereotypes#TO THE HARDWARE STORE#the free desk needed repairing#it has a bit of cracked laminate in unimportant places#and had one piece of split chipboard#neither of us was taught any DIY at home#all I know from watching YouTube is that there is no such thing as too many clamps#especially if there's a weird swoopy bit#and she knows that people don't always disassemble stuff they want out of the house#or leave out tools for people who pick it up to do so#this lady did#but two screwdrivers are better than one#is it living up to stereotypes if you're both bi?#i thought our thing was indecision and a general lack of life skills#seriously#get the IKEA toolbox if you have no tools in the house#my dad threw it in the cart when we went shopping for my dorm#fourteen years later those fifteen euros are still some of the best money he's invested in my future#not always the best tool for the job#but A tool is better than NO tool at all

Ludwig 🚪 (typical clothes worn around the house iirc?)
I imagine his outfit wouldn't change much? There's not much time between him getting home and him like. conking out. So it's like. Oh well he took off his coat. . . What a fashion statement
THOUGH I think even on like break days (if he could even fathom of such a thing) he'd probably just wear the same thing. Anyway. Not like he's got anything else? It's fine. It's comfortable? It'll do?
AND HE ALWAYS WEARS THAT SCARF THING EVERYWHERE. No matter what. He always puts that on he loves that thing. That's His Thing. Okay
#ITS BEEN SO LONG SINCE IVE DRAWN LUDWIG I AM SO RUSTY.#maybe ill colour this one day I DO LIKE HOW IT CAME OUT but i werent feeling . colouring. so#also im surprised ludwig got asked.....................in general i mean? hi lud boy#ludwig mode#ikea art section#ikea customer service#pobopolybius#a part of this is the fact that i Couldnt. Really.Find . stuff on what he WOULD wear. it was all lioke. high-class home wear#which SUCKED!!!!!! unless i say oh well he got a robe from christos :-) or something which i mean i could do. i guess

for some reason while slightly-delirious-levels-of-tired last night i found myself just. obsessing over how we never ornament shit any more.
like, okay. the thing that sparked this was my partner's flatmate's laptop stand. it is a very basic laptop stand - it's a metal X-frame, and it has little grips on the top ends of the front, so each end is kinda like
(shh i'm still very tired i don't feel like getting my tablet out)
and I was just sitting there like... man. when else in HISTORY, when else in THE ENTIRE ARTISTIC HISTORY OF THE WORLD, would we consistently be overcoming the urge to turn that weird little grip into a carved hand? a bird with open wings? a talon, perchance?
and then looking around the flat like... this is not a nasty flat, it's not badly-decorated or anything, and the same is true of my house, but where are the ornamentations?
By ornamentations, I don't mean "things that look nice", and frankly I actually love a lot of unornamented furniture that's just a Nice Shape or just really well-made. but at some point we also lost the art of - not adding things, exactly, but integrating little decorative flourishes into the things we make and own. carving floral designs into the front of your bookshelves. embroidering your work shirts. painting little designs on your doorframes and your window shutters. carving monstrances and vines and silly little guys into the archways of your grand architecture. putting a cheeky little hand carving on the laptop stand you use for work.
tbh I think there's some answers to be found in this in my boy William Morris' writing from nearly 200 years ago, because so much of the Arts & Crafts movement was based on recognising this loss. How, as industrialisation and mass production reshape design, we move away from artisans proving their chops with little tricks of the trade, because they now have to Add Value in a way that justifies spending ten times more on something that does the same thing. How, with cottage industries hamstrung and the working classes no longer having the long winter nights to whittle spoons and weave cloth, individuals no longer tend to make the things they use. How patents and copyright trickle down to a culture where originality is found only in structural difference, in the shape and the silhouette and the things that can be noticed on first glance.
and the weird thing is, I like unornamented goods. I am a dyed-in-the-wool English Quaker and highly ornamented styles are not at all my natural habitat. the baroque gives me a fucking headache. the first thing I did when I moved into this house was be like "i am getting these overwhelming patterns and squiggly things OUT."
BUT
i also remember as a kid being absolutely enamoured of Robert "Mouseman" Thompson's carpentry. he was a local(-ish, North Yorkshire) carpenter who made furniture and also did a bunch of lecterns and rood screens for churches, stuff like that. And every piece he did, he had a signature that he added:
he was very Arts & Crafts inspired, and you can tell. his furniture on the whole was pretty simple, clean lines and carved channels. but from the 1920s until he died in 1955 he always put a mouse on his work somewhere.
but this is the ornamentation I think I miss in my life. these cheeky little touches. the mouse climbing up the altar rail. the lion feet on chairs and tables. the flowers carved out of a bookcase. braid trimming on upholstery. painted vines climbing a windowframe. stonemasons making shapes in a lintel:
not huge and dramatic and overwhelming. just... artisans, having fun. making things look special, because it's neat and because it's a way to show off and because they can.
idk. I have no conclusion. I just have an image of that laptop stand in lacquered wood with little hands and feet, like a million bookstands and folding stools and the like which were made pre-industrially, and I think I just want to live in a world where that would be. not a statement? not a one-off item?
where everything wasn't so utilitarian and so plain.
i guess what i'm saying is: i wish as a culture we made more stupid little creative choices to make the world we live in fun?
#and like TO BE CLEAR i am not saying those things don't EXIST#i'm saying they're not the NORM even for people who spend a lot on furnishings#like. i understand why flatpack ikea furniture is probably going to be plain and boring#i do not understand why this is also true of high-end handmade pieces. except that this is now what we expect.#and the other thing the arts and crafts movement was big on is that this is not (just) about the expensive artisanal stuff#it's also like. whittling and carving things you own. painting designs on your own stuff. you know. peasant shit.#it's folk art! it's making the things you own YOURS! which... i think is where there's a serious political element#in a society that constantly reiterates that nothing you own is truly yours#anyway idk. make things beautiful i guess. play. paint your lintel. draw on your walls. stencil your desk. add fun handles to your drawers.#i don't have a thesis statement i'm just picking through some Thoughts#the older i get the more the arts and crafts movement Matters to me tbh#THEY WERE RIGHT FELLAS. THEY WERE SO RIGHT ABOUT SO MUCH OF THIS INDUSTRIAL BULLSHIT.#(also. to be clear: i don't think the death of ornamentation is global. i'm coming at this solely from a uk perspective.)#(i think there are a lot of cultures which DO still ornament their homes and their lives fully. minimalism is endemic not pandemic.)#(which also makes me think we could bring it back for a post-industrial age. idk how though.)

What I just stayed up an extra hour doing bc otherwise I would've lain awake thinking about doing it... swapped the TBR books with the children's books. And DVD collection is on the bottom shelf of the crawlspace door, which I don't need to see unlike the books ^^'
So now I can see all of the kids books unhindered (the bottom shelf of the door was blocked) when i want to, by looking at the smaller bookcase, but also they're no longer the first thing I see when I look across the room, instead I see mostly novels, which makes the space feel more like a 30yr Old's space to me when I'm laying on bed looking at my room.
#idk the combo of childlike shades of purple with no feature wall to break up the color or nothing bolder/darker plus the low ikea pieces#plus the clutter plus the tchotchkes plus the childrens books meant i felt like this is 15 yr old me's room still. which it is but it isnt#bc I'm 30 almost 31. and wbile i need and want those kids books and want to be able to see them#and each of the parts of tbe whole are fine on their lwn#i needed to change something and i didnt need to see kids books first thing when i look across the room.#my TBR does include some kids-chapter books but still different imo#still need to find homes for the tchotchkes and stuff i dishomed in the process but thats fkr another time#time to sleeeeeep now#I'm more awake now tho xD#but feeling accomplished and satisfied#which is v helpful#still aways to go

MALM Set

The MALM set is completed, yay! I also redid the LACK set and now out of 71 items I have 19 left, so I'm getting closer to completing this project! :D There's a chance the pack would end up having more than 71 items because I'm considering completing missing pieces from the other sets and maybe converting the bonus items but I'm still unsure about it.
