Writing tips deep in my heaps of cringe, that are actually good (imo) :
When writing in third person, don't say what a character cannot do while talking from their perspective. Frame the idea by telling us what they can do, or through the opinion of other characters. For eg. Instead of saying "Mattie was bad at flying planes", say "Mattie preferred cars to planes, and would much rather his brother do the plane-flying." See? Now you've even managed to drop in a nod about his brother. You could also say, "Kevin felt safer when Mattie's brother flew the plane than when Mattie did." Put the blame on Kevin - don't judge Mattie yourself. As a narrator you must pretend to always be on your MCs' side. Ofc, this would vary with different styles of narration, but this is a general rule.
Show how important a character is by how much time you take to talk about them. You would describe your MCs well, and bring up their hobbies and interests. You wouldn't describe a background character as much. You can use this to humanize or dehumanize characters. You may initially talk very little about the main villain yourself, and rely on dialogue among the other characters. This makes the villain feel like a force rather than a person. As the story progresses though, and you decide you want to drop in a *hairflips dramatically* sad back story, you can humanize the villain, and make them more understandable as a person.
Learn from art. Try describing different sceneries or portraits as practice. Also practice writing comic books or manga as stories. Visualizing your story as comic or manga panels can really help you understand pacing and paragraphs. Take note of their vibrance and positioning.
Learn from people's mannerisms and how they are received by other people. For eg, when we ask my dad a question, he pauses to gather his thoughts before speaking. Out of respect, we wait silently during this pause. This shows how confident and charismatic my dad is. A friend of mine only verbally roasts people within our friend group, and apologizes profusely after. This shows she is both empathetic and extremely quick-witted. I could create well rounded characters based on just examples as simple as these.
This tip is what I like to call 'the fake solution' and is employed by many famous authors. For this, you force readers to make assumptions. Maybe about how the magic system works, or about who the villain is. Make it seem like the characters have come to a conclusion and that conclusion is the final solution to conflict. Then tear down those assumptions and create a whole other ending. Similar to the red herring, except this time it's all in the characters' heads and dialogue. Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy is a good example of playing with assumptions forced upon readers by the writer.
In your first chapter, focus on creating potential. You don't have to jump into the heart of the action right away, but you have to make sure your readers understand the potential for this action. For example the opening chapter of Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys is relatively low paced, but it leaves you with questions. It makes you wonder who the boy who talked to Blue is, and how Blue will deal with life after such a strange prophecy. This makes you need to continue reading, to find answers.
For good worldbuilding, study at least a little bit of history. Wars and military tricks make for good free prompts. If your world contains vibrant races, make sure you research and incorporate the history and implications of racism, social hierarchy and trade. Understand how this will impact travellers and mercenaries (audiences love those). Make up your own old wives' tales and coping mechanisms.
Understand that the best stories are written around an idea rather than a character. Your protagonist is simply the face of your story. The weather of the world reflects on the protagonist's choices and health. Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games focuses on the dark side of media and politics and how they are used to control a people. Notice that by the third book, Katniss, our protagonist, is doing very little herself, though her few moments are loud and powerful. Katniss could achieve nothing alone. It takes a whole bunch of people to fuel the revolution. Note that it is completely okay to write a character based story, if that's what you like. But there are tons of those. If you really want to make an impact, make an idea-based story.
Respect all your characters equally. You may love some characters more than others, but remember all your characters are representatives of people. Make sure each of them has a voice and a chance to prove themselves.
Use prose to your advantage. Let the length of your sentence define whether the sequence is fast paced or slow. For example, if your want to show surprise, your sentences must be short. Instead of saying "She snatched the last dagger and stared at it, observing each engraving", say " She snatched up the last dagger. Each engraving was sick, gnarled. "
That was a heck of a long post, but that's all from me. Feel free to add your own or contradict anything I've written.

📂💻🧠❤️‍🔥🔬💭📖🧪🌃  pt. 3
here was part 2!
so hiii...... 2024 was insane (understatement). so many highs & lows & lessons learned through them - i tweeted about it, wrote at length about it (Whatever the name of the catastrophe, it is never the opposite of love), talked my friends' & love ones' ears over it, & will continually be processing it as I live... but onwards, upwards, forwards. thank you for being here.
i'm really happy to say that I actually did start a lot of my TOWARDS in 2024. i joined kolektif semai🌱🌹 (a local collective focused on learning-unlearning-healing-organizing through a feminist ecosocialist lens) through being introduced to Rafa at purplecode (💗) during DekodeFest 2023, thus my more political-philosophical-theoretical readings will constantly be influenced by what we discuss hihi. menuju penelitian yg militan ygy!!!!!! i've also solidified my research areas as below:
poetical science | sains puitika
aphantasia & cognitive science as a whole | afantasia & ilmu kognitif secara luas
critical approaches to tech & AI | pendekatan alternatif-&-kritis terhadap teknologi & AI
Indonesian literature & history | sastra & sejarah Indonesia
memory- & archive-keeping | perawatan ingatan[memori] & pengarsipan
though ofc what I am & what I'm interested in knowing of extends beyond this (& i really hope i/us as a society don't need to keep prefacing this - constantly needing to affirm that we are & can be multidimensional because there still being others who doubt that). as always, carrying over books from pt1&pt2 but reprioritizing & c.
books i’m reading 2025 + i’ll be at literal in terms of book-logging as always! ( *^-^)ρ(^0^* ) though i am definitely going to be saving the data on my local drives ASAP. no dev updates since 2022 is... uhhh......

Ha! You thought I was done?? Poor bastards. Have another HC for the road. Who knows, maybe I’ll do one on Neil too.
-Kevin Day has Horrible posture when he studies. Or reads his history books. Or watches Exy. Or basically does anything that holds his attention.
-Nicky claims it’s his one imperfection, then clarifies that he means physically.
-he quickly adds that the scowl directed at him for that comment may have to be added to the list
-Andrew and Neil let him be for a while until he starts complaining about his back hurting
-“I’m a professional Exy player barely in my 20’s you guys, this is a big deal!!?”
-If anyone asks they would 100% say they only do it because Kevin’s griping is annoying, but they care about their boyfriend and his wellbeing
-thus begins the antics
-It starts with just saying his name and just looking at him meaningfully, but quickly progresses
-Andrew (ofc) is the first one to start throwing things. (It was a pen, and nailed Kevin directly on the temple)
-then the game is on. Chips, pillows, shoes, a whole subway foot long on one notable occasion (it wasn’t even wrapped. There was lettuce Everywhere)
-sometimes they just shove his shoulder when they walk by and point a warning finger at him.
-sometimes Neil will note the activity Kevin is about to do and koala him because he Knows what’s going to happen (a strictly preventative measure that Neil obviously gains nothing from. Though, when pressed, he will admit that the rhythm of Kevin’s breathing plastered to his chest is Very nice)
-Andrew will sometimes walk behind him and haul his torso straight with a (mostly) light grip around his neck (Kevin always has a hard time finding his focus again after these occurrences, and occasionally abandons the task at hand to follow Andrew into the bedroom)
-but he definitely stops complaining about his sore back

okay so for y’all tfc/aftg fans, have you ever considered jean/neil/andrew? because i hadn’t until i saw a fic with this dynamic in the andreil tag, and i didn’t even get to reading it because i needed to think about it on my own and make my own headcanons and stuff. but. it makes so much sense?? i mean we don’t know much about jean from canon (and i’ve tried to avoid nora’s extra content because it always ends Badly when i try to follow what the author says after the release of the books, cough, jkr, cough) but from the hc’s i’ve made for myself and the portrayals i’ve read in fics and stuff, he would fit perfectly with andrew and neil?? like, no offense to kandreil (i enjoy that too), but jean would fit them so so so much better than kevin? i always think about what would happen if jean joined the foxes instead of the trojans (even tho i loooove my son jeremy) he’d fit well with andrew & neil? i don’t think jean will ever forgive kevin for leaving him (even tho jean knows it’s his own fault. he just wanted someone to take care of him for once, you know?) but i feel like him & neil would actually bond over the time neil was in the nest. really. i know it sounds weird but think about it. andrew hates jean (obviously) but he knows jean didn’t have a choice (otherwise andrew would’ve killed him the moment he saw jean) so he leaves him be. jean tries to apologize to neil but neil the martyr josten won’t have it, ofc, and i have this hc that they already have an existing dynamic between them (remember “jean will help you if you help him” even tho neil didn’t see that, he still made it happen to some extent.). anyway. i digress. the point is, jean and neil connect/forgive each other. jean is grateful for what neil has done for him and neil is soft af (come at me i’ll fight you but he also has a thing for lost causes) so of course he forgives jean and they bond etc., etc. jean has a crush on neil (of course he does) and he can’t, you know, really pursue it because andrew fucking minyard, need i say more? and andrew is observant af so obviously he notices and he’s jealous but he’s also like “this is nothing if you want to do sth with him i’m not gonna stop you” @ neil and neil is like whaaat and andrew is like of course you didn’t notice. how did i end up with a dumbass like you. (cue neil “i thought this was nothing”.) so. neil is intrigued because despite all the other times andrew has told him this (aka every time someone hits on him, even tho neil keeps saying ”i don’t swing”), this time he is actually a teeny tiny bit interested in jean in that way. so he talks to andrew. (that boy has no shame, you hear me?) “i want to try this, but i don’t want what we have to change.” “so it won’t.” so yeah. that’s how jean/neil happens. (jean is very suspicious of how neil is still with andrew, but unlike the other foxes, he actually understands andreil when neil explains their thing to him.) ofc, this makes jean really really interested in exactly what makes andrew minyard tick, and he starts watching him. like, really watching him. so of course andrew’s attention is piqued, and he’s like? oookay (also jean is hot and no one said he couldn’t look back, also neil doesn’t mind.) ((neil is actually really happy.)) (((the other foxes are very confused when andrew and jean start disappearing together instead of andrew and neil. they still don’t know about jean and neil.))) jean doesn’t know much about andrew’s history other than what he knows from riko and the media after the whole drake thing, but he knows how to listen and that’s good enough for now, until when andrew is ready to open up to him.
okay imma stop but if you wanna talk more about it hit me up in my ask box or dm.

11 questions tag
Thank you @bisexualfrench for the tag!! (btw, these were excellent questions!!)
the rules are: always post the rules, answer the 11 questions then make up 11 more and tag 11 people.
Now watch me cram massive amounts of excess info about myself in 11 short q's.
1.  do you like dancing? whats your fave type?
Okay i'm off to a bad start, you couldn't pay me to dance! (Party advice I got years ago omg: "you don't have to dance, you don't have to drink, you don't have to get off with anyone.. Well i mean you have to do at least one.." dancing is still my last resort)
2. note-taking: written or typed?
Written! i can write crazily fast and my hand won't get tired! Maybe typing for emergency exam prep.
3. what’s your current learning goal (or language learning goal)?
Pass my French a level lmfao, that'd be quite nice. I guess expand my vocabulary/improve grammar/ speak more in French, and learn a lil Russian!
4. how would you describe your fashion style?
Lesbian farmer/art student by day, French lit student, abandoned by lover and slowly losing grasp on reality by night
5. fave book? or fave lgbt book?
Madame Bovary? We Need To Talk About Kevin? The Stepford Wives? The Virgin Suicides? i like books that make me think & feel anxious about my life.
As for LGBT books.. i don't like most of the ones i've read, it pains me to say it! i find the characters are simplified and offensive, or very pandering and mushy, while obviously included so the writer could pat themselves on the back.
If anyone has read a book about two girls who fall in love, and it isn't YA, it isn't sickly sweet or offensive (middle ground, people!), it isn't sexless and cutesy, there's real conflict, real plot, real characters who are funny and gritty and likable.. TELL ME! I could rage about my issues with LGBT books all day
But i digress. Will Grayson, Will Grayson? i enjoyed it! who could forget the dramatic, salvatore-esque masterpiece of Call Me By Your Name? oh, and Beauty Queens has a small gay subplot, but it's a really excellent story that i would recommend for all your YA Marxist needs.
6. are you a procrastinator?
YES! the reason this is thesis length is so I can hide from my History coursework :(
7. if you could dye your hair any color with no roots growing back or bleaching damage, what would you choose? (copied from above askjd)
maybe black? i find black hair really pretty!! but i'd be too afraid of murdering my poor hair irl
8. do you have a pet? if not, which pet would you rather have?
i have a rottweiler, i love her to pieces but i'd wanted a corgi or a dachshund!! it was not to be.. i got a muscle bound werewolf instead (i 💘 her tho)
9. are you a walk in the forest person or jog on the beach person?
jog on the beach, my hair would wind up digesting half the forest. in another country tho.. there's a reason baywatch never got an english version.
10. your ideal house?
honestly, i'm not a house person! I'd rather have a really cute apartment.. but anywhere that my mum doesn't wake me up hoovering sounds pretty nice
11.  opinion on abandoned theme parks and any other such liminal spaces?
in theory.. love. in reality? i hold my friend's hand walking through the train station at night. I'm a scaredy cat of the highest order.
Questions!
🗼 is there a person you have a very conflicted relationship with?
🗼 the quality you value most highly in others?
🗼 a habit you wish you could kick?
🗼 a habit you wish you could keep?
🗼 something you'd tell your past self?
🗼 fave book? (i have to ask, it says so much about a person!)
🗼 if you had to pick an era/place to live in? (this can be romantacized/aesthetic based, otherwise this question would be no fun because the world has always been lowkey terrible)
🗼 if you could pick a language to speak without studying?
🗼 what would you be doing with your life if you didn't have to be practical?
🗼 guilty pleasure?
🗼 favourite hobby?
i tag (if you wish! or just do like half the mission and don't think up questions there are no rules) : @bisexualfrench @language-amante @squeezieslangblr @curiousfrenchgirl @enthousiaste-extraordinaire @ame-depressive no pressure ofc 💚
