not to be mean but why was felix selected as team captain? they don't seem like they'd be very encouraging with their teammates or even interested in leading, & the fact that they smoke kinda implies they don't really care about their fitness or performing to their best ability. idk i feel like if i was an awkward new freshman on felix's team i would not be feeling very optimistic about the season, but presumably the coaches saw Something there to make them think they'd be a good captain, right?

Ahh. I think the main thing is that Felix is no-nonsense and super committed to tennis.

They’re not actually that terrible of a teammate, which explains why their teammates don’t dislike them. They can be abrasive and not the kindest or most nurturing, but hey—many sports people aren’t. In any case, they’re willing to do everything in their power to win, and in a lot of environments, particularly in sports, for example, dominant/assertive people are often valorized or at least tolerated more than in other settings.

Interesting point about smoking, I guess it’s similar to how a lot of older-era tennis players used to drink and eat pizza. I think Felix in general does care a lot about winning and pursuing excellence, but the smoking was a symbol of their self-destructive tendencies and their inability to control some impulses despite their ability to keep everything under wraps.

In any case I think you bring up very interesting points and I like your analysis of Felix—a certainly flawed character that I think represents our tendency to choose leaders that represent strength and power but aren’t always as community-centric as we need them to be. But also I think as this is largely a coming of age story, I also wanted even Felix to have moments of character development in which you see they’re also actually someone who’s 21 and not the best they can be.
