So forgive me if this is too broad a question... but you mentioned recently that Jay Garrick is 106. And I know Alan Scott, Ted Grant, and Ma Hunkle are all still alive. And even for the wartime heroes who have since passed on, a lot of them seem to have had children who can't be older than 30 like Jack Knight or Jade and Obsidian.
Do super-powers just make people age slower? But how does that apply to their spouses? Joan Garrick seems nearly as vital as her husband when I've seen her interviewed.
Oh. Right. This wasn't publically available news to a lot of people. Or rather while it was publically available it wasn't widely broadcast. Joan Garrick passed away, only a few months earlier this year, at the age of 102 after a sudden worsening of condition from a minor fall. She is buried in Valhalla Cemetery in upstate New York where her husband's plot waits beside her. Her funeral was a well attended but private ceremony with representatives from every group and generation of superheroes. I am told the speech by Kid Flash, formerly Impulse, was particularly beautiful.
As for how a woman of her kind reached the age of 102, how her husband goes strong at 106 and why so many of his contemporaries are still with us, that comes down to a single event on June 29th of 1941.

(Battle between the Justice Society and the villainous Ian Karkull, photograph published by the New York Times)
Ian Karkull was a former archeologist who discovered the remains of the lost city of Rangor somewhere in modern day Algeria where he discovered various lost sciences and mysticism that also drove him quite mad. Upon returning to civilization he fought against Dr. Fate many times and was, before this event, presumed dead.
Having instead retreated to the mystical realm known as the Shadowlands, Karkull had discovered through means unknown the identities of the next 9 Presidents of the United States after Franklin Roosevelt. Assembling a group of villains including mobster Alexander the Great, Tigress, Doctor Doog, Lightning Master, Sieur Satan, Tarantula (not to be confused with the All Star Squadron member of the same name), Wotan and Zachary Zor. He sent each of them across the country to assassinate each man where they were stopped by the present members of the Justice Society. When each villain was stopped (save for Wotan, who DID kill his target, try not to think about the implications of that too much) the JSA assembled in New York to do battle with Karkull himself where their combined onslaught overwhelmed his ability to contain the shadow energy his body was made up of, exploding over the assembled heroes. This magical detonation is assumed to be the cause of these heroes' extended longevity, the heroes present being The Atom, Doctor Fate, The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Hourman, Johnny Thunder, Sandman, The Spectre, Starman and The Flash's then girlfriend Joan Williams.
These heroes aged remarkably slowly in the following decades though most have since passed away in the line of duty or via mechanisms of age once their extended years did indeed begin catching up with them in other ways (a la Johnny Thunder's Alzheimer's diagnosis and eventual death).
This was one of the Society's most consequential battles in general, since its events directly lead to Starman joining the JSA in full, Dr. Fate foregoing the Helmet of Nabu in future battles, Hourman entering semi-retirement due to the health effects of Miraclo and Green Lantern stepping back from active membership out of guilt in his inability to stop Wotan from killing a small child.
On the other hand, Maxine Hunkel is just 100% like that. Death has not taken her because Death does not dare to approach her until she is good and goddamn ready.

Justice Society reading first part
So i've read three runs linked to the JSA: Infinity Inc. 1984, JSA 1991 and JSA 1999.
Loved the Infinity team, the young want to joint the fun. Lyta Trevor was pretty interesting and her couple with Hector Hall is great. Surprise kid for Alan and a really cool character with Henry King Junior and his relation with his father. The dynamic between Helena and Kara is chef kiss. The idea of legacy in all the JSA book. Ultra Humainite is really a great villians and love the inclusion of Solomon Grundy. I love the tone of old comics runs.
Dinah Drake is pretty great, the JSA run of 1991 poor Ted Knight in this story. Really the hawkman cowl is so silly.
Big run with JSA 1999 The theme of legacy is really the best thing, it's a family buissness in the JSA in all the senses of the terms. Courtney Whitmore is really cool, love her relation with Karen, Jakeem and Billy. Todd powers are really scary, loved the prince of darkness storyline poor Alan. The injustice society is cool as a villains team. Sorrow is a cool villain. Ted Grant is really funny and one hell of a fighter love him.
Mister Terrific is off the chart between his inteligence, his combat prowess and he's rich, better than Batman. Jay and Joan are a it couple. Hector as doctor Fate and the return of Lyta chef kiss. Return of Hawkman, Carter is really interesting and his relation with Kendra and Sand. The family feels christmas with Ma Hunkel and the thankgiving issue.
Really i think the JSA is a really the team wich is the blueprint and it's beautiful to see. My favourite were Alan Scott, Lyta Trevor, Hector Hall, Sand Hawkins, Courtney Whitmore and Michael Holt. So i will continue my JSA reading to next time.

Today in JSA History: First Appearance of Hank Hall also known as Hawk, Monarch, and Extant
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry “Hank” Hall—also known as Hawk, Monarch, and Extant—first appeared in Showcase #75, published on June 5, 1968. He was created by Steve Ditko and Steve Skeates.
Hank and his brother Don were granted powers by two cosmic forces: the Lord of Chaos, T’Charr, and the Lord of Order, Terataya. These powers made them avatars of Chaos and Order—War and Peace—becoming the superhero duo Hawk and Dove. As a team, they balanced each other out: Hank was a hot-headed conservative, while Don was thoughtful, cautious, and held liberal views. Together, they even joined the Teen Titans.
In different versions of continuity, Don meets his end in different ways—either at the hands of Mister Twister or during Crisis on Infinite Earths when the Shadow Demons attack. Don’s death pushed Hank further down a darker path, until he met Dawn Granger, the new avatar of Peace and Order. As the new Dove, she helped ground Hank again, and the two formed a strong heroic partnership.
Everything changed during Armageddon 2001, a time-travel crisis event where the villain Monarch emerges from the future to wreak havoc. When Monarch kills Dove, Hank snaps. In a rage, he kills Monarch and unmasks him—only to discover Monarch is himself. This paradoxical moment drives Hank over the edge. He dons the Monarch armor and begins his own journeys through time, eventually confronting Waverider and absorbing his time-manipulating abilities. With this power, Hank transforms into Extant, a full-fledged temporal villain.
As Extant, Hank plays a central role in Zero Hour: Crisis in Time!, aging the Justice Society of America and causing the deaths of the Atom (Al Pratt), Doctor Mid-Nite (Dr. Charles McNider), and Hourman (Rex Tyler). After this, it’s revealed in the JSA series that Dove’s death had been faked. She was pregnant with Hank’s child—who would be reborn as Hector Hall, the new Doctor Fate. (Yes, the same Hector Hall who was originally the son of Hawkman and Hawkgirl.)
Extant eventually battles the reformed Justice Society. In a pivotal moment, Atom-Smasher convinces Hourman (Matthew Tyler) and Metron to teleport Extant into the seat of a crashing plane, swapping him with Atom-Smasher’s mother. Hank is killed.
Later, during Blackest Night, Hank returns as a member of the undead Black Lantern Corps. He is fully resurrected in Brightest Day and resumes his role as Hawk. In Dark Crisis, it's revealed that the Great Darkness had been influencing him all along—driving him toward his transformations into Monarch and Extant.
Before Hank’s resurrection, the Hawk legacy was briefly carried on by Sasha Martens and then Holly Granger, Dawn’s sister. Interestingly, Hank’s path as Monarch was originally intended for Captain Atom, linking the characters in DC lore ever since.
And for all the bird-themed superhero connections, Hank Hall has no actual relation to Hawkman, despite sharing the same surname, hawk motif, and a son. Personally, if I were rewriting DC continuity, I’d at least make them second cousins. That way, Hawk and Dove could have stood alongside Hawkman’s other proteges like Golden Eagle, Northwind, and the Silver Scarab.

Study Treat
Hournite fluff because I needed it
~.~
“Hey.” Rick pulled up his usual chair at their lunch table, already frowning at his group of friends. Courtney was texting furiously on her phone, ignoring her tray of food, Yolanda was reading a book while occasionally spooning soup into her mouth, and Beth was pouring over at least seven packs of stapled worksheets, muttering to herself. “What’s going on?”
“Midterm,” Beth said, not even allowing herself to meet his concerned gaze. She uncapped a highlighter with her teeth and slashed through half a paragraph. “I spent too much time in our JSA file last night. I don’t think I’m ready.”
“Why don’t you use the library?” The cafeteria was as loud and boisterous as always. This wasn’t the best place to buckle down and get work done.
“I can’t.” Beth blew out an exasperated breath, glancing at the clock mounted on the wall. “It’s full.”
“We’re keeping ourselves occupied not to distract her,” Yolanda informed, lifting her book in explanation.
Courtney went “yeah,” and continued on her phone.
“Who are you texting?”
“No one.”
Rick quirked a brow at her and started to unpack his brown bag. “No one?”
“Fine. It’s Jennie.” Court shushed him. “Beth’s studying, remember?”
Rick glanced at her attempting to memorize definitions, creating flashcards at lightning speed. She looked stressed.
“Don’t feel so bad, Beth. You were helping us all out. We needed that information on Hawkman.”
“I know,” she said tersely, “but it doesn’t mean I’m okay with giving up and getting a bad grade.”
Rick sighed and stood up again. “I’ll be back.”
He returned with her favourite vitamin water sold by the lunch ladies. Pink. Rick set it in front of Beth’s face, leaning down to kiss her forehead as Courtney and Yolanda remained distracted by their texting and book.
Beth’s pen froze in her hand when she felt the sudden contact. Her eyes jerked upwards just when Rick pulled away. “What? Why’d you do that?” she asked breathlessly.
“It’s juice,” Rick said, stating the obvious as he returned to his sandwich. “Or vitamin water. Whatever. You haven’t opened your lunch. Thought it might help.”
Her eyes brightened as she processed his small act of kindness. Immediately the tension in her shoulders relaxed, and a smile slowly crept across her face, her mouth curving sweetly at the corners. “You kissed my forehead.”
Rick shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant and failing. He trained his eyes on his food, willing the flush attempting to flair up his neck to stay far from his face. “I thought that might help too.”
“Alright!” Courtney grinned, pocketing her phone. “Crisis averted! Todd was just hangry.” She picked up her knife and fork to dig into her lunch tray as Yolanda flipped another page of her novel, widening her grin at Beth and Rick. Her smile grew perplexed, eyebrows creasing together in confused fascination at the two resolutely not looking at each other.
“What just happened?”
“Nothing,” they both said, then shared a surprised look at each other. Rick shrugged again with a lopsided smile as Beth chuckled, finally unscrewing her drink cap for a sip.
“Something’s gotta give soon, Court,” Yolanda muttered under her breath. “They do stuff like this every week.”

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
December 17th - Hawkgirl / Kendra Saunders
Kendra Saunders had been a young woman who suffered from severe depression and anxiety.  She became pregnant when she was very young and ended up giving her daughter up for adoption.  The whole affair further compounded her feelings of despair and, in a dark moment of hopelessness, she attempted to take her own life.  Kendra was technically dead for a moment and within that moment, the spirit of Shiera Hall entered and occupied her body.
Shiera had been the Golden Age Hawkwoman and, similar to Hawkman, was trapped in an endless cycle of reincarnation.  In this instance, however, rather than being born into a new body, Shiera entered the seemingly vacated body of Kendra.  Although it did not prove to be a seamless process in that the now revived Kendra possessed both her own soul as well as that belonging to Shiera.  Initially this unified entity possessed all of Kendra’s memories but only a flickering portion of Shiera’s memories.
To make matters more confusing for the young woman was that she had suddenly become a fierce and accomplished combatant, with enhanced strength, speed and dexterity as we'll as a near peerless proficiency in the use of a Nth metal battle mace.  Compelled by forced she did not yet understand, sought out Hawkwoman’s Nth metal flying harness and used it to become the new Hawkgirl.  Her adventures quickly leading to becoming a member of the contemporary iteration of The Justice   Society.  During her time with the Society, Kendra fostered a romantic relationship with her teammate, Sandy Hawkins.
When Hawkman ultimately returned, he was confused and angered by the fact that his eternal love had become this new entity that did not fully entail Shiera’s memories and feelings.  It led to a great deal of friction between him, Hawkgirl and Sandy, ultimately contributing to Sandy’s decision to step down as leader and chairperson of The Justice Society.
As time went by, Kendra began to recall more and more of Shiera’s memories and experiences; as well as an increased anxiety that Shiera’s personality would dominate and ultimately subsume her own.  Kendra left the Society and accepted a role as a member of the newly reformed Justice League.  During this time, she entered into a brief affair with Red Arrow, which proved to be her effort to resist her growing attraction to Hawkman and concern that giving into such feelings would cause her to become more Shiera and less Kendra.
Later, Kendra encountered the fellow winged hero known as Zauriel, an angel of the Eagle Host who possessed mystical abilities and knowledge.  Zauriel revels to her that Kendra is the reincarnation of the Egyptian princess named Chay-Ara.  Shiera was herself also a reincarnation of this princess and the internal conflict Kendra had been suffering from was merely memories of her past selves trying to align into a unified whole.  This knowledge offered Kendra peace and she was no longer worried that her psychological growth was a manifestation of another entity trying to take over.  Having resolved this dilemma, Kendra ultimately gave in to her desire to be with Hawkman and the two eternal mates were once more reunited.
The Kendra Saunders version of Hawkgirl has featured in the television series The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, portrayed by actress Ciara Renée.  The heroine first appeared in the pages of JSA: Secret Files #1 (1999).

this is random but how come in that one jsa returns comic u just posted some of the jsa are like much newer/younger heroes ? like it looked like static shock was there unless i’m totally confused
hey! so, the modern jsa is made out of the few remaining members of the original 1940s team and a lot of second generation heroes. some of them are the children of the original team and they first appeared in infinity inc (1984) specifically as a next gen jsa, the others joined in either the jsa (1999) or justice society of america (2007) runs. the team consists of:
Tumblr media
top row: hawkman/carter hall & hawkgirl (identity unknown since kendra saunders, the jsa's last hawkgirl, disappeared with the justice league), cyclone/maxine hunkel (granddaughter of the 1940s red tornado, joined in jsa 2007), power girl/karen starr (joined in all-star comics 1976), yolanda montez/wildcat (joined in infinity inc, ted grant's goddaughter);
middle row: jade/jennifer lynn hayden (joined in infinity inc, alan scott's daughter), doctor fate/khalid nassour (latest bearer of the mantle, first time with the jsa after his tenure with the justice league dark), green lantern/alan scott, doctor midnite/beth chapel (joined in infinity inc, protege of charles mcnider aka the original midnite), obsidian/todd rice (joined in infinity inc, alan scott's son);
bottom row: jakeem williams/jakeem thunder (who you might be mistaking for static shock! he joined in jsa 1999 and he's johnny thunder's successor), mister terrific/michael holt (joined in jsa 1999, was given terry sloane's title by the spectre), wildcat/ted grant, atom smasher/al rothstein (joined in infinity inc, al pratt's godson), hourman/rick tyler (joined in infinity inc, rex tyler's son).
over time, the original 1940s members of the jsa have passed away or retired (ted knight/starman, terry sloane/mister terrific, wesley dodds/sandman, al pratt/the atom, kent nelson/doctor fate, charles mcnider/doctor midnite, shiera sanders/hawkgirl and johnny thunder in the former category; rex tyler/hourman in the latter) so only carter hall, alan scott, ted grant and jay garrick (currently otherwise occupied in the flash) remain.
as a huge fan of the original team, i'm not completely in love with the current lineup but i'm looking forward to seeing more of them and i hope this makes sense & answered your questions! :)

Hi what can you tell me about the hawk people? You know hawkmen, hawkwomen and hawkgirls.
Also I would like to know if golden eagle and the other bird themed superheroes have any connection to them.
I can tell you what I know I suppose. Generally there are 5 (ish, boy will we get to that) people who have used some version of the Hawk names.
The first pair, and the pair I am most familiar with are Carter Hall and Shiera Hall (nee Saunders). They were Egyptologists and Museum Curators who discovered that they were reincarnations of an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh and his Queen. Discovering artifacts from within the tomb of their past lives formed of the mysterious Nth Metal they took to the air alongside the Justice Society at first and later the All Star Squadron, with Hawkman and Hawkgirl being core members on either line up respectively.
They vanished alongside most of the rest of their generation post war, returning after the birth of the JLA brought the JSA back out of semi retirement after having had one biological child (Hector Hall, later Silver Scarab and Dr Fate) and one godson (Norda Cantrell, later Northwind)
Both of the original Hawks would lose their lives during the Zero Hour crisis in rather opaque circumstances. They are honored by a memorial at Valhalla Cemetery in upstate New York.
The second pair, later trio and now a quartet appeared in Midway City in the modern day. They are aliens from the planet Thanagar and stand in opposition to its militaristic regime. The original Hawkgirl of that duo eventually changed her name to Hawkwoman since she "did not enjoy the implications of the word 'girl' on this planet", her words, not mine.
Those two had a sidekick, named Golden Eagle
Tumblr media
(A shot of Hawkman, Hawkwoman and Golden Eagle flying away from a charity benefit in Midway City)
Eventually, alongside the three of them, as Golden Eagle grew older and became less active. Which happens to sidekicks every now and again, another young protege came into the Hawks' lives, who took the Hawkgirl name for herself. It is assumed she is a native of St. Roch, Louisiana because now the Hawks as a unit seem to split their time between there and Midway City.
The relationship, if any, between the first and second generation of Hawks, and the circumstances around the "adoption" of Golden Eagle or the appearence of the 3rd Hawkgirl are, of course, totally unknown as unlike the first generation, the 2nd generation maintain private identities of some kind and make use of their right to privacy

0013 - Hawkman (Katar Hol/Carter Hall)
Age: 43 (physical), 103 (mental).
Occupation: Museum curator, adjunct professor, adventurer.
Marital status: Widowed
Known relatives: Shiera Saunders Hall (wife, deceased), Hector Hall (son, deceased), Hippolyta Trevor Hall (daughter-in-law, deceased), Daniel Hall (grandson), Norda Cantrell (godson).
Group affiliation: Justice Society of America, formerly All-Star Squadron.
Base of operations: Stonechat Museum, St. Roch, Louisiana
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 195 lbs.
History:
c. 1280 B.C: Prince Khufu is born in Egypt.
c. 1255 B.C: Khufu, along with his beloved Chay-Ara, the wizard Nabu, and champion Teth-Adam, come across the wreckage of a Thanagarian ship, laden with the mysterious Nth metal. The two use the alien technology to bring peace to their land and build incredible wonders.
C. 1240 B.C: Khufu and Chay-Ara are murdered by the priest Hath-Set, destined to be reincarnated into new bodies.
1917 A.D: Khufu is reincarnated into the body of newborn Carter Hall.
1940 A.D:
When on a trip to Egypt as an archaeologist, Hall regains the memories of his life as Khufu, using the hawk imagery of the Egyptian deity Horus to become Hawkman.
Carter meets Shiera Saunders, the reincarnation of Chay-Ara, and she becomes Hawkgirl, fighting by his side.
Hall and Saunders first encounter Dr. Anton Hastor, the modern reincarnation of Hath-Set.
The pair become founding members of the Justice Society of America, with Hall acting as their first chairman.
1941 A.D: President Franklin Roosevelt calls on Hawkman and the rest of the JSA to join the war effort, fighting on the home front as members of the All-Star Squadron.
1947 A.D: Hall and Saunders first encounter Jim Craddock, the Gentleman Ghost.
1951 A.D: As part of a scheme from Per Degaton, the Justice Society is called before the House Un-American Activities Commission, and forced to either reveal their true identities, or disband. Hall, alongside many of his comrades, choose to disband the team.
1953 A.D: Hall and Saunders are married, and have a son, Hector. They also discover the kingdom of Feithera, and adopt one of the avian humanoid natives, Norda, as their godson.
1979 A.D: Hall and Saunders are murdered by Hastor, and reincarnate as Thanagarian police officers Katar Hol and Shayera Thal.
18 years ago: Hol and Thal come to Earth, becoming members of the Justice League of America, and fast friends with Ray Palmer, the Atom.
14 years ago: Hol severs ties with Thanagar after the planet declares war on neighboring planet Rann.
10 years ago: Thal dies and Hol is gravely injured while helping to repel the invasion of Earth by an alien alliance that included Thanagarians among their number. When Hol comes to, Carter Hall’s memories and personality have re-asserted themselves.
7 years ago:
Hall joins the newly reformed Justice Society alongside Kendra Saunders, the latest reincarnation of Chay-Ara and Shiera’s grand-niece.
Hall becomes the curator of the Stonechat Museum in St. Roch, Louisiana.
5 years ago:
Ray Palmer is murdered by his ex-wife, Jean Loring, under the control of Eclipso. In response, Hall nearly murders Loring in cold blood, only stopped by the intervention of Kendra.
Hall is called upon to fight in the war between Rann and Thanagar. He remains on Thanagar after the war to help mediate the newly brokered peace between the planets, serving as a member of the Thanagarian police force.
3 years ago: Carter returns to Earth, only to be swept up in the Blackest Night. He and Kendra are seemingly killed by the reanimated Black Lantern corpse of Ray Palmer, but survive as they weren’t killed by Hath-Set.
1 year ago: Carter learns of many of his past lives in a vision, and embarks on a journey to rediscover himself.
Present day: Carter continues serving as a member of the Justice Society of America, while also trying to reconcile his past lives with his present existence.
Commentary:
Oh, Hawkman. You and your partner are somehow only the second most confusing characters in all of DC continuity, thanks to Donna Troy and her rat’s nest of backstories. For the uninformed, there are essentially two major incarnations of Hawkman: the reincarnated Egyptian prince and the space cop. DC themselves had one hell of a time figuring out which Hawkman they wanted to use, merging them both into one Hawk-God figure during Zero Hour before eventually settling on Carter Hall as the primary Hawkman. (And then, of course, the Justice League cartoon had to use the Thanagarian versions of the Hawks just to complicate matters.)
Thankfully, Robert Venditti came up with a simple and elegant explanation in his Hawkman series: Khufu and Chay-ara’s spirits reincarnate through space and time. Khufu = Katar = Carter = about a hundred others, including Hawkmen of Rann and Krypton. It’s a really simple retcon that adds a lot of depth to the character’s history and opens up new avenues for storytelling, and that’s what I’m going with here.
Another interesting wrinkle in this timeline is that only the reincarnated Hath-Set can kill the Hawks, and is fated to eventually in every reincarnation. That means that during the Blackest Night, the Black Lanterns’ attempts to recruit the Hawks to their cause are all for naught. In addition, something unprecedented happens during the Invasion, when Shayera dies but Katar survives, meaning their spirits don’t move on quite as intended, resulting in Kendra Saunders being Hawkgirl with no memories of her past lives while Carter asserts control of Katar’s body.
Character-wise, Hawkman is sort of a blend between Indiana Jones and Conan the Barbarian, being an adventurer-archaeologist scouring the world for treasures, but also giving no quarter in combat and unafraid to roll some heads.  He’s very dedicated to his partner, even if she’s hesitant to embrace destiny and reciprocate his feelings, as Kendra is.
Carter Hawkman’s appearance has stabilized into the look you see above after several costume changes during the Golden Age. It’s suitably badass and Conan-esque. Katar’s costume, being a Thanagarian police uniform, had more coverage and actual armor befitting his role.
Next: Hawkwoman and then Ray Palmer.

TOMASI, and others art by IVAN REIS, PATRICK GLEASON, and others new box art by IVAN REIS and OCLAIR ALBERT A war has been brewing between the different colored Lantern Corps, with the Green Lanterns fighting the Yellow, the Red trying to destroy everything, and the Blue attempting to broker peace among the tribes.
