Thursday, April 3: Light the Torch, "Pull My Heart Out"

Devil You Know changing their name to Light the Torch didn’t signify any change in their approach, as Revival offered exactly the same brand of metalcore that the Howard Jones-fronted semi-supergroup delivered on their previous two records.  Then again, the name change was mostly due to legal issues with their former drummer, so tunes like “Pull My Heart Out” weren’t supposed to be anything different, and indeed the track was a more polished version of the melodrama Jones first iterated during his tenure with Killswitch Engage.  The tune chugged and sort of slammed while Jones bellowed his feelings, and Francesco Artusato focused squarely on hooks.  This sound was long past its due date by 2018, but in a way it was actually a bit of a relief to hear a bunch of journeymen lean so hard on what they knew as opposed to glomming on to whatever was prevalent in metal at the time: these guys knew their craft and skillset, and “Pull My Heart Out” leveraged their expertise was well-executed metalcore.
