Say "NO" to Genocide - Call, email, mail your reps (Canada)
Me and my friend spent some time today writing letters to the House of Commons, plus we have been calling MPs daily. I haven't seen too many resources for this floating around on tumblr, so here's a lengthy guide on how to do this plus some sample scripts! Long post ahead since I think it will be most helpful to dump everything in one spot to reference. On desktop, use CTR F/CMD F to search for the topic -> Phone / Email / Letter Mail / Contacts / Demands / Scripts / Fax
Update 1 - Nov 23: Updated emails with "mailto" hyperlinks, edited demands, added fax section, added scotiabank pres fax number.
On the PHONE / General Tips
Introduce yourself and identify yourself as a constituent by providing your postal code or address.
Ask to speak to the MP directly, but do not be surprised if you must speak to the MP’s staff instead. Staff can help move your issue forward.
Give the reason for your call and explain your concern.
Focus on one or two main concerns per phone call. Do not unload on the MP or their staff with all of your political concerns at one time.
Ask clear and pointed questions that require some explanation.
Ask for a commitment to action.
KEEP IN MIND Tips for Calling MPs:
Tell the MP that this issue will matter to you in the next election.
Avoid revealing party affiliation or sympathies. If you show that your vote is already cast for a certain party, the MP may not have the incentive to respond to your requests.
Be as brief as possible while outlining concerns. Show that you respect their time.
Remain calm and respectful in dialogue. Be willing to work with them.
Follow up: Find out what actions were taken as a result of your call, and respond appropriately.
(Source: CPJ.ca)
CJPME Call Tool - Fill in the form, there will be suggested talking point. The tool will call your phone and then patch you through to your MP. If voicemail, state your concerns in 30 seconds. No address input will default you to call Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly.
EMAIL
Be sure you sign your email with your name and mailing address so they know you are a part of their riding.
You will most likely receive a PR-type response or no response at all, but please still send these. It disrupts operations, and it still contributes to pressuring your MP to act on behalf of your riding.
LETTER MAIL
Mail may be sent postage-free to any member of Parliament at the House of Commons address. You just need to use an MP's full title if they are Cabinet members. Cabinet mebers have "The Honourable" attached to their names.
Postcards are efficient in that they are small pieces of card stock and can be a short message plus demands, no need to get use envelopes.
The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1A 0A6

DEMANDS
Summarized from resistance groups such as H/mas, H/zbollah, PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine), DFLP (Marxist Democratic Front got the Liberation of Palestine), CJPME (Canadians for justice and peace in the middle east), and other anti-war, anti-imperialist, IRL Palestinians.
Canada needs to...
Call an immediate PERMANENT ceasefire to end bloodshed
Send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Institute embargo on all military exports to Israel
Close the embassies, and sanction Israel diplomatically and economically.
SCRIPTS
Use these as scripts for calling, emailing, and mailing. I suggest adding some of your own sentences and changing the subject lines (for email) so they don't end up in spam.
Example from Canada: Stop Arming Israel - World BEYOND War
As we mourn the thousands of people in Israel and Palestine who have been killed in the past few weeks we refuse to stand by and allow the only true winners in war — the weapons manufacturers — to continue to arm and profit off of it.
Canada exported over $21 million in military goods to Israel in 2022, including over $3 million in bombs, torpedoes, missiles, and other explosives. - 2022 Exports of Military Goods
Weapons companies across Canada are making a fortune off of the carnage in Gaza and the occupation of Palestine.
This is a call to action. It's time to stop letting these weapons companies profit off of the massacre of thousands of Palestinians. Find a location near you, get friends and allies together, and interrupt their business as usual to demand they stop selling arms and military technology to Israel.
Send an urgent message to demand Canada stop arming Israel and push for an immediate ceasefire to your Member of Parliament, the Prime Minister, and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Defense.
Dear [recipient's full name goes here], We are witnessing genocidal violence playing out in Gaza right now. Thousands of Palestinians have been killed, nearly half of them children. With a blockade on water, electricity, fuel and food, a quarter of all buildings razed to the ground, and over a million people displaced, UN experts have denounced Israel's actions as crimes against humanity. Meanwhile, weapons companies across Canada are arming -- and making a fortune off of -- the carnage in Gaza and the massacre of thousands of Palestinians by selling weapons and military technology to Israel. I am calling on you to do two things: to take immediate action to institute an arms embargo on Israel and to ensure Canada pushes for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza. Sincerely,
Script Sample 2 from Palestinian Youth Movement
^This will open up a pre-written email in your chosen email app or site. Fill in the recipient line with the emails of MPs you wish to contact.
Script Sample 3 from CJPME's Email Campaign
^Complete the form to send an email to Prime Minister Trudeau, your local MP, and the leaders of the NDP, Convervatives and Greens. Canada must OPPOSE A SECOND NAKBA and dispossession of the Palestinians in Gaza by pushing for a ceasefire.
Script Sample 3 for mail:
(a mix of mine and a friend's)
I am writing to ask you to take immediate action to stop the genocide Israel is committing against Palestinians in Gaza as well as the onslaught of those in West Bank.
There is blockade on food, water, electricity, fuel, and the use of internationally banned white phosphorus to exterminate Palestinians. Aid is not able to enter Gaza because of this blockade. UN experts have named Israel’s actions as genocide citing numerous war crimes they continually commit.
While over 10k civilians have been martyr’d (4.2k of which are children), Canada has not even been able to NAME such crimes as genocide or call for an official ceasefire. This is not enough.
Canada needs to:
Call an immediate ceasefire to end bloodshed
Send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Institute embargo on all military exports to Israel
Close the embassies, and sanction Israel diplomatically and economically.
FAX (NEW!)
Using faxzero.com is simple, just follow up the steps on the website. No fax machine required! Tell officials your demands and customize your letter by noting their complicity based on their role as a politician or gov official. Or keep it brief and simple, in large legible letters.
Demands could include:
That you are a “Canadian” constituent That you are demanding an IMMEDIATE AND PERMANENT CEASEFIRE IN GAZA; That you demand a total withdrawal of financial (taxpayer) and commercial support and arms for continued occupation in Israel’s 70+ year occupation in Palestine; That it is shameful that [X] is choosing not to speak up for the deaths of more than 11,000 Palestinians, half of whom are children and thousands of others displaced; That Palestinians like all people, deserve life, dignity and justice; That Israel is breaking multiple international laws daily and Canada MUST meet its international commitment to promote and defend human rights under the Geneva Convention; That not putting these actions in place will harm constituents and undo acts of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities in Canada by not protecting the Indigenous peoples of Palestine; That unless there is concrete and everlasting action taken place, that there will be no peace until Palestine is free, and subsequently that you will not be voting for them (if applicable) in the next election.
Sign off with your name, address and postal code (if applicable, furthering that you are a resident on the stolen Indigenous lands otherwise known as “Canada”) Extended fax list: Scott thomson (president of scotiabank) - 416-866-5929 joe biden / whitehouse - 202-456-2461

Strength
Dellivery Class S-260-7 was tasked with delivering an important letter across the battlefield. It had been assigned many parcels between the two regions, but never anything like this. While the conflicts still raged on, diplomats had begun to communicate, and the mail doll was to serve as the emissary to deliver the messages from both sides. S-260-7 however, did not know this at the time. S-260-7 was simply a lowly delivery doll, a tool for the efficiency of transport.
It trudged across the field of operation, keeping the parcel tucked away in its bag, separated off in another sub-pocket of the main compartment away from the other letters. While it didn't know the contents of the letter, it was given a certain level of importance above the others. Letters like these weren't received on a personal basis like most, as they were processed through organizations to be given to their eventual recipient, as opposed to the typical deliveries of missives and packages to families and individuals. S-260-7 knew that if the delicate envelope were breached in any way before its delivery was completed, there would be hell to pay. All the other pieces of mail for delivery were precious and to be protected too, of course, but the procedure was not what was important. Families and individuals usually cared more about receiving their parcels rather than the integrity of what contained them.
As it pressed on further, it heard a series of deep thumps against the ground trailing it. Glancing back, it spotted a bipedal weapon approaching. It watched as the coil array creating what appeared like a mouth arced jagged streaks of energetic plasma across nearby surfaces. An Arges unit, an autonomous close range energy weapon. It picked up its pace as it tried to avoid being caught by the nonselective automaton. The mail doll's legs however were quite small, and it could only carry itself so quickly. It pushed on as quickly as it could as the Arges unit made a trivial effort out of closing distance. S-260-7 doubled over eventually, feeling its momentum take control as it rolled into the mud beneath it. It heard a loud noise behind it as it picked itself back up, and upon looking back, it observed another doll meeting the Arges unit head on. It was a combat doll, which appeared to have tackled the unit, ignoring the electricity arcing about its body. It let loose a punch with its left arm into the array of coils, sending the unit stumbling back. Using the momentary lull, the combat doll turned its head back to look at the mail doll, revealing its crimson eyes, locking with S-260-7's. The mail doll turned away at the sight, shutting its eyelids and carrying itself forward until all was quiet.
Eventually, it reached a place that sounded considerably calmer. When it listened for any noise, it heard nothing. Opening its eyes, it found itself in a clearing illuminated with sunlight diffused through a thick layer of clouds, bathing the environment in a still white light. The orange tone of the falling leaves of the trees were washed out by the ambient white. The path ahead was carved bare to the dry dirt by travel. S-260-7 continued down the path as the silence of the environment left it feeling considerably less panicked than the encounter with the Arges unit.
Eventually, the mail doll reached a round clearing covered in dormant grass and dotted with dried flowers. Sitting in the middle of the clearing, at the base of a solitary tree was a woman. She had healthy fair skin, though mildly stained by soil and blood. More soil and blood painted the loose fitting white dress covering her body, with a tear towards her stomach highlighted by the highest concentration of blood, revealing what appeared to be a long sealed scar underneath. Under her icy blue eyes were dark spots, and from her head hung dark brown hair, unkempt as it messily cascaded onto her shoulders. The woman looked up as S-260-7 as its approach halted.
"Apologies for bringing you here. I felt it was more pleasant than where you were stuck." The woman spoke in a tired voice.
The mail doll placed its hands on the strap of its bag defensively as it took a step back.
The woman flashed a sympathetic expression, "It's okay, you're safe here. Though, you can't be here for long, can you?"
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
I watch S-260-7 twitch as it wakes up, pulled through the panic induced by memory in its dream. This is probably one of the few memories it has. How unfortunate for that memory to be so traumatic. It sits up from its bed, retrieving a sketchbook and a pencil, and proceeds to its desk, where it begins sketching. First, I observe the traces of its pencil strokes, seeing the mail doll create an accurate rendition of the sight of the combat doll glancing back at it, perhaps embellished by the heightened fear I imagine it felt. Once it completes the drawing, it moves onto the next page, where its pencil hovers above the surface of the paper for a few moments. It looks as though the doll had something in mind to draw, but now the image has escaped it.
It stands up once again, applying its uniform, before it looks out the window to find that it is in fact still night time. Being created by the same collective as Soul, I tend to wonder why S-260-7 sleeps, despite almost definitely not needing it. The doll seems to understand this as it proceeds outside its room and quietly up the stairs, to find the opened window which Thread and Soul use to access my roof. As it pokes its head through, it sees Soul's crimson eyes drift to the movement as its head turns to meet the mail doll's gaze. S-260-7 gasps as it tenses up and ducks its head back into the window. It clutches its sketchbook to its chest as it trembles.
"It's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you. Come on up." Soul's voice calls out to the mail doll.
It timidly climbs up and out of the window and onto the roof, seeing Soul lounging casually on the roof under the low light of the moon, and the sliver of orange of the teasing sunrise. In its lap is Thread, laying comfortably across its legs. Soul's cigarette burns a dull orange close to the filter as it stamps out the remains in an ashtray it's brought up to my roof. S-260-7 gingerly sits on the shingles next to Soul, around a meter away.
Soul's gaze turns to the stars for a moment, "You're up early today."
"This doll had a bad dream." The mail doll signs when Soul looks back at it.
Soul gazes on it with sympathy, "Do you wanna talk about it?"
"There was a combat doll in it. It looked like you. It saved this doll from an autonomous weapon. It seemed like a memory. Even though that doll saved it, it was still afraid." After S-260-7 finishes signing, it opens its sketchbook to the sketch of the combat doll.
Soul takes a long glance at the sketch, "Well, I'm an Operator Class, so I can't exactly take credit for saving you, but you don't need to be afraid. The war is over, and I plan to never fight again. One of the few benefits of being reclassified as a person is that I'm allowed to make that choice."
"You're reclassified as a person?" S-260-7 looks at Soul quizzically.
Soul nods, "The collective figured they were doing me a favor. As a 'reward' for my deeds in the war, I was given financial benefits, and reclassified as a person. That also meant that when I was repaired, I was sent to a human hospital. My right arm wasn't properly repaired. It works, sure, but it isn't even as sturdy as a human arm. I have to be really careful."
The mail doll looks to Soul's right hand, which is gently stroking Thread's hair as it gazes on the stars.
"You don't have a name, do you? Not really a name, I mean. My Witch gave me the name 'Soul' because of the personality they saw in me which wasn't present in their previous dolls." Soul gazes at the mail doll's eyes, "No need for a name if you don't have any running connections though. But, you have those connections now, to all of us. I've seen you teaching Cream and Sugar sign, and you deliver mail. How do you feel about the name Rye?"
The mail doll pauses for a few moments in consideration, before it nods its head.
Soul smiles as its gaze drifts back to the stars, "One of the meanings is messenger. I figured that was appropriate."
With the intense fear dispelled, the mail doll scoots closer to Soul, and closer. Eventually, it leans directly up against the combat doll. In response, Soul gently puts its left arm around it, and the three quietly watch the sun rise, as the dark sky full of stars gives way to the golden light of the sun, and the vibrant blue of the daytime sky, painted by a thin layer of clouds.

The Human Supercomputer:
Built, Maintained, and Programmed by Mother Nature
The Brain You Didn’t Earn, But Get to Use Anyway
Ever heard of typoglycemia? No, it’s not a disease—it’s a flex that proves your brain is an unstoppable supercomputer. You can read this perfectly:
👉 "Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae."
Did you struggle? Nope. Your brain didn’t even break a sweat.
That’s because Mother Nature programmed you for maximum efficiency. She didn’t waste time making you read letter by letter like a dumbass. No, she built you to see patterns, adapt instantly, and dominate the competition.
This isn’t magic. It’s evolution’s biggest middle finger to every other species.
The No-Fucks-Given Predator That Rules the Food Chain
Humanity didn’t start at the top.
We were tree-dwelling cowards, terrified to come down because literally everything on Earth was stronger than us.
We had no fangs, no claws, no armor.
But we had one thing no other species did—a brain that wouldn’t quit.
Fast forward a few million years: ✔ Tigers? We turned them into rugs. ✔ Wolves? Now they shit on leashes for us. ✔ Whales? We used them for lamp oil before we got bored and moved on.
Meanwhile, every other species is still doing the same dumb shit they were doing a million years ago.
Humans? We invented nukes, Wi-Fi, and Taco Bell.
That’s why we run this planet.
If It Breathes, We Dominate It
If another species so much as steps up, here’s what happens: ✔ We slap its dick into the dirt. ✔ We burn down its home, AND the trees around it, just to send a message. ✔ We put its offspring in a zoo to perform tricks for us. ✔ We figure out how to eat it—starting with its mountain oysters.
(For the uninitiated, that’s testicles. We deep-fry their balls and charge $12.99 a plate.)
🚨 Rent’s Due, Bitches. 🚨
Your Brain is the Ultimate Cheat Code
You think a lion is scary? We built tanks. You think a shark is dangerous? We drain oceans to build resorts. You think an eagle is majestic? We trained them to carry our mail.
While other species fight to survive, we: ✔ Launch ourselves into space just to flex. ✔ Invent laws that say we "can’t punch each other"—then do it anyway. ✔ Domesticate wild animals, then dress them in sweaters.
Mother Nature didn’t just give us tools—she built us into the tool. Our brain processes patterns, spots weaknesses, and exploits them. That’s why we don’t just survive—we own everything.
Test Your Supercomputer: Can You Read These?
If your brain is as overpowered as I think it is, try these out:
👉 "Olny smrat poelpe can raed tihs." 👉 "Yuo cna gvie a tigrer fngas, but he wlil slitl be in a cgae." 👉 "A torkey deid for yuor Tnakshigvni dinnre, but tehn aigan, so did the Indnias."
(If you just read all of those with zero problems—congrats, you are a goddamn machine.)
Now think about that.
A tiger needs strength to kill. We just made a fucking rifle.
A bear needs claws to defend itself. We just built the M1 Abrams.
A shark rules the ocean. We built boats, drained swamps, and put its cousins in fish tanks.
Your brain is the ultimate weapon. The rest of the animal kingdom is just living in our theme park.
🔥 Final Verdict: Humans Are the Apex Predators That Nature Never Saw Coming
Other species fight to live.
We rewrote the rules and built Wi-Fi.
The universe built us to win.
Any animal that doesn’t like it?
They can suck our reproductive organs.
That’s payback for millions of years of running from their flea-bitten, fang-having asses.

update, and really ai in a nutshell
ok so. Several years ago, when Gmail suddenly introduced the categories thing and split my inbox in three without asking me or providing me a way to opt-out, I stopped doing the things I had always done in order to keep my inbox organized. And I tried my best to train it which emails i wanted to keep in my primary tab. It was a lot of work, a little at a time, and it never worked the way I quite wanted-- it would insist that various mailing lists from ecommerce sites I'd bought from were Important, but conversely when I bought digital goods from other ecommerce sites on a very regular basis it would always banish the "download it here!" emails from my inbox and I would have to go looking for them, every time. It was mildly frustrating, but never bad enough for me to do anything with.
In the last several days since they finally gave me an opt-out for the AI, i've spent a few minutes every day sorting through my giant chaotic inbox, and I've made filters for all my frequent fliers, and while I still have a backlog of eight thousand unread emails they'd formerly sorted for me and now won't, which I'm chipping away at a little at a time with tools ill-suited to it, my incoming email is better-organized than it ever has been.
Which really just goes to show you that anything AI can do, a real person can do much more efficiently and easily. And without the impediment of the thing trying to do it automatically and getting in my way, I can do it much better.
So I guess let that be a lesson to me, to always switch off the auto-sorting of everything. It only makes me lazy and worsens the chaos.

How would they be with a really clumsy and unlucky s/o?
L Lawliet
L would be a mix of amusement and concern.
His quirky personality would find your clumsiness amusing, but he’d also be genuinely concerned for your safety and well-being.
He would probably help you, but in his own unique way.
He might avoid being overly affectionate, instead trying to provide practical solutions, like suggesting a change in your routine or helping you with tasks that require more coordination.
L would probably be more focused on making sure you’re not hurt or that your bad luck doesn’t cause major problems.
He might not show it in the most conventional way, but you’d know he cares.
Light Yagami
Light might initially be annoyed by your clumsiness, but his more calculating side would see it as something he could “fix.”
He might be a bit cold or condescending at times, though he wouldn’t want to show too much irritation.
He’d try to help you in a practical way, perhaps offering advice on how to be more careful or even subtly manipulating situations so you don’t get into trouble.
If he truly cares, though, he’ll offer gentle, even hidden support.
It might take a while for Light to warm up to you completely, but if you make an effort to improve, he’d see it as a challenge and possibly develop affection for you.
Mihael Keehl
Mello would be annoyed by your clumsiness, but his reactions would be more dramatic.
He might find it both amusing and frustrating at the same time, often making snide comments or teasing you about it.
He would protect you in his own way, though it might come with some snarky remarks.
He wouldn’t baby you, but he might start to “save” you from your own misadventures, offering a sense of tough love.
Mello’s care would be wrapped up in sarcasm, but deep down, he’d have a soft spot for your innocence, which might make him more protective over time.
Mail Jeevas
Matt would likely find your clumsiness endearing rather than frustrating.
He’s a laid-back person, so he would laugh it off and even join in with playful teasing.
Matt would be super patient with you, always ready to catch you when you fall or help you when things go wrong.
He’s a bit of a prankster, so expect him to find fun in your accidents, but in a way that doesn’t make you feel bad.
His carefree attitude would be a comfort to you.
He would appreciate your quirky nature and would never make you feel bad about your misfortune.
Nate River
Near would be a bit perplexed by your clumsiness at first, as he’s very precise and methodical.
He might get irritated if you disrupt his quiet time or ruin a carefully planned moment, but he wouldn’t be overly harsh.
Near would likely attempt to help you in practical ways, but with little to no emotional warmth.
He might get you a set of tools or give you advice on how to avoid mishaps.
His caring would be more through efficiency than affection.
His way of caring would come off as distant and analytical.
It might take time for him to fully warm up, but he’d try to help you out in his own pragmatic way.
Misa Amane
Misa would likely find your clumsiness cute and would probably laugh it off.
She’s pretty bubbly and would think it’s endearing rather than frustrating.
Misa would try to help you in a cheerful, supportive way, offering to help you with anything or even trying to make things easier for you.
She might be a bit overbearing, offering too much help at times.
She’d be the most affectionate and reassuring, always making sure you feel okay and that you don’t feel bad about your misfortunes.
She’d love being the one to take care of you.

im obsessed with the line from allers about creepy turian fan mail. love letters that are so sentimental and tender they cross over into frightening. being way too intimate in writing to someone who barely knows them, if at all. it's so fun🌹
A well-structured society built on self-control, service of others, and utter devotion to the cause makes the best soldiers in the galaxy. The most efficient and organised military.
but...as an unforseen consequence, turians have absolutely zero chill.
"As uptight as a turian" is a common galactic phrase for a reason. It's hard for them to come off as casual. More often than not, it results in awkward encounters in their sincere-but-misinformed attempts at befriending the other species.
Their social awareness covers all the appropriate terminology to address your superior, a fellow man in arms, innocent civilians, an unruly enemy, they even have a whole script on addressing a once fellow soldier turned enemy.
But not friends.
It doesn't extend to coming up with good pick-up lines for the hot human at the bar, either.
The lines between "charmingly invested" and "intrusively creepy" tend to blend when it comes to a turian. They end up shooting themselves in the foot by either coming off too strong and intense or too cold and detached, depending on their self-restraint for the day.
All those feelings they keep repressed in order to be the ideal turian model have got to come out somewhere somehow.
Much like we need sunlight and physical touch or our mood inexplicably sours. Turians need to blow off steam every so often in order to remain the epitome of discipline, or they will grow agitated and feral.
And if a cute human celebrity catches their eye, oh, you've earned a loyal turian fan for life. The creepiest war-nerds fans you'll ever have, but immensely devoted.
Making the most hardcore fans you'll ever meet. Their admiration tethering on the edge of obsessing. Their fanmail is shamelessly intrusive and overwhelmingly intimate.
Pouring all of their intensity into this one person that they decided to worship for life. There is determination in their step, head fringes more puffed, talons shinier, shots more precise than ever. A noticeable improvement in their health and performance ever since they started writing you weekly letters.
Greatly detailing the events of their last dream where a batarian group kidnapped you and their team was tasked by the government to rescue the human celebrity, instead of the human military because "turians just do it better"—how you ended up clinging to their arms as they carried you to safety, calling them your hero, looking in awe at their sharp talons, asking if you can touch them. The sensual kiss that followed, your cute pink human tongue, oh so short, their longer blueish one easily covering it whole.
—only for their eyes to snap open, looking up at the ceiling, laying on their bed, alone.
The sound of their purring filling the room whole, they've never heard it that loud before, the vibration in their throat is overwhelmingly intense.
The taste of your lips at the tip of their tongue, their soft sensation ghosting over their hard shell.
As for the reminder of the letter, they mention all their favourite moments in your last interview. They made one of your shots during it their omni-tool background! They're absolutely in love with your new wardrobe. Human fashion is so eyecatching and tantalising, especially the colour you wore in the interview. Did you know its the same colour as their clan tattoo? What a small world, or maybe it's fate? You'd look amazing in anything, actually. Even nude, especially that. Sometimes, you wear really tight shorts and flimsy tops, and they picture a vivid image of the silhouette of your soft body underneath. By the spirits, how are humans so plump?

Experiment 143 (Pt. One)
Pairing: Calvin Evans x female!oc Word Count: 523 Author's Note: 143 is used as a numerical shorthand for "I love you" because of the number of letters in each word. I = 1 letter Love = 4 letters You = 3 letters
Calvin Evans always ran to work.
It was a precise science, like everything else in his life. Seven minutes and twenty-two seconds from his front door - longer if Mrs. Petty's terrier darted into the street again or if he mistimed the crosswalk on Sycamore. He ran with a kind of conviction that would have made a military drill sergeant proud - head down, eyes forward, legs driving like pistons. Calculated. Efficient. Predictable.
Until today.
He didn't see her until the last second - barely more than a flash of floral cotton and windblown hair - before impact. A dull thud, a surprised yelp, and then the unmistakable thwack of envelopes scattering like startled birds across the sidewalk.
He stopped short, staggering a step back.
"Oh no," he muttered, immediately kneeling down. "Are you alright?"
She was already sitting up, wincing slightly, brushing dark curls from her face. Her lipstick was the color of summer cherries, smeared slightly on the corner of her mouth. One elbow was scraped. One knee likely bruised. Her eyes blinked up at him - wide, startled, and undeniably annoyed.
"Well," she said dryly, "that's one way to introduce yourself."
Calvin stared at her, blinking. "You - you're not bleeding excessively," he observed.
"Not yet," she replied, raising a brow. "But if you stand there long enough without helping me up, I might throw one of these envelopes at you. Very hard."
He scrambled to stand and extended a hand. "Sorry. I didn't see you. i take this route every morning and no one is ever-"
"Standing in the way?" she said, accepting his hand and rising gracefully. "I'm new. Moved in yesterday. My name's Rose Carpenter."
"Calvin," he said, and immediately added, "Evans."
They both crouched to gather the scattered mail. Calvin carefully avoided eye contact, though he noticed her perfume - something floral and clean. A name like Rose suited it. He handed her a damp coupon flier.
"Welcome to the neighborhood," he said stiffly.
"Thank you for the...warm welcome," she said, smirking.
Calvin hesitated, mail still in hand. "I'm usually not in the habit of tackling neighbors on the sidewalk."
"I'd hope not," she said, brushing off her skirt and inspecting her knee. "But if this is how you make friends, I'd hate to see how you treat your enemies."
His lips twitched, almost - but not quite - into a smile. "I'm late."
Rose gestured down the street. "I won't keep you. But maybe next time, look up?"
Calvin turned to jog away, paused, then turned back. "If you need anything - tools, a spare umbrella, information on local garbage pickup - I live at 32 Ridgeway. The brown house. Right next door."
Rose looked down at her now slightly crumpled mail, then back at him. "Right next door. I'll keep that in mind, 32."
And then, with a soft, amused shake of her head, she turned and walked back toward her porch, one envelope still fluttering behind her like a forgotten whisper.
Calvin watched her go for precisely two seconds longer than he meant to.
Then he ran. And for the first time in a long time, he didn't care that he was late.

Since Russian troops invaded Ukraine more than three years ago, Russian technology companies and executives have been widely sanctioned for supporting the Kremlin. That includes Vladimir Kiriyenko, the son of one of Vladimir Putin’s top aides and the CEO of VK Group, which runs VK, Russia’s Facebook equivalent that has increasingly shifted towards the regime’s repressive positioning.
Now cybersecurity researchers are warning that a widely used piece of open source code—which is linked to Kiriyenko’s company and managed by Russian developers—may pose a “persistent” national security risk to the United States. The open source software (OSS), called easyjson, has been widely used by the US Department of Defense and “extensively” across software used in the finance, technology, and healthcare sectors, say researchers at security company Hunted Labs, which is behind the claims. The fear is that Russia could alter easyjson to steal data or otherwise be abused.
“You have this really critical package that’s basically a linchpin for the cloud native ecosystem, that’s maintained by a group of individuals based in Moscow belonging to an organization that has this suspicious history,” says Hayden Smith, a cofounder at Hunted Labs.
For decades, open source software has underpinned large swathes of the technology industry and the systems people rely on day to day. Open source technology allows anyone to see and modify code, helping to make improvements, detect security vulnerabilities, and apply independent scrutiny that’s absent from the closed tech of corporate giants. However, the fracturing of geopolitical norms and the specter of stealthy supply chain attacks has led to an increase in questions about risk levels of "foreign" code.
Easyjson is a code serialization tool for the Go programming language and is often used across the wider cloud ecosystem, being present in other open source software, according to Hunted Labs. The package is hosted on GitHub by a MailRu account, which is owned by VK after the mail company rebranded itself in 2021. The VK Group itself is not sanctioned. Easyjson has been available on Github since 2016, with most of its updates coming before 2020. Kiriyenko became the CEO of VK Group in December 2021 and was sanctioned in February 2022.
Hunted Labs’ analysis shared with WIRED shows the most active developers on the project in recent years have listed themselves as being based in Moscow. Smith says that Hunted Labs has not identified vulnerabilities in the easyjson code.
However, the link to the sanctioned CEO’s company, plus Russia’s aggressive state-backed cyberattacks, may increase potential risks, Smith says. Research from Hunted Labs details how code serialization tools could be abused by malicious hackers. “A Russian-controlled software package could be used as a ‘sleeper cell’ to cause serious harm to critical US infrastructure or for espionage and weaponized influence campaigns,” it says.
“Nation states take on a strategic positioning,” says George Barnes, a former deputy director at the National Security Agency, who spent 36 years at the NSA and now acts as a senior advisor and investor in Hunted Labs. Barnes says that hackers within Russia’s intelligence agencies could see easyjson as a potential opportunity for abuse in the future.
“It is totally efficient code. There’s no known vulnerability about it, hence no other company has identified anything wrong with it,” Barnes says. “Yet the people who actually own it are under the guise of VK, which is tight with the Kremlin,” he says. “If I’m sitting there in the GRU or the FSB and I’m looking at the laundry list of opportunities… this is perfect. It’s just lying there,” Barnes says, referencing Russia’s foreign military and domestic security agencies.
VK Group did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment about easyjson. The US Department of Defense did not respond to a request for comment about the inclusion of easyjson in its software setup.
“NSA does not have a comment to make on this specific software,” a spokesperson for the National Security Agency says. “The NSA Cybersecurity Collaboration Center does welcome tips from the private sector—when a tip is received, NSA triages the tip against our own insights to fully understand the threat and, if corroborated, share any relevant mitigations with the community.” A spokesperson for the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which has faced upheaval under the second Trump administration, says: “We are going to refer you back to Hunted Labs.”
GitHub, a code repository owned by Microsoft, says that while it will investigate issues and take action where its policies are broken, it is not aware of malicious code in easyjson and VK is not sanctioned itself. Other tech companies’ treatment of VK varies. After Britain sanctioned the leaders of Russian banks who own stakes in VK in September 2022, for example, Apple removed its social media app from its App Store.
Dan Lorenc, the CEO of supply chain security firm Chainguard, says that with easyjson, the connections to Russia are in “plain sight” and that there is a “slightly higher” cybersecurity risk than those of other software libraries. He adds that the red flags around other open source technology may not be so obvious.
“In the overall open source space, you don’t necessarily even know where people are most of the time,” Lorenc says, pointing out that many developers do not disclose their identity or locations online, and even if they do, it is not always possible to verify the details are correct. “The code is what we have to trust and the code and the systems that are used to build that code. People are important, but we’re just not in a world where we can push the trust down to the individuals,” Lorenc says.
As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has unfolded, there has been increased scrutiny on the use of open source systems and the impact of sanctions upon entities involved in the development. In October last year, a Linux kernel maintainer removed 11 Russian developers who were involved in the open souce project, broadly citing sanctions as the reason for the change. Then in January this year, the Linux Foundation issued guidance covering how international sanctions can impact open source, saying developers should be cautious of who they interact with and the nature of interactions.
The shift in perceived risk is coupled with the threat of supply chain attacks. Last year, corporate developers and the open source world were rocked as a mysterious attacker known as Jia Tan stealthily installed a backdoor in the widely used XZ Utils software, after spending two years diligently updating it without any signs of trouble. The backdoor was only discovered by chance.
“Years ago, OSS was developed by small groups of trusted developers who were known to one another,” says Nancy Mead, a fellow of the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute. “In that time frame, no one expected a trusted developer of being a hacker, and the relatively slower pace provided time for review. These days, with automatic release, incorporation of updates, and the wide usage of OSS, the old assumptions are no longer valid.”
Scott Hissam, a senior member of technical staff also from the Carnegie Software Engineering Institute, says there can often be consideration about how many maintainers and the number of organizations that work on an open source project, but there is currently not a “mass movement” to consider other details about OSS projects. “However, it is coming, and there are several activities that collect details about OSS projects, which OSS consumers can use to get more insight into OSS projects and their activities,” Hissam says, pointing to two examples.
Hunted Lab’s Smith says he is currently looking into the provenance of other open source projects and the risks that could come with them, including scrutinizing countries known to have carried out cyberattacks against US entities. He says he is not encouraging people to avoid open source software at all, more that risk considerations have shifted over time. “We’re telling you to just make really good risk informed decisions when you're trying to use open source,” he says. “Open source software is basically good until it's not.”

For a while now, I've been trying to muster up the wherewithal to write down what's going on now that Trump is back in the White House. This is because I realized, after his first term and we had four years away from him, I had forgotten a good chunk of what had actually happened. So I want to better record stuff, mostly for myself.
Because I want to point to things explaining why we should never trust these types of people. Republicans, conservatives, grifters and more. I know these people aren't harmless, but I always just remember "they're dangerous" and not the details. So, this is mostly for myself.
Musk has defunded USAID, CFPB, many other things, and now the IRS. As we go into tax season.
Someone has already pieced together that the firings don't have anything to do actually making the government efficient. Like, we knew that from the start, but someone made a graph basically confirming it.
Trump also gutted the FAA, and we had plane crashes not more than a week later.
The White House Twitter account basically called Trump "king" by saying he got rid of congestion traffic or something and saying "Long live the King!"
He's been questioning birthright citizenship. Congressional Republicans are going to try to gut Medicare coverage. All of them intend to go after the Department of Education.
They've been going after "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" of course, or DEI, because I know that acronym will be forgotten by the time this is over. It's just a gamergate tactic to distract from their racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.
I'm not explicity writing this as a call to action. I know others are aware, I'm certainly aware, and I know there are people trying their hardest to stop this with what tools they have.
But still, whoever needs to hear it, take a breath, remain calm. Call or e-mail your reps. House and Senate republicans are being swayed by what people are telling (screaming at?) them. Be polite, of course, it's probably an intern there. But tell them, they need to hear and represent you. Organize if you have the ability. Be safe, be secure.
Courts have blocked many of Trumps executive orders. I know it's been difficult not to make institutions comply in advance, but some people have gotten them to walk it back.
The bigger threat is Musk, right now. People are divesting from Tesla and his other companies, there's been a push to move from Twitter to bsky. Especially during November, but also after he pulled that double nazi salute.
If anyone needs to hear anything, my wish, if you will, is that after all of this, we don't let them escape consequence. We can't. They're tearing apart services, letting people die, because they are literally trying to line their own pockets.
So after Trump and Musk are out, we can't just trust the system will work. We'll need to actively be pushing people to following through with consequences.
I don't know how to end this. Again, this is mostly for myself. All I'll try to do is reassure people that other people are trying to stop this, others are fighting. Just do what you can, even if it is just calling or e-mailing your reps, donating to a friend in trouble, etc.

Fixer Upper
Catori x Fem!Reader

Summary: Catori needs you to fix her snack rack again.
Warnings: SMUT. That's it, I think?
The day starts like any other. Your shrill alarm clock startles you awake at seven in the morning and you rub the sleep from your eyes before getting dressed, deciding to wear your Civil Corps uniform today with the jacket unzipped, a plain white t-shirt underneath. You make your way out to your workshop, but before you start trying to knock out some early morning commissions, you check your mail, and that's when your plans for the day change. Like so many recent days, Catori needs your help fixing something up at the Golden Goose.
Nobody bothers to ask why you keep taking commissions from a woman who hardly ever pays with actual money, instead thanking you for your hard work with tokens for her game center and swearing she'll have the money to actually pay you with soon. They all assume you do it out of the goodness of your heart -- and, sure, that's part of it, definitely. The reputation you've built in Sandrock over the past year speaks for itself; reliable, efficient, empathetic, you've made a name for yourself as someone who just likes to help out where you can.
It's a little different when it comes to Cat.
You really did just start out wanting to help your fellow Sandrocker! Really, you did. The more time you spend with the older woman, though, the more that desire to help turned into a different kind of desire entirely.
Simply put, you desire her. You've always had a thing for older women in general, now that you think of it, but you also have just come to really enjoy Catori specifically. She works hard despite the challenges a place like Sandrock constantly presents, and she genuinely wants to make people happy with her endeavors. She perseveres no matter what, and even when she's discouraged, all it takes are some supportive words from you to relight that fire you've come to love seeing in her.
You haven't found a way to express these feelings other than the occasional flirtation, something you don't think Catori's actually picked up on -- or if she has, she hasn't reciprocated, which, honestly, she probably wouldn't. Oh well. A little harmless flirting never hurt anyone, and if she were uncomfortable with it, you're confident she'd let you know.
On your way into town with a backpack filled with the materials needed to fix the snack rack in the game center again and your tool belt, you spot Grace walking in the opposite direction. Making eye contact, you smile and give her a small wave as you get closer, and she returns the smile readily.
"Hey, you. Don't tell me -- On your way to the Golden Goose?" The blonde says with a knowing look, provoking an eyebrow raise from you.
"How'd you figure that one out?"
"You're in there almost every day these days," she points out with a small laugh. "If I didn't know any better," she adds a little too slyly for your liking, "I'd think you've taken a liking to our resident entrepreneur."
"Yeah, yeah," you respond with a chuckle as you begin to move on. "Get back to the saloon; I hear there are some omelets that need mutilating."
You can feel the tips of your ears beginning to warm, but you're quick to shoot back. "You're too observant for your own good, you know that?"
She laughs louder as she passes by you, reaching up to squeeze your shoulder. "Good luck, firecracker. And stop by the Civil Corps office soon, yeah? I posted some commissions and you're so much faster than the boys."
"Careful, I know where you live!" She jokingly calls out over her shoulder as you both walk away from each other.
Not long after that, you push open the door to the Golden Goose. Catori's shuffling some papers around on her desk, but when she sees you enter, her face lights up with a warm smile as she stands.
"There's my favorite builder," she greets, rounding the corner of her desk on her way to you. Something on your person catches her eye and her gaze lowers as she reaches out to straighten your tool belt that had become a little crooked during your walk here. Your breath hitches at the feeling of her fingers brushing against the zipper of your pants before she returns her hands to her sides. "There, that's better."
"I-- Thanks," you barely manage to get out, warmth creeping up your neck against your will. Clearing your throat, you move on both figuratively and literally, making your way to the broken snack rack in the next room. "So what happened this time? The Punch-A-Tron isn't enough for Heidi anymore?"
You can hear Catori snickering behind you and you smile to yourself, pleased to get a laugh out of her. She deserves to be happy. You enjoy being the one to make it happen.
You're already couching down and slinging your backpack off your shoulder when you hear the woman respond. "It, uh, was an accident, actually. I was on my way to restock it and I just tripped."
This causes you to pause, looking over your shoulder, concern clearly painted across your face as you search her body for injuries. "Are you okay? That had to have been a pretty hard fall."
"Oh, me? I'm fine; barely a scratch on me! Promise," she's quick to reassure you, leaning against the nearby game machine. You examine her for a second longer than you probably need to before returning your attention to your backpack to unload the materials. "But you're sweet to ask."
You're blushing again. Thank the Light your face is turned away. "Well, this shouldn't take too long, at least."
And it doesn't. In no time at all, as you and Catori converse about current events and her son who'd just received the model train you'd built for him, the snack rack is as good as new. Standing, you stretch a bit, the action tugging your shirt out of its spot tucked into your pants, revealing the slightest sliver of an abdomen well-defined from long hours spent walking, working, fighting. You just barely catch Catori's eyes trained on it before she meets your gaze.
"Can I be honest?" She asks, an uncharacteristic nervousness to her tone.
"'Course. Always."
She chews on her bottom lip for a moment, and your eyes are drawn to the movement. You swallow.
"I kinda... sorta... broke the rack on purpose."
Your eyes snap back up, brows furrowing in confusion. "What? Why?"
"I just-- I like having you around, okay? We've spent a lot of time together lately, you and I, and... You're really spectacular, Y/N. You do so much for this town, for me, so much you don't have to do at all. And not even just that -- You're sweet, and smart, and funny..." There's a pause, almost as if she's trying to decide whether or not to say whatever she was going to say next. "... and beautiful. Inside and out. You're kinda the whole package. I can see why that Nia girl's so taken with you."
You're stunned for more reasons than one. For a moment, you just stand there, your grip on your backpack loosening. "First of all, Nia and I are just friends."
"Really? I coulda sworn I heard you two were a thing."
Clearly there are some folks you're going to have to speak to after this. "She's like my sister. Seriously, I think my parents would've adopted her a long time ago if they could've."
You drop your pack on the ground and step into Catori's space. She's taller than you; you've always loved that about her. "You don't have to break things to keep my attention, Cat. It's always been on you anyway."
The way Catori looks down at you after this has your heart rate picking up speed. Before you register what's happening, her hands curl into fists around both sides of your Corps jacket before tugging you into a kiss that feels like she's been holding back from this for quite some time. It already starts out passionate but it quickly grows heated as well, and as Catori slips her tongue past your parted lips with a sigh of contentment, she turns you, pinning you against the game machine behind you. You slide your tongue against hers with a moan, one hand reaching up to tangle your fingers in her hair while your other one grips her hip.
Breathless, she breaks the kiss to trail hot, open-mouthed kisses along your jawline, down your neck. She tugs your jacket and shirt collar down enough to expose your shoulder, and as soon as her mouth reaches it, she begins to suck a possessive mark onto your skin.
"Shit," you gasp, your grip tightening in her hair, causing her to groan against your shoulder. As she pulls away to admire her handiwork, her knee nudges your thighs apart and presses firmly against your crotch, causing you to suck in another breath. "Ca-- Cat, someone could walk in."
"Let them. I've been waitin' way too long to touch you like this," she husks. You've never heard her voice so low and it's more than enough to convince you to let this woman do whatever the hell she wants to you.
"Yeah, okay," you agree eagerly, your hand leaving Catori's hair to slide down her chest, your other hand joining it to begin unbuttoning her shirt.
With a giggle, her hands grasp your hips, guiding them back and forth until you're grinding against her thigh pushed up against your cunt. "That's my girl."
The sound you let out at that is downright desperate, and now you don't even need the help of her hands to keep rolling your hips into her thigh. Her shirt is significantly unbuttoned when you become too impatient to keep going, instead reaching underneath the fabric to roughly tug her bra up over breasts you've been fantasizing about holding in your hands for ages. As your palms brush against her nipples, she pushes her chest into your groping hands with a shuddering moan.
"You're needy, huh? Let me take care of you like you've been takin' care of me, sweet girl," she whispers in your ear, her breath hot and heavy, and immediately afterward her lips are on yours again, her tongue pushing into your mouth and pulling a groan from your throat. You pinch her nipples and her thigh presses harder against your bucking hips.
There's an urgency to both of your actions, the culmination of weeks of want all leading up to this. Trapped between Catori and the game machine behind you, there's no place you'd rather be, no one you'd rather be doing this with, no one you'd rather be with in general.
Her teeth are buried in your neck and her hand has just slipped underneath your shirt when your hips still, your thighs tightening around hers. "Fuck, Cat -- I'm cumming--"
As fast as her hand had slipped underneath your shirt, she shoves it down your pants to rub circles around your wet, swollen clit. "That's it, baby, cum for me."
You ride out your high on Catori's hand until you've finally come down, panting. She rests her forehead against yours, breathing just as heavily. When she pulls her hand out of your pants, her fingers are glistening with your juices. She makes sure your eyes are on her before she puts them in her mouth, sucking the cum from them with a satisfied moan as her eyes flutter shut. The sight of her takes away any breath you had left.
As soon as she's done, she kisses you, her tongue sliding between your lips. You can taste yourself on it, and just as things start getting heated again, she pulls away.
"Come back." As you speak, your hand leaves her breast to pull her back in by the back of her head. She gives in for a moment before breaking the kiss again.
She laughs a little at the disappointed whine that leaves your throat. "As much as I'd love to go another round, I do still got a business to run, pretty girl. And so do you."
You sigh. "Yeah, yeah." Slowly and very unhappily, you fix Catori's clothes before moving onto your own. She steps away from you and watches as you sling your backpack back over your shoulder and start heading toward the door.
"Blue Moon tonight?" You throw over your shoulder, a hopeful look in your eye.
Catori smiles, bending down to press a quick kiss to your lips. "You got it."
You return the smile before turning to head out the door and back to your workshop.

Users can also now apply a custom portion of their available accrued credit monthly– i.e., if the cost of features is $5.97 every month, you can choose to cover only a portion of the cost of features with your credit.
Users who have recently canceled a Subscription no longer have to wait until the payment period expires to create a new Subscription.
To access Pillowfort Premium, click on the “PF Premium” icon located in the left-hand sidebar. This page will allow you to convert your legacy donations to Pillowfort premium, review & edit your subscriptions, and more.
Premium Image Upload Limit Increase: Good news! We’ve raised the limit for Premium Image Uploads to 6MB (formerly 4MB), at no extra cost! We may raise the limit further depending on how the subscriptions service performs and how our data fees fare.
Premium Subscription Landing Page & Frames Preview: We improved what users who do not have a Premium Subscription see on the Subscription management page to provide more information about the Premium features available. This includes the ability to preview all premium frames available.
New Premium Frame: We’ve released a new premium avatar frame! We hope you like it. We also have more premium avatar frames in the works that will be released later this month.

Bug Fixes/Misc Improvements
Some users were not receiving confirmation e-mails when their Pillowfort Premium Subscription was successfully charged. This should now be fixed. Please let us know if you are still not receiving those e-mails.
Related to the above bug, some users who were using their credit balance in Subscriptions were not seeing their credit balance being properly updated to reflect the credit used in those Subscriptions. We have now synced these Subscriptions, so you should see a decrease in your account’s credit balance if you are using that credit in a Subscription.
Fixed a bug where users were unable to delete their accounts in certain scenarios.
Fixed bug that displayed errors on the log-in page incorrectly.
Made improvements to how post images load on Pillowfort, to reduce image loading errors and improve efficiency for users with slow web connections.
Fixed a bug causing the checkmark on avatar frame selection in Settings to display improperly.

We have made a small update to our ToS to specify that “deepfakes” and other digitally-altered pornographic images of real people are considered involuntary pornography and thus prohibited.
And that’s all for today! With this update out, our team will now be working full steam on post drafts, post scheduling queuing, and the progressive mobile app! Be sure to keep checking back on our Pillowfort Dev Blog for further status updates on upcoming features.

One-Handed Eden (Sagrada Reset 5) - Prologue
[INDEX]
A short-haired girl walked outside the window.
Asai Kei looked outside because the girl resembled Souma Sumire. But looking at her only from behind, he could already tell they weren't remotely similar. Different height, different ears, different walk. The hair was the only thing they had in common.
With a jolly rhythm, the girl hopped through the streets in mid-September, when the summer was finally ending. She was visibly having a good time. Thinking about what could have happened to her, Kei brought his coffee cup to his mouth. He had ordered hot coffee for the time in a good while, but it still wasn't the season for that.
"Long story short,"
The voice of a restrained woman guided Kei's eyes back to the café's interior.
A woman in a black suit sat on his opposite seat. She appeared to be in her late twenties. Her makeup was minimal and discreet, and she didn't wear any accessories. She seemed to be a cautious woman who avoided attention.
She went by "Sakuin", a codename meaning index. Kei didn't know her real name. All he knew about her was that she was among the upper echelon of the Management Bureau and had the necessary authority to access large banks of information on abilities.
"The Bureau has accepted your request. You are the Service Club member in charge of investigating her ability.", Sakuin spoke with the clear and articulate tone of a voice mail message.
Kei peered intently at Sakuin's eyes.
He caught a glimpse of bafflement there, but it could have been Kei's own bafflement reflected in her eye.
(I wasn't expecting to be granted permission this easily.)
It's been three days since Asai Kei contacted Sakuin.
Desperate to learn the details of a woman's ability, he called Sakuin's phone.
Sakuin didn't answer positively at the time. The implicit message of her words was "I'll ask my boss, but don't expect anything". Kei was ready to learn it through alternative means, but today, Sakuin called him and he received an effortless permission.
Things were going too well for comfort. He couldn't tell what the Bureau was thinking. But he couldn't deny he was pleased with the outcome.
"Thank you for indulging me.", Kei lightly bowed his head.
Sakuin denied credit.
"This permission wasn't granted for your sake. The Bureau also seeks detailed intel on her ability. And your ability is perfect for a game of Spot the Differences."
"Spot the Differences.", Kei parroted Sakuin.
An apt description considering the nature of the target ability.
In a hospital in Sakurada, there was a woman who never wakes up. She had been dreaming the same stable dream for a long while. Also, she had the ability to rewrite her dream to her liking and invite other people to it. A different way to phrase it would be saying she had the ability to use her dream to create a simulated reality.
In her dream, she created another world identical to the real one.
"We want you to enter her world after a Reset. By spending your day exactly the way you did in the real world, you will investigate the degree of similarity between the dream world and reality, and if there are divergences, why they occur."
Hence,the Spot the Differences mention.
He would search for where two worlds differed.
"Understood. May I begin immediately?", Kei nodded.
"No. Her sickroom is special, so there is a somewhat lengthy amount of paperwork to file with the hospital. We have informal permission from the person in charge, but the protocols are far from sorted."
"Protocols.", Kei parroted Sakuin again.
He considered repetition an efficient conversation tool. But at the same time, he didn't consider efficiency to be a desirable quality for dialogue. But a talk with a Bureau worker was one of the rare situations where a high-schooler should prioritize efficiency.
Sakuin lowered her gaze, mildly conflicted.
"In short, we will need to enumerate all possible problems and write you a manual for how to handle them. Your inquiry period is expected to be on next week's Saturday and Sunday.
"Understood. No problems with me."
Kei took his coffee to his mouth once more and smiled.
"I have to say I'm a bit surprised."
"About the permission?"
"That too, but also about meeting you one-on-one."
"I'm under the Bureau's surveillance, naturally."
"Even then, I didn't expect a single message to get you to appear."
Two years ago, Kei confronted the Bureau to extract information from her.
Sakuin smiled with knitted brows, making the weird expression look more like a frown.
"It was by my own request."
"Oh? Why did you want to meet me?"
"I have a personal question."
A phrase that did mesh with the usual inorganic tone of the Bureau workers.
Sakuin sighed. Quietly enough that it might have not been a sigh at all. Another improper gesture for a Bureau worker.
"Why do you wish to enter the dream world?"
The dream world. A world created by a woman's ability.
Kei sought a world identical to reality but not real.
He closed his eyes briefly. The heat of the coffee remained in his mouth.
His motive came about the previous month—On August 28th, the day a dead girl was resurrected.
Souma Sumire. Kei met her again atop the tetrapods.
—————————————————————————–
The lower portion of the sky was turning red.
The air around the tetrapods sunk in reddish-orange, re-enacting the scene of April 8th two years before, when he first met Souma Sumire.
(Too little, too late.), Kei internally sighed.
Things were no longer the same they were two years before. There was no turning back. Asai Kei's relationship to Souma Sumire, and to Haruki Misora, changed completely.
Nonetheless, Souma Sumire looked the same she did two years prior, and sported the same smile. With the same composed and unshakable confidence in her heart. Kei stared at her intently, actively trying not to break eye contact.
"What are your next plans?", he asked.
Souma Sumire died two years ago. Then, the world within a photo was restored by an ability and Kei brought her to the outside world. He wasn't sure if it would be accurate to say she's back to life.
"Your family and previous acquaintances think you're dead. There's a death certificate with your name and a grave with your bones in it. You're dead in the eyes of the law and the rules of the universe. I can't imagine you'll be able to live a normal life like this."
"Yeah, I won't."
"What will you do next?"
She shrugged, still smiling.
Like that didn't matter. Like everything she saw was not worth her time. Kei didn't know any other14-year-old who nailed this attitude as well as she did.
"I'll find a way."
It was easy to agree. Trusting Souma Sumire demanded no explanation.
But he still believed that was the time to go over everything that needed confirmation.
"Can you be more specific?"
"Aww, are you worried about me?"
"Obviously. I'm the one who brought you back to life, you're a friend I care about a lot, and you're still 14. That's a lot of reasons to worry."
She snickered quietly.
Mildly flattered, slightly glad.
"Oh, right. You're two years older than me now. Turning 16 in October, was it?"
Her smile made Kei smile.
"You're always dodging the topic."
"Isn't that how you like your conversations? Evasively running circles around the point like a school of migratory fish."
She was right, but now wasn't the time for this dance.
The sunset didn't stop for them. It was already disappearing behind the western houses. The night approached from the eastern side of the sky. No one can hinder the flow of time.
"I want you to live like a normal girl, as much as possible. For you to return to your parents' house and go to school every day."
Souma gently closed her eyes.
"You think that's possible?"
"If the Bureau feels like it, they could erase your death from the past. I, for one, don't exist outside Sakurada."
Kei came to the city—Sakurada—four years before. The Bureau wiped clean all evidence of Kei's previous life outside. But as long as he remained in Sakurada, he was allowed the life of a normal high school freshman.
"Not a chance. I don't want the Bureau to find out about me any time soon.", she refused.
"Because you'll be a caged witch?"
"Yeah. I don't want to be incorporated into the system just yet."
The witch. A woman who, like Souma, had the ability to know the future.
She was stripped of her name, kept under the Bureau's surveillance, and had to spend almost 30 years alone.
That's how valuable of an ability Future Sight was. It was worth the price of taking all forms of freedom away from a woman and reducing her to a feature of the system.
"Do you think you can make me normal without the Bureau finding out?", she asked with a taunting smile.
Kei didn't feel up to the task, but nodded anyway.
"I have an idea."
There was still much he didn't know, but he had an idea.
Kei devised a way to let Souma Sumire be an ordinary girl after being dead for two years and revived that day.
"Souma, why don't you and your family move away from Sakurada?"
Outside the city, people lose their memories pertaining to abilities
They were replaced that most natural and convenient memories where superpowers didn't exist.
(Souma died and was revived by an ability. But those memories will be replaced. Because it takes abilities to raise the dead. All memories of Souma's death will be altered.)
"If you go outside Sakurada, your death will be no more. It should disappear even from your own memories."
That was the best way to restore Souma Sumire's normality.
"Are you sure that's going to work? What could the memories of my death even be replaced with?", she tilted her head.
She had a point about the excess of unknown variables. Besides, there was a more direct level of danger in sending out the girl revived by an ability.
Following through with this was practically a gamble.
"But Souma, you know whether this will work."
This conversation should not be necessary. Souma had the ability to see the future. Logically, she had been aware of the outcome of Kei's plan the whole time.
"Tell me. Will you be able to be normal outside Sakurada?"
If it worked, that would leave the Souma revival case solved for the foreseeable future.
If it didn't, he would have to come up with a new solution.
But despite his expectations, her answer was:
"It's a secret."
Kei sighed internally.
"Souma, this is very serious."
"I know. 'It's a secret' is the most serious and sincere answer I can give at this point."
"Why?"
"I made the decision based on the future. The optimal answer in order to reach the future I seek is not saying anything here."
Her answer was unfair.
Kei didn't know how to argue against the Future Sight user when she said something was for a better future.
"Fine. I'll find out on my own, then."
(I need to look for something that can simulate the future to verify what happens if Souma leaves Sakurada.)
"You don't need to bother yourself with me.", Souma snickered uncomfortably.
Kei disagreed.
"I do. I'm the one who resurrected you."
He needed to find the proper means to give her a comfortable life.
But Souma's negative was firm.
"You didn't. I got myself reborn. You were just manipulated. You have nothing to feel responsible for."
"Your plans and machinations don't matter. I decided to do this and carried it out. If you regret your resurrection, that's my responsibility."
She appeared confused.
Her gesture looked somewhat childish. With her tilted head and smile, she looked like a younger girl. Like a normal fourteen-year-old.
"You do you, then. I'll still consider everything my own responsibility. You'll still consider everything your responsibility. We'll stick up for each other, I like it better this way."
Her tone was cheerful. Her intentions, in usual Souma Sumire fashion, were obscure. As unpredictable as a present inside a wrapped box. The appealing exterior caught people's attention without letting them know what was inside. Opening the box required ripping off the pretty paper.
"If you consider yourself responsible, I want you to promise one thing.", Kei asked to dig his claws into the wrapping paper.
"What?"
"Don't die on me without permission again."
(And make your life as happy as it can be, if that's an option.)
Souma peered into his eyes.
"What makes you think I'd die?"
"Not even you can live a proper life without anyone finding out."
(What can you even get bread and a roof when you're legally dead and everyone remembers you dying? It's all so unrealistic.)
"I can tell that you came back to life for a single purpose. You seem really unstable. Like you're about to die again once you're done with that goal of yours."
He couldn't allow Souma to die a second time.
Kei looked over the sky.
The sun had sunk while he wasn't paying attention. Deep ultramarine was covering the city. The early evening was over before noticed it started. The sunset slipped past him like a breeze, leaving nothing behind.
"It's all in your head. How could I die after got to be with you again?"
Her voice saying this was beautiful like the sunset, and slipped past him leaving nothing behind.
—————————————————————————–
The goal was to make Souma Sumire into an ordinary girl.
To give her the most peaceful life she can have.
Asai Kei was determined to test what would happen if he took Souma outside Sakurada.
If everything goes as he hopes, she'll lose her knowledge of abilities, forget her death, and become a normal 14-year-old. If things go wrong—Kei didn't know what would happen. He couldn't bring himself to imagine it.
That's why he needed to test the outcome in the safest environment possible. He searched for a simulation device for precise and accurate experiments.
And what he found was a world created by an ability.
A dream world, identical to reality but not real. Kei decided to use this fake world, with the cooperation of its dreamer, to carry out the experiments necessary to give Souma a comfortable life.
The red light of the setting sun remained in the inner side of his eyelids. Kei slowly opened his eyes. He saw Sakuin's face, looking directly at him.
─ Why do you wish to enter the dream world?
He needed to answer her question. He chose his words cautiously.
"Curiosity. An ability that creates a whole world, even if just within a dream, catches my interest."
"Why?"
"I mean, it's so godlike. I always wished I were God."
There was no lie in his words. Obviously no truth either. He couldn't afford to bring up Souma Sumire's name at that moment.
Sakuin noticed Kei was hiding something, but didn't comment about it. Instead, she asked:
"What comes to mind when you hear the word transcription?"
(Transcription?)
A sudden word. He was at a loss.
"Nothing in particular. If I had to pick something, it'd be manuscripts of religious texts."
The holy texts of many religions are manually transcribed scriptures. The focus went to them because they were ancient books that needed copies.
Sakuin watched his face closely, but eventually nodded.
"Fine answer. Well then, I don't have anything left to say."
She stood up, leaving half of her coffee still in the cup.
She put her chair back and spoke to the sitting Kei.
"Lastly, a warning for you."
"What is it?"
"My superior is interested in you. Needless to say, he knows what you did to the witch. You wouldn't have gotten the permission to work in this case if he hadn't pushed for it."
Interested. An unpleasant word. It conveyed that the boss' opinion of Kei was not neutral without telling if it was positive or negative. He acknowledged that it was the deserved consequences of his actions, but couldn't imagine anything non-disastrous coming out of having the attention of a Bureau higher-up.
"And?"
"You're under watch. Don't try to pull the ridiculous tricks you did two years ago. That's all."
Kei attentively smirked.
"Yes, I know. Thank you for the warning."
"I'll message you later with a detailed schedule. Goodbye until then."
She walked away. Kei watched from behind as she left.
Sakuin. The Bureau worker with access to intel about abilities.
(I have no idea how the Bureau is structured, but there's no way her superior isn't very influential. And I'd rather not get myself involved with the Bureau big-shots. I already have too much in my hands with Souma's case.), he grumbled in his mind.
He naturally couldn't afford to let anyone hear his unspoken words.
