Do you often use random dungeon layout generators for your megadungeons? If so, how do you make those randomly generated layouts make sense as a space? I find that the eclectic nature of how the dungeon ends up looking makes it feel weird to consider the area as a real space instead of as the output to a random generator.
I use a lot of random generation when I make megadungeons, but I pretty much never use a layout generator. That's a solution to a different problem from the one that I have. Creating an assortment of rooms connected in random ways is pretty easy for me. The problem, as you note, is making the space engaging, making it make sense, making the connections logical but also interesting, etc.
But I do think random generation is a great way to juice your creativity! Getting external input that you then have to fit your ideas into often produces better results than just trying to create on a blank slate.
My most common random tools are roll tables for generating dungeon rooms and features. Worlds Without Number is the first book I reach for for most random tables, and it has some pretty solid tables for generating rooms, features in the rooms, connections, etc. I also have a bunch of tables saved from OSR blogs for generating interesting traps or dungeon features. Honestly just rolling for the number of exits a space has is one of the simplest ways to force myself to think creatively. When the dice tell me a bedroom has six exits, it means I need to re-evaluate what that bedroom is doing and I probably need to create some unusual exits.
I will use geomorphs sometimes. These are basically bespoke little fragments of dungeon created to be shuffled and combined randomly. Dyson Logos has a bunch of these, and I know @imsobadatnicknames2 has a bunch as well. These are good for creating a bunch of interesting connections and clever tiny bits that are great for finding interesting uses for. I've never used these to generate a whole dungeon, but for small fragments I really like them. I also have a set of them handy when I run a sandbox campaign in case the players somehow end up in a dungeon I didn't prep for at all.
Now, if you do want to use a randomly generated layout, whether from some tool, a dice generator, geomorphs, whatever, I have some advice for making sense of it: embrace the second occupant effect.
It's very common in dungeons that the people who built the dungeon and the current occupants are not the same group. It's an orcish ruin occupied by dwarves, it's an ancient temple being used as a bandit hideout, it's a wizard's keep overrun by demons, etc. The question that a random layout is going to have you asking is, "Why is this constructed this way?" and it's perfectly okay for the answer to be, "there's nobody left who knows." What was this big room with seven entrances built for? Well, nobody knows, but the goblins living there are using it as a dining hall.
If you're designing using this approach, you don't need an answer for every space. You can instead approach it the same way its new occupants did. Take it for granted that this is the space that exists, how would the new occupants use it? That weird room off to the side that's a pain to access? Well, who knows what it was built for, but it's cold storage now. This weird thoroughfare makes a perfectly good guard checkpoint. This big hole in the floor might have been used for casting spells at some point, but now it's a garbage dump. In this way, it's easy to come up with what rooms are now that doesn't require you to answer what a room was built for.
Using this approach, you still want to have good answers for what a room's original purpose was some of the time. If the space just never makes sense, players will stop trying to engage with it logically, and that's a big loss. Plus, using this effect most effectively, you get a lot of value out of knowing the previous purpose of a room. It can be easy for every kitchen to feel similar, but a kitchen that's been built on what used to be a foundry is instantly more interesting and easier to get creative with. But you get to pick and choose the parts of a random layout that look interesting, or that you have an easy time answering for, and make those the parts where the original purpose shines through. And then in the spaces where you're left saying, "What is with this snarl of hallways?" you can just have the answer be, "it's a mystery. Scholars theorize it served a ritual purpose."

Plot: In the aftermath of The Blip and her boyfriend Bucky turning to dust, Y/N finds a voicemail from him... sent the day she lost him. Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Female!Reader Warnings: Mentions of death, or at least Bucky is presumed dead (obviously we know Bucky isn't dead but we all thought he was after Infinity War, let's be honest) and grief. And of course, some angst. But as always, if I miss any triggers, please let me know. Notes: This is for @whumptober Day 24. I used the prompt: "Goodbye Note". I also combined it with the @angstober "The Day I Lost You" prompt. I was once again sad and listening to PVRIS as I wrote this, so now you can be too :)
Not beta'd, so any mistakes are my own.
Stepping over the threshold into her apartment, Y/N drops her bags to the floor with a tired groan. The rain still pounds down outside, the sound echoing through the building. As a personal assistant to Tony Stark himself, Y/N’s working life is extremely busy. And since The Blip, she’s busier than ever, constantly being pulled into meetings with little time for herself. For the past few weeks, she’s been away at a conference with the surviving Avengers, working on a solution to The Blip. This is the first time she’s had to breathe in about a year. And that also means it’s the first time she’s been home since it all happened, since her boyfriend and some of her best friends turned to dust.
And she’s never felt so alone.
Of course, Y/N knows that dating an Avenger, let alone the Winter Soldier himself, comes with its own risk. Especially the risk he may never come home. But although it’s always been at the back of her mind, seeping into her every thought whilst he’s away on a mission… Bucky came back safe so many times that the worry dissipated. Foolishly, she believed he was indestructible, and that he’d always come home to her.
Until he didn’t.
Tears spring at her eyes then, and she furiously tries to wipe them away. She’s done enough grieving over the last year. Enough hoping that he’s coming back, only to end up disappointed. There’s only so much pain you can take before you can’t go on anymore. And Y/N crossed that line a long time ago.
The red light on her answering machine blinks back at her, and she sighs, rubbing her temples and closing her eyes, hoping that when she opens them, the light will be gone. But no matter how hard she tries, it’s still there, and she groans. The last thing she wants to hear right now is more “I’m sorry to hear about Bucky” and “We understand how much it hurts, but he’s in our thoughts.” Nobody will ever understand how much it hurts. Even the other Avengers. 
Because Bucky isn’t just in her thoughts. He’s everywhere. He still occupies the empty space in her bed, his laughter still fills the halls, his singing echoing from the shower. He’s the whisper in the wind, the faint scent of his cologne whenever she enters a room, and that still clings to her clothing like a safety blanket. He’s the shiver up her spine, the faint feeling of a hand holding hers, an arm wrapped around her waist.
It’s like he never even left.
Y/N presses the button, bracing herself for the onslaught of messages to come. “Hey sweetheart. It’s me-” As soon as she hears her mother’s voice, Y/N deletes the message. She’ll deal with her and her incessant questions later. She means well, of course, they all do. But the last thing she wants is to be pestered, reminded of her pain over and over again. They may mean well, but there’s nothing they can do. There’s nothing anyone can do. The other message is boring, a message about her car’s extended warranty that gets deleted almost immediately.
But when she hears the voice in the next message, she collapses to her knees. “Hey doll.” Bucky speaks. It's the first time she’s heard his voice - actually heard it - since he left. As soon as she hears him speak, she can see the smile on his face, and hear the laughter in his tone. Her presence always brought a smile to Bucky's face, even on his worst days. Because he loves her. …Loved her.
Hearing Bucky’s voice again, so soon after losing him, causes all her pent-up emotions to erupt, a year's worth of pain spilling over. As the first of her sobs break through, Bucky’s voice continues. “Just checking in to see how you are and keep you updated. Steve and the others are here…”
“Why didn’t I answer the call? I could’ve stopped them!”
“... and we have a game plan now to stop this asshole. Before you know it, I’ll be back home in New York with you, my favourite girl.” Her chest heaves, and she sobs even harder. “I miss you so much, though. The guys keep pestering me about it, but I don’t care. I love you, Y/N, and I want the entire world to know.” That sends her over the edge. A painful, anguished wail rips through her, the sound filling the room. Y/N’s full body shakes, and she clutches at her chest. “I hope you’re doing well and staying out of trouble.” Bucky chuckles. “Keep me updated. But I’ll see you soon enough, anyway.” 
“Why didn’t I answer? Why didn’t I answer?!”
“I better go, Steve’s shouting at me. Think the mission is about to start.” 
Y/N sits up, trying to grab the phone to dial Bucky’s number and tell him she’s still here, that she still loves him. Hoping that he’s there on the other side, waiting for her.
“Bye doll. See you soon. Love you always.” And then, the line goes dead, the dull beeping noise going right through her. Picking up the phone, she dials Bucky’s number, holding it to her ear as her heart pounds.
“Please… please…” she begs. "Just answer me Bucky... please."
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
“Hey! This is Bucky. I can’t talk right now, and I don’t really know how these things work.” He chuckles, the sound forming a small glimpse of warmth in her belly, and Y/N even laughs softly too. She was there when he recorded that message, her best efforts to teach him the wonders modern technology still not sinking in. Not that it matters now, though. None of it does. She just wants him back. “So I guess if you leave a message, I’ll call you back?”
And he always called her back. Even if it was a day, a week or even a month late. Bucky always called her back. But he won’t call back. Not this time. 
She tries to speak, to say something, anything, to Bucky's voicemail. If there's even a chance he could hear it, she wants him to know how much she loves him, and how much she misses him. Yet she can't say anything through her tears.
When the call disconnects, Y/N sinks to her knees, huddling into a ball as the sobs rack through her entire body. 
She’s alone again. 
And she always will be.

"Honestly, I just wanted some quiet time away from everyone."
Not the smartest thing to say after waltzing into your pseudo-doctor's office with claims of aches and pains hanging around from a recon mission the previous night ("must be a pulled muscle, Doc, can ya take a look?"). 2BDamned is less than pleased, evident in how his brows furrow when he ceases his makeshift checkup. He's almost relieved to not be the only one occasionally needing a break and quieter company, but.. "Are you even actually in any pain, Sanford? Or did you just want to come to my office for the atmosphere?"
"The atmosphere." Sanford's lack of shame isn't quite surprising, though it remains moderately frustrating nonetheless. He waves his arm at 2BDamned without so much as a flinch. "Y'know how the guys get."
"You're unbelievable," 2BDamned huffs, putting appropriate space between them and turning his eyes elsewhere. "You're lucky I didn't just tell you to grow up and get over a muscle injury, you know that, right?"
"Sure do."
"Your solution was coming to see me?" following a few moments of Sanford's desired quiet. "To your little.. aspiration for silence."
"Was it overkill?" Sanford asks, huffing out a laugh between his words. He crosses his (perfectly uninjured, mind you) arms as he settles in more, almost looking prepared to lounge on 2BDamned's exam table. When he's met with a nod, the snickers don't stop. "What can I say, Doc. I know how ya get. It ain't make me wanna blow myself up so bad."
2BDamned watches him make himself comfortable, staring him down with a scrutinizing gaze. Really. There of all places. "Tell me, then. Enlighten me, even. How 'do I get'?"
Sanford has to think of how to string the words together, "Get in no certain way.. straightforward, allat."
"How.. clerical." 2BDamned can't disagree with it, but calling him blunt is about the same as calling the sky red. He waves his hand in a circle in an attempt to encourage Sanford to continue. "I have more brains than bloodlust and lung infection in the next room combined, yes."
Sanford's concentrated expression relaxes to amusement. He chuckles, shaking his head. "Just like that, see? Rare find nowadays, what ya said 'bout my solution."
It makes a scant amount of sense. As much as 2BDamned wants to pretend it doesn't. "At least ask like a normal person and don't let me think you got injured. If you want to play a reasonable party together, act like one.."
It wasn't for a lack of sense that he lied, it was due to understanding the nature of 2BDamned better than that. There is no asking to visit one another even in a group that toes the line of tight-knit, and all of Sanford's alone time is effectively Deimos' as well, both a blessing and a curse. 2BDamned scarcely opened the door to his personal time even if it was pounded on, so Sanford wouldn't waste his energy. He'd just put down the right cards to get it to open on its own.
He tilts his head. "What'd I tell ya 'bout rare finds?"
Sanford is a lot of things, but 2BDamned feels fairly confident that shameless isn't anywhere on that list. Despite being part of a much larger picture, he had a tendency to be absorbed in himself without even realizing. He would never ask for peace and space, too worried over what Deimos would feel or how he would look. He'd rather take the easy way out, and in trying to avoid himself, walk directly into the funhouse mirror.
2BDamned scoffs, "Foolish me for thinking someone else could exude brains and brawn simultaneously."

so its the middle of the night and i'm rereading one of the earlier sections of the yuri zine and i come back to this quote, "sometimes when looking at my self is as painful as staring directly into the sun, my solution has typically been to study the reflection in the moon" and it all just sort of hit me. holy hell. inside mari. to study yourself through another pair of eyes, in her case. this language unlocked so many different ways of understanding inside mari that i just started scribbling on my ipad until next thing i knew an hour had passed and i ran out of white space and how did i even get here? anyways. here is the batshit insane looking page where i dumped all the thoughts i'm going to attempt to organize them here? this image is just so funny to me now i thought i should include it.

the horror of Looking at your own self.
a lot of yuri zine talked about reading and interacting with yuri as a form of self identification. and how those bring up both good feelings (gender validating) and bad feelings (confronting yourself and your regret and your shame for whatever reasons you may have). both as a consumer of this media but also found within the characters themselves in the stories we read. considering how the big reveal of the entire story is about how. in an attempt to identify herself, mari was forced to truly look at herself. something she literally couldn't handle. throughout the zine, the authors all in one way or another touch upon the idea of how uncomfortable it is to confront yourself. to look at yourself. its shown through jennifer and needy's relationship in jennifer's body, which i hadn't thought about but one of the essays in this zine explains it so well. it's shown through when readers see too much of themselves in certain characters. this feeling of discomfort exists both in and out of the texts we talk about. and how this sort of leads into the understanding that yuri is "the relationship to absence, to projection." the yuri that of inside mari is how she absents herself as a way to allow herself to love Yori (to love girls in general). (i want to emphasize how in allowing herself, it implying the norm for her was denying herself, stopping herself, punishing herself for feeling the way she did) because the whole time, the mari we see is just mari the whole time. not komori body swapped into mari's body. the mind warping mental gymnastics she goes through to live this sort of delusion allows her to be a boy who's just trapped in a girl's body. it allows her own self to love girls and accept this because. it's not mari thinking these things, it's komori who is a boy so. it's allowed. this also speaks to Shuzo Oshimi’s thoughts on being a girl. the ways mari goes about identifying her self while at the same time struggling with the mere act of Looking at her self is so yuri. i'm going to come back to this after i talk about Identity for a little bit hold on.
what is it that mari yearns for? what is it about gender?
mari's fragmented identity splits into three parts: fumiko, mari, and komori. her attachment to komori, the male identity she takes on stems from her hetero-patriarchal understanding of the world. she envies him for being able to experience sexuality and love girls in ways she feels she can't. but she ultimately abandons this identity too and exists as something separate from all three. or something that combines them all? the story ends with her alive and finally happy with herself. her attachment to komori's identity is less about his masculinity or maleness so to speak, but what she really desires is to love other girls in the specific (romantic, sexual) way he is allowed to in this society. her yearning is lesbian. i read her experience playing with gender not as her struggling with her own gender identity, but instead i felt that her beef was with the social performance of it all. i think she's a girl who doesn't feel connected to the daily practices and rituals that signal femininity. explaining why she sort of.. forgets how to do makeup and dress herself when she exists as the clueless komori inside mari's body. she uses him to liberate herself from these expectations. maybe i'm just full of shit. maybe her gender is just lesbian after all. another essay in the yuri zine talks about how yearning is gay. yearning is queer and yearning is lesbian. that yearning isn't limited to wanting to be with someone, but wanting to be someone. to live life the way they do. which hey. is literally what mari ends up doing in this story. what she yearns for is a reality that cannot exist (or rather, one that she cannot confront/reconcile with yet) she cannot look at herself, so she absents herself in order to allow herself to pursue her own desire. she felt like she couldn't pursue her desire in her current self, in her current standing as a girl in society.
what does it mean to feel like a person? to feel human?
i need to watch that interview everyone talks about "yuri made me human" because i already feel that truth in my core but i don't even know what the hell they're talking about in that interview. from the zine, "is the fantasy of yuri about finding a way to become a person. when you don't feel like one?" yes. but. what does it mean to feel like a person? in mari's case, which person? her First person? the one that died with her grandmother and replaced with a new name and identity by a mother she cannot understand or bond with? her Second person? mari? the person she grows to hate? the one that is forced to perform these ritualistic practices that signal femininity but is never allowed to desire it for herself? her Third person? komori? the depressed pathetic sexually frustrated hikikomori who is too stupid to see how good he has it* that he doesn't have to fend off boys who only objectify her? that he can have a girlfriend and kiss her and hold her hand in public without punishment? the komori that ultimately broke under the heavy weight of the truth that is not her. she is not him. she is no one for a while. yuri is everything and yuri is nothing. in fact, when mari is in that coma or whatever, yori desperately wants her back again, wants her awake, and she begs “don’t disappear” until she wakes up into someone again. someone for yori. but most importantly, someone for herself (the first time i read this, i felt sort of disappointed? that yori and mari didn’t get to live together forever but those feelings didn’t last long... i don’t actually want that for them. in fact i actually really love that they were able to reconcile their feelings for each other and also end on a note where yori goes to school and mari seems to actually be happy and secure with her own self) anyways. she struggles to connect to her fractured identities until through her growth as a character she not only starts feeling like a person but becoming one, probably for the first time.
inside mari is fascinating to look at and unpack from a yuri pov. i loved thinking about how this too was yuri, that she envies komori for his ability to pursue and love women. the way she projected onto him. the way she wanted something nonexistent and intangible. the way she yearned through imagining she existed as something other than herself. the way she shattered when faced with herself. the way she existed not as a participant, nor an observer. the way she loved yori so much she became everyone and no one.
in conclusion please read yuri zine and please also read yaoi zine 1 and 2 they are genuinely so good. bless the minds of everyone who worked on these.. the yaoi yuri theorists i look up to.... there's no real conclusion to this ramble. i hate conclusions. i'm done. good night...

— There are Four ways to travel to the city:
╰Number One: Land— Although it isn’t the fastest and safest way to travel to the city, it gets the job done.
╰Number Two: Boat— This is the second best way to getting to the city in one piece(Luffy? That u?). Because of the harbor this is the popular and cheaper option to travel.
╰Number Tree: By Air— Wait, what? There is a way to get to the city by air? Since when??? Well ladies and gentlemen, I present to you…my version of a Hot Air Balloon!🎉 Now you all must be wondering, how in Teyvat do you have a Hot Air Balloon? Simple solution, really. The Jade Chamber.
Yuri: Be warned, the explanation is a little long but worth it if you stick with it. If you don’t want to read it and accept the reality of this madness, read the next bullet. Just know, something won’t make sense.
— Now, you need to know three things: Plaustrite, Adepti Sigils, and Wonder Core.
╰ The Jade Chamber uses something called Sunset Vermillion to levitate in the air; in reality, Sunset Vermillion is just a bigger chunk of material called Plaustrite. Plaustrite is an elemental mineral known for its anti-gravity properties. Objects built with this material float, like Xiao lanterns.
╰ In the Jade Chamber there is a control compartment, its use is to allow aerial movement of the Chamber. To build a control for a flying object you’ll need Adepti sigils and Wonder Core.
Yuri: “So, the Hot Air Balloon uses all of these?” No! I’m making my life difficult by World building and lore 😃
╰The Hot Air Balloon uses Pure Plaustrite, meaning that there is little to nothing of any other component except the Anti-gravity one. And because Adepti sigils are a Liyue only thing, I decided to come up with Anralyte! Which is basically a talisman done by a mage from the smallest elite academy in the city. Now if you combine Anralyte and celestial technology, you get an Airship!
???: Wow. All of that, just for an Airship….
???:*sights with immense disappointment*
╰Number Four: The Traveler— and of course. You have the Traveler. With powers greater than their own body can handle. They have a waypoint unlocked…! .…What a pain in the arse.🙃
— The architecture of the city was inspired by German and French architecture. I also took inspiration from Greek architecture.
— The city is located on a mountainous region that borders the ocean, although the majority of the city is on one mountain.
— At the mountain top is where the middle and core sections lay.
— There is a river that runs from the top of the mountain all the way down and merges with the ocean. Expect bridges all around the city. The water that runs down the mountain is clean, so it is safe for consumption. Because of the purity of the water many citizens usually don’t bathe or eat the animals of the river, deeming it as holy.
╰Some even say that this river water comes directly from Celestia.
╰There is also another river on the left hand of the city. It also connects with the ocean, it’s not to be confused as the holy river.
—The citizens are generally very friendly and open to foreigners visiting.
— The law enforcers are called “Up-holders”. You can see them all around the city, even on farm land. They take their jobs seriously and are not to be messed with. But, they are very helpful for any situation.
╰To be an Up-holder you have to first become a knight and then graduate from the ‘Tridalia Academy’.
—The Tridalia Academy was founded by Vimlar Tridalia, who hails from the same race as Klee and Alice; a race blessed by longevity. He is a high, if not the highest, in the Up-holder ranks. The Tridalia Academy is primarily focused on training young knights to become the law enforcers they need to be. This means intensive battle training, and law classes.
╰Because of the high requirements to become an enforcer, citizens respect Up-holders. Very often you’ll see these young soldiers get free food and get complimented throughout the city.
╰Fun fact: Vimlar has been serving under her Grace for over five hundred years. So your best shot at finding him would be in the Core section…. And you didn’t hear this from me.…but, I heard he likes to take naps on rooftops near rivers, so keep your eyes alert! Who knows, maybe you’ll have to catch the general before he falls into the water!
—The Up-holders have smaller versions of Airships for faster travel.
— Throughout the city are scattered shrines and churches dedicated to each of the seven Archons and “her Grace”.
╰Because she isn't one of the seven, nor did she fought in the Archon war, the statues of her Grace were carefully thought out and are few in numbers.
— The outer section is located at the bottom of the mountain along with the city’s harbor.
╰Majority of the trade of the city is done in this section. Meanwhile major negotiations that involve the well-being of the citizens are done in the middle section.
╰The river that I mentioned is on the left hand of the city, is where most boats go and dock.
— The city’s biggest export is Pure Plaustrite.
╰Fun fact: Because of Pure Plaustrite you’ll often find floating islands in the region.
Lore:
— During the Archon war, The Divine City was the only safe sanctuary in Teyvat, as it was under the protection of Celestia. If anyone dared to invade the city, Celestia themselves would come down and destroy the enemy and all of its people.
— Note this down…. Her Grace descended to Teyvat roughly a thousand years before the Cataclysm(The Fall of Khaenri'ah).

I think what has become evident is that many people don't really have any genuine courage, and that's partly driven by a culture that treats violence and courage as synonymous with each other, but also just because we as a society aren't willing to have any conversations about our deeply concealed cowardice.
Cowardice is at the root of a lot of the weird contradictory behavior we keep seeing, but the problem is that we aren't willing to actually unpack and think about what it actually means to be cowardly/courageous/violent.
I think this might be a bit of a weird thought, but I think our tendency to demonize cowardice ironically makes it impossible for us to actually properly understand and manage it. We demonize cowardice (and not without reason), but the drawback I think is that we end up not being willing to recognize that cowardice isn't something to be inherently ashamed of. And because of that, we can't find healthier and more effective ways to manage our fearful thoughts, and instead descend into conspiracy and psychological projection.
So instead we get these bizarre situations where people project their deeply rooted fear of the horrors to come onto (metaphorically) faceless vigilantes, hoping and flailing for violence to save them from the consequences of their own cowardice, or even just simply feeling fear and cowardice, all the while trying to frame it as courage to avoid the shameful truth.
People's fixation on vigilantism as a "solution" and "hope for a new revolution" feels exactly like that. They're terrified and afraid of the horrors to come, but rather than process and understand that, that their own cowardice in stopping the problem earlier with a less violent solution could have prevented this, a combination of cultural expectations and their own unwillingness to process that means that they instead hide and cower behind violence in hopes that the latter can somehow resolve the dissonance and avoid the painful truth that they need to actually face.
