Been thinking way too much about Republic City and its potential for being like, a cesspit of different prejudices etc, particularly in relation to the bending brothers. Like I feel like there should be a difference in how Mako, a firebender with stereotypically Fire Nation features and Bolin, an earthbender with stereotypically Earth Kingdom features would be treated. Or how they would be treated as mixed race kids in genral.
Like we know the area that would later become Republic City had been a Fire Nation colony for ages, with people of the two nations intermingling and mixing, but there seemed to still be a clear financial/class divide between Fire nation citizens and Earth kingdom citizens.

And while this isn't ever addressed directly in tlok, one of the wealthiest families in Republic City is descended from those first colonists in the area. I'm sorry I don't believe Hiroshi's story about being a shoeshiner he's a nepo baby in my soul.
Hell, even the leader of the Triple Threat Triad, the largest and oldest triad in Republic City was a firebender, only offset by Amon, a completely new and unexpected variable, entering the scene.

Which brings me back to my thoughts on the bending brothers. Zolt, the original leader of the Triple Threats is the one who taught Mako lightningbending.
Bryan: Um, but anyways, we had this little backstory idea that Mako learned it from Zolt, from runnin' around [Mike affirms.] with the Triple Threat Triads, that he...
A lot of people have made theories about this, since it's weird that the leader of this successful triad would take interest in a kid that allegedly just ran numbers for them and stuff. And I tend to agree with the theory that Zolt wanted Mako to be drawn in more into the triads, and maybe even saw Mako as a potential replacement for him as the triad's leader.
Which, Mako certainly has traits that would make him a good triad leader, though I wonder if Mako being a talented firebender also had something to do with this decision.
I just wonder about how Bolin and Mako may find themselves treated differently, not only due to their personalities, but also due to the traits they manifest. Not only as kids of people from two nations that historicaly had a lot of beef in the area. And 80 years isn't that much time in the grand scale of things.

I wonder if lingering stereotypes have latched onto the brothers and affected how they grew up. It also adds a new interesting dimension to Bolin being so excited about visiting the Earth Kingdom, having such an adoration of Toph and being so commited to the Earth Empire cause.
Honestly, this is all just speculation and probably not all in line with canon, but I've just been thinking a lot about the bending bros' childhood in Republic City and the like. And a missed opportunity for world building in the show.

#8. "You did it! You really did it! I'm so proud of you!" Zolt and Mako?
oh, dear, anon... I hope this works out ok for you.
If not, let me know and I'll try again
So Proud
The overhead lightbulb blazed through Mako’s closed eyelids, jolting him awake. He grabbed his blanket and curled into a ball, his back to the wicked man in the door.
“Go away.”
“Aww, did little big man get too much to drink last night? C’mon Mako, off your back and get dressed. If we don’t go soon, this storm will blow over.”
“Next time.”
This time, Zolt kicked the leg of his bed, giving him a different jolt.
“You’ve been begging for months. This is the best storm we’ve had in weeks. Get up.”
Mako’s blanket ripped away and dropped in front of his knees. The cold air rushed over his exposed skin, and he shivered. Zolt’s huge, rough hand came down firmly on his shoulder. Startled, Mako opened his eyes, but kept still. He felt a sense of comfort that confused him.
Zolt wasn’t a nice man. Mako had watched him beat up members of other triads, even seen him shock business owners over protection money. He said mean things to the younger members of the Threats, like Shady Shin. He hadn’t been mean to Bolin, but something told Mako that wouldn’t last forever.
But Zolt trained him. Made sure they both had a place to stay. They never had enough to get away, but they didn’t starve, either. Mako was old enough to know some of the ways other kids got by in the triads, and he had fought every day to keep that from happening to either of them. And that usually meant keeping Zolt happy.
He sighed.
“Fine. Let me get dressed.”
With his back turned, Mako didn’t realize Zolt had left until the door snapped shut.
Once outside, however, he began to wonder why he’d bothered.
The rain was pelting down, and the clouds overhead were dark and angry. A rumble of thunder told him he’d missed at least one lightning strike.
“C’mon, kid. We need to be at the park already.”
For an old guy, Zolt could bolt when he wanted to. It wasn’t often. Something about ‘dignity,’ he’d said once. Mako grimaced, and raced after his boss.
Once in the park, Zolt waved him over to a small concession stand that was closed for the season. Under the overhang, he pulled Mako under his arm, pointing at the sky with his free hand.
“There’s only one airbender, Mako, so you have to learn how the clouds move from people like me.” He dropped his hand, and bent to look at Mako. “Settle down. You’re breathing too hard.”
Mako met Zolt’s eye, and nodded.
He closed his eyes, and concentrated on his breathing, the way they had been working on for months. Expanding his lungs, pulling in the air, and feeling the energy spread throughout his body. He held his breath and felt the tingle of his bending along his back and arms.
But he held it a little too long, and his body forced the air out, then a new breath in.
“Slow down. Balance, kid.”
Silently, Mako nodded.
Around him, the rain continued its insistent rythym, but it was soothing, somehow.
“Face me.”
Zolt released him, and they faced each other, the way so many of their practices began.
“You have to keep the positive and the negative energy apart. Like making sure the Threats and the Kais don’t get too close. Because what happens when they do?”
Mako still remembered the last time. “We fight.”
In front of him, he saw Zolt wave his arms, one up toward his shoulder, the other down, toward his knees. His upper hand inscribed a full circle, and Mako pulled back from the sizzle in the air.
Zolt brought his right hand down quickly, then back up, pointing at the sky.
His trademark lightning bolt surged up to the clouds, dazzling Mako’s vision.
Zolt brought his hands together and tugged on his jacket. He just raised an eyebrow at Mako, and Mako knew what came next.
He centered himself and copied Zolt’s motions, without pulling on his chi. He bent his knees to steady his posture, and rehearsed the movement again. When he thrust his hands to the sky, he imagined what it would feel like.
“Enough playing. Try it for real.”
Mako met Zolt’s eyes, and focused on his… on Zolt.
This time, he could feel the crackle of energy - it was different from his firebending, but… it wasn’t different, either. He closed his eyes and let the sensation build - the tension increase -
The breath he drew was charged -
His vision blurred -
He watched his hand draw a circle in front of himself -
Two fingers dragged a trail of sparks -
He pointed up through the rain -
Lightning stabbed up, into the night sky -
The air clapped back together in a roar that deafened him and knocked him down on his ass.
Rain soaked his face and started to run down (up?) his nose. He choked and coughed, rolling back over on his side, just the way he had been not even an hour ago.
Zolt’s hand clapped back down on his shoulder, and Mako felt himself being pulled up into a big bear hug.
"You did it! You really did it! I'm so proud of you!" Zolt shouted over the rain and thunder.
Mako pressed his face into Zolt’s shoulder, glad the rain would hide his tears.
“I miss you, Dad…”

Voices in the Night
Ikki couldn't sleep. The moon was too bright and there was a hummingbird moth that kept tap tap tapping at her window and her head was too full of thoughts. So up she went, using a cushion of air to glide down the hallways so her mother wouldn't hear her steps and be cross.
Once outside the moon was even brighter, like a big wheel of sky bison cheese. Ikki couldn't see the hummingbird moth though. What she did see was a butt. A butt with dangly legs hanging out of one of the open windows.
"Hello, Mr. Butt!" she chirped. There was a yelp and then a man tumbled out into the bush. When he stood he had sticks in his spiky brown hair. "Oh, hi Mako," she corrected.
"Shh!" Mako pressed his finger to his lips like a teacher. His face was all red and his shirt was unbuttoned. "I was only, um, looking for... yeah." Then he took off running across the grass.
"Bye Mako!" Ikki whispered, waving. He was funny. No wonder Korra liked him.
She turned and walked the other way around the residence. A lot of people had been staying on the island lately to help her dad with what to do after those scary Equalists and making a new council and stuff, so she wasn't surprised to see a flickering light on in one of the detached residences.
"I'd never leave you unsatisfied," said a low voice, followed by a wet sucking sound. "Until tomorrow then." The flickering light bounced a bit until it was outside, where it resolved into a tiny flame carried in the hand of a young man Ikki had known all her life.
"Hi, Iroh!" she called. "Can't sleep, too?"
Iroh jumped like someone had blown air up his pants. The flame in his hand winked out. When his eyes finally settled on her she saw him sag in apparent relief.
"What are you doing out of bed, munchkin?" he asked quietly, jogging over. "It's late."
"There was a moon and a hummingbird moth and Iroh, what are all those red smudges all over your mouth? Were you kissing? Oh it'd be so romantic! Who were you kissing, Iroh? Was it a princess? Are you gonna make her a princess? Where's your belt? Are---"
Iroh clapped a hand over her mouth and steered her back in the direction of the house. "I wasn't here," he whispered in her ear. "There's extra candy in it for you tomorrow if you can remember that."
"Mwhf frn nu---" Iroh released the hand over her mouth. "Okay, goodnight General Not Here, I like rock candy, the apple ones, and I hope it was good kissing and that you go home and have good dreams about your princess where you get married and I'm invited and you fly away on a dragon together into the sunset and have lots of babies."
Iroh rubbed at his mouth with the back of his hand, blushing. "Go to bed."
Ikki waved at his back and started back to the front door. The idea of candy made her remember there were leftover sweet buns in the kitchen which no one could tell her she couldn't have if they were asleep.
Suddenly a dark shape detached itself from the shadows of one of the far buildings. Ikki stopped in her tracks. There were no more Equalists, her father said, and no bad guys coming to get them. Still, something about the way this person moved screamed "bad guy" all the same. He wasn't walking so much as slinking. A slinky bad guy slinking away from who knew what badness.
Ikki opened herself and sent a jet of air at the man's back. He stumbled with a grunt and wheeled on her and he was old! Old like her daddy was old, with wrinkles and bushy eyebrows and a stripe of white down the middle of his gray hair like a skunk bear.
"What are you doing, kid?" he growled.
"We don't want any Equalists," Ikki said firmly, hands on her hips.
The big man's posture relaxed. Then, of all things, he laughed.
"Me, neither, kid," he said. "I hate those buggers."
Ikki snorted. Buggers. Like bugs. "So why are you slinking?"
"Visiting an old friend," he said. He rubbed at the corner of his mouth and smiled. "We're getting reacquainted. I like doing that on your island. It's fun for me. Do you know what irony is?"
Ikki did. "It's what auntie Lin bends."
A grin cracked across the man's craggy face. "She sure does bend alright," he said. Then he shook his head with a sharp laugh and started off in the direction of the ferry. Ikki wondered if he was going to meet Mako and Iroh for something. Maybe they were having a tea party.

-opens the door-
I love your stories so much, when I want some serotonin I come straight to your profile.
That said, I saw your comment asking for ideas (I think that's what it was, my understanding of English is bad) But I would pay (with drawings) for something by Linzolt, anything, school setting or complicated adults relating
And so 👉🏾👈🏾✨
Hello, yes welcome to my house. That is so sweet of you to say🫶🏼 this made my heart melt so I’m just going to give you some fluff. Deal with it🤷🏻♀️
Shrugging off her coat as soon as she entered her home, Lin took a big sigh of relief. She hung it over the rack by the door and stepped forward, letting her bending ease her metal boots off her feet.
Winter in Republic City had always been a setting to marvel at. The tourists brought a fresh perspective to the most mundane things, and despite the usual monotonous gloom winter brought, the city felt alive.
Even Lin Beifong found herself smiling in the nesting warmth of her home. Her metal suit slowly slid off of her as she turned towards the living, and the golden gleam of candle lights all across the house colored her vision.
She grabbed her sweater from the back of the couch and threw it on over her white tank top. She followed the aroma and made her way to the kitchen to find his back against her. She leaned against the door frame and admired the sight in front of her. He hadn't realized she was home, so she settled on watching him until he did.
"Are you planning on scaring me or do you just like staring at my ass?" He asked, a short few seconds later.
Lin chuckled slightly and sashayed over to the stove. With Zolt cooking, she was sure to have a lazy evening. "This curry drew me into the kitchen, not you or your ass."
Zolt leaned down to drop a kiss on her shoulder, forcing a little blush to her face. "But you're still having my smartass for dinner."
The strange thing with Lin was that she actually liked this silly domestic double life she was leading. At work, and for the rest of the world, she was Chief Tough-As-Nails Beifong, but at home, this man who seemingly adored every facet of her being called her mushy things like 'baby' and 'Linny'.
"I'll probably save your dumbass for dessert instead. I'm starving," she remarked, letting the warm, aromatic smoke soothe her sinuses.
"Skipped lunch again?"
Lin didn't bother answering, but feigned shame when she nodded in the affirmative.
"Baby," he said, kissing her temple while his eyes remained on the pot. "You know how I feel about that."
Lin curled herself under his arm and nuzzled into his embrace. With one hand on his chest, feeling at his heartbeat, she said, "I was only saving my appetite for dinner. I knew you'd be cooking."
"That's because you have trapped in here," he returned, squeezing her against him before resuming his attention to the stove. "You don't eat properly so I stay stuck in the kitchen, bribing you with tasty food in return for a healthy, well nourished partner."
Leading with her leg, Lin slid into the tiny space between Zolt and the stove and turned his attention to her face. Her head was pushed back, her gray locks only a short distance from dipping into his precious curry and Zolt had to wrap his arms around her back to pull her away. He pressed a kiss at the bottom of her ear and just as gingerly as he kissed her, he moved her away from the stove, kissing and nipping around her neck to bring her against the wooden dining table.
Lin had her arms wrapped around his shoulders and when she felt the edge of the table against her lower back, she pressed down on him to trying to lift herself up.
Abetting her request, Zolt picked her up a touch and placed her on the table. One hand ran under the two layers over her torso as he rubbed some heat into her body. "You don't need this sweater when you're with me."
"Maybe you should take it off for me then," she whispered.
Zolt was not one to argue. He ran both his hands up her waist, cupping her breasts before discarding her tank top and sweater on the floor. His mouth immediately found her neck, biting down until he left a mark. Lin whimpered softly, reeling in the pressure, her legs wrapped tightly around waist. Her body thrust against his, forcing a fiery breath out of his mouth. It almost would have burned if she wasn't so aroused.
He kissed her down her sternum, taking care to give each breast some attention before pushing her back to kiss her belly. Lin knew what was next, so she loosened pants and Zolt had pulled them off instantly.
“What’s that saying you have in the fire nation about eating dessert before your meal?”
Zolt chuckled against her mouth. “No such thing, you can have me whenever you want Chief.”
“Let’s turn that stove off and turn you on then?” She asked, a wicked grin on her face as she brought her hand to his crotch.
“Anything for you, my love.”

October 6: Spark + Not Realizing They're Injured
Just a really short Linzolt oneshot for @orangepanic's Whumptloktober! This one is loosely connected to The Investigations of Officer Beifong.
As she crouched in the narrow Dragon Flats alley, ducked behind the dumpster lid she’d bent into a makeshift shield, Lin Beifong realized that she had made several critical miscalculations.
The first was the assumption that she’d been dealing with a nonbender. The cut and dry stabbing murders in the Flats and Roku Plaza had led her to rule out any elemental involvement, but the dozens upon dozens of daggers currently flying towards her clearly proved that to be false. The second was that this killer was working alone, which was proven undeniably false by the water tentacles attempting to reach behind her barricade. The last, and perhaps the most damning, was the notion that she didn’t need backup. Not that she could have requested it anyway, since she was working this case off the books.
Realistically speaking, she was moderately screwed at a minimum. But at least she had managed to let the killers’ latest target get away. She was just contemplating how she would word all this in a report without getting herself fired when a familiar spark of blue-white lightning illuminated the dark alleyway.
A pained scream and a strong smell of ozone filled the air as the waterbender’s attack ceased. Taking advantage of the momentum, Lin tossed aside the dumpster lid and after a moments' strain, took control of the daggers flying towards her and reversed their trajectory. The metalbender cried out as the blades nicked him and the pavement rose up to bind his legs in concrete.
After binding the metalbender’s wrists in standard issue platinum cuffs, she turned to Zolt who was ever irreverently stepping over the waterbender’s body on his way to over her.
Lin scowled at him. “That guy better not be dead or I swear—”
“Relax, Linny. He’s just sleeping,” he said, smirking. “You know, you could have said something if you were gonna go after your killer.”
Lin crossed her arms over her chest. “Why should I inform a common criminal about police business?”
“Hey—criminal I’ll give you, baby, but I object to common.”
“And I object to you being here,” Lin replied. “Seriously, I have to call this into headquarters, and you can’t be on the scene when these guys get picked up.”
“Let’s get out of here then,” he said. “We need to get you patched up, anyway.”
Lin raised an eyebrow. “What are you—”
“Linny, you’re bleeding,” he said, gesturing to a growing patch of blood seeping through her gray uniform jacket.
Lin glanced down for a moment, before shrugging the matter off. “It’s probably just a scratch,” she said. “I’ve had worse.”
“I’m not taking any chances.” Zolt then scooped her up into his arms and started carrying her out of the alleyway.
“This is entirely unnecessary,” Lin grumbled, even as the smoke and bergamot scent of him lulled her into a reluctant calm. “And there will be consequences.”
“I will face them happily when you’re not trailing blood all over the Flats,” he said. “Now does that healer friend of yours still live on Port Street?”
Lin merely sighed when she imagined the teasing Kya would subject her to after this man carried her bridal style into her apartment. “We’re only going so I can call headquarters from her phone.”
“Whatever you say, Linny.” Zolt leaned down to kiss the top of her head. “Now press on your side before you bleed out.”

I kinda wanna hear more about lin and zolt's relationship in the modern au. What happened between them?
Tbh @peachchanvidel is the major brains behind this, but this is what we've brainstormed together:
Lin and Zolt dated in high school and broke up maybe in their early 20s. I won't spoil how they got together bc I will reveal that in the next chapter (I think)
When they first started dating, Lin was not in a good space mentally because there was a lot of family drama involving learning about her dad and his family. Zolt was a pretty chill guy in high school so he and Lin got along
When Zolt's career as a boxer began to build up and Lin was in college, this is where the differences began to show up.
Zolt is much more conservative and wants to be the macho provider for Lin. He didn't want her to work as a teacher or at all. He wanted to provide and make her stay-at-home gf/wife. When Lin talked about her own career ambitions and what she wanted in life, they'd get into arguments bc Zolt was like 'you don't need to work!!!"
Lin wants to work because she wants something for herself, and also, so she can provide and take care of her family
Zolt has no interest in caring for Lin's family. He's very individualistic and only would care for Lin and potential future children they could have. His indifference to Poppy's health and her wandering is sort of the final nail in the coffin for Lin to end the relationship
Zolt is still not over her. He acts like he is
That's pretty much their relationship in a nutshell. Both wanted different things and also have different views on what they wanted their future to look like + personal values

So Lin has lost the trial against Tenzin, she was tried for her attack on the temple and for her abuse of power against Pema, and has been sanctioned by indefinitely removing him from his position.
She has been left with nothing, no home to return to, no family to turn to, no job to take refuge in... In the end, she does nothing but drink and seek death at the hands of the only person she has left.
Or
Zolt sees the love of his life return to his arms once again.

One Day More
#FFF304 One Day More
Avatar: the Legend of Korra
466 words
Lin stood in her living room, reviewing her choices.
The low table in front of the couch would give her the most room, but the contents of the small box and the tools in her kit didn’t need that much. And sitting on the floor at her age didn’t feel as relaxing as it once had.
Her kitchen table had the benefit of the right height, but the lighting wouldn’t be good until much later in the day. With a scoff, she set the items down in favor of pulling a glass from the cabinet and filling it with water while she considered her plan.
The light breeze passing through the window smelled like spring.
She hadn’t made note of the date, but with a moment’s thought, realized it had been close to a year since she had entered Tan’s Dry Goods for the first time.
She had spent a year getting to know him, Yu Jin, Eboshi… even herself.
The ghost of his hand on her upper arm and a kiss on the back of her shoulder sent a thrill up her spine, fanning out across her back and back down her arms.
Tomorrow, she thought. After dinner.
The dress and matching shoes were carefully stored in her closet, placed with the same acerbic oversight from Eboshi that Lin recalled from their first encounter nearly ten years before. The shoes were covered, the dress sheltered by a drape, their striking colors hidden from view.
The weather was still a little unpredictable, so Eboshi had made sure to have her favorite black trench coat cleaned and ready.
She closed her eyes and shook her head.
Her ex-girlfriend was helping her get ready for a date with a man with a criminal history.
Life could be so strange sometimes.
Before she mined that vein of thought any further, she picked up her items and walked over to the balcony.
That she never had started locking.
Su’s extra chair was still sitting in the far corner, so she unrolled her stone-shaping tools and set them within easy reach of her preferred chair.
Once settled, she opened the small, white nephrite jar, and gently removed the stone nestled inside.
It was nearly done, and she had all day to finish the details and polishing, and attach the pin that would allow Tan to wear it, should he choose to.
Her fingertip felt the contours her tools had already carved. Her chi flowed through the roughnesses that still needed to be refined. The design sharpened and clarified under her intense focus.
It was almost ready.
She was almost ready -
Ready to see him again.
Ready to hear him out.
Ready to open up in ways she thought she had given up on.
One day more, and she would be ready.

For the Touches ask game 13. Linking hands during sex please
Surprisingly, this was the only ask I received in regards to this series of prompts. Thanks for indulging me :)
I might have been listening to Bed Chem while writing this- just so you know what to expect👀
He had never seen Lin so still- she was calm, composed and grounded in peace, she was rarely known to experience. He lowered himself on top of her and planted a soft kiss under her ear.
"You're awfully gentle tonight."
When he pushed himself up, he looked into those lustful green eyes. For a woman who scarcely smiled, her playful smirk was truly something to marvel at.
"I want to enjoy you enjoying me," Zolt replied, kissing her neck this time.
Lin's arms wrapped around his shoulders and pulled him back on her body. "Someone's full of themselves."
Zolt chuckled. "At least one of us should be full of me."
"You're disgusting, you know that?"
"You're disgusting," he countered. "I meant that as- you know, you being hungry for me- like you're never going to be full of me because you can't have enough of- Lin!"
She laughed heartily, knowing that her fingers running up and down his torso was throwing him off. "You're so flustered today!"
"It's your fault," he mumbled.
His grumbles died against her lips when she kissed him. Her body was writhing under his- he wanted to spend more time on it too- if only her face wasn't so captivating.
"So, are we going to..." she began, raising an innocuous eyebrow suggestively.
"Well, I didn't get you naked for nothing, did I?"
Forgoing her distracting lips, and eyes, and sharp tongue, Zolt positioned himself to enter her. She closed her eyes, and he realized that there was no feeling, sexual or otherwise, that he would shut his eyes to experience if it meant missing the look on her face.
Lin moaned as she guided his lips down to her neck.
"I have a... request," he grunted out.
Lin's eyes widened- her face contorted to her no-nonsense visage and deadpanned, "You're not putting it in my ass."
Zolt huffed out a laugh. "I want to hold your hand."
She looked confused and surprised, but obliged anyway, awkwardly waving and surrendering her hand in front of him.
He laughed again as their fingers entwined. Zolt lowered his head and kissed her cheek. "Thanks, love."
Love? Since when was she love? Lin was known to tolerate baby from time to time or go by Linny despite her many protests, but love? Never.
He squeezed her hand to pull her out of her thoughts. Ever the dominant, Zolt had found a new way to control her. He kissed her cheek softly before trailing down her neck and continued thrusting into her. Lin easily gave in and enjoyed herself instead of worrying about semantics.
Later that night, Lin awoke to a parched mouth. Zolt's arm weighed her down in the mattress- making her all the more cozy and unwilling to quench her thirst. Besides, she knew if she so much as even stirred for something like water, Zolt would probably bring the whole ocean into this little hotel room.
So she lay there, thinking about about labels and what it was about linking hands together that overturned their routine fucking to making love. How they went from making out before a delicate first kiss, or sleeping together in the same bed until dawn before ever going out on a date to a fancy restaurant.
This backslide was new, but very welcome.
A few minutes later, Zolt let out a slight snore, and shifted in his sleep. He pulled her closer to his body, and Lin gladly went with the motion, resting her head on his shoulder. Shuffling under the blanket, Lin felt around for his hand and grabbed it.
When she thought about what it really meant, she decided she'd play it off as some kind of fetish.
