Chapter 1-Black Penny

Summary: You grew up in the hustle and bustle of a city most of your life, so you packed your few belongings and headed straight to New Orleans. You hoped to live a simpler, quieter life on the Historic French Quarter. By day during the week, you helped manage Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo Shop and by nightfall you tended bar at Black Penny on the weekends.

You were aware mutants existed, and believed them to be just as ordinary as you but only with extraordinary abilities. After living a few years in NOLA, you had a knack of picking them out in a crowd and treated them no differently than you’d treat anyone else. You had many run in’s with mutants on Bourbon Street, but none as impactful as the day you ran into Remy LeBeau.

*I just want to disclose I am not a comic expert. Gambit/Remy LeBeau is very new to me and I’m doing my best to stay genuine to what I’ve researched online or from what I’ve seen in the D&W movie. I’m aware there was a HUGE controversy over his heavy accent/dialect and over his eye color in the movie, so I tried to incorporate both versions of each in my stories to satisfy everyone’s preferred Gambit/Remy style. (Personally, I loved Channing Tatum’s accent in the movie ☺️) I’m also cognizant that Gambit and Rogue are an item in the comics, but for sanity sake, Rogue will be a pastime only mentioned in passing if absolutely necessary so I don’t have to study in depth another character I’m unfamiliar with. (I need some brain space for real life stuff, too 😅) Anyway, I’m doing my maximum effort over here writing for Gambit/Remy, so when I do post my developing Gambit story, please, if you have comments or criticisms that don’t benefit anyone else’s appreciation of these fanfics, keep them to yourself and let the rest of us enjoy it. It was a particularly busy night at Black Penny. As live bounce music and jazz blared from the stage, patrons dance and socialize carelessly with each other while you hotfoot from one end of the bar to the other serving up shots and beers.

You approach a man waiting patiently, his face downward hovering over a stack of playing cards.

“What can I getchya?” You ask him.

He began twirling an ace of spades between his fingers.

“(c) Kisa mwen ka jwenn pou ou?” You repeat.

The man lifted his gaze to meet yours with a mischievous grin stretching across his face. An eerie magenta glow softly radiated from his irises causing your jaw to drop. Your stunned reaction spurred him, causing his smile to widen and his eyes to glow brighter as the whites of his eyes began to blacken.

“….woah.” You say under your breath.

The man chuckled, “(c) Ou dwe padone Gambit, cheri (You must pardon Gambit). When his eyes see somethin’ so (f)dulcet (beautiful), it be hard to hide it.”

You shook your head to refocus, “No need to apologize. This is a safe space for everyone. Just caught me off guard is all.”

You flash him a smile and a wink as he returned one to you, the whites of his eyes returning to ‘human’ version of normal and his irises became a shade of icy green.

“Nobody be lookin’ at me like dat wit’out runnin’ off. You weren’t scared?”

“Of course not. Takes a lot more than a pair of flashy eyes on a handsome face to scare me away.” You state.

He laughed as he adjusted in his seat.

“Dats good, dats good.” He said as he leaned forward on the surface of the bar.

“What are you drinking, Gambit?” You ask again.

“Sazerac. (c) Mèsi, cheri. (Thank you, darling).”

You bring the gentleman a rocks glass fixed neat with the amber-red reserve bourbon. He gingerly raised the glass to his nose, inhaling the oak wood barrel scent with hints of cherry, caramel, apples, and tobacco.

He hummed with satisfaction, “(c) Manyifik (Magnificent).”

You nod, then turn to walk away.

“Remy.” You hear him call to you.

“Pardon?” You say as you turn back to him.

“The name’s Remy LaBeau.” He reiterated cooly after taking a sip from his glass.

He averted his eyes to you, awaiting your name. You grin back.

“Y/F/N.”

“(c) Kontan rankontre ou, Y/F/N (Pleased to meet you).”

You feel your face go red as you laugh nervously.

“Same.” You managed to say before scurrying to the other end of the bar to wait on other customers.

Remy sat quietly in his spot at the bar the entire evening, only ever looking up from his deck of Mavericks to catch a glance of you as you pass him. The crowd started to thin out as last call was announced.

“One for the road, Remy?”

He beamed at you, “Oui, cheri. If you join me for one.”

You smile coyly, “I gotta close up, chief. How about this; I’ll bring you another Sazerac on the house, and I’ll take a rain check?”

You see the magenta glimmer in his eyes again.

“I like the soun’ of dat, cheri.”

You smile and nod then turn to the counter behind you to prepare his drink. You set it in front of him as he placed a $100 in front of you.

“You only had two. That’s too much.”

“(c) Pran li (Take it). For your generosity an’ da company.” Remy insisted.

You beam at him, “(c) Ou twò janti (You’re too kind).”

He stood up from his stool, and fixed his collar on his leather trench.

“Until next time, mon cher.” He said smiling while standing tall opposite you.

“Orevwa, Remy. I’ll see you around.” You reply sweetly as you feel your cheeks heat up again.

“(c) Mwen pwomèt ou pral (I promise you will).” He purred in his heavy honeyed Cajun accent.

He bowed, then turned on his heel to exit the bar. You released a deep exhale as if you hadn’t taken a breath since having met him that night.

I mean, it was 50% off, so…

Ok, ok, ok ok. So. I have, shamefully, neglected studying Japanese for a long time. Back in like, 2021, we had to move across the whole country, and our Japanese friends moved back to Japan. Since then, I intended to continue studying Japanese so that I would be good to go when we go visit… it’s 2025 and I uh. Haven’t at all. I don’t remember much? There isn’t a Japanese community where we live now, so language practice is not an option. SO since I’ve become obsessed with this game, time to use it as a launch pad for Japanese language studies.

I have nothing else to do. Since this is the year of ‘Absolutely Not Allowed to do Anything Other Than Get Healthy’. Seems like a good use of my time! A few months ago I bought a few games that have both english and japanese, and started reviewing my old japanese textbooks from college, so I’m starting to remember a bit.

I’m also starting to get curious about all the stuff the english translation isn’t communicating. There are a few times where the translation says something different than what i’m hearing and I’ve noticed specifically unvoiced weekend scenarios get cut off or make incomplete sentences? and there are several times the translation just doesn’t make sense that I desperately want to see the original text.

I have also been keeping lists of the different ways a specific simple phrase in english is being translated in the game. Especially when that isn’t the actual thing being said? But my Japanese is so rusty that I sometimes have a hard time differentiating clauses. I figured it was about time that I just bought the game in Japanese and called it a day. I was going to see if I could buy the original release limited edition set from someone on mercari (because of the ‘another story’ novel only available in there) but the sale was too good to pass up.

Because ‘past passive potential’ concepts in Japanese don’t translate well to English.

I also purchased all the JJ novels, preordered the new one, and the foilage manga, and the artbook.

I would like to get the cds, but first!!! I cd drive (what is a disk drive???? lmfao I haven’t had a cd player in 20? years, god, I feel so old).

Also! Even better yet, I feel inspired to make fanworks!

The idea I have rn, is Tamasaka Troupe makes Neji finish I Am Death post game (he works for them now he can’t get out of it bwahahaha), and Kisa is cast as Al Jeanne (they own the school she can’t get out of it bwahahaha), as the culminating play for Chui before he graduates. I have some pictures in my head of what neji-route Gashadokuro could end up looking like / becoming (I like the costume/concept of that one in particular). I’m working on a fic now sorta but it’s only to establish scenes in my head for paintings… how to rework the play to make it more of a story (basically reinterpret the one from kai’s route, mostly?) so i have opportunities to add more of the cast, group dances and such. i don’t want to use too much from when neji was al jeanne, but it’s a given I’ll need to reference it. it won’t be a manga, more like an illustrated story most likely?

my friends sent me some nice paint brushes to congratulate me on surgery recovery, so i want to paintttttt. I’m sure the fine motor movement practice will help with recovering better use of my hands.

the plan, if my shoulder holds up to the strain, is to start playing the harp again soon! I mean, it has to lean against the shoulder that was operated on, so that might be hard but, soon!

Translation status/life things

Just wanted to let people know that I'm still working on Puppet. It took a while to get back to it after I moved but now I have some more help so I'm trying to make progress on it as I can.

I also started a while back trying to translate the first chapter of the big JJ novel since it was posted as a free sample and I think there's some stuff in it that's pretty significant about the kind of person Kisa is and her relationship with Tsuki.

I feel like birthday stuff was good for me since there were some natural deadlines but self-imposed ones can be more difficult to stick to. Adjusting to living most of my life in Japanese has also taken up a lot of day to day brainpower tbh.

For further reading inspired by this concept, you can check out charade's fic Divine Comedy, which came about as a result of the two of us discussing and collaborating on the possibilities of this theory in the fanworks club server last year.

Hold up, you have to delve deeper on the part of Kisa being an only child. Because then where does Tsuki fit in all of this.

I genuinely believe that Tsuki turned into the white furry animal with the moon symbol.

WHEW, I wish it was possible to give a short answer to this question, but it’s… not. I spent all afternoon cobbling together this messy theory essay for you. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on it!

Kisa route spoilers, Fumi route spoilers, bonus content spoilers, basically spoilers all over the place. Read at your own risk.

Okay so first of all, let’s take a look at their names.

Tachibana Kisa: 立花 希佐

Tachibana Tsuki: 立花 継希

The kanji for Tsuki meaning moon, which would be pretty normal to use for a name, is 月.

But as you can see, Tsuki’s name doesn’t use this. It actually uses a kinda weird combo of kanji used to make his name. And the second kanji in it, 希, is one that is also in Kisa’s name.

Now, it’s not like it’s unheard of to have siblings with matching names, it’s definitely possible their parents just chose names that would be cute together. But interestingly, there are actually a couple variations on ‘Kisa’ that do use the kanji for moon, such as 月彩 and 綺月. So if that were all it was, it would have been pretty easy to do, I imagine. But there’s also another possibility, which we’ll get into in a moment!

The game often translates references to Kisa’s name that use this word as ‘rare’, probably in reference to her rare talent or something. But this kanji can also be translated to mean ‘a wish, a hope/desire for something to happen’.

The first kanji in Tsuki’s name is 継 which can be translated to mean ‘succession/inheritance/continuation’. With those two kanji, we could infer that Tsuki’s name can be read as, ‘hope for an heir/successor’. This kanji can also be translated to mean ‘a connection/bond, to join or link together’ which is another thing I’ll come back to later.

The Tamasaka Troupe theatre legacy begins with Chuza Tsukihiko, the ancestor of Univeil’s current principal, Chuza Shuri. This is the deified figure to whom Himehiko Shrine is dedicated. I won’t get into it too much, but if you’ve played the Kisa route then you know there’s an ongoing power struggle over who will next inherit the Himehiko name and the Tamasaka power and legacy. Etc etc. So we know where this idea of ‘succession’ or ‘heir’ might be coming in.

In the beginning of the 'Moon Signpost' novel, a young Kisa (roughly 6 years old) is devastated after the death of her mother. She doesn’t eat or sleep and is basically catatonic from severe depression. The thing that finally draws her out of her unresponsive state is a strange experience with a mysterious woman who attempts to cheer her up—but this woman is actually her brother, Tsuki. (Or is it?)

In case you didn’t click, I’ll pluck out a few relevant lines from those first few paragraphs, and you can judge for yourself. (The “boy” in the context of these quotes is Kisa, she’s playacting as a boy for parts of the scene.)

The voice was sudden. Within the darkness of her closed eyes, a faint white light rose forth. It was in the shape of a woman she found familiar somehow.

Something else was weird. With her eyes closed, the hazy pure-white ring of light suddenly took a clear shape in front of her. "Good evening." This person was a beautiful smiling woman-- but not really. It was actually someone Kisa had known ever since she was born, her older brother of four years, Tsuki Tachibana. Her brother looked at her with a face she had never seen before. It was as if somehow the moonlight that crept in through the window had bathed his back in light, surrounding him in a delicate circle. Who is this person? Kisa wondered. Who am I? Maybe, maybe I'm not Kisa and he isn't Tsuki? But then, who are we? No wait, the answer was there from the beginning.

The woman beamed a smile, sang a song joyfully, took his hand and danced. The boy had seen this before. Just like.... Mom. The woman was just like her. The voice, mannerisms, everything. Like the boy's mother -- like Kisa's mother. No, it was just an imitation. Ever since her mother died, Kisa's heart had closed.

"Let's sing and dance together every day. I will be here for you." The woman smiled. Tsuki smiled. Even though Tsuki faced that same bitterness, sadness, loneliness. "In exchange for your mom who went to the moon, I will become a mom for you.”

The scene can be read in a couple different ways. It could be Tsuki is playing pretend at being their mother to cheer Kisa up, which I think is the intended surface reading.

It also could be that a spirit (in this case Tsukihiko) took on the form of Kisa’s mother to take her place (in the quest to raise Kisa to eventually become a suitable heir to the Himehiko name), but Kisa’s mind rejected the attempt as she could tell it was an imitation, and identified the spirit as her brother instead.

Kisa, canonically, can see and be possessed by ghosts, as evidenced by several events in the test of courage sequence in the game, but especially Kai’s variation. It’s possible that this is why she was not fooled by Tsukihiko’s attempt to act as her mother, if indeed that’s what was happening here.

(Editing to add: It's also possible that Tsukihiko has been guiding Kisa for several years at this point, and didn't realize that her ghost-seeing powers enabled her to actually see him prior to this and internalize him years ago as her 'brother'. ) (And in regards to Tsuki also facing 'that same bitterness, sadness, loneliness'... quick reminder here that Chui tells us in the Kisa route that Tsukihiko died from heartbreak.)

The figure left standing there was unmistakably her brother. It was late at night in an empty shrine where they had set their scene on the slide in the sandbox. The two of them stood on top of it, the place closest to the moon.

Interesting to note that this occurred on sacred ground—at a shrine. The same shrine that we know Kisa, Sou, and Tsuki will later always play pretend at, where Kisa discovers her love of acting. And Univeil itself is also on or very near sacred ground, because of its proximity to the sacred mountain, Mount Oodate. Because of this, as far as we know, it’s possible that Tsuki has never appeared anywhere that wasn’t sacred ground, or very close to it.

On the topic of Mount Oodate, Kai states that weasels like Tummy/Onaka are sacred animals who serve the mountain’s god. Pretty normal for high power spirits/deities to have smaller, weaker spirits serving them, and these smaller spirits frequently take on animal forms in Japanese folklore, so that all checks out. Also worth noting that the god of Himehiko Shrine (Himehiko aka Tsukihiko) and the god of Mount Oodate are not the same—as established by one of the townspeople in the game, the mountain god is much older and more powerful. Still, I think it’s not a stretch to think that the mountain’s sacred animals could be working with or have some other connection to the Himehiko Shrine god.

In the Sui Ishida art exhibition booklet, there’s an image of first year Tsuki and an accompanying scene (possibly cut from the game) that talks about him dancing a kagura dance. The story of the song is about Himehiko (presumably Tsukihiko?) calming the mountain god with a dance. (This might be related to the Himehiko curse in some way, but I don’t have the energy/resources to investigate that angle atm tbh) So we know there’s a connection here between Tsuki, Himehiko/Tsukihiko, and the god of Mount Oodate.

Kagura dance, by the way, is a type of sacred, ceremonial Shinto dance intended to appease and entertain the gods. So there’s a bit of a meta thing going on here: Tsuki, who might be Tsukihiko, is dancing a kagura dance depicting a Himehiko, who might also be Tsukihiko, dancing a kagura dance.

There are so few Tsuki scenes in the game (let alone ones with CGs!) that one has to assume this scene would have been intended to have some significance. Presumably, Tsuki is dancing for the mountain god here (though I suppose it would be funny if he were dancing for Himehiko!!) If so, what’s the significance of this scene? Maybe a reminder to the mountain god of Tsukihiko’s past loyalty? A request for divine aid in achieving his current goal to find a successor? If so, then Tummy’s presence would indicate the mountain god acquiesced…!

I don’t have them on hand, but there’s also a number of lines about Tsuki throughout the game that suggest something strange is going on. Fumi says that Tsuki never mentioned that he had a sister, and the conclusion that he draws from that is that maybe Tsuki believed that Kisa would attend Univeil herself and wouldn’t want to cause difficulty for her to do so by mentioning her (girl) existence. But honestly that’s a bit of an insane conclusion to draw. Why would Tsuki have ever assumed there was a possibility that Kisa would come to Univeil, and therefore he should keep his mouth shut? As far as we know, he didn’t talk to Kisa about the possibility or encourage her to try. So where would that assumption have come from?

There are also a few other things mentioned—Tsuki identifies Kai’s talent long before Neji does, and expresses to Fumi that he might be a good Jack Ace. Tsuki is described as having a strong affinity for animals, who tend to trust him. He’s also described as hanging back from social interaction and just watching his classmates with amusement instead of getting involved. When he’s on stage, he seems to prioritize having fun and making sure everyone else on stage with him is having fun too. All of these things could indicate he’s just a really cool senpai who’s super gifted at theatre… or that he’s the physical manifestation of a playful theatre god. It makes at least as much sense as the 'turned into a weasel' theory, imo!

Chuza Shuri also says (I believe this is in the Kisa route) that he felt like he was being pulled by a supernatural force to the shrine that led him to discover Kisa. It’s a quick, offhand line, but it’s not likely to be the kind of line you’d put in if it didn’t mean something. Tummy went to get Kisa, the spirit of Tsukihiko went to get his descendant, and the two of them met “by chance” at that shrine. Hmmm…!!

Okay, back to six-year-old Kisa for a moment.

"You are not 'my' mother." Kisa smiled as she spoke. "You are Tsuki Tachibana. My big brother."

How many times had her brother's name passed her lips, she wondered. "Tsuki, if I lost even you too, it would be horrible." Kisa gripped her brother's hands firmly. They were bigger than hers, but his small palms were far from the size of an adult's. She squeezed even tighter, to keep this from disappearing. As if melted away by the heat, the woman who danced so beautifully holding hands with the boy began to vanish.

Kisa is the one who says this person’s name is Tsuki, identifying him as someone with a name eerily similar to ‘Tsukihiko’. It’s interesting that Kisa also wonders ‘how many times her brother’s name has passed her lips’—why point that out specifically? Perhaps because this is actually the first time?

Names are of vital significance in the folklore of cultures all over the world, and Japan is not an exception. To manifest itself, we might assume that this spirit borrowed a kanji from Kisa’s name, 希, and combined it with the kanji for a bond, 継— creating 継希, the ‘wish for an heir’, pronounced ‘Tsuki’. Thus the spirit of Tsukihiko takes on human form (an akitsumikami, 明神, the physical incarnation of a god) and becomes Tsuki Tachibana—the brother that Kisa now believes she has had all her life.

In conclusion, though neither she nor anybody else knows it anymore… Kisa Tachibana is an only child.

Selfishly tying up your hands and feet, taking an embarrassing picture, and finally, identifying him as [kind] just because he removed the towel, is that alright? After worrying endlessly, he flicked my forehead. [What are you making a difficult face for?] In an exasperated tone, my mouth let out displeased words. [It’s your fault. I mean, sensei, about me, you thought I was easy, right?] Falling easily just because I was approached, I feel pathetic. Saying it somewhat frustrated, he made a seriously surprised face. [Hah? i think that pretty much concludes my thoughts on ch32 and when i was reading it i didn’t have as much of a kick as i usually do but then again it’s probably bc it acts as a filler chapter more than anything we’re just introduced to a bunch of different subplots and nothing is Actually happening ..... but at the same time nakamura injects a lot of ritsu’s development into key scenes and since my ass likes it the most when i see ritsu at work i’m just really looking forward to how shit plays out with fujishiro and then also with his confession and in general seeing him healthy and happy and successful and kicking ass i love him Very much u___u

its 2:26 am rn but this has been sitting in my inbox for a while and i feel vv bad anon, so! (Note: Please if you disagree with anything said here, message me to discuss it, or send an ask telling me the canon material which proves me as wrong (or just say u disagree but b nice and dont tell me im wrong, like back urself up if ur gonna say that) but dont just. vague me/repost my stuff) also under a keep reading because it got long

“word of god from unreliable sources shouldn’t be used to ignore canon” = linuj giving a chart which puts the CoU as younger than the Kisaragi foundation, which was given out by the Eng dub server which has consciously spread misinfo before (see: the rumor about sora being confirmed as straight) while saying it was from linuj, shouldnt be used as a reason to ignore the line in chapter 6 which confirms that the CoU were high schoolers. (a note from later in the post: whenever i say kisaragi foundation, i mean rei teruya and tsurugi)

to break that down some: no one in sdra2 has a confirmed age. we can try to use the knowledge we have from dra translations, and then use math and estimates, but even then, we cant confirm the dra cast as being born in a certain year, which is relevant i promise. the closest we have is a drawing of setsuka in her 30s, but it’s not stated if that’s how old she is - in fact, if it were, then why not call it a drawing of adult setsuka? i also think shinji states his age in yuukis ideal fantasy but knowing he’s the oldest just gives us a max limit for how old the others can be. So we know, based off the chart, that the CoU are “around the same age as, but slightly younger than” the kisa foundation. i think specificially, it’s that they’re in the same general age range, which in my post i said was >5 years of difference, iirc, but please check that post for precise info on that.

but moving on to the next bit: the engdub server hasn’t been reliable (and i mean this with no hate or discontent towards anyone there, though i do have issue with some of the morals of mods there + how that situation was handled) when it comes to giving information released “from linuj” while the western fandom was going through some bit of mass drama. i don’t believe i was really involved/aware of/around when the rumors about sora being straight were going around, however; while i know the age twist was more dramatic than that whole situation, wouldn’t that be more incentive to release placating information to calm down the fandom? people were discussing leaving/losing interest in sdra2 after the age twist/chapter 6 in general, which gives a nice carryover to our next thing

Linuj consistently releases information that does nothing for canon except contradict it, and he does this on his site, not adding it into the game itself. If something cannot be determined from ingame material, then it is considered word of god. this is different from a creator confirming something implied, this is when a creator adds in something entirely new, with the most well known example i can thing of being JK Rowling calling Dumbledore gay after the series completion. it’s something not explicitly shown in canon, it is something not hinted at or implied in canon, it’s something stated after canon was finished - and even worse, it directly conflicts canon. Linuj has added things into the game to pander into fans jokes and desires, and is aware of what happens in the western fandom when it comes to major things. He’d know about the panic and discontent with the age twist, so assuming the chart was real, it’s still word of god that contradicts canon and was likely created to pacify fans who were upset and planned on ditching sdra2

my final main point: about how it conflicts with canon. i cant recall exactly when, and i’d have to go back through the ch 6 streams to find out (which i will do if necessary, but its now 2:56 am and im hoping people will just respectfully disagree + streams so long...) but it is stated, in chapter 6, as a relevant piece of information, that the children of utsuro were high schoolers while the game happened. additionally, we know that linuj gives the DRA cast different designs compared to when they were high schoolers and how old they are in sdra2, so considering that the CoU have the same design out of simulation, should show that they’re high schoolers, at a similar age, but still younger than, the kisa foundation trio, who are at an unknown age. i wrote out a bit about how the chart can coexist with canon but im making it the tl;dr instead

and none of this is to say you have to denounce any concept where the CoU are adults! you can have your aus, you can have old theories which you follow more than canon (*cough cough* rip mastermind kinjo*)! the reason i made that comment is because i was tired of people using unreliable word of god to discourage others who followed explicit canon material. we know from the main canon games, and it is not contradicted or disproven by any canon material (the series is complete) that the CoU are high schoolers. so yeah use the age chart for who you think is older than who, make content of the CoU where they’re adults, whatever. but acknowledge all of the flaws and inconsistencies with something not canon to the game, which contradicts the game, and don’t use it to attack people who follow the game

TL;DR the unreliable chart which was released post-canon from someone known for playing into fans wants, can even coexist with the canon knowledge that they’re high schoolers, but it shouldn’t be used to say that they’re adults when it doesn’t say that.

Another cute moment! Such a great group shot :)

- Lol that background convo that Yuki, Kisa, Hiro and Haru were having about Mogeta and them debating whether it was a mystery, adventure or romance pretty much reminds me of every time I try to explain furuba to newbies. I’d probably automatically go for romance cos kyoru is always my first thought when it comes to this anime, I can’t help myself.

- The convo between Kyo and Momiji about whether leaving Tohru behind was beneficial to Tohru or not was interesting, especially when you attach it to Momiji’s later actions in the episode. But, I also wish they sat Tohru down and explained to her how dangerous Akito was instead of just keeping a happy pretence (this anime is full of people putting on brave faces for people and it’s kinda grating on me a bit, if I’m being fully honest). BUT, then again, I guess that’s a side effect of the curse and their cursed loyalty to Akito.

After the beach arc ends, I really hope this is the last we get of Akito being presented by the animators as the evilest of evils because I’m personally getting to the point where I just wanna understand what’s Akito’s fuckin deal instead of just saying I hate them every week haha

- Momiji really is the Best Boi of this whole beach arc cos of this episode. He REALLY tried to rationally calm down Akito as well as try and protect Tohru at the same time. And even though it didn’t work out for the best, I definitely think he had the best approach in protecting Tohru. Best bunny. 🥺

Oh wow. That... was a... punch... 😣 (I always thought Akito slapped Momiji in the manga but either way: booooo 👎🏾)

- I find it fascinating that Akito uses words like ‘save’ and ‘help’ for Tohru’s actions even though they find her ‘monstrous’... Maybe it’s a translation thing. 

But all this time, I’ve been trying to work out whether:

Akito is being petty when it comes to Tohru 

Akito truly believes that they are the villain of the story or

Akito believes the zodiac curse is as it should be and nothing should disturb that. 

Maybe it’s a collection of all three. But for the most part, I’m gonna go with the third option. However, I do wonder why they are so insistent on everything being as it should be even though it’s limiting and inconvenient for everyone, including Akito themselves... 

I’m just gonna leave it at that otherwise I’ll start going into spoilers lol

Even though I have a grand dislike for Akito, I gotta admit...

Akito finally being revealed as the personification of ‘God’ was pretty badass.

- I love the fact that Haru had to hold Kyo back from fucking Akito up but then it becomes sad when you realise that even if he was let loose he probably wouldn’t be able to really hurt Akito because of the curse...

Head bumps! <3 I’m curious to see what Momiji/Tohru shipping content comes out after this episode! While I don’t personally ship it, I’m interested in what people like about this ship! I can’t help but always see their relationship as a ‘big sis, little bro’ dynamic but this is an interesting ship.

This was a good one! I don’t feel like my emotions and thoughts towards Akito are defined yet and I feel like I might have more questions than I ever did 10 years ago but I’m excited! 

Also, a bit of food for thought... how would you guys feel about a live action Fruits Basket? Out of all of the anime I watch, I feel like this would be the most easy to adapt and the most exciting to see whom would be cast as who so I’m for it!

Thoughts on Fruits Basket 2019 2nd Season Ep6: “Are You Stupid?”

In an extremely shocking turn of events, this episode adapts THREE chapters of the manga, instead of two!

Oh and also the beach arc started I guess lol

Thoughts under the cut.

I really have to stop trying to guess exactly how this show is going to translate things from the manga to the anime, but that’s not going to stop me, lol.

Anyway this episode adapted chapters 53, 54, and 55, and it ended up working way better than I expected. I think this is either the first or second time the show’s adapted more than two chapters in a single episode, so I was worried about if it’d feel rsuhed, but it really didn’t, since they cut out a lot of the more minor scenes, and rearranged the timeline of events to tie it all together more. 

Basically, to start with, they got rid of the aspect of chapter 53 where Rin breaks Tohru’s window to distract everyone while she talks to Shigure, and everyone has to deal with fixing the window, and they replaced it with Rin just showing up to talk to Shigure right after Tohru and co leave for the beach, which I think was a really good change. I feel like everything to do with the window getting smashed would have felt really jarring with how the whole scene was paced, and it makes more sense that Rin would just wait until Shigure’s alone to talk to him, instead of doing something really dumb and reckless to try and make a distraction.

And on the note of that scene with her and Shigure, I think manga readers should remember that this is exactly how the scene plays out in the manga, and we don’t get a proper flashback to how their conversation went until a bit later in the story. So they didn’t cut anything out there.

They also rearranged the flow of events with the start of the beach arc itself to make it go by quicker, mainly by having Kisa and Hiro be there with everyone immediately, which helps condense a lot of scenes together. They also cut a whole scene related to everyone picking out their rooms once Kisa and Hiro showed up, and I think it was probably worth removing in order to make the episode go by faster.

As a consequence of bringing Kisa and Hiro into things earlier, the drama with Hiro being rude to Tohru and stirring up her deeply repressed trauma happens a bit earlier than it did in the manga.

They also spread out some of the content with Yuki across the episode to build up toward the episode’s climax being the scene with him and Tohru. Which included them holding back on the reveal of him being the boy Tohru got the hat from until the end of the episode, which I think was a good choice.

It’s kinda funny seeing so many anime-only people talking about how they don’t really get how this whole plot point could be that important in the long run, even after what this episode told us about it. I can’t really blame anyone for thinking that, since the anime hasn’t really gotten into it at all yet, but it’s definitely way more important than people would think, and for different reasons than they might expect. I think a lot of people will be surprised that it doesn’t actually have a whole lot to do with Tohru’s relationships with Yuki and Kyo, and is instead more about Yuki and Kyo’s backstories and their conflict with each other.

I can see why people might still think this episode is fast-paced, and it kinda was, but they cut out enough material that it didn’t end up feeling like they were fitting three whole chapters of content into one episode.

Anyway, this is where the beach arc officially kicks off, and it’s becoming pretty clear to everyone why this arc is a big deal, lol. There’s all sorts of relationship development going on, and everyone’s getting forced to acknowledge all the emotional baggage they’ve been repressing. And now Akito’s gonna come around just to stir shit up.

In particular it feels really exciting to see the anime finally get to the point where the story officially begins to really dig into Tohru’s backstory and her own emotional baggage. It’s been hinted at before, especially in this second season, but this is where the story spells out in bright neon letters that she has her own trauma she’s dealing with, and other characters are starting to notice.

In a lot of ways I really relate to the specific kind of trauma and baggage that Tohru’s dealing with in regards to both of her parents, and I really like the extremely slow-burn way the story builds it up. The scene with her sitting alone on the balcony and quietly reassuring herself that she’s fine and that she’ll always be with her mother is just really emotional, especially when you know her backstory.

But I won’t bother getting into that until the story decides to delve into it more later on.

We of course also got all sorts of stuff with Yuki in this episode that reinforces and continues to build up his own trauma that he’s still dealing with, and that’s definitely gonna come to a head sooner rather than later, lol. Everything with Tohru is sorta left on the backburner until much later in the story, but this arc really digs into Yuki and Kyo’s issues. Kyo hasn’t gotten a whole lot of focus yet in this arc, aside from him being super cute and us getting even more examples of how he’s slowly becoming more understanding and perceptive toward Tohru, but his time to shine will definitely come before this arc ends.

Also, one thing I wanna mention is that the bit where Momiji lists off all the people he invited to the beach trip seems to be anime original, which is interesting. For one thing it was there so they could include the scene with Kisa and Hiro getting their invitations earlier than the manga did, but more than that it sticks out to me that he included Ritsu in the list of people he invited. Which is interesting because in the manga Ritsu isn’t even mentioned in this arc at all. So I’m wondering if they might be planning to include him in this arc in the anime, though the fact that he wasn’t in this episode outside of that one line makes me unsure.

It’d be really nice if they included him, though. It’d at least help mitigate the fact that he gets like literally zero screen-time in the manga between his intro arc and the final volume or two. I’m pretty sure that Takaya’s said before that it wasn’t exactly an intentional choice on her part, and was more a mix of her just forgetting he existed, and her not really knowing how to fit him into the story. So it’d be nice if the anime could come up with it’s own ways to give him more screen-time instead of him just vanishing off the face of the earth, but we’ll see. I think Takaya would be on board with it, at least, since she seems to regret how little screen-time he got in the manga.

Anyway, the next episode title seems to imply that [for now] we’re skipping the chapters focused on Hatori and Mayu, and jumping straight to chapters 58 and 59. Which I’m happy with, since I’ve honestly been hoping they’d push that arc to later on, so it wouldn’t be a jarring diversion from the beach arc. After how much this episode set up, I think anime only people would have really disliked it if the next episode took a hard left turn into focusing 100% on Hatori and Mayu. I feel like the beach arc is where the manga really finds it’s groove in terms of pacing and things feel less erratic and episodic, but that whole arc always felt like it was awkwardly placed in the story. And honestly since it has barely anything to do with the beach arc aside from taking place in summer, I think it’d be really easy to just change the timing for it and have it happen later on. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they push it all the way to season 3, lol. But we’ll see. At the very least if they’re not gonna adapt it in the next episode, I think it’s at least getting pushed back to after the beach arc’s done.

Wow, so coming off of a lean week, we get a lot of uh, punch, to the shipping totals. Wow. Wowie. Masterpost here.

+20 to Fjord/Caduceus as Caduceus proves once again what a fantastic Charisma Partner he makes with Fjord as they work together in perfect sync to bring the giants to their side. Featuring 1) Fjord draping his arm around Caduceus (!!!) and 2) Caduceus initiating Fjord’s favorite “I work for Fjord” roleplay (!!!!!!!!!). Besides that, muchos complimentos on both sides, even if Caduceus’ pleasure with Fjord taking his side and saying “You’re usually the voice of caution” conveniently ignores how Fjord’s reckless actions rarely ever line up with what his cautious mouth says. Fjord making goopy eyes when Caduceus admits of his altruistic plans that he can “be on the soft end of things” and making something perilously close to a romantic declaration when he says, “I trust your heart, Caduceus. It’s in a good place.” And lest it be forgotten, Caduceus fucking saving Fjord’s life from Mosquito Man. Keep that cleric close, Fjord! Romance him if that’s what it takes!

+15 to Caduceus/Every Single NPC. As per usual, Caduceus’ classic fairy tale princess sweetness  and Common Courtesy earns the implicit trust of everyone within a ten mile radius—all the giants like him, and only him, absolutely no one else.

+4 to Beau/Sensing Bullshit as she is the only person who picks up on and seems concerned about how Caduceus seems to think this mountain clearing quest is related to his personal quest for……no discernible reason. Are we concerned about the vagueness? No? All right then. Something is off about that dude, even if he’s not secretly plotting to murder the M9 in the mountain caves.  

-2 to Yeza/Nott as Nott entertains about five billion separate fears over the eventual demise of her marriage and beats herself up over having locked the poor man (who just got out of prison btw) in a hotel room and ditched him. Point loss ameliorated as Caleb musters All The Powers of Friendship to lift her spirits with a firm hand, telling her sure, she might be a bit of an adventure addict, but he is as sure as he can be that Yeza truly loves her now and always, that he, Caleb, is glad that she’s here, and that thinking in the macro she can do whatever she likes with no guilt because she is Good, and they are all doing Good together (a moving speech also earning +6 to Caleb/Hopebringer) 

+0 to Jester/Caleb. Pluses: Caleb giving Jester a risque locket, claiming it’s magical and “gives you access to balloon porn” just to make her smile. Caleb’s absolute faith in Jester’s swoleness in thinking she can absolutely just crack a chest open like a nutcracker who needs finesse? Jester thinking of Caleb first when she thinks of who needs healing #ItPaysToBeADamselInDistress. Unfortunately, all these points are flushed down the drain when Caleb coldly exiles Jester from the Tiny Hut when she gets the runs. She couldn’t have stayed inside, but you could have been nicer about it—she’s already suffering! 

+0 to Jester/Yasha On the one hand, it was very cute of Yasha to try to share her favorite food with Jester while risking the ire of the giants, very cute of Jester to try to bond with Yasha over this excellent tasting land food. But all point gains were forcibly expelled once Jester got the runs. The universe punishes those who tread too close to the Yasha ship.

+2 to Nott/Jester The word around the lab is that secretly Jester just wants to be a Knight In Shining Armor, which is why one of the most effective ways to gain points with her is to a) buy her shiny armor and b) allow her to protect you as a true KISA would. Today featuring: 1) Jester channeling her inner Aladdin with a “Do you trust me?” and Romantic Proffering of a Hand to Nott before whisking her away to the top of a tower, and 2) Jester hoisting Nott up by the waist so Nott can more efficiently murder their enemies.

+3 to Caleb/Cat Shaped Creatures as he debuts another sexy cat paw spell to dramatically tear down a gate for his grand Cat Person entrance to the battlefield. Was sadly prevented from showing off the full murdering capabilities of the cat paw, however. Points taken away for covering Frumpkin in mud For Stealth, which pisses Frumpkin off.

+1 to Jester/Soorna as Jester awkwardly tries to flirt Soorna into friendliness,petting her and complimenting her bald head which looks “really nice and stuff”

+20 to Fjord/Detective Work as Fjord’s investigation yields 1) exactly the kind of humiliating material they need to absolutely destroy the foreman, and 2) A fuck ton of healing potions! Including a greater! Very sexy cool of him, as Jester very perceptively notes. Unfortunately hasn’t started investigating for a riftmaking device—yet

+1 to Fjord/Caleb as once more their tag-teaming over Detective Work yields amazing (and this time, saucy!) results. Fjord supporting Caleb’s hopeful plan to bring the giants along with them and leave them to die in the mountain if things take a turn for the worse. Their minds—they think alike.

-3 to The Mighty Nein/Boxes as neither Nott, Yasha, nor Jester (on her first try) were able to open the box with the Humiliation Material—it takes some creative artistry from Jester to manage it.

+20 to Beau/Jester as Beau proves that true love is there for you in sickness and in health, being the only one of the Mighty Nein to sit with Jester through her spider-meat induced illness, holding her hair out of her face, dealing gently and uncomplainingly with frankly an incredible amount of grossness which automatically makes Beau a shipping hero and a hero in all future beaujester sickfic. The pair of them getting equally psyched up about the pornographic Humiliation Material, with Beau requesting a dramatic reading of the letter from Jester (Caleb sucks at voices anyway). Beau also continuing to embody the shipping spirit of Molly by invoking the Slap/Punch of Love to return her love interest back to consciousness. Not even an Attempted Cockblocking from Nott insisting Beau is an enemy manages to put a damper on the moment. A+ UnStraight Out of Fanfic Material.

+23 to Fjord/Jester as, although Fjord rolls his eyes and tells Jester to leave the moorbounders for once, earning a death threat from our dear cleric, he cleverly forestalls massive point loss by bringing up the “L” word. Cute, mischievous, also kind of horrible on the flirting front (as evidenced by annoyed head shake from our dear cleric) because you need to jive with Jester’s love of animals if you want any chance at a long-term relationship. However, the moorbounder conversation earns all the points, with Fjord and Jester having a lovely disagreement over which of them should get the healing potion because they love each other so much (fuck the rest of the M9, potential love interests Caleb and Beau included). Fjord trying and failing to pretend that he cares about animals, misidentifying the type of creature Yarnball is two times and asking adorably dumb questions about her in an attempt to Bond With The Jester. He’s right though—he is being disarming. Minor point loss for the awkwardness nearly giving me the spins, and +2 to Caleb/Cockblocking for his pornographic jewelry gift thoroughly ruining Fjord’s moment with Jester. +10 to Mosquito Man/Cockblocking for preventing Jester from Knight in Shining Armor-ing Fjord with a lollipop to Mosquito Man skull, and making her pass out instead. Fainting Maiden is the wrong archetype!

+1 to Caleb/Fjord/Jester as Jester nags Caleb into telling her whether the balloon porn necklace is magical, and Fjord gets increasingly cute at her in his attempts to get her to settle down and leave poor Caleb in peace to translate. The thought was lovely but unnecessary—Caleb can tune all you motherfuckers out whenever he so desires.

+5 to Beau/Listening because despite claiming not to be listening in on your conversation, she can definitely repeat back word for word everything that was said. Not sure that this is what Dairon had in mind, but…

+19 to Caleb/Caduceus “What about that Caduceus though??” Caleb asks with the same “Wowie wowwow” tone he used while charmed by a succubus a few days previously. This man, absolutely starstruck by Caduceus’ ability to be such a sweetheart he can win over complete enemies to their side (bonus if he did it with dick jokes, Attempted Cockblocking from Nott and Beau notwithstanding), all while Caleb was busy thinking of the most efficient way to murder em all. Staring at Caduceus, stunned over his everything, agreeing to his plan because That’s What Caduceus Wants To Do. Caleb doing That Thing He Does where he aggressively bosses someone into being the Leader, because Caleb is not the Leader, he just Commands everyone to listen to the Real Leader—this week snatching the title away from Fjord who has hoarded the privilege previously, and bestowing it on Caduceus, all “we will all look to you,” at him. Saying “you can’t argue with results” which is as good as a love confession from Mr. McPractical, Need-Goals-Met. Caleb finding an excellent excuse to get handsy by picking the firbolg to grab onto while scouting through Frumpkin. Not to mention, Caleb and Caduceus finding a surprisingly compatible decision-making balance between Caleb’s Cutthroat “We Can Always Murder Our Allies If We Need To” pragmatism and Caduceus’ Sweet But Not Overly Invested “Everyone Can Win Here” diplomacy. These two definitely like each other’s opinions and decisions a hell of a lot….

+40 to Soorna/Revenge as despite being a druid she manages a HDYWTDT on her demonic foe Without! Casting! A! Single! Spell! It’s… hot.

I will ask to the authors first and hoping they will accept!! Translating without authorization is uncalled for. They are interessants. 

But I will try to resume you one of my favorite a story called game of thrones (well, that’s how I translated the tittle lmao) and it’s about the old maid trying to break appart Shigure and Akito in post curse

(you know, her) 

She compare a lot how Shigure and Ren were and how they bad people for the family and especially for Akira/Akito. Because for her Shigure is not legitimate and he used to hurt Akito for long and now they’re like...going out ??? wtf? Akito, he slept with Ren, wtf?? Akito? And Shigure being Shigure, he is insensitive and he is direct and say stuff like ‘yo, can you please stop using Akito as a Akira subtitute?’ (in the fanfic we saw a lot of flashback, and the maid taking care of Akira in his young day)

So, she go to Hatori and start to rant about Shigure and say stuff like ‘a least Kureno was a decent person but that man...He was a writer? How can he help to be the clan chief assistant?’

and Hatori is like ‘well, first, he given up writting to help Akito full-time, and second, during college, he did take classes so actually, he do know how to manage and help her.’  and she’s like ‘ahw, fuck’

So she makes all a plan to break them up and propose a thing like ‘well, now that’s the curse is over, maybe we should retire the curse help to the cursed children parents?’ (in the manga, if you remember, all cursed had family income, but since the younger generation is still under-age, it’s the parents who have the money.) And Akito is like ‘oh yeah, great idea’ 

Basically, the rest of the fanfic is the parents ranting about their children, like, Kisa mother telling that she won’t trust somebody who hurt her daughter (and she’s right) and this continue until somebody say that ‘yo, your assistant is the ex-dog, won’t Shigure family try to get money too??’ and then they try to trash and until after Shigure and Akito announce that they would like to marry and all and the family is like ‘omfg, congratulations??’ (I love it because Shigure mother learn that he is in relationship with Akito at this moment, it’s hilarous). Then the maid told her real thought in front of the gathering like ‘why would you stay with him when he and Ren-’ (she stop in the middle of the sentence because she notice Akito pained face)

But then, more trouble, Kyo’s dad want Kyo to be imprisonned, Akito refuse, blabla and then Kyo’s dad try to hit Akito but Shigure go between them and take the hit and because of that, every parents standed by her side. The maid, understanding that Shigure took her place, she decide to leave but Akito try to tell her to stay in the sohma estate by her side. The maid said that she hurt her too much and that she might continue, that she saw Akito as a subtitute of Akira. But Akito is like ‘yeah...But, you were the one who stayed at my side when I had high fever, who were always the one by my side when I was young...’ (basically, Akito told her that she is kind of her mother figure??) but even so, the maid decide to leave because she don’t want to hurt her anymore and she know Shigure already took her place as the one sharing her life.

So then the maid decide to leave, but Shigure walk into her and told her that Akito will more listen her than him, mainly about her health ‘she is so into work that she forget to eat or almost don’t sleep, she won’t listen him but Akito will listen you, so it’s better if you stay’ 

And this convice the maid who decide to stay and she start to think ‘ah, Shigure is really a nice man, he understand Akito very well, maybe I judged him too much, from now, I will be faithful to master Akito and master Shigure’ and then she walk into Shigure fucking Akito, noticing that the maid saw smile and continue (Akito didn’t know because she has her back to the maid?). And then the maid is like ‘fuck off, I’m going to makes this man disappear so fucking much-’

 Chapter 22.5

This is the extra at the end of Volume 11, and it takes place after the Emerald Editing Department’s trip to the onsen to buy Isaka-san’s udon is unfortunately prolonged by inclement weather. This is right after the chapter where Takano and Onodera visit Takano’s grandmother’s grave. Basically, they were supposed to go back to Tokyo, but flights were cancelled because of a major storm, so they were stuck another day at the onsen.
