In Death Becomes Her, the main characters kill each other multiple times … for laughs! Robert Zemeckis' 1992 film is a cult classic; its stage adaptation — with a book by Marco Pennette and lyrics and music by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey — is a delightfully unhinged musical that I knew needed the Tiny Desk treatment.

Death Becomes Her
Release Date: May 2024
Date of the boot: Broadway – October 2024 (in previews)
Watched Date: June 16, 2025
Well, the Americans in the audience did seem to love it. They were eating everything up. Personally, I struggled deeply to connect to the characters in any meaningful way. But, honestly, it’s my fault entirely. This is a musical comedy and I’ve come to the realization that I’m quite picky with those. Let’s start with the positives:
The music and lyrics were done by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey who did a rather undeniably good job. Not all of the songs were amazing, but they were all in general really entertaining and well done. The instrumental and rhythm of most songs was really top notch and catchy. The lyrics at times felt odd but in general fit the songs quite well. Plenty of times I caught certain bits of the songs that I’d heard the audio to and knew they had gone viral on tiktok.
And that’s it for the positives. This musical is based on a movie so it’s not like Marco Pennette, the person that wrote the book, had much of a say on the overall story. However, he really did create the least likeable characters out there with frankly zero redeemable or emotional moments. The characters just do things and to be honest, this is just a comedy where you have to turn off your brain and expect nothing. The audience in this boot were laughing at literally everything, I have no idea why but they lapped up literally anything and it frankly made me all the more mad at how little I was enjoying this musical while they laughed at the most unfunny thing I’ve heard all year. Oh well, wasn’t for me, I guess.
Megan Hilty as Madeline and Jennifer Simard as Helen Sharp were fine. Personally, I don’t think their chemistry was really all that good and I slightly prefer Helen’s character as opposed to Madeline who had quite literally no redeeming features. Christopher Sieber as Ernest did a good enough job playing the useless husband but I genuinely didn’t think he would be that important.
What songs are going on my playlist: Siempre Viva
Favourite character(s): Stefan (the person working for Mad)
Moment/Scene enjoyed the most: Nothing really, I guess Siempre Viva scene because the song was enjoyable
