Are writers and artists allowed to sign up as an automatic pair? I think I saw smth about it on the q&a but couldn't find it again

Yes, you’re absolutely able to do that! Just make sure that you both write in your partner’s username on the question on the sign-up sheet where it asks if there’s anyone you would like to work with specifically as a predetermined pair

2025 Klapollo Minibang signups are OPEN!

Between now and May 17th, you're able to sign up to participate in the fifth annual Klapollo Minibang. This event pairs writers and artists together to create a 5k-10k fanfic with accompanying art over a three-month period.

Please read through our Rules and FAQs document before filling out the signup form. We'll be sending out emails with your roles and a link to the Discord server on May 21st.

It's almost time...signups for the 2025 Klapollo Minibang open today, April 26th, at noon EDT, and will be open until Saturday, May 17th!

In preparation for signups, please make sure you've read through the Rules/FAQ doc--there's important info on there that you'll need for the signup form. However, here's the answer to a few commonly-asked questions:

What IS a minibang, anyway?

A minibang is a smaller version of a fandom event known as a “Big Bang.” It’s an opportunity for artists and writers to collaborate to produce a 5k-10k fic and an illustration that goes with it. Writers and artists will be paired up, and will all post their work during the event’s specified posting window.

Can I write more than 10k?

Technically, yes--we won't stop you! But we typically advise trying to keep to the shorter word count and coming up with an idea that will be smaller in scope than you think you'll need it to be. It's always easier to expand a shorter fic than it is to cut down on a longer idea, and you never know what's going to happen in your life over the course of the minibang. If you need help trimming your ideas down, we're more than happy to help during the brainstorming period before your prompts are due in!

Who can participate?

Anyone who’s interested! We don’t have an age limit for participation—you just need to be able to commit to finishing either one art piece or one 5k-10k fic before the deadline.

What genres are permitted?

Any genre of fic/art is permitted as long as the final piece would not be rated higher than a T on AO3’s scale. For reference, we’re defining this rating tier as similar to a PG-13 movie, with Ace Attorney canon-typical levels of violence.

what have been the number of people over the years? :0 i was in it last year and there were about 100 people total, is it more or less this year so far?

So far we’ve got just over 100 people signed up, with a majority being artists. We’ve still got four days of sign-ups left, so we don’t quite have a final total yet, but it seems in line with previous years’ participation!

might be a silly question, but do preestablished writer/art pairs (before event), need to give the mods their idea/pitch even if it’s not gonna be put in the pitch sheet

Not a silly question at all! Typically we do have preestablished pairs add their pitch into the general pitch sheet, as this is one of the primary ways we keep track of pairings. We’ll add your artist partner into the “artist” slot of the sheet before it opens to general selection, to ensure everyone knows the pitch is already claimed.

hey! how do writer prompts/artist claims work? i have a document with all my ideas planned out in chapters, (maybe i should actually pay attention in math class lmfao), woukd we have to share these documents or put just a general idea into something else? also when does the email for the discord go out tmrw?

Hey there! As mentioned in our FAQ:

We’ll ask the writers to give a brief description of their fic idea, and will allow artists to claim fics based on these summaries. Once all fics ideas have been claimed, we’ll reveal the pairings! 

You'd be able to put down an "elevator pitch" for your fic on the prompt claims sheet, and then once all prompts have been claimed and you have an artist partner, you'd be able to share that document with your artist partner so they can get started as soon as possible on their companion piece!

Emails for the discord server will be sent out tomorrow, 5/1/22, at 7 AM CST! 🎸🎶

Hello! I was wondering how familiar we were expected to be with the actual games Klapollo appear in. I'm very familiar with them as characters but the games aren't accessible to me right now. I would be more interested in signing up as an artist and working with what's provided by the writer if that helps ^^

This is more than fine! Last year, we had several writers write AU’s—needing to know the in’s and out’s of the games themselves are not necessary to participate in the minibang and have a lot of fun!

No worries! Invites to the discord server will be sent out the next day after sign-ups close: May 1st! This way, writers will be able to have a full week to brainstorm and submit initial story pitches.

What if the word count exceeds 10K?

Great question! We ask if you think you'll exceed the word count mainly just so we have an idea of if we should have different word count goals for check-ins based on fic length. Additionally, artists who want to create more than one piece for the minibang might prefer working with someone whose fic is going to be on the longer side in order to have more scenes to choose from. There's no definitive requirement to stay under 10k words, and in fact a lot of contributors in the 2021 minibang ended up writing longer stories.

Basically, we just want to know for logistics purposes--there's no consequence for exceeding the upper bounds of the word count.

Hi! When you say a writing pinch hitter, what does that entail? Would they be expected to complete a seperate 5-10k fic on short notice based off of the person who dropped out's pitch?

It entirely depends on the pinch hitter's capabilities and the timeframe they're being asked to take on a second partner for the minibang! ❤️

Last year, there were several instances we needed writer pinch hitters to step up late in the creation period, but due to the timeframe/constraint, they were not required at all to meet the 5k wordcount goal. Short oneshots ~1k were more than welcome. It's completely up to the writer and their new artist partner if they want to stick with the original pitched idea or create a new idea together. Most times, we saw pinch hitters and their partners elect to create something new together instead of stick to the old pitch.

In the end, the minibang's purpose is to have fun. This isn't a project that will be sold/is intended to be a polished product, so it's not like the 5k minimum is a hard rule for pinch hitter writers.

Does it have to be specifically romantically? Or can be very plaotnically, with hints of romantic interest in the future, like I have an idea for. Like a ambigious ending kind of thing, but hinting hevaily at that?

Not necessarily! Hints of romantic interest in the future, with an ambiguous ending, is also completely fine and acceptable. We look forward to seeing your ideas! ❤️
