And the target of that? Oh yeah, Jackson/Holt.

I feel like people really forget that at the end of the day gen 1 monster high WAS a narrative about race and acceptance. That extends to Jackson/Holt.

Jackson Jekyll’s mom always interested me because I always had a headcanon that Jekyll or Hyde side would come out more depending on the kid.

Like I imagine his mom’s Hyde side would come out more with Jackson, especially when he was younger, because she’s more worried about him being harmed and wants to protect him. I especially know she came out after the whole Ghoul’s Rule bullshit cause there’s no way her son was arrested, almost put to death, and she just sat still. Like you know the headmistresses office must’ve sounded crazy the next morning.

And I love to think his mother’s Jekyll side is out more when Holt is there, mainly just to keep him calm and dote on him. You know she definitely tells everyone at her job about her babies music!

I was rewatching Monster High: The Movie (2022) cause the sequel's coming out next week and upon rewatch, the fucking signs that Komos was actually Hyde's son not from the writing but from the COSTUME DESIGN for him was so striking to me that I'm pissed I didn't realize sooner.

Not only does he have the glasses, sideswept bangs and general human appearance of Jackson (minus the horns, I think in this universe Komos's mom was like a centaur or something, would explain why he's still so human-looking besides the horns), but there's nods to Jackson and Holt specifically all throughout his outfits in the movie.

(Also for the sake of ease I'm referring to the teacher as Komos cause typing Hyde Jr. or something constantly is gonna drive me nuts)

First, there's his main outfit which we see across the film as well as in promotional images, and YOU CANNOT FUCKING TELL ME the posing for his promo pic wasn't an intentional nod to Jackson LIKE LOOK AT THIS SHIT!!

The main thing that strikes me is the inversion of the yellow/gold and blue with Komos's tie and shirt, also the fact the colors are significantly desaturated in comparison to Jackson's flashy yellow and blue. My interpretation of this is that it's representative of the bad-guy/villainous interpretation Komos represents, in comparison to Jackson/Holt which seem to be a rare good-guy/positive interpretation of Jekyll and Hyde. It's like, yes this is the Jekyll/Hyde guy of this gen, his outfits are nods to G1 but is otherwise an entirely different character than Jackson/Holt. Which I mean, I do respect the writers for not having Komos be this gen's Holt Hyde and just as "Hyde's son," I feel like separating the two (three??) characters is and was the best decision. Just two different interpretations of the "descendant of Jekyll and Hyde" thing.

Another part of the decision to go with Jackson's more traditionally nerdy or professional type of fashion style is interesting to me. Komos does not want to be perceived as his Jekyll half, he wants to just be Hyde, hence why he refers to himself as Hyde's son not Jekyll and Hyde's son. And yet, it's like he can't deny his human Jekyll side. To be honest Jekyll's only referenced a few times in the movie (which okay, Hyde's the monster half, I get that, but you'd think he'd be a little more important yeah??) so it makes sense they're focusing on Hyde more but I did find it an interesting decision.

Next there's THIS OUTFIT which on rewatch made me audibly point like that soyjak meme like "THAT'S A REFERENCE TO JACKSON AND HOLT CAUSE OF THE YIN YANG DUAL COLOR SHIT"

Red and blue are mainly Holt's colors, but Holt's signature outfit's shirt is also dual-toned, split through the middle.

It's just with Komos, there's less of an emphasis on the yin-yang thing Jackson & Holt had in their interpretation of Jekyll & Hyde -- he's unbalanced in comparison to them -- hence it's not a black and white cardigan. Also, THE BOWTIE! Can't get more obvious with the Jackson nods than that.

There's also this outfit I wanted to mention, the one he wears during the Founders' dinner toward the end of the movie. Notice It's fully red-toned, where his initial outfit was mainly blue-toned, and the cardigan showed the transition between. It's like at first, he's studious and mellow-natured with a bit of flare but nothing too crazy -- Jekyll. Then when he's wearing the cardigan, he asks Clawdeen about her research, almost insisting she provide him the information she's gathered because of his desperation to lose the duality going on with him. And finally, at the end, he takes the potion his father made, fully embracing Hyde and abandoning Jekyll once and for all.

That's pretty much all I wanted to mention regarding the outfits, but I remember when I first watched the movie, I was severely disappointed that Jackson/Holt were basically confirmed to not be making a return in this generation (or at least in the live-action films but I imagine it'd be pretty confusing to have two characters represent the same specific monster character in the same gen). They were a really underutilized character concept outside of Ghouls Rule, and I feel like especially with Clawdeen being half human in this version that they could've been friends or something!

Maybe Jackson/Holt could've served as the antagonist of the film in Komos's position, but not out of malice, moreso misguidance. Holt was kinda hinted at in his diaries to have depressive symptoms, it would've been interesting to explore that with how he might have low self-esteem because of his half-human-ness. Also, apparently Deuce in G1/G2 was half human too? Why did they get rid of that this gen??? I don't know why they keep shifting representation around at times.

Questionable decision making aside, I actually did enjoy this movie a lot. From an objective standpoint it's a DCOM-quality movie with average writing (except Frankie bro they were funny as hell in this movie), slightly more fashionable outfits than DCOMs, and a basic self-acceptance plot. There's several movies, including one or two in G1, with similar but better-executed writing and storytelling and similar themes. But DAMMIT I can't get enough of this movie when I see it. It's a comfort movie. :'D

I could go ON about the Jackson/Holt erasure all throughout this movie, especially with the rumors it was based off an abandoned movie concept for the two back in G1, but this post is too long already and I've distracted myself from my work enough. :'D If anyone on this side of Tumblr wants to hear that ramble, I shall ramble about it another day.

Jackson stumbled through his bedroom window, barely coherent. He was shaking. The blood on his hands stood out more now that he was no longer blue. “Holt, what have you done?” Jackson’s voice trembled.

Picking up from the last update, which basically had Billy suggesting they commit crime in preface for this chapter, Jackson going for tea and biscuits, and Holt beating the shit out of a normie. I love them. But to summarise the update in two lines:

Chapter 27: “He wouldn’t go that far.” Chapter 28: “You went too far!”

Mainly Holt dealing with the aftermath of the unprovoked attack, his precarious sense-of-self, and his instinct to blame every problem in the universe on his existence.

Frankie’s got me falling apart

Frankie Stein my beloved! G3 has given me a newfound appreciation for Frankie.

As usual, this is by no means a G3 hate post or account. If you hate G3, keep it to yourself or tell someone who cares. This post is about G1 and my take on it. Don’t like it? Leave.

Anyways with that out of the way, onto some design explanation and general info about my version of Frankie!

First of all, you’ll notice right away I changed a lot of things on them. Frankie is a Frankenstein’s monster, an amalgamation of dead body parts. So I tried to make the mismatched vibe a little more obvious. Both with patches of a deeper green for the skin, and with two different eye shapes. I also made her hair texture more puffy like her mothers hair, mainly just because I thought it’d look cute. I made it mainly black instead of mainly white because I thought it looks nicer, and now it’s just white and black instead of white grey and black.

As for their outfit, it’s always bugged me that Frankie has like, hardly any red in her design? Which is wild I know, I know her main color is green, but it just feels like… not enough for an accent color. And their random purple eyeshadow is just, odd to me. So I gave them more red in the design, keeping it as an accent color while still letting the deep green shine. Frankie also has always felt like one of the most Alt to me of the main group, so I tried to incorporate more edge with the tattered sweater vest and extra fishnets, as well as piercings, because I love them. I just tried to embrace the prep punk aesthetic she had going on.

Onto headcanons, or I guess canon for my designs? (Idk)

Frankie is non-binary. I love it, non-binary Frankie is like, I can’t unsee it now. Anyways g1 is a she/they to me, or maybe a they/she. As for sexuality, I’d say probably pan, and, importantly, polyamorous. G1 Frankie always felt polyamorous to me and so I felt the need to incorporate that into this. After all, Frankie has had the most amount of love interests. If I had to ship her with someone I’d say Jackson and Holt, it’s super cute. And also because as much as I love g3 Clankie I just, don’t really see it with G1, even if it does have that interest of like, mean girl x new kid that I usually love so much.

I wanted to do my own take on their designs (mainly their outfits), so here's a look at what I would have done if I was given the wheel!

I've always wanted a short hair Frankie, so I gave them the haircut I would want if I ever decide to do a Frankie custom. It's supposed to look like their hair is standing up from electricity! Also gave them their neck bolts back. I was basically going for a blend of G1 and G3. I also added charms to their chain belt, meant to represent themselves and their friends!

For Jackson and Holt, I wanted to include the yin-yang symbolism visibly somewhere in their designs, so I put it on Jackson's belt and Holt's headphones. I gave them more piercings just because. Also, even without the big chunky platforms, Frankie is still taller than them because I said so. 💙 It's kinda hard to see, but Holt's wearing trans tape under his shirt. Because I headcanon Jackson x Frankie x Holt as being t4t.

I gave all three of them stitch motifs in their designs as something to unite them together.

I kinda realised that Mr Komos' song, True Monster Heart follows the same beat as the Monster High Fright song, but the lyrics are like the corrupted version of the original.

AHHHHHH WHEN I SAW I GOT AN ASK RELATED TO THIS I FREAKED OUT DFGHNBGVFDSF TY FOR GIVING ME SOMETHING TO RAMBLE SOME MORE ABOUT ANON FOR REAL! (Also sorry for the late response, this post has been developing in my drafts for like at least a week now dfgfhng)

I absolutely agree with the conflicting messages between the two songs! I know the song focuses on the story of this universe's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the main verses, but the main focus of the song is that message of rejection of anything and everything human.

Also, because of the Jekyll/Hyde bits, it could represent the duality of where the story starts and ends in its interpretation of a "true monster heart." Instead of Mr. Hyde's human-ness making his heart "untrue," it was his utter rejection of & research into ridding himself of his Jekyll, as well as his hiding of the truth in the first place that caused him to be found out and exiled.

His heart being "untrue" had nothing to do with the fact he was half-human, because if it were, then Clawdeen and Komos's presence in and of itself within the school would've triggered its self-destruction. That was proven as a false interpretation by the story in the movie, so it's self-explanatory. A true monster heart is one of self-acceptance, despite one's flaws or differences. That's what Mr. Hyde, and Mr. Komos thereafter, had neglected to realize before Clawdeen proved the point.

Though, I've listened to both True Monster Heart and Fright Song a few times back-to-back, to try and get where you're thinking as far as the beat, but I don't hear it unfortunately (unless you meant the tempo of the song, then yes they do follow the same 120 beats per minute!).

The closest thing I can think of as far as melodic parallels between the songs is the chanting sections. The Fright Song chant is much quicker in the way it's sung compared to the chant in True Monster Heart, however. The whole of Fright Song's chant goes in 16 beats/4 measures, whereas True Monster Heart's chant takes twice as long at 32 beats/8 measures (I was a band/choir kid lol). It's mainly due to how the song kinda drags out the point, and it definitely feels like a nod to Fright Song for sure. Fright Song's chant is only there because 4/5 of the main ghouls were fearleaders, so it was sort of characterizing the cast before actually showing their characters in the webisodes.

Fun little headcanon/ramble that I forget if I ever mentioned about Fright Song, but with Holt Hyde being released in the 1st Signature wave with the rest of the the main ghouls and all, I think it was because he's intended to be the singer of the rap section before any subsequent content with the character was released (No offense but I don't think Holt DJs because he's a good singer sdfgbfds). This would line up with his current crush in canon with Frankie, as well as his former crush on Draculaura from either the diaries or books, maybe both? I forget. :'D Also I feel like Holt wouldn't hesitate to call Cleo vile immediately after saying she's charming either, he's very direct with his words. (I also interpret Jackson/Holt as bisexual because Deuce is included in the rap I DON'T CARE Y'ALL IT MAKES SENSE!)

Also I always interpreted the howl-like sound at the end of the rap as "Holt ran outta time/battery power for his music and transforms back to Jackson as it transitions to the rest of the song." It kinda works with how the beat kinda drops down with the howl, like a TV being shut off or something idk.

Ghoulia also debuted with Signature Wave 1 but she's only in like a second of the music video in the background, I figure it could've been budgetary reasons for the animation, to save on animating an extra character. Also I imagine flame-y hair wouldn't be very fun to animate in 2D, and Deuce's snakes moving on their own were bad enough I imagine to animate, so it begrudgingly checks out as to why Holt isn't in the animated bits with everyone else.

BUT I JUST WATCHED THE MUSIC VIDEO BECAUSE I WANTED TO FOR THE SAKE OF THIS POST AND THE GUY SINGING THE RAPPING BIT HAS, YOU GUESSED IT, A BRIGHT FRICKIN NEON RED LEATHER JACKET. He doesn't have the dual-toned shirt BUT IT'S WHITE AND THIS IS CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME Y'ALL! XD

Some random MH headcanons ‘cause I’m bored, part #3.

P.S. I don’t know the canon well, so I’m sorry if any of these are accidentally canon.

Frankie has 8 points on her body with both stitches and staples: basically everywhere on her canon version plus a “Y” shaped one on the front of her torso that leads to all of her organs and such. Her torso doesn’t look any different from a human’s (accept for the staples, of course), but if she presses her hand against her ribcage and tries to feel her bones, it doesn’t feel like a human’s. There’s bumps going vertically down her down her ribcage like a wicker basket, because that’s where her parents put a lot of her wiring. Frankie has almost all of the same organs a human has, but they’re also supplemented by wiring and machinery, all which connect back to her bolts for charging. Electricity is the main thing that keeps her alive, in fact her parents had to remove her appendix before she was, well, her in order to place a battery pack in that spot. She recharges for about 8 hours every night while she sleeps, but has enough electricity at full charge to go 48 hours before she runs out of charge and dies. Her parents designed her that way in case of an emergency, but she never lets it get that bad. As a side note, Frankie sets off every single metal detector she walks through on principle just because of all the metal she has in her body. So she has a special permit that she carries in her wallet for when she has to go through them so that security doesn’t think she’s smuggling something in.

All public schools are legally required to take both human and monster students, only private schools are human only or monster only. But that’s not to say public and private schools fit these rules strictly. Some public schools end up having mainly or only human/monster students because the community which the school is located in is mainly or completely made up of humans/monsters. Some humans only private schools don’t allow part human and part monster students to enroll, while others do. Some monsters only private schools only allow a specific type of monster to enroll (like vampires only schools), some don’t specify what type of monster a student must be, some don’t allow part human and part monster students or ex-human students (like ghosts) to enroll, and some allow these students to enroll. Not all private schools are either humans only or monsters only, some accept human and monster students equally. MH specifically is a monsters only private school that allows any type of monster enroll, including students that are only part monster or that used to be human.

Before coming to MH, Holt was in a form of online homeschooling for K-8. Jackson attended three different school districts before MH: a public one for elementary school in the town neighboring MH’s school district and Heath’s hometown, another public one for most of middle school another two towns away, and the same online homeschool that Holt attended for the last quarter of 8th grade. Both had problems with making friends growing up, albeit for different reasons. Holt had issues because he was only out and about during the night, and had a reputation for being a “trouble maker”. Jackson had issues because he was extremely shy and often picked on for being a “weirdo nerd”. The fact that both were part monster and part human also contributed to this problem during elementary school, as not all parents were accepting of their kids being friends with a guy that was “basically human/monster”. It also was the primary problem in middle school, as there was plenty of tension between the human majority and monster minority, which made Jackson and Holt fear for both their safety and social acceptance if they revealed their heritage. So they basically led double lives, one with their friends as a human and monster respectively, and one with their family as who they actually were. There’s a lot more to this story, but I don’t want to overload the bullet point more than I already have.

Gooliope can technically shape shift on account of being a slime monster. Her humanoid form is pretty solid, you’d have to squeeze pretty hard to leave an indent (don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt for her) and she’s strong enough and solid enough to be able to pick all of her friends up without any difficulty. But she can relax her form, similar to when ghosts go invisible, to become a soft and squishy amorphous blob. When in this state, she can go as far as to squeeze herself under the gap of a door, although it takes some time for her to enter this way completely. If she needs to, she can just squeeze through enough to reform only her arm, then unlock the door, and enter in normally before reforming completely. She can still hear, see, and feel while in blob form, and also can technically talk and tase while in her blob form too, but she has to reform her mouth to do so. She needs to reform her nose if she wants to smell too. She can also change her body to look a certain way, like she could form horns if she wanted, albeit at the cost of some of her height since the material for them has to come from somewhere.

Content Warning: This bullet briefly talks about cults, stalking, and murder. The horror genre still exists in the MH universe, but it looks much different from ours. Monster movies are a thing of the past, and most movies that harp about the horrors of vampires/werewolves/zombies/ghosts/etc are considered racist. Horror movies, books, shows, etc are still popular though. But now they’re focused on serial killers, crazed stalkers, murderous cults, sinister secret societies, and demons (Unlike ghosts and boogeymen, demons and angels have not been scientifically proven to exist, but are widely believed in by religious and nonreligious people alike. So ghost/paranormal type media still exists, it’s just about demons and angels. Ex: The show “Ghost Adventures” still exists, but it’s called “Demon Adventures” and they hunt for Demons and the occasional Angel.)

Unlike Draculaura, who’s 1600 years old, but has been 100% present for all of those 1600 years. Cleo spent most of her 5,842 years in a sort of magical “sleeping death” state. So when she and her family were awoken around 10 years ago, they honestly had no idea what’s going on or how any of the modern world works. Cleo has finally caught up enough to go to a traditional high school, but newer tech still confuses her sometimes. She still prefers to call people rather than text, and doesn’t watch tv or use social media very frequently despite having a sizable follower count. She actually loves to read since curling up on a lounge chair during a warm sunny day reminds her of being a young girl in Egypt, and as a an Egyptian princess is very well read. It’s actually something that her and Ghoulia have in common. Often the two go to the beach in the summer and sit on lounge chairs and read novels together while sunbathing, the comforting memories of the past mixing with the pleasant joy of the present. I also like to think that Draculaura had to explain what a meme was to Cleo; I really love the thought of Draculaura and Cleo explaining modern tech to each other and helping each other work computers like two sweet and innocent old ladies.
