OK, Curie and Piper might be the virtual girlfriends any guy would want - but when Fallout 4 actually rewards you for just hanging out with the dog (more carry capacity, more damage), there really is no contest here. Especially when he decides to play with his teddy bear in the middle of an irradiated battle zone before helping you take down a super mutant.

Considering you find Dogmeat randomly hanging about all on his own, my headcanon is that he's a descendant of The Littlest Hobo. He might even be the Littlest Hobo considering he's able to be in two places at the same time (Boston in Fallout 4, the LA area in the Fallout TV series which is canon to the games).
