THE OUTSIDERS AS GEN Z

Dally listens to vulgar rap without headphones or with shitty wired earphones at max volume so everyone is forced to hear it anyway. When he’s in the car he blasts it so loud it makes passing children cry.

Two-Bit is an incomprehensible texter (bc he’s always drunk texting) & Darry texts like a dad with stuff like ‘I am outside.’ ‘Ok.’ ‘Yes 🙂’

Steve gets into arguments with people on Twitter every day and only avoids getting cancelled because he’s friends with Soda who’s lowkey internet famous

Pony is an Ao3 and Tumblr fiend. Has a 12-hour a day screentime and is always hiding his screen from the others so they can’t see the fics he’s reading or writing. Darry gave up trying to enforce screentime limits.

I feel like Johnny would be the only one who knows Pony’s Ao3 user (and maybe Soda too) but it doesn’t even matter because neither of them can read for shit so they aren’t gonna be reading Pony’s 100k+ word slowburns

On that note Johnny & Soda have dyslexia and Soda also has ADHD

Dally has a succession of jailbroken stolen iPhones that are always cracked as shit. Sometimes he just doesn’t have a phone for weeks.

Pony has the most pretentious aesthetic Instagram feed imaginable. Photos of sunsets every evening with classic book quotes over them and stuff like that

Hello sorry if this is a bit intrusive and a weird question to ask but, can i ask what you went to school for and how that's effected your writing? Do you want to go back to school if you're graduated?

Also what are some of your favourite books/ what made you want to be a writer?

not intrusive at all! i studied english literature at undergrad, looking at all periods from old english all the way up to contemporary world literature. i then did a master's degree in american literature, with a focus on fiction post-1945. i wound up looping in a lot of film, tv, and other cultural studies into that as well — for example the true crime economy. part of me will always miss that world and long to do a phd but for now i'm glad to be out of academia; i was at a fairly prestigious and therefore restrictive institution that didn't really know what to do with a multi-media scholar like me, and i always wanted to introduce more rhetorical & creative flair into my analysis than was really strictly appropriate (bringing back the days of novels as thesises when??). i'm in a good place rn in terms of doing some cultural/media criticism on my own time and in less formal ways a la letterboxd, personal essays etc. what i do miss is institutional library access. [redacted online university library browser] my beloved.

favourite books, hmmmm. all time favourite is alas still infinite jest by david foster wallace. i don't necessarily aspire to its magnitude or pretension but everytime i pick it up i want to go and write something myself, which is invaluable and really says it all.

some recent favourites would be south and west by joan didion, nevada by imogen binnie, tar baby by toni morrison, a confederacy of dunces by john kennedy toole, and no country for old men by cormac mccarthy. i don't read a lot of what's 'current', if nothing else because i tend to buy most of my books secondhand, and honestly a lot of recent 'trendier' stuff has a style that isn't to my taste (ocean vuong, for example, i can't stand). next up on my list is probably catching up on some nabokov, as well as some more barbara kingsolver and annie proulx. (it goes almost without saying that i love lolita, demon copperhead, and brokeback mountain.)

as for what made me want to be a writer, well, it's just kind of always what i've done and always what i've wanted to do. as for whether it's a viable career path, well, we'll see. for now i'm writing like a fiend and long may it continue.

First of all I love the sheep plushie idea. That is canon to me now.

Actually.. perhaps in addition to that, I think he might collect plushies. When the bed isn't in fighting mode, it is lined with his stuffed friends :]

Also, he seems like the type to name all of his plushies. Except because it's Bedman, they all have complicated and refined names.

Kind of canon, but his buckwheat pillow is his #1 comfort item.

A sweet older brother hc for you, I think Delilah struggles with sleep deprivation, which leads to Bedman throwing together warm milk with cinnamon and honey for her. He's been doing it since they were younger, and she still asks for it now. They both swear by it working.

Bedman has.. interesting music taste. While you'd expect him to mostly listen to something classical, that's a rare piece of his taste. I don't know why, but some part of me feels like he would love something like Love Live. I am chuckling at the mental image of Romeo listening to silly anime girl music.

On the topic of music, I think he knows how to play piano. It's a random thing he learned as a child that stuck with him.

Adding to both of those above. Rhythm game fiend. He's crazy good at stuff like Bandori, Taiko no Tatsujin, Osu!, etc etc.

Oh my gosh I almost forgot. I think, though part of me feels this is canon, that he is a huge cinema nerd. Google show me this guy's letterboxd account.

Additional thought, I think maybe he likes Studio Ghibli and Wes Anderson movies. They're sort of comforting to him.

And I don't know that their one confirmed movie day we know of took place there but it was one of their best moments from last year.

I don't think it's far fetched that Finn and Noah bonding over film together was a big part of their friendship (and maybe more) during the filming era. And that's really wonderful.

i wish i had more to say about movies. maybe i need to give myself permission to just ramble more and say whatever comes to mind, even though doing so will reveal to you even more of my inanity.

i really like late malick actually. at least, i like the way the camera moves and how the movements are woven together. and i like how the dialogue/scenes are fragmented. and yet the spell does wear off even for me by the one hour mark, and sours by the end when it all amounts to what i perceive to be nothing but the most banal of christian worldviews.

this is only my second rivette. he seems like a fiend for a big house.

i keep watching jordan peele's movies and i never really like them lmao. can't shake the feeling they are fundamentally still his comedy sketches just stretched to cinema size. uninteresting all around for me.
