It's funny how clearly uninformed a lot of criticism of Mozilla and its browser Firefox is. Like people say "it's just another corporation, out to make profit, just like Google." And that ordinary users promoting Firefox are just giving them free advertising.

It's in basically any post criticizing Mozilla, including on this site. Like using tumblr search I quickly found a post that was largely positive, but argued that Mozilla operates "under capitalist incentives" And outside tumblr I found a blog post out on the interwebs that criticized Mozilla and outright wondered "I don't know if Mozilla's business model ever made sense, it makes a lot more sense if it's something closer to a nonprofit rather than a commercial entity."

Well, let's research the Mozilla Corporation, see what that business model actually is. Let's begin that research by going to the wikipedia article, and read the two introductory paragraphs. And it turns out that it's "a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation", which is a non-profit.

"The Mozilla Foundation will ultimately control the activities of the Mozilla Corporation and will retain its 100 percent ownership of the new subsidiary. Any profits made by the Mozilla Corporation will be invested back into the Mozilla project. There will be no shareholders, no stock options will be issued and no dividends will be paid. The Mozilla Corporation will not be floating on the stock market and it will be impossible for any company to take over or buy a stake in the subsidiary."

Turns out that it is not just "closer to a non-profit", it is literally a non-profit. Turns out you only needed two paragraphs on wikipedia to learn that, the most basic online research possible, which basically every post I found criticizing Mozilla failed to do.

This is entirely different from any other entity calling itself corporation, which is all about creating profit or money for its shareholders, the "capitalist incentives" spoken about earlier.

If you read further into that article, you will learn that the Mozilla corporation literally only exists separate from the foundation for tax and legal purposes, but it's still a non-profit operation.

This makes it reasonably immune from the enshittification process I've written about before. there is no incentive to fuck over the experience for end users for the sake of shareholder profits, like what tumblr is doing right now.

It means that Firefox is an exemption to the rule that "if something is free, you are the product", because there is no product to produce profits for shareholders, it's a charitable endeavour for a free and open internet, as laid out in the Mozilla manifesto.

This doesn't mean non-profits make corruption impossible, there is plenty of corruption in non-profit foundations. But unlike actual capitalist corporations, it doesn't have the greed and corruption built in. And if you are going to criticize Mozilla and Firefox, which it does sometimes deserve, you should have your basic facts straight before doing so, if you expect me to take you seriously.

i have a personal problem with this kind of attitude. it's not a petty thing i am unreasonably angry about. there is a politics of translation and it affects one's understanding of art and popular culture/cultural geopolitics.

yes, tbhx has an unprecedented world wide release for a donghua/Chinese media and it's vital for its popularity, especially among transnational fandom spaces. Transcreated works are important for easier access. BUT, my gripe with the Japanese dub of a Chinese media WILL never be resolved. I am not talking about the quality, the issue lies in the very creation of the Japanese dub of a donghua itself. Let me give you an example.

Last year, we had an optional course called translation studies and one of the first things our professor asked was : who are the writers of A Doll's House and Waiting for Godot? He told those few of us who had read these texts closely to shut our mouth and let others take a guess. Most people answered : British writers. The texts are English texts. Because it's so famous among literature enthusiasts and when a piece of literature has a 'classic' tag attached to it, we tend to generalize and oversimplify it. So, a Norwegian playwright's original Norwegian play or an Irish playwright's play originally written in French- both get labelled as British literature. Get my point?

The anime industry is justifiably dominated by Japanese productions but when we forget to accommodate the nuances, the origin culture decays. It is, in many senses, a form of subtle cultural imperialism brought by ignorance.

People complain about Link Click's 'poor marketing' but I think Haolin was clever doing so. Even in the reviews by Indian anime bros™ I see them trying to pronounce 'donghua'. People RECOGNIZE that Link Click is a Chinese media, it's NOT an anime. You may laugh at those link click related youtube video titles saying stuff like : China is taking over anime, this Chinese anime is better than your favourite anime, PEAK Chinese anime, the best anime of 2021 is NOT Japanese?!, Link Click is taking over anime, China's hidden gem, China might have created the best anime of the year- CHINA IS IMPORTANT.

Whenever people talk about Chinese donghua- Link Click, Heaven Official's Blessing, Master of Diabolism etc are mentioned and people KNOW that it looks like anime but not really anime. It's... something... something else. This distinction is critical and essential.

Now, thanks to censorship (the Chinese version is not available on any official platform), many people think (not all people dig that deep while watching things, like come on) Spiritpact is a JAPANESE anime. Who the heck is Tanmouki or whatever. They are are Duanmu Xi and Yang Jinghua.

if you GENUINELY think that casting Hunter Schafer as Zelda WHEN SHE LOOKS LIKE THE ZELDA is an issue GTFO. Like holy shit how is it that trans people, more specifically TRANS WOMEN being in the media is such an issue in the big '25?

Out of all the series you could've possibly bitched about, you chose the one series where gender is a VERY unspecified concept, where literally ANYONE can present in a masculine or feminine way and not a SINGLE citizen gives a flying fuck.

I mean FFS, the main character is THE DEFINITION of gender-neutral/I'm-going-to-present-how-I-want. If you're going to bitch about live adaptations for video games, do it for concern of not following canon, or messing up a pivotal scene, not for what's in an actor/actress' pants.

Sydney Sweeney looks absolutely NOTHING like Zelda unless you are basing that upon skin colour and somewhat her hair colour (but not really).

And I know the point isn't even really about Sidney Sweeny being cast, it's about people STILL being uncomfortable with trans people and trans women in media space which is disgusting within itself and honestly a bit puzzling considering women of all kinds weren't allowed to act whatsoever for a VERY long time and were played by men, but to hell with that I guess.

A whole bunch of people need to wake up real quick, because the fact that there is still an issue with queer people being represented and present in media in any way, shape, or form is disgusting. We should be able to be out and proud of who we are without risking ridicule, violence, and hate from the general public. This debate is so out-dated and pointless because queer people have always existed, no matter if they were out or not.

Hunter Schaffer is a woman. And if you don't want to acknowledge that, then so be it. She looks like the splitting image of Zelda (more specifically Twilight Princess) and she is arguably the closest person they'll get for casting if they're going for that rendition of Zelda.

The LoZ series has always been somewhat subtly pro-LGBTQ. You chose the absolute wrong fandom to try and complain about casting a queer actor (gender neutral term pls don't come after me) when a fair amount of characters present both fem and masc either in their canon designs or with customized outfits (like BOTW or Echoes of Wisdom).

Please be a cis/het prick in another fandom space. Fuck you.

No because Dorian becoming Archon of Tevinter should have given us at least SOME inner conflict on his part when it comes to achieving that status since it’s what his father ultimately wanted him to be in the first place when he was younger. Like there’s so many aspects about him reaching that position that should have put into question a lot of things about his personal journey and Veilguard does absolutely NOTHING with it.

I mean, you can choose who’s the ruler of Fereldan in Origins as well as who’s the new Divine in Inquistion and I feel like both of those choices give an appropriate amount of characterization and inner conflict with the people involved. We get a proper look at how whoever is elected truly feels about their position, like an unhardened Alistair feeling very unconfident about being king and is even willing to break up with a non-Cousland Warden for the sake of his country. I guess this is part of a bigger issue with Veilguard in general and how it just seems so uninterested in tackling the bigger picture when it comes to politics within Thedas, and by extension how people truly feel about reaching these positions of power.

Like I’m sorry, but I just needed a lot more from Dorian than just “Oh, I’m going to be Archon? Excellent! I’m a little nervous about it but I’m sure I’ll get the job done!”.

PAY YOUR FUCKING ARTISTS.

I was interviewed for a position over the weekend for my college newspaper to be a comic artist - they would have had me do a 6-panel comic every single week + plus a "trial run" comic, and we got all the way up until the end before they said, "Also, you are aware this is not a paid position, right?"

Which was not stated at all on the flyer or the application.

I have no job, struggling financially, and am looking everywhere for a job. I cannot live on exposure or the promise of networking, especially considering I'm a full-time student. And to make me produce content every single week with my school schedule and not pay me on top of that? To all my fellow artists out there, please don't fall for shit like this. Your artwork is worth more than that, and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

If they cannot pay for your labor, they do not deserve your labor. Do not let yourself be taken advantage of. If you would like to support me and my artwork, my Ko-Fi is pinned or right here. Watching all these social media platforms spiraling into disgust, I really think we need to consider alternatives. And I’m not really talking about finding different social media platforms, either, but rather changing the way we engage with and reach the content we want to see online.

As things stand now, we’re really just being corralled into ad-revenue pens at our own expense (i.e. being forced to see toxic content that’s terrible for our mental health but great for their engagement). It’s not for our benefit. It’s for theirs. In fact, we often get punished by their algorithms because we don’t post at their pace or share the kind of content they want.

But we’re stuck because we don’t feel like we have any other options, right? Because that’s the only way we can reach people and share our creations, right? To be honest, I’d rather subscribe to newsletters and visit personal blogs or websites. I’d rather pay modest, reasonable amounts to access a creator’s work than force them to rely on ad revenue from the more ravenous. But I don’t think we’re ready for that as a whole…
