first birthdays are hard. especially when you haven't been together long, not knowing where the line is for price or thought as to not look totally psycho-obsessive or to set the bar too high. this was the case for Spencer; you two had been together four months and your birthday was rapidly approaching.

he was totally out of ideas, you already had a necklace from him that you'd never taken off, you had enough clothes to cover the path from his place to yours three times over, and a card seemed too simple boring even. he was well and truly screwed.

or so he thought.

whilst he was doing his paperwork the night before your big day Penelope came and sat in front of him the sounds of her heels clacking against the polished floors and the bracelets jangling on her wrist being the only indicators of her presence until she abruptly pulls his case file away as if ready for an interrogation; which she totally was.

"So what are you getting your prettygirl?" she asks teasingly, dragging out the 'o', however, being the self proclaimed profiler by association she is she doesn't miss the flash of panic on his face before he answers.

"i don't know maybe dinner and shopping?" he replies the statement definitely coming off as more of a question.

"oh baby no!" she practically gasps "you're coming to my place after this for an intervention because that is despicable!"

spencer just looks at her like the weight of the world has been lifted from his shoulders "you're a life saver Garcia." he murmurs as he sinks back into his chair.

she gets up before saying "i know i am!" and bounces off before stopping abruptly half way across the bullpen and says "remember to bring some spare socks!"

that statement alone fills spencer with utter bewilderment but he knows better than to question THE Penelope Garcia so that night he makes his way over to her place, the spare socks from his go-bag stuffed in his pocket.

"Come in! Come in!" She exclaimed making some sort of techno song as she disabled all her alarms and finally opening the door to the lair.

her apartment is a whirlwind of colours, eccentric patterns and cat themed everything; it wouldn't look out of place in those sitcoms you were hopelessly infatuated with, and he expected nothing less.

As she guides him over to the living room he finally asked "so why are extra socks helping with birthday presents... they won't even fit her..?" to which Penelope beams back with "for a sock monkey!" Like it's the most obvious thing in the world.

"A sock what..?" He looks at her, well and truly confused; a rare sight from the resident genius. "monkey!" Garcia finishes as if repeating it again will make it any clearer, and when his expression doesn't shift she lets out a dramatic sigh "just trust the process Einstein!"

The next two hours are a whirl of fabric scissors, sewing needles, wool and buttons. Only pausing for a snack break and for Spencer to cut a loc of his hair off to put in the monkeys heart. but it turns out perfect, thanks to his apparent subconscious dresscode the monkey ended up being an array of your favourite colours, stars, stripes and of course adorable little button eyes; even a little hat, curtesy of Sergio for giving it to the cause. Before he can even thank penelope he's being shoved out of the apartment to 'surprise his prettygirl'

you're woken up that birthday by the smell of coffee and pastries bought by Spencer who has - using the emergency spare key - let himself into your place a half hour before. As you stumble into the kitchen you're met with his beautifully perfect frame even his hair was perfect "it should be illegal to look this good in the mornings" you joke

"good morning birthday girl!" He exclaims after an involuntary eye roll at your prior statement and hands you a metallic silver gift bag:

from which you pull a cute little sock monkey!

"Oh Spencer its adorable!" you gush "did you make it yourself?" He looks down at your beaming face, it was nothing like the smile you got from shopping or jewelry its was pure, and that's more than anything he could've ever asked for. "I had a bit of help" he admits before continuing "but it has some of my hair in its heart so you can hug it when I'm away" its enough to make you cry as you hug him tight, still positively giddy with joy.

"Its the best thing I've ever got and I'm going to keep it safe forever and ever" you proclaim and Spencer kisses the crown of your head. "Happy birthday Princess"

Aventurine was a great husband. god, he was the best. even when you got sick, he almost didn’t bat an eye. 

notice how i said almost? the only time he panicked was while you were freshly dating and you caught the flu from one of his coworkers.

now fast forward to now. Aventurine called in and told Jade and a couple of other people, telling them he was staying home and taking care of you. you caught the flu again- he didn’t tell anyone again, you’ve just had it before. 

fuck flu season, it sucks.

 so here you were, in bed. the covers were near your calves because your body couldn’t decide if it was too hot or too cold. Aventurine quietly knocked on the door to the bedroom (like he doesn’t live with you, but whatever) and heard you rasp out a throaty “come in”. 

the sight before you makes you want to cry: Aventurine has a tray of soup, water, a drink (you assume has electrolytes in it, hence it being a bit of a strange color), and some medicine for you. you sit up in bed slowly, and as you do, you notice Aventurine set the tray down on the nightstand next to the bed and rush to help you. 

“Easy, love,” he whispers as he helps you sit up. he puts his hand on your forehead and sighs, “at least your fever is going down a bit. How do you feel, darling?”

“like death,” you croak out, which causes your husband to giggle. 

“well, we can’t have that. We vowed to be together in sickness and in health, after all,” he winks at you. He then grabs the tray and sets it in your lap. 

“I called Jade to call off work… and your parents. i’ve taken care of sick people, but not people with the flu sick, you know,” he says as he places the thermometer in front of you, “open up, please.” 

you hum, listening and complying. 

“I called your mom and asked her what to do. she taught me over the phone how to make the soup that helps you most when you’re sick. she said you’d be feeling better in no time and to take you to her if you get worse, ‘god forbid’,” he said the last two words with emphasized air quotes as he took the thermometer from you. you notice your eyes drooping after Aventurine feeds you some soup and helps you down some water and an electrolyte-filled drink. 

“Rest now, love. I’ll be here when you wake up,” Aventurine says as he strokes the top of your head, moving a strand of hair behind your ear.

you fall asleep feeling so loved.
