OKAY so . So!!

If YOU are having a struggle finding the motivation to write your fanfic, call a hiatus. Not because taking the break is good, but because after announcing the hiatus, and telling everyone you're taking a break from writing, you could possibly get the BIGGEST burst of motivation/inspiration to write in existence.

(I'm mostly joking about that. Breaks probably are good but JESUS I'm tweaking out over here and it's the funniest thing ever to me.)

I've got. I've got a two week hiatus. Because it's good for me to not grind away at a story yadda yadda yadda I was stressed writing it stuff stuff yeah. I was totally on board with the hiatus 2 days ago! But now.

But now?? That I'm supposed to be ignoring the story and on break?

It's all I can think about. I have cooked up THREE separate plot points to follow including the next one which I was struggling with and I am cackling and cringing at the. The irony?? Would that even be what it is?

It's hilarious but I also need to take a break because it has been mooonnnnths of this story, and while I adore it, it simultaneously drives me insane.

omg hiiiiii!! someone sent this to me on discord too without your comment and i came up with my own matches last night so you get to see those for funsies hehe. i will admit that i have seen secret of the ooze Once and remember almost none of it (i was watching with a friend and we were solely making fun of it. for obvious reasons). i think rise!Donnie fits zed more because zed can really have fun with the mad scientist bit and has, like Donnie, performed unethical experiments on his friends/hermitcraft family (and also himself)

listen i love tmnt SO. i have made an official list. a few notes: rottmnt (2018) notably changes the characters of the turtles. it does so well and i love it for that! but it changes who ZITS would be. the first emoji refers to the original cartoon, 2003, and 2012; the second refers to rise. i'm not counting the batman crossover bc i don't like it, IDW comics bc they are also unique characters and i dont wamna, 2007 because theyre unique characters, mutant mayhem bc i'm less familiar with their personalities, or bayverse or live action bc i havent seen them and dislike them on principle. 03 and rise are my special favourites, which probably affects things. without further ado:

okokok my reasonings!!

first of all i'll give a lil explanation of the turtles' personalities, divided into "87, 2k3, '12" and "rise".

'87, '03, '12

Leo: the leader in blue; responsible; that's pretty much it tbh. he's not a bad character, but he can be rather boring

Don: the tech guy; smart; has some self-esteem issues but is generally pretty level-headed and good in a pinch

Raphael: anger issues mcgee (and i love him for it); angry but also the most complex character imo because they always give him an interesting way to deal with his anger issues; despite it all he's a softie at heart

Mikey: the funny youngest sibling; irresponsible; loves pop culture; underestimated because he's effortlessly good at stuff, and people assume if he's listening to a tape he's lazy or something

Rise

Nardo: snarky twin with 500 mental illnesses; arrogant, horrible self-esteem

Donnie: smart twin; evil supergenius; frequently revolutionizes tech for fun, has his own trademark, commits morally dubious experiments (often on his own family)

Raph: Anxiety (also the leader. but mostly anxiety)

Angelo: fluffball who *could* kill you but would rather tie you to a chair and lecture you on talking about your feelings

Why I'm Right (aka why ZITS are what they are)

First off, for the first three shows, Leo is the leader who's pretty levelheaded. Everyone's right with that one. Raphael could be either Skizz or Tango, but Don is too chill to be anyone but Tango. Raphael as Skizz makes sense when you watch, for example, Pico Park pt. 2. He gets a little intense. But Raphael is also a softie at heart, like Skizz. Zed has to be Mikey, which works because he's often underestimated and tends to enjoy the sillier side of life.

Then, in Rise, we see the shift in leadership from Leo to Raph (until the very end, but we don't see much of it so I'm basing this off the majority of the show). This works for Impulse, because he, too, is just a bit ball of anxiety constantly. Zed is clearly a mad scientist like Donatello. But, you may be saying, what about Tango? Isn't he a mad scientist too? Sure, sure, but listen to me: the self esteem issues. What is Tango if not a tower of self esteem issues in a trench coat? So he's clearly Nardo. And that leaves Skizz as Angelo, which 100% works because of Dr. Feelings (angelo's alter ego who evilly forces people to talk about their feelings).

ANYWAYS i love tmnt and deciding on a lil crossover was so fun, and im glad to see someone else who knows their tmnt weighing in as well!!!

I believe that Sebek WILL know where it's coming from. I'm sure he has some knowledge in sex ed or smth and if he doesn't, he's still very smart. He can make the connection and what was causing it easily. And when he looks up at you in concealed confusion, he can tell by your nonchalant expression that you aren't doing it on purpose. He assumes it's a natural thing that you shouldn't be ashamed of. So, by that logic, if you feel something hardening under your ass, surely you can understand that it's just natural, right? It's nothing to freak out over, I mean, who wouldn't get hard when there's such a darling sitting in his lap?

And who could possibly have known that something as simple as a pulse could be so alluring?

I mean, if we're talking sweet ol classic Sebek, he'd probably be aaaaabsolutely mortified. His immediate reaction would be to politely tap you on the shoulder and ask you (in the quietest voice he's ever had in his life) to stand so he can use the restroom. And he's lying. Of course you'll be getting properly disciplined when this is all over. A hands-on lecture is a must. Best not to worry about that now, though. Just enjoy the moment. He sure is.

i've been looking for some sotr criticism after reading the book and thank god i found you! i totally do think that this was a cash grab even more than ballad. like .. the way lionsg*te already had the idea of a movie even before the book came out? when i read ballad for the first time i thought that it kind of worked on his own. not that i was that interested in snow's history, but it was interesting to see the perspective of capitol's citizens, how war impacted them etc. and lucy gray was a character i enjoyed, it made sense with the trilogy canon because our eyes were katniss' and she never has a clue (about almost nothing). but with sotr? everything that was already clear in the og trilogy - the rebellion being always there with 13 plotting since the dark days etc - .. all gone to hell. everything felt forced, as if collins tried hard to 1 play with all the things we couldn't know because again, our pov was katniss pov and 2 make us cry. do i really have to buy this romance story about how haymitch was this kind of lover boy back in his teenage years? how his life is miserable now and he's an alcoholic because he lost his family and the "love of his life" when he was 16 when katniss makes a point telling us that probably he's like that for the simple reason that is hard enough to mentor 2 kids every year that are, inevitably, going to die? and oh! let's not forget that his birthday also falls on reaping day. it's like collins tried so hard to give haymitch every excuse to be the man we have known for 3 books without it feeling earned - and i can say the same for lenore. i felt almost nothing for her? their love story felt flat and almost annoying at times; collins keeps on telling us how much sorry we should feel and how we should think about the dynamics between the characters (haymitch calling mayselee "sis" is another example and also him being best pals with katniss' dad) as if we can't read or feel or think on our own (the irony in all of this!). there's no room for thought, for reflection, for mystery. truly, this book adds nothing new because everything she shows us we've already felt and known for years. yeah capitol's brutal, the propaganda is there (lmao wasn't katniss aware at one point in cf that she had to pretend her whole life, that she was basically handcuffed to peeta in order to protect her own family and, also, that she couldn't protect the children that she was supposed to bore not for her own happiness or out of love but for panem's sake, as snow kept on reminding her?), no one really wins the hunger games etc. what collins was trying to do, what she was trying to say, really? because i'll never buy into the "she writes only when she has something to say" when clearly this two books were written for the movies (lol i can see another one coming because maude? i know she's cooking something already about her, about another covey girl that she'll try to paint as a rebel or something like that). what about cinna! it's almost like the fandom totally forgot about him and his reasons/plans around the rebellion. we used to speculate so much back in the day because why a capitol citizen would risk his life for the districts? what was going on in his life, his family, and what kind of life he had that he felt so much attached to katniss from the beginning?

lol it all felt like a what if fanfic, i can't wrap my head around the thought that this is a printed book. a CANON book. perharps im a hater, but for me this is what the cursed child is to the hp fandom 😓

yeah anon i had a similar experience reading it, i was like tbh i should've just printed out some of the good haymitch's games fanfics and read them bc that was legit how i felt reading it

i don't have much to add bc you said it all but i will say i agree about lenore dove. in general (and i've written about this many times before!) i find it hard to get invested in a romance that begins off screen. like, i don't see much intrigue in the author just being like "these two characters LOVE each other and have a ton of chemistry, TRUST ME" because it's like well, why should i care? without seeing it or having it be developed on the page it just feels kind of meaningless, it feels more like a plot point than an actual intriguing romance or actual compatibility between the characters. what does lenore dove like about haymitch? what does he actually like about her? it's hard for me to tell since they barely interact outside of like, a couple makeouts and a random phone call where they just repeat that they love each other

and yeah this book was clearly not written because she had something to say, it was clearly written because the tbosas movie made a huge profit and someone (sc herself or lionsgate or whoever) was like waiitttttt there's more money to be made here. and it's just like UGH. you know where there's also money to be made? A NEW STORY. ONE THAT IS GOOD. ONE THAT IS ORIGINAL. ONE THAT EXPLORES THESE TOPICS IN A NUANCED AND SUBTLE BUT STILL INFORMED AND THOUGHTFUL WAY. COME ON. like i love thg but let's let it die!!! it's ok!! we can do new things now!! the fans are here and we'll be writing insane fanfiction forever. give us a new story now. we'll probably write insane fanfiction about that one too.

Blue period 11

I didn't think I'd be reviewing manga, and I probably won't, but this one I have to do.

(If the art doesn't have credits underneath, its by the author; Tsubasa Yamaguchi)

In case you don't know, Blue period (1) is a manga by Tsubasa Yamaguchi about Yatora Yaguchi, a highschool student, who gets inspired and finds passion for art. He wants to get into one of the best art schools in Japan, since it's one of the few school (if not the only one) that's not private.

In volume 11 tho, We're at a part where Yaguchi is in uni but needs money, so he gets a job at a community art class with kids.

(I rate comics/graphic novels/manga a bit differently. Enjoyability > actual quality. Shitty way to rate ik but who cares🤷‍♀️)

Spoilers ahead!!!

What makes this volume so special? Well it's not in a school setting. The whole art uni thing is very stressful to both the reader and the characters. Since it's spring(?) break, Yaguchi doesn't have to do any art. But this is still a manga about art. But this one focuses more on one's relationship with their art and others' art. And any artist has experience with that. Alot of people hate their art, and honestly I do too.

Since I like parting things, the book has 2 parts, each is focused on one kid in the art class.

Shoya

Shoya is bored in the class. He has trouble finishing his assignments, he's mean towards his classmates (and Yaguchi) and violent. Yaguchi tries his best to make Shoya interested but it just doesn't work. One day Shoya's mother comes to pick Shoya up from the class, when she sees Shoya's painting, she says:

,,What's so great about this painting? It doesn't look like he did that good of a job to me..."

Which is, you know, Something to say to a 5 year old. Shoya is understandibly not happy about that. But one day, Yaguchi finds him playing some games while walking home. And Yaguchi finds out Shoya is really good at drawing mechs. He talks to the teacher, and Shoya can draw whatever he wants to in class! Yayyy. He also makes this football game for their exhibition. Shoya's thing is that he doesn't enjoy art because he knows what he likes. No one enjoys drawing everything.

Sae

Sae has alot of passion for art. But she has alot of other classes. Even though Sae has barely any time to play with her friends, she still paints at home. And I mean this girl loooves painting. Well until her dad points at another painting (which as far as i know, wasn't even made by a child) and says:

,,Oh, that kid's painting is really good! How about trying to do something like that?"

We're back to this point, where the kids' confidence and how they think about themselves and their art is very much connected to how other people see it.

She starts comparing herself to the other kids. Hashida (who also works there now lol) also notices her painting has changed. When he says he likes her painting, she says:

,,Thank you, Hashida-sensei! But it's not good at all. Im worse than Shikahara-san. Ahhh. Why am I so bad...? I want to get better. I've been practicing so much, too..."

AND I HAVE NEVER RELATED TO A 5 YEAR OLD MORE. Like this young girl is already at this part of making art. Me and my art teacher actually talked about this, and she said this change from having fun with art to being critical of it happens around/after the age of 10.

The kids will have an exhibition! And one day in class, they present their art to the class. When they're presenting, Shoya compliments her painting. And I'll just write down the whole presentation.

,,My painting... is bad because the subjects are small. The colours are dull, too. And the bear looks messed up. It's creepy, crappy and just awful. Why is it... that I can only make something like this? Shoya-kun went out of his way to say something nice about my work... but... he can do that because he's better than me. How nice! How nice that everyone's great at art. [...] I dont wanna do this anymore! [...] My colours are messier than Miku-chan's! I can't draw mechs like Shoya-kun! I can't make cute paintings like Yuichi-kun! I cant paint like Shikahara-san! How nice that everyone's great at art!"

And after that I took a 20sec break ;P!

As far as i know, there are 2 ways people can react to making art around others. You either envy their work and take it as a learning experience to appreciate their art. But I, someone who's about to do entrance exams into art school, cant afford to do that. Or you can just fall apart under the pressure of "everyone is better than me". And it's easy to do that when you have a goal and everyone could be your enemy. You cant appreciate their art and love art together. Because they're better than you and you have to get better. Art isn't about how much you study. Art is about how passionate you are. How much you want to make art. If you hate everything you make, is there a reason to keep doing art? For some yes. For some no.

Sae quit the art class.

Before she does, Hashida asks her to do a collab. They just paint random things. React to the other's painting. Hashida says this (I'm sorry for so many quotes but they really stuck with me srryyy):

,,I'm actually bad at making art. I love art. I love people who make art and i make art myself, but the more I get to know other people who make art... the more is makes me think I can't go as far as them. I respect people who can keep their brush moving with tears in their eyes. I think you're truly amazing for jumping into painting like you did. Even when you feel miserable or think you have no reason to praise your own work."

Which again. SAME. Back to parents, when Sae shows the painting to her dad, he tears it in the half to give half to Hashida. They stick it back together. But you know...

SOMEWHERE IN THE BOOK HASHIDA ASKS YAGUCHI TO GO TO SWITZERLAND, ITALY AND GERMANY WITH HIM AND I HOPE HE ACCEPTS CUZ I LOVE HASHIDA AND HES SO INTERESTING. PLEASEEEEEEE.

If I read this volume without the other 10, I'd probably think it was just kids and being whinny about art. But when you read through so much of the stuff these people go through just to make art. And how they struggle. When out of nowhere, its like 'I fucking hate this'. This book just keeps you think 'Why? Why? Why? Why do they do that? Why dont they just quit?'. And your relationship with your art and art overall is important. It's not like you can look past the fact that you fucking hate what you just did and hate that you're only capable of such a bad thing. Art you create is often hard to love, especially when its competitive.

But art is still art. And it's such a pity that people who would love art and creating it crumble under the pressure of others.

Be gentle and loving to yourself and your art.

YESSS I DOOOOOOOO and i love answering them!!!!! Again im not a professional whatsoever im just speaking from experience and what I've learned so far!

Hmmm tbh i think i over describe stuff wayyyy tooo much 🤣🤣 but i guess that comes from just observing a lot of things bc im not a talkative person so i tend to look at every little detail of where im at and that kind of translates to how I describe stuff (and honestly i hold back 😂) what i usually do is that i place myself in the scene im writing so I want the readers to feel the same way too like they're right in that scene too. So I tend to describe the weather (which is my fav) how they're feeling, what the characters are doing are they standing up, are they sitting adjacent to the mc? Like those tiny details really make the scene feel more alive. Add the place where they're at too, if the place is something as common as a library, a bank or a simple street then i tend to describe the tinier stuff around it bc ppl already know what that place tends to look like. Same goes for food, sometimes smaller description is better especially if the reader probably already knows what it smells/taste like. If not then you can describe it as best as you can. Also over describing things aren't always the best for example if your scene is fast paced and u want the reader to feel that it is then simple is definitely better. And don't underestimate paragraph breaks! It helps to distinguish the action much better and it makes the scene feel slower or even give tension if done well. Could also be used to make things feel quicker too

As for dialogue the same goes to the first part bc i tend to listen around me at what ppl say and how ppl tend to speak to each other. But of course realistic isn't always the best bc that tends to be boring sometimes. So I guess what i usually do is think of what I'll reply in that situation and then think of something more clever like how you do when you're in an argument but hours later while in the shower you think of a better comeback at them. Also be insane/jk 🤣 and talk to yourself lol Sometimes embodying both characters in a scene helps in creating better dialogues! Also reading good books and good cinema/ shows that has all the fixings you want to learn is a great way to see how the professionals do it!

hi! i know it must be kinga boring for you recive questions about castiel bc ppl are obsessed ober him for years but like the other person who asked you a few days ago, i follow you (and ply mcl) for like 10 years and ever since day one my fav boy has been tiel. till this day at the age of 22 he's my favorite and my comfort boy so i joke that he's not a fictional character anymore for me and that i know him personally at this point lol

and the last one: another thing that gives me so much comfort is the lystiel friendship. not having present parents, being so closed off i know that lysander is such an important presence on tiel's life because he was basically the only close person he had (specially after the debrah fiasco); if lys didnt had taken the farm and went to college and bla bla bla do you think he would still be part of the band with castiel? im not sure if im mixing the canon with a fanfic i read a while ago (lol) but the band was more of a fun thing to lys, right? he liked writing most (i always imagined him getting into a literature degree or something like this). i also like to think that he helps tiel with lyrics at times, even if he's out of the band (in my head the canon is that they are best friends and pretty close till this day, i pretend lys never left our lives just like armin)

Castiel being a swiftie. No sorry, I don't think he would be. If candy likes her, I'm pretty sure he would try to listen. Also he is an open minded person for sure, so I'm sure he would be curious to listen and study what all the hype is about, it could also help as some sort of far away inspiration, but I don't see him being a fan.

What kind of songs Crowstorm sings This is hard to answer because my musical knowledge is pretty limited and I'm sure I would miss on lot of potential groups or singers that would fit well. Castiel and Lys friendship. It was'nt mentionned much in UL/LL because I didnt wish to bring too much drama by mentioning Lys when he was not there for the players, but of course Lys and Cast always kept in touch. It is very clearly mentionned in Lys' AL that they keep in touch, that Lys helps Castiel write songs and Cast also like to come to his farm to have a break and spend time together. You should play it if you havent, you'll have a good chunk of Cast and Lys friendship :) However yeah I can confirm that Lys would not like to do it serisouly and professionally, but he'll be all the way around to support and help Cast.

It always starts when you turn fifteen.

It doesn't happen to everyone. You're lucky. You're chosen. All you have to do now is convince your family you're not completely fucking insane. However, this was not a problem for Aeryth, apparently. She had elf blood running through her veins, apparently. Nan had already sent all four of her children, including Aeryth's mother, to magic school. Apparently.

That's it. That's what Lav had been missing the whole time. It made perfect sense. If only it didn't make him sound like someone who needed to be institutionalized. His father had never understood. Lav had tried, and it wasn't that he didn't have any valid arguments. His dad was just closed-minded and thought sheep were more important than making cool shit. He was gonna need help with this one.

Gildamore has a long and convoluted origin story, but I'll spare you the details for now. It's become what will probably be a webnovel about two characters getting shipped off to magic school and becoming besties very early on. Unfortunately they also both begin crushing on each other at the same time. They are terrible at hiding it, but Lav has no ability at all to pick up on social cues, and Aeryth doesn't know how this shit works so she thinks he thinks of her as a really close friend (which tbf is true.) This one's probably gonna be more slice of life, and it was always gonna end up being at least 75% fluff. Gildamore is entirely my excuse to write cute romance with a side of emotional devastation and some vague big threat and they save the world cause they're cool like that™

Life is good for Beatrix. Sure, they won't let her learn magic even though she's of age because she's "not ready." But, as the king's niece, she's entitled to a lot of perks.

But all that changes when her chambers are broken into one night by two masked strangers, and she is torn away from the life she's always known. The two strangers—Kyren and Silas—take her out into the wider world, where she learns that maybe life isn't all it's cracked up to be in the confines of noble society. And when a lifelong street urchin named Madge joins their group in search of a way out, Beatrix comes face to face with the cosmic gap between Madge's life and her own. It unsettles her.

So their little rebellion has four members now.

That's the premise for the first volume anyway. Each of the five main characters (I really like doing a main 5 don't I) gets one (yes I know there's only 4 in the synopsis. Elodia comes in later.) Yet another huge long-term project. But that's what happens when you want to overthrow an entire regime of old men too rich for their own and anyone else's good.

I don't update this fic often (my sincerest apologies to the three whole people who have bookmarked it) but it's always running in the background. It's just not the main thing I think about. I promise I do intend to finish it at some point. You're just gonna have to wait 3-5 business months between chapters.

this is a really interesting question [to me at least] because there isn’t really a “correct” answer. There's too many factors at play within Iris and she doesn't really have time to form an identity. I think ppl are free to interpret my version of the character however they like!

I use she and they when talking about Iris because 2 of the 4 components that comprise her feel very strongly about being referred to as such and it feels weird [to me] to do otherwise.

My IRL friends joke that she is, but in-universe, the turtle is unlabelled and does not actively seek out any kind of companionship. Although, that may be mostly due to her being a machine and not wanting to have to outlive somebody. If she were to one day have a partner in defending the universe, they’d probably need to have a lot in common with her and be pretty much immortal.

so I have actually been asked this (privately) before, which is funny because while i have been intentionally kinda vague about them, I’ve also only ever referred to them as allies or friends. But then again, they live on a spaceship together so I understand why there's a question.

I mean, I could go on a whole long tangent about how they’re both aliens with alien ideas about relationships and gender, or how Viras‘ history and being a composite complicates everything and makes it hard to define exactly what’s going on. But to be honest, that’s mostly just me trying to skirt around the question and over-complicating things when the answer is yes. Well….sorta. They’ve got a long history, are certainly deeply codependent and are very invested in keeping the other alive. I have a lot written for them in terms of the background for how they ended up so close and I try to lightly sprinkle it into my posts, but again I know that’s not really what most people are interested in and I don’t want to bore them. Depending on how this post goes over, I might make their dynamic a bit more overt in some of my comics…. They are the most fun to draw interacting and I find there to be something oddly wholesome about them.

Shipping is a weird thing for me i thinks. Im not the biggest shipper out there by a mile. used to be a constructiprowl head after finishing all of idw 1 but I fell off it hard after a bit. I just got really attached to the constructicons the more I looked at canon media featuring them + it's hard to think of much for constructiprowl if im being honest.. a lot of fan stuff featuring it is one note "heres these guys doting on prowl!" And thats about as much as you get. And if you want to take their personalities from g1 onto them it just..stops making any sense at least 2 me. I don't think they actually click well with him.

if she's a Ravenclaw I would just make her smart and kind of like a Herman jr, and if she's a particularly good finder Hufflepuff she would be more like a Ron jr but with a lot of find jokes, and if she's a Gryffindor she'll probably still be a Herman jr or something (i will give her more character but like that's the base of what I'm thinking)

basically, i joined the life is strange fandom in 2018 so i never got to experience the pre-bts era, meaning i didn’t get to experience what rachel was like to the fandom back then or see the different interpretations of her.

i did some digging and i found some fan content of her from 2015-2016 & i’m absolutely infatuated with all aspects of the fanon version of her, especially her personality & how she looked. i totally wanna embody her. also the love is strange vn was so interesting to play, i love how she was written. i’d love to know more!

i stumbled across ur blog while i was doing my digging and i saw an old long post of urs saying how bts didn’t live up to the fandoms expectations, as almost everyone perceived her differently.

sorry for all the yapping LOL but what i basically wanna ask is,,, how *exactly* did the fandom perceive rachel back then (2015-2016). what were some popular headcanons for her? things you guys even considered to be canon? what were some of your own *personal* headcanons? (can be silly, realistic,,, just anything you thought resonated with her)

do you have any favorite arts from that time period that you thought really captured her? what were your hopes for the prequel/rachels character before it was released? what did you want to see in terms of story? was rachel’s style, appearance, & personality extremely different than what you expected? what did you expect?

i assume that rachels treatment in the fandom was different then than what it is now. whether it’s better or worse, i’m not sure. i was hoping u could answer that too😞. recently i’ve just been seeing constant hatred or lack of care for her character so i’m starting to think that if bts was written differently and based on the fandom’s interpretations instead, the hate now wouldn’t be this bad.

from my digging it seems like you guys had alot of fun sculpting rachel’s character on your own, and the interpretations were probably more realistic than what decknine put together.

hiii u def did not bother me, i am not in a position to answer all of these questions, but although it makes me feel ancient, it's cute to see so much passion for rachel and pre-BTS fandom opinion, so i'll try answer some and for the rest (art, hcs, etc.) im just gonna have to direct you to my archive* (will continue under the readmore)

*(tumblr archive is so broken on mobile so you gotta go on pc for this, but also there's so many gifs from that time so it will Definitely slow down your browser). i was insane and 17 years old so like, just excuse all of the cringe content i guess. you can click tag and filter it by either #lis #rachel amber #amberprice or whatever to try and find stuff like art. and i got into lis sept 2015 so that's like, as far back as it will go, but i was fully lisbrained from 2016 through 2018)

to be honest, in alignment with pre-bts thought lmao, rachel is whoever you want her to be. there was less of 'this is a correct objective fact about her personality/history' and more 'yeah, this is an idea the fandom really likes and has become fanon, most likely because it is a nuanced and entertaining and realistic interpretation of what we have seen of her character in lis1' which means people whose opinions conflicted with that might've be contested/laughed at/unpopular, but they weren't wrong per se. there were plenty of people i'd criticise (and ridicule) back then for implying that this teenage girl was evil, and being a teenager myself back then, i'd call them morally reprehensible and cancellable and whatever, but tbh, as an adult now, i can just see that it was simply a boring interpretation of her character informed by misogyny

i'd disagree with the notion that fandom treatment of rachel's character was better before bts, back then there were plenty of people seemingly excited to characterise her as emotionally manipulative, a cheater, deserved what she got, etc. as well, bc tbh, the story did leave room for that interpretation, but it left room for so much more as well. i feel like bts just really locked in on a certain story they wanted to tell plot-wise, and didn't choose to explore a lot of the questions fans had about rachel as a person. it's hard to turn the ambiguity of a friendship turned situationship over a period of 4 years into a playable experience for an audience - so they didn't. regardless, it got people thinking about rachel more, putting a spotlight on her, hence increased attention both positive and negative. i feel like there's just a fundamental difference between what lis1 fans enjoyed about the potential for her character and how she related with chloe and the world around her, and what deck9 wanted to portray in bts (yes they hit the astrological headcanons, the charmingness, her rebellion, the emotional conflicts... but it personally felt hollow, contrived sometimes, i suppose). but there were a lot of people who loved bts (i enjoyed a lot of parts of it!). just, in my opinion, some of those were quite different people from who loved lis1, and with that wave it brought a lot of emotional immaturity to the fandom (like... ship wars, really? that was an insane change to fandom dynamics for me lmao, but maybe i was just spoiled by surrounding myself with people whose takes i respected)

anyway i highly recommend also that if you're hungry for that kind of content, read fanfiction on AO3 by the old fans - by Mogatrat (TON of rachel centric ones there), explosionshark and tippytypewriter, chicknparm (though Cusp is written post-bts, it's informed by pre-bts characterisations), vicepoint (me hehe), def many more good ones out there those r jus my friends so they come to mind first, e.g. i liked homecoming by kriegersan back in the day, but you could def find some more by sorting the lis ao3 page by kudos and reading the older ones that are highly rated featuring rachel. and lastly, my gf wrote a beautifully worded blog post called "The Assassination of Rachel Amber by the Cowards Dontnod and Deck Nine" which gets into some of this from a media crit perspective (not about fandom) in a very eloquent way thru comparison w twin peaks and i highly recommend that

rachel hcs that def started way before bts: skater rachel, stoner rachel, punk music listener rachel (but also like, fleetwood mac cranberries cocteau twins grungy hippy stuff rachel too), rachel's parents being distant and still living in california, curvy thick rachel, things that i've accepted as canon but were def created by diff people: bri explosionshark hc'd that rachel paid for chloe's sleeve, mogatrat (i think) hc'd that rachel initially went to get her nips pierced with chloe (that's a longtime fan hc now idk who started that one) but chickened out at the last minute, i think she also hc'd that chloe made the earring for rachel which is cute too
