Once again, emo culture being born into the early 2000s, shorthand texting was popular- who has time to click on the keypad for each letter when you could do about three instead?

You defiantly know the classic 'OMG' and 'LOL', but do you know them all and what they mean?

What do I say? How do I sound 'emo'?

Emo culture has some exclusive terminology, they also have some other phrases that came from the early 2000s. Some you may know and use, some you might have heard and some you may have had no idea about.

Below is a list of words and their meanings to help you out;

Bae: A shortened version of 'baby'. Used as a term for a partner or as an adjective for something you like/an attractive person. "She's so bae."

Biatch: Bitch. A word to describe someone you don't like. "Shes such a biatch."

Cutting: The act of self harm, slitting your wrist. Don't cut please x

Crashy: Classy, but trashy. Someone whos attractive and dress in revealing/trashy outfits but have high standards. "Shes cute, but crashy."

Crunk: Excited, hyped up and/or intoxicated. Also a genre of music. "Down to get crunk tonight?"

Dayger: A daytime rager, a party being held during daylight. "Did you get the dayger invite?"

Emo: Someone typically with black hair and clothing who listens to emo music. We all know that's a stereotype. "He's totally emo, he loves Pierce."

Fetch: Something that looks cool, nice, good or expensive. "Your outfit is so fetch."

Fer Shur: For sure. "Oh I'm fer shur down."

Gucci: Anything cool, great or top. "That outfit is gucci."

Kickback: A small get-together between friends or a party. "Come! It's kickback."

Legit: 100% "Yeah legit down for tomorrow."

LELZ: Another way of spelling LOL (laugh out loud). "Lelz!"

Mood/Feels: A way to say 'I feel you'. "You're upset? Mood."

Noob: A poorly skilled person and/or game player. "You're such a noob, you've lost four times."

Normie: Someone who isn't in the scene/a 'normal' person. "Did you see that normie? Who wears pink?"

PLUR: Peace. Love. Unity. Respect- an exchange of a bracelet. "You wanna PLUR?"

Poser: Someone who tries to fit in with the emo fashion and culture just for attention or popularity. "You're just a poser, you don't even like punk."

Peeps: People. "What you peeps up to?"

Pwned: To dominate and/or defeat something. Same as saying 'get owned'. "Get pwned dude."

Rawr: A cute sound, happy/cute imitation of a roar, or used to express attraction/say 'I love you'. "Heh rawr <3"

Sadboi/boy Sadgurl/girl: A person who is open about his emotions, especially sadness, and channels their sadness through music, art or poetry. "He's a sadboi, legit."

Screaming: Being really happy/excited about something. "Internally screaming right now."

Sick: Cool/awesome. "Dude, that kickflip? sick."

Smexy: Another way to say sexy. "Omg he's so smexy."

Straight Edge: Refraining from using drugs, alcohol and tobacco/cigarettes. "Can't smoke right now, gone straight edge."

Totes: Totally. "Yeah totes down for tomorrow."

Trashy: A 2000s fashion style that usually includes things like, bold makeup, rhinestones and jewels, animal prints, faux fur and matching tracksuits. It can also be used to describe normie wear or clothing that looks- well, trashy. "Look at that juicy tracksuit, so trashy."

Turnt: Excited, hyped up and/or high. "I got totes turnt up last night."

Wannabe: Someone that thinks they are emo but aren't. They claim to like the same music, wear the clothing and say stereotypical things like 'I <ut myself'. (ugh). "I can't believe she's such a wannabe."

ZOMG: A more ramped up version of OMG (oh my god). "ZOMG no way?!"

You'd be surprised but I do a lot of outreach online. Cyberspace creates a perfect forum for people to chat anonymously. It needn't be bound by sex, race or orientation; you are only inhibited by your imagination. This young man was someone I bumped into one evening. He really touched me. I saved our conversation to share with you. For all of you who are cyber-not. ;) and :) indicate sideways smiles, "<nods>" things in brackets are actions you can't see. During this fifteen minute dialogue, I felt I was typing to save a life.

Two days later RKM3 bid AOL and the cyber community adieu, his monies he had set aside had run out. So he couldn’t be online anymore. He said he was only “out” online. What is he doing now that he can’t sign on and become an anonymous person represented by just his personality? It makes me wonder. It also makes me sad to think that I was in this space once and that there are so many people that still are, sometimes their entire life. I was so happy I could reach out to him and at least for one night let him know that he is loved for just being him-self. and that he is not his circumstance.

[Afterwords: This was A LOT! And albeit NYPAEC's core demographic stories were a bit different, I don't think they fell far off the mark, coming from financially insecure households with a lot of children, being gay and not having a lot of options. As I advised Rich sometimes it is best to keep your own counsel in regards to your sexuality, because becoming unhoused because your family discovers you're gay is an all too common story, something totally shared by my NYPAEC peers.

Clearly there was someone who cared about Rich with him having a trust fund at seven years old. But being that adults, usually parents are left in charge of these things, he was cheated out of this money he probably inherited from a grandparent.

Another thing that is so obvious to me in re-reading this instant message, is how intelligent and articulate Rich is. Clearly a young person, probably high school student, with so much potential, and like way too many in this situation not a lot of opportunities at his disposal.

The universality of his story is what is so sad to me. It was devastating that his only place to express his sexuality was subsequently cut off too. What happens to these children who have to repress who they are just to survive? What are the long-term mental and spiritual effects of having to always pretend to be something you're not.

As I said back in the nineties, the repercussions sometimes cause collateral damage in women sometimes being infected by a partner they don't even realize is repressing who they are. This alone would make you think that as a society we would discourage this kind of behavior because of the incidental repercussions. But since these damages are usually inflicted upon other protected classes, not the dominant class, they are disregarded.

There was only one thing I think I could have done differently with Rich was not bring up suicide, even incidentally to make a point. His situation was so precarious it wasn't even a good idea to joke about killing yourself. Otherwise I think I did an amazing job of handling a very complex situation on the fly. Rich was at a different place in his life than me, clearly coming from a different social-economical background, and unlike me had less options and opportunities, and I still found a way to connect with him. That is great peer counseling in my opinion.

As I reflect on my life and what I have contributed to this world, I can feel proud if I even had a momentary effect on Rich. I have been feeling like I didn't do much during my time here, and I can see that clearly wasn't true I was doing my best to help others even those living on different coast in very different situations than I was. I hope publishing it opened the eyes of folks who had the means to assist young folks just like Rich to change their situations and cultivate spaces where folks like him could express themselves unencumbered by societal burdens or familial judgements.]

please don't mistake silence for hatred. please don't mistake unanswered plotting messages as indifference, or a lack of enthusiasm towards you. considering the ages of most roleplayers, many of us have bills to pay, families to take care of, medical conditions to treat, appointments to make, classes to take, homes to clean, and lives to live away from the computer that are far, far more important than writing on tumblr — life has a tendency to get in the way of hobbies and fun things like this. be patient with your fellow writers. if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. of course you can set your boundaries, keep your space comfortable, and softblock whoever you wish, but do so while recognizing it's probably not hatred or apathy that keeps them from leaping into your dms with message after message. they probably love this hobby just as much as you... but sometimes life gets in the way.
