A work for my "dreamworlds" Call from Nana Fernandes/BRASIL! 

Every quarter of the year there´ll be a mail art call with a new theme. Each artist was invited to send one piece related to the theme „dreamworlds“. 

All submissions will be presented on the MAAV – facebook page. Selected pieces of the submitted works will then be featured in a magazine.

Our mail art this month is created by @sensei_aishitemasu , an artist, cultural critic, filmmaker, and writer whose work explores race, pop culture, social justice, political activism, and sociopolitical theories. We met Seren through @humanresourcesla ‘s Time Space Money residency, where she created two films, The [Black] Americans EXTRAS: Detroit and Five Years Since Ferguson. As we worked on Carolyn Chen’s piece for this month’s release and thought about the question of “how to assemble,” we realized Seren’s work in art, community building, and activist organization was an important extension to that question.

Seren has created an incredible piece of mail art that reimagines a paper fortune teller toy. Titled “How to assemble… a future,” it juxtaposes the childhood experience of hopefully dreaming about the future with adult contemplations about the future, which are oftentimes accompanied by a sense of dread.

​I'm spending some time today editing photos of this series for an online show curated by Jody Zellen for Beyond Baroque. At the end of 2020 and in early 2021, attending galleries in person was not feasible due to the pandemic. This project responds to the social isolation of 2020, and my desire to create intimate physically present art experiences. I created and mailed out 105 unique prints, made using small linocut symbols, each symbol inspired by a story from my year, and each print a different collection of stories--a bit of conversation between the recipient and myself. I've pulled 6 that include images of the goddess Hygieia, Greek goddess of health, cleanliness, and hygiene. Rapid Eye was founded by Simon Dwyer in Poplar, East London, on 23rd January 1979. It has taken several different forms: as magazine, mailart campaign, series of booklets and audio tapes, coffee-table album, etc, culminating with a trilogy of deluxe editions inaugurating the final decade of the 20th Century.
