Okay, I've written essentially two different essays for this, but I'm going to shorten it down. I can write an actual one later, formatted and everything, if requested, that's my bread and butter, but that's not what this blog is for primarily. (I will happily do so tho, I'm a huge nerd)

I do, however, have sources still! (I've been doing this for hours, lol) I'll link my top two in this post.

So my framing of Sappho isn't intended as bi-erasure or anything of the sorts.

From what I knew of her, for the most part, was the lady who wrote poems about other women and led to the creation of the words 'sapphic' and 'lesbian'. I started this blog as a caricature of the public perception of her. Silly little Greek lesbian auntie.

I looked more into the matter for this message, but ofc I was met with SO MUCH DEBATE AND NUANCE

Like- There is so much up in the air about this woman. Did she have a husband? Did she truly go after Phaon? Was she writing purely as herself? Was she writing as a collective?

The context surrounding her writing is so sparse. We've lost most of her writing, translating is a bitch, and the stuff we know about her from other people is inconsistent and holds inherent biases and things warp who she really was.

There is so much left up for interpretation, so much room for us to insert ourselves.

Again, this is just a silly blog, so I'm gonna keep it like that. We know her for her contribution to sapphic, lesbian, bi, pan, and all women loving women things we know today. I don't work to deny that by framing her as a lesbian, but this how I interpret her, so that's how I'm going to run the blog!

(We've lost so much of her writings, which brings me to tears. It's also important to remember that the character Sappho plays in her poems and Sappho herself could be two different people who draw inspiration from each other. Not only that, but translations may shift meanings, as well. And such translations and interpretations are influenced by our cultures and feelings that develop throughout time.

Her history and story is so wild and I absolutely love finding new articles with various interpretations across the years.

I also find the debates surrounding Kerkylas and Phaon to be an especially interesting example of context and how time can shift perspectives.

Kerkylas is considered to be a joke because his name and home translate to "Dick of Man".

Phaon's story is also very, very interesting. Some say his story may have been with a different Sappho of Lesbos! This is an actual thing and it's so interesting! (My jumping off point.)

you're getting a lot of asks like this but i also wanna thank you for this blog as a gay trans man who really relates to the butch label. i had no idea queer men also used these terms back then and seeing the examples from magazines of butch gay men made me feel very seen. part of my transition goal is to be a super masculine dude but still in a distinctly queer way and to kiss other super masculine queer dudes lol, i'm kind of like a butch4butch gay man i guess. although i also adore femme men. and beyond that as a trans man i just find the way butch women/people dress to look masculine and their fashion inspirational and want to use it as a guide to look/feel more masculine. i'm happy to find out these labels are for everybody. you're doing awesome stuff. i hope the tide turns in the general queer community soon too and people realize these terms aren't exclusive. this is like a comfort blog for me

This stuff makes me so happy, seriously!! I'm honestly just a guy who is passionate about being queerness, being femme bi mlm, and butch/femme stuff so I made this account to share my passion for that, create an inclusive space (since I myself felt left out), and also as an archive of resources! And to hear it had helped so many people is wonderful!

I too hope more people in the queer community are more accepting of non-lesbian butches and femmes. Like yes, these terms are probably going to always be primarily used by lesbians (and sapphics), but we deserve to be included and not met with hostility. I would say people are becoming more accepting, but there will always be types that have their brain rotted by radical feminism and lesbian separatism.

Good question! And the answer is,.. ehhhhhh?

There aren’t really any requirements one way or another for orientation play or dykebreaking or anything. You’ll actually find a lot of trans women participating, obviously as lesbians, but also roleplaying as men or male-adjacent “characters” so to speak (it’s a little more complicated than that though?? If you dig around this sphere enough you’ll see what I mean lmao there’s also a lot of transfem supremacy type stuff and playing around with the idea of the penis-repulsed lesbian that sort of overlap somewhere in there) so technically speaking, no, men aren’t required. That said, I’d say the broader appeal for myself and most other people into this comes from having men involved.

I touched on this a few times on the previous iterations of my blog, but my personal sexuality is deceivingly complicated—I’m a lesbian but I’m also somewhere on the aroace spectrum, and so that skews how I feel about sex in a specific way that lands on “I don’t really care about who I have it with as long as everyone feels good and is having fun.” At the end of the day though, I only feel the desire to have any long term committed relationships with women or sapphic people, which is part of the reason I use the lesbian label primarily (among others including gender shit)

In theory I could leave the attitude towards sex there and not put any more emphasis on it, but like with many other kinks, the sort of taboo element of “I shouldn’t want this, I’m a lesbian 🥺” is a hot vibe to me lmao it also plays into my humiliation/degradation and objectification kinks because like… I mean. It checks all those boxes.

And trust me—there are plenty of other lesbians on here who are into this and while I’m sure plenty of them would be down to roleplay this sort of thing, we’ve also found a pretty fuckin rad community of folks of all sorts of gender backgrounds who are fun to play with, including cis dudes and, like I mentioned earlier, trans women and transfem folks.

Introduction

Hi hello hi, this is a brand new experience for me (AKA my first time keeping a blog of a creative project in the hopes I will eventually finish it). The term ‘yuri’ has sort of become conventional when talking about lesbian or sapphic representation within media, which isn’t really a problem in itself, but I feel like I want for people to see that term as they saw the term yaoi, not recently, but you know what I mean & this sounds hypocritical obviously because of my blog name (which I don’t plan on changing any time soon) I just want this to serve as a reminder of the roots of that word, for example putting two minor females together and calling it ‘Yuri’ lightheartedly is fine, but the word itself does have sexual implications just like the word yaoi* **

*Just want to add- I’m pretty sure it’s more so derived from sexually explicit gl media- but If I’m wrong please feel free to correct me I wouldn’t want to spread misinformation, its entirely possible this is just a westernised concept of the word, I’m just speaking as having been a gay child with unrestricted internet access and having grown up around this stuff :))
