Deltarune.com “Secret” Pages
People have already catalogued the secret pages in Google Docs (1, 2), but they’re a little scattered for my tastes, so I thought I’d try to make my own. This is a compilation of information discovered by myself and many other people, so lots of credit goes to everyone who contributed to the linked documents!
1 & 2. code & code/comments
The bottom of the sweepstakes page contains this banner...
Tumblr media
...which links to this “blog post” in which Noelle mentions the official Dragon Blazers website (an in-universe video game many Deltarune characters play) updating with “a bunch of weird links.” The number of links mentioned was originally lower (the first reported number seems to be 14), but increased as more pages went live on the Deltarune site, capping out at 26.
Tumblr media
The included audio file, midi-holiday-country.mp3, is a country-style rendition of jingle bells. In the post comments, Berdly attempts to convince Noelle to make him a mod or admin of the blog, which she rejects by alleging that her computer is bugged and the admin panel won’t work.
Berdly also complains that someone keeps prank calling him, as he has included his phone number in his username; the number was originally a static fake phone number (beginning with 555) but was at some point changed to randomize itself on every page load; it still has a 555 area code, and the number itself is one digit too long to be valid.
Jockington comments to ask if Dragon Blazers contains sports; it doesn’t.
3. icee
The sweepstakes page also displays one of three randomized banners. this one...
Tumblr media
...links to a page titled Have you seen him? containing a submission from Noelle as a young child (with poor spelling and grammar) in which she encountered a creepy Ice-e’s pizza box. As we know from her room in Queen’s mansion, Noelle has had something of a fixated fear of the Ice-e character, worrying that he’s real and potentially dangerous.
Tumblr media
The mention of Noelle’s sister at the end there is exciting! Let’s see what that links to!
4. december
Tumblr media
...Oh. Well, you will notice this is of course a fake 404 page. It could certainly be a reference to the fact that December is known to be missing, perhaps even trapped outside of reality/within the game’s code itself. The note “had its name changed” could also be trying to make a point that Noelle’s sister doesn’t actually go by that name anymore; After all, we’ve mostly heard her referred to as...
5. dess
This page doesn’t seem to be linked from anywhere, but its existence may be intentionally hinted at by the above page. It contains a sprite of a guitar, and the page title reads * (It’s a red guitar).
Tumblr media
When the guitar is clicked, a version of Lost Girl plays. The song is called findher.mp3, and was also uploaded as a short, titled decemberholiday.ogg, to the holidaygirl1225 Youtube channel (we might circle back on this in another post, as this one is going to be atrociously long).
All of this suggests that the song Lost Girl is indeed intended to be associated, at least in part, with our very own lost girl Dess Holiday, and that Dess may have played guitar. Interestingly, when Deltarune Chapter 2 is hacked so you can attempt to equip the Puppet Scarf to Noelle, she comments that it “feels like guitar strings.” Noelle is known to draw comparisons to things that remind her of her sister.
6. secretpipis
Now, let’s get back to those banners.
Tumblr media
This one links to a page with an image of a single pipis, which plays a crowd gasping sound effect (crowd_gasp.mp3) when clicked. the page is titled You lost! Not much else to this one.
Tumblr media
7. secret
Tumblr media
The final banner we’re looking at links to a page titled But what’s behind door number one? containing a 4x4 grid of blue cabinets.
Tumblr media
Clicking each cabinet opens it, accompanied by a sound effect labeled wing.mp3. Most will simply show the open empty cabinet and play a crowd groaning sound effect (crowd_ouch.mp3). The following cabinets will trigger different effects:
Row 1, Column 2: A Ralsei plush appears, accompanied by the adoring crowd_aww.mp3.
Row 2, Column 3: A pipis appears, accompanied by crowd_gasp.mp3.
Row 3, Column 4: A photo of an empty gumball machine appears, accompanied by crowd_ahh.mp3.
Row 4, Column 1: A cropped screenshot from the Wikipedia page for the website Superbad, a “web art” project from the late 90s.
Row 4, Column 3: Links to...
8. chair
This eerie page contains a picture of a chair with a cloth draped over its back.
Tumblr media
Clicking the chair changes the page title from But what if it could... to ...get darker than dark? and swaps the chair with a dark, undulating version of itself, accompanied by the sound effect water.mp3.
Tumblr media
There is also a smallish chance that clicking the chair will result in a “jumpscare” consisting of Spamton’s pixellated eyes, accompanied by the creepy laughter sound face.mp3; this jumpscare will quickly redirect to the main sweepstakes page.
9. catpetterz
Linked in the description of the “Fur-thentic Cardboard Box,” this is another blog post from Noelle in which she discusses one of her favorite games, Cat Petterz 2. The accompanying audio file is a corrupted-sounding version of the first one, midi-holiday-country.mp3, except this one is deceptively titled midi-holiday_country.mp3 – the second dash is replaced with an underscore.
Tumblr media
I love Noelle’s discussions of weird, vaguely unsettling video game lore and mechanics. It feels very realistic to how many games, especially older ones, have aspects that aren’t inherently outright scary, but that, especially to a young mind, can come across as creepy and disturbing. I remember having plenty of irrational fears around strange video game glitches as a kid!
The link at the end here leads us to...
10. egg
Another entry from Noelle, although it seems the black and gray pages represent her personal blog or digital journal, as opposed to the pink blog where she talks about games specifically – though the page title on these entries is still “Welcome to holidaygirl1225’s game secrets, glitches, and theories blog!” so I guess it’s all supposed to be part of the same blog. The link at the end links back to /code.
Tumblr media
In this post we learn that Noelle encountered a “special egg” in Cat Petterz that never hatched, made a weird sound when clicked, and “left home due to happiness” after being cared for as opposed to running away from neglect. She suspects the problem arose from having too many incompatible mods, but the fact that this page is linked from a second source – and that Noelle is certain the egg had a name despite being unable to remember what it was – suggests another possible source of said egg.
11. man
Sources say this page actually existed on the Deltarune website before the sweepstakes. I believe I remember seeing it as well, but I couldn’t tell you with 100% confidence. It mimics the strange hidden rooms in Chapters 1 and 2 in which Kris encounters the man who gives them eggs.
Tumblr media
The page is titled * (Behind the tree.). – yes, with a period inside and outside the parenthesis – and clicking the space above the tree links to /egg.
12. bluecircle
Continuing Noelle’s Cat Petterz 2 saga, in this post – linked from the description of the Pipis Bath Rug – Noelle recounts the time she put some “random letters and numbers” from a mysterious spam email into the game as a mod.
Tumblr media
When loaded, the game created a glitchy creature consisting of a single blue circle, capable of reproducing on its own until it created so many copies that the game crashed.
I wonder if Noelle’s note about how she “couldn’t explain why anyone liked it, but it was really funny to see who did XD” is meant to reflect people’s unexpected reaction to Spamton as a character đŸ€”
Once again, the link at the end leads back to /code.
13. kris dreemurr kriss
Let’s wrap up Noelle’s last two blog posts. They’re both marked as private, only visible to friends. This one is linked in the description for the Heart Locket. In it, Noelle recalls when she and Kris were younger and would play together at her house. Apparently Kris would sometimes play piano. The page is accompanied by an audio file called pianpian.mp3 that consists of... somewhat odd piano music.
Tumblr media
So it seems Kris used to play piano, though we know from interacting with the hospital piano that they seem unable to do so while under the player’s control.
14. the n3w3st g1rl g1rl
Linked from the description of the Engraved Wristwatch – and no, I’m not sure what it means that the URL is spelled like that. Here Noelle describes an incident, likely shortly after Susie joined their class, in which Susie threatened Kris and said their mom would be happier without them. Yikes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s interesting how Noelle seemingly recognizes how brutal this behavior is while still retaining her desire for Susie to push her around. Other people in other posts have already talked at length about Susie’s potential reasons for saying this stuff and how Kris might feel about it, so I won’t linger on it here.
15. d a m n y o u t e n n a
Now this is an interesting one! Linked in the description of the Spamton Engraved Wedding Ring – specifically, the text reading [It hurts! It Hurts!]. The page is titled DELETE THIS !. We’ve got a TV with a red X over it, and Spamton’s ramblings about how everything is someone’s fault, and that everyone will pay, except...
Tumblr media
Mike, whose name is written in black so as to blend in with the background.
Tenna, of course, likely refers to a TV antenna. Is this another character involved in the Chapter 3 Dark World and Spamton’s backstory?
Clicking on the TV changes the page to TV static and the title to YOU’RE EARLY!, accompanied by the sound effect tv_static_bad.mp3. Scrolling down this page reveals some difficult-to-read white text that says “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? YOU SHOULDN’T BE HERE!” At the bottom of the page are two clickable images, camouflaged with the background as they also consist of TV static. The upper one changes the page yet again to a blue screen, titled AREN’T YOU FORGETTING SOMETHING? When you scroll back to the top, you will find a... door?
Tumblr media
Which takes us to...
16. icepalace glaceir
(Yes, it’s spelled glaceir. Also for the record, the “broken image” is in fact a properly embedded image called screen.gif that intentionally mimics the old-school broken image icon.) Did I say we wrapped up Noelle’s blog posts? Sorry, I lied. It’s 2:30 in the morning where I am right now!
Tumblr media
Ah yes, more old childhood video game weirdness. Noelle talks about a maze in Dragon Blazers where you can get stuck if you access it without the necessary character in your party. Except, in her persistent curiosity, she found a way to a door, and was able to repeat this despite feeling like the process is different every time. Unfortunately, she could never figure out how to open that door...
17. ramb
back on the static screen, we will find that the lower clickable image takes us to a... different door. The page title is Where could this be?
Tumblr media
Clicking the door changes the title to Welcome to the Green Room! and we are greeted by a very pleasant looking room with some sofas, TVs, a bar (with a little Maus hanging up in it? Also swords?), and perhaps some sort of vending machine. A nice chill variant of the already quite chill Hip Shop, called greenroom.mp3. This seems like a shop area that will be in Chapter 3.
Tumblr media
Each door leads to a different page. The one on the left takes us to...
18. weather
Here we seem to get a sneak peek of a couple weather-based Darkners we’ll likely encounter in Chapter 3! Exciting stuff! For some reason, the title of this page is You’re the Annoying Now Dog! (a reference to the website You’re the Man Now, Dog).
Tumblr media
Clicking on these guys gets us a full page of them doing a little attack animation, large text that says THE WEATHER ALWAYS STICKS TOGETHER, and a variant of Rude Buster called battle_vapor.mp3.
Tumblr media
i feel it’s worth mentioning that the 3D text effect was achieved by duplicating, resizing, repositioning, and recoloring every line multiple times (about 30-40 times each).
19. changingroom
Back in the Green Room, the door with the star on it takes us to the “changing room,” a page titled (Private...). A pink curtain awaits, just begging to be clicked.
Tumblr media
Doing so cues up the “wing” sound effect again, and reveals a “Shadowman” putting on a sock. After a moment, he screams, using the aptly-titled scream.mp3.
Tumblr media
There is also a chance that, instead of a Shadowman, you will find a tiny spinning Lancer!
Tumblr media
Doing nothing will result in the curtain simply closing again, allowing you to open and close it as many times as you wish. However, you can also click on the Shadowman or Lancer before the curtain closes to go to, well, /shadowmen or /lancer! So let’s look at those.
20. shadowmen
More exciting stuff! This appears to be a preview of a Chapter 3 battle against Darkners called Shadowmen, sock-wearing cartoony gangster type characters that wield saxophones and shotguns. We get to see the Fun Gang “knock their socks off” with this cool group attack that for some reason involves wearing slick suits!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
battle_vapor.mp3 also accompanies this battle. This page is also linked from the description of the Ralsei Nurse Costume For Plush.
21. lancer
Just a lil picture of a very small round Lancer, also linked in the description of the Lancer Cookie. Shares the You’re the Annoying Now Dog! title with /weather.
Tumblr media
Clicking on Lancer does a similar thing as /weather as well, showing us a full page of repeating, spinning Lancers and large text that says HO HO HO! YOU JUST GOT LANCERED!!! with the same 3D text trick, accompanied by a fast-paced chiptune rendition of Lancer’s theme, called lancer-spin.mp3.
Tumblr media
22. tv
Okay! Back to /ramb (the Green Room)! Finally, the door on the right leads to...
Tumblr media
A TV, turned off. No, really, that’s all that’s on this page. I’m looking at the source code right now. It’s just this. The page title simply reads * It’s off.
23. bluebubble.rodeo
This is an odd one, as it’s not even technically hosted on deltarune.com but is its own standalone URL – which is found on the Spamton Toiler Paper. Not in the description for the toilet paper. ON the toilet paper.
Tumblr media
Yeah, if you zoomed in to read that and decided to type in that URL, you would be greeted by a picture of Kris and Susie in cowboy attire on a page titled Get ready for 2 minutes of mildly entertaining shoot-out action! Clicking on the image plays a whip sound effect (whip.mp3).
Tumblr media
24. blink
A page titled What? depciting Susie in her dark world outfit lying down asleep.
Tumblr media
Clicking on her will cause her to open her eyes, appearing confused. She will proceed to blink at random intervals, with each blink accompanied by blink.mp3.
Tumblr media
Clicking on her again will put her back to sleep.
25. sighting
A page titled SIGHTING 1997 depicting a slow zoom in on a grainy black and white photograph of a Spamton plush sitting on a toilet. Clicking anywhere on the page switches to a different photo and causes digitalroots.mp3 to start playing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
26. dog
I... don’t know why I saved this one for last. It’s not the most exciting page. I was just trying to group things together in ways that made sense, and these last few pages sort of wound up here at the end. Sorry.
Tumblr media
This one is pretty straightforward. Titled HALL OF FAME, it’s linked from the description of the Championship Belt. Clicking on the image causes the Annoying Dog to appear in the picture frame, with the words BEST INU emblazoned across the plaque, and playing a triumphant variation of HEY EVERY ! simply called dog.mp3.
Tumblr media
conclusion?
So, depending on how you count up all these pages – does /code count even though it introduces the idea of the secret pages? does /code/comments count as its own page? – that brings us to 26 pages, the final number mentioned in Noelle’s original blog post.
It took me a long time to write up and format this post! I think we’re approaching the 5 hour mark. So I hope the information here is cool and interesting to everyone, and if anyone has any questions, comments, addendums, or corrections, feel free to let me know.
Oh, and if you haven’t already, be sure to check out Toby’s September status update! Some neat stuff is in there.

With regards to planning an eCommerce business site, basic is in every case better. The more components you have on the page (Colors! Standard Ads! ALL THE POP-UPS!), the more it detracts from the whole reason behind the site bringing a deal to a close.
You needn't bother with a huge load of extravagant accessories on your web based business site everything they do is go about as interruption. Keep your plan clear, clean, and basic and maintain the attention on the deal.

What makes my image unique in relation to other eCommerce business shops out there?
What show improvement over any other individual available?
When you know what your identity is, you can work it into the marking of your eCommerce business website. Furthermore, that marking? It'll assist work with trusting with your crowd and drive genuine deals simultaneously.
Tumblr media
3. Adopt the thought process of a site guest
Assuming you need your web based business web architecture to interface with your crowd, you need to think like your crowd. Eventually, there are only a couple of things your potential clients need in a web based business experience a webpage that is not difficult to explore, all around planned, and makes the most common way of shopping simple, clear, and bother free.
Furthermore, assuming you need your eCommerce business shop to succeed, you would be wise to give them those things.
During the plan interaction, come at the situation from your guest's perspective. What sort of format will be simplest for them to explore? How might you arrange your items such that bodes well for the end client? How might you improve on the checkout interaction?
At the point when you think like your client, you can expect what they need from your eCommerce business store and afterward plan your website to address those issues.
4. Use tone for your potential benefit
Picking the shadings for your web based business webpage is about something other than saying "Indeed, red is my #1 shading, so. we should make every one of the things red!" Color is a very integral asset and on the off chance that you comprehend the brain science behind shading, you can utilize it for your potential benefit (and drive some genuine deals simultaneously).
Various tones can rouse various sentiments, feelings, and activities from individuals in this way, assuming you need your eCommerce business webpage to change over, you need to utilize those shading motivations for your potential benefit. Now a days, eCommerce mobile app develop with the website. so, you can grow your business and attract new customers through mobile app.
In this way, for instance, assuming you need individuals to make a buy, make the buy button stand apart with a brilliant shading like red. As per shading brain research, red rouses sensations of energy and enthusiasm, which are driving components behind spending and studies show that creating a button red can expand changes by an astounding 34%.
Or on the other hand, assuming you need to up your validity, fuse blue into your website architecture. Blue isn't just an all around cherished shading, but on the other hand it's been displayed to build sensations of trust, making it a go-to in the business world (there's an explanation blue shows up in the greater part, everything being equal).
The fact is, shading is one of the most incredible assets in your plan tool stash and in the event that you realize how to utilize it, it can gigantically affect your eCommerce business plan.
5. Utilize top notch pictures
In the realm of website architecture, it's generally expected information that pictures increment changes (for instance, one late contextual analysis showed that fusing more significant pictures into a web composition expanded transformations by more than 40%). What's more, that is much more evident with regards to eCommerce business.
Getting proficient pictures of every one of your items (and having pictures of your item from numerous various points) goes far in building certainty and confidence in your clients. On the off chance that they feel sure that they realize what they're purchasing, they're bound to make a buy. Be that as it may, in case there are no pictures of the item they need to purchase (or simply a solitary, bad quality picture), they will feel more reluctant to make the buy and your transformations will tank accordingly.
Help yourself out and have a lot of excellent pictures of whatever you're selling on your eCommerce business webpage. Your transformations will much obliged.
6. Make your substance searchable
You can go through days creating long portrayals for the items on your eCommerce business website, however we have news for you nobody will understand it.
Exploration shows that most site guests just read about 20% of the text on some random page. Rather than perusing content in exactly the same words, they basically examine the text searching for key data in this way, assuming you need to make yourself clear (and drive deals simultaneously), you need to make your substance readable.
The simpler to filter your substance, the almost certain your crowd will retain your key informing and the more probable you'll have the option to make a deal.
7. Make it look proficient
The premise of an eCommerce business webpage is that you are requesting that your site guests buy something from you. What's more, accordingly, you're requesting that they turn over delicate data, similar to their Visa data. Which they're not going to feel happy with doing if your site doesn't look profesh.
Putting resources into an expert site is an absolute necessity assuming you need to construct entrust with your clients and fostering that trust is an unquestionable requirement assuming you need your web based business store to succeed.
The fact is, assuming you need your clients to treat you in a serious way, you need to show them you view yourself pretentiously and the best way to do that is with an expert website composition.
Tumblr media
8. Utilize social evidence
One more approach to construct that very significant trust? Social confirmation.
At the point when you're planning your eCommerce business website, search for approaches to show your potential clients the positive criticism you've gotten from your current clients. Add an evaluations area where individuals can rate your items (and afterward get as numerous 5 star surveys as you can). Add a tributes area where you include client photographs with a statement or two with regards to what an extraordinary encounter they had working with you. Request that clients survey your items and what they like with regards to them and afterward add them to your blog.
The more your site guests see that others have had a positive encounter shopping on your site (regardless of whether that is through surveys or tributes) the more reliable you'll show up and the more your changes will go up therefore.
9. Make classes simple to explore
Nothing and we don't mean anything will kill a deal quicker than inconvenient item pages. On the off chance that your site guests need to click around ten distinct menus before they discover the item they're searching for, they will scram quick and snap their direction right to a contender's site.
Make your item classifications and item pages simple to explore. Make it simple for your clients to look for items and to channel items by things like tone, size, or item type. The simpler you make your classes and pages to explore, the simpler it will be for your clients to discover what they're searching for and the simpler it will be for them to make a buy.
10. Make checkout a breeze
Make your checkout page plan spotless, basic, and simple to explore. Give your clients the alternative to enlist for your site or to look at as a visitor. Make everything about the cycle gem understood: what data you need to handle the buy (and where they need to enter it), the diverse delivery choices accessible (and the amount they cost), and what to do on the off chance that there's an issue with their request or they need to do a return. When the buy is finished, direct your clients to an affirmation page so they know it all.

Meditation #2
Intro:
I wasn't really sure where to start with this meditation. I was really intrigued by last weeks discussion and readings, especially our introduction to Tarot. I thought it would be interesting to recreate a similar experience but digitally. For this meditation, I decided to work on a web-page, as I also wanted to improve on those skills.
Idea:
I want to create a webpage which can guide a querent through a situation by drawing cards which have individual divinatory meanings. This is clearly inspired by Tarot readings.
How it works:
Ideally, the user would land on the first page and follow the prompts given:
Hello, how are you today?
Today, I'll be guiding you through a situation you may be concerned about or seek clarity on.
Before I start the reading, look through the divinatory meanings of each cardNow it's time. Let me cast a reading for you.
[images and text for each card]
Think about a situation you'd like some clarity or insight on.
Close your eyes and breathe in...Hold it for 5 seconds and breathe out.
Place your hand on your mouse or trackpad and do this again. Think about your situation and keep that as your focus.
Bring your energy forward and let it escape through your fingers.
Close your eyes and breathe in...Hold it for 5 seconds and breathe out.
Once you're ready, click the cast button.
The querent would keep their situation in mind as they click on the cast button. The webpage would then load six different cards (randomly.)
Each card represents:
1 = past 2 = present 3 = challenges 4 = strengths 5 = advice 6 = outcome
This was inspired by the Tarot spread we did in class.
I designed 8 different cards for this prototype. Ideally, I would want to create about 20-24 cards. I used photoshop for this process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outcome:
https://sharatihani.github.io/oracle/home.html
Reflection
Unfortunately, I didn't manage to make a working webpage which actually randomized each card outcome, as my Javascript knowledge is very limited :( Instead, I focused on the designs of the cards before working on the code and I realized I couldn't figure it out in time. I ended up using a template from one of my previous projects instead. Therefore, the webpage only shows one set outcome for now. I spent a bit of time trying to change the code to make it do what I wanted it to, but had no luck. However, I really want to work on this and actually get it to generate/draw six random cards.
Overall, I still think I like the idea and I do wish to expand and improve upon what I have so far. I feel like this is a good first step/guide and I would definitely be able to make this a working site. There is still many aspects of cleromancy that are present such as providing some kind of answer (semantic context.) The querent is the user and the reader is technically the computer, moreover there is a discrete set of possible outcomes (would be working if I figure out.)

Artist Interviews (2011) - Sarah Mensinga
Recently I got a request to repost the student email interviews I did with some established artists back on my blogspot in 2011. They really did help me, and I’m even more amazed now, than I was then that they took the time to reply. So here’s part 1/3, starting with concept artist and writer Sarah Mensinga, whose thoughts on style are always at the top of my mind on the topic even now. :
Tumblr media
[Sarah Mensinga] is an illustrator, animator, and comic artist who is currently taking time to work on her own graphic novel called The Wellington Division. I first read her work The Changeling in Flight, and I think her comics are lovely and endearing!
Tumblr media
Interview 1) What sort of medium or programs to you use for your work? I usually start with paper and color-erase pencils. I scan that and paint it digitally, usually with Photoshop, sometime with both Painter and Photoshop. I love the look of Illustrator, but I've never had the chance to sit down and really figure it out. 2) What are some of your favorite websites/magazines/books/publications for inspiration? I add nearly every cool art blog I find to my google reader, which I try to check everyday. Most of the blogs I follow are conceptual artists in animation-related feilds. My newest discovery is ha.com, which is an online auction site. If you get a free membership, you can browse their lots and study high-resolution images of some fantastic illustrators. As far as books go, I have a huge collection of visual reference books. I love books on architecture and costume, most of all. 3) What was your favorite professional assignment that you've ever done? I once got to design some Wizard of Oz dolls for some product pitch. I don't think the project ever materialized, but it was a lot of fun. 4) You have a really distinctive, painterly style has it always been that way? How did you get there? Ha, it's a bit of a relief that you say that. I still feel that my painting is a bit unpredictable and that I'm not entirely happy with my process. I went to an arts high school and for my final year I focused on oil-painting and illustration. I think that gave me a pretty good foundation for learning how to digitally paint, but it wasn't until I started professionally character designing that I had to knuckle down and really learn how to digitally paint well. I realized that if I wanted my designs to catch the eyes of producers and directors who weren't necessarily accustomed to looking at line drawings, I'd better figure out how to make my designs look more like they would on screen. To learn, I asked friends who painted well a lot of questions, I did a lot of terrible paintings, I searched for tutorials and I studied the work of other artists I admired. I still do all those things. :) 5) What sort of process do you have? Do you work on many pieces at once or one at a time? My process now is a bit up in the air, but that's just because I'm not doing working full-time. (My kids are very little and I'm home with them.) In general though, I do a fairly tight line-drawing and scan it. I usually look for some photo (often completely unrelated) to create a color palette, and often tweak it even further in photoshop. I do a rough painted pass, keeping as many things on layers as I can and then I save and tighten and polish. The polishing part always takes forever. :) I do often have several projects on the go, both story-related and art-related. I try to focus on them one at a time, though. 6) What do you do when you can't come up with ideas? How do you manage stress? If I'm working on a professional project, usually I have enough direction from a client that it's not difficult to build on their ideas. But sometimes if I'm working on my own art and there is no deadline, I feel a bit lost. Often, I start pulling reference books down from my shelves and open them to random pages, looking for inspiration. Other times, I think about something I could draw that would make my daughter or husband smile. As for stress, I push through it! I'm definitely the sort of person that just gets more determined when confronted with something that is stressing me out. The more I work on it, the faster it will be done and the faster is will stop stressing me out. :) 7) How do you advertise yourself/get work? What works for you? At the moment, I'm sort of anti-advertising. :) Since I'm home full-time with my kids, and trying to focus on writing, I don't really want to be inundated with freelance projects. When my kids are older, I'll probably try to go back to a studio because I like how social it is. Or at the very least, I'll look into getting an art rep. I'm terrible at negotiating contracts.When I do want to advertise though, I find attending comic-conventions with my portfolio and lots of nice business cards pointing to my website works very well. Being active on my blog, helps too. 8) Is your personal work particularly different from your professional work? Yes. When working professionally, I often work on designs or draw subjects I might not otherwise. I think it's a good thing, it pushes me out of my comfort zone. My personal work usually revolves around stories I have on the go. 9) What's the best advice you would give a student aspiring to work as an illustrator?  Don't go looking for your style. The best kind of style is something that naturally comes into your work and you can't get rid of it even if you wanted to. That way, it's really, genuinely you, it will set you apart and it will be unique.Never put limitations on yourself. Never tell yourself "this is as good as I will ever get" and feel frustrated. Sometimes it feels that way, but as long as you try to stay positive and keep trying to learn, you will always be improving throughout your career and new doors will open, which is exciting! :)
She's so nice! I felt more comfortable asking her random questions. She wrote such long, helpful replies. You can find Sarah over here on Twitter and Instagram!

Week 12 - The design document
For this assignment, our group decided to settle on an 2D adventure game with a top-down angle that more resembled Enter the gungeon than Hotline Miami. In it the player/environment will be viewed more from a side view than from above to create some sense of depth and they would be able to more in all 4 directions. This layout/game type was chosen partially due to our limited experience in making of such game, the requirement for the code aspect of the assignment and due to our own preference.
Tumblr media
The main objective of the game is for the player character to escape a maze-like mines that have monsters crawling through them with only their AI companion providing them with light. In this situation not only the players range of sight is limited but it is also outside their control by being given to a NPC that will possibly lag behind them, forcing the player either take their time and be caution with traversing the labyrinth or to be brash and rush though the dark mines. This visual restriction is commonly used in horror games to create tension and sense of lack of control.
“[
] biologically speaking, darkness is not the normal setting for human activity, it is self-evident that the necessity to perform various activities in the dark impose a considerable strain upon man, especially since the primacy of vision over the other senses is particularly conspicuous in the human species.” (Devereux, 1949)
Moreover, horror games provide players with a sort of challenge, where they are put in an artificial simulation of a threat which would stimulate them and upon winning (surviving) they would feel a sense of accomplishment and relief.
“While frightening media may be initially aversive, people high in sensation seeking and intellect/imagination, in particular, like intellectual stimulation and challenge and expect not just negative but also positive emotions from horror consumption. They brave the initially aversive response to simulate threats and so enter a positive feedback loop by which they attain adaptive mastery through coping with virtual simulated danger.” (Clasen, Kjeldgaard-Christiansen and Johnson, 2020)
Though in comparison to many horror games where they not only remove players ability to see but also the ability to retaliate against a threat, we decided to allow the player to fight back (though we are not yet sure if it will come to fruition due to time restriction and out current skill level). The players would be able to attack and kill the monsters and pick up health items if they get hurt together with being tasked to pick up keys to unlock the exit doors of the maze. The player is in no way forced to confront or kill the enemies and can decide to avoid them all together as they hunt for the keys which would provide the player with a choice, to either play aggressively or passively.
When it come to the topic of gameplay/player types the Four Bartle Types are always mentioned.
For them MUDs (multi-user dungeons or MMO’s as we now call them) was used as a basis to draw inspiration from, on what were the activities that players partook the most and receive the most enjoyment out off, which in turn created the archetypes.
Tumblr media
Above you could see the Interest Graph, on its x-axes are displayer the importance of the game world vs the other players while on its y-axes are displayed the way the player interacts (interacting with other things, acting upon other things). The 4 types are the complete extremes in this graph.
“Achievers are proud of their formal status in the game's built-in level hierarchy, and of how short a time they took to reach it.[
] Explorers are proud of their knowledge of the game's finer points, especially if new players treat them as founts of all knowledge.[
] Socialisers are proud of their friendships, their contacts and their influence.[
] Killers are proud of their reputation and of their oft-practiced fighting skills.” (Bartle, 1996)
Tumblr media
Though this model is the most mentioned one, later on in his other work called Designing Virtual Worlds Bartle has expanded to 8 types by adding a third aspect (z-axes), implicit/explicit motivation. The type included Griefer, Networker, Politician, Friend, Opportunist, Scientist, Planner and Hacker. So, to simply put it each of the 4 types mentioned before got an implicit and explicit version to them. Griefers are implicit Killers, Politicians are explicit Killers, Scientists are explicit Explorers, Hackers are implicit Explorers, Networkers are explicit Socializers, Friends are implicit Socializers, Planners are explicit Achievers and finally Opportunists are implicit Achievers.
For out game Achiever or more specifically Planner type fits best for both the passive and active playstyles, since both playstyles require the individual to go out of their way to play that certain way. It can also be argued that Killers are more fitting to KILL enemies but due to enemies being AI and by extend being aspects of the game rather than actual adversaries, its more fitting for Achiever to defeat them. Moreover, Killers are said to be more leaning in player than game world aspect and since our game doesn’t contain any Player vs Player gameplay it simply seems like an ill fit.
 Another small attribute that we wanted to add to the game is a number of objectives that will appear on top left of the screen, giving the player false instructions. For example, at the beginning of the game the player character will spawn in a room with objective to ‘open the door with a key’ but in reality, there is no key and the player is meant to just interact with the door to open it so to simply put they need to disobey the directions that the game provides. The reason for that function is partially due to see how the player will behave when they are given instructions that were clearly wrong and are meant to mislead them, would they continue to follow them out of instinct, still follow them but by doing the opposite of what is asked or disregard them all together and use their own judgement.
Tumblr media
 Interestingly enough in a publication called Principles of Social Psychology by Charles Stangor covered an experiment on Obedience, Power, and Leadership. For it they got a participant and an actor to play the roles of learner and teacher, the random draw was rigged to that the actor always could be the learner in that situation. After that the teacher together with the experiment conductor was place in a separate room from the learner so that they could not see them, and they need to read out an assortment of word associations (for example ‘blue sofa’). If the learner got them wrong, the teacher needed to administer a shock to them, increasing the volage with each consequent mistake. In actually the learner was not actually shocked but a prerecord message of their reaction still played, to see how the teacher will react.
Before the study was conducted hower the reasearcher explained the experiment to three groups of individuals (college students, middle-class adults, and psychiatrists) and asked how likely would it be for people to shock the student at max setting (450 volts) and the results were rather optimistic (1% or 2%). The results on the other hand were quite shocking. Even though the result varries after the innical shock done, 65% of the participants continued administering the punishment under the persistent preasure of the experiment conductor.
Of course the experimen conductor replicated the experiment in a vaiety of other situation, and one thing of note is that “in replications of the study in which the experimenter’s authority was decreased, obedience also declined.” (Jhangiani and Tarry, 2014).
This experiment show just how presense of a figure of autority can increase obedince, which would be interesting to see viewd from a perspective of the game since, its autority is often challenge (searching for bugs, and attempting to clip though levels)or viewed as a mear guideline.

Super Bowl squares results, template, how to play online, and more
Tumblr media
This standard, blank Super Bowl squares image has Kansas City along the top row and Tampa Bay along the left-most column. | PrintYourBracket.com
Why not try and make a little money while watching the Bucs and Chiefs battle in Super Bowl 55?
The 2021 Super Bowl matchup is between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Chiefs are making their fourth appearance, having lost in the first Super Bowl and then winning in Super Bowls 4 and 54. The Bucs are 1-0 in Super Bowls entering this year’s game, defeating the Raiders in 2003’s Super Bowl 37. With Super Bowl 55 taking place in Raymond James Stadium, the Bucs are the first Super Bowl team to play in their home stadium.
If what’s happening on the field isn’t quite enough to draw your attention, putting some money down on the action could make things a bit more interesting. Setting up a Super Bowl squares game is one way to stay involved in the matchup and may help keep the interest up for friends and/or guests who might not be as into football as the rest of us.
Chiefs vs. Buccaneers Super Bowl squares results
First Quarter
The Bucs lead the Chiefs, 7-3, after one quarter of play. Find that square that matches up with the the “7” on the Bucs’ side and the “3” on the Chiefs’ side.
Here’s a quick and simple way to play squares.
1. Create betting grid
This part is pretty simple. You just need a 10-by-10 grid with 100 squares to work with. You can either draw this out on a piece of paper, or use an online template.
Here’s an example of what your grid could look like, thanks to PrintYourBrackets.com:
Tumblr media
PrintYourBracket.com
2. Find people to play
Most people will be watching the Super Bowl on Sunday, so why not make a little coin while you’re at it? There are a few options to get people involved:
1) If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party, you can pass the grid around or set it up as an activity as guests enter. Guests who want to play can fill out as many squares as they want — typically for $1 per square. (You can do this ahead of the big game too, if you’re not watching with a group, and have the grid filled out ahead of time.)
2) If you’re hosting a strictly online game, you can use sites like SuperBowlSquares.org to help coordinate and organize players and bets.
Once the grid is full, the real fun part of the game begins.
3. Draw or assign numbers
Either by drawing numbers from a hat or using a random number generator, assign digits 0-9 (in the order they are drawn/generated) to the top row and left column of the grid. This makes each square an intersection of the two numbers — and will be what determines the payout for players.
4. Figuring out the winners
Typically, winnings for Super Bowl squares are determined at the end of each quarter, based on the final digit of each team’s score. For exampled, if the Bucs lead 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Super Bowl square player whose square intersects with “4” and “0” would win a share of the pot.
There are many different ways to play Super Bowl squares and a host of different rules you can enact. (Some people do only one big payout at the final whistle, instead of each quarter, etc...). There’s no limit to the number of ways to split the pot, so get creative and have fun — and hopefully, make a little bit of money.

Week 9 - Assignment Progress
Links and info on chosen issues...
https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2016/08/02/number-of-refugees-to-europe-surges-to-record-1-3-million-in-2015/

https://www.unrefugees.org/news/syria-refugee-crisis-explained/
https://www.unhcr.org/syria-emergency.html
The Syrian refugee crisis is the result of a March 2011 violent government crackdown on public demonstrations in support of a group of teenagers who were arrested for anti-government graffiti in the southern town of Daraa. As violence increased, families began to flee. Within two months, the first refugee camps opened in Turkey – by March 2013, more than 1 million people had fled Syria. Today, 12 million Syrians are displaced from their homes and more than a million Syrian children have been born in exile.
Tumblr media
Finding the data...
I have decided that the data that I am going to use is going to be the number of people that are exiting Syria and where they are going (distance) depending on what types of statistics I can find...
https://data.humdata.org/dataset/unhcr-global-trends-forced-displacement-in-2019-data
Tumblr media
Whilst searching for some relevant data found the site above which links to a 2019 data of the displaced people of Syria and where they relocated and has a lot of other data that I will have to sort through. But this seems like a very promising set of data.
From the data I gathered all the information that I would need from the table. The distances although were not in the table which means that I had to manually find the distance from Syria to each of the individual countries.
Tumblr media
Even though this is a very promising start to my project I noticed one issue off the bat and that was the numbers themselves. Because there is 3.6 million people that went to Turkey and 14 people that went to Algeria this posed an issue. Firstly because a number like 3.6 million is very difficult for processing to deal with, but usually we would simply divide to reduce them to a number that we are able to handle much easier. The issue with that is that the smaller numbers like the 14 that went to Algeria would become infinitely small.
This means that I have a choice...
- I could either priorities the data and make it so I use the top 10 results or how ever many I want to use.
- Use a technique that was mentioned by Tim called Mapping that can change the original number range and you can set it at your personal number range.
- Or change the data that I am using and focus on a different area.
Putting the numbers into Processing...
Although, I haven’t set on how I am going to manipulate the data so it will work in a way that is visually appealing to the audience, I still want to make sure I have the basics of the code down. This way no matter the data I use I will still be on the right track.
Table dataSheet;
void setup() {  size (600,600);  //fullScreen();  dataSheet = loadTable("numberStats.csv","header");  //println (dataSheet.getRowCount());  println (dataSheet.getInt(3,0));
 for(int i = 0; i < 4; i++) {    strokeWeight (3);    stroke (0);    fill(255,0,0);  ellipse(width/2, height/2, dataSheet.getInt(i,0)/20, dataSheet.getInt(i,0)/20);
 }  //ellipse(50,50,50,50); }
void draw() {
}
Tumblr media
The code shown above is the code I used to creates that output and although I do understand this output is not successful at all at representing my chosen data set it is still a good indicator that I am using my code correctly.
Using the Top 10...
Table dataSheet;
void setup() {  size (2000,950);  dataSheet = loadTable("toptendataset.csv","header");  println (dataSheet.getRowCount());  println (dataSheet.getInt(0,3));
 for(int i=0; i<10; i++) {    ellipse(width/2, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,3), dataSheet.getInt(i,3));
 }
}
void draw() { }
Tumblr media
The circles above were displaced because the sizing of the canvas was incorrect so to change to the picture below I simply changed the size (2000,950); to fullScreen();
Playing with sizing...
Tumblr media
Went back into the data sheet and times the data by 2 to create what is shown below.
Tumblr media
Now this is too big
Tumblr media
Playing with layout...
I then inserted the data of the distance between the countries into the x-position of the ellipse function.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Table dataSheet;
void setup() { fullScreen();  dataSheet = loadTable("toptendataset.csv","header");  println (dataSheet.getRowCount());  println (dataSheet.getInt(0,4));
 for(int i=0; i<10; i++) {    ellipse((dataSheet.getInt(i,2)/3)+100, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));
 }
}
void draw() { }
This is the code from the last attempt of the positioning.
Attempting to use the map function on the data...
After some research into mapping
https://processing.org/reference/map_.html
map(value, start1, stop1, start2, stop2)
Table dataSheet;
void setup() { fullScreen();  dataSheet = loadTable("toptendataset.csv","header");  println (dataSheet.getRowCount());  println (dataSheet.getInt(0,4));
 for(int i=0; i<10; i++) {    float value = dataSheet.getInt(i,2);    float m = map(value, 85, 3263 , 30, width-30);    ellipse(m, 200, 10, 10);    ellipse((dataSheet.getInt(i,2)/3)+140, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));
 }
}
Tumblr media
Inserting the m value into the ellipses line of code I did this first just to assess if I had copied the code correctly.
Tumblr media
I then applied it to the data ellipse themselves and it worked well which is why in the next image I just adjusted the starting point of the new range so all of the circles were visible.
Tumblr media
Table dataSheet;
void setup() { fullScreen();  dataSheet = loadTable("toptendataset.csv","header");  println (dataSheet.getRowCount());  println (dataSheet.getInt(0,4));
 for(int i=0; i<10; i++) {    float value = dataSheet.getInt(i,2);    float m = map(value, 85, 3263 , 150, width-30);    //ellipse(m, 200, 10, 10);    //ellipse((dataSheet.getInt(i,2)/3)+140, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));  ellipse(m, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));
 }
}
void draw() { }
Tumblr media
The transition from the image above to the image below was the change in the range that I chose to
Tumblr media
Decided to add random colouring mainly for the purpose of myself being able to differentiate between the circles.
Tumblr media
Table dataSheet;
void setup() { fullScreen();  dataSheet = loadTable("toptendataset.csv","header");  println (dataSheet.getRowCount());  println (dataSheet.getInt(0,4));
 for(int i=0; i<10; i++) {    float value1 = dataSheet.getInt(i,2);    float m = map(value1, 85, 3263 , 170, width-80);    float value2 = dataSheet.getInt(i,4);    float n = map(value2, 14, 792.75 , 100, 800);      //ellipse(m, 200, 10, 10);      //ellipse(n, 200, 10, 10);    //ellipse((dataSheet.getInt(i,2)/3)+140, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));    //ellipse(m, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));  fill(100,200,random(255));  ellipse(m, height/2,  n, n);
 }
}
void draw() { }
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Any other options of data sets...
I feel as though my design is too simple so I am going to try and incorporate another data set or attempt to do something else with my current data set.
I have found some population statistics over the past 10 years in Syria and I think I am going to try and incorporate that into my code. The
Tumblr media
I have become keen on the idea of using rectangles within my design.
Tumblr media
Table dataSheet;
void setup() { fullScreen();  dataSheet = loadTable("toptendataset.csv","header");  println (dataSheet.getRowCount());  println (dataSheet.getInt(0,4));
 for(int i=0; i<10; i++) {    float value1 = dataSheet.getInt(i,2);    float m = map(value1, 85, 3263 , 170, width-80);    float value2 = dataSheet.getInt(i,4);    float n = map(value2, 14, 792.75 , 100, 800);
     //ellipse(m, 200, 10, 10);      //ellipse(n, 200, 10, 10);    //ellipse((dataSheet.getInt(i,2)/3)+140, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));    //ellipse(m, height/2,  dataSheet.getInt(i,4), dataSheet.getInt(i,4));  fill(100,200,random(255),50);  ellipse(m, height/2,  n, n);  rect((width/2)-dataSheet.getInt(i,5)*5,(height/2)-dataSheet.getInt(i,5)*5,dataSheet.getInt(i,5)*10,dataSheet.getInt(i,5)*10);
 }
}
void draw() { }
After I did some research into the issue I have decided to focus on creating a patch to display my data this way it can be fixed to a backpack, t-shirt, blanket etc.
So I needed to find a way to present it that would. be effective as a badge and a more aesthetic way of displaying the data.
Back to the drawing board...
My attempts at trying to find an idea that would work using both the ellipses and rectangles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Out of the designs that I had I became very fond of the last 3rd one as I feel it would provide an aesthetic patch whilst also displaying the data.
Tumblr media
What this means for the code...
This means that I will need to isolate the turkey statistic, without removing it from the distance data.
It will also mean placing the rectangles in the centre of the circle and potentially using the
Intro to Digital Embroidery...
So I then went to the embroidery induction on 30th September, where we learnt how to use the digital embroidery machine using the inputs created from processing.
Tumblr media
import processing.embroider.*; PEmbroiderGraphics E;
void setup() { size (600,600); E = new PEmbroiderGraphics(this, width, height);
String outputFilePath = sketchPath("PEmbroider_test.dst"); E.setPath(outputFilePath);
E.beginDraw();
E.stroke(0,0,0); E.strokeWeight(10); E.strokeSpacing(2);
E.fill(0,0,0); E.hatchMode(E.SATIN); E.rect(100,100,300,300);
E.textSize(2); E.textAlign(CENTER); E.textFont(PEmbroiderFont.DUPLEX); E.text("PEmbroider",250,250);
E.optimize(); E.endDraw();
E.visualize();
}
void draw() {
}
To make the file an embroidery file you basically need to add E. before each line that you want to apply to the embroidery. The code must always start with import processing.embroider.*; followed by PEmbroiderGraphics E; this is all defining that it is an embroidery document so processing can register it.

Week 11 Lecture
What’s next for Communication Design?
During this lecture session, Andy and Karen discussed about the future of communication design. Many examples were included in the discussion, such as creative technology which can be beneficial for society. They discussed about parametric design and also the idea of working with data to change design. Karen and Andy also shared the machines which they had make, Live Draw, Trumpet of the Swan and Library of Nonhuman books, which are inventive.
[Thoughts] I understand that design has been more digital-based nowadays and parametric design does help to give accuracy into a design. It is very exciting to see new innovative inventions being created in this modern society, with the benefit of advancing technology and artificial intelligence. However, I have quite a fear that AI can replace designers in the future since they may be considered to be more efficient and precise. Hopefully technology and new design systems will benefit designers, rather than replacing them, to create other-worldly creations.
Parametric Design
Tumblr media
Parametric design adds dimensions and any other specific information needed for functionality and manufacturability. It supplies all the dimensions, tolerances, and detailed materials information critical to the design consistent. Parametric design lets you specify the key parameters of the project and make changes interactively, with the model updating automatically.

Digital design and time on device; why aesthetic experience helps us to understand the psychological impact of living in a digital culture - by Vanessa Bartlett
Tumblr media
Stop the Algorithm (2017) Kneissl, S, Lackner, M. The Photographer’s Gallery.
In his customer engagement manual Hooked: How to build habit-forming products, behaviourist Nir Eyal describes the various triggers that interface designers deploy to render online environments more habit-forming. Icons placed on mobile home screens highlight unanswered messages and act as a constant reminder of digital loops awaiting closure. Red circles in the top left-hand corner of each icon count outstanding actions still to be taken—producing a subtle but continuous psychological itch. Meanwhile, social networking sites embed themselves at the centre of a user’s emotional life. Eyal suggests that Instagram exploits the quiet anxiety that occurs when users fear a special moment will be lost forever. This need to document and preserve is supported within the app by filters and visual icons that make the poorest quality images more attractive. Eyal suggests that ‘users who find a product that alleviates their pain will form strong, positive associations with the product over time
 these bonds cement into a habit as users turn to your product when experiencing certain internal triggers’ [1]. Similar tendencies have also been observed by anthropologist Natasha Dow-SchĂŒll in her studies of digitally enhanced machine gambling interfaces, where designers work with colour, light, animation, sound and space to create experiences that yield maximum gambling revenue by keeping players on device for as long as possible. SchĂŒll describes the intention of one machine gambling company to create interfaces that function as a ‘personal theatre’ describing habit forming technology using aesthetic referents [2].
In a consumer driven society, digital engagements are constructed with sensory stimulation and consequential increases in ‘time on device’ at the core of their design. The psychological impact of prolonged screen-time divides psychologists and clinical researchers [3], as does the validity of emerging diagnostic terminology such as ‘internet addiction’ [4]. Rather than rehearsing the two sides of this argument again here, this short essay is concerned with probing the often overlooked role of aesthetics in the creation of digital habits, and, with the potential of art to illuminate the psychological, social and sensory dimensions of habit-forming digital technologies. My application of the term aesthetic is prompted in part by its deployment in user experience design, where it describes how visual pleasure can entice a user to engage with a digital interface for longer [5]. More importantly, I also want to think through digital aesthetics as a ‘sensory knowing of the world’ [6] that can shape experience in such a way that it generates reflection on the role of the digital in everyday life. This approach mirrors investigations by art theorists such as Anna Munster, who has argued that contemporary artistic practices present one of the most powerful ways to come to grips with networked culture [6]. Using case study artworks by YoHa and Steve Lambert among others, she argues that art can create ‘alternative social-political spaces in which knowledge can be generated collectively rather than merely (re)discovered and accumulated proprietarily’ [6]. In other words, aesthetic experience can prompt reflection on digital interfaces in a way that is critically and socially motivated. Crucially, Munster also shows how digital experiences involve affect, ‘moving dynamic qualities of experience’ that are different to pure emotion. Borrowing from psychologist Daniel Stern, she uses the term ‘vitality affects’ to describe a circulation of feeling that takes place within the tempo of daily living; ‘as we breath, fall asleep
wake up’ and engage in digital networks [6]. This subtle, continuous movement of affect can perhaps be thought of in relation to the barely perceptible discomforts that Eyal uses as motivators for action in his book. The feelings that Eyal’s design aesthetics seek to harvest are ‘below the perceptibility of consciousness’ and constitute ‘tiny stressors’ that manipulate without attracting too greater portion of our conscious attention; ‘feelings of boredom, loneliness, frustration, confusion and indecisiveness often instigate a slight pain or irritation and prompt an almost instantaneous and often mindless action to quell the negative sensation’ [1]. This digital affect becomes an ordinary part of our daily experience.
In a cultural moment where interface design toys with and drives latent emotions and affects, I argue that artists, designers and other aesthetic activists should be part of any effort that seeks to understand the psychological impacts of living in a digital culture. This is not to suggest that digital art and interface design should be considered as the same thing or that digital artists might be directly employed to re-design user interfaces. What I would like to suggest is that aesthetic experience produces opportunities for questioning and working through the ethical, experiential and psychological consequences of living in a digital world where emotions are cultivated for profit. From inside aesthetic encounters we can begin to fully comprehend the emotional complexity at work in the interplay between visual and sensory stimulus, affect and digital devices.
Artists’ responses to practices of digital manipulation can be observed in several recent exhibitions and artworks that have made links between affect, digital culture and interface design. The exhibition and research project Are We All Addicts Now? led by Katriona Beales was the first to explore and critique behavioural design devices such as those advocated by Eyal. Beales reflects her own experiences of internet use as being ‘trance-like’ and ‘seductive,’ producing sculptures and installations that recreate these ambiguous psychological states for the viewer. In the exhibition Hooked: When Want Becomes Need curated by Hannah Redler-Hawes for Science Gallery London, works by Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Benjamin Grosser, Katriona Beales and Yole Quintero all worked with the slow creeping discomforts produced by contemporary interface design. Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Benjamin Grosser’s work Please Don’t Like This (2015) is a starkly designed web page with a throbbing red ‘like’ button at its centre. ‘LIKE THIS!’ the heading cajoles, while a ‘hit counter’ keeps track of the number of people who have already succumbed. Certainly, the work does not invite the viewer into a transformative, high emotion experience in the sense that we might associate with traditional aesthetic theories devised by Kant, for example. Instead, what is produced in the viewer is a much more mundane oscillation between temptation and indifference, an affect that niggles under the skin just enough for the viewer to act to reduce the discomfort before moving on to scratch the next psychological itch. Please Don’t Like This reflects the particular aesthetic work often associated with artists in a ‘post-digital’ moment; it draws attention to the visual tropes and affective indifferences of late capitalism with the intent of critiquing them. For curator Christiane Paul, a post-digital aesthetic is about highlighting ‘the embeddedness of the digital in the objects, images and structures we encounter on a daily basis and the way we understand ourselves in relation to them’ [7]. In encounters with this work, the viewer can perhaps sense more acutely the emotional mechanisms at play in day-to-day digital experience, as art becomes a device for drawing attention to digital affects that often remain hidden from awareness.
A more directly activist strategy is proposed by Stephanie Kneissl and Max Lackner’s artwork Stop the Algorithm (2017), which was recently exhibited as part of All I Know is What’s on the Internet curated by Katrina Sluis for The Photographer’s Gallery. The work is a response to the way that algorithms shape how people engage with information online. Data calculations made behind the scenes of social platforms increasingly determine what will be visible in user timelines. Multiple likes, comments and shares push ‘positive’ content to the top of a feed, while non sensationalist or critical content can disappear if it does not receive a flurry of interactions within the first ten minutes of posting. Taina Bucher has suggested this mechanism compels users who post regularly to obsessively ‘attend to their profiles in the hopes of not being ignored’ [8], creating anxiety that encourages habitual behaviour. Kneissl and Lackner’s work comprises of delicately crafted kinetic sculptures that scroll through Instagram, liking content at random and subverting the workings of that algorithm. The work highlights ‘infinite scroll,’ one of the techniques identified by Eyal as ‘interaction design’s answer to our penchant for endlessly searching for novelty’ [9]. Instagram’s feed is designed so that users scan information without ever reaching an ‘end’. As Kneissl and Lackner’s machines constantly push through content using this ‘infinite scroll’ facility, the viewer might reflect on ways that the design of online space facilitates a bottomless and futile quest to numb anxious affects.
As aesthetic forms continue to shape affective engagements with interfaces in the ways that I have demonstrated above, I argue that the role of aesthetic and arts-based knowledge will become increasingly important for understanding the psychological impact of living in a digital culture. My claim is motivated in part by a feeling that established clinical and sociological approaches continue to fall short in accounting for the cultural, technological and design mechanisms that shape contemporary psychological distress. While art is not a panacea, presented in ways that encourage broad engagement and reflection, it may help to foster increasing understanding of capitalism’s use of design and aesthetics to influence how we work, shop and build relationships in increasingly pervasive digital spaces.
This text documents thoughts in progress from a new book project by Vanessa Bartlett. The ideas contained within it grow out of the artist led research project Are We All Addicts Now? in collaboration with Katriona Beales, Fiona MacDonald and Henrietta Bowden-Jones.

Module 5 - Final Report
Introduction This research report will analyze the social media strategy of the non-profit organization Chai Lifeline. This organization is devoted to helping families who support a child with a deadly disease. Chai Lifeline relies on volunteers to deliver their message, especially when it comes to their social media platforms.
Currently, they have a website which has links to their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn. The audience Chai Lifeline targets families with children who suffer from a life-threatning or chronic illness from across Canada.
Thesis To exponentially improve their Chai Lifeline’s presence, they need to narrow their focus to deliver a quality strategy.
Initial Observations
Tumblr media
See exhibit 1 for full notes on strengths and weaknesses
Literature Review and Main Themes
Positive Themes
1.     Engagement – is viewed as one of the overarching themes that provided their social media presence legitimacy. On Chai Lifeline’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, they post on a regular basis that provide their followers a sense of connection and expectation. Too many posts in a day and followers become annoyed, and too little loses follower’s attention.
2.     Informative Content – Chai Lifeline delivers meaningful and actionable content to its followers. The right content can translate into a donation from a first-time website visitor.[i] It can convince someone who is on the edge of volunteering to join.
3.     Visuals – What draws more clicks to any social media page is having the right images and info graphics. Graphics can summarize a paragraphs worth of content without distracting readers.[ii] This allows people to pick and choose what information they want to read.
Tumblr media
Improvement Themes
1.     Quality Over Quantity – Chai Lifeline is running too many social media platforms. In their situation, it is hurting them because if someone were to venture on these pages, they would see that they are not up to date, and this would reflect poorly on the organization as a whole.[iii]
2.     Color Scheme and Profile Identity - Chai Lifeline currently has a different profile picture and color scheme across all platforms. A strong aesthetic shows attention to detail which adds to the legitimacy of the organization.[iv] Coca-Cola is a solid brand to try replicate when it comes to social media consistency and branding.[v]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.     Organization – This theme pertains to the organization of content on Chai Lifeline’s website. See exhibit 5 for a screenshot of their landing page. Specifically, the third screenshot is two disjointed blocks of text with abrasive color in-between a picture.
Tumblr media
Methodology
Research focused on the how people reacted to the user experience of the different platforms. 10 random individuals at Queen’s University and a group member interviewed subjects from India were chosen to review each of the platforms and were asked questions on their initial observations. Questions were based on the positive and improvement themes found in the investigation to confirm or reject our beliefs before diving further into the research and why people were having these reactions.
Tumblr media
Results
The results from our questionnaire have shown us that participants believe Chai Lifeline is consistent with their posting and the platforms are informative. Results indicate that the color scheme is disjointed and distracting on the website, as well as information is scattered and hard to follow. In addition, results show that participants do not believe a LinkedIn page is helping the organization in any meaningful way.
Domestic and International Results
Question 1: 8/10 participants answered a ‘4’ which indicate that posting on platforms are very consistent.
Question 2: 8/10 participants answered ‘4’ that they found the platforms very informative.
Question 3: 7/10 participants answered a ‘2’ level. This indicates they visit a platform between 2-3 times a week.
Question 4: 7/10 participants answered they enjoyed the media aspects on the platforms. Examples given were videos and pictures.
Question 5:  7/10 participants answered they did not understand the relevance of a LinkedIn page and its connection to Chai Lifeline.
Question 6: 8/10 participants answered the colour scheme in some way distracted them from the main point of the website.
Question 7: 9/10 participants mentioned in their answer they found the platforms very – somewhat informative. 6/10 participants stated in their answer they found the website disorganized.
It was evident after collecting the answers from the questionnaire that the answers aligned with our initial research. We have highlighted the questions worth analyzing:
Question 1: 11/12 participants answered a ‘4’ which indicate that posting on platforms are very consistent.
Question 2: 12/12 participants answered ‘4’ that they found the platforms very informative.
Question 3: 8/12 participants answered a ‘2’ level. This indicates they visit a platform between 2-3 times a week.
Question 4: 12/12 participants answered they enjoyed the media aspects on the platforms. Examples given were videos and pictures.
Question 5:  12/12 participants answered they did not understand the relevance of a LinkedIn page and its connection to Chai Lifeline.
Question 6: 9/12 participants answered the colour scheme in some way distracted them from the main point of the website.
Question 7: 8/12 participants mentioned in their answer they found the platforms very – somewhat informative. 11/12 participants stated in their answer they found the website disorganized.
Discussion
Since the survey confirmed our hypothesis, we wanted to understand the psychological reasons and how fixing these elements could improve their presence. To create a better social media presence we realized we have these questions left to answer for Chai Lifeline:
What purposes to LinkedIn and Pinterest serve?
What color scheme best suits their brand?
How could they layout their website more effectively?
Analysis
1. LinkedIn Purpose: A LinkedIn page helps members find your business, your brand, and job opportunities within your company. Company pages are also useful to legitimize the brand.
-       As a non-profit organization, a LinkedIn profile is not necessary. It is more of a professional networking site that people use to find jobs.
Pinterest Purpose: Pinterest is a platform that allows people to find inspiration and ideas for their interests and hobbies.
-       A Pinterest profile for a non-profit does not add that much value. It can help increase engagement but not crucial to an organization
2. Results showed that the colour scheme is disjointed and distracting. “Your     choice of website colours is the most important decision you will make in     designing and building your website, apart from your words and content of     course” [vi].There are psychological meanings of choices of colour, as well as     different cultures interpret colour in various ways. It is crucial to keep this in mind as different colours appeal to different markets.
Their current color palette
Tumblr media
3. Results demonstrate that the information on the website is scattered and difficult to follow. It is important to remember that a website should be audience focused, concise, intuitive, interconnected and accessible.[vii] A website should be easy to understand, aesthetically pleasing and captivating. Landing pages are meant to let you hold your prospective volunteers or sponsors. They are your lead generation vehicle that acts as a digital salesman. Internet browsers land on a page from an ad, search result, social media post, or video.
Recommendations
1.     Eliminate LinkedIn and Pinterest - This will allow their volunteers to have more time to focus on the platforms that matter such as the Website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.[viii]
 2.     Narrow the Color Scheme - This will allow audience members to understand Chai Lifeline’s message clearly and draw a connection to the organization.[ix] It recommended to use green as it represents balance, and grey is simple.[x]
Suggested Color Scheme:
Tumblr media
3.     Improve the Website’s Home Page - Chai Lifeline must eliminate some information on their main page, however, eventually it will reduce clutter and direct the audience to the main goal.[xi] This can be accomplished by keeping the web page concise and making sure the paragraphs are short. As well, make sure the website is audience focused and that the website is answering the audiences’ questions and needs.[xii]
 Conclusion
In conclusion, our results have highlighted and supported our initial research. We believe that Chai Lifeline has enormous potential to take their social media presence to a new level. If they implement these simple recommendations, we believe they will increase engagement and awareness.
