By • Olalekan Fagbade 500 private Lawyers volunteer to defend Gubernatorial Candidate at Supreme Court No fewer than 500 private legal practitioners have volunteered to defend Alhaji Nasir Gawuna, the Kano governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Supreme Court. Mr Joseph Onwudiwe, a spokesperson for the lawyers, under the aegis of the Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, stated this at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday. Onwudiwe said that the gesture was to enhance the country’s democracy. known at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja. SOME OF THE LAWYERS AT THE NEWS CONFERENCE ON TUESDAY IN ABUJA “Nigerians have observed keenly the situation unfolding in Kano State regarding the March 18 governorship election. “As a group saddled with the onerous responsibility of safe guarding our democratic ethos and values, we are no longer comfortable with the unwarranted attacks on the judiciary. “And certain moves to blackmail the Court into giving backing to wanton electoral malfeasance and vote heist. “We will no longer fold our arms as lawyers and watch the judiciary be continuously harangued and the temple of justice desecrated by a group of people who failed to perfect an electoral heist,” he said. Onwudiwe applauded the sound reasoning that resonated in the judgments of the tribunal and the Court of Appeal. He said that the judgments aligned with the yearnings and aspirations of the majority of Kano people as expressed in the valid number of votes cast in the March 18 Kano Governorship election. He said the group was not surprised that Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State and his agents had become insistent in selling propaganda in the name of a contradiction in the CTC of the Appeal Court Judgment. “Nigerians will have nothing but pity for a party in a suit who finds no premise upon which to launch a successful appeal against a judgment backed by law and fact. “May we repeat here that the judgment of the Court of Appeal on this case was a very straight forward one which rightly dismissed the appeal of Abba Yusuf and upheld his sack by the tribunal,” he said. He said that the courts envisaged clerical errors in judgment and therefore embedded in their handbook and rules, enactments that empowered it to vary its judgement to reflect original intentions. Onwudiwe urged Nigerians not to cave into the misleading narrative being pushed by the agents of Yusuf who were grasping at the clerical error on page 67 of the CTC of the Court of Appeal judgment. This, he said, was geared to bring the honourable justices who delivered the sound judgment to public disrepute. He stressed that the importance of the judiciary in keeping the country’s democracy alive and thriving could never be overemphasised. “We are with the judiciary and we assure them of our unflinching support as they move to save Nigeria’s democracy from vote riggers and election fraudsters. “We must sanitise our electoral system now and build a strong democratic wall against vote inflation and other electoral malfeasance,” he said. He called on peace-loving Nigerians to rise in defense of the country’s democracy.(NAN)

for @needcake's request, 5 times Engport died and one time they saved each other.
III.
Portugal finds him in the attic. The ceiling of the inn is heavily slanted, and through the drawn curtain hardly any light comes through. The room is musty and damp and smelled of — of rot, of festering wounds, of things falling apart.
England himself is still.
No one had bandaged his wounds, so lying on the bed infested with all manner of pests his body was a rich tapestry of reds and browns and mottled grey. Sickness cradled his spectral figure in its wings, perched on the headboard as it tore into its meal with abandon. For a moment, Portugal thought England was already dead.
Then he coughed, eyelashes fluttering weakly. Gabriel, he mouthed, voice long consumed by the illness — by the war, damn those things — that ravaged his body. Portugal saw the question in his eyes, anyways. Why are you here?
"To take you home," he murmured, brushing his knuckles over one bare cheekbone, rising from his pale skin like the spine of a great beast. "Did you think I could not find you? That I would not come for you?"
England only gazes at him. In the desolate landscape of his face, only his eyes remain a fevered green, too bright. Two jewels, set in clay.
He does not — cannot — protest when Portugal wraps his body in cloth, cradling his frail figure against his chest. Does not protest when Portugal carries him down the stairs, does not protest when he's forced onto the horse and Portugal rests his forehead against his and murmurs. It's not far. Hold on to me.
He does not protest, but oh — oh, how Portugal wishes he had.
England is dead now. Lying on a soft bed, cradled by linen and silk and velvet canopies, he's hidden away like some stolen treasure — an antique sword, a broken childhood doll — stashed in an opulent corner between Lisbon and the sea. This far away from his isles, the sun finally warms his skin, but his eyes are fixed and dark.
Portugal guards his corpse and regrets.
IV.
Tomás was — to say the least — confused.
He began getting a little disoriented when the first Dutch cannon struck their ship, and when the Dutch themselves boarded he was kind of lost — but to be confused in the chaos of battle was normal. Fights with the Dutch were normal. Even losing was pretty normal; their captain may fight like the undead, but the crew was only human, and they had been caught alone without escort.
At least, their captain had fought like the undead, until a tall Dutch sailor put a sword through his belly and a shot in his shoulder. Then he’d really just been dead.
That was when Tomás’ confusion really started. Because after killing their captain, the Dutch soldier had simply waved a hand and left, soldiers straggling behind as they made their way back to their own ship. The cannons fell silent moments later, and Tomás own battered comrades hadn’t tried to pursue. Watching their enemy’s flags disappear into the distance, Tomás had helped drag their barely conscious captain below deck as he pondered over this strange occurrence: in the middle of a war, a Dutch warship had just caught them, trounced them, and simply let them go.
But that had not been all. For just as he was leaving the sick bay, an officer had grabbed him in the hall and rasped, “Tell the navigator to set course for Dover.” Wide-eyed, Tomás had only managed to squeak out an affirmative before he’d been released, leaving him standing there with a bloody cloth with one hand and absolutely no clue why they were about to head into enemy territory after they had, uh, just been utterly destroyed by their enemy.
Still, Tomás had done his job and relayed the message, expecting that to be the end of the madness. He was only a rigger, he reasoned — if he just followed orders surely everything would straighten themselves out with time.
He was wrong. Now, a week later, Tomás still understood nothing. He had orders to find one Sir Kirkland, Lord of Canterbury, but he had no idea if he’s found the right one. When he’d asked the first mate what this Lord Kirkland looked like, the first mate had only shrugged and said, “Never met ‘im. Probably a geezer, since he’s a lord.”
Yet this young man standing in the doorway in front of Tomas, claiming to be Lord Kirkland, could not have been older than twenty.
“Are you or are you not one of Gabriel’s men?” The man demanded impatiently. His Portuguese was heavily accented, but clear.
“Yes. Yes sir.”
“And? What does the bastard want with me?”
“He’s dead, sir. My first mate asked me to come get you. Sir.”
The young man — Lord Kirkland — raised his eyebrows. His gaze seemed to skewer Tomás right through his skull. “Dead.” He repeated. Tomás nodded hesitantly. Lord Kirkland muttered something in his own language under his breath, then rolled his eyes and said, “Fine.” Fine? “Joseph!” He barked to someone in the interior of the manse. “Get this man a horse and ready the carriage. And call the doctor, for god’s sake, Gabriel’s gone and gotten himself killed again.” He whirled around and pinned Tomás with another look. “What’s your name?”
“Tomás Santiago, sir.”
“Thanks for your hard work, Santiago. After we put your captain back together, I’ll tell him to give you a bonus.”
Tomas stared. Put him back together? Bonus? Wasn’t the captain dead?
But this Lord Kirkland guy was still look at him expectantly, so he stuttered out a “Yes, sir” again and thanked him.
A few minutes later, Tomás left on a fine horse more confused than ever.
Notes
Scene 3 is set during the English Civil War (1642–1651). Portugal brings him to the Ribeira Palace, which used to be where the Praça do Comércio is now situated.
Scene 4 is during the Dutch-Portuguese wars. But it’s pretty much crack, so there’s really no need to say more.

Biden-Harris Report on Earthquakes Impact on Turkey and Syria
Tumblr media
In the aftermath of the earthquakes on February 6, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. authorized an immediate U.S. response and directed the heads of federal agencies to rapidly mobilize to assist the Government of Türkiye and humanitarian partners in Syria. Across the U.S. government, officials expressed their condolences to the people of Türkiye and Syria as well as their desire to support the humanitarian response. In the hours following the earthquakes, President Biden called President Erdogan to convey the readiness of the U.S. government to provide any and all needed assistance to our NATO Ally Türkiye. Secretary Tony Blinken, Secretary Lloyd Austin, and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan engaged their Turkish counterparts, and USAID Administrator Samantha Power spoke with the head of the Syrian Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets. First Lady Jill Biden sent a personal note of condolence to First Lady Emine Erdogan, and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan visited the Turkish Embassy to express condolences to the Turkish Ambassador and sign the official condolences book. U.S. officials have remained in regular coordination with their Turkish counterparts, with UN agencies, and with partners in Syria on how we can best support their efforts. Finally, the U.S. government affirmed to the Syrian mission to the UN that our humanitarian assistance is available to all Syrians, no matter where they live and that we are ready to provide additional support.
Life-saving efforts by the U.S. in the impacted region:
- Yesterday, the U.S. announced it will provide $85 million in life-saving assistance to provide shelter to the displaced, as well as food, medicine, and other desperately needed aid. - USAID deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to the earthquake region, which includes experienced emergency managers, construction riggers, hazardous materials technicians, licensed engineers and emergency medicine physicians, logisticians, paramedics, planners, search-and-rescue specialists, and search-and-rescue dogs with handlers. - With transportation support from the Department of Defense, two USAID urban search and rescue teams, composed of 159 members and 12 rescue dogs, quickly deployed from the U.S. to support Turkish search and rescue efforts. - To date, the U.S. has deployed approximately 170,000 pounds of specialized tools and equipment—including hydraulic concrete breaking equipment, saws, torches, and drills, along with advanced medical equipment to assist with search and rescue operations in Türkiye. - The Commander of U.S. European Command has directed the Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe to coordinate U.S. military assistance efforts. - U.S. Black Hawk helicopters are supporting airlift operations from Incirlik Airbase in Türkiye, transporting rescue personnel to sites that are most needed for rescue operations and difficult to access given the extent of the destruction. - U.S.-funded humanitarian partners are providing assistance throughout all areas of Syria, including health services, shelter support, food assistance, and access to water, sanitation, and hygiene. Those partners include the White Helmets, who have pulled more than 1,000 survivors from the rubble, and U.S.-supported Syrian medics who have been treating survivors across Idlib, Aleppo, and other affected areas. - U.S. officials have worked with Turkish authorities to ensure operations can resume at Bab al-Hawa crossing, a critical lifeline for UN-provided cross-border assistance into northwestern Syria. - Yesterday, to underscore that U.S. sanctions will not prevent or inhibit providing humanitarian assistance in Syria, the Department of the Treasury issued a broad General License to provide additional authorizations for disaster relief assistance to the Syrian people. This license will be in effect for six months. U.S. humanitarian assistance is delivered directly to the Syrian people, no matter where they live.
Support available to U.S. Citizens in Türkiye:
- U.S. Consular Affairs staff in Türkiye and the United States are working tirelessly to provide consular assistance to American victims their families, and any U.S. citizens in the affected areas. - Individuals in need of immediate, local emergency assistance in Türkiye should call Turkish authorities using the phone number 112. U.S. citizens impacted by the earthquake should contact the U.S. Embassy in Ankara. - Information is available to U.S. citizens in the area through alerts, the U.S. embassy and consulate websites, and travel.state.gov. The Biden-Harris Administration commends the outpouring of support from around the world. USAID’s Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) has a list of vetted organizations responding to this crisis.   Sources: THX News & The White House. Read the full article

At around ten o'clock in the evening of July 6th 1988 the Piper Alpha oil platform in the North Sea was rocked by a huge explosion.
The 30th anniversary of the disaster will be remembered at a special memorial service tonight in Aberdeen at the Piper Alpha Memorial Garden in Hazlehead Park. The names of all 167 men who lost their lives on July 6 1988 will be read out during the ceremony to be attended by their relatives, friends and representatives from the oil and gas sector.
The vast human tragedy of that day sent shockwaves around the world and forced the industry to take a painstaking look at its practices. On that night, there were more than 220 men on board Piper Alpha, with most in the accommodation section and more than 60 working on the night shift.
After a gas leak on the North Sea platform a series of explosions followed and, minutes later, it was engulfed in a fireball. By the time the rescue helicopters arrived, flames were reaching 300ft and could be seen from 70 miles away. The smoke and fire made evacuation by helicopter or lifeboat impossible, and many people gathered in the accommodation area. Remaining there meant certain death. With the platform ablaze and exploding, some men jumped off from 175ft above the North Sea. Others plunged from lower levels or clambered down ropes and hoses before plummeting into the water. Poundland to stop selling kitchen blades because of rise in knife crime
There were only 62 survivors that night in what remains the world’s worst offshore disaster. An inquiry led by Lord Cullen opened in Aberdeen in January 1989, ended in February the following year, and published its report of several hundred pages nine months after that. It led to North Sea safety being shifted from the Department of Energy to the Health and Safety Executive, and meant that automatic shut-down valves were made mandatory on rigs to starve a fire of fuel.
It's not often I would name all those that perished, but on the 3oth anniversary I think it is only fitting to do so, RIP to the 167......
