That's why I do not like when the authors create in Twine instead of CS. It may look boring but it gives you three basic themes; white, sepia, black and you can choose depends on your preferences. We are talking about text game, after all, not visual novel so author should provide the reader comfort during long reading. Aesthetics is a secondary matter.

I don't get it. It seems that most authors in itch.io / tumblr community do not care about readers but create themes that they like the most and do not pay attention that font style, font color or background can be awful to read. This may not be good for the project too: doesn't matter writing is great and the story intriguing, if the potential reader gives up, because their eyes hurt from reading...

I don’t like the idea that a text game is somehow lesser than a visual novel and I don’t like the accusation towards authors in IF that they don’t care about their readers when most authors break their backs creating free games for the audience to enjoy, it is not simple and it is not easy and after all that to have someone say to you that you don’t care about the readers is not only false but hurtful. Do you know how hard it is to write a choice based game? Do you know how many hours of work weekly have to go into it? I’m right now looking into changing the text colour based on themes from a code another IF author just sent me but I will have you know right now that I won’t be disrespected nor be told what is good and not good for my project. I always try to treat my readers with respect and I demand the same in return

The last thing I wanna see is fucking SWINDLE digging in my couch for change as his buddies that he apparently let in while I was gone, are all bumming on my couch watching my tv on a YouTube cybug documentary as they raided all my fruit snacks/juice and jello!!!!! They can stay until the gas is gone but never without permission again.

Lil shits about to pay rent. AND I KNOW SWINDLE CAN! Lil shit would probably just bite me a lot as I take a few cents from his horde but later be appeased when I buy or make him (and I guess his friends) the good beetle jelly.

(We don’t have that gas thing where I live. If anything setting a fire with yard waste (old dead or dried leaves/plants) mosquitoes and stuff HATE the smoke from certain plants and would avoid the area for a while, or we just buy the candles or stuff. Very much a we use nature to tell nature to fuck off kinda place.)

Do you have tips for drawing/designing Xeno styled inkfish? They’re so shaped

of course!

Generally when I draw xenos, I try to emphasise non-human traits as much as possible by incorporating in real-life cephalopod biology. Basically I try to make it extremely obvious that what you're looking at isn't human, but actually something else entirely.

A good start is to do away with joints/bones entirely, and to add spots/patterns to the skin to make it appear less mammalian. Suckers on the fingers and faintly-pigmented skin also help as well.

The eyes are also another important thing! Most pelagic squids have round pupils in real life, but I tend to draw inklings with horizontal pupils anyway as it helps achieve that creaturely effect I'm going for.

Of course everyone has their own unique approach to xeno inkfish, these are merely suggestions and not a ruleset or anything haha. It’s taken me a while to find a style I’ve found most comfortable, and even then I regularly change stuff as I learn more about cephalopods. The beauty of xeno designs is that it's entirely up to you where you decide to go with it. You don’t even have to be realistic, literally the only baseline is creature!
