Why I think Fanfiction is Considered Writing

In fanfiction, there are two main things that are typically used; the characters and world/setting. Sometimes, only one is used. For example, Last One Standing is a percabeth au. Rick Riordan's characters, but my own world. Also, I have the Rebellious Seven (TRS), a PJO and Hunger Games crossover where I use Rick's characters and Suzanne's world.

Take Last One Standing (LOS) for example. I already know the basics of each character without struggle. Annabeth Chase: curly blonde hair, grey eyes, stubborn, intelligent, strategist, future architect, prideful, etc. I already know just about everything I can know about Annabeth, which makes it a lot easier to write the character.

However, I have to put this character into my own world. I have to world build, and really everything around this. I have to know how Annabeth would live in this world, based on her personality and actions in the books. It's like inputting a pre-made character into something fresh. In LOS, I have to makba world for Rick's characters to thrive in. I'm still doing something completely on my own. I still have to to 2/3 MAJOR things about a story; the plot and setting.

Now, if I do it the other way around, it's the exact opposite. I have to create my own characters, with personalities and appearances. There's so much to creating a character that fits into a world that's already been made, contrary to the previous one. The world is already built, and you can use what Rick has set up. You can use the same monsters, same base, same idea. Ypu just have to create the characters and plot. You just have a major thing done; the setting/world.

Even if you create what I call a "full out" fanfic, you're still writing. TRS is a great example of this. Whether it's the same fandom or different fandoms you're using, it doesn't matter. What matters is that you can add your own twist to things. In TRS, I may be using Panem, but that doesn't mean I can't tweak some things. I also don't have to make these certain characters get together if I don't want to. I have that control, as long as I don't steal it as my own. You are still creating things that make your fanfic different from others, even if the original format is the same. Kind of reminds me of writing prompts. The original base work isn't your own, but is something that everyone can use. Although, everyone's writing prompt is different. Some may be similar, but none are the exact same. You may have a blueprint, but you own the plot.

YOU ARE WRITING. FANFICTION TAKES JUST AS MUCH COMMITMENT AS ORIGINAL STORIES, IF NOT MORE. I SEE IT AS A PERFECT WAY FOR BEGINNERS, OR EVEN AS MATURE WRITERS. IT'S LIKE A WRITING PROMPT, SOMETHING FOR YOU TO GET STARTED ON. CAN'T ORIGINAL STORIES ORIGINATE FROM WRITING PROMPTS??? WELL, THAT'S BASICALLY FANFICTION. IT IS WRITING!!!
