I feel like a lot of people point more towards Leo saying that he's useless without his brothers more than they point towards him saying he's useless in the maze of champions episode and I think the reason for that is that he becomes more skilled in that field as the show goes on and it's hard to pull angst out of it when that's the case, but I really do think that puts more of a spotlight on his complex regarding the idea of "uselessness" than him saying he's useless without his brothers.

This is because I think him saying he's useless without his brothers is more indicative of a level of emotional dependency. We can assume that they grew up largely away from society, sticking together in isolation. This often (... basically always) has a profound impact on a child's psychological development. We already know Raph can't function outside the group. At least not when it's unexpected.

I think this applies to most of them, even if it manifests in different ways.

I actually find it interesting, the idea that Donnie doesn't talk about his "emotionally unavailable bad boy image" exclusively as some kind of fantasy, but somewhat taking from an understanding (that they all probably have) that his identity isn't so reliant on the others' existences as the others' identities are.

Everyone else's role is related to the fact that they exist as a group. Raph is the oldest, the protector. Leo is the faceman, he speaks for the group, almost like a lawyer. And Mikey is the younger brother, as well as the hypeman. These are all central to their identities and are also inherently dynamical. Their senses of self are in relation to their existence as a collective. But Donnie's understanding of himself is pretty self contained. He's the science guy. He wouldn't handle the loss of his brothers any better than any of his brothers would, but it wouldn't shatter his sense of self. He would still know who he is without them.

To perhaps provide a visual of this dynamic in action-

There's angst in all directions there tbh. Raph and Leo's are kind of self explanatory and straight up have been explored in canon. But I think that Mikey thinks he's less reliant on this dynamic than he is, and Donnie isn't as reliant on the others but he probably feels disconnected from his brothers. That could be interesting psychologically, in contrast with the others' bonds forming because there's no one else to bond with, him going the other direction and becoming self reliant.

Although it is implied that he's the closest with April which may have lead him to being slightly, technically healthier about his sense of self. Though I do think that seeing the bond his brothers have that he doesn't experience with them does probably still cause some feelings of isolation regardless. I don't think his brothers are thrilled with this going the other way around either tbh

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks they're codependent and not in a shippy way either. I'm not sure if I want to say it's codependency in an emotionally abusive/manipulative way but it's definitely not healthy and there are other factors to it outside out that as well.

I think it’s only manipulative on Jimmy’s front.

I see Curly as this deeply lonely person because he doesn’t open up well. I believe he is very rehearsed because he’s used to being the rock, strong man and stabilizing force. His vulnerability is very much ignored or downplaying in the game intentionally by Jimmy who uses his and others woes as a comparative. I see this as a common behavior between them but also just something Curly will do to himself to keep himself complacent. He doesn’t have much he actually enjoys in life more so things he just does. Jimmy is one thing he’s felt more than complacent and comfortable around in a long while despite how inconsiderate Jimmy is. He’s more used to it than he loves it but he’s used to that.

Jimmy in the other hand is like a dog that bites the hand that feeds it. Jimmy recognizes those little cracks Curly has and likes to dig into them to get a foothold. He knows Curly isn’t the one to suddenly budge, so if he can keep him wedged in a place he is, he’s secured to. He needs Curly, but forgets that he chose to attach himself that way and resents Curly for keeping him from getting out from under him. He based everything off the reflections on the shield he force Curly to be for him but can’t see the painful light Curly obscures.

To me, it’s really just Curly is used to how draining Jimmy is. He relents and works with whatever keeps Jimmy placated because it’s easier and he doesn’t feel like he has much else that he actually enjoys. It’s an abusive relationship but not physically, not until after the crash atleast. Jimmy’s a leech and Curly just got used to being lightheaded.

Thinking about it, Daedalus and only Daedalus consistently refers to Donov as 代表 (representative) instead of the ergo proxy specific term 執国 that nearly everyone else uses (officially translated as regent, but the more I think about it, that word has kinda the implications of representative so maybe i would have chosen something different… I’ve seen it translated as administrator too. It’s command/govern+ country) I mean besides Re-l who just calls him grandfather lol. Raul even draws attention to this when talking to Daedalus in episode 10, and I do think it’s significant.

Anyway I was just thinking about why he would always use such a term, and I think it has to do with the fact that he knows more than most since he’s in charge of proxy research. Also I see both official and fansubs mess this up when I think it’s an important distinction to make that he uses a different term.

So he knows that Donov is just a “representative” for the true creator of Romdo, a proxy. Idk how much he knew about Proxy One specifically, but he was created to take care of Re-l who is meant to bring back their creator so I feel like he did know the situation at least to some degree if not the details. He knows what role Monad is playing for the city and that she was taken from Mosk so presumably he knew there was another proxy at some point at least that sustained their city.

And by the end it’s clear Daedalus is someone that clings to gods and thinks all the “pseudo-humans” as failures meant to die, so all the more reason to simply call him a representative instead of the more commanding sounding title of 執国 (it’s also sad that EN-only viewers will miss that the reading of ep22’s JP title is read the same way, “shikkoku” 桎梏 bonds/fetters. Which also seems like a deliberate thing to have the title of the administrator of your city sound like.)
