Tim AU where he’s dead as hell

Tim Drake died at age 10 while chasing Batman. Tim Drake dies to a gunshot wound to the abdomen from a bullet gone astray (that goon can honestly die with him cause that was such a bitch move).

He wakes up at home, cold and alone. He blinks, confused. He doesn’t feel dead although he’s…cold. His camera is still hanging off his neck and the high ceilings of the Drake manor offer no explanation.

“Okay,” Tim says, “okay.”

He stands up, head dizzy and body aching. His abdomen in particular hurts quite a bit and when he pulled his shirt up, there was a circular shaped scar. It was rigid and a little red on the edges.

Tim, being a ten year old, simply shrugged and went about his day. He continued school even though the people around him ignored him. He still did his work and the confused look on his teachers face was always a little weird.

And after a week break, Tim leaves the house to stalk the bats again. He finds that when he hides in the shadows (he learned from watching the bats do this) he basically disappears. Like, literally disappears! It makes snapping these pictures so much easier!

Then, the day his parents return from their dig, Tim is very startled the weirdness of his parents. They’re sniffly and just barely holding it together. They keep ignoring Tim when he tries to ask what’s wrong too!!

And suddenly, when there’s a gala held in his own name and the whispers of condolences, does he realize what’s happing.

“Okay. I’m…dead,” he nods as he stares at his sobbing mother, “dead-dead.”

Tims eyes wander to Mr. Wayne and watches as the man frowns and tries to comfort his grieving mother. It’s a bitter sight.

Now, I’d assume that Tim is…a little numb. He accepts being dead weirdly well and just decides to live as normally as possible(he’s in denial). This time, he pretends he’s alive but he doesn’t actually interact with living beings and their world.

Okay, here’s a new thing

Because Tim is dead, he can wander Gotham with zero issues and thus, starts spying and listening in on rouges. He captures photos still(of course) and suddenly, he stumbles upon a big plan that would kill literally everyone. It’s set to happen in, let’s say, a year from when he finds out

Queue Tim finally deciding to do something that could actually help ppl. He prints the pictures he took(how? I’m not sure. He’s just built different I guess) and he starts leaving them in Batman’s, Nightwings, and Robins patrol routes.

One day, Tim just goes “fuck it” and shows up to the manor. He hides in the shadows and subconsciously allows himself to blend in with them. He’s nervous okay??

Dick is walking down the corridor, photograph in hand and Tim is just so excited! He’s also worried and stressed and dead which he totally forgot about. He scares the shit out of Dick which in turn scares the shit out of Tim and he scurries into the shadows again.

Later, Dick tells the others about the encounter

“Its eyes were glowing pure white!! With really sharp teeth and holy shit—“

“Language.”

“—and holy cow it was terrifying!!”

While Tim is a little sad that Dick(his Robin!!) called Tim, a 10(11?) year old, scary, it does spark a new idea.

Thus, Tim decides to play into the exaggerated narrative Dick had set in motion. The shadows like him and play along with his trickery. He leads the bats with glowing, blinking eyes and soft whispers.

And finally, three days before Gotham is to be exploded, Bruce figures it out and the Batfam save the day.

Happy ending! Yay!

Tim probably haunts them and because he’s been dead for so long (and as a child), he literally doesn’t know how to live anymore.

The bats have to coax him out of his cryptid, lurker like mindset and now they have 10(is he 11? 12? Maybe 15 now?) year old Tim Drake whose now permanently family.

Somehow, for being the shortest month, February felt long. This is partly work chaos and partly … current events. (I've just spent a lot of time staring slack-jawed at the news.)

Astute followers will notice I didn't post a review this month. That's because the only book I really felt like saying anything about—The Prague Cemetery—was excellent in many ways but also something I cannot in good conscience recommend, at least in this current political climate, to a generalized audience. It's a brilliant take-down of antisemitic, authoritarian, conservative, cis-white-male thinking (yay) but narrated by someone who is all of those things and simply in it for the money (urf). Not the funnest thing to have read shortly after a certain inauguration but probably good for me in the long run.

And sure, I could've reviewed the third Emily Wilde book (but how to, without spoiling?) or Tokyo Ueno Station (sad, doing some smart things within its genre) or My Kind of Trouble (gender-swapped Music Man!) or any of the others but there wasn't much to say about any of those and/or I didn't have the energy.

In more personal news, I've been writing again, at least a little! I'm maybe a scene and a half from being done the chapter I've been on since November and for one of those scenes I can cannibalize something I cut months ago. Then it's a matter of wrapping things up, so I think five chapters left, maybe less. This could be my year! I've done better blocking out all the current events stuff, which usually stymies my writing, on an emotional level than I usually do. I hope that can continue.

I've also been trying my best to boycott US products and companies, though I'm not doing so great with, like, social media and email and also I probably shouldn't have bought Aftermarket Afterlife but in my defense, Seanan McGuire is a good egg and deserves royalties. For whatever that's worth. I've been helped in the not-buying-of-books by having no other books in need of buying, and also library holds! So many! I have been spoiled, which probably means I'll have to wait another month or more before anything else comes in for me. (Have I added, like, eight books to my holds queue though? Maybe.)

Thoughts About The "Thoughts About The Expanse" Panel

***spoilers, natch***

This was one of the sessions I actively wanted to go to but Managing Worldcon Life got in the way. (If I've reconstructed correctly - never certain!- this session was on the same day as the big Worldcon philharmonic concert and immediately before it? If that's right - in theory, it should have been possible to do both, one straight after the other, BUT in reality, this hour got eaten up in queueing time.

So, delighted to find it in the replays and an early priority to listen to - and very glad I did, if mainly to feel the waves of joy and affection rising as I was reminded how VERY MUCH I loved this show*.

*Yes, I know that The Expanse is also an impressive series of novels and novellas as well, but I have mostly - not read these. Yet. They are firmly IN my TBR but as with Worldcon, life has so far Intervened.

In fact almost all of the next part is CM's pitch for why The Expanse is the greatest TV SF series of the 21st century // worldcon Aug 2024

Her pitch revolved around the treatment of sexuality and gender:

This show is the most progressive recent SFF show, particularly in the way it queers gender and sexuality in ways we rarely see on TV.

The power is how it normalises and embeds its treatment. It has poly relationships – almost unheard of in commercial productions. Holden’s family of origin. It’s not just about the tax breaks. Drummer’s crew of space pirates. More complex than a traditional love triangle (tho Draomi is a canon relationship YAY.) This is a show that consistently queers and interrogates expected gender roles. Bobby Draper: not sexualised, not all-powerful, seeks help. Peaches: classic tale of angry superhero on a revenge trip who earns her redemption. Drummer: uber-competent but also with brittle edges.

The exception to the excellence is Julie Mao – the fetishised object of a middle aged white guy’s obsession. CM comments that book one was pretty standard male-oriented SF – very blokey, testosterone-fuelled – but complimented the two writers for how they responded to receiving that feedback, gender flipping certain characters from book two onwards and allowing the story to unfold as it did.

CM's summary of what she loves about the show is made with reference to the final three episodes of S5:

The story around Naomi’s resilience – her desperate determination to save the Roci from Inaros’s trap – we don’t breathe until she does again – amazing engineering ingenuity – while she’s trying to send a signal and break the trap. We have Amos and Peaches and their hugely daring escape from Earth. Avasarala’s coup. Drummer’s torn loyalties – but we’ve also got: how you best deal with your sex pest cast member by writing them out in a way that respects the character but conclusively rules out a return. Those episodes exemplify the most striking and my favourite things about the series.

There was really only one point I *really* wanted to grab from the rest of the session and I *believe* it was lawyer Wes Rist who made it:

Noting the benefit to the quality of the story - its complexity, its ambiguity, the kinks away from expected narratives - that they had several “goes” at it. The role playing game. The books (and novellas filling out the world between the main stories). And then the show.

Finishing up by I'm listing out the panel members, incl their varied backgrounds, along with a sort-of-summary of what they said about themselves. To me, this is synecdochal (??) of the identity and value-set of the series and the quality of its appeal i.e. appeals to and relevant to, well, lots of people but almost certainly including:

people who are interested in politics and/or international relations and/or Marxism and/or debating between different philosophies;

people who like hard science and realistic space battles - slash - pouring of liquids in zero G;

people who want to imagine human futures across and within the solar system and the social - slash - economic - slash - politics impacts and implications involved in becoming a bi-planetary species and/or a multi-space location capitalist construct; and

people who want to imagine alternative gendered futures.

[Also, people who think about the Roman empire alot. Perhaps daily.]

These, then, are the panellists:

Sven von Vittorelli is a conservation biologist from Germany, who told the room that his day job is often filled with frustration, with the sense of coming up against the boundaries of what's possible, and so chooses to enrich his life through engaging with science fiction.

[Writing - he's working on the first novel in a hard SF series, which appealed to me immediately because it namechecks Shackleton in the title, Shackleton Ridge. And as a fan - he won me over again by naming Firefly and Battlestar Galactica as series he loved on the way to becoming a fan of The Expanse.]

Wes Rist is an international human rights lawyer whose day job involves working on genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity - clearly, seriously heavy, and also, deeply relevant to the political context, themes and developments of The Expanse series.

[He clarified, of course, that his views expressed here, are personal - he's working in some capacity for the US government but not speaking for his employer HERE.]

Bob Hranek has a tech background, initially for the US Airforce (5 yrs), then for the US min of defence (35 years) focused on aerospace systems - he pointed out that any views expressed were his own and not those of his employer (prompting the same from WR).

He joked that given his background he would generally, in the context of The Expanse, be expected to be representing [Evil! Tech! And Weapons! Giant!] Protogen.

Caroline Mersey is a cos player and book nerd and organises lots of book events in her spare time, including the 'Super Relaxed Fantasy Bookclub' - every second Tuesday in London. [Must attempt to go...]

And the panel moderator, Michael Pea, is senior writer at Friends of Comic Con and self-declared *uberfan* of The Expanse.

I hope you know I am LIVING for your kotorblogging. as someone who's been playing this game since I was in the single digit age range it's genuinely a treasure to see people with media literacy enjoying it now, even with its completely outdated mechanics and graphics. I’ve gotten into it bc of @scrollofgrease who has been replaying and also purchased both games for me as a gift! I’m starting with kotor ii so I can keep up with what they’re telling me but I’m told it’s fun to play the twists backwards anyway so 👀

We will see if I keep kotorposting here or if I feel bad for my dragon age mutuals and move it to a sideblog—I normally don’t for other games but kotor feels like a continuous liveblogging experience and it’s not like I’m done with dragon age. So. We shall see

Aaaah i love my papa so much sososo much. I was thinking about when he play cello, i want him to get more cello scenes.. i think he could sing lullabies if he wanted, and it would sound very nice..

papa is also very good at making breakfasts, i usually miss breakfast but its impossible to do so when papa makes the pancakes in cute shapws..

he also makes sure we have consistent parent-child time.. even if he is very busy he makes sure we can go to the docks to see boats or go to opera house to watch plays.. i always dress in lolita for it, he doesnt like being so flashy but if hes in a good mood he might dress elegantly too.

i am sad when people think i like him to be edgy, they just dont understand there is a softer side to him! Hes not so evil you know? He brings me to aquarium too! He doesnt know much about cutesy media but he likes my melody and usahana, sometimes he says i should do a coord based on them.

he even watches cartoons and movies with me even though he prefers to read, he is just so nice.. i love my papa so much! I also read the books he likes .. or atleast the not so complicated-philosophy ones.

papa also tries learning words in my mother tongue so he can call me silly things. It sounds a little funny because of the accent but its very comforting.. so nice!!! I try with russian but i can only say some simple words.. its ok, atleast we both know english to a decent degree..

i like too when papa does my hair, he doesnt do much other than braids or pigtails maybe but his touch is so gentle i just love it so much. Even better if hes just brushing my hair before bedtime.

so sorry i ramble so much im just so fond of him .. . Its like my only self ship and its familial attachment so its really important to me.

also i personally love when you add commentary to the asks, its fun!!!
