My Silly Midgardian
꒰ა ˚₊ ✧・┈﹕Loki masterlist ꒰ ᐢ。- ༝ -。ᐢ ꒱ Navigation ﹕┈・𐑺 ‧₊˚໒꒱
Please note that this story is a repost from my old blog @lucywrites02.
Summary: Loki’s friend/crush has the flu. Loki having no knowledge about midgardian diseases panics and tries his best to make her feel better.
Word count: 2.2k
Tumblr media
You knew something was wrong the moment you’ve woken up. Trying to stretch your muscles a little bit you noticed how sore your body was. At first you blamed it on the training session you had with Natasha yesterday but realisation hit you as you started coughing uncontrollably. You felt incredibly warm. Way too warm for your liking. You looked at your face in the mirror and noticed the bags under your eyes. You groaned in frustration. A fracking flu? You were one of the best agents S.H.I.E.L.D had to offer. You have been working alongside THE Avengers for more than 2 years now, fighting aliens and terrorists and yet a simple flu defeated you.
You splashed some water on your face and put your most comfortable clothes on. It was going to be a really long day after all. You wanted to crawl back under the covers but your tummy demanded breakfast. You weren't sure if food was what you needed right now. You didn’t want to upset your stomach after all but you also needed to eat something. After some thinking you decided on some plain toast and a cup of tea.
Walking into the kitchen you noticed Loki sitting at the table with a book in his hand. It was one of many you let him borrow to “become more familiar with midgardian culture”. He truly enjoyed some of them but would never admit that. You have seen him reading your favourite book more than once but decided to not make any comments about that. Upon noticing your arrival Loki put his book away and greeted you with a warm smile.
“Good morning!” he said happily “How is my favourite midgardian doing!”
“She’s doing just fine, thank you,” you responded and pulled two slices of bread out of the bag.
“I was wondering when you’ll wake up,” the god announced “I made you some tea, it’s still warm.” Your heart skipped a bit when he said he was waiting for you. The two of you talk about books Loki has read every morning and discuss them together. Loki didn’t want to tell you he had already read most of the books you have given him before in fear you would stop talking with him altogether. He was utterly smitten with you but he knew a woman like you would never be interested in him romantically. Several people had mistaken you two for a couple before and every time that happened you would immediately correct them and say you were just friends. The idea of you reciprocating his feelings sounded unrealistic to him. If he only knew you felt the same….
You gave him a tired smile and thanked for the tea. As the bread popped out the toaster you put it on your plate and sat down next to Loki.
“I think there are some pancakes in the microwave if you want,” Loki stood up, wanting to give you some. “Romanoff made them before they head out.”
“Oh, no thank you! I’ll stick to the toasts today,” you reassured him and took a small bite of your food. “By the way where is everyone?” you asked upon noticing how quiet it was in the tower this morning. You knew Nat and Clint had a mission in Alaska because the redhead told you that during your training but you had no idea what happened with the rest of the team.
“Thor left with Natasha and Barton, “ he explained” Tony is in Paris with Pepper. Captain and his squad are on a mission in Australia and Wanda joined them”
“So it’s just the two of us in here?”
“Banner is in his lab doing whatever he thinks will help him pass the time” Loki added
You winced in pain as you felt a throbbing in your head. You felt as if you took part in a marathon. Your muscles were aching and you were slightly dehydrated. Loki noticed your discomfort and turned to face you.
“Are you ok?” he asked, concerned. The trickster only now noticed the bags under your eyes. He touched your hand and got even more worried when he felt how warm you were.
“I’m great, Loki,” you announced and drank the rest of your tea.
“I’m not an expert but midgardians shouldn’t be so warm and-”
“Really, Loki I’m fine!” you said.
“You are not looking that fine to me.” he responded.
“Wow, rude. Not everyone can just wake up and look like a cover girl.” you tried to laugh but the constant throbbing in your head wouldn’t allow it. You stood up wanting to put your empty mug in the dishwasher. As you did that your vision went blank and the only sound you heard before passing out was the mug shattering on the floor
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You opened your eyes and yawned loudly. You were laying down on the couch with a warm blanket over your body. You tried to sit up but your muscles were too sore to allow any movement. Realising how drenched in sweat your clothes were you groaned.  You started to wonder how you got there when you noticed Loki with a glass of water and a sandwich.
“Norns! You are finally awake,” he said and put them down on the small coffee table. Loki quickly walked to you and kneeled. His hand gently touched your forehead and tucked your hair behind your ear. “You fainted, darling,” he announced and started stocking your cheek.
“Tell me what’s wrong.”
“It’s really nothing bad, Loki,” you tried to reassure him but the god didn’t believe you. You wanted to explain to him that it was just a flu but you started coughing uncontrollably which made the trickster panic even more. He helped you sit up and gently caressed your back.
“I’m calling Banner,” Loki said but you stopped him before he could do anything else.
“Seriously, Loki, I will be fine.” you hugged the covers even tighter to your body that was already drenched in sweat. “It’s just a flu.” Loki looked at you as if you were crazy.
“Just a-.... Y/N, you fainted!” you knew Loki cared for you but now he was definitely overreacting. “If I didn’t catch you you would hurt yourself!” you noticed the worry in his eyes. It looked like he was on the verge of tears but you blamed your brain for sending you such images. You felt something weird in your stomach and quickly kicked the blanket off of you. You stood up and ran out of the living room, Loki was right behind you. You opened the door to the bathroom. When the trickster entered the room you were  kneeling on the cold tales as you emptied your stomach.
“Hey, it’s ok, everything’s all right,” Loki held your hair in right hand while his left one was on your back. “JARVIS! Call Banner and tell him to immediately come to my room!” you would argue with him but you didn’t have any energy left. “Can you stand up?” you nodded and flushed the toilet. Trying to take a step forward you winced in pain because your muscles were still too sore.
Seeing your struggle Loki picked you up in wedding style and carried you to his room. You tried to protest but didn’t have the energy to do so. Instead you put your hands around his neck as your head rested on his shoulder. As he walked into the elevator and pushed the bottom to his floor he felt you shiver and hugged you closer to his body. Loki had no idea what was happening to you. Was it something you caught during the last mission? Is it deadly? Will you be ok? He was seriously panicking now but as long as he was able to feel your breathing on his neck it was ok.
“You’re going to be ok, my love” he whispered, gently kissing your head.
The elevator stopped and Loki quickly walked into the direction of  his room. He opened the door and carefully laid you on his bed.
“Bruce should be here soon,” Loki announced “Is there something you need? Water? Something to eat? Another blanket? “ if you weren’t feeling like shit at that moment you would kiss for the way he was acting  “Or maybe not, you are already too warm, another blanket would just make it worse.” Loki was mumbling to himself and  it wasn the most adorable thing you have ever seen.
“One blanket would be just fine” you smiled at him softly “But if you could bring me some clean clothes I would be grateful. Those are drenched in sweat,” you asked shily, suddenly feeling embarrassed.
“Of course! That’s no problem” he replied quickly and opened his closet. “Do you need some pants or just a shirt?”
“Pants, too, please” you were sleepy again and ready to drift off any moment now “I mean, if it’s not a problem. I promise I will wash them afterwards”  A few seconds later Loki came back with a pair of black sweatpants and a green sweater.
“The pants are too big for you but I hope that won’t be a problem,” he gave them to you with a soft smile. You tried to stand up and go to the bathroom but winced in pain again. Loki must have figured out what was wrong and insisted that you stay in the bed. He said he would go to the bathroom and give you some privacy and that you should tell him when you’re decent again.
“Such a gentleman,” you joked
“Everything for you, my lady” he winked at you and left to the bathroom
This man will be the death of you sooner or later.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After you put the clothes on you awkwardly called for him. Loki came back and ogled your body. You were significantly smaller than him but now that you were wearing his, way too big, clothes you look tiny. The god thought you looked adorable wearing his clothes, especially if they were green. He blushed when he realised what he was thinking about. The two of you were still looking at each other in silence until a knock on the door pulled you both out of that trance. Loki opened them and pulled Bruce inside.
“What took you so long???” Loki asked, irritated. You wanted to greet Bruce but because your eyes were closing involuntary you decided to rest for a while.
“I was at the store!” Banner defended himself “I just came back and then JARVIS told me you wanted me to come ASAP” Normally the trickster would argue with him more but you were his number one priority right now. The scientist asked what was so important and Loki pointed at your exhausted body laying on his bed and explained what happened.
“So let me get this straight,” Bruce said confused “You panicked and called ME because she’s sick”
“Yes! You are a doctor, you should help her!” Loki was getting more anxious with every passing second.
“I have some PHDs but that’s not the same” Banner explained
“But you are a midgardian, right?” the god continued “You know what’s happening to her so please help her!” the trickster begged. The scientist was taken aback by his words. It wasn’t a secret that Loki had feelings for you. Everyone in the tower could see it. Except you, of course. But no one would ever expect Loki to beg someone for help. You really meant a lot to him.
“Ok, I see what I can do” Banned patted his shoulder and headed towards you. He gently shook your body and you woke up again. “I heard you weren’t feeling well” you nodded your head as your friend touched your forehead.  “You have an awful fever. Loki, could you bring me a wet towel, please?” Bruce didn’t even blink and Loki was already in the bathroom. The scientist turned to you again “Do you need some pills? I have some painkillers in my room if you want”  you nodded and gave him a grateful smile. Loki came back with a wet towel and handed it to Banner. He then put it on your forehead and stood up. “I’m going to my room to get her some medicine. Give her some water and keep an eye on her. I will be right back”
And with that Bruce left the room.
Loki sat at the edge of the bed right next to you and gently caressed your cheek. You put your hand on top of his and smiled. Loki’s heart was beating like crazy now. Did you have feelings for him or was it just because you were ill? He wished it was the first one. He could keep staring at your beautiful face for eternity if you allowed him.
A few moments later Bruce came back with the painkiller he promised you. Loki handed you a glass of water and you swallowed the pill.
“If you need anything else just call me” Banner said to Loki “Get better soon, Y/N!” you waved at him and the scientist was gone again.
“Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?” the god asked
“Could you read something for me?” you hugged the pillow and moved closer to him “Please?” you added
“Anything for you, my love” he took a book from his nightstand and leaned on the wall. You raised the blanket silently inviting him to lay with you. The gesture made Loki’s heart flutter. He got under the covers, one hand was holding the book and another one was hugging you close to his body, You took the wet towel off of your head and threw it on the floor where your old clothes were. You put your head on his chest and listened to his heart beat. You noticed it was faster than it’s supposed to be but asked no questions. Asgardians were different from humans, right? You closed your eyes as Loki was reading but didn’t feel like sleeping anymore. You could listen to his voice forever.
The trickster was a few chapters in when he noticed your closed eyes. Assuming you were asleep he closed the book and put it away. He decided that watching you was far more interesting than any story he could read. Not hearing his voice anymore you opened your eyes to check on him. Your eyes met with his and you could have sworn he was blushing. You smiled and he did the same. It was now or never, Loki thought. He leaned in slowly and rested his hands on your waist. You figured out what he was planning and you pushed his lips away with your index finger.
“I must have misunderstood the situation” Loki took his hand off your waist and awkwardly cleaned his throat. He looked hurt, heartbroken even “Please forgive me”
“No Loki, it’s-” you started “you didn’t misunderstand anything. I’m sick and I don’t want YOU to be sick, too” you explained and gently stroked his cheek.
“My silly midgardian,” Loki laughed and hugged you “I’m immune to your diseases so even if I wanted to, I couldn’t get sick”
“Well, if that’s the case-” you grinned and put your lips on his. Loki didn’t waste any more time and immediately reciprocated the kiss which quickly went from soft and gentle to passionate and rough
“That was way better than I have imagined” Loki whispered after you two broke the kiss to be able to breathe again.
“What else did you imagine?” you gave him one more kiss and laid your head in the crook of his neck.
“I imagined going on a date with you” he interfered  his fingers with yours and continued “I imagined us holding hands whilst walking together. I imagined us falling asleep and then waking up together”  you kissed his neck and looked into his eyes.
“I’m feeling sleepy again so your last dream will probably come true” you said, smirking
“In my imagination we have fallen asleep after doing something different than reading but I guess this is ok, too” he added and you playfully smacked his chest. He laid on his side to be face to face with you and put one of your legs around his waist. You put your hands around his body and hummed in satisfaction. “You, my love, are the most beautiful and mesmerizing woman I have ever met” he kissed your head one more time and you both drifted off to sleep.

Free Fall
Summary: Tony Stark arranges for an Avengers Teambuilding Day at a local amusement park. Loki had been hoping to avoid it -- he's had enough thrills to last a lifetime, he has no desire to seek out more -- but you and your endearing enthusiasm for roller coasters convince him to come along. However, the free fall drop tower you start out with turns out to be a bit more thrilling than he bargained for.
Word Count: 3,482
Pairing: Loki x Gender Neutral Reader
Tumblr media
A/N: Drags self out of the grave and awkwardly waves
So it's been a minute since I posted lol. Those of you who follow may be aware that I recently graduated from college with the Final Semester From Hell that involved my computer hard drive dying on me in class and causing me to lose not only forty pages of my honors thesis two weeks before it was due, but also almost every WIP I had been working on in the past four years because I am an idiot who chronically forgets to back things up :D I did make it through college, but between stress, burnout, depression, and the death of any motivation to work on anything because of having to restart from the beginning for all of my projects, I went a while without writing anything. But I'm slowly getting back into it -- I have several projects in the works and I'm hoping to get back to posting more regularly. This fic was a short piece that I had started prior to the computer death that I had a lot of physical notes on so they weren't lost when my hard drive decided to yeet itself into the sun. I'm not entirely happy with it, but honestly it feels so good to finally finish something that I don't care.
Anyways, sorry for the obnoxious A/N. Thank you so much for reading!
Warnings: PTSD, flashbacks, panic attack, a bit of motion sickness?

Standing in the shadow of the great tower, heart thudding in his throat, Loki is suddenly aware that he’s made an enormous mistake.
Next to him, Stark whistles. “This is what you usually start with?”
You grin up at the spire, a massive construction of electric green cutting through the cloudless sky. Two elevators, one on either side, are creeping slowly up the length of the tower. They linger at the top for just a moment before plunging back down to Earth, their occupants screaming. Loki feels ill just watching, but you’re practically vibrating in place. “It’s good to get the blood pumping.”
He can’t bring himself to look at you.
It’s your fault that he’s here. Loki hadn’t planned to come today at all. A day spent outside in the sweltering summer sun, following Stark’s gaggle of misfits onto various machines designed to fling mortals from side to side to simulate the feeling of a near death experience? Loki couldn’t imagine anything more torturous. Thor’s begging and cajoling received nothing in response. No, he hadn’t the slightest intention of coming today, not until last night, when he came across you restocking the main refrigerator.
“Are you excited for tomorrow?” you had asked as you arranged rows of Red Bull on the top shelf. “I can’t wait to take you guys around Rapid Rails—I’ve been begging Mr. Stark to do a teambuilding day there ever since he hired me.”
Your eagerness caught him off guard— as Stark’s personal assistant, you had been present at all of his godforsaken teambuilding events, but Loki had never known you to be particularly excited about any of them. “I … I wasn’t aware you had such an attachment to it.”
“Oh yeah—I grew up just down the street from there!” You beamed at him, breaking down the cardboard box you had used to carry the cans. “We used to have season passes – they were way cheaper when I was a kid – and we’d just go there to hang out all the time. Gosh it was so fun. And now I get to go for work!” You let out a merry laugh. “I guess some things never change, right?”
Loki huffed a soft chuckle. He had never seen you like this before, practically bubbling over in excitement. It was … rather endearing. “I suppose not.”
“You are coming, right? Thor said you hadn’t made up your mind yet.”
Were the circumstances different, Loki might have scoffed. Hadn’t made up your mind yet—Norns, his brother lived in denial. Instead though, he hesitated. “I … I’m afraid I hadn’t planned on it.”
“Really?” The way your face fell actually hurt his chest. “Why not?”
“I—” He glanced away, pressing his lips together. “I’m not sure I’m one for your roller coasters,” he said, finally. “You’d likely have a better time without me there.” It was an attempt at lightheartedness, but you only seemed more disappointed.
“Oh, that’s not true at all! I was really looking forward to—” you stopped suddenly, and when Loki looked up again, you were biting your lip with a nervous laugh. “I mean, it would be really fun if you came with us. But it’s okay if you don’t want to.”
“I suppose I could come, if you so desire.” He hoped he sounded nonchalantly cool, and that you couldn’t see the way his heart fluttered at the idea that you might want him there. “I wouldn’t wish to let you down.”
“Oh, I mean—” You looked away, the light from the refrigerator silhouetting your frame. “I don’t want to force you, if you don’t want to. You shouldn’t do it just for me.”
“No, I …” He inhaled, then smiled. “I think I would like to join you.”
And so here he is, at the base of this great metal monstrosity, intently studying the sign outside of the line entrance to avoid Thor’s knowing smirk. His brother has never worn self-satisfaction well.
DEATH DROP: THE TALLEST AND FASTEST DROP TOWER ON THE EAST COAST
The description is illustrated with a photograph of two people strapped to their seats, mouths wide in mid-scream as their hair flies every which way. Loki lets out a shaky exhale as he reads. The tower, it claims, is 400 feet tall. It reaches top speeds of 85 miles per hour. The ride itself lasts about 90 seconds in total. The measuring stand besides the entrance indicates that participants must be at least 48 inches tall.
400 feet. That doesn’t sound too terrible, he tells himself. The concept of a foot as a unit of measurement is still something he struggles to wrap his head around, but he knows that Stark Tower stands at over a thousand. So that’s not too bad. 400 feet would be a drop in the bucket, really, compared to …
No. He pushes the thought down, back into the dark recesses of his memory. None of that. Not today.
Stark smirks at him. “You’re looking green, Tommy Wiseau.”
Loki swallows, straining to maintain his stiff mask of composure. It’s bad enough to have Stark reveling in his discomfort, but now you’re looking over at him too, brow furrowed in concern, and he wishes he could melt away on the spot. “I’m quite fine.”
“Of course he is!” Thor booms, slapping his shoulder with a hearty thwack that does nothing for Loki’s stomach. “We’ve fallen from much higher heights, haven’t we, brother?”
Weightless. Breathless. Engulfed by inky nothingness, the air so thin he can’t even scream —
Loki’s smile hurts. “Yes, very true.”
“You don’t have to go, Loki,” you interject. “It’s totally okay— I have friends who love roller coasters and refuse to touch this ride. It’s a lot.”
He knows you mean it as reassurance, but he can’t stand the way you’re looking at him, as if he were a frightened child, too fragile to be brought along. Are you regretting having convinced him to change his mind? Do you feel that he’s only holding you back? Somehow, the idea that you no longer want him here is almost as sickening as the thought of the fall.
Loki huffs a breath. No. He will prove himself worthy of your coaster. “I assure you, I am fine.” His voice is more strained than he’d prefer it to be. “Let’s get on with it, shall we?”
The attendant seems rather starstruck as he ushers the group onto the ride—he stumbles and stammers through the explanation of the seating arrangements and the harness. Loki’s not really listening as he follows you to the left side of the cart, trying not to ignore the buzzing that seems to be settling behind his ears.
You smile up at him. “Would you rather sit on the side or in the middle?”
He frowns. “Does it make a difference?”
“Well, personally I don’t think so, but I know some people who get scared of heights think it’s easier to sit in the middle.”
“I’m not scared of heights.” The words come out far too quickly to sound believable, and he curses inwardly at himself. “I can sit on the side.”
“Are you sure?”  You eye him uncertainly. “It’s okay if you—"
“I’m quite capable of managing such a seat.” He sits before you have the chance to question him again.
The seat is rather tight—Loki wonders if that’s intentional, or if it’s simply built with a smaller frame in mind. In the cart off to the right, he can hear Thor fumbling about with the attendant, and he chuckles despite himself. If he’s finding it to be a bit of a squeeze, he can’t imagine the troubles his bulky brother must be having.
It’s a momentary reprieve from his darker thoughts, and Loki is actually smiling when you warn him to sit back against the seat.
“The harness is going to be coming down soon.”
“What?”
You motion to the contraption above the cart, two plastic green masses shaped like upside down u’s that hover above your heads like the top of a clam shell. “It sits over you and keeps you from flying out of the cart.” You let out a small laugh. “It’s like the harnesses on the Quinjets, but way less cool. They also have little handles that you can hold on to if you want.”
Loki is eyeing the harnesses uncertainly. “What do you mean they’ll be coming down soon?”
“You used to have to pull it down yourself, but they have it all programmed now.” A great mechanical creak cracks through the air, and you press yourself against the back of the seat. “Oh, here it comes now!”
He frowns, mimicking your movement to sit as far back as he can. The green restraint descends slowly over his head, with a metallic groan that does not give him much faith in the construction of this monstrosity. He expects it to stop once it was hovering over his torso, but it continues until it’s pressed snuggly against his chest, pinning him to the seat. The attendant is saying something over the intercom, but Loki barely registers it over the feeling of the restraint. It’s … it’s not a painful sensation, but the firmness with which it holds … he’s been restrained before. Little flames of memory spark in the corners of his mind, flames he can’t seem to douse no matter how hard he tries.
Get it off. Get it off. Get it off.
He gives an apprehensive tug on the metal handles that now rest on either shoulder, a tug which quickly turns into a hard yank. The harness does not move. His mouth has gone dry.
“Loki?” you’re frowning at him, your head only barely visible through your own harness. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
You’re not bothered by the restraint. Of course you aren’t—how many times did you say you’ve ridden this ride? It’s fine. It’s fine. Goodness, what must you think of him, seeing him panic over the safety harness that you’ve worn hundreds of times before for fun? He nods his head, shaking away the feelings and memories and emotions and all the other thoughts that he wishes he could just wash down the drain …
“Are you sure—?”
“Perfectly,” he spits, but it comes out more snappishly than he intended, and you recoil with a look on your face that makes him despise himself.
I shouldn’t be allowed to speak.
“And enjoy your ride!” the attendant finishes with a flourish, and the thick metal cranking is all the warning you get before the cart begins to lift off from the ground. Loki’s heart jumps to his throat, pounding so fast he can’t make out the separate beats.
“This part is the scariest bit,” you yell at him over the grinding of machinery. “The anticipation kills me!”
Loki inhales. The elevator continues to rise, inching up slowly along the spire, the ground beneath their feet melting into miniature. This is alright, he tells himself. If this is the worst part of the experience, then he’ll be just fine. There’s nothing particularly frightening about it—he spoke the truth when he told you that he had never been bothered by heights. It’s all perfectly fine.
Perfectly. Fine.
Norns, they’re still going up. He risks a glance at the track above him—surely they must be close now? The movement makes him queasy, and he quickly turns back to face straight ahead. His knuckles are white from clutching the handles. The harness is digging into his chest and it takes all of his self-control not to rip it off. The elevator stutters—is this it? His breath catches, but no, they’re still going up. They seem to be slowing down though, don’t they? Or is that only his imagination?
I’m going to be ill.
They’ve stopped. That’s not in his head. Everything seems frozen in place. Why did he agree to do this? Loki presses his eyes closed. Any moment now. Any moment …
Still nothing.
His chest aches. He may have forgotten to breathe. Why have they stopped? Is something wrong? Loki turns to you—you look ecstatic, eyes crinkled with elation, mouth wide in an open grin.
“When is it going to—”
You drop.
The world goes silent. He feels it, that awful sensation in his stomach as the line goes slack and colors rush before his eyes in a blur until it all fades to darkness, airlessness, weightlessness, his lungs burning and drowning on the empty void of space—he’s falling, he’s falling again, he’s falling again oh please Norns not again—
There’s ground beneath his feet. He’s not sure where it came from. His knuckles ache. You’re talking – to him? He’s not sure, he only barely can make out your voice …
“Loki? The harness is coming up. Can you let go?”
He’s still clinging to the handles. Can he let go? He’s not sure. His body feels like lead. He pries his fingers from the metal tube and the pressure against his chest vanishes with a woosh over his head.
“There you go.” Your voice is soft, encouraging, closer than he remembered. He looks up to find you kneeling on the ground before him. You flash a nervous smile. “You alright?”
He’s not sure what to say. His instinct is to apologize, insist that yes, of course, he’s quite alright, he didn’t mean to give any impression to the contrary, everything is fine, but the words catch in his throat.
stars melting together smothering his last breath
Loki lets out a shuddering breath, settles for a nod.
“What’s the hold-up?” Stark calls out. “Barton and Romanov are waiting with the kids on the other side of the park.”
“We’re just taking a break for a minute!” Your reply is hurried. “You guys can go on, we’ll meet you there.”
“Is something wrong?” Thor sounds concerned, and—oh great—now both him and Stark are walking over to their cart. “Loki? What happened?”
“I—” But words, so often his steadfast ally, seem to be failing him right now. What happened? He has no answer; at least, none that his brother would accept. For nothing had happened, not really, and yet that was enough to send him spiraling through the fabric of reality.
He hates this. He hates feeling so weak.
Stark is chuckling. “If I knew that this was all it took to shut him up, I would have rented this place out sooner—”
Enough.
Loki forces himself to stand – far too quickly, his stomach churns at the movement, but he swallows the bile in his throat. He needs to get away. It doesn’t matter how, but he needs to not be with them. Besides him, you scramble to your feet too.
“I’m well.” His voice doesn’t sound right—it feels foreign, and thick like syrup, nothing like his own. “You may go on without me.”
“Are you certain?” Thor is frowning. “We can wait—”
Please don’t.
“I’m certain. I just need to sit for a moment.”
“There’s a bench nearby!” You’ve taken on the same cheery inflection typical of your working voice, and it adds a sense of normalcy to a distinctly abnormal situation. He’s grateful for it. “I can show you where!”
Both Stark and his brother seem reluctant to leave, but you insist that it’s fine. “I’ll call you if anything changes.”
He feels slightly steadier as he follows you to the bench—it’s just a wooden thing on the side of the concrete path, across from what appears to be a diner of some sort. You mumble something about going to get water. It’s a relief when you turn away, so you don’t see how he collapses against the seat.
There’s ground beneath his feet. Loki closes his eyes, focuses on that. There’s ground beneath my feet. The asphalt is firm, hot with the summer sun, anchoring him to reality. He lets out a breath. It feels safe.
Unless, of course, it crumbles beneath your step and flings you back into the abyss –
“Hey.” He jerks up at the sound of your voice, and the suddenness causes you to jump as well. You shift apologetically, standing in front of him. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Loki swallows. How did he not hear you come up? “You didn’t.” Although it must be obvious that you did. At least you’re kind enough to allow him the lie.
You offer him a plastic cup. It’s a flimsy thing, but quite cold, relieving against his feverish skin. He takes it with a mumbled thanks, pretending he doesn’t notice how you’re studying him with a quiet sort of concern.
“Are you feeling better?” you ask after a moment.
Loki bites down on the inside of his cheek, relishing the way it stings. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“It’s just – I mean – ” you glance down, tugging at your shirt sleeve. “I get panic attacks too.”
“I don’t—” But he stops himself, stops the urge to argue. Gives a gentle nod instead. “I’m well, thank you. I just … I need a moment to catch my breath.”
“I’m sorry …” You look away guiltily. “Death Drop is kind of a lot – we shouldn’t have done that first.”
“It’s not that. I –” He wants to explain to you. He wants you to know that he’s not usually like this—he never used to be like this, he’s strong and steady and perfectly capable of anything you could ask of him, but his voice is failing once again. Loki huffs a sigh. “You ought to go on with the others. I don’t wish to ruin your day.”
“Oh, you haven’t ruined anything. I’ve been on every ride in this park about a million times. It’s fine!” Your voice is bubbly and light as you sit down next to him on the bench. There’s something oddly comforting about the sound. “Besides, it’s bad etiquette to leave a friend by themselves at an amusement park. Buddy system and all that.”
A friend. He can only stare at you.
You falter. “Unless … unless you’d rather I left?”
“No—” Loki surprises himself with how quickly he answers. “No, I’d rather you didn’t.”
Several minutes pass in silence, the frantic beating of his heart slowly tapering off into something softer as he drinks in your presence. He’s grateful for it, grateful for how you let him soak in the quiet. Thor would never have allowed him such a moment’s peace.
He’s considering asking if you’re sure you don’t want to go on any other coasters (he feels guilty for keeping you here—perhaps he can accompany you through the queue and wait on the ground?) when you suddenly sit up stock-straight. “Oh!”
Loki frowns. “Is something wrong?”
You turn to him with a wide grin. “I just remembered they have Dole Whip here!”
“They—what kind of whip?” What sort of ride would a whip be, he wonders? A human sized slingshot, perhaps? His stomach lurches at the thought.
Luckily though, he’s proved wrong. “Dole Whip!” you giggle. “It’s like ice cream, but fruit flavored. Like there’s pineapple and strawberry and whatnot—it’s like soft serve.” You look at him with a kind of hopeful excitement. “Do you want to try some?”
Loki hums. He has yet to try soft serve ice cream, but he knows his brother practically swears by the stuff. “Is it good?”
“Supposedly. I’ve actually never tried it— we never wanted to spend money on park food when we would come as kids. It’s stupid expensive.” You smirk. “But today’s all on Mr. Stark’s dime, so…”
He chuckles. “And you would take advantage of your employer in such a fashion? I didn’t realize I had such a Machiavellian on my hands.”
“Hey, I’m just taking advantage of the opportunities presented to me!” You stand with a grin, holding your hands up in a mock surrender pose. “You can’t blame me for that, can you?”
“Oh, I’d never,” he teases as he stands, and he’s relieved to find that his legs have regained their steadiness. “I’d be honored to experience this Dole Whip with you on Stark’s expense.”
“Fantastic,” you beam. “It’s not too far from here. And it’s right next to a bunch of these little shops—they have this ridiculous giant sea monster toy that costs like $300, I can show you—”
You continue on as the both of you walk down the path, telling him all about the park’s various hidden gems and the inside jokes you and your friends have concocted around them, and Loki finds himself laughing more than not—he can’t help it, your giggles are just too infectious.
Huh. Perhaps joining you today wasn’t a mistake after all.

New "Game"!
Let's strip bare and show our drafts!
I have a few drafts that I created in July of 2021 that still are nowhere near to being written. Yet I can't delete them... I hope I'm not the only one 😂
So here a little overview of what might be written one day...😬
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Loki we got the Series "Entwined" which was the reason I even started writing again. To this day, I haven't written down 1 single word for that series aside from an outline
The series "Destinies call" actually has one chapter that I almost finished last year in september but I didn't want to start a new series until I finished my "Burnt" series...
Speaking of which, Chapter 8 sits unfinished in my drafts even though it's so close to completion. I only got to write the parts between the dialogue 😅
For The Sandman we got a Series and an angsty Oneshot that sit in there since last year/beginning of this year
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then a Robert Laing Fic I started last summer and never finished, and ofc the current SPN Fic that I hopefully finish soon... 😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now it's your turn! And now I wait and hope I'm not the only one with drafts that are old af 😬

Peter the Machmaker
꒰ა ˚₊ ✧・┈﹕Loki masterlist ꒰ ᐢ。- ༝ -。ᐢ ꒱ Navigation ﹕┈・𐑺 ‧₊˚໒꒱
Please note that this story is a repost from my old blog @lucywrites02.
Summary: Peter had enough of you and Loki pretending there’s nothing more than friendship between the two of you so he decided to take the matters in his own hands
Word count: 2.5k
Tumblr media
Loki was sitting on one of the armchairs in the living room peacefully reading. Peter was next to you on the couch silently doing his homework. You also tried to read and by tried you mean looking at the god of mischief every 5 seconds and turning the pages of your book once in a while. You would never admit it to anyone but you have been crushing on the trickster for some time now. Your friendship with him quickly blossomed into something more but you were convinced those feelings were one sided. What you didn’t know was that Loki was also pretending to be so engrossed in the story while looking in your direction from time to time. Peter of course noticed this and he must admit, Loki was way better at this than you. He wanted to make a comment about it but decided to do something else. You were so caught up in your mind you didn’t feel when Peter poked your arm to get your attention.
“Yes, Peter?” you turned to the boy and closed the book you were “reading”
“I’m really hungry. Could you help me make that spaghetti I really like?” the young avenger looked at you with the biggest  puppy eyes you have ever seen “Please?” now you couldn’t say no to him, could you.
“Sure!” you ruffled his hair and walked to the other room with him. You didn’t notice Loki’s gaze following your movements. You started to look for the necessary ingredients when your friend spoke again.
“Soooooo-” he put his hands in his pockets and looked at you with amusement in his eyes.
“Sooo?” you asked, confused by his behaviour. He usually acted like that when he wanted to ask you if he could play with Steve’s shield but you knew it wasn’t that. He has been acting very strangely everytime you were in the same room with Loki. You feared he found out about your crush but chances for that were slim. After all you are a master at hiding your feelings. There is no way a teenage boy could figure it out.
“I wanted to ask you for advice,” he continued “I have a friend who has feeling for one of my other friends but none of them will make the first move,” he sat down at the stool and you leaned on the counter, facing him “and it’s obvious they like each other. Everyone sees it but not they!”
“They sound like a couple of dumbasses” you joked
“Only if you knew…” Peter murmured and thank god you didn’t hear him saying it.
“Tell me more about them! I like the whole mutual pinning slash  dumbasses in love trope. Do I know those people???” you laughed. That was Peter’s chance!
“Oh, you know them very well,” now the boy really had your attention “You see, one of them is an ancient norse god whose brother happens to be the god of thunder and the other one is looking at me right now.” Peter smirked. He wanted to do this cool thing where he leaned on the chair but forgot he was sitting on a stool and almost collapsed.
“I’m sorry?” needless to say, you did not expect that.
“I have been watching you and Loki for weeks!” he announced “I can see it, I’m not blind.”
You were surprised, angry and scared all at the same time. You tried to hide those feelings and then eventually forget about them but now that Peter knew, you couldn’t deny it anymore.
“Ok, yes!” you surrendered “I’m in love with Loki. Happy?”
“You’re in love with Loki?!?!?!” Peter shouted “I figured you had a crush but love? It’s wow, I mean WO-” you covered his mouth with your hand and looked behind you to check if anyone heard him
“Could you speak even louder next time?” you asked sarcastically “Besides, what do you know about love? You’re 12!” Peter pushed your hand away and took a step back
“Actually, I’m 15-”
“Still a child!” you whispered. “And just because you love someone doesn’t mean you can be with them!” you wouldn’t tell him how many tears you have cried the night you realised you loved Loki. You knew it was something you couldn’t have and so you tried to get rid of those feelings as soon as possible. A human was no match to a god.
“But you guys would look so cute together!” he exclaimed “And what’s stopping you from being with Loki?”
“Peter, sometimes people can’t be together. Loki is a god with superhuman abilities and I can’t even fire a gun! And he doesn’t even feel the same…” you explained
“Why do adults have to complicate such  simple things?” Peter murmured under his nose. It was clear to him how much you meant to Loki and he really wanted you to see it, too. But hey, you wouldn’t be yourself if you weren’t so stubborn.
“Why do kids think everything is easy?” you playfully punched his shoulder “I actually don’t feel like cooking today,” you announced, changing the subject  “How about chinese?” Peter signed and nodded. He will make one of you confess sooner or later.
✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧
“What do you mean you have never seen Star Wars ?” Peter and Loki were engaged in a conversation about their favourite movies and you must admit it was cute. “I LOVE it! My friend Ned and I have bought a replica of the death star and we built it together! It was so cool!” The boys enthusiasm really amused the god
“Peter, he has just said he hadn’t seen it. Loki probably doesn’t know what the death star is.” you yelled from the kitchen. You guys decided to have a movie night and you were the one preparing the snacks while the boys tried to decide what to watch.
“We have to watch it then!” you knew Peter has seen those movies so many times he could probably recite the whole script sentence by sentence.
“Maybe ask Loki if he would like that” you proposed, popping your head out of the kitchen
“Peter seems to be very enthusiastic about those movies,” the god said “I would love to see what’s so interesting about them” he affectionately ruffled Peter’s head and sat down on the couch. Seeing him being so happy and friendly with Peter made your heart beat faster. With every passing minute you found more and more reasons to love this man. The loud beeping of the microwave pulled you out of your thoughts. You opened it and took the popcorn out. You put it into a big bowl and walked into the living room again. You put it on the small coffee table and turned around to sit down next to Loki.
As you were about to do it Peter “accidentally” pushed you away. You squicked in surprise, ready to hit the ground but instead you landed on someone’s lap. That someone was no other than god of mischief himself. At first you didn’t feel his hands on your waist supporting you but when you realised how awkward this position probably looked you felt your face getting warmer.
“OMG!” Peter shouted “I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you there!” the boy sounded really convincing but you knew he wasn’t sorry at all. You could see the smile forming on his face. You are so going to kill this kid….
“Darling is everything all right?” Loki asked, concerned. You turned to look at him and your noses almost touched. You had no idea you were so close to him. The trickster’s hands were gently caressing your waist and you prayed he couldn’t hear your heartbeat.
“I- I’m fine, sorry!” all you could feel was embarrassment. You hoped off his lap and sat down on the armchair next to the couch. You didn't dare to look at  him again and focused on the screen.
Loki on the other hand wasn’t as interested in that movie as he was before. The god was glancing at you from time to time hoping you would make eye contact with him. He wasn’t able to think about anything else at the moment than you sitting on his lap during future movie nights. He adored how you would hug the pillow during the suspenseful moments and how you would laugh at the jokes. It made him smile which, of course, didn’t go unnoticed by Peter. When the  god realised that you had fallen asleep he took the blanket that was hanging on the other armchair and covered you with it, carefully tucking you in. He leaned closer wanting to kiss your forehead but remembered that the spider-man was still there.
“I’m going to refill my drink-” Loki announced and stood up “do you want anything?” he asked and walked away, not waiting for the boy’s response
“No, thank you?” Peter said, amused by the fact that Loki didn’t even take his glass with him. Deciding to finally confront Loki about his feelings for you he took the glass and walked to the kitchen. He handed it to Loki with a smirk “You forgot this” Loki thanked him and poured some water. “Sooooooo-” Loki took a sip as Peter started to talk again “Are you going to tell Y/N you’re in love with them?” The trickster choked on the water and coughed a few times before forcefully putting the glass down on the counter.
“I beg your pardon?” Loki wondered if he wasn’t hiding his feelings as well as he thought he did. Peter left an annoyed sign and smacked his head.
“You guys are hopeless…..” and with that statement the younger avenger left the room
Loki has been standing in the same spot with his mouth slightly open  for a good 10 minutes before he ran after Peter to…. To what? He’s not going to confront the kid while you’re sleeping peacefully 2 meters away from him. He’s not going to ask the boy for any relationship advice. He’s not that desperate….. On the other hand…? No. He’s not going to ask a kid how to court a midgardian. That’s not happening. Never.

“Just ask them out and tell them you’re in love with them!” Peter said while he and Loki were having breakfast together
“What if they say no?” the trickster asked
“Believe me, they won’t say no,” Peter was getting really frustrated. You and Loki are so stupid. Incredibly cute but so, so stupid.
That didn’t seem to ease god’s anxiety. He wanted to ask Peter more questions but you came in.
“Good Morning!” you greeted them and playfully patted their heads “Thanks for taking me to bed. My back would have hurt like a bitch if I stayed in that armchair any longer”
“Mister Loki carried you!” Peter said enthusiastically “Do you want some pancakes?”
“Well, thank you Loki,” you smiled at the god and opened the cupboard to look for your favourite mug. “ And yes Peter, I would love some”
“Oh your mug is here!” your teenage friend announced and pointed at it “Mister Loki made you some coffee! Isn’t that right, mister Loki?” The trickster looked at Peter as if he wanted to kill him. He wouldn’t do that, of course. But who knows, maybe Peter will wake up with pink hair tomorrow….
“Well, thank you, mister Loki,” you turned to the god and patted his shoulder.
“That’s what friends are for, darling” Loki mentally smacked himself for saying it. Peter on the other hand did smack his own forehead pretty hard. This man/god was hopeless.
“It’s good to have a friend like you, Loki. I really appreciate it” Peter rose to his feet and pointed at you two.
“I have enough of this!” he said. You could see how frustrated he was “I have been trying to make one of you confess to the other for TWO WEEKS!” you and Loki glanced at each other and then back at Peter “I’m so sorry for yelling but will you two PLEASE just kiss or something!” he shouted at you and went out of the kitchen.
There was a long pause between you and Loki before you spoke, still not looking at the god.
“Is… is Peter ok?” there was no response. Wanting to leave the room you stood up and turned around. As you took the first step you felt a hand on your wrist.
“Is it true?” Loki turned you around to face him “Is it true you have feelings for me?” you just looked at him dumbfounded. You are so going to kill that child. You  were completely unable to say a word. You just woke up and this little teenage arachnid wants to humiliate you in front of your crush. Loki took your silence as a rejection and let go of your hand. “Oh, I-I think there has been a misunderstanding,” he said and you nodded awkwardly.
“Yeah, totally,” you toyed with your sleeves, trying to  ease your nerves “You know how Peter is. He sees things that aren’t there!” you laughed awkwardly “I mean, it would be crazy, you know. Us. Together?”
“Right?” Loki grinned “We as a couple? You and I in a romantic relationship? That just wouldn’t make sense!” the trickster playfully punched your shoulder but did not remove his hand. You two gazed into each other’s eyes and the god cleared his throat “Unless that’s what you want….” he removed a strait of hair that has fallen onto your face and put it behind your ear.  “Tell me I’m not wrong here, Y/N.” he never called you by your name unless he was dead serious. You covered his hand that was gently caressing your cheek with yours.
“You’re not wrong, Loki” you whispered. That was all the god needed to hear. His other hand rested on your waist and he pulled you so close your chests were touching. You get on your tiptoes and softly put your lips on his. The trickster wanted to deepen the kiss but was interrupted but a loud, high pitched scream.
“YEEESSS!” you got scared and jumped, hitting Loki’s forehead in process
“What the hell, Peter?!?!?!” you and Loki said at the same time. The boy runned to you and embraced you and Loki.
“I knew it would work out!!!” You couldn't be mad at him even if you wanted. Loki only patted the spider-man’s back and hugged you tighter to his body.
“You did a great job, Peter,” the god of mischief said
“Peter’s matchmaking service is always here for you”  with that the boy ran out of the room to tell everyone else about the newest couple in the town.

Broken mirrors
꒰ა ˚₊ ✧・┈﹕Loki masterlist ꒰ ᐢ。- ༝ -。ᐢ ꒱ Navigation ﹕┈・𐑺 ‧₊˚໒꒱
Please note that this story is a repost from my old blog @lucywrites02.
Summary: During one of his depressive episodes Loki wonders if someone like him would ever be worthy of you. Will your love be enough to keep him alive?
Word count: 1.1k
Tumblr media
Loki was standing in front of  the mirror that was in his room. He was supposed to accompany you to Tony's birthday party but here he was, blue skin and red eyes, watching his reflection with disgust on his  face. He couldn’t understand why you would ever want to be with him. He promised  he would talk to you if he was having another depressive episode again but you were so excited to attend this party. He didn’t want you to stay because of him. Since the two of you got together all he has wanted was to make you happy. But would a monster like him ever be able to  make you happy?
“Nothing but another stolen relic”
“Your birthright was to die”
Those words were all he could think about at the moment. The sadness and hopelessness  he felt only seconds ago turned into anger.  Loki looked at himself one more time before shattering the mirror into small pieces. He had no idea when that happened. He can’t remember when his fist decided to crush into it. Seeing his blue hand covered in blood Loki felt empty. He was so caught up in this moment he didn’t even hear when the door opened.
“Loki! I was looking for y-” seeing Loki’s blue face you stopped in your tracks and went completely silent. You then noticed the pieces of, what you assumed, used to be his mirror.
You knew he was a Jotun but you have never seen him in this form before. Loki didn’t have any time to hide as you barged through the door. He had no time to cover his face or change back to his other form. It was too late for that. Not wanting to see as you fled from the room in terror, Loki closed his eyes and held his breath. But that never happened. You didn't scream nor have you called anyone to help you. He never meant for you to see this side of him. This beast he tried so hard to hide from you. And he ruined it all. You have seen it, there is no going back now. He tried to say something but no words would come out of the gods mouth. Will you leave him, now that you know that he’s a monster? Will you ever speak to him again? The trickster didn’t even notice when the tears started pouring out of his eyes. He couldn’t live knowing you hate him.
“I didn’t mean to barge in like that,” you said softly “I’m sorry if I scared you” he looked at you confused. Why were you apologizing to HIM? Loki was the one who should be begging for  forgiveness on his knees.
You knew how hard it was for him to accept his heritage. Wanting to comfort him you put your hand on his shoulder but Loki jumped away from you as if your touch was burning his skin.
“Please don’t touch me! I don’t want to hurt you” he shouted and walked backwards until his back hit the wall. “I-I never meant for you to see me li-like this. I-I’m so sorry”
Your heart broke when you noticed how terrified he was. His red eyes were glassy because of the tears and his hands were shaking. The trickster started to feel dizzy and he couldn’t breathe properly. He hadn’t had a panic attack in a while and this one felt particularly bad. Noticing the sudden change of his body language you quickly figured out what was happening. The god collapsed on the floor and hid his head between his knees. You walked to him and kneeled down. You have seen him having an attack like that and knew what he needed.
“It’s ok,” you said gently embracing him. He was still too afraid to touch you and stiffened at the contact of your warm body. “I know what you are thinking about and I want you to know that I am not afraid of you. I need you to breathe, ok” he closed his eyes again and nodded rapidly.
It took you some time to calm him down but after a while his breathing went back to normal. You knew how much he loved it when you played with his hair so you started to comb his raven black locks with your fingers. You two stayed like that for a few minutes until Loki spoke again.
“How are you not scared?” he still wouldn’t look you in the eyes but  was watching your every move. “I’m a monster! A beast! People on Asgard tell their children how terrible and scary we are! Could you ever want to be with something like me?”
“Loki, I will always want you,” you cupped his face with your hands and made him look at you “I know we haven’t been together for long but I want you to know that I love you, Loki” you confessed, softly caressing his cheeks. “I love you no matter what gender or colour you are or from which planet you came from.”  Trickster’s eyes were once again filled with tears but this time there were the tears of happiness. He knew you cared about him but he has never dared to dream about love  “You see this?” you asked taking one of his blue hands in yours “You can’t hurt me, Loki. I know you would never do that to me. And believe me when I say that you are no monster.”
“You have no idea how much I needed to hear that.” he said and hugged you tightly. “I love you. More than you could ever imagine….” he whispered and the two of you stayed like that for some time, silently crying in each other’s arms. You slowly pulled away and wiped your tears.
“By the way, it really suits you.” you announced with a smile
“What do you mean?” Loki asked confused
“The colour blue,” you said as your index finger was gently tracing the markings on his skin. “it really suits you. Especially since your eyes are red. They are a great combination” he looked at you with love and adoration.
“I was wondering,” you continued, “do those markings mean something? They are exquisite. And do your eyes somehow help you see better in the dark? Do you have a night vision or something like tha-” you stopped talking when you felt Loki’s lips on yours.
Putting your hands around his neck you deepened the kiss. His hands were softly caressing your back and pulled you as close to his body as physically possible. Although he radiated cold you didn’t mind at all because you wouldn’t have it any other way.
You didn’t know this at the time but that night you saved his life and gave him hope. With that single confession you made him want to live again...

Through Panes of Glass
Summary: A mission in an alternate timeline brings Loki face to face with a relic from his past. Against better judgment, he finds himself seeking out one far more dear.
Word Count: 1,435
Pairing: Loki x Sigyn
Tumblr media
A/N: So after months of writer's block and worsening mental health struggles, I suddenly got really inspired yesterday to write something based on "I Look In People's Windows." It's a really quick little thing, and I'm not sure if it will appeal to anyone but myself, but it feels incredibly good to have written something. Also, while this is technically series flavored, it really has nothing to do with it-- I just really liked the concept of Loki being in an alternate timeline, and the details of how and why he ended up there weren't very important to me.
Thank you so much for reading!!

He found himself looking in windows.
A shameful act, he knew, but he tried to push through the abashment by telling himself that if the mortals cared about their privacy, they wouldn’t be living out their lives so readily in front of unobstructed glass. No, the houses on this street were all alight with life, the curtains drawn all the way back. It seemed as though it was meant to be.
He glanced through another and locked eyes with an elderly woman huddled in her chair beneath a cocoon of blankets, fixing him with a scowl as deep as the lines on her face. Loki whipped his gaze back to the pavement, cheeks burning as he hurried along.
He was wasting time. They had come to this timeline with a purpose, and that purpose was certainly not leering through windows with the hope of catching sight of a ghost. He was late to the rendezvous point as it was – it was only a matter of time before they sent someone looking for him. Loki knew this. And yet he kept going.
This wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t met Fandral at that bar. It had startled him out of his laser focus – he understood the concept of variants, of course, but he hadn’t expected to find relics of his past here on Midgard, so far away from where they existed in his mind. But there he was: cozying up on the counter, his arms around a woman’s shoulders, that same Fandral smirk tickling his lips beneath his mustache as he whispered something against her skin that made her giggle. It was all so familiar.
Loki’s mind had gone blank. He forgot all sense of protocol, nearly calling out Fandral’s name out of some stunned instinct, but thankfully his partner had held him back with a sharp whisper.
“Different timeline, remember?”
And it was. This Fandral was not the one Loki knew from childhood – this was a mortal man, who spent his days tucked away in some florescent cubicled labyrinth and his nights skulking through the city in a fruitless search for stimulation, before dragging his weary bones back to his overpriced studio apartment to start the whole thing anew in the morning. Seeing him here meant nothing.
Except, if Fandral’s variant was in this city, could that mean …?
He didn’t let himself finish the thought. It was silly, he told himself, even as he continued flittering down the sidewalk like a moth in search of light. Absolutely ridiculous. One Asgardian-turned Midgardian variant didn’t guarantee that there would be another. And even if it did, even in the off chance that he did find her, what would he do once he had? She wouldn’t know him – it wouldn’t even be her, just some person with her face and name, none of her memories, none of her soul. What could he do but stare at her like some sort of lunatic?
But you’d see her, whispered a small voice in the back of his mind, you’d get to see her again.
Loki swallowed. The last time he saw her – it had been before the Bifrost. How many lifetimes had he lived since then? So much of his memory from that time had turned gray and hazy, but she still glowed when he pictured her, swathed in the gentlest blue, her chestnut curls soft beneath his chin as she pressed her cheek to his collarbone. She smelled of the forest, fresh and free and forever unfettered, but she bound herself to him with her embrace. He took her hand in his and cherished the way her ring pressed against his palm, warm with the heat of her body.
Was it a memory, or perhaps only a dream? He huffed – a dream would hurt less. She had died after his fall. Some sort of illness – they all told him it was unrelated, but Loki knew in his heart that he had killed her. He had sworn to live out the rest of his life at her side, but instead he abandoned her to the wolves of his demons, left her to face the fallout alone.
No wonder the void hadn’t the mercy to kill him.
There was another house coming up, another window – a busy one, if the cars jammed into the driveway were anything to go by. Sure enough, he found a party behind the glass, and a fancy one at that, the air abuzz with wine glasses clinking and the elegant swish of long evening dresses. He could feel the warm hum of their laughter, trickling out even into this starless night. Loki gazed at each face that passed before him, praying for some hint of familiarity, but they were all strangers to him.
And that’s what she would be to him, he realized. Nothing but a stranger. Perhaps she had been so changed by this timeline that he wouldn’t know her face even if he were to come across it.
Loki sighed. The signpost designating the end of the street grew nearer and nearer. He had wasted nearly an hour now on this little side mission, and all he had to show for it was a newly potent ache in his chest. He needed to get to the rendezvous point. Enough shadow-chasing.
It was the house on the corner. He told himself it was the last one, he’d give himself this one last attempt and then he’d move on. He didn’t expect to see her.
But then he saw her.
Loki froze – truly froze. He couldn’t have run even if all the realms were chasing after him.
It was her.
Hunched over a sink, scrubbing at a skillet with a yellow sponge, dark curls tied up behind a blue bandanna, glaring down at her work with the same steadfast ferocity he remembered so vividly from sparring pits of his youth — it was her!
He breathed her name, whispered it like a prayer as he took the smallest step forward. The tip of his boot grazed her front lawn, but he barely noticed. She … she was beautiful. His eyes burned, then misted over, a garbled cry falling from his lips. She was there. She was moving, she was breathing, she was right there just behind the glass—
And then she looked up, and their eyes met.
His breath caught in his throat. He should have hurried away, should have left before she had the chance to catch a glimpse of him, but he felt rooted to the pavement, held captive by the power of her stare. Oh those eyes — how many nights had he dreamed of swimming in the amber pools of her eyes once more? He remembered her laying against him at night, the way he’d cup her head to kiss over each eyelid as she pulled him in closer and let out the sweetest sigh ever heard. For one beautiful moment, he looked into her eyes, and it was like coming home.
But then the moment passed. There was no recognition in her gaze, no warm smile or sweet relief. No, her brow only furrowed in confusion, head cocked as she studied this stranger gawking at her through her window, and the spell was broken. She might as well have doused him in ice water.
Because wish as he might, it wasn’t really her.
Loki stumbled backwards, nearly tripping over his own feet. What was he doing here? What must this woman think of him? How could he explain that he was leering at her through the glass because she looked like someone he once loved? What was it to her? His wife was dead. What did it matter that he had found her doppelgänger?
He whipped back towards the street. The rendezvous point. That’s where his focus should be, not on some dark Midgardian street chasing after nonexistent ghosts. Imbecile. He forced himself forward, forced his eyes on the pavement before him and not at the light he was leaving behind, biting through his cheek until he tasted blood.
She stood at the window a bit longer, frowning at the man’s silhouette as he disappeared around the corner of the street. Really, she should have been more unnerved – someone watching her from the window, that sounded like something out of a stalker story, didn’t it? – but there was something about him, the stunned disbelief in his eyes, the way he went running off like a frightened rabbit …
“Sigyn?” Her boyfriend stuck his head through the doorway. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know,” she said. “There was some guy staring at me.”
