Squid — Cowards (Warp)
Squid started out as a post-punk band, an outfit exploring the combination of taut, rhythmic guitar play and dissatisfied screeds. But now, three albums in, the band’s sound has turned looser and more expansive, touching not just hyper-verbal punk, but jazz, improvisation and krauty cosmic drive. Cowards is both tightly constructed and superbly laissez-faire. Its intricate rhythms and knotty lines dissolve completely once or twice per track into limpid intervals of contemplation.
Consider “Crispy Skin,” the single, jittering on through twittering bird flock electronics and carnival keyboards, the celebratory vibe undercut, somewhat, by lyrics dealing with cannibalism. “Am I the bad one?” singer Ollie Judge inquires, as he contemplates “pages and pages of…crispy skin.” A euphoric rush of trebly sounds blows by, undergirded by elastic, agile bass, and skittery, complicated drums. And then the cut draws to a near halt, Judge alone as he considers free will and original sin, a capella, in the lull between dance beats.
The two “Field Works” pieces are even more subdued. “I” unfolds against a flourish of harpsichord-eddies, with Judge murmuring softly about being a “god-fearing man,” getting ragged only towards the end. “II” follows a tick-tocking clock cadence, the melody slithery and indefinite against this regular foundation. For a band that regularly shocked its listeners to attention with yelps and gulps and frenzies, these two cuts remain remarkably tranquil.
These songs insinuate rather than shout at you, sidling up to their revelations in a dreaming, disconnected way. “Blood on the Boulders” could hardly be more ominous, with its rolls of piano and its slow, tom-tom pulse, but it scares you first with paralysis, like a dream where danger is coming but you can’t move. When it picks up mid-cut, in an insect-swarm buzz of guitar songs, a hammering rhythm and indignant squawks of reed, it’s almost a relief, that the thing that was looming is finally here.
If you liked the herky-jerky hyper-literacy of Bright Green Field, it might take a bit to acclimate to the slow build in play here. The songs won’t grab you or pull your hair. They’re barely touching you. They won’t even acknowledge that you’re there. And yet, they can sink deep into your cortex over time, haunting you like the nightmares you can’t remember and the words you wanted to write down but that fade completely as you open your eyes.

it's definitely a sign of privilege but no man has physically intimidated me ever, any more than i've felt physically intimidated by anybody (man or woman). and believe me, i've been in situations. it's all been loci of patriarchal institutional control that scare me. i don't care about losing a tooth. i mean i do, because it would suck, but teeth can be replaced and my cringe fail krauty genetics did not furnish me with nice teeth from birth anyway. but losing a job? losing my savings? nightmare. nightmare. nightmare.

La Jungle (2015), II (2016), Past // Middle Age // Future (2019), Fall Off the Apex (2021), Ephemeral Feast (2022), Blurry Landscapes (2023), La Jungle
I saw La Jungle on a tiny island thousands of miles from anywhere, blasting out tunes on a rickety makeshift stage in a fishing village. In that setting, the Belgian duo packed so much into so little time, drummer and guitarist frantically throwing themselves into a panicked and skilful blast of ferociously intense noisy-krauty-dance-punk. Sometimes a band can only be seen live. La Jungle, while never unenjoyable on record, has never quite matched that live ecstasy. The duo offer competent post-Lightning Bolt noise rock with bits of dance and electronics, but lack their live set’s mobility and glorious impatience. Some tracks will give you a taste of what La Jungle are about (the better albums are Past // Middle Age // Future and Ephemeral Feast), but they’re so much better in the flesh.
Pick(s): ‘Ape in a Python’, ‘Hahehiho’, ‘The Invisible Child’, ‘Feu L’Homme’, ‘Hallow Love’, ‘La compagnie de la chanson’

Future Sounds Of Kraut Vol. 3 - Compiled by Fred und Luna It's not at all easy or basically impossible to describe the term “Kraut” stylistically. Nevertheless, Compost Records and Fred und Luna embark on a journey through time to discover the different elements of German electronic music from the 1970s and 1980s and their impact on the more recent German and global music scene. After the great success of Volumes 1 and 2, Vol. 3 follows on stylistically from its predecessor and - as this is one of the basic ideas of the series - gradually expands the musical spectrum with new krauty elements. Ever-Green Vietnamese by Andrea Nguyen
Although many people think of Vietnamese cooking as beefy pho and meat-filled sandwiches, traditional Vietnamese cooking has always involved a lot of plants and seafood and a little meat. In Ever-Green Vietnamese, Andrea Nguyen details how cooks in her home country draw on their natural resourcefulness and Buddhist traditions to showcase a wide array of herbs and vegetables in flavorful, comforting recipes.
Filled with the brilliant advice and exceptional teaching Nguyen is known for, the book offers recipes for flavor-boosting condiments and sauces (her incredible DIY vegan fish sauce), exciting ways to enjoy tofu, and dozens of vegetable-driven sides and mains, including a few that incorporate a bit of meat (many with vegetarian or vegan options). Home cooks will revel in Nguyen's ingenious recipes.
The Don't Panic Pantry Cookbook by Noah Galuten
As the world changes around us, we are constantly vacillating between two different versions of ourselves: the one who wants to be healthier and the one who wants to be excited, or comforted, by the food that we eat. We all want to eat "better," but what does that mean? This book is here to say: Don't panic.
Don't panic about learning how to cook; or environmental sustainability; or nutrition. Don't panic about what to make for breakfast or dinner or midnight snacks, because Noah Galuten has your back! In Noah's kitchen, trying really matters, perfection is overrated, and better is good enough. Noah gives you the tools to create kitchen staples and vegetable-and-bean-centric dishes (with just a little meat too) that will become the beloved, simple, everyday meals you will make over and over in your home.
Here are recipes for a "Chef Salad" with Cheddar Croutons and Probiotic Ranch; and three different versions of broccoli pasta (vegetarian, pescatarian or with rosemary-infused sausage) that you will put on weekly rotation. There are recipes for Noah's Instagram-famous Krauty Beans; a 30-second Vegan Tahini Dressing that will become your new favorite dip; a Miso Roast Chicken with Vegetables that you can prep in advance and leave in the fridge for several hours, or even a day, that makes dinner for your entire family using a single sheet pan. But there's also--for when you really need it--the fresh herbed panko-crusted Mozzarella Marinara that made Galuten's famously funny wife, comedian Iliza Shlesinger, break down in grateful tears. Here are your pantry staples for the future, to help you make cooking at home the tastier, more convenient, don't panic option.
The Green Barbecue by Rukmini Iyer

Dirty Tracks For Clubbing (2023) Prata (2024) Maquina
Lisbon trio Maquina, with their high-volume (and, on debut Dirty Tracks For Clubbing, long-form) blend of EBM and noisy industrial rock, don’t exactly offer much new (krauty-dance-noise-punk has been a thing for forty years or so), but it’s gloriously good fun. When done well, this is one of a few kinds of music that really unlocks something primal (ie sweaty, unhinged) in me – and Maquina certainly do that.
Pick(s): ‘..’, ‘subversive’

Phew. Kartais svarbu pasiskųsti, ir problemos išsisprendžia....
