So I wrote a BMC Fic inspired by "Monitoring" by Deco*27! Perhaps, give it a read if you're up for it?

2015 -> 2025

I can remember the day I got the first Kuroshitsuji volume very well. From the weather (warm and sunny) to what I was wearing (a blouse and jeans, for some reason in that weather) and what else I was doing in town that day (having lunch at a Japanese restaurant with my family, kicking a stranger), but I cannot recall the exact date. All I know is that it was a Saturday (my first Kurosaturday! XD) in either July or August during the summer holidays. It's not July or August right now, but I thought that today was as good as any as a pick for a little "10 years in the Kuro fandom" post :)

I do not know anymore when I first heard of Kuroshitsuji, but I do know that one of my friends watched the anime when we were about 13 (but she never told me what it was about, and I had no interest to ask), and that my sister made the horrible mistake to borrow Volumes 7 and 8 (!) from the library (she had the awful habit to get volumes of mangas and books randomly without having read any previous ones) while she was in primary school. (She has at least once given me grief that I got super into the series that scared her shitless at like 9.)

At any rate, I know that I barely knew anything about Kuro at all before I picked it up that sunny Saturday in 2015. My knowledge of the series was limited to "it's about a butler and his master, and the butler's name is Sebastian Michaelis" at that time, and the only reason I knew Sebastian's name was because of these exact KHR and Kuro crossover images that I found and downloaded in 2013:

For some reason, the VERY known fact that the series is set in Victorian England eluded me completely for years. (And, for the life of me, I cannot remember when and how I finally found out about this.) Otherwise, I might have picked up the series a few years beforehand - after all, I got interested in the manga because of its setting.

When I was 12 or 13, I read Kady Cross' The Girl in the Steel Corset. It was the very first book I have ever read that was set in the Victorian era, and I was over the moon. I guessed even then that the book was not accurate at all (it's Steampunk Victorian, and the characters wear their corsets over their clothes and ride something like motocycles), but I still fell in love with the setting. I read the entire series (though not the short stories), but I like the first the most and think it is the best. (The series has since gone out of print (and is now only available as e-books), and the libraries in my town got rid of the books. Earlier this year, I managed to find a pretty much new copy of the first book in German, the exact edition I read back then. <3 I still need to reread it though.)

Cloudia's special corset is based on Finley's steel one. I named a WotQ character after a Steampunk Chronicles characters too. And, funnily enough, the first book is quite similar to Kuro: The male protagonist Griffin is an orphaned teenager of the nobility whose family has worked for the British crown for generations. His love interest is an unusually strong blonde girl (Finley). One of his closest friends is a boy with superstrength gained from experiments (he also works for him). He has a widowed, childless funky aunt. His enemy is the person who killed his parents.

"The Victorian era" is not particularly weird to have as a little special interest, but it is weird enough that it's better not to get "too much" into it. It's also not an "educationally beneficial" interest to have as it's not on the curriculum in Germany. So I spent a few years holding great love and interest for the Victorian era in my heart without actually learning anything about it.

Cue Kuroshitsuji.

Sometimes, library books are left untouched for weeks and multiple prolongations before they are read. As far as I recall, this wasn't the case with Kuro. I read it quite soon after getting it, and I was so mad that I only got that first volume because it was so, so fun. I headed to the library at the next opportunity to get more volumes. I switched to reading the manga online before (or while I was in?) the Indian Butler Arc because going to the library and waiting for the right volumes to be available just took too long. I read the manga like a madwoman, I tell you. I read it on the family/work laptop in the living room in the morning, between my father leaving for work and my siblings waking up, because that laptop would be on already, whereas mine was not. My brother got a new phone that summer, and I got his old one as a hand-me-down, and I was so thrilled to have it because it was a touchscreen phone and I could actually go into the internet with it! The family laptop wasn't needed anymore; I could just read the manga on my little phone on kuroshitsuji.net when it still existed in that incarnation before getting up and going to bed instead. They put cocaine into cola in the 19th century, and Yana put cocaine into her 19th-century-set manga too.

I made a quick trip into town when a double period of biology got cancelled to buy the character guide. I quoted Edward's "the kind of person who mistakes the sin of murder for justice" in my first Advanced English exam (I got an A-/1-). When I went to London with my school in 11th grade, I got a Kuro wallet (at Camden Market :) ) and I'm still using it to this day. (I got a few compliments and happy shrieks over the years because of it <3) The second artbook was one of the first things (if not the first thing; I'm not quite sure) I bought with my tutoring money in 12th grade (unfortunately, someone ran into me right after I left the bookstore and damaged its spine a bit -.-). My phone background was the cover of Chapter 109 until Yana's beautiful BotA poster came out; that drawing has been my phone background ever since (and I'm on my third phone with it now). I was so pleased when I found out our graduation prom's date was July 13 (I didn't manage to finish "The Siblings, Partners" on time because of that). Etc. Coke in the manga, I tell you.

Before 2015, I had not interacted much with fandoms. I love KHR, but I never really had anything to do with its fandom (and I used to write KHR fanfics). In January 2015, after quite a while of always being on tumblr and looking up stuff here, I finally made an account (for the Psycho-Pass fandom, though its activity ebbed down the more time passed since Season 2's end). Considering its reputation, it's a bit horrifying that the Kuro fandom is the one I have interacted with the most and the longest - ever. I sponged up all the theory posts I could find here and read so much fanfic when I first got into Kuro. Chapter 108 (which is getting animated today; how exciting) was the first chapter I read "live," and it was such a fun time.

Over the years, I made friends in this fandom; I lost friends in this fandom. I encountered so many nice, lovely people, and ran into and got harrassed by multiple shitty ones. (One of them is a recurring one; my report mails have got less formal as the years passed because they always end up with the same staff member, and she knows.) I do think of myself as more of a "periphery" member of the fandom but in the last 10 years I...

... participated in a few events and hosted some myself too. (I've been meaning to do another but just cannot find the time ugh, or I remember it too late, and then there's no prep time left anymore.)

... modded a Kuro Discord server. (I don't do that anymore.)

... helped a little with a Kuro fancomic (though it didn't end up seeing the light of day, I think).

... took part in a zine (it was a lovely experience but also quite bad; I cried because of it ^^') and got rejected from another (that was so embarrassing because I somehow completely missed its theme, so my application was a mess).

... wrote a gazillion words for it.

(Maybe some more things too, but I cannot recall them right now.)

And while this is not a fandom thing at all, I also finally looked into Victorian stuff because of Kuro. Being an anime fan was still a relatively "odd" thing to be in 2015 where I live (especially being a female anime/manga fan; it started turning around at that time at least), but "I look into these historical things because of a popular media I like" still sounded/sounds more "normal" than "I look into these historical things just because."

(The other day I had the Wikipedia article on Brighton's West Pier open when my brother came into my room. "Do you want to go there? *sees it's in England* Ah, Black Butler research, huh?")

To graduate from school in Germany (to get your Abitur), you, i.a., need to do 5 exams: 3 written ones, 1 oral one, and 1 "other" one. It can be a presentation (the vast majority of people pick that), a documented competition entry (this is rarely done), or a 20-page-long thesis (not that often done but not as rare as the competition entry). I chose to do the thesis. Remember Helena and Arwyn from WotQ's "Laughing Together" chapter? I did my thesis on deaf history/culture/biology because of the little sign language research I did for that chapter.

I got my master's diploma last week, at last (it took a while because my uni just straight up lost some documents). I did my master's thesis, i.a., on Victorian marriage :) (Why else would I have been terrorising you with that topic for years, heh?) I still would not consider myself an expert on that subject, but I do know more about it than the average person at least^^

(I still have a lot of nonfiction that I need to finish reading, and got a brand new one on death and mourning in the Victorian era as a graduation gift, so get ready for more terrorising in the future <3*)

*I do read slowly though.

The Kuro fandom is a handful but I would lie if I said I didn't have it almost as dear as I have the manga itself. And I have the manga so very dear^^

6 days to go of the completion of 6th month of their contact marriage aka 7th day from when Arnav started his quest to khushi's heart (aka 8th August)

The only partially-good thing he did that day was 'I love you, damn it.'

why it is the next day: (Arnav said last day that 'tomorrow is our suhagraat' and khushi said to di that 'in tomorrow's puja the shank will be with you' and everyone kept saying 'kal ki puja')

5 days to go to the completion of their marriage contact aka 8th day from when arnav started the countdown (aka 9th August)

why it is next day: (khushi woke up in the same attire of last night)

Arnav decided to marry khushi with full religious rituals and he got to hear 'I love you too,damn it' from khushi.

He did the deed,that he should had done days ago but couldn't , seek khushi's forgiveness.

4 days to go to the end of their contact marriage aka 9th day of the countdown (aka 10th August)

why it is next day:everyone kept saying sagun is next day.

I guess the point of this countdown is not valid anymore as we are at their Sagun ceremony.They were going to remarry soon.

Khushi admitted that she was his all along and Arnav got to know how much khushi respect his belief. So he made a concious effort to know about all the rituals of marriage for her, so that he could perform them properly for her.

3 days left of their contact marriage aka 10th day of the count down (aka 11th August)

why it is next day: ( 'coz Nk said in sagun that kal hum doka main milenge 😁)

Arnav and khushi got engaged and the fact that arnav put efforts to learn about rituals made khushi very happy.

Arnav showered khushi with kisses at the same spot where once upon a time a kiss was supposed to happen.

khushi beautifully address herself as 'singh raizada'.

he appointed a trained nurse for her father so that her mother could attend all the functions.

He chatted with her over phone before falling asleep.

2 days to to the completion of contact marriage of arnav and khushi aka 11 th day of the countdown (aka 12 August).

why it is next day: ( buaji was telling garima about the roka ceremony and then said in next day's kuldevi's puja you would be with me.I hope buaji was telling garima about the engagement ceremony that very day,not like 10 days later.)

Arnav entered the temple to accompany her to seek permission of her bestfriend for their marriage.

he said her that he loved the way she is and she didn't need to change at their date.

he also cheered her up when she messed up.

1 day to go aka 12th day of the countdown of Arnav and khushi's 6 month old contact marriage (aka 13 August)

why it is next day:( At their date the last day anjali asked shyam how would he come to the next day's function.)

Arnav sweetly recalled their mehendi moment.

He also tied her opened dori and had mehendi on his hand only for her.

He opened up to her fully about his past and shared his sorrows with her, letting her console him.

It's a little moment but its my fav, when he was flashbacking about anjali, then about shyam-khushi, he got frustrated and broke a vase,but later he was very calm and patient with khushi.

I went from being like neutrally aware of the Sonic franchise characters' existence to totally obsessed practically overnight with Shadow and Sonadow. Went full speed ahead brainrot on them because of a freaking dream where cartoon (unspecified) Sonic & co accidentally entered the dimension of live action Sonic. Shenanigans ensued, most notably a dreambrain-hatched live action Shadow fighting his cartoon version because of his attitude toward Sonic & co.

A few nights ago I had a random as hell dream about Sonic the hedgehog and I am now here I have watched freaking Sonic Prime on Netflix because the mental images wouldn't leave me alone so I treated it like a weird message from the universe e send Help

My only previous interactions with sonic stuff was some person I followed on twitter for something else posting art of it (mega long time ago), watching the sonic live action movies why I have no idea (super long time ago), and that joke game that went surprisingly hard The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog which I completed even though the minigames to progress got hard AF for me (pretty long time ago) and like even before all that I knew of Sonic from ads, memes, and various posts on social medias. But I didn't fully engage with it.

Side note: the twitter posting was mostly sonadow and I would look it over like uh-huh ok the vibes check out and just keep scrolling like lsdfkjdskl but that is pretty much the main reason I knew Sonic/Shadow existed but at the time I didn't actively seek it out or try to learn more.

Onward...

My brain is so so so weird and the dream was somewhat vivid like watching a movie omg where the live action sonic and pals met the cartoon versions of the characters?? even though I never watched any of the cartoons before??? as such it wasn't a specific series, I just knew it in the dream they were from a generalized cartoon universe

Specifically it was Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the movie group, while the cartoon group had Amy and Rouge instead of the other two alongside Sonic, who I only even really knew about because of the April Fool's game. And Shadow was also there in both groups because why not I guess and they (the Shadows) fought each other because the movie one thought the cartoon one was a jerk lmao idk? Yeah my subconscious decided it couldn't wait for Sonic 3 and made up its own version of movie Shadow.

Early in the dream there was also a little kid clone of Sonic who belonged with the cartoon group. There were some cute interactions but in nonsensical dream fashion that character just disappeared later like he was never there lol

…There was some plot about the cartoon group needing to get back to their dimension because Sonic accidentally got them blasted into the movie one somehow... after watching Sonic Prime I'm like my dream was so FREAKISHLY similar to that show's plot, but I SWEAR I knew nothing about the premise of SP before the dream. Although, in the dream they were like... multidimensional travellers doing hero stuff and had met other variants before, just this time it wasn't intentional and it messed something up.

Uh getting off track... (which the dream itself did a lot tbf)

Anyway, what I remember is the movie dimension made the cartoon group look in the more realistic style so at first Shadow thought the actual movie group were the ones from his dimension (Shadow & Amy got separated from Sonic & Rouge) and was rude to them because he was so ticked off blaming Sonic for being a dumbass and yelling at Tails for not preventing whatever happened or something, so actual movie Shadow appeared like. don't talk to my friends that way asshole and beat the absolute shit out of him. There was an explanation Tails gave that the movie Shadow was more powerful for some reason I don't remember and Amy told cartoon Shadow to stop trying to beat him. But yeah bro was so pissed movie Sonic had to step in and physically stop him because he wouldn't listen to and/or overpowered anyone else. He reminded Shadow that the other Shadow was still him, in a sense.

Cartoon Sonic and Rouge appeared and Sonic started bickering with cartoon Shadow. but the movie versions were best friends so they were watching them like wtf is wrong with y'all. Movie Shadow got fed up quickly and punched cartoon Shadow again and stood protectively in front of both Sonic versions bristling and wouldn't take his eyes off his counterpart. Cartoon Shadow was so goddamn confused by Shadow's protectiveness and asked how Sonic had made movie Shadow his loyal bodyguard (derogatory) Amy and Rouge like explained the backstory to the movie crew, which is fuzzy to me but it was something along the lines of, Shadow had been brainwashed to rival Sonic, tricked to think that Sonic was evil (unbeknownst to that Sonic who in his pov had this random edgy hedgehog start attacking him out of nowhere during a mission) and they had a lot of intense fighting before Shadow found out the truth. But the two of them never quite got over the misunderstanding. Listen I didn't know Shadow's backstory, literally none of it, but I have read the wiki since ok

Meanwhile movie Shadow, in the dream, was made and raised in a lab and similarly believed he was made as Sonic's rival/equal. Behind the scenes some government thing or whatever were afraid of Sonic's power and wanted a backup plan. But some evil guy stole and unleashed Shadow. At first it was basically just a duel, Shadow admired Sonic, but the evil guy had put a chip in his head that when activated made him try to kill Sonic. Eventually he was subdued and the chip deactivated- and despite everything Sonic insisted Shadow come with him to his home and the rest was history. This unfolded in like flashback style.

There was a funny part where Shadow questioned Sonic's home like "What kind of base of operations is this?" In a very unimpressed tone. Sonic said sarcastically "Oh, sorry if you were expecting my own Fortress of Solitude." And I guess Shadow was allowed to watch tv because he got the reference and shot back "Does that make me Lois Lane?" Didn't make a whole lot of sense sdlfkjds but movie Shadow delivered this line very confidently and flirtatious and just walked away leaving Sonic shocked LOL

And then later Shadow complained that the government people would always rewind and loop the villainy parts and he never got to see if Lois and Clark kissed (It's been too long since I watched any Superman movies so I couldn't tell you if this makes sense) and Knuckles teased him for being a romantic, and then the whole team binge watched every Superman movie.

In the "present" at some point movie Sonic and Shadow pulled their alternate versions aside and like told them off for being mean to each other lmao cartoon Sonic was kinda like uwu I didn't know Shadow had feelings he's like a lone wolf and like was surprised by his counterpart's vehemence. Movie Sonic told cartoon Sonic that Shadow can be a great friend if you give him a chance. I don't remember the Shadowses convo much but it was a lot more chill despite the fighting before (though still prickly) because Shadow's reasons were more valid and it was more of a pep talk from movie Shadow that if he opened up more it might give the others around him more opportunity to know and accept him.

I remember there was this one specific heavy emotional line in the dream that stuck with me when I woke up said by cartoon Shadow about Sonic, "He's my best friend but I'm obviously not his" DFKLJDSKJ

Additional small detail that movie Sonic and Shadow had known each other for over 2 years during dream events. And they were quite close and in sync. But still bantery

My brain basically conjured a LITERAL FANFICTION in my sleep and I have been thinking about it a lot What's hilarious is I knew next to fuck all about these characters my brain pulled the plot points of this dream out of its ass

Typed out, this dream probably sounds a lot longer than it was... the "scenes" just felt oddly detailed for how mashed together and quick passing they were.

But yeah I kept thinking about the dream and like daydreaming more scenes and it somehow turned even more into Sonadow (like, I imagined Cartoon Sonic & Shadow finding out in a very abrupt way that the movie versions were an item. <- to my delight I did find a fic with a premise very similar to this just not movie universe related. Also played with the idea of Sonic and/or Shadow accidentally kissing the wrong counterpart in their excitement at being reunited which Awakened Some Things for the receiver of the unexpected passion😂 )

The dream kinda acted as a base that inspired daydreams to spiral out from my brain without permission but I just... mentally jumped into it because ships sometimes grab you like that.

And Sonic Prime made my sprouting interest worse, basically fuel to the fire, so now I am obsessed with them... like what a fucking way to get into a ship

We've been thinking about what makes a home for us what with the stage in healing and life we are in, and also our fiance is working through some trauma stuff and his panic disorder - before it started getting better - was getting concerning as it began to teeter briefly into borderline agoraphobia

And its really made us realize a thing. A lot of people see their home as The Place They Live, and so their home is a safe place, the default place they are when they don't have any explicit plans. It's a safe and predictable place to "idle" in

But I realize we have never.... really considered that a home could be seen as such. Yeah we've known that on like a definition and logical sense, but emotionally? A home - for us - has always been the place you return to after engaging in life. It's more of a lion's den or a crow's roost than it is a Place I Live

And the idea of living at my home.... I don't really know if I think that is better or worse than what I do. I'm not too sure if I think it is good or not to "live" at home - not on an emotional or logical level. I'm really ambivalent about it.

I think the truth is that there is something to learn from both perspectives of what a "home" is (especially in relation to life) and being able to jump between the two is the ideal

But I dunno, its a new concept and thing I've been thinking about.

Not actually a hobby(?) for me:

After I received your ask, once I did a cursory search on hobbies, I realized that I was likely mistaken and that resource gathering is probably not primarily a mere hobby for me. (Though my collection of interesting words might become one. My commonplace quotes, probably not so much.)

For me, researching and collecting information is possibly a reocccurring hyperfixation and/or special interest (SpIn).

I will have to look into what hobbies are again as I didn't really need to know before & went along with my life fine only knowing about it through context clues and such.

My motivations for research/collecting:

My reasons/motivations for collecting resources (especially with tags on tumblr) include:

the practicality of having a collection of resources

my increased need for accessibility/ease of access (and thus conservation of energy)

wanting to preserve what resources I find so I can find them again

the ease of sharing the collection with others, directly (sharing a link to or knowledge from a resource) or indirectly (through a perusable blog or other directory)

the sense of accomplishment I get from adding to a usable & useful collection (it feels similar to Katamari Damacy - ★ beware of horror elements in that game ★)

the potential ease of archiving/porting my collection to an easier place to access/read it all (ex: e-reader, print)

I'm also making up for lost time, as unfortunately I didn't have enough access to resources to aid me with understanding how my brain and body functions during my childhood.

But now I can hopefully learn more about that, while researching related topics & topics to help me understand other people better (especially allistic people; I don't know where to start on researching the assumed default/actual default(?) neurotype.)

Topics:

I haven't discovered my favorite research topic yet; but besides practical resources, "adulting" resources"-

( @adulting-dance is my sideblog for those adulting resources, themed around the Phineas and Ferb cartoon- which despite being a D!sney property and having some unintended ableism and racism within, is still great at helping with acceptance of neurodivergence and weirdness in my opinion. The cartoon has Dr Heinz Doofensmirtz in the B-Plot, who is one of my favorite neurodivergent [his traumatic backstories indicate cptsd] and specifically adhd-coded characters ever.)

- and the concept of unitypunk I have recently discovered- I like researching writing and the practicalities of how to work within other creative mediums like theater, roleplaying, gaming, and "the arts", along with the subgenres and subcultures of those mediums.

A broad focus, I know, but given my ADHD, I tend to "rabbithole" and happen across many different topics, especially on Tumblr.

Research process:

I make use of the search engines 4get and Marginalia (old, new), along with Tumblr (findtags- old, new) and a frontend for youtube called Invidious (with alternative frontend including Piped, Poke! and Cloudtube). I will also browse PeerTube (an alternative videohosting platform) once I have a better understanding of it.

I don't have much of a defined workflow, but I plan to study researching itself in the future (mostly general and nonscientific/nonacademic).

I may make further posts on what I use/plan to use in my researching endeavors in the future, whether here or in a new sideblog or even a nontumblr blog.

"Aka? You home?" E called out not wanting to snoop around, her house was the one they never hung out at so he didn't know his way around. "I wouldn't usually just let myself in like this but I wanted to make sure you got the work....I'm sure you want to graduate on time with-"

E was cut off as he heard like a bunch of stuff crashing down upstairs and ignoring their previous concern of privacy invasion sprited upstairs, "Aka?! Are you alright?"

E slowly opened the door to a terribly neat bedroom compared to what e had seen downstairs. The only thing of notice was her laptop, covered in glue on gems and ribbons, open to a spreadsheet on line 528.

"What was she looking at?" It wasn't like em to go through anothers things, but at this rate, curiosity would have killed the cat if e didn't check.

Cyril scrolled up a little skimming the spreadsheet seeing things like

"What are you doing in my house?!" A shocked Aka screamed as she stepped out of the closet.

Before Cyril could explain emself she had slammed the computer and has snatched it away holding it close like someone trying to stop their crush from reading ones diary.

"I-i'm sorry Aka, I- I had just come to....Are you okay?" E stopped noticing her bruised up arms.

"I'm....I'm fine Cyril...If this is about how much school I've been missing th-"

"It was, but now im.more worried about what's in front of me. Aka, what's going on?"

"Everyone's been worried and...you're scarying me..."

Aka hesitated holding her computer tighter before relenting and setting it down.

"Its a spreadsheet of curses,"

"Are you planning on- I know you've enjoyed anything that vaugly seemed to be...magic but-"

"And how to keep them at bay."

"What..."

"Magic is real. And I am cursed. With....a lot."

"Wha- how?"

"Saturday the 21st. That night we all went camping...that gem I found was some sort of sprit...and that started it all." She opened her computer back up doing him a document with a bunch of links and research.

"So I found some dark web magic groups and tried to reverse it but in trying to get the resources I got another...and another....and another...I had to start keeping a spreadsheet just to keep track of how to prevent them from getting out of hand."

"...I...Wow. What...The actual, fuck Aka?"

"How was i supposed to-"

"No, your right sorry. That came out wrong... I meant i can't believe you're handling this all on your own...I can understand not telling us its not anything like that. Just...wow. You've been...wow."

"Yeah..I swear I'm still trying to figure out how to get rid of even just one of these. Like I still have my first curse. Its like the universe is out to get me specificly! Everytime I try i get another curse and SURE the logical thing would be to stop and learn to live with what I am dealing with but I can't live like this! Constantly behind in school, always having to plan my life around these damn things!"

It does suck. Ah, Teyvat - what an enigma it was. You do not speak highly of Mondstadt - I'm rather interested. If comfortable, do tell more, I'm curious to see how aligned our memories are. Despite being from vastly different areas, my interest prevails.

I suppose we do have something in common for certain though, family woes seem to follow us both.

That might take an entire library of books to explain Mondstadt and its history but to shortly summarise it: every nation was in a constant state of war and had a great many of internal civil armed conflicts. Each major one that ended with one faction winning over the other had a full history/evidence sweep just to make deciphering previous events harder.

Mondstadt of my time was a post-colonialist, libertarian hellhole with royalty transforming into oligarchy. The 'colonialist' part was the one swiped under the rug, because nobody heard of any colonies... largely because the knowledge of them was wiped out or they got all killed. It made maps really confusing and I am fairly certain that there was a country between Sumeru and Mondstadt that was axed around 100 years before I got born and merged into both. The bigger mystery was if there was anything outside of Teyvat (including underground) because the continent was completely gridlocked. I was a part of a network of informants and we had contacts that helped people escape but due to how dangerous it was - we never learnt what happened afterwards becuase none of us had enough data to make the full picture. It sounds like we were very organised but we were all just trying to hoard anything - art, music, photos, literature - and decipher them to learn about the past ... or the present.

In legal terms just pertaining to Mondstadt - being gay was decriminalised when I was 10 and you still risked being institutionalised or sent to a work camp (my Teyvat loved those and refugee camps which were still work camps but with more prison thrown into the mix). Liyue sort of stopped persecuting homosexuality but the laws were unclear and any queer club was technically illegal. The one me and my best friend loved to go to was raided each month. Slavery was made illegal around 50 years before I was born in phases but ... only when it pertained citizens of Mondstadt so if someone wanted to buy a whole person abroad - they could but transporting them into the borders was illegal. Once you managed that? Nobody persecuted those that wished to own human beings. Health care was ... dubious - we had clinics and hospitals but they were all paid - insurance as a concept never existed and there was no such thing as mental heath care. We started to get therapists but they were horrid at best and dangerous at worst - when I booked an appointment with one to get advice on being sober - he told me to stop being gay and that alcohol addiction was just media propaganda. Employee rights or employment overall was a wild west because there was no laws beyond working hours and the best one could do, if you had a business, was to make everyone business partners because then they could be a legal party in court cases if they got harmed during work.

The problem was that ... all of the nations were like this besides Natlan, which had a permament civil war and was pretty much a wasteland. Armies from other nations sent units there if they wanted to rake in funding, because the factions in the conflict kept changing every week so one could really hone on the populism.

Sometime before I died - we did get into something of a World War 2 if one would consider the Cataclysm the World War 1 (in my history - it was pretty much an armed conflict as our Archons were only present when they wished to cause gigantic natural disasters while those in the source's canon were something akin to our prophets so they served as body vessels but they were also their own people) and it went badly to the extent loads of people died or I died in a specific operation (of evacuating people) - hard to say. My memories are a bit weird and messy nowadays due to brain damage sponsored by a dead brain tumour and an older case of amnesia so the problem is that they get tangled with the history of areas that my current relatives live or are from. They all had similar events and backgrounds but over a longer period of time and a larger area. For example - one place had a whole language axed by nationalism and gentrification plus war propaganda and it led to nobody remembering the written form so history of the region is only present in the form of being passed down to younger generations.

I am trying to write everything down whenever I go down a rabbit hole of thinking about a subject but it will take years :') . Sorry for the waffle but I am a history nerd and I'd love to know which area are you from and how does it differ from mine or its depiction. I did run into people with many different interesting histories - none were as extremely differing as I think mine is (but I bet I am a grain of sand on the beach, because most folks probably don't write on the internet, so I am willing to guess that there is much more awful versions and hell - this planet has worse countries in contemporary history).

Yvelse Lesson 1: Back to Basics

Because you can't learn a language without first knowing how to read it.

Welcome back! Been a while. But since you now know why I'm here infodumping about a fictional language, we can actually start, ah, you listening to me infodump about a fictional language.

Yvelse has a pretty easy phonology, until you get to the parts where even I'm not sure why I did what I did. Let's pretend everything makes sense and ignore the parts that don't, shall we? And, ah, promise not to get mad at me when we get to the consonants.

There are five vowels in Yvelse, as follows (in romanization and English alphabetical order): A: Going to be level with you, this one is a mess. Formally, a word which here means "it was written down this way in my Google doc which is only usually correct," until the writing of this post, this vowel was pronounced [ɑ] when lengthened or occurring before a syllable-ending consonant, and [ə] elsewhere. That is not how I've been pronouncing words like ansec (bake) and aϕel (sunset/sunrise). So I took a minute out of writing this post to add "at the start of a word" to the list of conditions for [ɑ]. Better, except even though words like tsetsa (star) are as you'd expect, I'm still not pronouncing words like saha (cat) or sa (and) with a schwa at the end (or at all, in the case of the former). I can't figure out if I need to shape up, or if Yvelse needs a new clause for this vowel, just... feel it in your heart. You probably won't need to pass as having a native accent anyway. E: [ɛ]. That's all. It's voiceless at the ends of words but connects to another E at the start of the next word if there is one. No, I don't know why. O: [o]. You are safe here. U: [u]. You are safe here as well. Y: [ji] at the start of a word, and [i] elsewhere. You are in only mild danger here.

The consonants are more straightforward. So much so, in fact, that I'm not going to bother listing every single one: just the ones that either need a moment of explanation or will make people mad at me.

C: [k]. It's an artifact of a character name—I wasn't about to make him go by Lakuna. (Even if he was, technically, given the name of an English word.) Don't worry, this is universal and consistent. F: You know this one. V: You also know this one. ϕ: Exactly what it looks like it is. In IPA to distinguish it from [f]. β: Exactly what it looks like it is. In IPA to distinguish it from [v]. R: Where is—which is it—[ɹ]. If you speak English, you probably understand this one. L: You know this one. ɾ: Exactly what it looks like it is. In IPA because R was already taken, and, though L is a less great substitute, that was also already taken.

Everything else you may encounter is exactly what it looks like it is. Except for [ts] and [ʃ], they're all the same in IPA and romanization anyway.

Hey, you did promise not to get mad about the consonants.

Yvelse also has its own writing system, but for the sake of "I don't really have a way to incorporate it anywhere" we'll gloss over it at least for now.

I'll close this post off with the number system. Can't really wait to explain that sort of thing.

Yvelse uses a base-eight system, derived from the eight phases of the moon. The first nine numerals, starting from zero, are as follows: 0: nyc 1: sen 2: levy 3: con 4: tantsutu 5: vly 6: heva 7: pol 10 (8): shoncu

After shoncu, the next seven numbers attach the prefix shon- to the number in the ones digit, kind of like the -teen suffix in English.

11 (9): shonsen 12 (10): shonlevy etc.

When you reach 20 (16), a number will start with the name of the digit in the eights place, and carry on as in the "teens"—even at an even eight. Here, you'll see:

20 (16): levy shonnyc 24 (20): levy shontantsutu 30 (24): con shonnyc 40 (32): tantsutu shonnyc etc.

100 (64) is read as showotse, and 200 (128) as levy showotse, similarly to how the eights work. Typically a large rounded number like this will be assumed to be an approximation, so if you'd like to stress that there really are exactly 384 of something, you can say heva showotse nyc (six sixty-fours zero).

Now you can count in Yvelse all the way up to 777 (448)!

Non-numeric vocabulary: Adjectives aϕy: Red, with positive connotation—like a sunset. cereln-noleme: Green, lit. "land-colored." Often shortened to cereln for convenience, which I'm sure kicked off both a convention of pulling in just any old noun to use as a color name and a bit of grammatical debate for the particularly pedantic. cor: Red, with negative connotation—like blood. mele: Pink, purple, and any color between the two. neɾa: Gray oɾatse: Dark blue ren: Blue, of something other than the sky. shen: Black vesha: Blue, of the sky or something considered to be sky-colored. ytan: White ϕylc-noleme: Yellow, lit. "bird-colored." Often shortened to ϕylc in the same vein as cereln. Nouns atsel: Evening or early morning. When the sun is not above the horizon or even shedding much light, but the sky is still lighter than at night. aϕel: Sunset or sunrise. etse: Sun lavel: In my notes it's "dawn or dusk," but not really—it's the time ranging from when it starts to get dark to the twilight time covered by atsel.
