Still thinking about the first time I met Jared, he fucking introduced himself to me. Like???? I paid $250 for that photo op, of course I know who he is, I know his name is Jared (he was just being polite for the sake of being polite! 😭) I was quite literally trembling in his presence (overwhelmed by his utter beauty- I was rendered speechless), I was just a teenager, clearly overcome by the pressure of the moment- meeting my favorite celebrity of all time and I was so obviously nervous- he puts his hands on my shoulders, looks me in the eyes and says “Hi, I’m Jared,” and I’m like giggling “I know!” And I said “I’m Kayla,” and he says “alright big hug, Kayla?” And I nod and he squeezes me so hard I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head. And my face was right against his soft sweater and he smelled sooo good, like a luxurious beach, and after the hug he has the audacity to say “thank you, darlin.” I’m not kidding when I say I had to cry for 3 hours straight after that moment. Random convention bystanders kept checking on me, asking if I was okay because I could not stop sobbing and I had to explain “I’m okay, I just had the most magical moment ever with Jared and I can’t calm down because it went so perfectly and I was so worried something would go wrong but it was everything I wanted it to be and more.”

“What the -that’s amazing, Son!” says Joël, abandoning the stove to stride across the room and grab Jared in a bear hug. “I didn’t even know you were taking your test today!”

“I didn’t want to tell you in case I failed,” says Jared, his face flushed with pride and pleasure. “Can I get a car now? I’ve got a bit of money saved up-“

“A bit of money,” snorts Saffron. “How much money, exactly?”

“A couple of hundred,” says Jared.

“A couple of hundred isn’t even enough for a decent bike, you dork,” says Saffron.

“I know that, but I can borrow the rest of the money and pay you back when I get a proper job, can’t I Dad?” says Jared. “Or…or you can buy me a car for my birthday!“  

“Slow down, Jar. I know you’re excited, but there’s plenty of time to decide what car you’re going to get,” says Joël. “And you probably ought to have a bit more driving practice first. I mean, passing the test is a fantastic start, but nothing beats experience-“

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Anyway, Saffy said she’s going to shout us all dinner tonight to celebrate. How cool is that? Can we go to the Chinese Take Out King? Please, Dad?”

“But I made Spaghetti Bolognese,” says Joël, his smile faltering. “You love my Spaghetti Bolognese.”

“Saffy said you can freeze it,” says Jared.

“Oh, she did, did she?” says Joël. “And what about your mother? She doesn’t finish work till 9 pm. I’m sure she won’t want to turn up to a restaurant tired and grumpy and wearing her uniform-“

“She’ll be fine,” says Saffron. “Anyway, Jared deserves to have a special dinner. Why are you being such a vibe killer?”

“That’s unfair. I’m just trying to be practical, Saff,“ says Joël, when he feels his phone vibrate in his pocket. “Hold on,” he says to Jared. “I’ll just take this call and then we’ll talk some more, okay?”

“Whatever,” says Jared, impatiently shifting his weight.

Joël is surprised to see Roy’s name pulsing on the screen.

Hey, dude,” he says. “'sup? How’s Paris?”
