Hey Fam, just wondering what school colours and how to get them? Have a great day :)
Hey,
School colours are acknowledgements of the contribution you’ve made to the school. There are two types of school colours; Half and Full. These indicate the amount of service you have contributed to the school by years. Half is for a “commitment of a minimum of 1 ½ years of participation in the category or 1 year for new Year 11 students (exceptional students who were new to the school in Year 12 may also be considered)”, Full is for “a minimum of 2 years (students who start at the school in Year 11 may be considered for Full School Colours after a year of service)”.
School colours are awarded to those who have had a large impact on the school and co/extracurricular activities. Generally school colours are awarded to portfolio leaders (because of the nature of their position they committed lots of time to the improvement of school) and people without leadership positions who have participated in a lot of school activities (usually focused on a specific area ie. drama).
The nomination of school colours is done by portfolio leaders and teachers, and whether nominees receive colours are decided by Ms Dean based on a set of criteria.
Hope this helps!
Love,

When do middle school house captain apps come out
Hey,
We’d expect applications to come out soon but we’re not sure exactly when. It might be best to contact your house captains about this as they’d likely know and even if they can’t give you a definite answer, at the very least it shows you can take initiative and are keen to do so!

(Regarding Year 9 / 10) What languages does Mac Rob offer? Are they compulsory (that is, do you have to partake in one languages subject?) Is it compulsory to do Physical Education. I know most schools in Vic make it so but some schools, including mine, don’t :) What music programs are offered. Is there orchestra / training band / choir etc? What are the houses called? How are they decided? What leadership positions are offered (this may be Year 11 / 12)? What’s the highest position? XX
Hey,
There are currently four languages being taught at Mac.Rob : Indonesian, French, German and Japanese. In 2019, students may also undertake Latin should they wish. In Year 9, it is compulsory for all students to do a language in school. Also, the form classes are divided by the subject. For example, the students in 9D will all study German in Year 9. In Year 10, doing a language is still compulsory but you may drop doing a language at school if you are doing one externally, e.g. Chinese.
Physical Education is compulsory in both Year 9 and 10. There are four houses at Mac.Rob: Nereids (White/Purple), Oreads (Red), Naiads (Blue) and Dryads (Green). You are sorted randomly into the houses and you will likely have four other people in your form, who will be in the same house as you. However, if you had a sibling who went to Mac.Rob, you can ask to transfer into the same house.
There are a ton of leadership positions at Mac.Rob. Listed below are some of our portfolio positions as well as some others:
School Captain and Vice School Captain
SRC President and SRC Vice President
SAT Leaders (2x)
Sport Captains (2x)
House Captains (2x)
IT Captains (2x)
Environment Captains (2x)
Drama Captains (2x)
Social Service Captains (2x)
Music Captains (2x)
Debating Captains (2x)
F.A.M. Leaders (2x)
GIV Execs (4x)
Stage Managers (2x)
Pallas Editors (2x)
At Mac.Rob, we also have many ensembles on offer that you can join, like String Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Chorale (choir) you name it! We also have Orchestra and Symphonic Winds, which are Mac.Rob’s two biggest ensembles. Some require auditions or prior experience but there are many that anyone can join (honestly a lot, string instruments themselves have over eight ensembles for just strings).
Hope this helps.

Hi!! Tips for a good form Captain speech?
Hey anon,
Firstly, it’s awesome that you’re trying out for a leadership position. That takes a lot of courage! Whenever writing any speech it’s important to know what the role you’re applying for entails. Form captains represent the form and serve as the main source of communication between teachers/school captains and your form. Responsibilities include helping out during Macrob Week, attending regular meetings, organising form activities (such as form outings, battle of the forms and form competitions). Most importantly, a form captain ensures that their class has the best year ever!
It’s of course important to ensure people remember your speech so make it funny (everyone loves a good laugh). I find it helps when someone is relatable so perhaps share a funny story. Pop-culture references and puns are always really good too. Whatever you do, make sure you’re happy with your speech and it shows everyone who you really are because as cliche as it may sound, being yourself really makes a speech standout!
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll make an awesome form captain.

im new in year 9 and i want to join lots of leadership roles and i was wondering what kinda different roles there r @macrob ??? do you have anything related to arts or designs cos im v interested ;))
Hey there! :)
Welcome to MacRob, and it’s so great to see that you’re keen to get involved with our school life already! :) We’re pretty sure that there will also a leadership expo in the next couple of weeks that will let you meet the captains and get a feel for what we have, so stay tuned!
There are HEAPS of leadership roles and opportunities on offer in our school. Most
portfolios have a Cabinet/Exec team, and some which have Middle School exec positions for Years 9 and 10. Portfolios include SRC, Social Service, Enviro, IT, Drama, Sport, Debating & Public Speaking and Music. The captains of each portfolio will be sending out application details soon, if they haven’t already done so, so keep your eyes peeled for that!
We’re not entirely sure which arts you mean, so we’ll cover all of them :)
There aren’t any formal leadership positions currently in visual arts/design, but you can form a special interest club, looking at a field of art or something art or design related, which you would be a leader of. We totally encourage you to do that :)
In performing arts, there are heaps of roles available. You can be a director of House Chorals, Drama and Lipsynching, you can also be a House orchestra or madrigals conductor for Chorals.
There are also many formal roles in music, there is the Middle School Student Music Committee (2 students from Year 10), there are also section leaders (strings, percussion, brass, woodwind) and concertmaster and associate concertmaster positions in orchestra.
Also, later in year 10-12 a lot of leadership roles will require experience/dedication/interest in the area of leadership or in the school in general. As awesome as it is to have a leadership role in Year 9, don’t forget to join other committees/clubs and sign up for activities where you won’t be a leader but that will give you some exposure to an area of interest. Personally, signing up to help out at an activity that needed support lead to me getting a spot on a related committee the next year, and then becoming the leader of it in Yr 12.
Hope this helps, and have fun! :)

Hey fam, what does the form captain do in year nine specifically but also in general? Thanks 😊
Hey there,
Form captains are essentially responsible for relaying information from meetings to the form and collecting the form roll everyday in order to distribute any notices if there are any. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with form captains from all year levels as well as the school captains to help organise and run Mac.Rob Week
As a year 9 form captain, you’ll also have the responsibility to coordinate form challenges and also Battle of the Forms which is an event for year 9s that occurs at the end of the year.
This things are always subject to change so if you are a form captain next year, you’ll learn as you go!
All the best,FAM xx

Hi FAM, just wondering if you could go through the one-leadership-position rule /person, as I have understood there are a few exceptions, and in some cases you can hold more than one. Pallas Editor applications just opened, and I really want to apply but I'd also really love to try get involved making the school a better place in SRC. Also, do you think that students should be able to hold more than one leadership position? Given they are in different groups (eg. SAT and Pallas). Thanks!!!
Hey there,
We’re not too sure about the rules surrounding leadership and holding multiple positions either as there have been changes to leadership throughout our time at Mac.Rob and there never seemed to be any kind of explicit notice that let us know what positions allowed for other positions as well.
It’d be best to get in touch with Mrs Dean about this as she’ll be able to give you a definitive answer but in the past we think that Pallas Editor can only hold that position and not any others due to the magnitude and importance of that role. It might also be worthwhile to speak to our SRC presidents to see if there were any students this year that held multiple roles and what those roles were to see if they match up with what you’re thinking of applying for.
Sorry we couldn’t be of much help and all the best,FAM xx

Hi Fam, I'm yr11 and really want to try out for Fam next year, but I'm deathly unpopular (btw any tips on how to be less unliked?). Even though I'm not super outgoing or popular, I genuinely care about other people and know what it's like to have worries, which I can't say the same for lots of popular people. Do I have a chance? I'm pretty busy atm so please be honest because I can't afford to waste my time if I have no chance. If yes, any advice for applying? Thank you xx
Hey,
We understand where you’re coming from and we’re sorry that popularity dictates leadership positions in the way that it does sometimes.
We can’t tell you for sure what the probability is like for any person to be selected for any position – whether ‘popular’ or not – but regardless of that, we think that if this is something you really care about then it is absolutely worth trying out for. Sure if many people apply, not all of them will be selected but not trying at all means that you would have never gotten the chance to be selected no matter how much you may have wanted it. Don’t let the fear of not getting what you want stop you from going for it altogether. Be confident and put yourself out there.
If you don’t believe you will have the time to commit to FAM then, in that sense, FAM may not be the best portfolio for you to apply for because being a FAM member requires constant and maximal effort. As we are a collective, we need to be able to rely on each other and support each other, so if there are people who are unable to commit to their role and maintain their share of the work, it takes a toll on every other team member and affects the quality of the work that FAM does.

do fam leaders get embroidery on blazer or colours? not applying for the role just wanted to know.
Hi there,
Both FAM leaders will get ‘FAM Leader’ embroidered on their blazers. However, being a FAM Leader or holding any leadership role doesn’t guarantee half or full colours. There is still the possibility though, depending on your commitment to the school in a certain category (in this case Leadership).
For half colours you must have contributed to the respective category for a minimum of 1 ½ years and for full colours it is a minimum of 2 years. There are also other criteria that the student must meet.
Hope this helps!

Clarissa hasn't sent a link to the google drive, would it be possible for her to resend or for you to forward it to year 10s? thanks
Hi,
Our apologies; it seems that she had only sent it to the Year 12s. HOWEVER, SRC sent out an email to everyone with the link attached so be sure to check your inbox now!

hi fam! Have any of you have applied for or been involved in the Kwong lee dow young scholars program and if so, what was the experience like? Thanks :)
Hi there,
None of FAM have been involved in the program so unfortunately, we can’t share any experiences about it. Unlike with the Monash Scholars program, where the school lets anyone choose to apply and then will approve them from there), because a large number of students want to apply for the Kwong lee dow young scholars program, and the school is only allowed to recommend up to 5 (i think), they decide to shortlist a set of students, interview them and pick who they think are the best candidates for the program. Picking them doesn’t guarantee they will get in, it just means these are the students they approve to submit an application. Though we aren’t entirely sure how the school decides to shortlist students to be nominated for the program, we assume it depends on how well you do in class/ school involvement from which your teachers choose.
We can get you in touch with the recipients of the Kwong Lee Dow scholarship if you contact one of us directly :)

hey im thinking of applying to be a fam leader for next year so can you give me a short rundown of what you guys do like behind the scenes and like what the application process is. is there like a 'main' co-captain of the whole of fam and then 20 other subleaders type thing? thanks :)
Hey there,
So this year was the first year that Friends At Mac.Rob was considered a portfolio – meaning that yes there were two co-leaders and a team of around 20 students.
Here’s a bit of a summary of the application process we went through:
First, applications for FAM co-leaders opened
The requirement was a 1-2 page document with a couple questions asking why you want to be FAM leader and what you would bring to the table etc.
From these applicants, a shortlist of worthy candidates is compiled and invited to sit an interview with Miss Tinney and Gillian
The interview was a group interview so if you were shortlisted, you and around 2 others who are also shortlisted will go into the interview together and each get the chance to respond to a couple of questions
The FAM co-leaders are then chosen by Miss Tinney and Gillian after careful consideration. (Also anyone who is shortlisted for FAM leader but who does not get it is automatically offered a role on the team.)
Applications for FAM team are then opened
The process is similar to that of the co-leader applications whereby a document of questions is required to be filled out and then followed by an interview
Hopefully after all that you are selected to be a part of this wonderful group that is all for helping the community :)
Please remember to be doing it for the right reasons and not for a status or a badge. Being a part of FAM requires a lot of effort, passion, and dedication, and it’s all about supporting one another so we can support everyone in our community together.
If you have any more questions, feel free to contact us (details listed on the Meet the FAM page) or come up to us in person too!
Love,
FAM xx

how do i meet bois w out being in the musical? (i'm not talented, you see)
Heyo,
Probably through leadership to be able to interact more at selective schools. There’s also a lot of programs throughout the year like that conference at MHS where you can meet a lot of people. In my cohort in particular, I know that most non-macrob friends are made through mutual friends - so the more friends you make here, the more likely you’ll be able to meet someone outside of school :))

Hey! I know this isn’t really your field, but as you guys mentioned before the SRC tumblr isn’t active yet :’). So I’m just wondering about Vid committee, on the SRC family tree it’s listed under the Yr12 section, but in previous years applications were sent to everyone. Do you guys know what going on? Even if you can’t answer it completely thanks so much for you help still^^
Hey,
Very sorry for this late reply! We’re not too sure about what’s happening with Mac.Rob Video Committee however it’s also possible that the Vid Committee listed on the SRC family is actually referring to the committee that’ll organise and produce the annual Year 12 Video and not just videos for events in general.
It would be best to have a chat to the people in SRC, you can hit them up via their emails!

hey fam:) i was wondering what SRC rep is and how you become one
Hello!
A SRC Rep is a member of Mac.Rob’s Student Representative Council and acts, as the name says as a representative for the students of mac.rob - usually on behalf of their specific year level. You become one by applying via application, though the due date has unfortunately already passed.
Yours,
FAMxx
