the difference between comic and movie agent stone is so funny bc in the comics he frames a woman for money laundering, takes over her coffee shop, and then calls her when she's in prison to use up her One Phone Call; in the movie he looks like he's going to burst into tears while making coffee in that very shop. the duality of man...

also it seems that his dedication to robotnik isn't because he's just a loyal lackey who takes abuse from any authority he's subjected to--he makes 3 people disappear within a week (all of them his superiors in this workplace) and keeps the last one as his own assistant. robotnik himself acknowledges that stone is "practically a genius" compared to the general population, and his manifesto addresses stone as still beneath robotnik, but above everyone else.

this is a man who is better than everyone around him and knows it. he earned this sense of superiority, not because robotnik bestowed it upon him, but because he has the skills to back that claim up. immediately upon removing the boss, he advertises a drink named after himself and kicks his feet up with a disposable underling at his side.

this is a guy who is following the orders of an evil genius because he likes them and wants to do it. this isn't a long-game of wanting to usurp or succeed robotnik, this is him still following along with the doctor's plans, even though he's gone. even though he's a cheerful and funny character in the movies, he still says things like, "you need to lighten up, shadow. we're about to rule the world," with a smile on his face. it's really easy for me to forget that he's actually also a villain and isn't just neutrally aligned as "robotnik's assistant."

which!! is also important because in sonic 3, we meet robotnik in a terrible place in life. and stone is still there, not just at the doctor's side but acting in what is likely the doctor's best interests even without robotnik's say (ie destroying the imposter badniks). he's still working, even if things have come to a standstill on robotnik's end.

agent stone stays with robotnik because as capable and skilled as he is, he knows that robotnik is better. this isn't just "he's a freak and is into robotnik being an invasive HR nightmare," nor is it "he's just a villain sidekick in a kids' movie who doesn't need motivation or purpose beyond the villain." this is, "his loyalty to robotnik is borne from genuine (and, dare i say, mutual) respect."
