I think it's crazy how people will defend young Peter, but hate any other death eater characters. They'll say he was just a kid once, someone who loved his friends and played pranks with them. He was a kid before he was ever a traitor. Before he was ever bad. While I completely agree, and Peter is one of my favourite characters, I refuse to agree with this when they'll hate on any of the other death eaters, especially in the same post.

They Were Kids Once Too.

Barty? He was a kid, too. Evan? Once a kid. Regulus? He was a kid. He never even got to be anything else. Bellatrix? a kid. Draco? a kid. Narcissa? a kid. Just. Like. Peter.

They were all children once. They all enjoyed having fun with their friends at one point. They were children. And many of them were still children when they became death eaters. Children, who we know are more susceptible to propaganda. Children, who are more likely to do what they're asked. Children, who believe lies. They were just kids.

Will I defend the actions they took as death eaters? No. Absolutely not. But I will defend the people they were before they became what they ended up as. The children they were before being indoctrinated into a cult.

If you're going to defend Peter, because he was just a kid, you can't turn around and hate on Barty, Regulus, Evan, or anyone else for being death eaters, because they were just kids too.

idk why im in such a bad mood rn but it actually PISSES ME TF OFF how the entire marauders fandom collectively decided to take this bum-ass loser character with one discernable impact on the storyline (regulus. im talking about regulus) and make him a super complex, three-dimensional MAIN character in the era that’s being literally paired with JAMES POTTER(???) when they could’ve taken a character who AREADY has existing complexities and everything they could ever want and develop them. but they won’t because that character is a fucking woman ☠️☠️

the way the black sisters would have the entire fandom in a fucking chokehold if they were boys. do you actually think sirius and regulus would be as cherished as they are now if they were women? hell fucking no, regulus would be hated on so badly. the way we were given narcissa and fucking andromeda too? here’s the entire fandom yapping on and on about how cool regulus is for rebelling against the dark lord when narcissa was doing it and fucking getting away with it too (because she’s better and doesn’t suck ass). here’s andromeda going against her entire bloodline ON HER OWN but yet shes still so overshadowed by sirius (who literally came after her). then you got bellatrix who is canonly one of the most powerful (and cuntiest) witches in the hp-verse and you decide to go and develop BARTY instead. think about it. they’re both crazy except one is more of a loser and is a male so of course the fandom will choose him.

and then. of course. lily evans who is literally the mother of the entire verse itself is still out here fighting for literal recognition and development from the fandom. and those mfs still give it to regulus instead ☠️☠️

Hello! I saw your blog post about fanfiction where Snape becomes Draco's godfather, and I also have a question. If a Drarry fanfiction portrays Snape as being very close to Draco or having ambiguous relationships with Lucius or Narcissa, I would stop reading that story. However, it's true that Snape does show favoritism towards Draco. I don't know why?

We don't really see Severus and Lucius interact, but we do hear that they're friends, or at least *friendly.* Sirius calls Snape Lucius' "lapdog," and Narcissa calls him Lucius "oldest friend." We see Prefect!Lucius patting Baby!Snape on the back right when he's being sorted into Slytherin, and adult Lucius is talking up Severus to Umbridge.

We also get a lot of power struggle/tension between various death eaters (since Voldemort likes to play them off each other...) Bellatrix vs Narcissa, Bellatrix vs Lucius, Snape vs Bellatrix, Snape vs Peter, Peter vs Barty. But not Snape vs Lucius, and Narcissa is definitely friendly enough with him to know where he lives, and go to his house to ask for a pretty huge favor. The scene is written ambiguously on purpose (is Snape loyal to Dumbledore or to Voldemort? wait until the next book to find out!) But Narcissa certainly seems to at least believe that "Draco's in trouble, we need to protect him" and "You've been Lucius' friend for a long time" are arguments that would like... mean something to Snape?

To me, Draco totally reads like the *type* of teacher's pet who knows the teacher outside of school. He's very comfortable with Snape, and Snape does tend to praise/give special treatment to *Draco* (and not like, Pansy or Blaise or whoever.) I mean I know why, the writing is generating conflict for Harry by giving the rival he *specifically* has a problem with power. But the side effect is that Snape comes across as just... liking Draco.

I think it's totally plausible that Snape is a family friend. Making him Draco's godfather would be fanon, but an extension of that idea. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "ambiguous" relationship - Snape definitely has some kind of relationship with the Malfoys, and it doesn't seem like they're enemies. You could say they're friends, allies, Snape likes Narcissa but puts up with/flatters Lucius, Snape doesn't like either of them but staying within their social circle is necessary for the spy thing. If you go with a darker, more manipulative Lucius, then maybe Severus has complicated, messy feelings about him. It could even be romantic. I think Severus/Narcissa/Lucius, or any pairing within that is lot of fun.

I also think that Lucius is hugely responsible for Snape becoming a Death Eater. And, the Lucius of the second half of the series, who is starting to have cold feet and misgivings about this whole Voldemort thing... would feel some sort of way about that.

Prompt 5 - Operation

Wolfstar, February 5, word count 849

Previous part First part

One year previously

Sirius had decided that he didn’t want to just leave the family again. This time, he was going to take it down completely. But to do that, he needed time and to play the perfect little heir. So, he shut himself away from anyone he had even an ounce of attraction for. He couldn’t risk blowing everything because he needed a shag. Barty helped. He continued to hurl insults at Sirius to keep him from temptation. On the plus side, his good behaviour apparently had rewards. His parents had deemed it suitable for him to be in charge of the day-to-day running of the Black Star hotel chain, but only the ones in and around London. They didn’t want him straying too far. It came with the use of the secret penthouses above the ones they sold to customers. He utilised them as best he could, barely spending more than a night a week in his actual home. 

On an exploration of one of the City hotels, he discovered that there was a secret passage that led from the top floor all the way into the basement and up into the alley behind the hotel. He found he could slip out undetected. It was freeing to know he could have this one little bit of freedom where he wasn’t under the watchful eye of his mother's little minions. 

He’d found it strange that while the washers and dryer were always on, there didn’t seem to be anyone in the laundry room whenever he passed through it, but according to the staff list, there was someone in there every day. Different ones on the weekend. But the main one, a Remus Lupin, was supposed to be in there all week, but Sirius had never laid eyes on him. He’d shrugged in the end, the work was getting done, and if this guy wanted to slack off, who was he to judge?

It was the secret passage through which he and Barty met up in person to plot his family’s downfall. 

“No, Barty, we can’t leave anything for them to pick up. They could transfer everything to Bella or Cissa’s husband.” Sirius shook his head as he explained why Barty’s pan wouldn’t work. 

“Oooo, tall blonde and haughty, yes, please,” Barty purred. Sirius threw a throw pillow at him.  

“And here I thought you had an ounce of taste,” He gagged, thinking about Lucius Malfoy and his oily self-importance. “I have no idea why Cissa picked him when she could have picked anyone she wanted. Princess of the family and everything.” Sirius had always got along with Narcissa. They shared a love of over-the-top dramatics and a sense of humour. He’d watched as Lucius had quickly staunched that and had her acting like all the other stuck-up young ladies that he was forced to interact with. At least she still wasn’t so bad a Bellatrix. 

“Yeah, yeah, alright, calm down,” Barty laughed. “Let’s get back to Operation Black Hole,”

“Barty, we are not calling it that,” Sirius complained for the tenth time. 

“But it works so well,” Barty whined, but stopped when Sirius raised a brow at him warningly. Barty’s joy left him, and he slumped down in his chair. 

“You look so much like Reg when you do that,” He said quietly. Sirius put down his pen and hugged Barty. 

“Sorry,” he said softly into his ear, Barty’s soft hair tickling his face. Barty had moments like this. Sirius knew he tried to keep everything hidden under a bratty, jokey veneer, but Sirius knew a mask when he saw one and could see the pain hidden inside Barty.  

“What about you,” Barty said, breaking the sad silence in the room.

“Hmm?” Sirius hummed, unsure what Barty meant. 

“If we take everything down, what about you? What will you do for money?” He asked. Sirius shrugged. 

“No idea, but it’ll be fun figuring it out. I still own my flat, so I’ll have that to fall back on, and my personal savings can’t be touched, so I can survive on that for a while,” Barty nodded gently. 

“Good, I wouldn’t want you to have nothing at the end, not after everything you’re having to do to keep them happy,” Sirius hugged him harder. Barty was becoming so important to him. Not romantically, more like a more annoying brother than Regulus had ever been and one that he would quite happily throw in the Thames if it would shut him up for five seconds. “Come on then,” Barty chirped, his mask back in place. “Let’s iron out Operation Black Hole and get this show on the road.”

“For the last time, Barty, we are not calling it Operation Black Hole,” Sirius growled before jumping on Barty and knocking him to the floor as they wrestled. He wondered what the people below would think. Probably that the hotel had giant rats in its attic. Oh well, he thought as he pinned Barty’s arms behind his back and started laughing as Barty tried to squirm free. “I win this one, Crouch.”

I love how Bellatrix refers to her and Voldemort collectively as 'we' and doesn't complete her sentence. It's either because she doesn't want to admit they aren't talking or because she doesn't want to reveal much about their relationship. Maybe both. Either way, she feels vulnerable. I wonder how she would have completed this sentence.

The use of the word 'lately' is also very telling. It implies that generally, they do speak a lot and are close, and it's only recently that this has changed. It's not the norm for Bellatrix and Voldemort to distant from each other.

All their interactions show a familiarity Voldemort's interactions with other Death Eaters don't. He uses her nickname and she speaks to him like a lover. She talks back to him. She even has the courage to defend the Malfoys when he's mocking them.

Compare this to Barty's statement

'The Dark Lord and I,' said Moody, and he looked completely insane now, towering over Harry, leering down at him, 'have much in common. Both of us, for instance, had very disappointing fathers … very disappointing indeed. Both of us suffered the indignity, Harry, of being named after those fathers. And both of us had the pleasure … the very great pleasure … of killing our fathers to ensure the continued rise of the Dark Order!'

He maintains a clear separation between himself and Voldemort by referring to them collectively as 'The Dark Lord and I' and 'both of us' instead of 'we' like Bellatrix.

remus: little miss sunshine brutal and disturbingly human, but intertwined with themes of love, family, support, and healing

james: talladega nights the theme of this movie is that friendship is magic. you know james was saying "if you're not first, you're last" for years after seeing this movie. also he tried to create a shake-and-bake thing with sirius

sirius: howl's moving castle "that howl is so fucking hot" "he literally just looks like you" "exactly" sirius sees himself as this main love interest (howl) and he sees remus as sophie, especially when she's an old woman that howl has to take care of. all he wants to do is take care of remus

peter: bridge to terabithia peter seems like the kind of person to find stories of tragical childhood friendships really compelling. he also loves josh hutcherson (who doesn't)

regulus: the secret life of walter mitty he relates to the main character - a man who is controlled and meticulous but longs to go on an adventure. he also wishes that sirius would pull him out of his monotonous life and into the unknowable but with complete acceptance of who he is.

lily: little women in the way that i feel like i've been shot every time i watch a movie involving complicated mother/daughter relationships, lily would be deeply compelled by stories about sisterhood. especially jo and amy who always feel second to each other

mary: princess mononoke she would relate to the main character and be very enthralled by ashitaka. definitely a comfort watch for her.

marlene: raising arizona or zoolander she loves absurdist comedies with lovable and endearing characters. she is also low-key attracted to nick cage when he was young, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret.

dorcas: arrival or parasite dorcas has unequivocally good movie tastes. she likes high concept stories with heavy thematic writing and devastating plots. she talks about them in detail for weeks afterward

pandora: midsommar and pan's labyrinth she loves movies with comically intense violence. she finds high control groups fascinating. she definitely loves pan's labyrinth because of the freaky monsters and the fact that it sounds like it could belong to her

xenophilius: the twilight saga he knows every detail and loves to examine the story from all sides. he and pandora bond over the fact that carlisle is a joseph smith archetype.

evan: deadpool evan sees deadpool as barty and loves the character because of it. he is also envious of the characters freedom to be himself

barty: the mummy he just thinks that everyone in this movie is really fucking hot

snape: pride and prejudice (2005) finds it super romantic and loves the way characters talk and deliver lines. he listens to the soundtrack as background music while he works.

frank longbottom: spiderman (no way home) no one was more excited than he was when the three spiderman characters interacted. he cried a lot when watching this movie

alice: narnia it was her sexual awakening ;)

narcissa: glass onion she loves a who-done-it story, she reads mystery novels all the time and she thought this one was the most exciting

bellatrix: barbarian or bones and all she watches bones and all like "when is it my turn to be happy?" and she watches barbarian like "what is it like to have a mother who loves you?" everyone thinks she's crazy

lucius: dune or the king he sees himself as the king. that scene where robert pattinson's character is slipping around in the mud and timmy's character is standing there unbothered - that's how lucius pictures himself and arthur weasley. he also thinks of his own family when he watches dune
