Fieldwork doesn’t stop just because it is cold and snowy! Many courses at COA use Acadia National Park (and other natural landscapes) as a year-round outdoor classroom. In the fall, you may learn about national park education initiatives in Bonnie Tai’s class, Experiential Education; wintertime may have you surveying snowy owls atop Sargent Mountain in Steve Ressel’s Winter Ecology class; and in the spring, Catherine Clinger’s Drawing Mineral and Botanical Matter may bring you to the Wild Gardens of Acadia to sketch and paint the budding life. Whatever the season and area of study, we can promise that a good deal of your learning will happen outside.

Our first day with a work from home mom has already been a great success. 🌱 We got out and enjoyed some morning sunshine - finally getting some of that all important before noon sun. 🌱 We decided to add some color to one of our favorite activities - mud painting. The sprouts explored so many great skills pouring and stirring in beet root powder and turmeric to make shades of yellow and red and using brushes, sticks, needles, cars, and of course their hands to make their artwork. 🌱 The only prep was cutting up a giant cardboard box that was just perfect to make canvases and bringing out the spices. The muffin tin and brushes stay in our mud kitchen. 🌱 As a mom it is so easy for me to get stuck in the perfectionist trap, especially when I find myself comparing to other Instagram moms. I’d love if we had wild berries and other flowers growing in the yard to mix with, or if my spices were in perfect glass jars (or if I would have used that beet root sport powder as a work out supplement as planned 😂), but the Sprouts aren’t concerned with any of that, and we’ve all had the perfect morning out under the pecan trees (minus fighting the mosquitoes). 🌱 Anyway just a gentle reminder to #takeimperfectactions, take and post the pictures - after you put your phone down and play in the mud. #begoodstewards #wildandfreekids #1000hoursoutside #mudpainting #lastchildinthewoods #learnoutside #playwithmud #freerangekids #outdoorhomeschool (at Anderson, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD_p9jjpwHP/?igshid=mezyzcwsho6g
