Well, I appreciate that Chris Manheim. Only the problem is that this happens quite a lot for Gabrielle and it's like she never learns from it.

I know she's naive in these first few seasons due to her empathetic nature and giving everyone she comes across the benefit of the doubt but she's not stupid. Her judgement should be a lot better after the first or second time this happens. She should be more suspicious or skeptic. She should be developing on her discernment when it comes to manipulative or deceitful characters like Aidan or Najara. She shouldn't keep falling for the played game over and over because regardless of how much those characters' logic appears to be sound, the fact this keeps happening makes her seem braindead when she's actually an emotionally intelligent and strong character and it just feels completely out of sorts with the rest of her character growth.

So I appreciate the attempt but it doesn't really do anything to change that behavioural pattern and Season 4 is probably the worst for it because at the same time she's on this peaceful retreat and spiritual journey and she's searching for the meaning in her life, this behavioural pattern happens alongside all of that and it's hard to reconcile the consciousness evolution this character is going through with the theme of the episode in regards to her character. It's hard to take what goes on in 'Paradise Found' seriously because when the reveal of Aidan being a spiritual parasite happens, it's like you're just resigned to think "oh, not again...is she really that dumb?"

It's not because of the writing of the character Aidan. His characterization is fine and it does indeed throw you that he is just a villain when the truth is revealed. It's because of how many times this has happened to Gabrielle specifically throughout the whole season. Because of that, it just weakens what should have been a solid story because my reaction to it just turns into "she's duped again? Really?"

The episode is great otherwise. I find 'Paradise Found' to be very psychologically provoking and symbolic of X&G's deep dynamic. But maybe it would have benefitted from being in the aired order line a little earlier or later when Gabrielle hasn't just gone through that situation because it's hard to believe after it's just happened, it'd happen again. Dispelling the audience's disbelief because we're not dummies either and if we're capable of critical thinking, she should be too. Especially when it's proven to be such a weak area in her psyche and she's travelling around with someone who has it as a key strength.

I haven't seen this movie for 20 years. I had the VHS that i somehow got, but I have it to someone as a gift. But I'm watching it now on the remaster version.

Such an underrated movie. Clever little heist movie.

TRIVIA: Bruce Campbell has said that his performance in this and in Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) are two he is most proud of.

Detective Glen Chao: It's BD Wong!!! Shang Li! I'm still salty that they ended making him [episode spoilers] a dirty cop (and by proxy endorsing Mulder & Scully's initial distrust of him) because his point about the divide between ABCs (American born Chinese) and FOBs (Fresh off the boat) really hit hard as someone who is also of Chinese descent and from SF. Deserved better. At least better than getting killed off at the end of the episode.
