my hsmtmts hot takes:

i did not care about rina in the slightest until season 4

seblos (as a ship/couple) is just sort of...there for me. i have no big feelings towards or against them. they're definitely cute, they just don't stay on my mind

though i loved the fashion upgrade that came with it, i hated the way kourtney was written in season 4

i don't care about madlyn that much (i also don't like call it what you want all that much)

season 4's hsm3 songs were not done well (save for can i have this dance, high school musical (the finale), dani's high school musical, and now or never (auditions)) the mixing was bad, they had dara sing too high for i want it all and the singing itself just wasn't that good

^i loved most of the original songs tho

they should've never brought in any of the original hsm actors (save for kaycee and lucas in s1). they made a corbin a twisted version of himself in s3 and the rest of the actors in s4 were so overhyped just for them to barely be there

i actually liked portwell together. they both seemed so happy and i will never forgive the writers for building them up just to ruin them in s3

^speaking of s3 portwell, i will also never forgive this fandom for treating ej like he was some old man preying on a child and treating him like the villain (this is a rant by itself so we'll tackle that some other time)

i've never liked nini (or rini)

the rina hat only works because they got together in the end. imagine if a friend put a secret love confession in a gift for you and you find it after both of you get with someone else. i just find it weird to do that sort of thing when you don't even know if there's mutual feelings

i was on ricky's side during most of the rini discourse (save for him going behind nini's back and getting her a part when she didn't want one and deleting the insta comment)

while i love both jennzzara and jetney, both of them were quickly thrown together at the end with hints that there were crushes in the air for both of them

i will forever hate that they chose frozen as s3's musical. the only songs i liked were what do you know about love and love is an open door

for a show about students putting on a musical, they really just did not show a lot of the musicals

^for s2, i've been giving them a pass because it was during the first year of covid so they were probably limiting how long people could be dancing around without masks (but i was still robbed of belle's yellow dress on ashlyn and ej and biggie playing gaston and lefou)

and finally, this show pairs people up so fast with no real development for either the people or the couple itself. the show really could've benefited from growing their characters without a relationship being the driving force and then worked on building romantic relationships once they figured out what to do with each character

I know it's been too long at this point, but I need a Maddox and Jet spinoff where it starts with Graduation or their final east high drama show (probably in clever cuts and camera angles bc the whole cast wouldn't return or something), and then it cuts to them going to college, her and Jet at separate colleges at first, but then he ends up at her's because of some problem or mix up or whatever where there's no space for him (in enrollment or they got the dorm situation wrong, or the wrong transcripts and they de-accepted him bc of it and can't change it)

and so he ends up rooming with Maddox until they can find a dorm for him, and he has a series of failed dorm attempts where he has to request a change for various weird reasons (either this is a whole episode bit or it's a quick flash through a few of them as he's telling Maddox)

and maddox is doing her AD/crew studying stuff bc that's her major, and obviously ashlyn's there, but we don't see her in the first episode, it's strictly a call where Maddox tells her she made it. but then ashlyn becomes a regular, dropping in because she want's to be around her girlfriend so much, and there's even an episode where Gina has a break from her insane movie scheduling and comes to her dorm and they talk about whatever the thing of the episode is.

or like a mini-series where it's like them doing video interviews of people in East High and Maddox has a microphone and jet holds the camera, but he's always in ever episode physically at least once where he turns the camera around to make a comment.

somehow, maddox only gets lightly sick one day, despite her usually getting very severely sick most of the time. she's not even delirious. it's a miracle

Like, don't get it twisted, she rather dislikes nearly dying every few months, as do most people. And it's nice that she doesn't have to make up work. And she is always going to be the LAST PERSON to be excited about losing any amount of conscious time....

But God is she sooo over this sniffles bullshit. Like, great! She can still go to school and see Ash! But everything hurts and she feels like a slimy faucet. And she's just a little more tired than she should be. And she can't taste anything, and her hearings all messed up.

And the day is sooo loonnggg.... and she still has to do P.E? What's up with that? And she can't even have medicine, stupid allergies....

Look, all she's saying is maybe there's a reason Jet and her spend their less than 100% days unconscious or delirious.

Good news tho, Ash is almost as comfortable as Jet as a pillow, and the views definitely better.

totally fine i love getting asks !!!!!!! this may not be what you're looking for though bc my feelings on this show are deeply deeply deeply conflicted this is gonna be practically an essay.

despite it all i am obsessed w rini. childhood friends to lovers????????? exes to lovers??????????? the whole idea of just for a moment????? i'm a sucker for when the lines blur between feelings and they hit THREE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THAT?????? ive never been over them. it probably makes more sense for ricky's character with letting go and all that and nini not wanting to be held down but. they developed them too well in s1 i fell too hard in love with them. i wonder a lot like if there was a way to keep their relationship andi think there is, the writers just didn't execute it to its fullest. and if they wanted me to ship someone else they didn't do a good job lol they made the rini dynamic too compelling to me just for a moment destroys me every time

2. my season ranking is exactly the same as the release order HJSFDGHJKDSL. ill keep my thoughts on the seasons brief bc if i give all of my thoughts this post will be 700 words long. s1 is so fun with a manageable cast, s2 has some really great bits but suffers from circumstance (pandemic mainly), s3 was also bad circumstance in a way (olivia leaving) but i think they just made bad decision at this point things that were easily avoidable, and i never watched s4 bc everything i heard ab it made me more mad (one exception being ashyln's storyline sounding kinda interesting). also during the s3 finale i got so pissed i literally walked out of the room GHDJSFJGHDS so yeah i didnt watch s4

3. yk i havent really thought ab this but i think it might be nini. i really love olivia's music and it means a lot to me as a south east asian person to see rep like that on tv. ashyln's also pretty great though. least favorite???? probably one of the new kids in s2 from the rival school i truly did not give a shit ab them if im being real. i dont care much for the new characters (though jet and maddox are fun) i am here for my original theater kid friends

4. im interpreting this as original songs so here we go in no order: just for a moment, wondering, i think i kinda you know, rose song, let you go. my rini lover is really showing in this lol but i havent listened to a lot of them in a while so my opinions will prob change if i listen to it again

5. oooooh good question. i cant think of an original song i dislike rn so as a cop out im just gonna say scream lol. i dont blame josh for that bc like why did the director allow that take for the final scream to be used. who allowed the sound mixing to be exported like that. there was so much that couldve been done to make it even slightly better....... and some of it is josh i wont lie (which makes me think what if they cast someone else as the lead like a callback to s1 w ricky taking troy from ej??? for lack of of better phrasing) just baffling decisions all around

6. FAVORITE ONE WAS HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL NO CONTEST. rewatched this and i thought it lined up so so so so so well with the story happening to the characters outside the show it was great. my favorite detail has always been the lockers still having the measurements on it bc it just adds to the high school production vibe. i dont think i disliked any of the productions (though tbf. i cannot remember much from the other productions its been a long time) i love live theater and i dont think i could truly hate any of their productions. maybe ill be proven wrong one day but rn i love live performance too much to hate any of them. im a shrek the musical defender

7. oh boy im gonna have to tag for this. i think its perfectly fine if you ship them im not gonna be pissed or anything but im not a rina fan. i fell hard for rini and i thought portwell was cool in s2 and while im open to most ships in this show, i really couldnt get on board w rina. it might have to do w the fact that i experienced s2 lurking on tumblr and a bunch of people were in the rini tag actively bashing the ship (to be fair. not unwarranted bc the story for rini in s2 makes me sad lol) and i just got really annoyed every time i saw someone putting down rini to put rina up. im not immune to this though ive done the same thing in reverse. rina just never gave me the ship spark and when they pushed them together during s3 my blood pressure rose every single week HDSFJGHSD yeah whenever i see a rina thing for s4 i get irrationally mad but thats just bc of the INSANE writing decisions. like why do you writers keep breaking up couples you just decided to pair up its BAFFLING i dont get it

8. not sure if any are unpopular opinions i have bc im pretty out of the fandom. i guess not liking rina is an unpopular opinion????? i remember when rini was the top ship on ao3 so i was genuinely surprised when i checked today to look for more fics and saw that they were top

9. now that i think ab it i think i really like the s2 soundtrack. i obviously love s1 deeply but if i answer s1 for all of this its gonna be boring. but i think olivia's voice sounds really great in s2 specifically and i think about a lot of the covers all the time. favorite covers are home, the climb, and if i can't love her. havent listened to any of these since i saw s2 but i think ab them often bc theyre that good.

Hsmtmts headcanons i would like to think that the og cast got along with the wildcats

thank you for the ask! I did another post about this a couple of months ago but let's see how my feelings have changed and if I can come up with some new ones...

I also would like to think that the og cast got along with the wildcats! I think that alyson reed (who played Mrs Darbus) became a huge mentor for Gina and helped her out, as well as Ashlyn. I can definitely see Lucas grabeel (aka Ryan) teaching Frankie some jazz squares and teaching him and Seb everything he knows. Monique Coleman, aka Taylor, definitely becomes a huge inspiration for Kourtney and continues to be a really good big sister/second mom for. and I think Bart johnson (who played Troy's dad) became a sort of fatherly figure for all of them, especially for the ones who didn't really get that kind of attention that they require. he takes Emmy out for ice cream all the time before finishing the movie to make up for her being cut and remembers everyone's birthdays.

the show they put on for the spring musical has to be the greatest showman. I stole this idea from someone else and ever since I cannot imagine anything more perfect to send Ricky and Kourtney out with a bang. obviously we have Ricky as Phillip and Gina as Anne, and I think jet could play pt Barnum and dani could play his wife. I think Ashlyn could play Lettie and Kourtney could play Jenny Lind, Emmy could be one of pt's kids, Carlos could play the general small guy, and Seb (since he has to come back, right?) could play Anne's brother. honestly I have no idea if that works but I could totally see Kourtney nailing "never enough" and Ashlyn absolutely slaying "this is me." or maybe even the roles could be reversed! I could see ash doing "never enough" and kourt doing "this is me"! but I think Ricky and Gina would be so amazing doing "rewrite the stars" with their amazing chemistry and lovely singing voices.

honestly I headcanon that there's another freshmen student who joins the theater club and becomes a really good friend to Emmy. I always feel bad that she's so young and really doesn't have that many friends and is the only one on the young side, so there's a theater girl (or boy!) who transfers mid year and is an amazing singer and actor who plays pt barnum's other kid in the musical

i read a fanfic where Ricky and Gina secretly adopt a golden retriever while they're still in school and honestly it was one of the funniest and most rina things EVER. I definitely think they do this and struggle to hide the poor puppy from Gina's mom and Ricky's dad, but eventually they find out. Ricky's dad is totally cool with it, actually, he just wishes Ricky would have told him about it sooner. to no one's surprise, Gina's mom FLIPS. OUT. she grounds Gina for two months and takes away all cell phone, television, and computer privileges, restricting her free time so when she's not doing chores or her homework she is sitting in her room reading. she even puts locks on the window so Ricky can't sneak in! also to no one's surprise, Ricky figures out how to pick locks so he can sneak in to see his not so secret sweetheart. it's the longest two months of their lives but afterwards they're back and better than ever! oh, and they name the dog Romeo. and when they're older and actually moved out of their parents houses they buy another golden retriever puppy and name her Juliet.

ricky gets the role of Romeo in the movie "Romeo and Juliet" after Mack leaves. Quinn doesn't even have to think about her decision; immediately after "love you forever" and before the wildcats go to Denny's she pulls him aside and says "that took guts. you are so in love with that girl you don't even know what to do with yourself. what are you going to do all day while she's filming a movie? oh, but you don't say anything, because I have a proposition for you. your chemistry is so amazing, so natural, so artistic, that I would like to extend an offer for you to replace Mack in the movie and play the Romeo to Gina's Juliet." and obviously Ricky says yes without even hesitating, and then later realizes he should have thought about it but doesn't want to back down and let Gina down so he sticks with it. the movie ends up breaking a dozen box office records and Gina's career skyrockets as a result, as well as Ricky's music career, since he helped with the music and songs as well.

mack and Gina end up becoming good friends, and Mack and Ricky are even able to get past all the awkwardness of the past and be friendly to each other. Mack moves to salt lake to try and kickstart "mark and spark" again and he babysits Romeo all the time - even uses the dog in the eventual tv show as his Spark.

nini comes back to salt lake over the summer and reconnects with her old friends before her eventual tour in the fall, as she's become a quick rising singing sensation. she is elated that Ricky and Gina are actually together and harbors no hard feelings at all towards the pair. however, it's still hecka awkward between her and Ricky until Ricky reveals he wrote a song all about his feelings of hurt he has towards his ex and nini reveals that she did the same. after they play each other the songs, the two agree to try and be friends again and end up becoming almost as close as they used to be (I NEED rini friendship, they weren't good as a couple but like I just want them to be friends again 😕😕)

the wildcats return to camp shallow lake over the summer and put on a production of some obscure musical chosen by miss Jenn that no one has ever heard of before. of course, it's a smash hit and everyone becomes even more popular

Kourtney graduates top of her class and her valedictorian speech goes down in history as one of the greatest speeches ever performed at a high school graduation. she has the whole crowd in the palm of her hand and makes EVERYONE cry

ashlyn throws a raging good ol' times party at her house after graduation to celebrate Ricky and Kourtney and even ej comes back to celebrate

speaking of ej, he changes his major to become a teacher and winds up back at east high to become the new sports athletic coordinator. the football team has six successive playoff wins in a row under coach ej (since he refuses to go by his last name). he ends up marrying Val later on and the two have a bunch of adorable kids

ash and Maddox end up buying camp shallow lake from Dewey wood when he gets too old and they build a permanent cabin for them and their eventual family: a bunch of tumbling, amazing, singing redheads

ricky and Gina, as I mentioned before, have two goldens and at least two kids. maybe just the one. I imagine Ricky as a girl dad, because he's such a simp, and the two little girls have the most beautiful curls and are a perfect mix of their parents. Ricky is a musician but he also gets a minor in education, so he ends up becoming a music teacher/theater teacher when he's a little older and his girls need a little more stability. Gina is still a movie star and even though her schedule is crazy, she can always come home to Ricky and her puppies and her girls. that's one thing she can count on: forever.

After Ashlyn comes out, she wears the pride pin from Carlos literally everywhere

Val is aroace and cannot understand for the life of her why she keeps giving campers queer awakenings

Maddox is genderfluid and uses they/she most of the time

Jet and Maddox’s dog Joe Jack absolutely adores Ashlyn and Kourtney

After Nini gets Ricky the lottery ticket, they talk on the phone and realize that they can be friends again. After all, they had been friends for like 10 years.

Carlos’s dream show is 42nd Street. He doesn’t like the plot very much, but hey, there’s a ton of really cool dancing and he has so many ideas for it.

When Maddox moves to Salt Lake, they and EJ start talking more and become proper best friends

Jet and Maddox’s last name is Bell (like Saylor Bell Curda). Why did I decide this? Because 1: Belle was Ashlyn’s first lead. Invisible string theory. And 2: When Madlyn and Jetney get married, they combine their last names to become Casbell and Greenebell. And personally I love that a lot.

Ricky and Gina are both really big on physical touch, they’re always holding hands or linking pinkies or something like that. As a joke, the others will tell them to get a room, but in reality they’re so glad that Ricky and Gina are so happy.

Gina and Maddox get really overwhelmed with balancing the movie and the spring musical (which is Mean Girls btw), so Ricky and Ashlyn are always teaming up to make sure their girlfriends are taken care of.

Ashlyn’s camp nickname is Leo because of the Leo Rising thing

Maddox and Jet talk about how great their girlfriends are to each other

The spring musical is Mean Girls (as I previously mentioned), and the fall musical after Ricky and Kourtney graduate is The Addams Family

Gina is the biggest Reputation stan ever

Because Maddox and EJ have known each other since they were little, they have super weird inside jokes that don’t make sense to anyone else
