Joffrey Velaryon & Tyraxes - Relationship Analysis

This analysis blends established events and descriptions from Fire & Blood with interpretive context and logical inferences based on the known historical setting, character traits, and narrative tone of George R. R. Martin’s work.

Prince Joffrey Velaryon and his dragon Tyraxes by Jota Saraiva

I. Dragon Hatching

Prince Joffrey Velaryon was the youngest son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Laenor Velaryon, born in 117 AC, proceeded by two older brothers, Jacaerys and Lucerys. Because all three boys had brown hair and eyes, (opposite to their parents who both had Valyrian features), they were widely belived to be bastards, fathered by Ser Harwin Strong.

King Viserys, determined to rid his grandsons of slander, had a dragon egg put in the cradle of each of the boys. All three eggs hatched and three princes each bonded with a dragon of their own, for Joffrey that was Tyraxes.

II. Early Bond

From an early age Prince Joffrey Velaryon displayed a strong bond with his dragon. At the age of three, he sneaked out of his bed to see Tyraxes, showing affectionate bond which they had already by then.

Always an early riser, Joff had sneaked down from his bed to see his own young dragon, Tyraxes.

Before reaching Tyraxes, he spotted his uncle, Prince Aemond, approching recently riderless Vhagar. He shouted at him to stay away from her, but was pushed into a pile of dragon droppings. Joffrey ran to alart his brothers of Aemond's actions.

III. The Vale

At the start of a war, Joffrey was barely three and ten and his dragon was too small for combat. Despite his eagerness to join in brothers, flying on dragonback to gain support for his mother's claim, he was sent to the Vale, as a ward to Lady Jeyne Arryn. He was against this idea, but agreed to go to the Eyrie only when convincent he will be protecting it with his dragon.

This did not sit well with Joffrey, who was determined to prove himself in battle. Only when told that he was being sent to defend the Vale against King Aegon’s dragons did his brother grudgingly consent to go.

IV. Prince of Dragonstone

After Rhaenyra took over King's Landing, she felt secure enough to call her youngest son by Laenor Velaryon to join her. By then, both Jacaerys and Lucerys were dead and Joffrey was the heir to the Iron Throne. A fleet set out from Gulltown with Joffrey and Tyraxes to escort them to the capital.

During Rhaenyra’s defense of King’s Landing, Joffrey is repeatedly forbidden from riding into battle, pleading with his mother.

I want to fight for you, Mother, as my brothers did. Let me prove that I am as brave as they were.

When Joffrey wished to ride forth with their own knights and those from White Harbor, to reach the dragons which were going to be faced with the raging mob, the queen refused.

Mother, what if they kill Tyraxes?

He feared for his dragon's life, but the queen didn't believe dragons could be killed by a common rabble. Prince sulked off at her choice and without notice, mounted Syrax. In hurry, he had vaulted onto his mother's dragon without a saddle or whip.

Syrax wished not to command the unfamiliar rider and twisted beneath him. Joffrey unable to maintain his grip on her, fell into his death.

V. Slaughter in the Dragonpit

In the meanwhile, Tyraxes retreated into his lair as an angry mob rushed at him. Initially, Prince Joffrey's dragon managed to defend himself until people attacked him from the back, Tyraxes turned to face them, his steel chains tangled, limiting his movement.

Prince Joffrey’s Tyraxes retreated back into his lair, roasting so many would-be dragonslayers… but his chains fouled… Half a dozen men (and one woman) would later claim to have dealt the dragon the mortal blow.

After his death, his wings were cut and thorn off into strips to make dragonskin cloaks.

A Strong and Upstanding Heart! A Lance Analysis

Imagine you're a kid in the 90s playing Pokemon Red and Blue…you’ve gotten all eight badges, made it through Victory Road and bested Lorelei, Bruno and Agatha. Now the only person that you think stands before you and the title of Indigo League Champion is a certain cape loving Dragon Master…

That’s right we’re talking about Lance! Lance is definitely one of those character who has very different interpretations depending on whether or not you’re looking at the anime, games or manga. For the sake of consistency with my other analyses…I’m only sticking to the gameverse and any media that corresponds to it (mainline games, Pokemon Masters EX and Generations). 

Let’s start with his name…in English it’s a weapon. Which is very befitting a dragon master as in many pieces of European Folklore knights wielded lances to slay dragons. But considering in Pokemon Lance doesn’t slay dragon-types but befriends them you could compare him to many of the heroes of dragon-rider fantasy who often had weapons they carried while on the back of their flying reptilians. Lance in the games is very knightly in demeanor and one could very easily imagine him riding on the back of his Dragonite wielding a lance. In French his name is Peter which is actually derived from petard which is another medieval weapon again reinforcing that knightly demeanor. His German name is Siegfried who is a legendary hero who bested the dragon Fafnir, further symbolizing Lance as a proud warrior. 

But then his Japanese is Wataru which has a couple of different meanings. First is “Watatsumi” who is a legendary kami and water deity in Japanese folklore that happened to be a dragon. But also it is derived from “wata” which means “cotton” which his Korean name also is derived from. When we think of the language of flowers we usually think of Roses and Forget-me-Nots. Yet cotton has a lot of symbolism. Cotton is known to mean “fortune, gratitude, cherish, well-being and receiving blessings”. When we think of Lance, he’s had a lot of blessings in his life. He was born into a prestigious dragon clan and was chosen as the heir of said clan before he went to the league. He became an Elite Four member which is an esteemed position many trainers could only dream to have. He even manages to become champion afterwards which as a title bestowed upon very few. So much of his life is very much blessed and Lance recognizes that blessing and cherishes it. 

Now let’s take a look at his team. His team varies throughout the series due to his changing roles from Elite Four to Champion so we’ll be covering both

Starting with his Elite Four team, the first thing that often stands out is that he lacks a lot of diversity on his team with him having 3 Pokemon from the same family and two of them being unevolved. While some people may consider it poor team building (at least from a more competitive mindset) it actually means a lot storywise. We have to remember that Pokemon was originally meant to end at GSC and we know by then Lance has ascended to the rank of champion. So him having two Dragonair actually makes sense in that context as it was foreshadowing his growth in his strength as a trainer. Now let’s take a look at his movesets. One thing that sticks out is that he really loves the move Hyper Beam, Outrage and SafeGuard. Hyper Beam is a very powerful move with the drawback of causing the Pokemon to not be able to move after for one turn after its use. It definitely establishes Lance as a power player with a hint of recklessness since the use of Hyper Beam does leave his Pokemon so vulnerable. However it also shows the trust he has in his Pokemon’s power to have that move consistently in the movesets. Outrage is another high-risk, high reward move that allows him to utilize STAB as it’s a dragon type. Again this further solidifies Lances hyper offensive strategy and his trust in his Pokemon. However this is where the move Safeguard comes into play as the move actually protects against the self-inflicted confusion status. This shows that Lance is strategic with his hyper-offensive strategy

Now let’s look at his team as champion! We can see he now has three full Dragonite which again shows that him having Dragonair in the Kanto games was an intentional choice to foreshadow his eventual ascent up the ranks. And now we also see that all of his Pokemon share the flying type which leads to the joke that Lance should be known as the “flying type champion”. His movesets for his Pokemon have also drastically changed. He has way more variety in types which helps to enable better coverage. He still relies on high-risk, high-reward moves but with more focus on moves that have lower accuracy (Thunder, Blizzard, Fire Blast, Dragon Rush). This change in strategy reflects his growth in the time between the original Kanto events and the Johto events. He’s had to step up to the role of Indigo League champion which warrants a change in tactics. That being said, he still definitely relies on his old faithfuls Outrage, Safeguard and Hyper Beam on his signature Dragon type.

His rematch team in HGSS shows more Dragon types and a shift in strategy to involve more set up (Dragon Dance, Swords Dance and Double Team) as well as some more evasive techniques (Roar to get rid of bad matchups)

I also wanted to bring up his team when pairs up with his cousin Clair. His signature Dragonite in these match-ups knows the move Dragon Meteor- a powerful move that can only be learned by Dragon types that have a high enough trust in their trainer. This shows that he has a strong bond with his dragon types which is something Clair at the time hasn’t quite yet gotten to.

"Ah! I've heard about you, <player>! I lead the Elite Four. You can call me Lance the dragon Trainer. You know that dragons are mythical Pokémon. They're hard to catch and raise, but their powers are superior. They're virtually indestructible. There's no being clever with them. Well, are you ready to lose? Your League challenge ends with me, <player>!"

I really like this introduction quote from Lance as he does a good job selling the power of Dragon type Pokemon to the player. Not only that you can see how much pride he has in being the leader of the Elite Four.

"I still can't believe my dragons lost to you, <player>. You are now the Pokémon League Champion! …Or, you would have been, but you have one more challenge left. There is one more Trainer to face! His name is… <rival>! He beat the Elite Four before you. He is the real Pokémon League Champion."This quote here gives us a look into the mindsight of Lance in Gen 1 where he’s a little overconfident in the powers of his team. Which makes sense because as we know up until Blue and Red no one had managed to make it to the league at all meaning that he’s held the title of the strongest for a long time. So him getting beat by not one, but two 11 year old kids in succession was definitely a shock to the system.

"That red Gyarados wasn't acting right. As I feared, somebody must have forced it to evolve… Did you come here because of the wild tales? You're <player>? I'm Lance, a Trainer like you. I heard some rumblings, so I came to investigate… I saw the way you battled earlier, <player>. I can tell that you're a Trainer with considerable skill. If you don't mind, could you help me investigate?" This is our first conversation with Lance in the Johto and you can actually see a change in his demeanor. He’s not boasting about the superior powers of dragon types or his own skill as a trainer. He’s actually more humble with his approach saying he is a trainer “like you”. Also right now he’s focused on trying to solve the mystery of the Red Gyarados, showing that he is taking the mantle of being the champion of the Indigo League very seriously

"Dragonite, Hyper Beam."I just had to put in his iconic phrase in this analysis. We know what’s coming here- he’s about to blast a poor Team Rocket grunt to kingdom come and give him PTSD (as we know from Pokemon Masters as the grunt he hyper beamed is currently on Pasio). We see here how he has no tolerance for evil-doers

"Sorry, <player>. I saw how well you were doing, so I just hung back. Now all there is left to do is to turn off that odd radio signal."A lot of complaints about champions prior to gen 8 were that they let the protagonist take down the bad guys with little to no assistance. But here we get some reasoning from Lance as to why he took a backseat. He noticed that the player could handle the grunts by themself so there was no need for him to step in. 

"It's this machine that's causing all the problems. I don't see a switch on it… We have no choice. We have to make all the Electrode faint. That should stop this machine from transmitting that strange signal. It's no fault of the Electrode, so it makes me feel sad. <Player>, let's split the job.I really like this quote because it complements the “Dragonite, Hyper Beam” quote. Even though he is no-holds barred when it comes to evil, he recognizes that the Electrode are innocent and don’t deserve to suffer even though they have to be fainted in order to help save the Pokemon affected by Radio transmission.

"I've been waiting for you. <Player>! I knew that you, with your skills, would eventually reach me here. There's no need for words now. We will battle to determine who is the stronger of the two of us. As the most powerful Trainer and as the Pokémon League Champion… I, Lance the dragon master, accept your challenge!"Lance’s pre-battle quote before the champion battle is a nice progression from his pre-battle quote when he was an Elite four member. Again he comes to this battle with a more measured, less haughty response than three years prior (although he does kind of borrow Blue’s “I’m the most Powerful Trainer” bit). You can tell how much he’s grown not just in strength, but in attitude.

"…It's over. But it's an odd feeling. I'm not angry that I lost. In fact, I feel happy. Happy that I witnessed the rise of a great new Champion!"

Again we can see more of this growth from the defeat quote as champion versus when he was the leader of the Elite Four. Here we see he’s not in disbelief, nor is he upset that yet another kid bested him. In fact he’s happy to have seen the growth of another champion. 

"I'm glad to be on your team, Silver!"Alright now onto some Pokemon Masters EX quotes. I chose this one of the team ups because I like how we see throughout the game, we see how much Lance looks out for Silver and is proud of him. A far cry from when they first interacted in the Johto games where Lance had to give him some tough love by completely annihilating his team. It all comes full circle for Silver during the Johto Neo Champion arc where he’s finally able to win against Lance, and Lance couldn’t be prouder of him. 

"You all haven't changed one bit, I see! I must admit, I'm looking forward to these battles myself!"I really like this line from the Normal Champion Stadium where the original Indigo Elite Four and Blue team up. It’s nice to see how he interacts with some of his former colleagues 

"(I guess he's right. I was very happy to witness my challengers surpass me.) But maybe that means I'm starting to forget what it feels like to WANT to win.) [...] I still remember how frustrating it was to lose to Red and Blue back in Kanto. Both Dragonite and I need to approach this like challengers, not Champions..."I really like this quote from the Arc-Suit chapter as we see Lance coming towards an important realization. He’s been so focused on being an ideal champion, a trainer who can be a role model to others and mentor as well, that he’s forgotten what made him want to aim for the title of champion in the first place. His drive to win. His joy for the taste of victory. He thinks about his losses to Red and Blue and how he was frustrated he was bested by kids. And now he’s realizing that if he wants to continue to grow stronger, he has to approach battles like he’s not at the pinnacle of what it means to be a trainer.

"It's true that you're strong, Clair. And it's good to have confidence in your own abilities...but there's a limit to what's good and what's not. Too much pride can make you overconfident, and overconfidence can make you vulnerable." 

"You can be a little impulsive sometimes, Clair...but that earnest, straightforward attitude of yours is one of your greatest strengths as well. If you can learn to hone that, the sky is the limit!"I really like the relationship Lance has with his cousin Clair. Even though their personalities clash a bit, we see how much he does care for her even when he is chastising her. He wants her to be the best version of herself that she can

"A long time ago, when I was a member of the Elite Four but not Champion, I was defeated by a Trainer.He claimed to be the greatest of all, and he had the strength and skill to back it up. But eventually, a stronger Trainer came along, and even he was defeated... It was then that I realized something. That title—"the greatest"—can inflate your ego, but it doesn't really mean anything. It's an illusion, there one minute and gone the next...The way I see it, seeking to grow and improve yourself is far more worthwhile than chasing a fleeting illusion of greatness."

This quote here shows the moment where we can see the shift between his Gen 1 and Gen 2 personalities. It was the quick succession between Blue and Red as champion that allowed him to temper himself when it comes to chasing success. Sure he still values the title of champion, but he realizes that just because he obtained it that he can’t rest on his laurels, lest someone else come by and snatch the title away from him

"Leon, I think that capes should be more simple! When you're the Champion and greet new challengers with a swoosh of your cape...I understand that the details of your cape speak volumes about who you are. But for me, the simplicity of my cape helps me stand out more!" The dialogue about capes between Lance, Steven and Leon was a cute little interaction between the three champions regarding capes. We see Lance prefers simple capes compared to Leon’s whose cape is filled with advertisements. We know Lance has a huge fondness for capes even back from the Fame Checker where a woman from the Celadon Department Store mentions he comes by to purchase capes frequently. Even though he disagrees about designs for capes with Leon, we know from further into the conversation that he still greatly respects the symbolism Leon’s cape has showing him to be an open-minded and respectful individual

"I noticed you weren't your usual self right before our match.It was almost as if you were so worked up, you couldn't tell what was happening with your partner. Iris, you must remember that you're no ordinary Pokémon Trainer. You are a role model to others, and you represent Unova as Champion. I hope you can understand that and conduct yourself accordingly."

Ah so this is dialogue from the Iris event that definitely rubbed some people the wrong way. We know from earlier in the event that Iris was struggling with knowing that people seemed to find her an embarrassment as the champion from Unova. And then her Hydreigon goes out of control. We see here Lance actually could tell that something was up, but didn’t know the full context. His words do come off a bit harsh here to someone who knows everything going on with Iris, but you can see that he was trying to help her out. He understands the weight that comes with being champion, and also the weight of being a dragon tamer. 

"It's never too late. You can start with whoever needs you most."I really liked this line from Lance to Diantha once Iris is able to regain confidence in herself. Diantha was lamenting the fact that she didn’t think about mentorship as a champion (as she was kind of removed from the Team Flare plot in the gameverse canon). And we have Lance who's not admonishing her for that but showing there’s room to grow.

"Someday, stories about me will be passed down to future generations of our clan as well. If I think about it that way, it reminds me that I have to be on my best behavior.I'd like to be a good role model for all future dragon masters."This quote from Lance really helps to shine light on why he is so passionate about being a good role model and having a strong and upstanding nature. He realizes that he will forever be immortalized in his clan’s history and in the Hall of Fame. He wants to make sure the legacy he leaves behind is one that makes people feel energized and not ashamed

"This outfit shows off Gyarados's power as a dragon! What's that, you say? Gyarados isn't a Dragon-type Pokémon? Haha, not all dragons are Dragon-type Pokémon!" I remember this quote making rounds on social media as we get to have some in-universe acknowledgement that dragons =/= dragon types! It’s a distinction that you would expect a dragon master like Lance to know!

Lance is an iconic character and he’s a really good case study on how Gamefreak has always cared about their characters even as far back as gen 1. A lot of people deride the first region as being barebones but he’s one of the many characters regions that has had layers woven into him from the beginning as we can see his growth between the events of Kanto and Johto. He grows from the proud (and just a tad cocky) leader of the Elite four to a wise noble Champion and Dragon Master

I know this is beating a dead horse at this point, but I just started thinking about this the other day and...

How many people that were previously enemies has Sonic ACTUALLY befriended?

Like my knowledge of some old games and the handhelds ain't great, but...

There was Knuckles, who I think is the only one in the classic era.

He never really befriended Gamma in SA1, just left him to Amy.

Also he didn't befriend Chaos, just beat the anger out of him.

The next one was Shadow in SA2, although they're still kinda rivals?

I don't think Rouge counts in SA2 since she wasn't really an enemy of Sonic specifically, even in Heroes it's really Sonic and Shadow that start the fight.

Gemerl is a robot who was reprogrammed to be friendly, I wouldn't count that as "befriending someone".

Him and Jet are rivals in every Riders game, this never changes.

Blaze in Rush is someone that fought him and they became friends, so it's clear cut, she counts.

Silver in '06 does as well.

Do we count Shade from Chronicles? I think she had a boss fight. I know very little about that game but it's not canon, right?

Merlina is kinda a grey area? Like they were friends, he stopped her evil plans and was still nice to her. I don't know if in context that meets the criteria.

On top of that I don't think the Knights of the Round Table count. Sonic is there to take the swords and they work together at the end. I don't think there's any hard feelings, but don't know if this counts as "friends".

Sage could be the next example, but she's still loyal to Eggman. I don't think what they briefly shared was friendship as much as Sage wanting to save Eggman.

I haven't played Superstars but Trip doesn't even have a bossfight, does she? I don't think she counts.

Not looking at the method, just purely if they became friends down the line. Out of all of those, there's 4 total (if you count Shadow, which I do) with 1 it's complicated and 1 non-canon. That's very few when you consider how large the game cast is.

An overwhelming majority of his friends weren't ever hostile with him to begin with, like the Chaotix, Amy, Tails, Cream, Emerl, Big, ect. There's plenty of other cast members that are still have him on their shit list, like Eggman, Infinite (if he's alive), Fang, Metal, Eggman Nega, the Deadly Six...

Now I'm starting to wonder where this idea of it being a frequent even came from.

Best shot of his seals I could get from last night's Collision. After some transcription and a little bit of research, I've been able to track down the text the two on his sleeve are quoting! The full texts of the two notes shown here, from left to right, are:

"Honor is more than glory / Honor is loyalty / Honor is control over our baser instincts, mastering rage / Honor is not bowing to the whims of fearful weaklings," which is a modification of a longer quote from the novella Blood and Fire, and;

"It is we who stand guard / Our eternal watch shall not fail / For we are the Death Riders," which is a slight modification of a line from the Grey Knights' Canticle of Absolution (essentially just subbing in "the Death Riders" for "the Ordo Malleus"). Some more notes below the cut.

Interestingly this is at least the second quote on his jacket to come from the Grey Knights, as tumblr user homoeroticgrappling previously identified a variation of the Grey Knights' battle prayer on the front. They join the Black Templars and the Iron Warriors as specific chapters of space marines that get a shout out in Claudio's purity seals! It's very rewarding to be able to place these in context, since I like to use them to inform my reading of Claudio's character.

I've really only read the wiki entry for the Grey Knights so far, but it's certainly illuminating that these are the guys Claudio is modelling his loyalty to Mox after, as they represent incorruptible loyalty and the dissolution of self in service of a higher purpose; ymmv on whether or not Claudio is living up to that ideal, but if that's what he's striving for it adds a really interesting layer to his dynamic within the Death Riders!

I also wanted so badly to transcribe some of the notes on his back that we got a glimpse of this week, but regretfully I just couldn't find a clear enough shot. The small one on the back of his shoulder (which is visible but not legible in this picture) for sure ends with "For the one true King," though, which given his pattern of substitutions is most likely a quote ending with something akin to "For the Emperor." Unfortunately I can't make out the text on the rest of the note in any of the screenshots I took, but if anyone with more Warhammer knowledge is aware of a roughly three-line quote that might fit the bill, hit me up!

Hi everyone,

today I just need to vent for a moment and share a personal thought: I find the hate directed at Immortal in Invincible really forced.

Are we seriously judging a character just because he loses fights? Seriously? It seems to me someone needs to call this out: there’s a big difference between laughing at a meme and turning it into constant mockery—even toward those who see themselves in this character or consider him a “comfort character.”

Immortal is no random guy. He’s a man who’s lived for over 3,000 years. He’s been a king, a warrior, a knight, a guide… and if I’m not mistaken, in the Invincible storyline he even took on the role of Abraham Lincoln. He fought for humanity long before the idea of “superhero” even existed.

I admit the memes about him can be funny—I laugh at them too—but it bothers me when they turn into calling him “useless” or a “loser,” or when people bully anyone who actually appreciates him, or treat him like a total failure.

If we want to critique certain sides of his personality—his stubbornness, for example—that’s fine. But let’s also try to put ourselves in his shoes:

Imagine living 3,000 years as the most powerful human on the planet… and then waking up one day to find you’re nothing but an ant compared to beings like the Viltrumites.

Imagine your team—your family—brutally slaughtered by someone you trusted. Imagine finding yourself alone, full of rage, guilt, and helplessness.

Immortal doesn’t fight out of ego. He fights because he can’t do otherwise. Because he’s traumatized, broken, and driven by that sense of duty that’s always defined him. He never had a moment to stop and process the pain.

And that’s where the only truly valid critique comes in: Immortal never faces his trauma. He doesn’t seek help, he doesn’t pause… until it’s too late. But then he changes.

He realizes he needs to let go, he deserves a normal life. He retires, he builds a family. And that’s not a defeat. It’s maturity. It’s awareness. It’s inner strength.

In conclusion: yes, let’s laugh at the memes—I’m right there with you. But let’s remember Immortal isn’t just “that guy who always loses.”

It’s not his fault that ultra-powerful beings like the Viltrumites exist. And it’s unfair to reduce a character with so much depth to a mere punching bag.

A bit of context, a bit of empathy… and maybe a bit of respect. Even for those who fall. But keep getting back up.

I meme su di lui li trovo anche divertenti, lo ammetto, ma mi dà fastidio quando da lì si passa a chiamarlo “inutile” o “sfigato”, quando si fa bullismo su chi lo apprezza, o quando lo si tratta come un fallimento totale.

Se vogliamo criticarlo per certi aspetti della sua personalità – la testardaggine, per esempio – va benissimo. Ma proviamo anche a metterci nei suoi panni:

Immaginate di vivere 3000 anni come l’essere umano più potente del pianeta… e poi scoprire, da un giorno all’altro, che sei solo una formica rispetto a esseri come i Viltrumiti.

Immaginate di vedere il tuo team, la tua famiglia, massacrata brutalmente da qualcuno in cui credevi. Immaginate di ritrovarvi soli, pieni di rabbia, senso di colpa, e impotenza.

Immortal non combatte per ego. Combatte perché non può fare altrimenti. Perché è traumatizzato, distrutto, e pieno di quel senso del dovere che lo ha sempre guidato. Non ha mai potuto prendersi una pausa, né elaborare il dolore.

Ed è proprio lì che arriva una critica sensata: Immortal non affronta mai il suo trauma. Non cerca aiuto, non si ferma… finché è troppo tardi. Ma poi cambia.

Capisce di dover mollare, di meritarsi finalmente una vita normale. Va in pensione, si costruisce una famiglia. E questa non è una sconfitta. È maturità. È consapevolezza. È forza interiore.

In conclusione: sì, ridiamo con i meme, anch’io lo faccio. Ma ricordiamoci che Immortal non è solo “quello che perde sempre”.

Non è colpa sua se esistono esseri ultra-potenti come i Viltrumiti. E non è giusto trasformare un personaggio con così tanto spessore in un semplice bersaglio da deridere.

Bisogna avere un po’ di contesto, un po’ di empatia… e magari un po’ di rispetto. Anche per chi cade. Ma continua a rialzarsi.

Short Drabble of Dominik’s sister! Reader and knight Nikolai because i enjoy hurting myself

READ DRAGON RIDER! READER FOR SOME CONTEXT IF NECESSARY

It was almost three years after Dominik’s death when you returned to Ravka with your husband and friend Sir Nikolai at your side.

The moment you stepped into the royal palace Marián approached. Marián, who was Dominik’s widow. She was teary eyed as she wrapped her arms around you, the both of you breathing each other in as you stayed silent, the wordless exchange enough to crack your heart.

“Y/N!” Domik had shouted the moment the first bolt when through his dragon’s neck, the second soon to follow. “Tell Marián I—”

Whatever he��d meant to say was cut off by the second bolt through his chest, your screams drowning out the roars of pain of the dragon crashing into the sea.

“Here.” She sniffs, wiping her hand across her eyes before turning, gesturing to a small, wide eyed toddler hiding behind her dress.

You stare.

Stare.

The child—a boy—lurches towards you so quickly you’d be knocked over if you didn’t grab him. But then you’re sinking to the ground, tugging the toddler into your hold as you tremble, rubbing the child’s back as you force your wobbling mouth not to let out a strangled cry.

His hair. His eyes.

Dominik’s.

“Marián,” you croak, nose touching the boy’s head as he giggles, fingers tightening around the back of your dress. “dear gods.”

“This is your aunt, sweetheart.” The women says, crouching beside the both of you as the toddler pulls away, his brown eyes gleaming with unrepressed joy.

“You look like my dad.” The boy tells you through a grin and your heart cleaves in two.

“I know.” You force a wobbly smile when he takes your hand, the small fingers wrapping excitedly around your own. “So do you.”

“What is it?” Nikolai asks, shutting the door with a soft click behind him after you rushed into your old room, a hand on your chest. You can practically feel your pulse trying to escape you as you attempt to process the recent introduction. “Y/N. Please, what—”

“He looks just like him.” You croak, voice completely strained since your throat is so tight. You shudder again when you remember those tiny brown eyes and slowly turn to Nikolai. “Just like him.”

have a preview for The Black Horse and the Gold

Heavenerys and Amos Bolton belong to @call-sign-shark with some tweaks from me so they fit during the time period the adventures of Dunk and Egg(A Knight for the Seven Kingdoms novella/new show) takes place.

for context its been over a century since the last dragon died, the Dance of Dragons happened and removed women from the line of succession. will try to provide some more context as the show has yet to come out.

i base my au more on the books than the show because i didn't like eitehr adaptation except for providing faces for the characters.

His sigil is a black horsehead.

Not the gold his elder brother uses nor the gray his aunt uses as Lady Gray, but black, the original sigil of their house.

Thomas Ryswell is not the first to press his suit, but he is the only one who has not participated in the tourney to gain her attention.

He is a good rider, Heavenerys had confirmed the rumors of House Ryswell having the best horses and riders beyond the Neck. Heavenerys Targaryen had also been having an affair with his brother and would wed him the moment her half-year mourning period was done. It would look bad on her father, Aerys, if she didn’t put on her widow’s weeds for the ghastly Amos Bolton.

After all, she was the only daughter of the new King and was the only hopes for his crown not to pass to his mad brother, Rhaegel. Things were expected of Hev, should she have a son, he may rule as his grandsire’s heir since the Dance of the Dragons forever barred women from inheriting the Iron Throne.

Things were not expected from Aeva, well, not beyond keeping some semblance of decorum even if everyone knows how loose her morals are. She was free as the wind and no net would ensnare her for as long as she lived.

They come by each other while riding in the Kingswood, she in her shimmering golden mare and he in his black as coal stallion. No words are exchanged and yet he understands she is suggesting a race between them.

Hev had said he was the best rider in the north, no one could outrace him and as they push their horses to their limits, Aeva considers her cousin may not have been exaggerating because he’s her lover’s brother.

The Princess’ riding veil has fallen off somewhere and her dark mane flows freely behind her. She laughs and purposely loses to him as they race to the stream they intended to take their horses to.

“Well met, Ser.” The princess addresses the northman whose sorrows cannot leave his eyes no matter what he does. He may not speak to her unless she does first, she was princess and he merely a second son of a vassal house after all.

Amos hated it when Aeva would pull rank on him. The fool believed that because he managed to get his grubby hands on the new king’s only daughter, he had any right to believe himself the family’s equal. Amos was still a vassal lord to Lord Stark; Aeva was a daughter of House Martell and House Targaryen through her grandmother Daenerys, sister of the late King Daeron II and wife of Prince Maron Martell.

Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken. Aeva would be damned if she didn’t live by her house’s words.

“I am no knight, your highness.” He corrects looking as wild as she does. A less honorable man would’ve demanded his reward already and yet Thomas Ryswell does not push it.

“All men are knights where a woman is concerned, Lord Ryswell.” Aeva manages to make him smile as she quotes part of Florian the Fool as she comes close enough to see his damnably blue eyes up close. You can see the core of a person through them, discern between friend from foe and lie from truth. “You ride better than most, none have been able to keep up with Erinys like your steed has done.”

“You threw the race, your highness, I would have preferred a fair game.” The dark-haired young man points out and yet stays just a breath away from her.

Erinys is a name given to Demeter after Poseidon raped her while both had horse forms, means raging. Would've gone with Nymeria but i think for a Dornish promcess that might be insulting her ancestress.

I just discovered this IF out of context through your chapter update post and just jumped in blindly cuz I saw fencing and went "!!!! fencing !!!!" (Even tho I ended up going the polo route for the first playthru cuz POLO!!!!!!!! I havent heard/seen polo mentioned in over a decade this was like an oasis for me (side side note; love that u included Midsummer holding his breath to loosen the girth. When I read he was an "antics" horse i figured thats something he'd do lol. Vindication. Its such an often overlooked detail)) and going into this blind was wild BUT HOLY COW THIS IS SO COOL? You weaved together the seemingly dispirate parts of the premise together so well! I love how much of a nerd MC can be! The wikipedia links are such a clever touch! And as a game dev student OH MY GODS THE VARIABLES. THERE'S SO MUCH FLAVOUR TEXT. IM IN AWE OF UR PATIENCE AND ABILITY TO WRANGLE THOSE! The writing is great as well, I love all the details you weave in and I love what sus bastards (affectionate) both Adrian and Merlin are and the breadth and depth of research that has gone into this is insane. Thanks for the compliments! Yeah, all the various flavor text variations depending upon the MC's personality and their previous decisions is how the game ended up with a 60k route out of 600k text. The behemoth that eats people's brains.

And it's great to see that someone actually picked up on what was going on with Midsummer Knight's Dream (and also Knight Rider) when it came to their saddling. F in the chat for all the MCs who didn't realize and fell off their horse when the saddle slipped.

Do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? Smart characters. Because I'm not smart. Also characters who are canonly very verbose and have very flowery language, I don't have the vocabulary to make it seem natural.

Do you have any scenario in mind for your muse(s) that gets you thinking “man I hope I get to write this one day”? Lambert in his full kingly glory (softsmile), Sylvain showcasing his true, raw self to someone.

Favorite TOA-related memories? Byleth losing HP while fighting a fish with Arden's Frederick in order to impress fishermen, breaking his hand on a table, and then getting kicked in the nuts. All in the same event.

is there a reason that you portray ludwig as a cainhurst man? does something point towards it in canon? i love the concept but am beyond curious

I think if you string a few things together via lore you can make the argument, without being able to prove or disprove it either way. 

(I’m not the first to point out any of this btw, all credit to precedent lore-hunting) -

Cainhurst has several visual references to horses, including the castle’s mounted knight statues not found anywhere else; the spurs on the boots of the male Cainhurst noble's garb; the reiterspallach’s literal meaning of rider’s broadsword; the NPCs called, in English, Indentured Chevaliers. In French, the noble’s getup is translated as Chevalier - which can mean simply knight (as in the military rank) but does also literally mean mounted combatant. This is why, in my writing, Ludwig has the formal title of Chevalier - because of his ancestry.  

Outside of the Cainhurst context, there are almost no references to horses or mounted fighting within Yharnam itself. Take all of that and apply it to the fact that Ludwig looks a lot like he was riding a horse when he succumbed to the scourge, and you’ve got a connection, if a little tenuous - but so is most speculation in Bloodborne. If I were to argue this as an art historian, I’d slap a footnote on this with some caveats but I’d still put it forward.  

For my own narrative purposes - I’m going to assume you’ve read my work and that’s why you’re asking - it makes for a fairly compelling “outsider” perspective to the intricacies of Yharnam, and a different lived experience/history when I’m writing from his POV. The overt xenophobia of Yharnamites and the tension with Cainhurst are rich textural and plot elements for storytelling - there’s more than one way to lose your humanity, and being a foreigner in a hostile environment is one. It also creates opposition and variation alongside both Gehrman and especially Laurence: Ludwig, a member of the landed gentry who has never wanted for anything in his life but still feels duty-bound to be of service; in contrast to Laurence, who grasps at every advantage he can get and still acts like the world owes him.

My Retro-Cartoon Ramblings, Part 6

We've hit a lot in the past 5 sections here. Its important to understand that TV at the time was, in general, more ridiculous. The only reason MASK was on Saturday morning in animation and Knight Rider was on in the evenings was a matter of budget. They sold us toys of both.

If they could have afforded to give KITT flip out wings and laser blasters on the FX budget from day one, you know they would have. They eventually did make the car fly, and it was boss.

(Can't show the good version of the opening song because its not on YT anymore, so here's the song, and a rare promo to show just a sample of the madness)

For complicated reasons I didn't get to watch a lot of cartoons on Saturday, and so a lot of what I watched came on Sunday, much of it thanks to Nickelodeon. This was one of my favorite shows. No one else I knew watched it. No one knew it existed.

(most of the English stuff is vanished from online, but here's a touch of the french version).

I would try and tell people about it, and they would ask if I dreamed it up. Because, it's about these two children who get lost in a cave and wind up in an underground kingdom, where they're found by the secret kingdom of legless undergrounders, whose star is slowly dying.

The children of this lost civilization, with the help of two ancient pangolins that may be robots or may be cyborgs create a legged goddess figure who, with Spartakus, who might be that Sparatkus but probably isn't, must save the inner sun from dying or all earth dies.

Throughout this, they are hunted by Radio Pirates who seem to be a Frenchman's stereotype of British hoodlums. Plus points: Body positivity, kickin' tunes. Bad points: they're slavers! (boo!)

If you feel like you've just been recruited into a cult, it isn't unjustified (and I should know), because while none of my peers or parents believed I'd actually seen this damn show, it presents its belief in the world of the sun beneath the sea with almost reverent sincerity.

The whole thing is a surreal dream-logic journey through a multi-layered inner earth, visiting historical figures and weird hypothetical alien landscapes. In one particularly harrowing episode, they visit what is implied to be the New York of the far future...

Inhabited by nothing but a lone, kaiju-like creature that thinks one of the party is a doll or pet, one that is implied be a future human mutated beyond recognition. The episode opens with slow, silent pans over the city with low wind.

I adore the show from my memories and few scattered episodes I've been able to find. I actually ordered a figure of MassMedia from France, but it came with what appeared to have been an intentionally broken arm. I was super-bummed.

The one in the pic isn't mine. Its in a box someplace waiting for me to get the gumption to try and fix it. I mean, in what other context does that character design get an action figure? She got multiple! Turns out the original Les Mondes Engloutis was HUGE in France.

It would make a beautiful open world RPG, provided it could be kept as bafflingly strange as the source material.

Also there's an episode where one of the kids escapes the pirates by unionizing the crew!
