Hey! Did you do/could you give some information about the education system in Japan? I need tips about it for a story I’m writing!
And if it’d help any it’s for a 13yr old and her inseparable 10yr old sister, and since they can’t be separated without them never being able to learn, it’s hard to find out how they’d handle schooling in Japan (their home). And they lack a rather large amount of modern knowledge, making it harder for the two to be placed in a school (they’re resurrected children from Japans Asuka period.
Writing Notes: Japanese Education System
School Education Chart
Tumblr media
OVERVIEW. The Japanese school system primarily consists of:
6-year elementary schools,
3-year junior high schools and
3-year high schools,
followed by a 2-or-3-year junior college or
a 4-year college.
Compulsory education lasts for 9 years through elementary and junior high school.
School exchanges during Japan Educational Travel are mainly implemented in junior high and high schools.
For physically or mentally challenged students, there is a system called “Special Needs Education” to support special students to develop their self-reliance and thus enhance their social participation.
PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION in Japan is the starting point for many children on their educational journey. It includes:
Kindergartens (幼稚園 Yochien): These schools cater to children aged 3 to 6 and focus on play-based learning, socialization, and preparing children for elementary school.
Day Care Centers (保育所 Hoikusho): These facilities provide care for children from infancy to age 5. They focus on nurturing the child’s development in a safe and caring environment.
Centers for Early Childhood Education and Care (認定こども園 Nintei-Kodomo-en): These centers combine the functions of kindergartens and day care centers, offering flexible options for parents who need child care and educational services.
COMPULSORY EDUCATION. In Japan, compulsory education spans 9 years, covering elementary and lower secondary education:
Elementary Schools (小学校 Shogakko): Elementary education begins at age 6 and lasts for six years. The curriculum includes a broad range of subjects, including Japanese language, mathematics, science, social studies, and physical education.
Lower Secondary Schools (中学校 Chugakko): After completing elementary school, students move on to 3 years of lower secondary education. The focus here is on a more specialized curriculum, with subjects such as English, technology, and moral education added to the mix.
Compulsory education in Japan is provided free of charge at national and public schools, ensuring that all children have access to a basic education. While foreign students are not required to participate in Japan’s compulsory education, they can enroll in public schools if their address is registered with the local administrative office.
UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION and beyond. Although high school (upper secondary education) is not compulsory in Japan, approximately 98% of students choose to continue their education. Upper secondary education includes various options:
Upper Secondary Schools (高等学校 Kotogakko): These schools provide 3 years of education after lower secondary school. Students can choose between academic courses, which prepare them for university, and vocational courses, which focus on practical skills for entering the workforce.
Part-Time Courses (定時制 Teiji-Sei) and Correspondence Courses (通信制 Tsushin-Sei): These options are available for students who need more flexibility due to work, personal circumstances, or other commitments.
Upper Secondary Courses of Specialized Training Colleges (高等専修学校 Koto-Senshu-Gakko): These institutions offer specialized training in fields such as technology, business, and the arts.
TYPES OF SCHOOLS. Japan offers a variety of school types to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of students and parents:
Public Local Schools
Tuition: Generally cheaper than private schools.
Administration: Managed by local districts, meaning students must attend the school within their residential district.
Language of Instruction: All classes are taught in Japanese.
Availability: From kindergarten to university (national).
Private Schools
Tuition: Approximately 5-7 times more expensive than public schools.
School Choice: Students can attend schools outside their district, depending on their preferences.
Entrance Requirements: Students must pass an entrance exam to enroll.
Language of Instruction: Some classes may be taught in English.
Availability: From kindergarten to university (national).
International Schools
Target Audience: Primarily cater to foreign students, expatriates’ children, or bicultural students.
Tuition: Significantly more expensive than private schools.
Language of Instruction: All classes are taught in English or another selected foreign language if officially recognized.
Availability: From kindergarten to high school.
Accreditation: Includes International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge A Level programs.
CURRENTLY, Japan’s primary school curriculum is divided into 3 main categories:
compulsory subjects,
moral education, and
special activities.
Compulsory subjects - are Japanese language, Japanese literature, mathematics, social studies, science, music, arts and handicrafts, and physical education. English is currently required in fifth and sixth grade, but it is taught through informal activities rather than as a graded subject.
Moral education - intended to teach students to respect one another and the environment, to respect the rules of society, and to learn general self-control.
Special activities - refer to activities and ceremonies that emphasize teamwork and cooperation such as graduations, field trips or school concerts.
Japan added computer programming as a compulsory subject in primary school in 2020.
The compulsory subjects are continued in lower secondary school, with the addition of fine arts, foreign languages (English, French, German, etc.), and a greater array of electives.
Programming was added to the lower secondary curriculum in 2012.
The upper secondary curriculum continues compulsory subjects but also includes science inquiry and social science inquiry courses.
Computer programming will be added to the upper secondary curriculum in 2022.
In addition to these compulsory subjects, Japanese schools provide “food and nutrition education” as part of their school lunch programs, known as shokuiku.
All students eat a school-provided lunch together in their classrooms, which they also prepare and serve.
Teachers discuss nutrition and healthy eating with students as part of preparation for the meal.
The Japanese believe schools should teach not only academic skills but good character traits as well.
While a small amount of hours every year is devoted to moral education in the national curriculum, there is substantial anecdotal evidence that teachers do not take the instructional time too seriously and often use it for other purposes.
Still, Japanese teachers endeavor to inculcate good character traits in students through the hidden curriculum. For example, all Japanese students and teachers clean school buildings every week.
Japanese students are constantly exhorted by teachers to practice widely admired societal traits such as putting forth intense effort on any task and responding to greetings from teachers in a lively manner.

assigning marvel heroes engineering majors (1)
i tried to write this so it makes sense even if you don't know much about engineering!! this post has my headcanons for peter parker, steve rogers, tony stark, and clint barton!!
as a preface, i am very aware that most of the marvel heroes would not in fact be in school for engineering even in an alternate universe. unfortunately, my fixation on both superheroes and engineering knows no bounds.
please feel free to ask me any questions about eng or for further explanation my reasons for these picks!! i am only in one type of eng but know many people in other disciplines so hopefully i'll be able to answer :)))
Peter Parker - Mechanical & Biomedical
I truly, truly believe the correct peter parker engineering take depends on what portrayal of spiderman you are looking at. like tobey's spiderman? would not touch biomed with a pole let alone mech. ... that peter parker is so far from engineer...... i dont even know where i would put him. materials? pls send your opinions if you have them.
BUT MCU, tom holland, spiderman would definitely definitely be in mechanical & biomedical. i actually got this from an irl friend, so if you see this somehow pls say hi LMAO
mechanical is one of the most common streams of eng and, while absolutely not something i ever want to touch, is really neat. it centers around keeping things in motion (contrary to civil engineering where if something is moving you're in trouble). it applies physics in really cool ways which i imagine would be a draw to peter just on the sole basis of personal interest. mech also plays with materials as it explores elasticity, deformation, fractures, yield strength, and other materials things i have blocked out LOL. when i think of that aspect i feel like it matches really well with the designed suit, the webs, and, if you listen to the science jargon he throws around in the movies, some of his prior knowledge.
biomedical engineering is actually used by some (the insane) as a gateway into med school. it covers human anatomy and genetic engineering (radioactive spider????). i do not believe peter would do med school too (because that student debt tho) but i also can't imagine him not trying to apply what he learns to helping others. i am personally partial to applying engineering principles to physiology and i can just imagine him implementing his mechanical knowledge into making prosthetics. if i had the brain power for this degree i would love to do that.
Steve Rogers - Civil Engineering
.... listen. steve rogers would fight a war before sitting in an hour lecture about dirt. i know this and acknowledge this wholeheartedly. HOWEVER,,,, I have a friend in civil with a special interest on sustainable design and you cannot, cannot tell me that isn't steven rogers coded.
civil engineering is not architecture, like at all, which i think is a common misconception if you don't know engineering well ( totally understandable!) unfortunately, i don't think civil caters to his artistic side that well but as someone who likes art but only does it as a hobby next to eng, i think thats okay.
civil engineering is kind of the mother to environmental engineering in the sense that they both look into wastewater treatments, geology, and even environmental planning (in some cases) but civil will also go into more detail with structural components and design of buildings. you'll find civil engineers involved in every building being made and in every town council ensuring clean drinking water and working sewage systems. typically they specialize into one or the other but shhhh ignore that for this post.
what i am trying to say here is that this would give steve a shit ton of wiggle room which i think he would use to help both the environment and people. paying engineers is expensiveeee especially for qualified, capable ones. i think steve would find deep satisfaction in working either for free or for the bare minimum cost (not that you should - know your worth :) ) and i think that he would actively use his work to call out designs that endanger communities or their environments.
this man knows his local engineering ethics code and WILL call someone out.
Tony Stark - Engineering Physics
when i started writing this section i thought it was going to be the easiest but unfortunately i did in fact have to phone a friend. tony stark is THE engineer so narrowing him down to one discipline felt impossible. my friend suggested engineering physics so i went with that.
the thing is eng phys is THE engineering degree. it is wonderful because you look at almost every thing mech, elec, and comp related (will explain more below) without specializing too greatly. it is also difficult because you don't specialize. for tony stark, who did not have to go into that internship grindset mentality, it would all be net positives.
to make the suit i immediately knew tony needed to have an extremely good knowledge on BOTH electrical (circuitry, coding, wires, magnetism, fun stuff) and mechanical (explained in peter's section!!). i was considering a double major but then was stumped because i love my elec and mech friends but they have no desire to produce a new element and also... creating an arc reactor??? plus AI's??? while likely related to software, it he would have bare minimum had to have had a good computer engineering (kind of how it sounds, engineering related to building and using computers and components of computers, lots of overlap w/ elec) background.
to wield the amount of science knowledge tony stark has an be able to apply it in an engineering context he would either have to be a genius (which like canonically he is so yknow) or take every course offered to engphys students (and some).
i think as a student he would have also enjoyed that not having to specify aspect. i imagine him always in the pursuit of knowledge. yay eng physics!!!
Clint Barton - Materials Engineering
If you've read the reasonings for some of the characters above you have likely thought to yourself "wow, such clear arguments, time must have been put into this" which like yes but also no because for this decision i am going exclusively on vibes.
materials focuses on, well, materials. it looks at both composition and properties (plus how composition effects properties). my friends in matls tell me its pretty research heavy which doesn't really fit with clint, i am aware. but every person i have met from this faculty i am convinced would get along with him.
I KNOW THIS ISN'T GREAT REASONING. i think that engineering would always be second to other things or interests in his life (even when he's a student) but I think the promise of a stable job and the hypothetical applications are really interesting. matls and mech can be surprisingly similar and i think he would find more satisfaction in manipulating materials to better fit his goals than in being stuck within predefined constraints.
plus, imagine creating a new material for like the tensile strength of your bow. incredibly cool
I'm thinking i'll work on doing more of these as i find the time!! i definitely have a few ideas for other characters, i just need to figure out how to articulate my reasonings haha.
if you have any ideas or shared interest in engineering and superheroes please let me know!! i have also been recently into the bat family, as you could probably tell by my reblogs, and am thinking of doing a version with them also!!

The new school year is bringing fresh protections for Jewish students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, following the administration’s announcement on Tuesday that its nondiscrimination policy will now extend to harassment or discrimination based on Jewish students’ connections to Israel and Zionism.
The guidelines are part of a new agreement with Hillel International, Illini Hillel and the Jewish United Fund, Chicago’s federation, and it comes as several elite universities have received criticism for a lack of transparency about specific messaging as to what university policies are and how they are going to be enforced.
Under the agreement, announced on Tuesday, the University of Illinois declared that the protections offered by the university’s nondiscrimination policy extend to harassment or discrimination of Jewish students, including harassment or discrimination based on Jewish students’ connections to Israel and Zionism.
UIUC published a set of examples, for the first time, of discrimination and harassment of protected classes as part of its nondiscrimination policy.
The examples include the use of antisemitic slurs and stereotypes, blaming a Jewish student for Israel’s policies, physical contact with an individual and derogatory or hostile messages on social media.
In 2020, the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and the law firm of Arnold & Porter filed a Title VI complaint on behalf of University of Illinois Jewish students who alleged antisemitism on campus. Also on Tuesday, a resolution agreement issued by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) was reached.
Catherine Lhamon, assistant secretary for civil rights at the Department of Education, said that UIUC “has now agreed to take the steps necessary to ensure its education community can learn, teach, and work without an unredressed antisemitic hostile environment, or any other hostility related to stereotypes about shared ancestry.”
Lonnie Nasatir, president of JUF, told Jewish Insider that “the terms in this settlement are the best achieved across the country and will have a significant positive impact on the campus climate for Jewish students.”
Additionally, the university agreed to publish a summary report of bias incidents every month, commit to mandatory antisemitism training for administrators and students and hire an expert on campus antisemitism to enhance the university policies.
The agreement does not include implementation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism, a definition that mainstream Jewish groups and congressional leaders have called for universities to adopt as schools confront antisemitism on campus. .
In a statement, Robert Jones, UIUC’s chancellor, said that the university is “deeply committed to implementing the Mutual Understandings we are announcing today and to working together to provide a safe and supportive educational environment for our entire Jewish student community and for all students at Illinois.”
Erez Cohen, executive director at Illini Hillel, said in a separate statement that Hillel will “work alongside UIUC during the implementation of their new policies and to help reaffirm their promise to protect the rights of Jewish students on campus.”
While antisemitism on campuses has skyrocketed since the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks and the subsequent war in Gaza, the university’s agreement with Jewish groups had already been in discussion for several years. An OCR investigation from 2015 through December 2023 found 135 allegations of anti-Jewish discrimination (compared to four related to anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian or anti-Arab discrimination). Incidents in the OCR investigation include flyers distributed around campus via plastic bags containing rocks stating, “Every single aspect of the Covid agenda is Jewish” and a student throwing a rock toward an event at the Hillel Center.
Brandeis Center President Alyza Lewin said in a statement that “UIUC’s administration began engaging in meaningful discussions with the Jewish community about how to address antisemitism on campus after we filed our OCR complaint years ago.”
Lewin called the agreement “a significant milestone,” adding that it will “when implemented, improve the campus climate for Jewish students

The Last and Final Blog
Over my past 4 years here at the University of Guelph, the environment has been at the center of my focus. Immersed in this for 1460 days has truly shaped me into who I am as a person and defined what my ethics and values are. For every job I applied to, the question I always got asked was, Why is this something you want to pursue? My answer is always the same; By being a student who is immersed in this knowledge and knows the complexities of the environment down the molecular level, I feel that it is my moral duty to relay this information and educate others. As an interpreter, my personal ethics encourages me to help educate people on ways they can learn about their impacts and how to help. It is important to look back on the daily decisions you make to see how you are either contributing or helping the environment. Some situations can be exempted. For example, they say you should buy electric cars, however, CTV News reported that the average price for an EV vehicle has reached 73,000$ (Bickis, 2023). When the price of a car is this high, you cannot blame individuals for using their gas cars to get to work so they can put food on the table for their families. Understanding that not everyone is as privileged to live a fully eco life is one step closer to stopping the blame and a step in the right direction for education on how you can become environmentally friendly with your living status. Being taught about the imbalances in the environment as a result of human disturbances and the effects they can have is very scary. Constant exposure to this kind of content every day can seriously impact your thoughts and beliefs about life and the world. In my case, it became very motivating. It drives me to want to help educate others and contribute to organizations that are focusing on the preservation and conservation of our earth.
This course has been a very pivotal experience for me. Although I love taking courses about the environment which includes biology and chemistry, this course forced me to look beyond just these numbers and the analytical lens. It forced me to think more intuitively regarding interpretation and environmental science. Understanding the needs of our earth and how much we impact it starts with admitting to yourself that there is a problem whether created by you or someone else, and that it needs to be addressed. Today, there has been lots of greenwashing which tends to turn people away from wanting to advocate for the Earth. There is such a divide between the general public knowledge and students/scientists. I can't tell you how many people have said to me “Oh, so you want to save the Turtles” when I told them I was in environmental science. This statement right here goes to show the lack of understanding between preservation and protecting the planet. Environmental science falls under a huge umbrella. It encompasses so much that goes beyond just implementing reusable or compostable straws.
When I have conversations with people who are out of touch with reality, I feel nothing but sad for them. That they are not as fortunate to know what I know or that their motivations might be driven by something else. But I cannot blame them, knowledge is power but it's also money. I believe it is my right as someone who holds this kind of knowledge, to help people understand and become engaged and involved with the environment. However, I do also believe as people of this earth, it affects us all, and doesn't matter what your social status, race, gender, etc. is, it is something we should all be working towards understanding. Let's just put it this way, a hurricane doesn't care if you're a billionaire with a nice house. Beck et al. (2018) state that there are immense educational benefits associated with acquiring knowledge that can result in “an enjoyable and enriching experience” encouraging a more meaningful relationship with the topic of interest. It doesn’t matter who you are, you will be affected directly or indirectly and therefore I believe we all have an innate calling to preserve and protect the earth not only for us but for the generations to come.
Nature has been a huge component of my life whether it was in the classroom or my own personal outlet. I was taught from a very young age to appreciate nature in all its glory. Over the years I have become increasingly empathetic towards the environment. When I read about things in the news I can’t feel anything but sad. It's so disheartening seeing our earth become hurt and have to constantly rebuild itself. I constantly ask myself when. When will we learn? How long does it take for us to make a change? What brutal disasters need to keep happening for us to stop? Going back to first-year environmental science, we talked about nature having intrinsic value and I couldn’t agree with this statement more. Just like we learned in this course, even if we do not gain any materialistic value from nature and it does not directly or indirectly benefit us, it still has a purpose and is still valuable on its own (Rea & Munns., 2017). Many people are motivated based on economic return and unfortunately, the environment is at the centre of those decisions. The understanding of intrinsic value is based on an ecocentric standpoint which is developed from having a serious concern for the environment, something many people lack (Rea & Munns., 2017). This concern can come from upbringing and experience that shape how one views the world. For people who are struggling to put food on the table, the state of the environment is not typically their biggest problem. Effective interpretation as described by Beck et al., (2018) involves building new knowledge, values, and beliefs. Being open-minded to adopting new concepts can truly work wonders.
Finally, I feel it's my responsibility as an interpreter to educate. Social media is a very powerful tool in today's age and being able to raise awareness about situations regarding climate issues is a great way to expose the general public. I just hope we can create a sense of unity when it comes to caring for our planet and that it gets the attention it deserves because we only have 1, but 1 is enough if we do it right!
Thanks, everyone for a great semester I enjoyed reading all your blogs!

Outcome Based Education
I recently came across an insightful article that delves into the transformative approach of Outcome-Based Education (OBE). This framework shifts the focus from traditional teaching methods to a more results oriented strategy that prioritizes what students are expected to learn and achieve.
Key principles:
Clarity of Outcomes: Establish clear, measurable learning goals for students.
Student-Centered Learning: Focus on engaging students in their own learning processes.
Continuous Assessment: Implement ongoing assessments to monitor progress and provide feedback.
Real-World Application: Connect learning to real-life situations to enhance relevance.
Collaborative Learning: Foster teamwork and collaboration among students and educators.
Implementing OBE can also foster a culture of accountability and collaboration among educators. By aligning teaching strategies with desired outcomes, educators can work together to develop curricula that support student success.
In a world that constantly evolves, it’s crucial for education to adapt and prepare students not just academically, but also for the skills they will need in life. The principles of OBE offer a powerful framework for educators aiming to make a meaningful impact.

Class Groups: Are They the Future of Collaborative Learning?
The traditional classroom setting, with rows of students facing a teacher at the front, has dominated education for centuries. However, the rise of technology and the evolving needs of the 21st century workforce are pushing the boundaries of learning. Enter Class Groups, a concept that reimagines the classroom by leveraging the power of online learning solutions and fostering collaborative learning. But are Class Groups truly the future of education? Let’s delve into the potential benefits and challenges associated with this innovative approach to learning.
Tumblr media
Traditional Classrooms vs. Class Groups: A Shift in Focus
Traditional classrooms emphasize a teacher-centered approach, where the instructor delivers knowledge and students passively absorb it. This model, while effective for foundational learning, can struggle to equip students with the critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills crucial for success in the modern world.
Class Groups, on the other hand, represent a shift towards modern learning. They utilize online learning platforms to deliver core content through engaging video lectures, interactive exercises, and gamified learning experiences. This frees up valuable classroom time (whether physical or virtual) for collaborative activities, discussions, and peer-to-peer learning. Think of it as a two-pronged approach: independent learning facilitated by online platforms and collaborative learning fostered within the Class Group environment.
Benefits of Class Groups for 21st Century Learning
Here’s how Class Groups could revolutionize education and prepare students for the future:
1. Enhanced Collaboration and Communication Skills:
Explain Learning, a website dedicated to promoting effective learning strategies, emphasizes the power of collaboration. In a Class Group setting, students work together on projects, solve problems, and engage in discussions, honing their communication skills and learning to navigate diverse perspectives.
2. Deeper Understanding Through Shared Learning:
The act of explaining a concept to another person strengthens your own understanding. Class Groups create opportunities for students to teach and learn from each other. This reciprocal learning fosters a deeper grasp of the material and encourages critical thinking.
3. Development of Problem-Solving Skills:
Working collaboratively on real-world projects or simulated scenarios within a Class Group allows students to develop creative solutions to complex problems. This prepares them for the collaborative nature of work in the 21st century.
4. Increased Flexibility and Personalized Learning:
Online learning platforms provide students with the flexibility to learn at their own pace, revisit content as needed, and focus on areas requiring additional attention. This personalized learning approach caters to individual learning styles and needs.
5. Global Community and Cultural Exchange:
Online Class Groups can connect students from different countries and backgrounds. This fosters cultural exchange, broadens perspectives, and prepares students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Challenges of Implementing Class Groups
While Class Groups offer exciting possibilities, some challenges need consideration:
1. Digital Divide and Technology Access:
Not all students have equal access to reliable internet and technological devices. This digital divide could create an uneven playing field within a Class Group. Addressing this disparity is crucial for equitable access to this learning format.
2. Effective Group Management:
Facilitating successful Class Groups requires skilled educators who can create engaging learning activities, manage online discussions, and ensure all members actively participate.
3. Fostering a Supportive Online Environment:
Maintaining a respectful and inclusive online environment is critical. Strategies to combat cyberbullying and promote online etiquette within Class Groups need to be established.
The Future of Collaborative Learning: A Hybrid Approach
The idea of Class Groups replacing traditional classrooms entirely might not be the most realistic scenario. However, a hybrid approach that combines the strengths of both could be the ideal solution. Students could utilize online platforms for independent learning and then come together in Class Groups, either physically or virtually, to collaborate, discuss, and apply their knowledge.
Conclusion:
Class Groups offer a promising path towards a more engaging and effective learning experience. By fostering collaboration, personalized learning, and critical thinking skills, they could be a valuable tool in preparing students for the demands of the 21st century. However, ensuring equitable access to technology and equipping educators with the skills to manage online learning environments are crucial considerations.
Ultimately, the future of learning may lie in a well-balanced approach that leverages the strengths of both online learning platforms and collaborative learning experiences within Class Groups. This hybrid model has the potential to empower students to become active participants in their learning journey, fostering a love of knowledge and preparing them to thrive in an ever-evolving world.

SMART Tales: Crafting Global Solutions through Creative Narratives
Blog 1 - February 16, 2024
In the initial exploration of the Technopreneurship 101 course, we engaged with the inaugural video featured on the Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology's Facebook page. The video emphasizes the establishment of a self-learning environment, fostering student engagement through hands-on experiences. In this setting, the instructor facilitates direct interaction with problems, empowering students to make independent decisions and learn through real-world competition dynamics.
Tumblr media
On our first group activity, we were assigned to present ES 302 Game 1, where the team members underwent the 3-12-3 Brainstorm, 5 Why's, and Plus/Delta activities centered on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which target the resolution of pressing global challenges such as poverty and inequality by the year 2030. After exchanging ideas and perspectives, we decided to focus on SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, which mainly focused on the problem "Excessive Plastic Waste Generation: Why Does This Happen?" that is relevant to our community and which we believe is applicable to our program, which is Mechanical Engineering.
Following careful consideration, implementing a comprehensive strategy that includes regulatory measures, consumer education, support for sustainable business practices, circular economy initiatives, and stakeholder collaboration is critical to addressing the root causes of excessive plastic waste and encouraging responsible consumption and production in the local community.

Furthermore, our lecturer suggested that we take the Myers & Briggs Personality Test, an online tool for identifying individual personality types. This test was not simple, but it helped me understand my personality. I was categorized as an INFJ-A. This classification spoke to me strongly since it emphasizes characteristics such as introversion, intuition, feeling, and judgment. Many INFJs believe that their lives have a special purpose—a mission that they were born to complete. For them, one of the most satisfying aspects of life is seeking out this purpose and then attempting to fulfill it.
"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them to become what they are capable of being."-Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Beginning the first week of this course was like walking into a whirlwind, seeking not only a thorough understanding of technopreneurship but also the cultivation of an imaginative mentality to handle community concerns. I am doubly motivated to use my engineering knowledge, although the weight of this undertaking appeared to be like a huge mountain. Still, within the challenges, a thrill and sense of oneness emerged, established through teamwork and the collaboration of our diverse journeys.

At Lynn Community Middle School in Las Cruces, New Mexico, students’ dental needs were met at a school-based clinic. At Brooklyn Center Middle and High School in Minnesota, enrichment classes boosted student engagement. And at Bridges Academy in Oakland, California, a teacher dedicated to culture and climate interventions supported students in meeting their behavioral goals. These examples highlight different promising practices in community schools across the country, but these practices are only one small part of what makes these places community schools.
Community schools are a research-based, comprehensive school transformation strategy in which educators, local community members, families, and students work together to strengthen conditions for student learning and healthy development. As partners, they organize in- and out-of-school resources, supports, and opportunities so that young people are able to thrive. Although community schools have been around for more than a century, modern community schools—designed around whole child structures and practices—have been gaining momentum in recent years, supported by increases in state and federal funding and by the attention community schools received for providing services to and connecting meaningfully with families during the pandemic.
Over the past two years, a national collaboration called Community Schools Forward has highlighted how the community schools strategy aligns with evidence-based practice and research. The collaboration has developed a number of resources to illustrate that alignment, including a framework capturing the essential elements for high-quality community school implementation.
Tumblr media
Source: Community Schools Forward (2023)
This framework was developed in consultation with over 700 practitioners, non-profit leaders, teachers, coordinators, researchers, and policymakers, among others. Importantly, it synthesizes long-standing experience from practitioners; existing models of community schools, including the four evidence-based pillars identified in LPI’s 2017 research review and adopted into policy in places across the country, the National Education Association’s Six Pillars, and the Coalition for Community Schools’ Standards; and recent research on the science of learning and development. The result is an evolved framework which includes six key integrated practices.
The first four of the six key practices grew directly out of the four pillars. Based on the voices and experiences of hundreds of practitioners and latest research on how children learn best, the Community Schools Forward team also added two new practices:
Integrated systems of support: School staff and community partners should systematically coordinate health and social services, academic and nonacademic supports, and enrichment opportunities in a manner that fosters student wellbeing.
Expanded and enriched learning opportunities: Students need access to before- and after-school and summer opportunities in which they can explore their passions, apply academic content beyond the classroom, and build knowledge.
Powerful student and family engagement: Families and students must be active participants in the school community and serve as key partners in decisionmaking and shaping the school’s environment and priorities.
Collaborative leadership and shared power and voice: Families, students, teachers, principals, and community partners should make decisions together through formal and informal structures.
Rigorous, community-connected classroom instruction: The curriculum should connect high-level content and skills to students’ identities, cultures, and experiences, and students should engage in inquiry-based learning that addresses issues they care about in the world around them.
A culture of belonging, safety, and care: Schools ought to be welcoming places that foster caring and trusting relationships. Everyone should be valued for their experiences and encouraged to share their views and take appropriate risks.
There is no doubt these two additional practices are essential for community school success, as illustrated in Oakland Unified School District, where community schools operate systemwide.
For example, community-connected instruction stands out at Oakland International High School, where many students are recent immigrants. The school celebrates the assets and strengths that students bring to school and makes an intentional effort to connect with their varied communities and cultures. During community walks, students lead educators and peers on tours of surrounding neighborhoods; on one such visit, a class had lunch in a halal market, and students from Yemen delivered presentations on their home country, traditions, and history.
At Roosevelt Middle School, also in Oakland, a community school transformation focused on fostering a culture of belonging, safety, and care. When a survey showed that students felt bullied in the cafeteria and unsafe walking to school, school leaders added more adult supervision at lunch and better monitoring of routes to school. They also created an advisory program to give students more say over their school experience and restorative circles for students to safely discuss issues troubling them and learn strategies for solving interpersonal problems. Because emotions and relationships strongly impact learning, these kinds of steps can have a positive effect on a host of student outcomes.
The six key practices are woven together and implemented well when those in community schools cultivate trusting relationships, practice inclusive decisionmaking, and work together toward a shared vision grounded in actionable data. All these essential components of a community school can provide a solid foundation on which great learning environments are built. We hope our ongoing work spurs further growth of transformative community schools where students and families can continue to thrive.

Harnessing the Power of Technology: Implementing Blended Learning through an LMS
The technological revolution has profoundly transformed the landscape of education, bringing the concept of blended learning to the forefront of modern pedagogical strategies. In this regard, Learning Management Systems (LMS) have emerged as a catalyst, bolstering the integration of traditional classroom methods with innovative online learning tools. This article explores how to effectively implement blended learning through an LMS, demystifying the process for educators keen on enhancing their teaching methodologies.
Blended learning, as a pedagogical model, combines face-to-face classroom teaching with online learning and independent study, fostering a more student-centered environment. This approach propels the educational experience beyond the confines of the classroom, providing students with the autonomy to learn at their own pace while ensuring that the teacher remains a critical influencer in the learning trajectory.
However, the successful implementation of blended learning hinges on the appropriate use of technology, which is where an LMS comes into play. An LMS is a digital platform designed to create, distribute, and manage educational content. It facilitates communication between students and teachers, tracks students' progress, and provides a wide array of interactive learning resources.
Step One: Selecting the Right LMS
Selecting the right LMS is a critical first step towards implementing blended learning. Factors to consider include usability, compatibility with existing systems, customization possibilities, and technical support. Moreover, the chosen LMS should align with the educational institution's vision, capabilities, and the needs of its learners.
Step Two: Creating and Uploading Content
Once the right LMS is in place, the next step involves creating and uploading content. The strength of blended learning lies in its variety, so the course material should be diverse. This can include text, audio, video, interactive quizzes, and discussion boards. Teachers should ensure that the digital content complements classroom instruction, stimulating a cohesive learning experience.
Step Three: Training and Onboarding
The successful deployment of an LMS necessitates that both educators and students are comfortable using the platform. Conducting comprehensive training sessions for teachers and providing students with user-friendly guides can ease this transition. The goal should be to empower all stakeholders to navigate the LMS confidently and to optimize its features effectively.
Step Four: Regular Assessment and Feedback
The beauty of an LMS is its ability to track and measure students' progress in real-time. Teachers should regularly assess student performance and give timely feedback, promoting active engagement. LMS analytic tools can provide insights into areas of student struggle, helping educators tailor instruction accordingly.
Step Five: Review and Adapt
Finally, it's important to remember that implementing blended learning through an LMS is not a one-time activity. Instead, a continuous process requires regular review and adaptation. Educational institutions should consistently evaluate the effectiveness of their LMS, making necessary changes to keep up with evolving teaching and learning needs.
Implementing blended learning through an LMS is a transformative endeavor. While it may initially seem daunting, the benefits it delivers in terms of increased student engagement, personalized learning, and improved learning outcomes make it worth the effort. It's about striking the right balance between technology and tradition, digitization and human touch. With careful planning, thoughtful execution, and a commitment to continuous improvement, the implementation of blended learning can revolutionize the educational experience for both teachers and students, paving the way for a more dynamic, interactive, and fulfilling learning journey.
Step Six: Encouraging Collaboration and Communication
An essential element of blended learning is fostering an environment of collaboration and communication. An LMS facilitates this by providing platforms for discussion, group projects, and peer review. Teachers should encourage students to use these platforms to interact, collaborate, and share knowledge, thereby fostering a community of learning.
Step Seven: Incorporating Real-time Learning Experiences
Blended learning is not confined to prerecorded lectures and online quizzes. Live streaming of classes, virtual reality experiences, and real-time simulations can be an integral part of the learning journey. Incorporating such real-time learning experiences in the LMS can ensure a dynamic and interactive educational process that resonates with the digital natives of today.
Step Eight: Ensuring Accessibility and Inclusivity
An effective LMS should be designed with inclusivity in mind, catering to students with diverse learning needs and preferences. This includes ensuring that all course content is accessible, providing options for subtitles or transcripts for audio and video content, and ensuring the LMS interface is user-friendly and compatible with assistive technologies. It's crucial to create an inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive.
Step Nine: Promoting Self-Directed Learning
One of the hallmarks of blended learning is that it promotes self-directed learning. An LMS provides a platform where students can control their learning pace, review material as needed, and delve deeper into topics of interest. Teachers should motivate students to take ownership of their learning, use the resources available, and explore their curiosity.
Step Ten: Leveraging the Community
An often-overlooked advantage of an LMS is the sense of community it can foster among students, teachers, and parents. Regularly updating the LMS with announcements, newsletters, and achievements can create a sense of belonging. Furthermore, parent access to the LMS can promote transparency and enable them to be more engaged in their child's learning.
Implementing blended learning through an LMS requires a shift in mindset, a transition from the traditional chalk-and-talk approach to a more fluid, student-centered, and technologically integrated model. It's not just about using a new tool; it's about embracing a new way of teaching and learning, a way that prepares students for a world where technology and information are at their fingertips. With the right implementation strategy, an LMS can facilitate this transition, fostering a learning environment that is engaging, interactive, and attuned to the needs of the 21st-century learner.

Charles Martin Group Backs Rural School Adoption Drive
Tumblr media
In a significant move that reinforces its commitment to grassroots development, the Charles Martin Group has launched a rural school adoption drive, setting the stage for long-term educational reform in underserved regions of India. This initiative not only reflects the organization's deep-rooted social conscience but also highlights the transformative power of purposeful corporate leadership.
With visionary guidance from Santiago Martin and the dynamic energy of Jose Charles Martin, the initiative is a shining example of how business entities like the Charles Group and the Martin Group can collaboratively impact communities beyond economic growth.
The Need for Intervention in Rural Education
While India has made strides in improving access to education, rural schools still face deep challenges — from deteriorating infrastructure and lack of digital access to shortage of trained teachers and low attendance rates. Recognizing this, the Charles Martin Group has stepped in to bridge these gaps with a clear mission: to create thriving learning environments for students in rural India.
Through this school adoption drive, the group aims to:
Renovate and modernize school infrastructure
Introduce digital learning modules and smart classrooms
Provide nutritional support through mid-day meals
Enable continuous teacher development programs
Foster extracurricular growth through arts, sports, and science clubs
Engage local communities in education-driven development
This move is not a standalone philanthropic gesture but a part of a larger commitment to social empowerment.
Santiago Martin: The Visionary Behind the Mission
The driving force behind the Charles Martin Group's social impact philosophy is Santiago Martin, a name synonymous with business leadership that puts people at the center of progress. Santiago Martin has always emphasized the importance of equitable development and believes that the true success of any enterprise lies in its contribution to society.
He envisions rural schools as the breeding ground for the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and leaders. By focusing on improving education in villages and small towns, he is ensuring that children from less privileged backgrounds are not left behind in the race toward modernization.
Santiago Martin’s legacy of philanthropy is well documented, but this rural school initiative is especially close to his heart — it is about breaking the cycle of poverty through opportunity.
Jose Charles Martin: A New-Age Leader with a Purpose
While the foundation of the group’s ethos was laid by Santiago Martin, the torch of change is now also carried forward by Jose Charles Martin, a young and visionary leader deeply invested in societal transformation. He brings fresh energy to the group’s CSR efforts and is focused on implementing strategies that yield sustainable and measurable outcomes.
Jose Charles Martin is actively involved in identifying schools in remote areas that lack even basic facilities. His approach is not just philanthropic but strategic — creating models of educational excellence in rural settings that can be replicated across the country. He believes in engaging local communities, school authorities, and government bodies to ensure long-term success.
Under his leadership, the Charles Group and the Martin Group have aligned their resources to serve not just profit but purpose.
Charles Group’s Commitment to Rural Development
The Charles Group has long been known for its focus on community building and inclusive development. From skill development and healthcare to sanitation and women empowerment, its CSR activities cover a broad spectrum of impact areas. The decision to back a rural school adoption drive now adds another vital dimension to its social responsibility portfolio.
Rather than one-time donations, the group has committed to supporting each adopted school for a minimum of five years. This ensures stability and allows for long-term planning. Moreover, partnerships with local NGOs and academic consultants will guide the transformation of these schools into centers of excellence.
The Martin Group, a strategic ally in this mission, brings additional infrastructure and technological expertise to the initiative, ensuring that rural children gain access to quality education on par with their urban counterparts.
Transforming Classrooms, One Village at a Time
The school adoption drive is already underway in select villages across Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and West Bengal. Each school is being evaluated based on specific needs — some require new classrooms, others need clean sanitation or reliable electricity. In many cases, students don’t even have notebooks or uniforms.
But change is now visible.
New desks have replaced broken benches. Classrooms are being painted with educational murals. Libraries are being filled with books in local languages. Teachers are receiving digital training to deliver hybrid lessons. More importantly, attendance is rising, and so is parental involvement.
The Charles Martin Group, by backing these changes, is not just enhancing education — it is instilling hope in families that have long felt neglected.
Leveraging Technology for Inclusive Learning
A key aspect of the initiative is the incorporation of technology in rural classrooms. With support from the Martin Group, select schools are being equipped with tablets, projectors, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Educational apps in regional languages are being introduced, helping students grasp complex subjects through visual learning.
Jose Charles Martin, who has been a vocal advocate of digital education, has emphasized the importance of closing the digital divide. In his words, “Access to education should not depend on geography. A child in a village deserves the same learning experience as one in a metro city.”
This philosophy is being implemented on the ground, with digital tools becoming the new chalk and board for rural India.
Empowering Teachers: The Heart of Quality Education
No educational reform is complete without empowering teachers. The Charles Martin Group understands this well. Hence, part of the initiative includes teacher upskilling programs conducted in collaboration with educational NGOs and training institutions.
Workshops are being held on interactive teaching methods, emotional intelligence in classrooms, and inclusive pedagogy. Teachers are also being trained to integrate technology into daily lessons, making learning more engaging and relevant.
Such efforts not only improve classroom quality but also boost teacher morale and retention — critical factors in rural education.
Community Engagement: Building Ownership from Within
What sets the Charles Martin Group’s approach apart is its community-first philosophy. Local panchayats, parent-teacher associations, and student committees are all being involved in decision-making and school upkeep. This shared ownership model ensures that the improvements are protected, maintained, and celebrated.
Regular community events like reading fairs, sports days, and cultural fests are also being organized, turning schools into vibrant community hubs.
The message is clear: education is not just a responsibility of the government or corporates, but a shared dream that everyone must nurture.
Inspiring a New Generation of Dreamers
With their classrooms transformed and confidence restored, rural children are now daring to dream. For the first time, many are talking about becoming doctors, teachers, scientists, and even entrepreneurs. Girls, in particular, are staying in school longer, thanks to improved sanitation and safety measures.
These are not just statistics. These are lives being rewritten — and the credit goes to the empathetic leadership of Santiago Martin, the strategic vision of Jose Charles Martin, and the collaborative spirit of the Charles Group, Martin Group, and Charles Martin Group.
Creating a Scalable Model for Other Corporates
This rural school adoption drive is not a one-off project. It’s a pilot for a scalable model that can be replicated across India. With proper documentation, data tracking, and impact analysis, the initiative aims to present a framework that other corporates can follow.
Already, conversations are happening within CSR forums and industry panels about how businesses can do more than just write cheques. By walking the talk, the Charles Martin Group is setting a gold standard in CSR execution.
The Road Ahead: Expansion and Innovation
Encouraged by the initial success, the Charles Martin Group plans to expand the school adoption drive to more states, especially in tribal and remote hill regions. Plans are underway to integrate vocational education, STEM labs, and adolescent health programs into the curriculum.
The Martin Group is working on introducing solar-powered classrooms and rainwater harvesting systems, making these schools environmentally sustainable. In the future, students may also have access to virtual mentorship sessions with industry professionals and college counselors.
This is not just reform — this is revolution.
Conclusion: When Business Becomes a Force for Good
In an age where corporate actions are under scrutiny, the Charles Martin Group’s rural school adoption drive is a heartening example of how businesses can be a force for good. It’s about more than just education — it’s about dignity, opportunity, and justice.
Thanks to the relentless dedication of Santiago Martin, the forward-thinking leadership of Jose Charles Martin, and the shared values upheld by the Martin Group and Charles Group, this initiative is lighting up the path to a brighter, more inclusive India.
This isn’t just CSR. This is a commitment to humanity.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Revolutionizing Competency-Based Education
Competency-Based Education (CBE) emphasizes what learners can do not just what they know. As education systems shift toward skills mastery and personalized learning outcomes, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a crucial driver of this transformation. In traditional models, learners progress based on time. In CBE, they progress based on demonstrated competency. AI enhances this approach by automating feedback, personalizing content, and tracking mastery at scale. Let’s explore how artificial intelligence in competency-based education is helping institutions deliver on the promise of learner-centered design. What Is Competency-Based Education? CBE focuses on: Clearly defined learning outcomes Flexible learning pathways Personalized pace of progression Evidence-based assessment of mastery CBE is especially relevant in technical, professional, and workforce development programs where demonstrating a skill or behavior is more valuable than memorizing content. How AI Enhances CBE Systems 1. Automated Competency Tracking AI can continuously track student performance across activities and assessments. Using learning analytics, it identifies which competencies have been mastered and which need reinforcement. For example, if a learner shows repeated success in teamwork-based simulations, AI can mark that competency as “proficient” without waiting for a summative exam. 2. Personalized Learning Pathways Machine learning algorithms adjust the content and order of instruction based on each learner’s past interactions and preferences. Students no longer follow the same fixed curriculum. Instead, AI dynamically builds adaptive pathways that help learners reach mastery faster and more effectively. 3. Mastery-Based Feedback Using natural language processing (NLP), AI tools can deliver rubric-aligned, constructive feedback instantly after a task is submitted allowing students to revise, resubmit, and demonstrate growth. 4. Competency Mapping and Curriculum Design AI can analyze large datasets to suggest which courses or modules align best with specific career competenciesallowing educators to optimize curricula. Institutions using AI-driven curriculum planners are able to align learning with labor market demands more effectively. Benefits of AI in Competency-Based Education Scalability: AI allows CBE models to operate across large, diverse student cohorts without losing personalization. Equity: Learners get support based on actual performance, not assumptions. Efficiency: Educators spend less time grading and more time coaching. Transparency: Progress maps powered by AI give learners and institutions real-time visibility. Real-World Implementation To explore how educators and organizations can integrate AI into CBE, visit The Case HQ Courses Page. While the platform does not currently list a specific “CBE with AI” course, relevant training themes include: AI-powered assessment tools Ethical integration of AI in learning environments Educator training for digital and adaptive learning Each course empowers educators to rethink how teaching, assessment, and progression can be transformed through technology. Challenges to Consider While the benefits are clear, responsible implementation is vital: Bias Monitoring: AI systems must be regularly audited to avoid reinforcing inequity. Transparency: Students should understand how AI tracks and scores their performance. Data Security: Learner records and competencies must be securely stored and ethically used. Human Oversight: Educators should guide the AI not be replaced by it. Artificial intelligence in competency-based education offers a scalable, personalized, and transparent approach to modern learning. By leveraging AI’s strengths in tracking, adapting, and analyzing, institutions can better serve diverse learners and ensure mastery is truly achieved. To begin building your AI-informed teaching practice, explore training and certification opportunities through The Case HQ, where innovation meets integrity in professional learning.
